The Hug Machine

By Kids X-Press Reporter Giovanni Adrovic

I would like to make a machine that gives hugs and kisses. It would also cuddle. It would love to make people feel better. I want to make it at camp, and I would leave it at camp. I will turn it on when people are happy or sad.

The Volcano

My Airplane Car

One night I was walking through the woods. When I came out of the woods I saw a big rock. When I climbed on the rock I saw a volcano. After that I found all of the ingredients to make a volcano for my family. For the lava I needed baking soda, dish soap and vinegar.

I would like to make a remote controlled car that is really fast. It would have spikes around the wheels and pointy things on top. When I press the red button it has wings that come out so it can fly into the sky and turn into an airplane. When it turns into an airplane the car goes inside.

The Kingdom Robot In the kingdom of Na’Zayah, Queen Sophia and King James have a lot of people in their land. These people need to eat. So the king and queen invented a robot that could cook for everyone. The robot has really long arms that could reach everything. It also has a big head to remember all of the recipes. Queen Sophia loves cake and King James loves chicken and rice with broccoli. The robot made their favorite meals.

Someday I would like to make my own video game. My video game would take place in outer space. You would play as a knight and fight aliens to save the Earth. The mission of our heroes is to kill the aliens, trying to take over the planet. The knights would wear capes, helmets and boots. The opening scene of my video game would be in space, where you would fight the aliens. The two main knights are going to be called The Dark Knight Davyen and The Dark Knight Jayden. The aliens are going to be called “Big Heads”. These aliens are green with big heads, small bodies, black eyes and no noses. The main space ship is big and painted green and white with a point on top of the windows. The planets that you will battle are Mars, Pluto and Saturn. In the game, the heroes are given weapons to defeat the aliens.

Everything Girls Talk Ab0ut By Kids X-Press Reporter Jada Fripp

How about a game night? You can play Scrabble and eat lots of popcorn!

First, we are going to go camping. Next, we will go to the mall and buy dresses. Then, we will order Chinese food to eat. After that we will play dress up and rock my mom’s high heels. Finally, we will listen to my favorite Katy Perry song, “Roar” and dance to it. We will also pretend we are on a runway modeling clothes.

Hi! I am going to tell you what girls like. First, girls like to gossip about boys. Second, we like to compliment Kids X-Press and say our favorite color. Third, girls like to scream their heads off, until they turn red. They just love having sleepovers. I mean, like for real, all they say is, “Do you want to have a sleepover at my house?” I already have everything ready to have a sleepover.

This story is a fictional story. This story talks about exercising and it also talks about different sizes. There were two kids. One was a girl and one was a boy. Their names are Nala and Mogli. Nala is small and skinny. Mogli is fat and big. Nala and Mogli are both twins, and they both have blue eyes. Mogli wants to be skinny so he feels disappointed.

4

He feels disappointed because he was fat. Mogli felt like an outside person so he decided to make a change in his life. I will feel upset and kind of disappointed and mad because they were talking about Mogli’s look. I feel like this story gets 2 thumbs up!

Gymcats By Kids X-Press Reporter Joemmy Mora

Gymnastics is my favorite sport. It’s kind of dangerous, but I don’t want that to stop you from trying it. Personally, I don’t want to brag, but I’m kind of an expert. Some people say it’s dangerous, but it’s really not. I think my favorite part of the activity, the trampoline, is the least dangerous. The most dangerous activity is the balance beam. I actually got hurt once on the bars, but not too bad! I had to quit because I’m going on vacation to the Dominican Republic. Maybe you can try and take my place. The first time I tried gymnastics I was horrible, but then I got better. It’s really fun. Have fun trying it!

The Talking Cats By Kids X-Press Reporter Giselle Chacon

Part 1: The Beginning One day, a scientist was working in his lab. His three kittens, Jewel, Joyana, and Madeline were playing around in his lab and accidentally knocked down a talking potion. “I can talk!” said Jewel. “Me too!” Joyana added, “Me three!” Madeline exclaimed. Soon the scientist heard the cats talking. He wondered which potion did the cats get into?

Part 2: Super Heroes When the scientist heard the cats talking, he checked every talking potion that he had made. Finally, he found the empty bottle of talking potion. By this time, the cats already drank another potion that gave them special abilities. Joyana got the power of happiness, Jewel got the power to be pretty, and Madeline got the power of being mad, which gave her a madness blade to fight against her enemies. Now they fight crime to save the day. Go talking cats!

Interviewing NY Knicks All-Star Allan Houston KXP On-Call Reporter Dion-Dre White D: What was it like growing up in Kentucky? A: My family was very close and my parents were very hard working. I have two younger sisters and a lot of our life was based around basketball. My father was the coach at the University of Louisville. My mother worked extremely hard as a financial aid director at the University of Louisville. Both of my parents were teachers and stressed the importance of having a good education. Our life was built around sports, education, and faith. D: Who was your biggest inspiration growing up? A: My parents and being a father of 7 and a husband, I see what it took and takes to be a good parent. Also some basketball players my father coached inspired me. They set the bar high for me not only to be a professional athlete but to work hard. When you see greatness up close it inspires you. Muhammad Ali grew up down the street from my mother. Seeing pictures of him and me as a baby, I don’t remember too much, but our families were connected. This was the most famous athlete in the world and my father felt proud to watch him fight on TV and to be able to call him a friend. It was inspirational. D: Share an experience from your childhood that led you to want to become a professional basketball player. A: Being around my father at a young age, I used to pretend like I had my own uniform when I was five or six years old. I snuck into my father’s stuff and stole one of his uniforms and put it in my bag, so I could have my own game bag. D: Do you have a creative outlet that you enjoy such as drawing or playing an instrument? A: Believe it or not, I like making little videos, editing and producing videos. I have a lot of family videos that I’ve made of me and my kids and just stuff that I do. Maybe one day I will have a production company, because I really like the process of involving my kids. My two daughters Jade and Jodi have this little show that I film called, “The Jade and Jodi Show”. They are nine and eight years old and we edit the videos together and try to make it fun.

8

Allan Houston and Dion-Dre White sharing and making memories D: How does it feel to raise seven children? A: It’s like Christmas everyday! Everyday I go home, nothing else matters because I am blessed to have time and a relationship with them. I influence them and my actions and words really matter. I learn more from them than I think they learn from me. As a father and a leader in general you have to help people out of their comfort zones, helping them be the best they can be. It’s all about unconditional love. D: What made you decide to do what you do when you retired from pro basketball? A: When I realized I couldn’t play anymore, I traveled with the NBA as an ambassador, I analyzed the game, and I did some television work. I tried to come back again and play basketball, but Donnie Walsh, President of the NY Knicks sat me in his office and shared his thoughts. He thought I’d be good on the management side and suggested that I think about it. He helped me grow and he helped me with scouting the D-League. I didn’t choose it, it kind of chose me. D: What was one of your biggest challenges? A: I would have to say transitioning from amateur to professional, because it’s so new. You have to be responsible and you have to learn to navigate who you’re around. You have to be professional while you’re trying to learn and have fun. You realize it’s the real deal, it’s not just a game anymore, and you’re being paid to do a job. The key is to listen and be receptive. When you talk a lot and think you know it all you’re in trouble; the key is to listen.

D: Have you faced tough times? A: I think everybody faces dark times, but when you have faith it doesn’t remove pain or the dark times; it gets you through, it’s the light that helps you navigate through those dark times. When I was a junior in high school I was taking medicine because I was growing fast and literally the medicine ate a hole in my stomach. The last day of the conditioning program I just passed out. I don’t remember anything else but receiving a pint of blood. I still see my uncle that gave me the pint of blood and it makes me realize how precious life is. D: What kind of relationship did you have with your teammates before you retired from the Knicks? A: I was the type that tried to lead by example and do the right thing. For 8 months it’s you and the team so it’s good to form a good connection. You realize you’re brothers. I admire the players and guys that invest time into getting to know each other because when you’re on the court; it’s war, and you’re going to war with someone you would want to know and trust. D: Who is your favorite music artist/group/ genre? A: I would say old school hip-hop. When I was in college I listened to, A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and Outkast. Being in Louisville, I listened to east coast hip-hop then when I moved further south, I got into southern hip hop. And, when I moved to New York, I met this west coast hip hop group that happened to be involved in gangs but God saved them and now they’re a Christian or inspirational hip hop group. D: Please tell us about FISLL. A: FISLL came from my father and I. We felt led to share our experiences. We thought about the fundamentals that apply everywhere, not just on the basketball court. It’s about things that can help you have a winning mindset. We talked about “Faith” and “Integrity.” When it comes to integrity, I think of my father. He was always mindful of saying and doing the right thing. I think “Sacrifice”is human nature for us. It’s about how we help the next person be their best selves and make the community better. The two L’s stand for “Leadership” and “Legacy.”

Leadership is bringing people together for a common goal and keeping the inspiration to continue to reach the goal. Legacy is the impact you have on the world. You can impact someone in an instant. We want it to become second nature for people, we want them to practice Faith, Integrity, Sacrifice, Leadership and Legacy: FISLL. D: What do you like better, being a professional athlete or a family man? A: I think being a professional athlete is an instant gratification, you make a shot; everybody cheers, you miss; everybody boos, but that’s only for that moment. Family is forever, it doesn’t end. My children will have children and my legacy will go on. Like FISLL, you want those fundamentals of life, you want those to live on through your children, the people that you impact. I prefer both! D: What are your thoughts on education? A: Well, education was core in both my family and my wife’s family. Education expands your imagination. It provides a platform for whatever you want to do. Education is not only about reading and writing, it’s about communicating, problem solving and serving others. D: How do you feel about Kids X-Press and what we do? A: It’s amazing! Just sitting here being interviewed by you is something every student should experience. Now, not only do you have experience to talk while being filmed on camera, but you now have a voice! It’s allowing you to challenge your imagination!

KXP On-Call

R: Créalo o no, me gusta hacer videos cortos, editar y producirlos. The Jade and Jodi Show”. Ellas tienen nueve y ocho años y editamos los videos juntos e intentamos hacerlo divertidos.

10

P: ¿Has enfrentado tiempos difíciles?

An Unbelievable Adventure! By Kids X-Press Reporter Maxwell Ma The plane trip was 8 hours long from John F. Kennedy Airport to the Zurich Airport in Switzerland. We took off at 6:30 pm. Switzerland is 6 hours ahead of New York. It was about 8:30 am when we arrived at the Zurich Airport. We started our tour of Switzerland by visiting the Swiss National Museum. It has exhibits from prehistoric to present day. There are models of the wars in Switzerland. However Switzerland hasn’t been in a war for 169 years, since it’s civil war in 1847. We saw lots of weapons that the Swiss used in its wars. They had a really long spearlike weapon called the pike and it was at least 10 to 25 feet long and weighed at least 5.5 to 13.2 pounds. They were used mainly in warfare in the 1700s. The next day we took a train to Luzern. The trains in Switzerland are much quieter than the ones in New York. Once we got to Luzern we went to a bridge decorated with flowers; called the Chapel Bridge. The Chapel Bridge has old paintings, some which date back to the 1600s. Unfortunately all of them were almost burnt in a fire in 1993. Then we visited a wall named the Musegg wall built in 1386 and it was almost fully intact. We climbed the watchtowers and had a fantastic view of the city of Luzern. Then we went to a lion monument, which was built for the Swiss soldiers who died in the French Revolution. It has a lion with an arrow in its body and 2 shields around it carved into a rock. After we went to the Lion Monument we took a cogwheel train to the Rigi Mountain (or Rigi Kulm) that is 1798 meters high. It was cloudy so we couldn’t get a good view of Luzern but on the way up we could see beautiful lakes and rivers. The next day we went to Jungfraujoch top of Europe that is 11,388 feet tall. The train ride was about 2 hours from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch. Once we got to the top we saw high mountains covered with snow and glaciers. There were little tracks where you could go tubing, sledding, skiing, and zip lining. Then we visited a tunnel that showed the history of the railway to Jungfraujoch. It took over 16 years to build the railroad to Jungfraujoch.

Also, there was an ice palace made completely of ice and it was very slippery. Then we went to a Lindt Chocolate shop, where there was a ton of chocolate. The day after that we went to Geneva. We saw a really high fountain called the d’Eau. In the back it had a jet of water shooting from a little island and on the other side of it, it was falling down. The d’Eau shoots 500 liters of water per second to the height of 140 meters in the air. Then we got some delicious ice cream from the famous Swiss company Movenpick. After that we visited the St. Pierre Cathedral and an archeological underground site that had the history and some exhibitions in the building of the cathedral. We went up in a tower and saw the fountain and cathedral from high up. Then the next day we went to tour Bern; the capital of Switzerland. I saw a big church and went on a round trip on a boat. We also went on a tour and saw water dance at certain times. The water that comes out the holes goes all at the same time. Then we visited the Albert Einstein’s Museum, because he once lived in Bern and we also got to see his house. Switzerland is a small country. The size of it is only 15,940 mi2 that is about the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined and California is about 10 times bigger than Switzerland! However Switzerland is a beautiful country that has magnificent mountains and lakes and a long history.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW YOUNG AUTHOR By Kids X-Press Reporter Tyra Renee Chisley In my opinion, when some adults imagine millennial writers, they would think they’d write things along the lines of “The Three Little Piggies” or “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, something simple and not very time consuming. They think we’d write a couple of sentences per page, then draw a little picture on the side, then be done with it. They'd think it probably wouldn't be possible for young children to possibly write a book that could actually have meaning or actually be something you'd want to be motivated to read. Then there comes me. I'm only a child, practically a baby. I'm 11 years old, but many of the people who know me (and have read my books) say I am an old soul, and know a lot more than an average 11 year old should. If you can't already tell, I'm a writer, and have been writing since I started learning how to make sentences. Now, of course, we all start at the bottom. I once wrote something along the lines of “The Three Little Piggies” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, but I always had my own creative ideas behind it. I was only 5 years old when I started writing, and I still remember like it was yesterday, the day I picked up my colored construction paper and crayons and told my mom I was going to make a book. I would base it off of real life events that I've gone through. For example, I had a passion for ballet at the time, and the number of ballet books I have that I wrote as a little girl are too much for me to count. What about today? I am often inspired by books I read, and write something similar, but in my own way. Or, I'd take real historical events and try to write a story that could take place during those times. Writing has always been my go-to activity when my mood was negative. However, I do have other hobbies that I probably couldn't live without today,

16

such as piano and gymnastics. I am still a kid, and have school, but I always seem to find time for my hobbies. I've been playing piano for 4 years (since March of 2012) and gymnastics since the age of 4. Tyra Renee Being a writer has in a way helped me to become who I am today. I've learned many things when I wrote in my books, and writing to me is like an adventure in words. While writing, I can see different perspectives of characters who could have totally different personalities, and to me, writing in different characters views is like switching bodies for a day. Writing is way much more than just jotting down a few words per page and being done with it, it's like being in a whole new world in a whole new life, an escape from reality for a little while. I hope one day to grow as a successful woman with a successful career. Of course, I'll try to have time to write, but I dream of being an international lawyer too. I want to graduate from Harvard, and like any other average person, get married and have a family. But I'll forever know that I am no ordinary person, but indeed an extraordinary person, and I will always continue to do good in school, be obedient, and of course, continue to write. It makes me so grateful that I have found my passion so early in life, and a passion so big that I will most likely never let go of it. My name is Tyra Renee Chisley, and my dream is to be the best writer I can be. Check out Tyra’s first book, “Marco Polo”, uploaded on our website under Aspiring Young Authors.

One way I will change the world is ending world hunger. I want to make this change because many children are dying. I will make this change by saving up my money and sending all types of food to other countries. I will also gather food that has been wasted from restaurants and package it for hungry kids.

I’m done with all these bad things in the world. It’s time to change it! These are the ideas that will blow your mind.

Another way I would change the world is by making people recycle. I want to recycle because it is a great way to get rid our earth of waste. I would help people recycle by reminding them every morning. I will also invent a timer that reminds people to recycle. I also would like to change the world by having some of the many people I know including myself, volunteer at the soup kitchen with the homeless for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I want to volunteer because I love helping people. I would ask my grandma to cook a lot of food and we will bring it to a homeless shelter and have dinner. Although I would have to persuade them a lot, I know I can do it. Finally, I would change the world by helping people to stop smoking. I want to change this because smoking is a bad habit that can cause death. I’d stop people from smoking by telling them and showing them what smoking does like causes cancer and gum disease. I also want to stop it because it is bad for the environment. This is how Sienna will change the world.

First, I will make orphanages where orphans can stay. I want to do this because orphans can get treated to a wonderful place to live. They could also get adopted. Then I will end smoking. I will do this because smoking can cause lung cancer and death. Nobody wants to die! I want to live in a smoke free zone. After that, I will have a clean earth by recycling because God created a clean world and I want to keep it that way. The cleaner the earth, the more animals and flowers will appear. Finally, I’m going to give money to the poor because the key things in life that everyone needs are food, shelter, clothing, and a loving family. Wow, these are a lot of changes I would make to the world. What would you change?

I would like to help you change the world too!

INSPIRING

POETRY

In response to the Civil Rights unit the the students of Great Falls Academy took the time to write poetry reflecting on the “Ballad of Birmingham”.

BLANK VERSE By Margarita Ortiz, Great Falls Academy

Brother, we must talk Stay home and feast Momma made collard greens and mac and cheese! No, Sister, I cannot talk I must make money, to never have to starve But Brother, its dangerous, Pigs are no longer just bacon The beef is for cow-ards. Anyway, Brother, stay Home and feast Sister, I am not alone

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DENISE*

EQUAL By Jovan Hill, Great Falls Academy

If tears were an ocean I’d give you a Tsunami Because of the color of my skin I get pushed around Looking for a change Thinking of a way to make it equal Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream Malcolm had a plan Put it together

By C’Mijah Grayson, Great Fallls Academy

And let’s get a change

Black, White, Orange, Pink It shouldn’t matter what people think

March, March, March We’re making our way to change

My color used to matter but now It’s just a color

A lot of us together

Staying up all night making sure My brother makes it home, life was hard Being black, but now we all stick Together as a pact

Together we build a bond that they can’t take

We stand together and stick as one, Tired of running, tired of fighting; I swear I’m done

That’s all we need

My color used to matter but now It’s just a color

It’s called love Equal, Equal, Equal That’s all we want Just give it to us And we’ll kindly leave

My mother always taught me “Never judge a book by it’s cover!” *This poem was written on November 17, 2016. Denise McNair was born November 17, 1951 and died September 15, 1963 at the age of 11 (with 3 other girls) when a bomb exploded at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL in a Civil Rights incident known as the Birmingham Bombing.

The Couple Competition

If I could have my own TV show, it would be a competitive game show. The characters’ names would be Lucinda, Gareth, Jack and Sadie. The winner of the game would get $7,000,000,000. Lucinda is with Gareth and she is a very popular girl back home. Gareth is a very strong boy and he would do anything for Lucinda. Sadie is a very mean girl and she is with Jack. Jack is a very shy guy and was forced to be on the show. In the show they will be asked questions about each other. Since this is my show, I say that Lucinda and Gareth win.

Do you want to know what I would do if someone gave me an infinite amount of money? First, I would go to Mexico and build a house with lots of rich things, like gold bricks, diamond walls, and indestructible steel. Next, I would buy a horse and ride it back to the house that I built. Then I would buy dogs and puppies. After that, I would open my own shop and sell candy and tamales. I would also go to see games in Mexico. Finally, I would live there with my family so we could do so much more. There’s so much more to tell you, but I’m running out of time. See you next time. magnetic manipulation, invisibility, and the ability to throw fire and ice from his hands. In the future, BIO PO will make robots to help people. One kind of robot is a cleaning robot, so people wouldn’t have to clean again. Another robot would be a fighting robot. If there were a robbery, the robot could fight the thieves. SCIENCE

The Digestive System By Kids X-Press Reporter Sacha Suliman My name is Sacha Suliman, and I am here Mouth to educate young scientists like you, about how the digestive system is important for Liver your body to function properly. The digestive system breaks down food through a series of steps in the body, Gallbladder which gives us nutrients and energy we need to perform everyday activities like Small walking, running, or climbing stairs. intestine Because The digestive system helps us do this, we are able to maintain homeostasis, Anus or a stable environment inside our body would be internally balanced. The digestive system might not be a short or easy process, but it is an interesting one! There are two types of digestion in the digestive system. These are known as Mechanical Digestion and Chemical Digestion. Each type of digestion completes different jobs that help overall with the process of digesting food. For example, Mechanical digestion is the method of breaking food into smaller pieces so that it could become easily processed in the digestive tract. Whereas, Chemical Digestion uses enzymes and acids to break down food through chemical reactions. Enzymes are proteins that speed up and the rate of chemical reactions. Acids are substances that help to breakdown food. Some are strong enough to break down metal! In the digestive system, several organs work together to carry out the overall job of breaking down food. You may think that the stomach is the first step in this system, but actually your mouth is. For example, when you eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you are using your mouth to chew and break it down into smaller pieces. This is an example of mechanical digestion. As the sandwich is chewed in the mouth, enzymes are released from within your saliva to further break down the food chemically. This is an example of chemical digestion. After you have chewed the food to your satisfaction, you then decided to swallow. As you swallow, a tiny flap in the pharynx called the epiglottis directs the sandwich towards the entrance of the esophagus, which is a tube that leads to the stomach. In the esophagus, a process known as peristalsis helps to push the swallowed sandwich through the esophagus. Peristalsis is a muscular contraction that squeezes the sandwich down to the stomach. When you think peristalsis,

22

think of when you squeeze the toothpaste to get it out. You are forcing the toothStomach paste to go to the top, the same way peristalsis is forcing the sandwich to move down. When the sandwich enters the stomach it is mixed with all the enzymes Pancreas (that work well in acidic environments ex. Pepsin) and acids that break it down, and makes it into a paste called Chyme. Large intestine Because this reaction uses enzymes and acids, it is an example of chemical Rectum digestion. At the same time, the stomach is squeezing the food. What is this called again? If you said peristalsis, then you would be right! This is also an example of mechanical Digestion. When the chyme is finished processing in the stomach, it is then subjected to the small intestine. However, since the small the pancreas, which is an organ that cancels the activity of the chyme while adding more enzymes. Esophagus

After the chyme is neutralized in the pancreas, it can then be sent to the small intestine where it is then broken down chemically by the other enzymes. The macromolecules (large molecules) in the chyme are broken down into their individual monomers (tiny molecules), which are then small enough to enter the bloodstream. The bloodstream is part of the circulatory system, which is the circulation of blood and nutrients throughout the body. The bloodstream takes in or absorbs all the nutrients are diffused in the cells of the bloodstream. These cells use all the necessary materials that are given to them in order to make new materials that are given to them in order to make new materials or in other term, synthesize the nutrients. This process is often referred to as are then sent to the large intestine. The large intestine, removes the extra water in the remaining chyme, and releases it out of the body as solid waste (feces or what you know as‌ poop). The digestive system is very important and we need it in order to maintain homeostasis because it helps us to break down the foods that we eat into nutrients that we can use as energy for our everyday activities. The digestive System also helps us get rid of the waste that we don’t need and release it from our bodies. Maintaining homeostasis is critical for every living organism, and the digestive system helps the human beings to live and maintain homeostasis.

The Path to College/Success

By Kids X-Press Reporter Maria Gutierrez

By Kids X-Press Reporter Gabriel Osei

It was Christmas morning, and I was so happy about it. When I woke up, I couldn’t believe that Christmas was here. I went directly to the kitchen and grabbed a mug of hot chocolate. My sister and my brother were getting ready because we were going to visit my family. I realized that I would have to start getting ready too. When all of us were ready, we got into my dad’s car. On the way to my family’s house I was thinking about how my Christmas day was going to be. When we got there, my family was so happy because they hadn’t seen us in a long time.

College is one of the most important times of your life. You don’t wake up one day and say you’re going to college. It takes hard work and dedication. You can still go to college and have bad grades, however, they wouldn’t be as good or of quality. Those grades also wouldn’t allow you additional features or opportunities such as studying abroad, internships, etc. Getting involved in scholarships, college fairs, and college programs can also help you in deciding what college you want to go to and get help in paying for it. Deciding where you want to go is very important. This is because you are paying for where you are going, so you would want to go somewhere you would feel at home. Colleges don’t just look at grades, they also look at extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, jobs and volunteer work. If you work to your full potential, there is nothing to worry about. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. All play and no work makes Jack a lazy boy.”The Shining.

The first thing that I did was play with my family’s pet. Her name is Selena and she is a beautiful cat. After that, my family and I started eating. My aunt made a delicious dinner. Next, when we were done with the food, we exchanged presents. We were all so happy, but sadly we had to go. Me and my family said goodbye to our family. Then we got into my dad’s car and went back to our house. The day was gone and I had so much fun. I was so happy and thankful for this day that I couldn’t wait for next year.

The Bunk

By Kids X-Press Reporter Yaw Gyimah Let’s face it, school lunches aren’t what kids look forward to eating during their day. As I got older kids started to refer to school lunches as “bunk”. Eventually, kids started to make jokes to each other as they ate it. I remember times in middle school, when I would get on line for lunch and had no idea of what the food on my tray was. I’d poke it, smell it, and immediately throw it away. Kids started all kinds of rumors about the “bunk”. Some would say that if you ate it, it would take years to digest. Schools would take the bottom half of what seemed to be the unused bagels, pour sauce and cheese on it and pass it off as pizza. We always suspected that the chicken nuggets weren’t made from actual chickens. I spend most of my lunch periods socializing instead of eating.

I want to be an Architect - Design and Visualization Students from Instituto Juan Luis Vives, Villa Gesell, Buenos Aires, Argentina Under the supervision of Mรณnica Travaglini, architectural advisor, students from Juan Luis Vives Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina were challenged with developing a 3D visualization of a futuristic complex to be erected on a beach town in Villa Gesell. Students worked in teams to create these actual scaled models beginning with drawings to renderings and finally to these large scale models. They were asked to consider not just a esthetics, but also the environmental impact and financial costs. Students were exposed to many opportunities to resolve complex social issues while gaining experiential learning in an extremely hands-on format. We applaud them for doing such a wonderful job!

INTRODUCING OUR NEW YOUNG AUTHOR

By Kids X-Press Reporter Jaleah Roman

“A picture is worth 1,000 words.” Well, to that I say, 1,000 words is worth 2,000 pictures. You see, people often overlook the power of details. The major effect it can have on one’s imagination, it’s amazing. The movie that could play in your head with the words said on paper is something that does not beat one’s picture, it actually helps it. This is not me hating on talent I do not have, this is me explaining the importance and beautiful thing we call imagination. When I was young, I’m afraid to admit, I was a lonely kid, always stuck in my room, no friends to hang out with and nothing to do. It was just me, a computer and a drive to be something more than what I was. I was 11 when I stumbled over the effects of writing, and when I was 12, I started writing my own material. Through those rather lonesome years in my life, I created an empire in my head filled with adventure, love and expectations. No, I won’t say happiness. Sometimes to be engrossed with something or someone you have to relate to it, and that did not always mean joy. It meant sadness, it meant feeling hurt, it meant pain, and it meant happiness. Soon, I became something that’s called a maladaptive daydreamer, that’s someone who thinks too much. Yes, it did sometimes get in the way of my studies and my sleep schedule; but I’ve never been less lonely.

I would spend hours reading and more thinking. Continuing the story, making rewrites on how I would tell it or just plain out making my own stories. I spent the year doing this before I finally had the courage to actually write about them, my characters. They would go on little adventures that I would not get to go on. I fell so in love with these characters that I forgot whit felt like to be myself. The protagonists always tried their best and the antagonist had a reason. And now, at 13, I have a shot, the confidence and the imagination to not only to put my work on paper, but get it out there to people. And I couldn’t have done this if it weren’t for little details that twisted and turned the gears in my head to create a projector of millions of stories. I will admit at first I was stumped, I didn’t know what to say, to write. Maybe I should write a story with meaning, a poem filled with hope, or a letter of encouragement to make people think. The realism of society makes people forgot what it feels like to believe. Everyone deserves a chance to come up with their own stories, whether it is their autobiography or the tale of love and loss, it’d be theirs. So anyone, ten or twenty, pick up a pencil and whether it’s writing or drawing, make something! Make it your story. Check out more of this young author's work at our website in the Aspiring Author's Gallery.
