best places to work in kentucky. The diagram for success. Does your team have what it takes? Kentucky continues to be a great place to live and work due in part to two of our most valuable resources — a quality workforce and world-class businesses. But there is always room for improvement, and we believe strengthening these assets will ensure the Commonwealth’s leadership in the future economy. Program… was conceived in 2004 to celebrate Kentucky’s elite employers who have successfully created work environments that staff enjoy and thrive in. goal… to raise the bar among employers, creating excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace, thereby attracting talented people for years to come. eligibility… open to all publicly or privately held organizations, either for-profit or notfor-profit. Companies must have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky to be eligible. survey process… managed by Best Companies Group (BCG), an independent workplace excellence research firm. They manage the registration process, conduct the two-part survey process, evaluate the data and ultimately select the organizations that meet the Best Place to Work criteria. Register by October 26, 2012 to take part in the 2013 assessment process.

2

Part 1: Employee Survey… (three-quarters of each company’s score) involves a confidential 76-question employee survey which is used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experience and company culture. Part 2: Employer Survey… (one-quarter of each company’s score) consists of an employer questionnaire used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information. Part 3: In-depth Analysis… combined employee/ employer data allows the experts at BCG to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company. Part 4: Making the List… BCG’s experts determine which organizations meet the criteria necessary to make the list, and these employers are then compared to one another and ranked within their prospective company-size categories (small-medium or large).

We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of 65 companies who have set the standard for creating positive working environments. As president of the Kentucky Chamber, I am pleased so many Kentucky employers hold such a strong commitment to their employees. I am especially pleased that 43 of 65 companies to be named a Best Place to Work this year are members of the Kentucky Chamber. From banks to colleges, to health care facilities, this year’s list of winners encompasses a broad spectrum of services. In order to make Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able not only to educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we also must entice those from out-of-state to work here. The Best Places program provides your company with a tool to measure workplace satisfaction each year. These results will help you create positive measures that will, in the long run, help advance Kentucky. We applaud you for your commitment to your employees and to the Commonwealth. Congratulations! Understanding the Benefits of Making the List In 2011, Professor Brian Dineen of the University of Kentucky and Professor Jason Shaw of the University of Minnesota received a $96,000 grant from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Foundation to study Best Places to Work: How “Making the List” Impacts the Strength and Sustainability of Subsequent Recruitment and Turnover Outcomes. The study analyzes how participating in a program like Best Places to Work in Kentucky impacts organizational outcomes, including turnover and applicant pool quality.

When finished, the study will examine 16 state, city or industry-based programs from the United States and Canada, representing thousands of companies and hundreds of thousands of employees. To date, the study has examined data from 2009-2011 competitions for the following states: Kentucky, Maine, Florida, Texas and Hawaii. So far, the study has shown that participating in the program and being ranked results in a significant decrease in turnover across companies. According to Professor Dineen, preliminary research has also shown the following. First, it appears there are differences in turnover rates between older and younger workers following a Best Places ranking. Specifically, Dineen finds that while older worker turnover tends to decrease, younger worker turnover actually exhibits a slight increase. While this result is still preliminary, it could be that younger workers seek development opportunities and that their experiences with Best Places to Work companies fill this need. This further suggests “hidden value” in being named a Best Place to Work: the ability to promise younger workers such an opportunity, and thus the ability to recruit younger workers even though there is no guarantee those workers will remain with the company forever. Second, the research also indicates that while an overall decrease in turnover occurs across companies, smaller companies may actually benefit the most. It could be that smaller companies benefit from a camaraderie effect: employees of such companies feel more a part of the “victory” and thus want to remain on the “winning team.” Also, larger companies may already be on the radar for most in the community, meaning the recognition may not have as much impact on larger company employees. Finally, it appears that there is a greater decrease in turnover in good employees than among lesser-rated employees, following a Best Places to Work ranking. Dineen’s research is ongoing and will analyze data related to the quality of applicant pools enjoyed by ranked companies, as well as certain financial outcomes. Stay tuned for more.

These projects target cancer, metabolic disorders, immune system conditions, infectious diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. We remain staunch believers that our success is inextricably linked to our groundbreaking science, our commitment to always acting in the best interests of the patients, and our ongoing dedication to create a stimulating, fun and inspiring workplace in which our people are both challenged and supported as they build their careers. Our mission continues to be to leverage our excellent science to make our medicines available to more patients around the world.

Succeeding in the work we do requires exceptional people. We bring together the most talented employees we can find, and then we provide them with the opportunity to be themselves. Engagement/Satisfaction

MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group Tenmast Software Company

FROM AN EXPERT:

FROM A WINNER:

Employee Engagement is on the mind of nearly every Human Resources Director these days. It is a very hot topic right now, and for good reason! But what exactly does the term employee engagement mean, and how does it differ from job satisfaction?

Employee engagement starts with the relationship the employee and employer have established. All employees we hire are professional people who will spend half of their conscious day working on our goals. Engaging them to make their best contribution to those goals starts with sharing information about the company. On the one hand, sharing information demonstrates that we respect the employee enough that we think they need to know as much about the company and its financial prospects as management. On the other hand, if we trust employees to contribute their best to the success of the company, they need to understand how a company runs, what is important to its success and what the employee can do to further those goals.

Most people accurately describe job satisfaction as an employee’s overall evaluation of his/her job. Employee engagement, however, is “a heightened emotional and intellectual connection that an employee has for his/her organization that causes that employee to exert additional discretionary effort to his/her work.”1 So an employee satisfied with her job might say, “I really like my job,” but an engaged employee would say, “I really like my job, and I go above and beyond the call of duty for my company because I’m so committed to it.” So employee engagement is job satisfaction taken to the next level. An abundance of research has consistently found that high levels of employee engagement lead to a wide array of positive business outcomes including higher profits, higher productivity, better product quality, greater customer loyalty, reduced safety accidents, reduced absenteeism, and reduced employee turnover. Unfortunately, research by Gallup suggests that 54% of the workforce is not engaged, and 18% is actively disengaged. Those actively disengaged American workers miss 118.3 million more work days and use 7 times as much health care than engaged employees! Thus, assessing employee engagement levels with employee surveys and taking proactive steps to improve employee engagement are critical to business success! Meredith Wells-Lepley, Ph.D. Research Associate Institute for Workplace Innovation (iwin) University of Kentucky | www.iwin.uky.edu 1

All employees participate in financial literacy training in the first 90 days of employment and on an ongoing basis through bi-weekly and monthly huddles. We teach all employees how the business operates and what is important to ensure its continuing success. We establish business goals with the participation of all employees and share detailed information with all employees about our progress, including financial information like bi-weekly forecasting and a monthly P&L. We set goals with employees for financial performance and pay bonuses based on achieving those goals. Employee teams also build short term games around our goals, including a set of rewards that everyone agrees upon. The games typically earn points which are displayed on scoreboards and ‘winning’ the games lead to the rewards. Some of those games are also incorporated into the bonus plans. This year we will further employee engagement by starting an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), in addition to the current 401(k) plan. We are implementing the ESOP to create true employee ownership and reward employees for their ongoing contribution to the success of the company. We believe that working for a company in which you have an ownership stake will take employee engagement to a new level. James Mauch | CEO | Tenmast Software Company | www.tenmast.com

FroM an eXpert: Many companies overlook salary and benefits because they are not considered the most important aspect of a job. It is crucial to recognize that the salary and benefits your organization offer serve a major role in recruiting, retaining and motivating staff. Providing the right amount of employee benefits is one of the secrets to keeping employees on the job even when there are higher-paying job opportunities. Alternatively, employees who are paid very well leave jobs because the benefits are limited or perceived as not competitive. Desirable benefits include: health care, eye care, dental care, sick leave, retirement plans as well as vacation time and flexibility in one’s schedule. As times change and newer generations join the workforce, benefits are being looked at more carefully. Surveying employees frequently concerning needs and wants for benefits can help an employer allocate resources equitably and more affordably. Similar to employee benefits, the quest to compensate employees fairly is an ongoing challenge. If your organization pays employees too little, you may risk alienating and losing valuable employees. If you pay too much, you may be unwisely spending company resources. How much an organization can afford for employee salaries can play a significant role in the caliber of talent you attract to your organization. Remember, the key is balance when evaluating pay and benefits in an organization. Both play a very important role in successfully selecting and retaining staff, and serve to define your organization’s culture and image in a community. Amy N. Perhaps the most difficult part of building a great place to work is ensuring that every employee can see the big picture — what’s important to the company and the vision of where they’re going long term — while continuing the hard work needed every day. In places that are truly the best places to work, senior management has figured out how to communicate the vision and how to involve employees in accomplishing the mission.

At Genentech, we challenge our Management, LLC employees to create the kind of company where we set high goals, strive mightily to achieve them, and build a culture where people are respected as individuals. We believe that everyone can demonstrate leadership, but when people step into formal leadership roles, the expectations for leadership change.

There is a story told about the Apollo space mission that illustrates an organization where this worked. President Lyndon Johnson was touring NASA and asked a guy sweeping what his job was. He answered “I’m helping to put a man on the moon.” That’s a guy who understands his part in the mission. Best company leaders are usually good communicators who regularly talk with their employees about the organization’s objectives and many also ask their employees for suggestions and input on how to accomplish these objectives. The best leaders ask, “how are we doing,” and have the courage to listen with an open mind. Not easy to do, but with big dividends for the organization and its individual employees. One of the most effective ways I’ve heard to achieve Best Places status is to involve your employees in the year-long project of making the list. The energy and enthusiasm associated with working on a positive, shared goal — whether you make the list or not — has big payoffs in employee morale. It’s the kind of effort your employees will tell their friends and families about and that will make them proud to say they work for your company. That pride translates into a good job well done every day. Susan L. Harmansky, SPHR Vice President Human Resources Southern Graphic Systems, International www.sgsintl.com

If you think that the number one reason people leave an organization is because of money, you are wrong. Research tells us that the supervisor is really the key to employee engagement, loyalty, and commitment. No organizational policy or procedure, benefit, or other perk can make up for the impact of a poor supervisor, and conversely, a good supervisor working effectively with his/ her people can overcome many negative hurdles. It’s not surprising that nine of the 76 questions asked of employees in the Best Places survey relate to how employees view their relationship with their manager. For example, the survey asks employees to respond to these statements about their manager:

We realize how important the personal lives of our employees are and that great employers offer their people more than just a job, but an opportunity for work-life integration and balance. Leadership at Booz Allen provides employees with the flexibility to focus on what’s most important to meet their goals, both at home and in the workplace. Booz Allen demonstrates its commitment to employees and their lives by not only offering numerous life-friendly benefits and programs, but also continually making improvements through our Work Life Program Office and task forces.

• My supervisor treats me fairly • My supervisor treats me with respect • My supervisor handles my work-related issues satisfactorily • My supervisor handles my personal issues satisfactorily • My supervisor acknowledges when I do my work well • My supervisor tells me when my work needs improvement • My supervisor is open to hearing my opinion or feedback • My supervisor helps me develop to my fullest potential • I can trust what my supervisor tells me These questions outline pretty succinctly what a supervisor needs to do to keep employees motivated and on target. This relationship is critical for driving success in an organization. So, if you believe that you’re losing good employees because of money, you may need to rethink. They may be saying, “You don’t pay me enough money to put up with my bad supervisor.”

Our leaders have an open door policy with staff and the firm has a 360-degree appraisal process, which allows staff to provide input to their colleagues’—and leaders’—annual assessments. This open, inclusive approach to feedback and communication is a defining characteristic of Booz Allen and one that contributes significantly to our success. In addition, the firm’s 360-degree review process, gives all employees an opportunity to dispute what has been said on their assessments, both during the debriefing process, where the reviewer presents the assessment to the person reviewed and his/her supervisors, and in writing on the final assessment before it is filed. Depending on the issue, we have human resources representatives and/or legal advisors available to listen to staff concerns about their leadership, colleagues, work environment, etc., and act on their behalf. Employees have the ability to and are encouraged to reach out directly to senior leaders in their organization if a problem is not being resolved, and each organization is also assigned a human resources representative with whom employees can have candid conversations about issues or grievances. Okinawans have a remarkable tradition called ‘moai’ (mo-eye). A moai is an informal group created by people who commit to offer emotional, social or even financial assistance to one another. The concept originated when farmers would meet on a regular basis to discuss the best way to plant crops and how to support one another should their crops fail.

A plethora of definitions exist for organizational culture. Various individuals define culture as how an organization goes about meeting its goals and missions, how an organization solves problems, or as a deeply rooted value that shapes the behavior of individuals within the group. In reality, organization culture is all of these things. In its entirety, organizational culture consists of an organization’s shared values, symbols, behaviors, and assumptions. Simply put, organization culture is “the way we do things around here.”

Today, members of these social cooperatives meet one another’s practical needs: problemsolving, planning, pulling resources, and collaboration. They also serve as extended family where social and emotional needs are met, such as managing a crisis, reducing stress, connecting emotionally, and, at times, assuaging grief. Essentially, a moai is a group of people who “have your back” and commit to all aspects of your well-being. The tradition of moai is relevant to business models in a number of important ways. The best company cultures are not just highfunctioning environments where business gets done, they are also cohorts of people who feel connected to one another and to the impact they make on the organization. When organizations embrace the concept of moai, the result will be a well-oiled machine where relational capital is high, benchmarks are routinely met, trust is commonplace, and empowerment becomes the norm. Jack Welch famously said, “The soft stuff is the hard stuff.” Those of us involved in business know this is true. Soft stuff, like company culture and communication, makes or breaks businesses, and it’s often the most difficult to change. Rather than produce another newsletter that no one reads or a boring corporate training to “improve communication,” invest resources in building an organizational moai. best places to work in kentucky 2012

In our organization at MassMutual we have three levels of culture. Our first level is that of the individual. At this level the main thrust is to motivate the employee so that he or she will meet the wishes of the employer. The second level consists of the group where management focuses on relationships among employees and the formation of a group identity. The third level is the organization itself, and the goal at this level is to create a smooth and efficiently running organization. If a worker is not properly motivated to carry out his or her tasks, or if a department is having trouble working together, then the organization as a whole will suffer. Communication is the lifeblood of our company. I often tell our employees that “you can never over communicate.” Our company delivers information, provides inspiration and serves accountability. MassMutual is made of people, and people need to be taken care of and feel like their voices are valued and appreciated. People also feel respected when they are informed and kept up to date with information so they can be more productive at their jobs. We all feel that we benefit from this culture that makes us a “Best Place to Work in Kentucky”. role satisfaction

aRGI Financial Group Edward Jones MassMutual Financial Group: assurance Financial Group

FroM an eXpert:

FroM a winner:

Role Satisfaction has a significant impact on the overall success of your operation. Employee Job Satisfaction is defined as “an individual’s reaction to the job experience.” Retention increases and productivity are positively affected when employees are satisfied with their position and level of responsibility and feel needed and challenged in their role.

By defining solid career paths, associates offering upcoming opportunities to existing employees, rolling out a new employee recognition program and offering a competitive benefits package, ARGI has contributed to the “workforce family” experience. We began testing for employees natural abilities in their work environment several years ago to ensure skills and talents were aligned with the right jobs. This has helped tremendously in our employees’ satisfaction, with the work being performed and maximizing the skills of our entire team.

There are several components that impact an employee’s rating of their overall satisfaction: pay, promotion, benefits, supervisor, co-workers, work conditions, communication, safety, productivity, and the work itself. Many employers think that pay is the most important factor in role satisfaction, but this has not been found to be true. Employees are more concerned with working in a position they enjoy. Several factors figure into whether or not a person enjoys their role. If the employee is rewarded for high performance in doing the work, he/she may find the job more satisfying. When an employer considers rewards, the choices can range from providing an improved work environment (a corner office, a nicer chair) to higher security and more responsibility. Of all of these types of incentives, money is one of the few that we can measure most easily. Money can often have a powerful effect on job satisfaction; while pay is measurable, it is not the only factor to satisfaction and commitment to an organization. The more satisfied an employee is with their job, the more they will produce and the healthier they will be. As you consider how to create a satisfied, winning team, look at the full range of choices when evaluating how to structure the overall reward emphasis.

Pediatric & adolescent

We have everyone fill out a Kolbe Profile index, which ranks how they would naturally perform job functions, and we use it in our hiring process to fit the right person to the job. We have also used it in team building and coaching exercises with existing employees (who were hired before we used it) to help understand each other and work together better. Teamwork is an integral part of what we do. We believe it helps everyone to feel like they’re a part of the organization and not just a number. We clearly define the organization’s goals and objectives year over year, so each team member can know how they play a part in achieving them, and we celebrate together when goals and milestones are reached. We all work very hard, but we make sure to enjoy ourselves along the way. We are constantly evolving, constantly changing and striving to improve ourselves. We believe the experience we deliver to our clients is directly related to the experience we deliver to our employees. FroM an eXpert: An effective leadership training and development program is essential for the long-term success of any organization. Investing in your key contributing leaders will not only ensure they are prepared to execute on your business plan, but also will lead to engagement of these leaders and overall loyalty to your organization. Specifically, a focused and strategic training program will help in a number of ways: save money – It is much more cost-effective to prepare your existing workforce than to find and hire new workers. As some baby boomers exit the work force, they are being replaced by less-experienced cohorts. This shortage of qualified leaders makes training and developing tomorrow’s leaders even more important. improve morale and performance – Improved morale directly correlates with increased performance. Employees are more loyal to companies that value their growth and provide career opportunities. Developing leaders can improve job satisfaction and loyalty to companies. Leader’s performance goes up with added knowledge and positive attitudes. better facilitate leadership transition – Many newly promoted or hired leaders are thrown to the wolves without an understanding of how to lead others or lead other leaders. An effective leadership program will address current and future leadership needs, focusing on the different types of transitions that leaders go through in each stage of advancement. Each transition requires learning new skills and values. Top leadership teams spend precious time determining how to prepare the organization for impending changes, yet many fail to prepare their most precious resource—their people. An investment in training and leadership development can more than pay for itself by improving performance, productivity and profitability. FroM a winner: Edward Jones relies on homegrown leadership: identifying, developing and promoting talented associates up the ranks, all the way to the managing partner’s office. This talent is often found among financial advisors who work in our nearly 11,000 branches. In fact, more than 60% of current firm principals have financial-advisor experience, and every firm managing partner was a financial advisor first. Plentiful leadership opportunities are offered to develop this talent. In addition to a regional leader with ultimate responsibility, each region includes three other key leader positions and additional leadership posts, all filled by financial advisors volunteering their time. Training is provided, including virtual and live instructor-led courses, meetings, conference calls, e-learning or role-specific intranet sites. Branch office administrators (BOAs) also have leadership opportunities and training for those roles. Some sit on the region leadership team, some ultimately become financial advisors, and a few become firm principals. Edward Jones also prides itself on offering the financial industry’s best mentoring program. Veterans help rookie financial advisors and BOAs make the most of the opportunities. The firm has more than 4,500 field trainers and 5,200 mentors in the U.S. taking time from their businesses to help new financial advisors. More than 1,100 BOAs also help mentor trainees. The firm’s Goodknight Program allows a financial advisor with too many households to hand-select a newer financial advisor to mentor, advise and, ultimately, give some inactive clients to jumpstart their new branch. These Goodknight financial advisors do better than those who start from scratch, and the veteran’s client service invariably improves, too. FroM a winner:

A great work environment consists of many elements, the most important being natural light. A naturally lit space lifts everyone’s spirits and creates a feeling of well-being. It can also lead to better cooperation between staff.

Blue & Co. firmly believes in the Fowler Measle & Bell importance of providing a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing Genentech, Inc. and safe work environment that contributes to our employees’ ability Greater Louisville Inc. to perform at the highest level MassMutual Financial Group: possible. Although many of our assurance Financial Group professionals spend considerable time out of their offices working Tenmast Software Company on-site at our clients’ locations, we want them to view our Blue & Co. offices as their “home away from home.” This is the place where they reconnect with peers, seek guidance and direction from Supervisors and Partners, develop their technical expertise, and collaborate with professional team members.

When laying out department spaces, consider the relationships between departments and ease of flow and cooperation necessary. Place service areas and meeting rooms to convenience several groups or departments. Noise can be a problem in open offices especially when many staff members use the telephone constantly. Many “fit out” materials now have acoustical properties built in, which greatly add to the noise reduction in open spaces. Desk units can be fitted with sound absorbing fabrics in wonderful new patterns and colors. Carpets and ceiling tile are worth upgrading to help with noise reduction. One of the biggest challenges in open office spaces is the HVAC flow. Some folks are warm all the time and want the temperature lowered, which directly effects how others feel. Multiple zones, although more costly to install, actually work best. Don’t underestimate the benefit of art in the work place. We can all appreciate our environment when a hallway or meeting room contains beautiful works. Often, when customers arrive for a meeting, a great ice breaker is to talk about the art and artist who created the works in the room. Art is also a good catalyst for creativity. Lastly, a sense of security when in the work place is becoming increasingly important. Consider just one main entrance for all guests with security checks before going beyond the main lobby.

To accomplish these goals, Blue’s offices are designed to provide a combination of private, quiet work spaces as well as areas to meet in groups or conduct consultations with clients. Large, flat screen monitors project work files or presentations for more productive group discussions. Video conference equipment connects all eight Blue & Co. offices across three states to facilitate interaction with co-workers or special committees while eliminating the need for time-consuming travel. Break rooms offer an opportunity to relax, grab a cup of coffee or soft drink, enjoy lunch or share an evening meal when working late during busy season. Security at each Blue location ensures the safety of all personnel even when they are working after hours or on weekends. As a professional services company, Blue recognizes that its greatest assets are the outstanding individuals who work to serve our clients; supporting them with a positive work environment only makes sense.
