Celebrating 11 years of Best Places to Work in Kentucky:
The Diagram for Success 11 years ago the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program launched with 35 winners in two size categories. Fast forward to 2015 where we celebrate 90 winners, representing the best of Kentucky in three size categories. Out of those original 35 winning companies, five have made the list every year. In total we have celebrated 206 unique companies as a best places to work, and 144 of those companies have made the list more than once. These companies are one of the reasons why Kentucky continues to be a great place to live and work, and they represent two of our most valuable resources – a quality workforce and world-class businesses. But there is always room for improvement, and we believe strengthening these assets will ensure the success of the Commonwealth’s future. Program: conceived in 2004 to celebrate Kentucky’s elite employers who have successfully created work environments that staff enjoy and thrive in.
Goal: to raise the bar among employers, creating excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace, thereby attracting talented people for years to come.
Part One: Employer Survey (25% of each company’s score) consists of an employer questionnaire used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information.
Part Three: In-depth Analysis Combined employer/employee data allows the experts at Best Companies Group to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company.
Eligibility: open to all publicly or privately held organizations, either for-profit or not-for-profit. Companies must have at least 15 employees working in Kentucky to be eligible.
Part Two: Employee Survey (75% of each company’s score) involves a confidential 78 question employee survey which is used to evaluate the employee workplace experience and company culture.
Part Four: Making the List BCG’s experts determine which organizations meet the criteria necessary to make the list, and these employers are then compared to one another and ranked within their prospective company-size categories (small, medium or large).
Part Five: Best Companies Group Employee Feedback Report Participating companies receive a four-part Employee Feedback Report summarizing the data collected through the employee survey process. In addition, the report includes employee survey comments and Kentucky benchmarking data from the winners and non-winners. This report will help each company better understand its workforce and equip it with the information to make improvements.
The winning companies on the following pages are indeed innovators and set an example for other companies to follow. As you read their profiles, you’ll see the often unique ways in which these companies are able to help their employees, their businesses and their communities. Kentucky SHRM. Engaging People. Leading Organizations. Advancing Kentucky.
We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of 90 companies who have set the standard for creating positive working environments. As president of the Kentucky Chamber, I am pleased so many Kentucky employers hold such a strong commitment to their employees. I am especially pleased that 57 of the 90 companies to be named a “Best Places to Work” this year are members of the Kentucky Chamber. From banks, to colleges, to health care facilities, this year’s list of winners encompasses a broad spectrum of services. In order to make Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able not only to educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we also must entice those from out-of-state to want to work here. The Best Places program provides your company with a tool to measure workplace satisfaction each year. The Kentucky Chamber is proud to offer the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program—it provides a perfect venue to celebrate the companies who are doing their part to make the Commonwealth a great place to live and work. We strive to do our part for Kentucky businesses year-round in the halls of our state’s Capitol and at our Frankfort headquarters. From advocacy, to providing current economic data, to the business education programs we offer, the Kentucky Chamber works each day to unite business and advance Kentucky. We thank you for your participation in the Best Places initiative, and congratulate you on your efforts!
Congratulations to all of the 2015 Best Places to Work in Kentucky winning companies!

By Cathy Fyock, Lyle Sussman, and Kevin Williamson
We live in a time of cynicism. This is a time when Dilbert—a comic strip about office politics, corporate bureaucracy, and incompetence—is often cut out and posted in the very offices it parodies, a testament to our collective cynicism about our work. Cynicism is contagious in a company, but so too is compassion. You have the power to choose a positive attitude and help it spread. If it can spread through your organization, then even a single small choice to choose a good attitude can become part of the company culture. In Hallelujah! An Anthem for Purposeful Work, we’ve outlined these key principles for developing a culture of caring for employees. You don’t hire workers. You hire people who work. Everyone, including you, has a story and some emotional baggage, and you won’t find those stories in personnel files. Home life and work life affect one another. Face it, acknowledge it, and view it as an opportunity for creating purposeful work, not a barrier to it. A family-friendly corporate culture will support the Why and improve the How and What. Respecting the pain and problems of others is a good thing; helping them resolve issues when possible is even better. If your company does not provide resources for assisting employees with their problems, your local community might. Seek and provide referrals to the appropriate agencies whenever appropriate. Caring about others and helping with their problems does not mean that you must become an enabler or a victim. Co-dependency helps no one. A purposeful message for your organization can be translated as a purposeful message for an employee: Just as we, as a company, have the choice to become better and more focused on values, so too can you exercise the choice to become better and more focused on values.

BEST PLACES TO WORK IN KENTUCKY 2015
When you hear disgruntled, cynical naysayers around you, say: “We all have two options: to continue to be depressed and cynical, or to help find solutions for making things better. What do you choose?” Any job important enough to be allocated a budget for salary is worthy of respect, regardless of the absolute dollar value of that salary. Everyone on your payroll deserves to be treated with respect, no matter whether that person holds a GED or Ph.D. No one on your payroll is or should be “just an employee.” If you say that “people are our most important resource,” start proving it every day, one employee at a time. It can be as simple and as powerful as listening for a two-minute conversation. Employees should be both appreciated as people and (literally) appreciating as valued assets to the company. The simplest solution for turning your bad day into a good day: put down your emotional baggage and help co-workers do the same. We all need a plate of cookies now and again. How would you know if you had a caring culture? The answer is simple. The people you cared about would repay you by choosing to be creative, motivated, and productive. Even though they are on payroll, they have decided to become volunteers for your mission.
This article is in part excerpted from the book, Hallelujah! An Anthem for Purposeful Work, written by Cathy Fyock, Lyle Sussman, and Kevin Williamson. Each of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky winning companies received a copy of the book as a gift from KYSHRM. What DRIVES Kentucky Employees? The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program and survey serves a lot of purposes: it gives employees an opportunity to provide feedback to their employers, it allows employers to take a look at their employment processes and, for 90 of our applicants, it provides an opportunity to celebrate making the list! But it doesn’t stop there. The feedback reports that result from the survey provide an aggregate look at a broad spectrum of Kentucky companies and what their employees look for in regards to motivation. In particular it answers the question, “What drives Kentucky employees to engage in the workplace?” The results from the 2015 survey are in, and the following statements from the survey have the biggest impact on overall employee engagement, meaning they are the 10 drivers for Kentucky employees:

Strategic Job Searching: What employers seek in candidates
Amanda G. Schagane | Career Coach | Gatton College of Business & Economics, UK | www.uky.edu
Job seekers face tough interview questions like What makes you the best candidate for this position? and What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses? What if you already knew what attributes that employer associated with the ideal candidate? Having such knowledge in your pocket would certainly prove useful when framing informed responses to difficult fit-based questions like these. According to a recent survey of employers by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the top five desired candidate attributes include leadership skills, ability to work in a team, written communication skills, problem-solving skills and strong work ethic. But your job search is here in Kentucky. What do Kentucky companies seek in candidates? Does it vary by company? According to Nick Williams, HR Manager with Big Ass Solutions, “When we focus in on a candidate we certainly care about the resume, but we care significantly more about who they are as people, how they are driven. We want to know if they are curious, innovative, hands-on. It is less about the skills to do the job more about their ability to help push the business.” So how can you as a candidate figure out what individual companies seek in ideal candidates? The quickest way to gather valuable information about a company is to inspect their website carefully. key sections like About Us and Job Opportunities. Read the company history if it is included. Often employers will ask in interviews what a candidate knows about the company, and knowing a few nuggets can effectively prove you have done your research. Consider the company’s mission statement and core values if they are included. Are they in line with your personal values? “Papa John’s lives out the core value PAPA, People Are Priority Always, in everything we do, from our communities to our customers to our team members. Our recruiting process includes questions around job-specific competencies as well as behavioral interviewing to further understand if the candidate fits into our core values and the culture of our company,” says Jennifer Hauber, Director of Human Resources at Papa John’s International.
Next, conduct a LinkedIn company search and study the company profile carefully. Note the recent updates section for updates about news and special projects. These updates can be great conversation starters for email introductions and during interviews. The most valuable information you can gain from LinkedIn research is in the section called How You’re Connected. It displays the number of employees on LinkedIn that work at a specific company—a prime group for networking. If you are not directly connected to someone who works there, review the second-degree connections closely. Remember, on LinkedIn, second-degree connections know someone that you know. Go through those second-degree connections and ask for an introduction via a common connection. Ideally you will have connections that work at a company or friendly connections to facilitate an introduction, but this is not always the case. Depending on how employees have set up their accounts, you may be able to reach out to them directly without a facilitated introduction. In this case you should address your interest in the company and stick with conversation starters like favorite things about working there, advice on best ways to network with employees or suggested professional associations for the industry. Joining groups on LinkedIn will allow you to contact fellow group members, so strategically join groups associated with your industry/job function. According to Candice Selph, Personnel Manager at Three Rivers District Health Department, “Candidates active in professional development associations typically demonstrate a passion for their career path and a commitment to continued learning… [They] provide networking opportunities, leadership development, research, information and tools to be more effective and efficient in the workplace. Well-rounded, knowledgeable candidates are at a premium, and we seek to hire individuals who are dedicated to developing both personally and professionally.”
According to a report from ABC News, 80% of jobs are found through networking.

Winners Hall of Fame
Celebrating our 10- and 11-year winners A commitment to workplace success is a choice that is made day after day, year after year by each of our winning companies. We take special pride in the following companies that have proven just how committed they are by continually putting their company to the test by going through the survey process that results in our Best Places to Work in Kentucky winners.
10-year winners: 10-year winners for 2015: Why do you think your company has made the list for 10 years?
When associates face personal or professional difficulties, we stand by them. This might mean quick assistance in a natural disaster, paid leave or medical exceptions, cards and emails, or dozens of associates showing up at a funeral.
BIM employees know they are valued beyond an “end to the company’s means.” Instead, they are first valued as a unique individual …and secondly, they are valued for each of their individual skills and gifts, from receptionist to senior analyst, that contribute to the success of the company.
This award is evidence of our commitment to employee satisfaction and work-life balance. The administration, faculty, and staff have worked hard to ensure that SCC is a family-friendly environment, offering excellent benefits including generous leave policies and flexible schedules.
