THE DIAGRAM FOR SUCCESS Does your team have what it takes? Kentucky continues to be a great place to live and work due in part to two of our most valuable resources — a quality workforce and world-class businesses. But there is always room for improvement, and we believe strengthening these assets will ensure the Commonwealth’s leadership into the future economy. Program: conceived in 2004 to celebrate Kentucky’s elite employers who have successfully created work environments that staff enjoy and thrive in.

G oal: to raise the bar among employers, creating excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace, thereby attracting talented people for years to come.

Eligibility: open to all publicly or privately held organizations, either for-profit or not-for-profit. Companies must have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky to be eligible.

Part One: Employee Survey (75% of each company’s score)

Part Two: Employer Survey (25% of each company’s score)

involves a confidential 76 question employee survey which is used to evaluate the employees’ workplace experience and company culture.

consists of an employer questionnaire used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information.

?

Part Three: In-depth Analysis Combined employee/employer data allows the experts at BCG to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company.

Part Four: Making the List BCG’s experts determine which organizations meet the criteria necessary to make the list, and these employers are then compared to one another and ranked within their prospective company-size categories (small/medium or large).

Part Five: Valuable Feedback Report Participating companies receive an employee feedback report summarizing the data collected through the employee survey process. In addition, the report includes employee survey comments and Kentucky benchmarking data from the participating and winning companies. This feedback report will help each company better understand its workforce and equip it with the inoformation to make improvements.

The winning companies on the following pages are indeed innovators and set an example for other companies to follow. As you read their profiles, you’ll see the often unique ways in which these companies are able to help their employees, their businesses and their communities. We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of 73 companies who have set the standard for creating positive working environments. As president of the Kentucky Chamber, I am pleased so many Kentucky employers hold such a strong commitment to their employees. I am especially pleased that 44 of the 73 companies to be named a “Best Places to Work” this year are members of the Kentucky Chamber. From banks, to colleges, to health care facilities, this year’s list of winners encompasses a broad spectrum of services. In order to make Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able not only to educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we also must entice those from out-of-state to want to work here. The Best Places program provides your company with a tool to measure workplace satisfaction each year. These results will help you create positive measures that will, in the long run, help advance Kentucky. We applaud you for your commitment to your employees and to the Commonwealth. Congratulations! Relationship with Supervisors

TOP SCORERS (IN ALPHA ORDER):

Winners Value Relationships With Their Employees

Alure Salon and Day Spa

Several 2013 Best Places to Work in Kentucky winners talk about how important their relationships are with their employees.

Symbiotix, Inc.

At Alure Salon and Day Spa, we strongly believe that developing an open line of communication and developing the relationship between the salon leadership team and our service providers is key to helping our service providers reach their full potential and maximizing our success. We schedule quarterly one-on-one meetings, as well as monthly companywide meetings to further this goal. We value each of our service providers and strive to find unique ways to show our appreciation of their efforts and celebrate their successes on a daily basis.

Connected Nation Integrity IT MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group

At Symbiotix, our unique culture enables employees to approach company leaders directly and without the formalities and barriers that may exist in other organizations. Our open door practice contributes to stronger relationships and a sense of everyone belonging to a cohesive team. Supervisors frequently expose staff to new responsibilities or grant approval for offsite training related to an individual’s area of expertise. This builds trust and allows employees to pursue their own career development. Remote employees utilize technology to remain connected to their supervisors and have an opportunity to interact with them one on one during companywide staff retreats.

Organizations Can Drive Performance with Robust Leadership Development

Dennis Bodziony | Owner | Alure Salon and Day Spa At Integrity IT, our purpose is to improve the lives of those that we touch. This philosophy starts with how we treat our employees. Employees need support more than management. We strive to give them freedom, along with the necessary support to make a difference within our company and with the customers we serve. Employees know when you have their best interest at heart. We work with them to find what they are passionate about and provide opportunities to pursue those interests, even by creating new positions. Our employees are our most important customer. Phil Miller | President | Integrity IT Connected Nation utilizes the very thing that we promote — communication to enhance the relationship between supervisors and employees. Through quarterly “Connection” sessions where our entire staff are gathered together via webinar to discuss a topic of importance to our organization and a monthly internal newsletter where personal and professional achievements are recognized, Connected Nation supervisors are able to easily and regularly relate to employees.

Symbiotix, Inc. Our agency thrives because we value each employee’s opinions and perspectives. We provide an environment of mutual respect for each other and work as a team to solve problems or face tough issues. Employees have no fear of their supervisors which encourages everyone to provide honest feedback, even if it is unpleasant. Employees are encouraged to try to solve problems on their own but at the same time are comfortable with asking for additional assistance and recommendations from their supervisors. This promotes and contributes to a true open door policy. When employees feel their ideas and contributions are accepted and respected, everyone does their best to try to live up to the performance expectations set for them. Kevin T. Collins | General Agent MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group

Work Environment

(IN ALPHA ORDER):

Work Space: More Than Just An Office

ARGI Financial Group Edward Jones Genentech, Inc. Integrity IT

In recent years many studies have been published focusing on the rapid changes that are occurring in the physical work environments of American workers. These studies have identified trends in workplace design that are focused on creating workplaces that are more effective, satisfying, and integrated with the goals of the organization. These trends have included changes such as the reduction or elimination of corner offices; offices with glass walls on the interior instead of wrapping around the exterior of the building; employees in open workstations on the perimeter with access to views and daylight, and greater flexibility in the assigning of physical work space with less emphasis on assigned desks and more emphasis on flexible work spaces.

MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group People Plus, Inc. River Road Asset Management, LLC

conference room or designated group meeting space. Imagine fifty private offices with 400 sq. ft. each at $30/sq. ft. annual cost. That is a total of 20,000 sq. ft. for a total annual leasing cost of $600,000. An efficient private office can be designed today within 200 sq. ft. or less, and the net change from 400 sq. ft. to 200 sq. ft. results in a savings of $300,000.

At the core of many of these design trends is the increasing demand by workers at all levels of organizations for greater access to daylight and fresh air, noise control, and greater flexibility in personalizing their physical work environment. This process of personalization also includes greater expectation for ergonomic equipment, chairs, and keyboards; along with adjustable task lighting and personalized control of heating and cooling. Other current workplace design trends are the direct result of technology and the flexibility that technology provides for working anytime and anywhere. For example, an integrated design process has become commonplace where adaptability, mobility, and collaboration are the driving forces for creating work spaces that support teleworking and remote information access. Another reality of the new technology and knowledge-based economy is the fact that younger workers are much less concerned about having a defined office space, but are looking much more for a work environment that provides flexibility for working in different modes and that provides multiple opportunities for collaboration.

But while selective design trends are desirable, effective and appropriate for many companies, it is obviously true that many are not appropriate or effective for all. And so how does a modern organization define and choose the work environments that will most effectively support the organization’s goals and values, while enhancing innovation, productivity and employee satisfaction? An effective place to start, but not one that many organizations take the time to think about, is to do a regular survey of what everyone in the organization perceives are the positive and negative qualities of the work environment. This simple action can provide enormously valuable information that is not always recognized by management, and which could result in minimal changes with little cost. One of the goals of such a study would be to define workplace issues and possible changes that could result in more productive and more satisfying work environments for everyone in the organization.

For many companies, however, the concept of teleworking, remote access, open bullpens and collaborative work spaces has as much to do with increasing productivity and boosting employee satisfaction as it does with the realities of real estate costs. For example, law firms are facing the new reality that young lawyers are not as motivated by the allure of the large private office. Today, legal work can be done individually in a limited space with access to the internet and the legal resources that it offers, or an attorney can meet with their client in a

In summary, no one can deny that the nature of work is changing more rapidly than at any time in the last century. Often, and without the aid of outside consultants, it is the employees of an organization that can best define the positive and negative attributes of the organization’s work environments and how they affect productivity and job satisfaction. Pay & Benefits

(IN ALPHA ORDER): Integrity IT

Compensation is More Than Just a Paycheck

MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group Symbiotix, Inc.

Compensation plays a vital role in creating a best place to work. But, simply paying the highest salaries does not necessarily result in an effective compensation program. Companies like Google are known for offering unique rewards packages, but the perfect program is different for every organization. When it comes to compensation and rewards, the key is identifying your company’s ideal candidate and designing a balanced, attractive total rewards program that appeals to that type of employee. For employees, compensation is an important consideration when evaluating job satisfaction. Organizations who are Top Scorers in the 2013 Pay and Benefits category received high rankings from their employees regarding fair pay and overall satisfaction with the benefits plan. These employers have developed a total rewards package that appeals to the needs and lifestyles of their employees. If you are concerned your current rewards strategies are not producing the desired results, partner with your company’s leadership to evaluate the effectiveness of your compensation philosophy. Projects developed in a vacuum tend to be theoretical, or they focus on technical matters with little attention to practical implementation. For total rewards programs to be effective, you must identify what drives value in the organization and then relentlessly and consistently reward those outcomes. Organizations can use a variety of methods to reward the workforce for productive behavior, and many are turning to unique benefit programs to cover this ground. Best in class benefit programs are commonly associated with large budgets and staff, however, companies with limited budgets and manpower can still implement cost-effective benefit packages that employees value. In addition to health insurance, time off and retirement plans, voluntary benefits can provide useful perks to employees with minimal or no cost to the company. Three-fourths of companies offer some form of voluntary benefits, according to the national 2012/2013 Benefits USA survey conducted by Compdata Surveys. Accident insurance, cancer care and cafeteria discounts are the most popular offerings among employers. Other programs gaining prevalence include pet insurance, legal assistance, carpooling and movie ticket discounts.

A concierge service is a lavish benefit, but is another way some organizations are adding value to the workplace. These optional benefits save employees time and effort by making specialized services more accessible. With the aging population, other benefits gaining traction among employers include elder care and employee assistance programs. Offering elder care benefits can be as simple as providing long-term insurance discounts and allowing employees to maintain flexible schedules to care for aging family members. Alternatively, they can go as far as offering referral services, support group access or geriatric counseling. These can make a company stand out since only 26 percent of organizations offer elder care benefits at this time. Some benefits can even build value for an organization by adding new competencies and skill sets to the workforce. More than 85 percent of employers offer tuition reimbursement to employees. Most companies apply a maximum annual benefit and require the employee to work a defined period of time to retain the reimbursement. By investing in employees, organizations encourage loyalty and dedication. An organization’s total rewards program does not materialize over night. It takes years of hard work to develop it, refine it to meet internal priorities and company culture, and integrate it with organizational processes. Companies consistently rated high in pay and benefits are constantly evaluating and tweaking their plans to remain competitive. Success is not so much dependent on decoding the perfect rate of pay, as it is about ensuring your compensation plan fits with the organization’s business strategy. Greg J. Wolf | Managing Principal | Compdata Consulting. www.compdataconsulting.com

Unique Leadership Program Provides Insight on Kentucky

The Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility Integrity IT MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group

When you do an internet search for “leadership”, you will quickly see more than River Road Asset Management, LLC 312 million links — it is clear that much is said about leadership. We begin with a rather simple definition: Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Each of the organizations being honored as Best Places to Work have obviously invested in excellent leadership. Of the more than 70 companies being honored this year, 16 of them have had employees who have participated in the Leadership Kentucky program. Leadership Kentucky formed in 1984 with the idea that new generations of leaders and risk-takers could and would be encouraged to urge progress in their hometowns, their regions and statewide. It’s something of a back-to-school experience for leaders from business, health-care, public affairs, education and the social services, who come together for the first time each year in midMay for a three-day retreat that is repeated each month through November. Many are new to the state, transferred here for a job, while others are lifelong Kentuckians, perhaps newly promoted to positions of influence in their companies and institutions. Their common interest is to learn more about the state’s history, the issues confronting it today and the efforts in place to meet challenges to Kentucky’s well-being. How has it worked out? In those 28 years: 1,435 have graduated with about 50 more class members added each year. The list of graduates includes Steve Trager (pictured left), CEO and Chairman of Republic Bank, a 2013 Best Places to Work in Kentucky winner and a graduate of the 2007 Leadership Kentucky class. In addition, past graduates speak highly of their experience with the program: “ Who knows how long – if ever – it would have taken me to see the greatness that surely lies in Kentucky’s future.” “ I would not know the beauty, cultural complexity and diversity of the entire state.” “ I would have remained complacent and cynical about engaging in the battle to change Kentucky.”

“ I would not have been able to participate in one of the most beneficial educational experiences in my life. I only wish every citizen of the commonwealth could have this experience. Leadership Kentucky is life changing.” Year after year, graduates report the same sense of graduating from Leadership Kentucky with a deeper understanding of what needs to be done in Kentucky, a deeper commitment to being part of it and a new network for allies — their classmates — to bring change about. Leadership Kentucky graduates have been inspired to seek public office. They’ve banded together in philanthropic efforts. They’ve assembled “think and act” summits on issues such as early childhood education. Less tangibly but no less important, they’ve returned home to their jobs and daily lives with their complacency erased and ready to solve problems. And there are problems. In his seminal study of school reform published last year by the University Press of Kentucky, A History of Education in Kentucky, William E. Ellis reminded us in that Kentucky quickly became a leader among the new nation’s states but ceded some ground as the 20th Century began: “The Commonwealth of Kentucky, based on its population, its economy, and its location, declined from being one of the major states in the Union to being one of the poorest, bypassed by many of the important chances of the latter 19th Century.” As we move deeper into the 21st Century, Kentucky will need new generations of leaders to prod and push progress — and Leadership Kentucky is committed to playing a leading role in nurturing those leaders, just as Boone’s Kentucky nurtured Clay, and as Clay’s Kentucky nurtured Lincoln, and Lincoln’s Kentucky nurtured the nation’s moral awakening toward a new birth of freedom that brought us, in time, to a nation richer in opportunity for citizens. Today’s challenges, though different, are as daunting, and Leadership Kentucky exists to prepare Kentuckians to meet them. Diana B. Ratliff | President | Leadership Kentucky, Inc. | leadershipky.org

TOP SCORERS (IN ALPHA ORDER):

Diagnosing Organizational Growing Pains: Plan to Transform or Fail?

ARGI Financial Group Integrity IT MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group River Road Asset Management, LLC

Why do 9 out of 10 small businesses routinely fail? Why do only 4% of new businesses still exist after ten years? Why are almost half of the 25 companies profiled in Peters’ and Waterman’s In Search of Excellence no longer in existence, bankrupt, or performing poorly? Why are only 15% of the 1957 original S&P’s 500 still on the list today? Management gurus contend that good companies emerge by being at the right place at the right time and develop opportunistically—by accident and not by design. They fail to succeed when times change and they are either unable or unwilling to change their cultures, processes, or structures to transform their companies and take them to the next level. Often, organizations fail to create a culture for metrics and analytics, in what management expert Peter Senge refers to as “learning” organizations. What are the signs that your organization needs to rethink its approach and realign the culture—to develop a culture of accountability that learns and therefore can grow in a systematic way? Consider these five warning signs that may indicate your organization needs realignment in order to sustain ongoing growth. 1. “It’s not my job.” One manufacturer felt that the only way for their people to step up to the plate and move the company to the next level was to develop job descriptions for everyone since the hue and cry of their employees was “it’s not my job.” After some discussion, the company realized that it was not a lack of job descriptions, but rather, the lack of a culture of accountability, that created this mantra. This company was finally able to realize increased growth once they were able to create a new culture in which everyone was responsible for the company’s growth. 2. “Nobody told me what to do.” If employees are unwilling or unable to see what needs to be done without being told, chances are that the culture has precluded them from this vision. Often, a leader unwittingly undermines accountability by micromanaging staff or undermining independent decision-making. As a result, staff only does what they are told to do.

3. Lots of activity without meaningful results. “Busy-ness” is not always productive, but often cultures reward employees for activity and not outcomes. Are the activities leading to outcomes that are aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the organization? If not, they may be substituting effort for intelligence. Learning organizations work smarter, not harder. 4. Playing the blame game. If individuals don’t “own” issues, it’s easy to point the finger and find scape goats for missed deadlines or opportunities. In learning cultures, there is a systematic way to create ownership for issues so that the blame game is a thing of the past. 5. Organizational blinders. If departments are working totally independent of one another without a focus on the common goals, then silos may be created, often hampering organizational success. Silos may even work at cross-purposes, with one department’s win resulting in a loss for another department, foiling organizational growth. Long-term growth for every organization will require fine-tuning and realigning the culture in order to remain relevant and sustainable, since every organization will likely face new competition, scarce resources, advancing technology, and other unforeseen circumstances. Creating a learning organization by focusing on creating a culture of accountability can only be achieved when leaders identify these early warning signs of the need for transformation. Training & Development

(IN ALPHA ORDER):

Organizations Can Drive Performance with Robust Leadership Development

Integrity IT River Road Asset Management, LLC

Independent, in-depth studies consistently reach the same conclusion: Organizations that invest in leadership development perform better than those that don’t. Complex times like these, defined by constant uncertainty and great opportunity, magnify that truth even more. A recent report by research firm Bersin & Associates states it plainly: “Leadership development is not just about developing leaders — it is about creating a culture of accountability and performance. Leadership development creates a magnet for high performers and fosters a high-performance organization. That is why organizations that are ‘built to last’ have strong histories of leadership development.”

door causes tremendous headaches and expense for organizations, from advertising, recruitment and relocation costs to time spent training new employees. “Developing, coaching and promoting people internally is significantly less expensive than the costs typically required to hire someone externally,” Bersin says. Some studies indicate that 50 percent of new hires at the executive level last only six to nine months.

The Conference Board’s groundbreaking report on “The Business Value of Leadership Development” arrived at a strikingly similar view: “One of the most influential internal engines to drive change is a leadership development program that sets out to nurture management talent that is entrepreneurial, enterprise-wide, and globally recruited.”

Meanwhile, Bersin’s research shows that companies investing strategically in leadership development to deal with gaps in their talent pipelines generate: • 60 percent improved growth • 66 percent stronger bench strength • 62 percent improvement in employee retention

Studies show investments in leadership development: • Improve bottom-line financial performance • Attract and retain talent • Strengthen strategy and execution • Accelerate leader growth at all levels Improve bottom-line financial performance HR analytics expert McBassi & Company launched a series of investment portfolios to track correlations between companies’ stock prices and their levels of investment in training, including leadership development. Their conclusion in a 2010 report: “Superior human capital management is an extremely powerful predictor of an organization’s ability to outperform its competition.” The report reinforced a previous Harvard Business Review study by McBassi’s principals. That study found that companies with high scores for their investments in human capital delivered stock market returns that were five times higher than that of companies with less emphasis on human capital. McBassi reports that “human capital management is fast emerging as an essential core competence (possibly the essential core competence) for organizations.” Attract and retain talent As Bersin & Associates states in its 2011 report on “High-Impact Leadership Development”: “Great leaders attract, hire and inspire great people. A mediocre manager will never attract or retain highperforming employees.” And watching talented people walk out the

Strengthen strategy and execution The Conference Board’s study reviewed best practices at some of the world’s best-known and most influential organizations, including Bayer, BP, Colgate-Palmolive and Astra Zeneca. Its conclusion: Leadership development has enormous power in both shaping and changing the culture and strategy of business. It gives senior management powerful leverage to align executive behavior with business values and objectives in the quest for superior financial performance in global markets. In uncertain times, organizations can no longer afford development for development’s sake. They need a leadership strategy that closely connects with the business strategy — and equips employees with the leadership skills needed to implement it. Increase organizational agility When facing an unpredictable business environment, 86 percent of companies with strategic leadership development programs are able to respond rapidly, compared to just 52 percent of companies with less mature leadership programs, according to Bersin & Associates. A key reason why: Sophisticated leadership development programs develop a deeper, richer pipeline of talent. Historically, organizations made leadership development available only to senior executives and high potentials. Today, that trend is rapidly changing as organizations seek greater agility by unlocking the full potential of their talent pools. Employee Engagement/Satisfaction

TOP SCORERS (IN ALPHA ORDER):

Engaging Employees Through Wellness Programs

The Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility

Workplace wellness programs are one of the fastest-growing trends in employee benefits for companies concerned about health care costs — and who isn’t?

River Road Asset Management, LLC

MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group Park Community Federal Credit Union

That’s because these programs work. In fact, a 2013 study on wellness initiatives by the Society for Human Resource Management found that more than two-thirds — 68 percent — of organizations offering wellness initiatives believe they’re effective in reducing health care costs. And the majority — 86 percent — say these initiatives have improved the physical health of their employees.

Lack of understanding leads to poor participation. Engagement begins with clear communication of program benefits and incentives for participation. Wellness programs tend to be especially poorly understood by employees.

But even if you’re already onboard with this movement, are you sure you’re getting the most you can out of your wellness investment? Many employers are increasing engagement, participation and results from their wellness programs by simply beefing up their benefits communication efforts.

•E mployees may think wellness offerings are only meant for individuals with existing health conditions.

Wellness initiatives are gaining strength. Seven out of 10 organizations today offer some sort of employee wellness program, resource or service, according to SHRM. And 43 percent of these organizations increased their investment in 2012 from the previous year. In fact, a 2011 survey of government finance officers cosponsored by Colonial Life showed 90 percent had implemented some sort of wellness initiative as part of their strategy to control health care costs. Of those who did, 90 percent would recommend this strategy to others, and 65 percent would recommend it enthusiastically. The rewards for offering wellness programs directly influence the bottom line, according to a 2011 report from the National Prevention Council and the Office of the Surgeon General: •P eople who increased physical activity (2 ½ hours a week) and had a five to seven percent weight loss reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. •A nnual health care costs are $2,000 higher for smokers, $1,400 higher for people who are obese, and $6,600 higher for those with diabetes compared to nonsmokers, people who are not obese, or people who do not have diabetes. •A mere one percent reduction in weight, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol risk factors would save $83 to $103 annually in medical costs per person.

A 2011 Towers Watson survey shows most employers cite employee engagement as the biggest obstacle to changing their employees’ health risk behavior. Some possible reasons for poor participation by employees in wellness offerings include:

•E mployees don’t have enough education about the resources available to them. •E mployees don’t get clear communication when the wellness program is first launched and put in place. Better engagement may be as simple as improved communication. When employees know about programs, they consistently report a keen interest in wellness benefits. Take a personalized approach to benefits communication. If you want your employees to take advantage of your wellness offerings, make sure they’re getting the word. Communication can take a number of forms. The traditional methods — fliers and newsletters — are often accompanied today by intranet articles and emails, but they essentially use a top-down, scattershot approach. A personalized approach to communicating wellness benefits can help boost participation among employees. If your company doesn’t have the resources for a dedicated wellness program ambassador — and not many do — look for other no-cost or low-cost options. One alternative that’s working well for employers is partnering with a benefits carrier. Working closely with a carrier that can take an integrated approach to one-on-one benefits counseling can help employees better understand the full range of benefits being offered. 10 Simple Steps to Happier Employees

MassMutual Financial Group: Assurance Financial Group River Road Asset Management, LLC

Engaged employees can make all the difference in a business. My local Best Buy and its neighboring competitor coexist in shocking contrast to each other. The Best Buy is a shopper’s paradise with neat, orderly displays and plenty of helpful staff to offer great advice in a low-pressure environment. Meanwhile, the adjacent office supply store has stale displays and several areas in need of cleaning. Worse, several employees seemed to spend most of their time on cell phones — and the conversations were not about work. Why do some employees consistently go above and beyond the call of duty while others barely lift a finger? Is it a reflection of the products they sell, the environment in which they sell them, the customers to whom they sell, or the sales staff themselves? Engaged employees are not clock-watchers; they are productive, creative, and will be the first to volunteer for your most difficult assignments. When you learn how to keep your employees engaged, you will have less turnover and higher productivity. Here are 10 strategies you can implement today to re-engage your employees and keep them happy at work: 1. Ask employees for suggestions. Let them comment anonymously through a suggestion box. Read employee suggestions regularly, and implement any ideas the company can afford and that actually might work. When changes are implemented, let everyone know the source to remind your workers that you’re listening and that you care. 2. Cross-train. This develops the skills of all employees. Disengaged workers may become excited about work again, or they may take their new skills to a job that fits them better. Cross-training also allows you to shift workers from over- to under-staffed departments, especially during busy periods. The more your employees know about your business, the better they’ll be able to help your customers. 3. Find ways to reward employees through recognition. Make this meaningful by adding an extra day off, a gift certificate, or another inexpensive gift. Plus, a little healthy competition might inspire them to increase their performance. 4. Listen to employees. Have regular feedback meetings, if possible, in addition to the suggestion box. Again, use as many ideas as possible, especially when they are easy and free.

5. Seek out workers who will motivate others via their job knowledge, enthusiasm, or both. It can be intimidating and scary to start a new job. Use your veteran workers to mentor new ones — this shows the vets that they are respected and helps the newbies become more effective faster. 6. Give workers the freedom of making their own decisions, especially when dealing with customers. When a customer problem arises, it is very empowering and satisfying for both the employee and customer when the employee makes a swift decision and resolution on his own. Conversely, when the staff member has to get clearance with his supervisor before taking action, everyone waits (including the line at the customer service desk) and good feelings turn to distaste. 7. Present company challenges publicly when possible. No company or work environment is perfect. But those that value their employees and their satisfaction are likely to outperform those that don’t. When faced with a problem or challenge, let employees help solve them. They are the ones in the trenches who may have better insight to correct the issue. 8. Give employees the resources they need to do their jobs. Your employees have to have the right tools for the job. Employees — and in turn, customers — don’t want their time wasted because they lack the necessary equipment to perform at their best. 9. Make sure your managers are engaged. If they are not, they will not engage others. Conversely, their enthusiasm will help to motivate others to perform at their best. Just as with rank-and-file employees, listen to your managers’ input and give them regular feedback (both good and bad) to let them know that you care and want to help them succeed. 10. Provide all employees regular feedback about their job performance. No one likes to work in a vacuum. People know when they perform well, so acknowledge it. When they need criticism, be sure to give it quickly but constructively. Let them know what needs to change and be willing to help them. A quarterly or annual review serves little purpose other than to keep your employees in the dark. Show them you care with regular feedback.
