BEST PLACES TO WORK IN KENTUCKY 2019
We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of 100 companies who have set the standard for creating positive working environments. As president of the Kentucky Chamber, I am pleased so many Kentucky employers hold such a strong commitment to their employees. I am especially pleased that 62 of the 100 companies named a “Best Places to Work” this year are members of the Kentucky Chamber. From banks, to colleges, to health care facilities and manufactures, from all corners of the state, this year’s list of winners represent a broad cross-section of industries. In order to make Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to not only educate and employ Kentuckians here, but we also must attract those from out of state to want to work here. The Best Places program provides your company with a tool to measure workplace satisfaction each year.

CELEBRATING YEARS Fifteen years ago, 550 attendees from across the Commonwealth gathered at the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa to celebrate the inaugural Best Places to Work in Kentucky winners. That year, 35 companies were ranked between two categories: medium-sized companies of 25-199 employees and large-sized companies of 200 employees or more. This year, nearly 1,300 attendees will gather in Heritage Hall at the Lexington Center to celebrate 100 companies that will be ranked between three categories: small (15-149 employees), medium (150-499), and large (500+). Although the numbers and exposure have grown throughout the 15 years of the program, several things have not changed: Best Companies Group has continued to manage the survey process; the KYSHRM Council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce have continuously partnered on this event; and two of our original winning companies have made the list every single year — Dean Dorton and KORT.
Through the years‌.

How Best Places to Work Helps Employees Find Their Balance
by Cassie Collins, Operations Manager, Business Services, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce
Today’s world is a balancing act. We are constantly balancing our friends, family, health, and work. During the 24 hours we have in a day, we focus on what is the most important to us, and, for many people, one of the most important areas of their lives is their work. In fact, according to a 2018 Harvard Business Review survey, 94% of working professionals indicated they work at least 50 hours per week. The results from surveys such as this have revealed the demands of a full-time job can affect the other areas of an individual’s life. The more time an individual spends working, the less time he or she has to spend with family, volunteering, enjoying personal interests, etc. This idea is referred to as work-life balance.
Work-life balance is defined as the balance of time an individual allocates for work and the time they allocate for other areas of their life (Grant, Adam,
and Sheryl Sandberg. Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy. 2017). Although this teeter-totter of time management between work and one’s personal life can often be difficult to balance , many of the Best Places to Work are now seeing the benefit of helping their employees find their work-life balance in order to promote positive mental health, employee productivity, and a positive workplace culture. Work-life balance can be promoted in different ways, and different work environments can choose how to best promote work-life balance to their employees. For instance, Best Places to Work companies with employees who are able to get their job done outside of the office via a company software system, phone, and email often allow their employees the

opportunity to work remotely if necessary. In fact, 60% of the businesses that made this year’s Best Places to Work list offer telecommuting options as a standard practice of business. As one employer
“flexibility is offered through a variety of means including working remotely…all in an effort to provide greater balance and less stress for our employees.” In other industries, such as wrote:
health care settings, where an individual is only able to perform their job on site, Best Places to Work promote work-life balance through ample paid time off (PTO) and sick leave. One local medical center offers lucrative PTO according to years of service and also allows employees to cash in their PTO or transfer to others who may be in need. Another medical center offers sick leave employees are allowed to use when they themselves or any other immediate member of their family are ill. This creates a more focused work environment because when they are at work “employees are able to focus on the job at hand rather than worrying about a sick loved one.” More recently, companies have been promoting work-life balance by encouraging their employees to give back to their communities by volunteering their time to an organization or cause they are passionate about. In this year’s survey, 68% of Best Places to Work
companies noted they allow for additional paid time off for community service and volunteer work. One local investment company explained that
“volunteerism is fundamental to our culture, and associates love the chance to give back…volunteerism during the workday is common and expected.” It is their hope employees feel positive about the time they have spent helping others and are recharged for the next work day.
In today’s workforce, work-life balance is essential.
“Flexibility is vital to today’s workforce, not just a perk.” As one winner said,
Employees who feel they are supported by their company in their search for work-life balance often outperform employees who feel over-worked and burned out, so it is in the best interest of both employers and employees to work together to ensure a successful balance between work and personal life.

Kentucky Chamber Workforce is Building Kentucky’s Talent Pipeline The Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center congratulates the winners of the 2019 Best Places to Work competition. The work was hard and the hours were long. But, in the end, you’ve earned the highly sought-after designation as one of the best employers in the Commonwealth. This program is highly competitive and speaks volumes to your leadership, exceptional standards, and innovation in engaging your employees. Finding and retaining qualified talent continues to be one of the greatest obstacles facing businesses today. A recent study conducted by the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management found that 81% of businesses are expecting to grow over the next three to five years. At the same time, 84% of employers struggle to find qualified candidates today. Without the right people in the right jobs, growth will continue to be a challenge. In the same spirit as the Best Places to Work Award, employer leadership and innovation are crucial to addressing the workforce struggles enervating our economy.

To address these challenges, the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center is changing the roadmap regarding an employer’s role in workforce development through a new initiative and tool known as Talent Pipeline Management (TPM). Utilizing supply chain
management principles, TPM empowers employers to engage meaningfully with educators and stakeholders to build talent supply chains by improving the way employees are recruited, trained, and employed. Here’s how it works:
STRATEGY 1: ORGANIZE EMPLOYER COLLABORATIVES Employers agreeing to work together to solve shared talent pain points and address collective workforce challenges
STRATEGY 2: ENGAGE IN DEMAND PLANNING Employers conducting real-time demand projections of targeted critical jobs
STRATEGY 3: COMMUNICATE COMPETENCY AND CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS Employers qualifying and prioritizing skills, credentials, and competencies vital for critical jobs
46
BEST PLACES TO WORK IN KENTUCKY 2019
81%
of employers projected moderate to high growth for their organizations in the next three to five years.
STRATEGY 4: ANALYZE TALENT FLOWS Employers identifying greatest sources of talent, evaluating educator/training provider capacity, and building asset maps
STRATEGY 5: IMPLEMENT PERFORMANCE MEASURES AND ALIGN INCENTIVES Employers determining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for collaborative success and aligning incentives to create/manage talent
STRATEGY 6: CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Using KPIs to regularly measure talent pipeline performance and employer ROI
By July 2020, the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center, in partnership with the Kentucky Cabinet for Education and Workforce Development, will be working to convene at least 25 employer-led collaboratives in Kentucky’s key sectors: Manufacturing, Health Care, Construction, Transportation/ Logistics, and Business Services/Technology. With support from the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center, this work is led by 39 local community leaders and champions of TPM across the state who were trained in a 3-part academy. Here are just a few examples of how TPM is transforming Kentucky’s workforce: Health Care leaders collaborating to build the registered nurse pipeline in Louisville: In partnership with KentuckianaWorks, the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center is using TPM to empower Health Care leaders to build an employer-led talent pipeline for registered nurses in Louisville. Through the demand planning process, the collaborative found that Louisville needs approximately 3,790 RNs over the next two years—nearly 500 more than the state projects over the next five years (with only five employers participating). The collaborative is now growing in order to send stronger signals and drive better partnerships with education and workforce partners. Construction leaders convening to solve commercial electrician shortage: Construction companies in central Kentucky determined that approximately 273 commercial electricians would be needed over the next two years with the best sources of talent historically coming directly from high schools. Armed with data and strategy developed through the TPM process, industry leaders identified a preferred education partner that has consistently provided quality candidates and are now working at the local and district level to recruit more students to the electrician pathway while ensuring that curriculum, competencies, and credentials are aligned to industry needs. For more information about Talent Pipeline Management and how your company can get involved, visit kychamberworkforce.com and join our network to receive regular updates. The Differentiator What Makes a Best Place to Work? Each year, we hear from employers across the Commonwealth who want to know more about the data collected through the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program. And so, we are breaking it down for you here. The employee survey questions are divided into eight different categories. When the surveys are submitted and the responses compiled, we analyze what percentage of those surveyed respond positively to the questions within each category and determine which ones are from employees whose companies made the list versus those who did not. The chart below ranks the eight categories in order of the highest differentiator between employers on the list versus those not on the list. For example, on average, the leadership and planning questions were responded to positively by only 76% of the non-winning companies versus 89% of the winning companies. This 13% difference indicates that leadership and planning is a significant differentiator between the two lists.
