BOARD OF TRUSTEES & STAFF
Gus Lising on Pastor Dave Darwin and Discipleship
I’ve known Dave for… too long, probably! Seriously, I’ve known him for more or less two decades. He was pastoring the 5 p.m. Medecor Service way back when I first met him. What drew me most to Dave was his transparency and vulnerability. That to me is very crucial in someone who calls himself a discipler, or someone who leads people to Jesus. Of course! Vulnerability is what draws us to God and to each other.
THROUGH HIS BROTHERHOOD, DAVE HELPED DISCIPLE ME
Jesus himself led by this example. He was vulnerable to his disciples. When you think about it, how can I be drawn to God if my discipler doesn’t even show his need for Him! While there are so many tools available to aid the discipleship process, it is vulnerability that inspires our hearts to trust and follow the God we discover with our minds.
PASTOR'S NOTE
3
WHILE THERE ARE SO MANY TOOLS (FOR DISCIPLESHIP) IT IS VULNERABILITY THAT INSPIRES OUR HEARTS TO TRUST AND FOLLOW (GOD)
Not that Dave lacks discipleship tools. As a matter of fact, as most of us know, another one of his greatest strengths is communicating God’s word effectively. Add that to his passion for relating to people in a way that helps them become closer to God. You see, just by being himself, seeing the genuineness of God through his life, using the passion and abilities God put in his heart, he effectively leads people to a growing relationship with Jesus, and helps others fall in love with God more.
If Wordcomm really wants to pursue making stronger, better, more responsible disciples rooted in faith and ready to make disciples themselves, Dave Darwin will surely be a valuable asset in this push. I for one know that, in his own way, through his brotherhood, Dave helped disciple me.

Pastor's note
Intimacy ENOUGH OF “CHRISTIANITY AS USUAL.” Take a serious look – not just a glimpse– into this “Jesus guy” they all talk about. Let’s look at some of the people who saw Jesus. What did they see in Him that made them follow Him? And what can we do to be discipled by him? For some of us, it’s time to focus on intimacy through being more disciplined in our spiritual practices. It’s time to come be with Him before you go into the world each day. For some of us, it’s time to commit to community, to a Life Group. How will deepening our relationship with others affect our relationship with the King of Kings? Is there anything we have to sacrifice in order to have more of Jesus? It’s time to pick up the cross. It’s time to come and follow. For some of us, it’s time to understand what it means to be Christ’s follower, to be led by the spirit, especially during these times as we await his return. Listen to His heart. Where is He sending you? To whom shall you go and bring His word? In whichever season you may be, the call is to not remain in autopilot. It’s time to shift gears.

Discipleship makes CAROL HALILI on going from being discipled to being a discipler
If you follow Jesus, you’re called to keep going deeper in your spirituality or risk missing out on something wonderful. Many do. But not Carol Halili. “Life could not have been more fulfilling,” she says. CO NTAC T_ Has the Lord spoken to you about joining a life group, or at least to sit in one? “I realized that there was more to [being a Christ Follower) than just being a Sunday worshiper. I questioned myself, where do I go from here? It was time for me to mature.”
Community
Eventually, all followers are called to be leaders. It is part of the discipleship journey. While following does allow us to develop our relationship with Jesus, leading challenges us to walk with others and take a bigger role in their growth. The call can be as simple as feeling the urge to meet regularly with one person. Or, it can be to lead a life group.
CBSI.” Leading a life group also provided the fellowship that discipleship needs to progress. “I saw what I was missing all this time.”
For Carol, the call came from the urging of a friend. “I didn’t see the need until Leah Darwin pursued me and challenged me to take the responsibility of being a Small Group Leader in
Taking the leap to leadership is not without its challenges. It can be hard to stay committed. It can be trying to continue to grow and be discipled even as you’re discipling others.
Life Groups

“When you agree to be discipled, you want to be intimate with God and you desire to learn, you desire His Wisdom. So one should also have a teachable heart.” The most joyful part, on the other hand, is the impact that you can make in the life of another person. “You feel blessed,” Carol shares, “because somehow, you were instrumental in her spiritual growth.”
LEADING CHALLENGES US TO WALK WITH OTHERS AND TAKE A BIGGER ROLE IN THEIR GROWTH
Carol feels this even more strongly as she remembers a friend in her life group who died, who she’d helped lead closer to Jesus. “I didn’t know that I played a big part in her walk with God,” says Carol. “When she was still alive, I had a chance to love her, care for her and encourage her. It was a joy to be part of someone’s life!”
