OUR COMMUNITY VISION
Academic Distinction
Development and Education
Fellowship
Service and Community Engagement
All fraternities & sororities understand their members are students first. Our chapters challenge their members to exceed academically. Academic excellence is supported through incentive programs, study halls, professor dinners, and study skill workshops.
Serving our community is a touchstone of Greek Life at the University of Oklahoma. Whether raising funds, contributing service hours, or both, our chapters each give back in a unique way.
Our chapters provide personal and leadership development for their members in many ways. We expect our students to leave their chapters as better versions of themselves, and the developmental and educational opportunities provided help that cause.
Fellowship between members and organizations is a characteristic of our community we highly value. These connections impact students and help make a large campus feel like home.

FRATERNITY AND SORORITY Student Life
Thank you for your interest in Fraternity & Sorority Student Life at the University of Oklahoma. We proudly serve students by providing leadership and personal development opportunities throughout the year. Getting involved provides an enhanced membership experience in your collegiate years. Some of our signature programs...
Emerging Leaders
Educational Sessions
Safebreak
Adopt - A - Prof
Greek Community Forum
Greek Awards
Emerging Leaders focuses on developing the newest members of fraternities and sororities. This program cultivates leadership characteristics, allows members to network with campus and community leaders, and establishes a peer support system.
Safebreak is an annual pre-Spring Break event held in honor of Lisa Weider, a former Panhellenic woman who passed away tragically while on spring break in 2004. The event promotes safety during spring break activities for all Greek students.
The Greek Community Forum is a unique program in which five to seven of OU’s most outstanding faculty converge on the Greek community for an evening of intellectual stimulation and casual interaction. Because relationships with faculty are critical for student development, this program fills an important role in the programming calendar. All councils participate together at jointly-hosted spaces.
All new members of fraternities & sororities on campus must attend educational sessions on the topics of hazing prevention, alcohol education, and sexual assault awareness. These sessions equip our newest members to care for themselves and their fellow members as active bystanders.
The Adopt-a-Prof program was launched in 1999 by President Boren in an effort to increase student and faculty interaction outside of the classroom. Each participating faculty member is matched with a student group and asked to connect and participate with members of that group in various events throughout the year.
Our office proudly honors students and Greek letter organizations each year through our awards program. Awards for excellence are presented in the areas of academic achievement, community and campus engagement, leadership and member development, recruitment and education of new members, and more. Additionally, outstanding recruitment guides, alumni members, house directors, and organization advisors are honored annually.

FAMILY GUIDE This guide is to be as much of a resource to students interested in the fraternity and sorority community as it is to parents and guardians. We hope the following pages will help answer questions you may have and provide useful information to your families when making the decision to join a fraternity or sorority. The fraternity and sorority experience can provide growth, academic support, peer mentorship and education, and close contact with university administrators. Our organizations value tradition and many have mottos by which their members live by. All of our sororities and fraternities were founded on a set of values, ethics, and standards their members strive to uphold.
Frequently Asked Questions What is Recruitment? Intake? Recruitment and intake are names for the process by which fraternities and sororities recruit new members. These processes differ from council to council but all must be in compliance with organizational, institutional, and state policies and procedures. When do students join these organizations? We are happy to be an institution that offers a fraternity and sorority experience to students regardless of their credit-hour standing. A large majority of our students join chapters their first semester in college, but some organizations do require a college GPA prior to joining. What are benefits of joining? Joining a fraternity or sorority can have many benefits to students. Students in our system are more likely to have higher grades due to academic support and peer mentorship; students also gain personal and professional development opportunities, a group of friends with which to share their college experience, and a variety of leadership and educational resources. What does it mean to be a new member? A new member period is a special time for students to bond with other new members and older members as well. In this time, they learn about the organization’s history and goals, and this time ends in initiation into the organization.

Family Tips Be supportive of your student’s choice to join a fraternity or sorority - a student does not have to be a legacy in order to join, and this might be a new experience for your whole family. Take some time and learn about the organization your student is looking to join. You can find this information and helpful links at our website, www.greek.ou.edu. Understand the financial responsibility that comes with the fraternity and sorority experience. You can find council-specific financial information on our website or by reaching out to council advisors. Encourage your student to get involved within his or her chapter. There are a plethora of opportunities for you as parents to get involved, too. Ask questions. The Office of Student Life is happy to help answer any questions you or your student may have about the fraternity and sorority experience, recruitment processes, etc. You can find our contact information online at www.greek.ou.edu.
