THE PHILIPPINES The Philippine economy continues to be one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and is showing no sign of slowing down. Its stellar economic rally in the first quarter of 2013 soared to a groundbreaking 7.8% growth boosted by its robust performance in 2012 that tallied 6.6% growth earning the confidence of foreign investors as well as top international organizations.
Accorded investment grade status by credit rating firms, Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCRA), Fitch Ratings, and Standard & Poor’s, the Philippines expects to welcome a boost in capital inflows in the coming years.
Its population of almost 100 million Filipinos is driven by a large and young consumer market base, and an expanding middle-class with relatively high disposable income.
Blessed with vast natural resources and spectacular tourist destinations, the country is known for its popular beach paradise Boracay, named as the World’s Best Island” in 2012 by U.S. based Travel + Leisure Magazine. The New York Times also listed the Philippines as number 17 in its “The 46 Places to Go in 2013,” with special mention of its tourist destinations - Boracay, El Nido and Siargao.
With strong growth in tourism arrivals, the Philippines will need an estimated 37,000 more hotel rooms in tourism hotspots by 2016. Aggressive tourism development is likewise projected to give rise to the US$16 billion upcoming Entertainment City, a Las Vegas style casino and tourism complex in Manila Bay which will be the Philippines’ biggest infrastructure project in history.
Upbeat economic conditions, a vibrant and liberalized retail landscape fueled by increased purchasing power, and a booming tourism industry make the Philippines an ideal destination for trade, business, and investments.

at the hotel show In meeting its 10.0 percent growth target for 2013, the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) intensifies its promotion of Philippine products through its participation in overseas trade shows like The Hotel Show, one of the world’s most important events in the hospitality, hotel, and tourism industry. Slated on 28-30 September, 2013 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Philippine participation in The Hotel Show is a strategic platform to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s promising hospitality industry. The MENA region’s forecasted global worth in terms of business tourism is valued at US$44.8 billion by 2022. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hotel and tourism sector is also expected to grow to US$7.5 billion by 2016. According to London-based hotel industry research company STR Global, 11 hotels were opened in the MENA region in 2013 alone. Another 133 hotels will be opening later this year, while 141 hotels are expected to be in operation by 2014. In a report released by DTI, notable export growth in 2012 was observed in the woodcraft and furniture sectors of the Philippines, with export sales amounting to US$2.34 billion. These figures exhibited a 26.6 percent increase compared to the US$1.85 billion sales in 2011. The Philippine Export Development Plan (PEDP) reports that furniture and furnishings is one of the sectors with the highest potential in increasing the country’s export performance. Spearheaded by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), DTI’s export promotions arm, the Philippine participation at The Hotel Show consists of select Filipino manufacturers of furniture and furnishings that include Catalina Embroideries Inc., Cebu Fil Veneer Corporation, Craft Mill, Inc., Dale Mathis Studio, Inc., Diretso,The Gilded Expressions, Lightworks Resources, Maze Manufacturing Co. Inc., More Than A Chair, Inc., and Padua International Corporation. Design Philippines is about looking inwardly as well as outwardly. Inward, from the point of view of nurturing, protecting, and evolving “The Art of the Craftsman” which is the very “Soul of the Philippines”. Outwardly – from a very worldly point of view; a vantage point that has carefully and thoughtfully considered and utilized natural and indigenous materials; a vantage point that has established leadership in the Global Community of Design. In so doing, “Design Philippines as a movement” has taken shape and now speaks with recognized authority in the world of Design.

Gilded Expressions is the workshop of designer and craftswoman Ann Pamintuan. Inspired by nature’s textures and shapes, Pamintuan began with electroplating trimmings from twigs, orchid roots, and vines of curtain plants and made brooches, bangles, pendants, and other accessories out of them. She then moved to creating things for the home, like a wall plate and containers from hand-welded mesh wire.
