The One that stands for change Sustainability is as important to us as it is to you.

80%

Through various projects we expect to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% by 2030. As an eco-conscious university, we care about sustainability. Many of our courses offer modules focused on sustainability and the environment. You can also get involved with the Environmental Society and the Green Ambassador programme through the Students' Union (see page 30). We are installing additional sustainable energy systems on our sites. This includes solar panels and heat pumps at our St John Central accommodation site. We will also be powering the floodlights at our sports facilities using solar energy that is stored in recycled car batteries. 24

5000 We have planted more than 5,000 trees on our sites in the past few years.

YORKSJ.AC.UK

Energy We were the first university in the UK to purchase the majority of our electricity direct from renewable energy generators. Other ways we are improving include: • Ensuring most of our vehicles are electric • Updating heating systems to reduce energy consumption • Introducing LED lighting and triple glazing to all buildings.

Biodiversity We are proud to have a biodiverse campus. We have introduced tansy plants to support the endangered tansy beetle. These are only found around the River Ouse, which flows through York. Our campus also includes: • Habitats for hedgehogs • Bird boxes for kestrels and peregrine falcons • A wildlife pond • Beehives • Community allotments.

Waste management Sustainability does not stop at energy efficiency. • None of our waste has gone to landfill since 2016. The small amount that cannot be recycled is used to generate energy. • All of the green waste from our campus is recycled through composting • Our food waste is used to generate biogas for energy and low carbon fertiliser. 25

When I was choosing where to come to university, it was important to me to find somewhere with a good student support system. I also wanted to join a smaller course with academic staff who know students on a personal basis. York St John offered me both of these things. When I visited I knew it was the place for me. It was in a beautiful, friendly city and both the staff and students all looked happy to be there. Amber | Biomedical Science

RETURNING TO LEARNING By choosing to study later in your career you are making a decision to take on a new challenge and change your life. It’s never too late to change your career, embrace new ideas and reach your full potential. We share your ambition and will do everything we can to help make it happen. While plenty of applicants come to us straight from school or college, many have spent some time in the world of work, gaining valuable skills and knowledge. Around 15% of our student population are mature learners. This diversity of experience is a great asset to our university. There is no need to worry if it is a long time since you have studied, or you feel your academic skills need some improvement. Comprehensive support is available to help you build your confidence so that you feel prepared to take on this new challenge.

When I lost my husband to cancer a few years ago I thought ‘life is short’ and I wanted to pursue a lifelong interest. I am finding it challenging but rewarding studying at 53 years of age. Classroom dynamics are friendly and accepting and I feel very much part of my group. I have been active in the Students’ Union, particularly in forming our Mature Students’ Society. Tracy | Fine Art

36

YORKSJ.AC.UK

How we support you We take various factors into consideration when deciding on the offers we make to applicants. Being a mature student is one of these factors. Our mature entry offer scheme takes into account professional experience, as well as traditional qualifications, and could help you find a place with us. We also support you through our flexible approach to learning. Part time options are available on most of our courses, meaning you can fit study around work, family or other commitments. We offer a tailored induction day for mature learners so that you can meet others who are in the same position as you and get to know the support services available.

You will also have a dedicated contact to signpost you to any extra support you may need and there are events throughout the year for mature students. Our Students’ Union includes a Postgraduate and Mature Students Officer who helps to ensure that your needs are being met. There is also a Mature Students’ Society you can get involved with. Before you apply you are welcome to attend a Mature Learners Information Session. These are a chance to have your questions answered in a relaxed and friendly setting. Find out when these sessions are running and book your place at: yorksj.ac.uk/maturelearners

Access Diplomas If you do not have the qualifications we usually ask for, the next step may be to study for an Access to Higher Education Diploma. Many Further Education Colleges offer this option on a part time basis. The diploma is designed to fit around other commitments, and is aimed at adults looking to return to education. To find an access course near you visit: www.accesstohe.ac.uk

We are proud to be in the
