EDITOR’S OPEN LETTER An introduction from the Editor, where we’ve come from, what to expect, when to expect it.

O

ne day you wake up and realise you’re growing up, there is no seamless transition from child to adult as we imagined as kids, there’s no mystical force that transforms us into men and it is for that reason many of us look for guidance in the early stages of our adulthood. Guidance can come in many forms but more often than not it comes from those who have already experienced what we are experiencing. When we do realise adulthood is upon us, we can either let it consume us or we can rebuke the prospect of ‘getting old’ and instead ‘grow into ourselves.’ Adulthood doesn’t have to mean seriousness and a lack of free time, it can mean sophistication and success. It can mean your interpretation of the way you attend to your business and personal matters as a man in the modern era. It can mean the way you dress, think, act, purchase and affiliate but all are things we at Youngent are passionate about. Aspiration costs nothing and goals are heavily rewarding when they appear to be obtainable. It has already been proven many times that people who set realistic goals for themselves are more likely to succeed and at Youngent we made it our goal to construct a platform by which affluential young males can spread ideas and own their culture

instead of relying on publications aimed at those aged 26 and over. The constraints on young men today are massive, we are expected to perform better than ever in unforgiving environments be it work or University but scarcely do we take the time to appreciate the finer things that we are all working towards. Youngent staff writers are young males writing for young males, they are experiencing adulthood at the same time as you and are keen to share ways in which we might approach adulthood smoothly and explore ways in which we can develop as young men. This publication promises to provide efficacious young men with a rest-bite of entertaining and informative content, we give you permission to take five minutes to appreciate the very best in everything related to successful young male culture.

6 WAYS TO PREVENT OFFICE BELLY No hassle, no overcommitments, no unrealistic promises, no bullshit. Avoid the “christ, you’ve put on some timber” coversation with these six effortless lifestyle changes.

M

ost are guilty of indulging in food a little too much and the increasingly demanding schedules of men has made it easier to indulge. If you’re honest with yourselves you have failed more than once in your bid to lead a more holistic life after promising that this year you’ll clean up your diet but reality always catches up. The fact is humans are all imperfect, vices remind us that life isn’t all that bad and it should be encouraged to a degree. However, in a world that is ruled by speed and reliability, convenience is king and sometimes it can be our downfall in spite of our efforts to moderate what goes into our mouths (pun probably intended.) The vulnerability of office workers can be seen across the United Kingdom as obesity and diabetes runs ragged, without sounding like a scare monger we are in fact slowly eating ourselves to death and whilst to some this isn’t alarming and isn’t old news; to others it is a realisation that there must be a change if they are to avoid the infamous office belly. Those behind a desk regularly compensate a fast paced lifestyle with poor eating habits and although we see success in other walks of life both financially, academically and romantically our relationship with our body suffers. No one wants to be that guy that get’s told they’ve put on weight over the past few years, no amount of money you throw at that person would make them take it back or change the fact that you’ve put on three stone. However, not everyone has the time, energy or motivation levels required to head to a gym five days a week, nor does everyone have the mental capacity to avoid post-work beers but the following methods are both simple and realistic ways in which you can take control over your calorie intake and still enjoy life’s little luxuries.

Poor preparation encourages poor performance. Most of us are aware of what foods benefit us, even to a very basic standard and if we prepare those foods before we leave the house we are eliminating the possibility of us having to resort to quick alternatives. Our advice is to invest in some tupperware and ensure either the night before or the morning of your food is prepared for the entire day. Getting into this habit is the foundation of positive eating habits and can save money long-term. The biggest mistake people make in a productive environment is using drinks to counteract either a lack of sleep or lack of quality food intake. High-sugar drinks contribute to weight gain and diabetes, two of the biggest killers in the UK to date. There are many zero calorie alternatives to our favourite brands on the market, particularly carbonated drinks and can be used to keep high-sugar drinks off our desks. Whilst zero calorie drinks are good alternatives, the power of water should not be ignored and should be the predominant drink in our hands. Like food, having water on your person at all times is a simple way to ensure you aren’t tempted by the convenience of anything else.

Calorie counting isn’t fun and it wasn’t easy when it had to be done manually but thanks to the wonder of smart phones we have been gifted calorie counting apps. MyFitnessPal is an app that lets you search a database for both branded and generic foods, the database is constructed and moderated by an active community so its range is global including restaurant and supermarket foods. High intensity jogging or running sessions and expensive gym memberships are enough to put even the most strong willed man off ever trying to lead a healthier lifestyle. In truth, none of those things are needed to cut your calorie intake and it’s a common misconception that you need to exercise for hours on end to burn off last nights Five Guys. In fact, walking at a relatively moderate pace for 30-45 minutes before breakfast is one of the most effective ways of losing weight and can be incorporated into almost anyone’s daily routine provided they’re half decent at time managing.

5

At the same time, it’s important to always make time for a quality breakfast to kickstart your metabolism for the day. We recommend Flavahan’s Irish Organic Oats

6

Instead of watching that last episode on netflix and sacrificing another hour of sleep, we recommend hitting the sack. Getting eight hours sleep a night is the most effective way of replenishing energy levels and recovering from the strain of the day before. Whilst most people replace a lack of sleep with poor choice foods that negatively effective our cognitive and physical performance, the few who

adhere to 7-8 hours sleep a night excel in the workplace and lead healthier lifestyles.

THE MVMT THAT COULD BE THE ANSWER TO YOUR TIME PIECE PROBLEMS If you’re inbetween watches or just fancy adding to your collection this is the answer. V Watches are an important part of a man’s wardrobe and can be the difference between him being taken seriously or not. A watch is a statement, it says ‘I take timekeeping this seriously’ and different watches will always exhibit more about a man’s character than his body language ever could. The problem for most lies in the pricing of quality and sophisticated time pieces with an Omega Seamaster setting you back around four thousand pounds. Saving for a luxury time piece should definitely be in the back of ones mind but in the mean time there are little to few options to fill the space on the wrist where your first luxury watch should sit. MVMT, pronounced “movement”, have quickly emerged as a company that might provide young men with a time piece they can be proud of whilst they make the necessary financial arrangements to purchase a higher end time piece.

MVMT was a crowdfunded start up company that found life in Indiegogo, a platform that encourages it’s users to share ideas with a community in a bid to raise money and start a campaign. MVMT stated that their intention was to start a time piece company that beat their competitors in an unusually humble manner, with quality materials, minimalistic and sophisticated looks that can be used in a casual or professional environment and at a fraction of the cost. Not only did MVMT raise the necessary amount of money required to get their feet off of the ground but they did so in style after becoming Indiegogo’s second highest fashion start up ever. MVMT have stayed true to their word and their company ethos is explained all over their website as well as being evident in all of their products.

YOUNGENT The watches themselves are constructed with genuine leather where applicable and are water resistant up to three atmospheres. They have a clean minimalistic design that can be used in almost any environment, meaning there isn’t really a need to purchase more than one. They are fairly substantial being 10mm thick with a 45mm case whilst adhering to it’s subtle nature and are noticeably weighty. MVMT utilise a Japanese quartz movement, renowned for it’s reliability in time keeping.

MVMT began their first collection with six different watches and now boast thirteen after over a year of production and show no signs of stopping there after receiving positive critical reception from various companies including HypeBeast. We believe that MVMT is a brand that all young men should support, not only because it’s run by young entrepreneurs

and men similar to ourselves, but because the products on offer are genuinely quality pieces that have been endorsed by thousands to date. In the UK prices range from £62.63 for a black/black leather time piece and £75.82 for a black/gold metal bracelet watch.

LOOK TO HOLLYWOOD Which four men over the past fifty years exemplified what style should be and why they should be a bigger influence on us than they already are.

Having the ability to piece together items of clothing that not only fit a purpose but are on trend is not something that is expected to come natural to us, it’s important to remember that everyone would like to possess the natural instincts necessary to create the illusion of effortless style. The truth is everyone has an influence, be it from one source or multiple but we’ve put together four young men you may not have realised are as fashion savvy as they are. James Dean has been a style icon for decades and will continue to be for decades to come, this is attributed to his easily interpretable and simple items of clothing. Adopting a ‘keep it simple’ philosophy can seldom fail but do not mistake simple for cheap, don’t be afraid to pay for quality should the opportunity present itself. James Dean’s “live fast, die young” attitude is something seen in his effortless approach to dressing, sometimes a leather jacket over a plain white tee says more about a character than anything else could. Kit Harington seemingly appeared out of nowhere with his role in Game of Thrones but has gone on to impress the masses both in regards to acting and his slightly rugged style. His dedication to visually fitting a role goes as far as him not shampooing for six weeks to look more disheveled and whilst his everyday style may not be as extreme as this, he still knows how to dress accordingly. Harington leans towards a high-end pair of jeans and a plain tee with brogues or Converse to suit. Shia LaBeouf has only recently been considered someone one might look towards for inspiration and has done a lot of growing over recent years but his journey from Even Stevens to more recently Fury, has encouraged him to push boundaries and not be afraid to break the mould. His increase in stature and status has led some to believe Kanye West models his own wardrobe on LaBeouf ’s which is subject to belief. Whatever the case, LaBeouf is the perfect example of what growing into manhood should be as he balances casual streetwear and a suit that could stop traffic. Daniel Radcliffe is someone most of us grew up alongside, all except for Daniel of course. We have seen his prepubescent self become the man he is today and not all of us appreciate that. Radcliffe’s approach to clothing is intriguing, he keeps things simple but sophisticated and let’s his character do the talking. Radcliffe can be seen usually donning stubble with shirts, which always has been a staple of his wardrobe and he is also not a stranger to the fisherman

Press Release: Youngent have released their first issue of their online magazine and have announced it’s initial success as a result of it being free to download for a limited time and receiving a positive reception. The online publication, aimed at young affluent males received a positive critical reception from it’s audience following an opening launch night. With the rapid growth of digital journalism not showing signs of faltering Youngent enters the market at the perfect time. They claim to be already on track to compete with the likes of GQ and Esquire in their respective field as figures show more than a quarter of their 1825 year old readers read the opening issue. Affluent young men everywhere between the age of 18-25 have been resigned to consuming culture that isn’t tailored for themselves and thus have been neglected until now. Youngent aims to provide this demographic with quality assured content tailored for them, by them delivered in an enriching and entertaining fashion. The editor, Ryan Harvey, states “it’s quite easy to name the publications directed towards lower-class males between the ages of 18-25 and affluent established adults between the ages of 26-55.” “We at Youngent wanted to create something for those in the middle, slightly out of the lads mag range but also feel bemused at some publications aimed at the more established affluent male. Our publication represents a journey one might take to develop as a young man and take interest in various things associated with affluence.” “From style to culture, from tech to women, we aim to provide young affluent males a platform they feel a part of and a community of like-mindedness.” Youngent is available to download immediately from their website free of charge, subscription fee thereafter is £4.99 per month with issues published fortnightly.
