D.C. Rally Shows Support For Struggling Democrats BY PHILIP ELLIOTT AP WRITER WASHINGTON (AP) — Tapping into anger as the tea party movement has done, a coalition of progressive and civil rights groups marched by the thousands Saturday on the Lincoln Memorial and pledged to support Democrats struggling to keep power on Capitol Hill.

the four-hour program of speeches and entertainment energizes activists who are crucial if Democrats are to retain their majorities in the House and Senate. The national mood suggests gains for the GOP, and Republicans are hoping to ride voter anger to gain control of the House and possibly the Senate. “We are together. This march is about the power to the people,” said Ed Schultz, host of “The Ed Show” on MSNBC. “It is about the people standing up to the corporations. Are you ready to fight back?” In a fiery speech that opened the “One Nation Working Together” rally on the National Mall, Schultz blamed Republicans for shipping jobs overseas and curtailing freedoms. He borrowed some of conservative commentator Glenn Beck’s rhetoric and vowed to “take back our country.” “This is a defining moment in America. Are you American?” Schultz told the raucous crowd. “This is no time to back down. This is time to fight for America.” With a month of campaigning to go and voter unhappiness high, the Democratic-leaning organizers hope

environmental and gay rights groups — partnered for the event, which comes one month after Beck packed the same space with conservatives and tea party-style activists. Organizers claimed they had as many participants as Beck’s rally. But Saturday’s crowds were less dense and didn’t reach as far to the edges as they did during Beck’s rally. The National Park Service stopped providing official crowd estimates in the 1990s. AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka urged participants, including his union’s members, to band together. “There is nothing, and I mean nothing, we can’t do when we stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder,” Trumka said. “We will stand together. And we will win together. And we

won’t let anyone — and I mean anyone — stand in our way.” That starts as soon as the crowds get back to their homes. “Coming out of here, we’ve got to go home and ask our friends to vote, ask our neighbors to vote,” NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous said. “Ever forward, never backwards,” he led the crowd in a cheer. But even participants recognized

the challenge. “There may be an enthusiasm gap, but we’re not going to know until we have an election,” said Ken Bork, who came from Camas, Wash. “A lot of the noise from the extreme right-wing stuff, it’s been well orchestrated by big money. But it's not as bad as they're making it out.” Rose Dixon, a health care worker from Pawleys Island, S.C., said she hopes the rally sends a message to

lawmakers on Capitol Hill. “Stop the obstructionism. Work together,” Dixon said. “Stop playing politics as usual and to put the American people first. We’re tired of the politics and the posturing and the games.” The Rev. Al Sharpton, addressing the crowd that swelled through the day, warned activists against apathy. See RALLY, page 4

BRIEFS AEG CEO Still Working On Getting NFL Team to L.A. BY JACOB ADELMAN ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER LOS ANGELES (AP) — The president and CEO of AEG, the company that owns LA Live and Staples Center, said he’s still working on getting an NFL team to downtown Los Angeles. Tim Leiweke spoke Sept. 30 at

a fundraiser for a downtown Los Angeles street car project. “If things were very fortunate, this particular project would open up right when the NFL returns to Los Angeles,” Leiweke said. Leiweke said he’s committed to working with city officials and AEG’s Philip Anschutz to make a downtown stadium a reality. “God willing, if all of that works, we may see a vision one day

L.A. County Withholding List of Highest-Paid Workers LOS ANGELES (AP) — A list of highest-paid Los Angeles County employees is being withheld because some workers are concerned about their safety if salaries are made public. Despite a 2007 state Supreme Court ruling saying public employees have no guarantee of privacy, county officials are keeping the names and salaries secret. Deputy county counsel Nancy Takade says they need more time to comply with public records law to protect workers. The Los Angeles Times asked for the identities and pay of county workers who earn $250,000 or more a year. The request comes in the wake of the salary scandal in Bell where eight current and former city officials face corruption charges. Takade says the requested data, with some employee names redacted, would probably be released next month. County officials are surveying all 100,000 county employees. Special to the NNPA from the AFRO-American Newspapers Staff Though many students across the nation may not like an extra month in the classroom, the extra classroom time would benefit them, President Obama said. “That month makes a difference,” Obama said during a recent appearance on the “Today Show.” “It means that kids are losing a lot of what they learn during the school year during the summer. It’s especially severe for poorer kids who may not see as many books in the house during the summers; (they)

aren’t getting as many educational opportunities.” According to Obama, American students are falling behind some of their international counterparts, particularly in the math and science fields. He added that Chinese, Indian, and other students of fastgrowing countries are already leaving U.S. students in the dust. Currently, U.S. schools offer an average of 180 school days per year, according to data from the Education Commission of the States, in comparison to 196 and 197 days in countries with the highest student achievement levels like Germany, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan.

BY JENNY GROSS AP WRITER JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Africa’s governments are doing a better job of strengthening their economies and helping the private sector grow, but security has deteri-

orated on the continent over the past five years, a former World Bank official said Monday. An annual report by the London-based Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance, which tracks development across the continent, found Angola, Egypt and Liberia were among the countries that made the greatest economic strides. But 35 African countries saw a decline in safety and rule of law according to the Ibrahim Index, which was mainly based on data from last year. Mauritius, Botswana and South Africa were among countries that topped overall governance rankings, while the overall worst performers included Somalia, Zimbabwe and Chad, according to the Index. South Africa, the biggest economy on the continent, scored fifth overall in government performance but ranked 44th of 53 African countries in personal safety. Ramphele said Monday that African governments have improved economically not only because of their countries' commodities and resources, but also because of their commitments to working more with private enterprises. Nigeria privatized more than 116 enterprises between 1999 and 2006, according to an annual report by McKinsey & Company, an international financial consulting company. Additionally, Africa’s flow of foreign direct investment increased to $62 billion in 2008 from $9 billion in 2000, which is almost as large as the flow into China, the McKinsey report said. Earlier this year, the World Bank concluded Africa was rebounding from the global crisis, and poverty was slowly decreasing after “a decade of improvements in governance, favorable commodity prices, better macroeconomic policies, higher investments in human development, health care and education.” To cushion the global financial crisis, the Liberian government proposed tax cuts and a $2 million fund for Liberian entrepreneurs, according to the 2010 African Development Bank report, which showed that Africa’s economies were hit less hard by the international economic crisis than Europe or North America, but should recover just as quickly.

the 2008 vice presidential nominee. Van Jones, who last year was forced from his job as a White House energy adviser after Beck made public his comments disparaging Republicans, said during his remarks that progressives must stand with Democrats to put America back to work. “They don’t need hateful rhetoric. They need real solutions,” Jones said. Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin gathered near the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech to urge a vast crowd to embrace traditional values. Though also billed as nonpolitical, the rally was widely

viewed as a protest against the policies of President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats. One Nation organizers said they began planning their event before learning about Beck’s rally, and said Saturday’s march is not in reaction to that. “Our strength is your strength,” SEIU President Mary Kay Henry led a chant. “We are one nation, coming together.” Obama was spending the weekend at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. However, the largest organizations, such as the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union, tend to back Democratic candidates. Rep. James Clyburn Comes to Town HBCUs Get $850M; is the highest-ranking African American in the Still Underfunded More He U.S. House of Representatives and also the Majority Whip Aid Needed From Federal Government BY CHARLES D. ELLISON SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE PHILADELPHIA TRIBUNE Faced with a sluggish economy and a state budget he once described as “flat during a faculty meeting, Lincoln University President Ivory Nelson is in a bind like most Black college heads: he’s just getting by. And like others in his situation, Nelson is deeply troubled that federal support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) is nominal. “If you look at HBCUs as a whole, we receive 3 percent of the overall college population, notes Nelson, a Grambling University graduate in his 11th year as Lincoln’s president. “But, we graduate 25 percent of all African Americans receiving a college degree. You don’t want to lose that 25 percent — in fact, you want to increase it. Addressing those concerns, the

Obama administration recently rolled out its White House HBCU Initiative in a bit of fanfare during Congressional Black Caucus week, a follow-up to Executive Order 13532 signed in February that directs $850 million to HBCUs during the next 10 years. Overall, the spending has been viewed as a boost, with the President committing $100 million more than in previous years. White House HBCU Initiative Executive Director John S. Wilson Jr. is optimistic, describing the effort as “more empowered when comparing it to previous administrations since then-President Jimmy Carter launched the program by Executive Order in 1980. Wilson sees a holistic approach taking form. “Out of the $120 billion in higher-education funding, 4 percent of that is going to HBCUs, argues Wilson, when asked what makes the See HBCU, page 9

BY BRANDON BROOKS CO-MANAGING EDITOR The Honorable James E. Clyburn (D-SC-6) will be visiting Los Angeles this weekend and he is scheduled to meet with the AfricanAmerican press to talk about federal issues of job growth, health care and financial reform, and an array of other issues that are relevant to the African-American community. One of the primary purposes of his trip is to help the community understand the importance of keeping the Democratic majority in Congress so that they can continue to support President Obama’s vision for the country. Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass will be hosting Clyburn in a day of activities in Southern California and one of her priorities is to allow him to receive first-hand information on the public policy issues affecting our African-American community. This will also be a rare opportunity to have a first-hand discussion with the majority whip of the House of Representatives, particularly on the profound affect that the issues in Washington, D.C., have on the African-American community.

The Honorable James Clyburn Speaker Emeritus Bass said, “Mr. Clyburn is the second most powerful African-American man in the United States (the first being President Obama) and I along with the other members of the CBC in L.A. wanted to essentially to introduce him to African American L.A. ‌ South Los Angeles. ‌ He will be meeting with the community press; then we’ll have a fundraiser for him; and then he’ll be attending the New

Frontier’s 50th anniversary dinner. Danny J. Bakewell Sr. said, “James Clyburn is a tireless advocate for all Americans and is always trumpeting the value of the Black press. We welcome him to L.A. Clyburn will be the guest of Bass and Dr. Anthony Samad of the Urban Issues Forum at a community forum on Oct. 9, 10:30 a.m., at F.A.M.E. Renaissance, 1968 W. Black Leaders Say New Education Regulations Will Harm Minorities SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE AFRO-AMERICAN NEWSPAPER STAFF

The Rev. Jesse Jackson

The U.S. Department of Education plans to enact new rules targeting the financial aid eligibility of programs at for-profit career institutions, regulations, which they said, are part of an “effort to protect students from aggressive or misleading recruiting practices.” However, some Black business and political leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition; famed trial attorney Willie Gary; Randal Pinkett, chairman and CEO of BCT Partners; and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, said the regulations are unfair. Under the department’s planned “Gainful Employment” regulations, institutions of higher education and post-secondary vocational schools would have to disclose graduation and job placement rates, along with debt levels and incomes of their graduates to prospective students and the department. Additionally, institutions would

also have to provide a five-year projection of enrollment, documentation from employers stating that the institution’s programs meet their business needs, projected job vacancies and job requirements before the program can become eligible to participate in federal student aid. Milton Anderson, president of Virginia College’s branch in Jackson, Miss., and a spokesman for the Coalition for Education Success, which opposes the proposed regulations, said that 1.2 million students enrolled at career schools are minorities. “I am concerned that the proposed rule casts too broad and too general a brush on many institutions, some of whom are doing an excellent job at serving economically disadvantaged and minority students,” wrote Jackson, in a letter to Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Sept. 15. Gary voiced his concerns in a newspaper op-ed. “The proposed regulations are aimed at institutions whose graduates don’t often become CEOs, doctors and

lawyers. Career schools produce nurses, auto mechanics, computer technicians and other skilled workers, whose services are often overlooked and devalued in our society.” In response to the objections and concerns raised, the department said in a statement that it would delay publication of the new rules to take “additional time to consider the comments we received and to host several meetings and public hearings in the coming weeks.” The new regulations were scheduled to go into effect on Nov. 1. “Let me be clear: We’re moving forward on gainful employment regulations,” Duncan said in a statement. “While a majority of career colleges play a vital role in training our workforce to be globally competitive, some bad actors are saddling students with debt they cannot afford in exchange for degrees and certificates they cannot use.” The department expects the regulations to now take effect in the summer of 2012.

(Left to right) Alcorn State University president George E. Ross; John S. Wilson Jr., executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); and CIA Director Leon Panetta attend a conference for HBCU, as Rear Adm. Nevin Carr Jr. speaks to a crowd. Overall, the $850 million in funding for HBCUs is viewed as a boost, The Continued from page 7 current President’s initiative different. Yet, funding parity becomes a major issue when talking with HBCU supporters who describe a lack of federal funding to Black schools for research and development grants, a pot of gold for institutions seeking to enhance prestige and attract additional funding. “There is a gap when the betterfunded White institutions get the larger piece of the pie for R&D,” observes one White House Initiative board member speaking anonymously. And critics express concern that community colleges, two-year institutions serving a large share of minority students, are getting federal dollars that could be shifted to full-degree, four-year HBCUs. Nelson cited HBCU competition with community colleges as an “issue.” Wilson contends the money is there. “There’s too much money to say we’ve got money flowing away from HBCUs,” Wilson says. “We have a more informed and sensitive perspective when it comes to HBCUs and we are better resourced. Of the $40 billion in Pell Grants, a disproportionate share goes to HBCU students.” Cheyney University President Michelle Howard-Vital also appears upbeat. “I think we have a renewed opportunity with this President to state the case for HBCUs,” says Howard-Vital. Other HBCU presidents like Nelson are also encouraged, but there is hesitation. “$850 million is a good start, but it’s not enough. It is over 10 years, spread out over many different schools.” And, it remains unclear how much members of Congress are helping to marshal resources for HBCUs in their states and districts. Democrats are generally supportive of HBCU efforts, particularly when pushed by a unified effort from the Congressional Black Caucus, which Wilson says works closely with his office. But, there is the usual pushback from Republicans who argue HBCU funding is “affirmative action” straining an already tight federal budget. Pennsylvania-delegation Members such as Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.), whose 7th District houses Cheyney, were difficult to reach for comment.

Yet, Howard-Vital heaps praise on Sestak for finding nearly $2 million in federal funding for science programs and scholarships. But, there is concern that Sen. Robert Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) has yet to visit Cheney or Lincoln’s campus. “Senator Specter has been here on several occasions,” says HowardVital of Cheyney. “Sen. Casey’s chief of staff has been here. But, I would like more interface with him.” Casey’s office claims the senator has been instrumental in securing federal dollars for HBCUs, including $255 million annually supporting “minority-serving” institutions. “Senator Casey met with Dr. Howard-Vital when she was in D.C. this summer,” notes Casey press secretary Stephanie Zarecky. “Senator Casey’s office also worked closely with Cheyney (for) the hearing he chaired on college affordability at

Philadelphia Tribune reports. Wilson described the effort as “more empowered” when comparing it to previous presidential administrations, according to the Tribune. Temple University last year.” Marybeth Gasman, an associate professor of Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania and a national expert on HBCUs, sees a much more “centralized” effort under the Obama administration. “The current HBCU Initiative is much better organized,” says Glasman. “Obama realized that the initiative was not as centralized as it could be and so he asked the current director to pool the resources of all of the agencies — basically making them more accessible to HBCUs.” Still, the funding stream could be more robust, argues Glasman. “It’s a start, but I think more could be done. HBCUs have long been underfunded at every level. Critics say that HBCUs are inferior, but they never discuss the unequal support at all levels that has existed from their inception through the current day.”

Health Care Law –

What’s in it for Small Businesses? In California, small businesses, or businesses that employ less than 100 people, make up over 90% over all private sector employers, employ over 5 million Californians, and paid over a third of the state’s private sector payrolls. Nationally, small businesses employ over 50 percent of all private sector workers in the US and have generated two thirds of the new jobs in our economy during the recession. What is the new health care reform law doing to help this critical sector of our economy? Robert Phillips of The California Endowment and Sara Collins of the Commonwealth Fund, both private foundation headquartered in California and New York respectively who focus on health policy answers concerns raised by small business owners in California.

I own a sandwich shop in San Francisco with five full-time employees. Will the new health care law require me to provide them insurance? If it does, I may be forced to shut down – Son ka Wu, Vietnamese entrepreneur Answer: The new law doesn’t make it mandatory for small businesses with 50 employees or fewer to provide coverage.

I run BBQ business in Orange County with 13 full-time employees. My insurance cost has risen from 5 to 6 percent of my overall expenses to more than 12 percent, in the past four years. Soon I’ll have to opt out of providing health insurance. Can’t the new law help me lower my health insurance costs? – Liz Parker. Answer: Two provisions help reduce premiums. First, if you have fewer than 25 employees who earn an average wage below $50,000 per annum you are eligible for a tax credit of up to 35 per cent of the amount you contribute for employees’ premiums, for taxes filed for 2010 to 2013. From 2014 to 2016, the tax credits will increase to cover up to 50 percent of the employer's premium contribution for eligible small businesses. Second, the health law requires states to create insurance exchanges which will give small businesses more options and clout in purchasing insurance. The state exchange in California will allow small businesses to band together to purchase insurance, giving them the type of clout that large businesses enjoy when negotiating for coverage. In California, 3.76 million small-business employees and their dependents, and 840,000 self-employed people, will be eligible to purchase insurance through the exchange.

I am a Korean-American entrepreneur operating a small travel agency in San Jose. I have seven employees. One was diagnosed with liver cancer but our insurance provider has stipulated a limit on the cost that it will bear. What are the alternative options that I have? Can the new health care law help me? – Lianna Kim Answer: The health care law outlaws denial of insurance to those with pre-existing conditions. But this change won’t take full effect until 2014. But U.S. citizens and legal immigrants who have preexisting conditions and have been uninsured for at least six months will be eligible to enroll in the new Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) being offered through California’s Medical Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB). Maximum out-of-pocket cost sharing for enrollees will be $5,950 for individuals and $11,900 for families, per year. As of September 23rd, the law prohibits all health plans from imposing lifetime dollar limits on benefit payments. This provision applies to both old and new insurance plans. For people who have exceeded their lifetime limits before September 23, the plans must provide notice that the lifetime limit no longer applies, and provide an enrollment period for those who have disenrolled from the health plan.

I am a Latino entrepreneur running a Mexican restaurant in San Jose with 10 employees. I don’t have the time and expertise to figure out the most affordable and appropriate insurance cover for my employees. Does the new law simplify the insurance purchasing process? – Jose Rios Answer: California is required to create new health insurance exchanges for small businesses like yours and for individuals starting in 2014. This aims to make it simpler for individuals and small businesses to compare different policies by making it mandatory for participating insurers to meet a set of federal essential benefit standards. All plans will have no lifetime or annual limits on what insurers will pay, and must limit out-of-pocket costs to $5,950 for a single person and $11,900 for a family. Deductibles for small businesses can be no greater than $2,000 for a single policy or $4,000 for a family policy. Attorney Seeks Retrial in BART Shooting Case BY TERRY COLLINS AP WRITER SAN FRANCISCO — A lawyer representing the white former San Francisco Bay Area rapid transit officer convicted of fatally shooting an unarmed black passenger is asking a Los Angeles judge to grant a new trial. Defense attorney Michael Rains said in a 134-page filing Friday that Johannes Mehserle’s involuntary manslaughter convic-

tion should be overturned because jurors did not hear a similar case from Kentucky. In that April 2008 case, a police lieutenant mistook his handgun for a stun gun and shot a man in the back, wounding him. The lieutenant was not criminally charged. Rains also said Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert Perry erred in his instructions to the jury and that Mehserle’s gun enhancement conviction also

The 2010 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, worth $300,000, is named for the silent film sisters. Other prize winners have included

Ornette Coleman, Robert Redford and Merce Cunningham. “When I was a boy, growing up in Nigeria, becoming a novelist was a far-away dream,” Achebe says. “Now it is a reality for many African writers, not just myself.” Achebe’s novels describe the effects of Western customs and values on traditional African society, and his keen ear for spoken language made him one of the most highly esteemed African writers in English. should be overturned. “We want a new trial on the involuntary manslaughter conviction,” Rains said Monday. “And if the judge doesn’t want to do that, then he should throw out the gun enhancement.” John Burris, attorney for the California victim’s family, said Monday Rains’ arguments have already been made in court. “This is a rehashing of many of the old arguments made during the course of the trial,” Burris said. “In our view, involuntary manslaughter is the lowest form of conviction because the evidence supported a higher conviction. In my view, the judge should raise the punishment.” A jury convicted Mehserle in July in the 2009 New Year’s Day shooting death of Oscar Grant on an Oakland train platform. The incident was video-recorded by several passengers, shown on the Internet and subsequently used as evidence during Mehserle’s three-week trial. Mehserle said he feared Grant had a weapon and decided to shock him with his stun gun, but instead pulled his .40-caliber handgun. Grant was unarmed. The incident let to protests and rioting shortly after the shooting and the July 8 verdict.

to go the extra mile to close a sale.” Keep these five themes in mind from the moment you start planning your next move: 1. Dig deeper: You probably already know to use neighboring home values as a comparison point for selling or buying. But in today’s market, some additional homework can pay off. If you need to sell quickly, for example, keep a close eye on what other houses are selling for in your neighborhood and stay ahead of the market by pricing

yours lower. In the wake of the bursting real estate bubble, it’s also important to have a heightened awareness of foreclosures, both where you’re selling and buying. As unfair as it seems, any foreclosures on your street can put a dent in your home’s market value. And if foreclosures are still prevalent in the neighborhood you’re moving to, it could be a warning sign that values could continue to drop after you buy. 2. Be involved: Just because you’re working with a realtor doesn’t mean you can’t do some of your own legwork. “The first 10 days on the market are the most critical to selling a home because new listings tend to get the most attention from buyers,” says Brenda Wall, relocation See HOUSING MARKET, page 23

(ARA) — Not everyone who relocates has the luxury of doing it when school is out and the yard looks beautiful. If you’re forced to sell your house and/or buy a new one outside peak season, you might have to work a little harder and think creatively. Anyone who has bought or sold a home has heard the standard advice: Find a good agent, be aware of local home values, fix up the house you’re selling and research school districts and crime rates where you’re buying. “It’s all good advice, but it’s not always enough,” says Rich Novak, assistant vice president of Home Solutions, with USAA, a full-service financial services provider serving military personnel and their families. “Families who need to move quickly during a tough real estate market may need

clean renewable energy sources. The cost of the conference is steep for the average person as it is geared to industry participants. is engaged in the challenges and promise of the solar industry. We are working with in the industry to increase the growth of “Eco-Equity,” to use a term from Black environmental activist Van Jones, so that the African-American community and low-income people benefit from the “Green Revolution”. We will be sharing a booth at SPI with our commercial partner Independence Power. Come out and drop by to see us. Solar Power International is

b u s i n e s s

The largest Solar Industry conference in the nation will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center from Oct. 12 to 14 and it represents a unique opportunity for the African-American community to gain important insights into the magnitude and potential of the solar revolution to generate needed jobs in solar installation, sales, environmental sciences and management and to move our nation away from the hazards of coal and oil-based energy. Solar Power International 2010 is expected to draw 27,000 visitors and will showcase venders from across the globe. The conference will give attendees a chance to see the latest solar technology and to participate in a wide range of conference sessions ranging from key solar policy issues to new industry developments and financing of solar ventures. For L.A.’s AfricanAmerican community Solar Power International (SPI) is an opportunity to see first hand the newest and most efficient solar modules, installation tools and equipment, new solar thermal heating systems, smart-grid developments and displays that integrate solar into new uses like solar driven air-conditioning units for cars and homes. These advancements are transitioning our society from fossil fuel dependency to

national.com. The African-American community must actively participate in the wave of change that solar and other renewable technologies represent. We have to ask if our children are getting the kind of general education and math and science skills that will allow them to secure new jobs from hands-on solar installation to environmental science and technology development. Based upon the graduation rates at many of our schools the answer is no and we must address this issue with a sense of urgency. The technologies that will be displayed at SPI are shaping the future industries of our economy. The fact that the U.S. Military is making a huge push for renewables as a means to cut dependence on vulnerable fossil fuels is an important sign that the move to renewable energy generating technologies is not a fad, but a fundamental shift. After African-Americans were integrated into the military the push for integration in the civilian society was reinforced. The military’s strong push for solar and other renewable energy technologies will likely accelerated their adoption in the civilian sector. Perhaps the military’s move will also reduce the need to secure and control oil reserves a major factor/cause of global conflicts and their horrific

human suffering. Let us hope. I recommend that our elected officials, community groups and faith organizations attend SPI so that we can engage in a new level of discussion on the solar technology that is here and will be growing dramatically in the future. The upcoming conference is an excellent opportunity to gain insights that can inform and clarify strategies for increased African-American participation in the solar sector. Sentinel to Host 5th Annual Black Family Festival By Joy Childs Contributing Writer On most any weekend, you can find a food-tasting event in any of the communities that surround Los Angeles — from the “Taste of Beverly Hills” to “Lobsterfest” in San Pedro to the many and varied farmers’ markets. Each is a well-worn tradition in its own right. But Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., up and down Crenshaw Boulevard between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Rodeo Road is the only time and place you’ll be able go to the 5th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival. The brainchild of Los Angeles Sentinel publisher Danny Bakewell Sr., the event was created out of the huge void left by the Black Family Reunion at Exposition Park, which was discontinued in the 1990s. Event organizer Brenda Marsh-Mitchell explains the history leading up to the Taste of Soul: “Years ago, the National Council of Negro Women started the Black Family Reunion that used to be held in Exposition Park, and Mr. Bakewell, as one of the chairs helped to coordinate that. And he was so excited to see our community come together ... “And once the reunion ended, with Mr. Bakewell, being such a big advocate for the Black family and for families coming together feeling

safe and having a good time, he created The Taste of Soul.” Bakewell himself says: “A Taste of Soul was created to highlight the positive aspects of African-American life and to encourage the enjoyment, respect and appreciation of our community and each other in an atmosphere of peace, pride and pleasure.” A tough undertaking (when you consider that nobody had ever closed the stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard that runs down what many consider to be the heart of Black Los Angeles), the event has evolved from the first festival. At that fest, the street closure was from King Boulevard only to 39th Street, and attendance was estimated to be 35,000. It has successfully grown. “The police, fire department, politicians and businesses along Crenshaw were all so happy with our success,” Marsh-Mitchell says. Each year the area along Crenshaw has grown further and further north — originally at 39th Street, then to Coliseum, then to Rodeo Road, which is

currently the northernmost point of the festival. Folks flock from all over Southern California for the festival and the crowds have swelled as well, now totaling roughly 125,000. This year promises to be the biggest and best so far. The Sentinel and Mothers In Action, will play host to dozens of food and shopping booths. The sounds of soul will emanate throughout the mix of specialty areas, including an area just for the kids. It may be quite hot and it’s bound to be very crowded — but when what’s waiting for your taste buds at the end of the line is healthconscious Shabazz’s Fish and Grill or the Cobbler Lady’s pies and cookies or Ben King’s catfish and other seafood delicacies, it could be hard to pass up. Co-chairs Los Angles City Councilman Herb J. Wesson Jr., and Councilman Bernard C. Parks Sr. are the major sponsors, along with 102.3 KJLH, 7-Eleven, 94.7 The Wave and many others. It’s All Possible for Them That Believe

PERSON Of The Week Get Your Dreams Started Local Artist Collaborates with Starbucks to Inspire an Urban Neighborhood Patrick Henry Johnson

Pastor Michael W. Eagle Sr. BY PASTOR MICHAEL W EAGLE, SR., MA ST. MARK A M E CHURCH Scripture Mark 9: 14 - 27 A boy, afflicted by a demonic spirit, had been brought before the disciples of Jesus to be healed, but yet, after an encounter with the disciples, he still suffered from the ravages of his affliction! The disciples who had believed in Jesus, and had been sent out by Jesus and were about doing the work of Jesus, suddenly found themselves surrounded by an arguing, unruly crowd of instigating, complaining Pharisees, Sadducees, non-believers and scribes. Crowds — you do know crowds, don’t you? Those who feel they “got you” and put their foot on you and bring up your past not to remind you to do better, but to “dog you” from where you’ve already been. “Where’s your Jesus now?” somebody asked. “Your modification is not coming through. Your child is going to prison. Furlough days, sick days, behind in your bill payment days. “Where’s your Jesus now, your loved one is on their death bed?” Aah, the crowds. You do know crowds. But here comes Jesus ... with Peter, James and John down from the Mountain of Transfiguration. The mountain where He was in His own glory. The mountain where

God said, “This is my beloved Son; listen to Him.” Jesus came down from that same mountain, in His own glory and headed straight toward the problem facing His disciples. Lesson No. 1: Jesus is never too busy, preoccupied in His own glory or from sitting at the right hand of the Father, to not come down and see about His sheep. He may not come when you want Him, but He’s always ... on time. Lesson No. 2: When you get close to Jesus, close to your breakthrough, close to your answer, close to your healing, close to your blessing, it can seem like “all hell is breaking loose.” But, hold on. We can “call things that are not as though they were.” Hold on! You’re “too close to turn back now.” Hold on. “Weeping only endures for a night. Joy comes in the morning.” Jesus asked, “How long has he been like this?” The man said, “From childhood ... But if, you can do anything ... take pity and help us.” Jesus said, “If?” If I can do something? Ha! “All things are possible to him who believes.” The father said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And he and the crowd pushed closer: The gossipers wanted a front row seat and the storytellers, talebearers and skeptics wanted a peek. Jesus then spoke to the spirit and commanded the spirit to “come out and never enter” the boy again.

And the spirit wracked the boy even harder. The body convulsed and shook; kicked and screamed; foamed and rolled in the dirt, and eventually even collapsed. Most thought the boy had just died. But, Jesus reached down, took the boy by the hand ... and the boy stood up. Lesson No. 3: After all your convulsing and shaking, kicking and screaming, foaming and writhing, Jesus can still reach down, in the dirt, muck and mire, take you by the hand ... and stand you up. Because “All things are possible to him who believes!” We’ve got unlimited power from an awesome unlimited God who said, He’d never leave us nor forsake us, from an awesome unlimited begotten Son who said, “All things are possible to him that believes.” Doesn’t mean we can do anything we want — it means “God can do anything but fail.” It’s all possible to him or her that believes. Don’t you believe, today? All things are possible to him or her that believes. The crowd saw Him coming, ran to Him, greeted Him and was amazed by Him. I imagine they were amazed just because He showed up. Sometimes, when you’re talking about people they just show up. (Say amen, somebody!) And when He asked what they

Patrick Henry Johnson, a local artist whose murals have graced Los Angeles schools and community landmarks, unveiled his latest work, “Get Your Dreams Started!”, commissioned by Starbucks for their store on Washington and Crenshaw in Los Angeles. The mural depicts how a simple coffee bean evolves into a cup of coffee that inspires the manifestation of creative dreams and ideas. The mural came to be as a result of a casual meeting with Starbucks CEO, Howard Shultz. After a short visit to the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and 43rd Street, to view Patrick’s mural “The Gift,” discussion opened up about the possibility of completing other inspiring works for Starbuck stores throughout the inner city as part of the brand’s Urban Neighborhood Strategy. Who better to assist Starbucks in reaching this goal than Patrick Henry Johnson? Patrick Henry Johnson, CEO of PHJ Enterprises, an artistic media company which designs murals, hand painted apparel and graphic novels, has been commissioned by Los Angeles Unifies School District over the past few years to design and paint inspirational murals for various school campuses throughout the district. Since his start with Ozzimo and Associates, where he designed and painted murals at international ports of call for Princess Cruises, Patrick Henry Johnson has demonstrated the creative vision and excellence it takes to collaborate and convey the core values of corporate entities, while remaining relatable and engaging to the populace. His implementation of the Artistic Brand Enhancement model anchors him as a beacon at the forefront of Community Relations, as a visual voice for the people. were arguing about no one immediately gave an answer. Uh huh, not the Pharisees, Sadducees, haters, nor naysayers! Not even the disciples. Only one man spoke up: the father of the afflicted boy: I brought my son to be healed, the spirit seizes him, he grinds his teeth, becomes rigid. I asked the disciples to heal him, but they either couldn’t or wouldn’t. Jesus said, “Oh faithless generation; bring him to me!” And when the boy saw Jesus his body immediately went into convulsions, falling to the ground, rolling in the dirt and foaming at the mouth. • They were surrounded by looky loos, gossipers, haters and accusers who were expecting something to go wrong, and to chastise about and who did not, nor would not, believe Jesus’ disciples could do what He had sent them out to do. • They were argued with by

those who would talk about them rather than pray for them, “diss” them rather than support them and laugh at them rather than praise God for them. Which brings us to; • You’re praying — but the family is still breaking down. You’re tithing — but there’s another need coming up. You’re praising, but things just don’t seem to be going your way. Things may even seem worse than before you started to believe (say amen, somebody.) • The enemy can start foaming at the mouth, and fighting and screaming to take you down or out. • The pain can get stronger, nights can grow longer and it can look like you’re going to lose before you win. • Crowds — arguing with disciples who found themselves defending and confused and arguing back against those who challenged their resolve.

SPORTS BEAT B Notes, quotes and things picked up on the run from coast-to-coast and all the stops in between and beyond. UCLA and USC are sharing the local spotlight after the Washington Huskies upset the previously unbeaten Trojans, 32-31, in an embarrassing showdown at the L.A. Coliseum on Oct. 2. At the Rose Bowl that same day, the Bruins did what they were expected to do against Washington State: beat the Cougars, 42-28.

Francisco Giants will play against the Atlanta Braves. Also tonight, the New York Yankees will battle it out with the Minnesota Twins in their second playoff game. Dusty Baker’s Cincinnati Reds visits the Philadelphia Phillies Oct. 8 in a game 2 contest. Baker and the Texas Rangers’ Ron Washington are the only black managers in the playoffs. No matters what happens in the playoffs, Baker has a new two-year

Terrell Owens The Trojans trampled these same Cougars in Pullman, Wash., 50-16, on Sept. 25. Next up: UCLA will battle it out with Cal in Berkeley on Oct. 9. And the Trojans will be out of town to play against Stanford this weekend in Palo Alto. Hopefully Stanford’s players won’t put a 35-0 whoopin’ on the Trojans like they did UCLA in September. Troy’s players will be out for revenge for what the Cardinal did to them at the Coliseum last season in a crushing defeat. If UCLA wins and USC loses on Saturday, they both will wake up on Sunday with 4-2 records. Question: If Philadelphia Eagle Michael Vick hadn’t been “crucifiedâ€? against his quarterback rival Donovan McNabb and his Washington Redskins, recently would McNabb have prevailed 1712? I don’t think so. Vick and DeSean Jackson (of Long Beach Poly High School) would have found a way to win. McNabb was only 8 of 19 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Vick was 5 of 7 for 49 yards before he was “crucifiedâ€? by a gang of Redskins tacklers. He left the game with chest and rib injuries. The Cincinnati Bengals’ Terrell Owens had 10 catches for 222 yards, but his team lost to the Cleveland Browns (1-3) on Oct. 3, 23-20. There was at least one piece of good news for the Bengals: Owens has passed Isaac Bruce (15,208 yards) in receiving yards with 15,231 yards. He’s now in second place. Jerry Rice holds first place with 22,895 yards. And the beat continues‌ The MLB playoffs got underway recently. Tonight the San

AP Source: Vikes Get Moss From Patriots in Trade BY JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP SPORTS WRITER When Randy Moss first came to Minnesota 12 years ago, he electrified a stagnant franchise and immediately turned the Vikings into Super Bowl contenders. Now the Vikings need him to do it again. The New England Patriots traded the seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to the Vikings on Wednesday, giving Moss the exit he expected all along and sending him back to the place where he became a superstar, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the transaction had not been officially announced. ESPN first reported the deal was done, with the Patriots getting a thirdround draft pick. Moss will go from catching passes from Tom Brady in New England to hauling in Brett Favre’s throws with the Vikings, who desperately needed a downfield threat after Pro Bowl receiver Sidney Rice had hip surgery in August. The Vikings play at the New York Jets on Monday night, and they are only three and a half weeks away from an Oct. 31 game in Foxborough, Mass., against the Patriots. The Vikings began the year with championship aspirations after reaching the NFC title game in January. But they have lost two of their first three and Favre’s game has struggled to get off the ground with Rice and Percy Harvin both struggling with injuries. The Vikings have reverted to a run-first offense early this season, leaning heavily on Adrian Peterson while Favre tries to get on the same page with receivers. It’s been a revolving door all year, with the Vikings trading for Greg Camarillo late in August and signing Hank Baskett in Week 3, four days before their game against the Lions. “The problem is, it’s been a new guy every week and you say, ‘Okay, I’m going to play this guy at slot and this guy at flanker,’ and then the next week you take the flanker and you move him to slot, Favre said after a win over Detroit. The Vikings failed to trade for disgruntled Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson earlier this season, and Favre has said he would like to see another big receiver added to the roster. Undoubtedly, the soon-to-be 41year-old quarterback will be fine with who the Vikings got. Favre openly campaigned for the Packers to acquire Moss when Oakland put him on the trade block in 2007. The Patriots ultimately ended up parting with a fourth-round pick to pry Moss away, and Favre privately fumed at the swing and miss by the Green Bay front office. The Packers shipped Favre to the Jets in 2008 and he signed with

New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss (81) fends off Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga (58) in the second quarter an NFL football game, Sept. 12, in Foxborough, Mass. the Vikings in 2009. Now, Favre and Moss have finally been united. Moss was a first-round draft pick of the Vikings in 1998 and spent his first seven seasons with Minnesota, where he emerged as one of the biggest playmakers in the league. He was traded to Oakland in 2005, where he languished for two years before being revitalized in New England. Moss set an NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions in 2007, but is in the final season of a three-year, $27 million contract and has said several times that he expected 2010 to be his last season with the Patriots. He did not have a catch in a 41-14 win over Miami on Monday night. “When you have done so much and put so much work in, it kind of feels like I am not wanted, Moss said in September. “I am taking that in stride and playing my final year out and whatever the future holds is what it holds, but it is kind of a bad feeling—feeling not wanted. Moss later backtracked from those statements, telling The Associated Press that he hoped to finish his career with the Patriots. “For me to be 33 years old, it’s like I’m held at bay, he said. “If this is my last year here, I want to leave as good as I came in here in ’07. I know that’s really hard to duplicate, but I don’t want the fans, the organization, coaches or my teammates to have a sour taste in their mouths about Randy Moss. His agent, Joel Segal, said the Vikings have not contacted him about a long-term deal, so Moss joins a long list of Vikings in the final year of their contracts. Among them are Rice, linebackers Ben Leber and Chad Greenway and defensive end Ray Edwards. Vikings coach Brad Childress and vice president Rick Spielman were not in Minnesota during Moss’s original seven years there, though there’s no doubt he’ll be welcomed with open arms.

He caught 574 passes for 9,142 yards and 90 touchdowns in his first stint with Minnesota, bursting onto the scene in 1998 by catching deep throws from Randall Cunningham and helping a recordbreaking offense reach the NFC title game.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Fundraiser Makes Year Five a Star-Studded Success BY TENE PERRY CONTRIBUTING WRITER

James Avery

What appeared to be a beautiful, melodic mid-summer’s eve affair, actually took place on a very warm October 2nd day — accented with a light breeze, a hint of barbeque and not a brown leaf in sight. The climate couldn’t have been more perfect for the summer-dressed guests and artists attending the 5th Annual Jackie Robinson Foundation Jazz on the Grass (JAZZ) event. Held in the San Fernando Valley at a private residence, celebrities, philanthropists, jazz lovers and artists came together to enjoy great music, delicious food and good company — all in the name of a good cause. This starstudded fundraiser benefits the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s Scholarship Program which includes comprehensive mentoring, and leadership development. This year 10 students were honored and awarded with scholarships to the

four-year university of their choice. The master of ceremonies, actor and comedian Alonzo Bodden, kept the audience chuckling with his cynical quick wit between performances. There were performances by Marcus Miller, Mindi Abair, Kirk Whalum, Sheila E., Boney James, Freda Payne, Kat Dyson and Brian Bromberg. A memorable sight to see were the audience members all releasing themselves from their seats to be “Free” with Denise Williams, who gave an animated rendition of the 1976 classic. “Anything we can do to support … to love and take care of our kids, I’m in support of that,” said Williams, when asked about her first appearance at JAZZ. With it being her second appearance, Patrice Rushen explains why she’s happy to be returning to such a wonderful event: “ (For) Jackie Robinson to be such an amazing talent and to have go through what he went through in order to achieve his goals, to where

kids now are expecting that certain things will be open to them — and they have the right to expect this because that’s the way that it should be — but they need to also remember that it had to be earned by a lot of people, one life at a time.” In addition to the show, on display was a silent auction that donned items such as the luxury suite at Dodger Stadium for up to 20 guests (opening bid was $1,000) and a Lakers team-signed basketball (opening bid was $750), to the Quincy Jones-autographed DVD package (opening bid was $100). What started as an organized jazz concert at the home of Jackie and Rachel Robinson to raise bail money for jailed freedom fighters in the 1960s has grown into a benefit concert sponsored by Ford, Hennessy Privilege, Disney and others all supporting the efforts of providing opportunities to those in need. One can only guess how much more successful this event will become in the years ahead.

‘Billion Dollars Worth of Knowledge’ Percy Miller aka Master P sits down with the Weekender for an exclusive one on one interview

Percy Miller BY BRANDON I. BROOKS CO – MANAGING EDITOR Percy Miller, better known as rap superstar Master P, has come a long way since selling records out of the trunk of his car. “I am Percy Miller, also known as Master P and now I realize that Master P is my childhood,” said Miller in an exclusive interview with the Watts Times Weekender. The oldest of five children, Miller was raised in New Orleans, or as he so plainly stated, “Born and raised in the Calliope projects, one of the worst projects in New Orleans when it comes to violence and when it comes to poverty.” Raised by his grandmother, Miller, a very skilled basketball player, earned a scholarship to play for the University of Houston. Unfortunately, reality struck the young athletic star when his basketball career was stalled by a severe knee injury. Around the same time frame, his brother Kevin was killed which led the young Miller to leave school and move with family to Richmond, California. Proving to be resilient, Miller took an investment of $10,000 which was left to him after his grandfather’s death and opened a record store where he would continue to sale his independent rap music. Miller turned a successful “mom and pop” record shop into a promising record label — No Limit Records. Proving that an idea can be worth a lifetime of gold, Miller took the common everyday phrase “no limit”, and coined the slogan into an enterprise and as I like to properly phrase it, a hip-hop empire. Without the assistance of a major distribution company, Miller aka rap artist Master P, sold over 200,000 records independently. In 1994, his self-produced first album, “The Ghetto’s Tryin’ to Kill Me,” became an underground hit without garnering radio play. After signing a lucrative distribution contract with Priority Records, the percentage and profit due to be made by No Limit Records at the time weighed so much in the labels favor, it is rumored by industry insiders that distribution companies will never give a small label the same opportunity they gave Miller and No Limit Records. With destiny by his side and the deal signed and delivered, No Limit Records proved to be an industry phenomenon. An independent label in an industry dominated by corporate

giants, it regularly placed more albums in the top 40 charts than major labels such as Columbia and Capitol. In the spring of 1998, “MP Da Last Don,” billed as Master P’s last album, debuted, and it sold almost 500,000 albums the first week and skyrocketed to the number one position on Billboard's charts. As founder and CEO of No Limit Entertainment, Miller at one time presided over a business empire that included No Limit Records, Bout It Inc., No Limit Clothing, No Limit Films, No Limit Sports Management, P.M. Properties and Advantage Travel. In 1997 he earned a reported $56.5 million, and Forbes Magazine placed the then Master P in the Number Ten spot on its list of the most highly paid entertainers for that year. Percy Miller has even played professional basketball for the Fort Wayne Fury (1998) and tried out for the Charlotte Hornets (1999). Before the age of 30, he made his mark as a hip-hop recording artist, a movie producer, and the owner of the largest independent record label in the industry. “I think where I am at today I realize a lot of other people that come from this hip-hop culture, they don’t want to grow up,” said Miller. Miller also manages the music, film and television career of his son, Romeo and daughter Cymphonique. Romeo just finished a movie with Angela Bassett titled “Jumping the Broom.” “Romeo and Cymphonique have definitely stood out in the Entertainment world,” said Miller. “He’s been picked now by Hollywood as the next Will Smith. Some people have that magic and when it comes to that acting, I feel that’s a calling for him. Cymphonique could be the next Beyonce. She has her own television show set to premiere on Nickelodeon. They definitely can be mentors for this next generation and be role models.” This past year, Miller took hip-hop to new heights when he spoke in front of Congress about the current state of the culture and how the culture can be utilized for more positive messages if the product is managed responsibly. “Going to Congress I was able to speak because I realized that I started with no vision when I got into the music business,” said Miller. “I had a lot of profanity in my music and I realized that when you make music you change lives, you reach kids, you reach women, and I just thank the man up above in this life time that I was able to apologize to those women and kids and say, ‘You know what, we can’t be afraid to take a stand.’ When we grow up, we can’t be afraid to be responsible. You know I have a son that’s 21 years old now. His focus is education. He is at USC (University of Southern California) and I understand that education changes lives, its saves lives.” Miller’s brand and cultural influence continue to evolve through his new Take A Stand Records record label. The initiative is the only recording label committed to signing and promoting hip-hop artists with responsible image and lyrics. He’s also dedicated his time to communities through P. Miller Youth Centers and his P. Miller Food Foundation for the Homeless and his new speaking program on financial literacy, Urban Born. “I feel like I’m a billionaire now because I have a billion dollars worth of knowledge,” said Miller. “That’s my thing to kids now, give them some more vision.” And with a book titled “Million Dollar Sucker,” Miller hopes to tackle financial literacy. In the book Miller gives examples of his past failures and even gives examples of other celebrities and athletes that have failed at properly maintaining finances. “Look at my life and I say, ‘What are some of the dumbest things I’ve done? I bought gold ceilings in my house.’ That’s a sucker! Think about

it? The people that sold it to me sucked the money out of me. What’s a sucker? People take a sucker and they take as many licks until it’s gone. And if we let people keep sucking and sucking out of us until it’s gone, I don’t care how much money you got. And if you don’t understand financial literacy and understand the business you are in and educate yourself, if you don’t than you will lose, I don’t care what you have.” Miller shared that he is not going to be able to rap forever. He feels that if he doesn’t expose the mistakes he has made along the way to be successful then he knows we will not be able to fix this sickness we have in our culture. “It’s a disease,” said Miller. “I made myself a bigger target now. I understand that. I feel like how Martin Luther King (Jr.) and all those guys, I feel like that.” “Most people are getting paid off our ignorance,” said Miller. “So if we educate that culture, how many people want to see us succeed? Because at the same time, its taking money away. If you buying into ignorance and I teach you about something and clean you up, now you not getting that from me anymore. So it’s a cause and effect and I made myself a target. I made myself a target because I understand and I have to sacrifice myself for my son because I realized one thing in that he is so important to this culture because I got a second chance. But if I could start him off right he could change the world because he ain’t made the mistakes I made.” Miller even spoke with the Watts Times Weekender about the hazy relationship with his brother, rapper C-Murder who was convicted of murder in 2009 and is currently awaiting an appeal of the verdict. “I love my brother and I would do anything for him,” said Miller. “C’s situation is very sensitive because he’s in a system that points the finger in New Orleans. C-Murder, the name alone convicts you in this world. Back then when we came up, he didn’t know his name would come back to haunt him 10 years from now. It doesn’t make it any better when you in a system where the criminal system is corrupt. C’s case, you have judges that are trying to get positions now if they convict this kid. It’s political. He’s innocent but with all the ties and everything with his name is, who cares? They don’t care about and urban kid life because they are doing nothing but killing each other up anyway, that’s how they look at us as a whole.” Miller has also made history as the first hip-hop entrepreneur to own a cable television network, Better Black Television, (BBTV) whose aim is to promote positive messages and content to the African American culture. The network was launched in 2009. Executives include Denzel Washington, Derek Anderson of the Charlotte Bobcats, DJ Kool Herc and Bo Derek. “My thing is when you are dealing with youth, it can’t all be positive,” said Miller referring to potential programming See MASTER P, page 22

After the March

Editorial GOP PLEDGES TEA PARTY LYCHING RACIST STRATEGY DEPENDS ON LOW MINORITY TURNOUT In a stunning display of bigotry and viciousness, powerful Republicans are raising millions of dollars to support an extreme crop of GOP candidates for the midterm elections. They are called “Tea Party candidates,” and they are being funded by the super rich who have been promised $4 trillion in tax cuts for their support by the GOP. These Tea Party Republicans are directly attacking blacks, Latinos, women and gays — and they are winning votes in the process. “The Republicans are pandering to the most primitive elements of their base,” said the Rev. Eric Lee of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. “The pedigrees of their candidates prove it. The GOP is running Saboteurs, Satanists, Scientologists, and Survivalists. This is just like the Nazis in depression-era Germany attacking the Jews.” At first, many pundits thought that the GOP was simply disorganized, and actually hurting their chances in November by supporting

the Tea Party candidates. Who would possibly support people like Jim Miller in Alaska, who defends hate crimes as “free speech,” or Christina O’Donnell in Delaware, who practices witchcraft and wants to ban masturbation? But then suddenly, the method to the Republican madness became clear in a new GOP document ominously called … “A Pledge to America.” In this document, the GOP calls for tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent in the country. This is the same 2 percent that now controls over 50 percent of the nation’s income, thanks largely to eight years of tax cuts given to the wealthy under President George Bush. These tax cuts, according to leading economists, will add $4 trillion to the national debt. Clearly the cuts are meant to serve as a powerful inducement for the rich to fund these extremist Tea Party candidates, especially now since the Bush Supreme Court recently allowed unlimited corporate spending on elections. Thus, the midterm election

strategy of the GOP is patently obvious: Reward the Super Rich for financing the Tea Party and have the Tea Party turn out the “Joe Six Packs” and the “Hockey Moms” in November. “Midterm elections are base elections,” said a republican strategist who asked to remain unnamed. “The party that gets its traditional supporters out to vote is more likely to carry the day. And the Republicans’ base, even the parts of it that are insurgent, unpredictable, and kooky, is highly motivated right now to topple the Democrats in November.” Lee is not alone in his assessment of the Republicans running not only for the Congress but also for the Senate. Ron Brownstein of the wellrespected National Journal Magazine recently said on ABC’s “This Week,” that, “This is an Extreme Makeover of the Republican Party. It is the most militantly conservative class … of candidates … in the past half-century.” See EDITORIAL, page 23

Accountability and Leadership BY REV. AL SHARPTON NNPA COLUMNIST When the now-infamous allegations against Bishop Eddie Long first surfaced, the world — and specifically the African-American community — paused for a seemingly endless moment. Attempting to cope with the complexity of the situation, we began questioning everything from faith and leadership to sexuality and civic responsibility. An ongoing issue within the Catholic Church, this was the first time that we, within the Black Church, was faced with the troubling notion of pedophilia and abuse of power. And, though nothing has been confirmed nor denied at this point in time, this difficult period should serve as the quintessential teachable moment on a plethora of levels for everyone who cares about the future of our community, the Black Church, and our children. To be clear, let’s first remind ourselves that Pastor Long is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Our constitution affords all of us a just trial within the judicial system, and we should honor it no matter what the views in the court of public opinion may be. That being said, we can highlight the need for growth within leadership, and the duty upon all of us to assess our own shortcomings and potential hypocrisy. Public figures — myself included — must be more commit-

The Rev. Al Sharpton

ted to our cause than our own attractions or distractions in life. Throughout the years, I have learned that public figures must live and function to a higher standard or else they run the risk of getting in the way of what they represent. Whether that cause is political reform, immigration law or civil rights, as is the case with me, all leadership must adhere to a greater code of excellence, if we are to witness the progress we wholeheartedly champion in our day-to-day struggles. Next, it’s time that the Black Church and the African-American community begin engaging in an open and frank conversation over the issue of homophobia. For far too

long, we have dodged the bullet on this reality, and the end result has been catastrophic for all of us. Because of a massive stigma and fears of castigation, many live dual realities — on the one end pretending they are fathers and husbands, and on the other, living on ‘the down-low’. Not only has such an existence denied people the opportunity to live openly and freely as they choose, but it has greatly contributed to the skyrocketing number of HIV/AIDS cases among AfricanAmerican women who may be unaware of the activities of their husbands/boyfriends. As we continue discussing Pastor Long’s alleged crimes, we must ask ourselves, would this have been such a big issue if it were a heterosexual allegation? And finally, we must keep in mind that Clergy, like all other human beings, are imperfect and will make mistakes. But, we cannot and will not allow for them to be hypocrites. When a man or woman assumes the role of religious leadership or any leadership for that matter, we must ensure that they are leading by example and not by mere verbiage. Pastors and those who choose to guide others must be held accountable for what they preach and what they espouse from the pulpit. Their actions must coincide with their teachings, and if they do not, then the responsibility rests upon all of us to call them out on it. See SHARPTON, page 22

As the legalities of Pastor Long’s case will eventually reveal the truth, in the meantime, we must ensure that we begin tackling some of our own half-truths and shortcomings. Public figures like myself must continue living and functioning to a higher standard, and the public must be ready to hold us liable if and when we do not. The African-American community must begin to grapple with the very real existence of homosexuality, and it is the responsibility of everyone to hold our Clergy and leadership accountable to their words and actions. Out of the turmoil, pain and shock of the Bishop Long situation, if we can master these challenges, then we in effect master the teachings of this very real and very grave moment.

director with ERA Colonial Real Estate in San Antonio, Texas. “Anything a seller can do to get their home ready to sell before putting it on the market would be helpful, including de-cluttering, cleaning, painting if needed and making the home look spacious and bright.” The Internet and social media have opened limitless new strategies to sell your home and find your next one. Try Craigslist, Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube. And don’t be shy, say real estate agents. When you’re selling, post pictures that show your home at its best and upload a narrated video tour — because that’s what you’d want to see as a buyer. At some real estate agencies, a video tour is becoming the new requirement for sellers.

3. Accept a helping hand: Take advantage of a wide range of services, beyond your local realtor’s, that could help you streamline the buying and selling process. Some cost money, such as home “staging” services that can help whip your house into selling shape. Others are free, such as relocation benefits offered by some employers, or the military’s Homeowners Assistance Program. One free service actually helps you while you are out and about looking for a place to live. For example, Home Circle from USAA provides free home search services on the Web and through an iPhone app that gives you access to the same comprehensive listing information real estate agents use, driving directions to the homes you’ve searched and organization of pictures taken to

and are sounding the alarm.” On the other hand, Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia — who is also the current chairman of the Democratic National Committee — has been slow on the draw to the call for black and minority communities to advertise, advertise, advertise to energize the base. “Given the current climate, an anti-abortionist, clinging to a slim margin in a swing state like Virginia, may not be the best general for this war,” Bakewell said. “The man won’t heed a call or spare a dime when it comes to us.” Meanwhile, black leaders are doing what they can to survive the Tea Party onslaught. “Everybody knows the Tea Party candidates are a danger to themselves and others,” Bakewell

said. “But if the Democrats don’t put some serious money into the black and minority press and other GOTV minority groups nationwide, this is going to be a lynching. “The Democrats will lose both the House and the Senate. It’s not as if labor and the poor have much to cheer about right now. They didn’t get the Employee Free Choice Act passed; they’re way behind on immigration reform, and black unemployment is stratospheric. These groups are loyal to the Democrats in spirit, but their spirits are low. “I hope Democratic Committee Chairman Kaine wakes up and helps Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Whip James Clyburn keep our party (Democrats) in control of the Congress.”

taxes on the middle class, attacking Social Security and shipping more jobs overseas. Instead of a pledge to the American people, Congressional Republicans made a pledge to the big special interests … at the expense of the middle class.” Can the Democrats recover and defend their House and the Senate majorities? That depends. Pelosi and Democratic Majority Whip James Clyburn are visibly in the trenches, making the calls and knocking on the doors. “Pelosi and Clyburn are vigorously and vigilantly campaigning,” said Danny Bakewell Sr., chairman of the National Newspapers Publishers Association, which represents 200 minority papers and 19.8 million readers. “They know a Jim Crow when they see one flying

EDITORIAL To give the Tea Party extremists credibility, mainstream Republicans are working hard to support them and camouflage the more unsavory characteristics of their new wouldbe freshmen. For example, Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has raised thousands of dollars for Nevada Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle, a Scientologist who has called for an “armed revolt” against the Obama administration. “I would be happy to appear at any Washington appearance that she had,” McConnell said of Angle in an interview with Politico.com, a popular online political magazine. “Breathtaking,” is how Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the GOP strategy. “… The Republicans … are raising

help you keep track of all the homes you’ve seen. Chances are you qualify for some type of assistance through an employer, the government, or an association you belong to — you just have to ask. 4. Get creative: Sometimes it takes out-of-the-box ideas to seal a deal. If you know that a potential buyer is wavering on whether to make an offer on your house, buck convention by making a “reverse offer,” where you try to win the sale with an attractive price. Sellers might also sweeten the pot with extra incentives. Money toward closing costs or prepaid homeowner’s dues are common buyer incentives, but why not set yourself apart by offering a free trip to a beach resort? If you’re the one buying but can’t find the perfect house, ask your agent to look up houses that were recently taken off the market. You might be able to request a “one-time showing” and get a bargain price on a house the owners thought they couldn’t sell. 5. Remain flexible: According to the experts, buyers and sellers should keep their pride in check and be willing to make some concessions, especially in a tough market. That means not haggling over minor repairs or refusing to leave behind the chandelier your potential buyer loves. Factor in the cost of keeping up your home for several more months versus just accepting a lower selling price today. “Always think in terms of the bigger picture. Don’t lose a deal over $500,” says Jodi Van Wagner, a Coldwell Banker agent in the Pensacola, Fla., area. Even in the most sluggish real estate market, an early start and an open mind are two of the best strategies to make your next move go smoothly.
