From St. Bernard High School to the NFL Joselio Hanson started his football career at St. Bernard and a lot of hard work has him playing on Sundays for the Philadelphia Eagles BY JASON LEWIS SPECIAL TO THE WATTS TIMES

Iverson scores 15 points in debut in Turkey ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson has scored 15 points in his debut for Besiktas Cola Turka but failed to carry his team to victory against Hemofarm Stada. Hemofarm Stada defeated Besiktas 94-91 in a European Cup game on Tuesday in Istanbul. Turkish fans shouted “Allen Iverson, the son of Besiktas Cola Turka during the match.

Redskins have out clause in McNabb’s new contract BY JOSEPH WHITE AP SPORTS WRITER

The 11-time NBA All-Star had agreed to a $4 million, two-year contract with Besiktas after no NBA team offered him a contract for the season. Iverson is 17th on the NBA’s career scoring list with 24,368 points over a 14-year career with Philadelphia, Denver, Detroit and Memphis. He won the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2001.

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb watches the closing minutes of the Redskins’ 59-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFL football game, Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, in Landover, Md.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP)— Nothing is straightforward about Donovan McNabb these days. It turns out the $40 million he is supposed to be guaranteed in his new contract could turn out to be a mere $3.5 million. McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, clarified some of the details of McNabb’s deal Tuesday. He says while the contract is worded so that it has “$40 million in guarantees, the Redskins do have an option to cut McNabb at the end of the season with no further money due. McNabb receives a $3.5 million bonus this year as part of the new agreement, but the rest of the five-year, $78 million package

would come to naught if the team decides to cut ties. The clause essentially gives the Redskins seven more games to decide if McNabb is truly the quarterback to lead the team under coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan infamously benched McNabb in the final 2 minutes of a loss to Detroit two weeks ago, but the contract extension was supposed to solidify the relationship between the team and the quarterback. On Monday night, hours after signing the new deal, McNabb and the Redskins played one of the worst games in franchise history, See McNABB, page 6

Joselio Hanson never let the “freaks-of-nature players stop him from achieving his goal of high stepping into the endzone in the NFL like Deion Sanders. The Inglewood native grew up a huge sports fan, but football did not start out as his passion. “I was a basketball fanatic, that was my first love, Hanson said. “I loved the Lakers and I thought I was going to the NBA, but I stopped growing. At 5’9, it would be tough to make it as a basketball player, but that is the right size for a cornerback. Hanson did not play organized football until his freshman year at St. Bernard, and he did not have the stellar career like many blue-chip athletes. “I like to say that I’m a late bloomer, Hanson said. “I’d say it was around 12th grade when it really clicked and I started playing a lot better. Actually, in the 11th grade I didn’t even start; I didn’t play. When Hanson got his chance, he made the most of it, and he’s been doing that ever since. He helped lead St. Bernard to the state finals his senior year, and then he moved onto El Camino Junior College. Hanson had a great experience at El Camino, where he was a standout cornerback, and he was a good student. “I don’t think it was that tough, and it got easier for me, Hanson said. “Because in high school it was like everyday we had six periods and you had to go to all of those classes everyday. In college you have classes every other day, or you go to some classes three days a week and some classes two days a week. It got easier for me to manage my grades and I was getting all As and Bs. El Camino prepared him for the next level, which was Texas Tech University. “When you go to junior college, coaches come from everywhere, Hanson said. “Coaches came from Arkansas, Illinois, Texas Tech. If you go to a good junior college, like El Camino, that is known for having a good football team, a lot of colleges are going to come to check guys out. Texas Tech was looking for a cornerback, and Hanson was the best on the team at that position, so he packed his bags and headed to Lubbock, Texas. Hanson did not have any issues playing in front of a much larger crowd. “People think that the more people who are there, the more nervous you’ll be, Hanson said. “But that pumps me up. Like I’m about to put on a show in front of all of these people. After excelling at Texas Tech, Hanson looked to move on to the next level, and he didn’t let any negative

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Joselio Hanson has worked his way from a reserve player at St. Bernard high school to an impact player in the NFL. reports stop him; he just needed to get his foot through the door. “They said I was too small, not fast enough, Hanson said. “They were saying all that stuff back in high school. They’re always trying to knock you down. But coming out into the NFL, they want the freaks of nature. The 6-foot guys running 4.2s (40-yard dash time), the strong buff guys. But I just kept pushing. Hanson was not selected in the 2003 NFL Draft, so he signed as a free agent with the 49ers, which happened to be the team that he rooted for growing up. Being an undrafted free agent, Hanson was pretty much on the bottom of the totem pole, and he did not get the same treatment as the high draft picks. “They’re a lot more relaxed out there in training camp, Hanson said. “Everyday was like the game to me. You have to always be on point. All I wanted to do was make plays everyday and I did. They saw something in me and kept me around for two years. Heading into Hanson’s third year there was a coaching change, which does not bode well for many on the bubble players. Hanson was released and out of the NFL in 2005. But that did not stop his dreams of making it big as a professional football player. Hanson headed to NFL Europe, where he was one of the top players for the Frankfort Galaxy, who won the World Bowl title that year. Several NFL teams noticed Hanson’s great play, and the Philadelphia Eagles then gave him a chance. But it was an uphill battle once again. Hanson was signed in July, but many of the players had been practicing since April, so he was already behind. He was back to making plays everyday in practice just to make the roster. The Eagles liked his abilities, so he was able to stick around. “The first couple of years I’d come in when players would get injured, Hanson said. “I don’t wish injury on anybody, but you know, it worked out great for me. Guys would go down and I’d come in and play

against guys like TO (Terrell Owens) and all the big name receivers, and I’d do well. So that propelled me to the next level. When they wanted to make changes they felt like I was a player, and they signed me to a good deal. See HANSON, page 5

Leslie Uggams is an ‘Uptown/Downtown’ girl BY DARLENE DONLOE SPECIAL TO THE WATTS TIMES Leslie Uggams has this showbiz thing down pat. She’s recorded albums, appeared in concerts, starred on television, won an Emmy (‘Fantasy’), made movies and appeared on Broadway, where she earned a Tony Award for ‘Hallelujah, Baby! And, after 60 years in entertainment, the legendary performer shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, currently she’s preparing to take the stage in a production that is both personal and revelatory. On Nov. 16, the singer/actress is set to open at the Pasadena Playhouse in, ‘Uptown Downtown,’ an evening of stories and songs that tells how Uggams successfully began and maintained her celebrated career. The show is called ‘Uptown Downtown’ because Uggams takes the audience on a journey from her beginnings in ‘Uptown’ New York, where she was born (Washington Heights) and eventually started singing at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre — to ‘Downtown’, where she starred on Broadway. The idea for the show came from her friend and collaborator Michael Bush, who urged her to tell her story. Bush, who is the show’s director, was also her collaborator on “Stormy Weather,” a show that starred Uggams as Lena Horne and broke records for ticket sales at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2009. The idea was hatched earlier this year after Uggams performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of the American Songbook. Peppered in her performance were anecdotes about her career and the people she has met along the way. “I agreed to do the American Songbook because New York is my home and I wanted to do something special,” said Uggams, who recently won an Audelco Award for her starring role in First Breeze of Summer at the acclaimed OffBroadway Signature Theatre. “I hadn’t done anything in New York in a long time.” Her show was so successful and well received that Bush and Uggams, realizing they had something special decided to branch out with the show. “I’m not doing a confessional,” said Uggams. “Actually, I’ve lived a rather sane life. But, the show is filled with good music and interesting stories that I hope everyone will like.” And, when it comes to good music, ‘Uptown Downtown’ features selections like “There’s a Boat That’s Leaving Soon for New York” (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, Dubose Heyward), “Them There Eyes” (Maceo Pinkard, Doris Taubre, William Tracey), “On the Town,” “Porgy and Bess,” “My Own Morning” (Betty Comden, Adolph Green, Jule Styne), ‘Being

Leslie Uggams Good from “Hallelujah, Baby!,” “Hello, Young Lovers” (Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II) and more. All of this music is very familiar to Uggams, who literally grew up in showbiz. When she was nine-years-old, Uggams was the opening act at The Apollo for entertainment icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Louie Armstrong and Dinah Washington, who she affectionately called “Aunt Ella, Pops and Aunt Dinah, respectively.” She also played Ethel Waters’ niece on the television series, Beulah and made appearances on Your Show of Shows, The Milton Berle Show, and The Arthur Godfrey Show. When she was a teenager Uggams landed a recording contract with Columbia Records and became a regular on Sing Along With Mitch, making her one of the first African American performers to regularly be seen on a prime-time program. Next came The Leslie Uggams Show, a television variety program and then her unforgettable role as Kizzy in Roots. Her Broadway credits include: starring alongside James Earl Jones in On Golden Pond and co-starring in the Broadway hit Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2001, her Broadway portrayal of Ruby in August Wilson’s King Hedley II was nominated for a Tony Award. Her Off-Broadway performances include: The Old Settler and Keb Mo’s blues musical Thunder Knocking on the Door. Uggams, who still lives in New York, is excited about her return to the Pasadena Playhouse. “I’ve done two shows at Pasadena and the audiences there ‘get it’,” said Uggams, who became a first time grandmother in August with the birth of her granddaughter, Kassidy. “If you’re doing a good show, it works everywhere.” See LESLIE UGGAMS, page 6

Brandy Becomes the Latest Victim of Sarah Palin and the Tea Party

AP Photo by Adam Larkey

BY JOY CHILDS SENTINEL CONTRIBUTING WRITER

In this publicity image released by ABC, Brandy, left, and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy perform on the celebrity dance competition series, “Dancing with the Stars,” Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 in Los Angeles.

I’m not a fan of reality TV — at all. Truly I’ve never watched any of them, including and especially two of the most popular: “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars.” But in its 11th season, with not one, not two, but three AfricanAmerican celebrities on at the same time on DWTS — Brandy, Kyle Massey and Rick Fox — I thought I might just try to see what the big deal is about this most popular of television genres. It was my humble opinion that at the outset, the best dancers were Brandy, Rick Fox and Jennifer Grey. Maybe, maybe, you could add Massey — if only for his sheer enthusiasm — and Kurt Warner for his grace. But no matter what, never, ever, ever would I have added Bristol Palin to the list. Not at the beginning of this 11th season, nor in the middle, nor as a semi-finalist. And yet, there she stood this past Monday night when host Tom Bergeron identified the four semifinalists: Palin, Massey, Grey and Brandy. Everybody knows that the finals should have been between Brandy and Grey. But I knew something was amiss when Fox and Warner were eliminated

www

and Palin remained. You don’t have to be a dancer to know that Palin is not a dancer, or a lousy dancer at best. Yes, she improved modestly over the first few weeks. And given the opportunity to stay beyond those first few weeks, she got a little bit better. But there’s a reason Palin has consistently landed at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard: She can’t dance! Certainly not better than Fox — and Brandy? OMG, OMG, OMG!

But with her mother Sarah in regular attendance and, with what must have been an underground Tea Party drive for her to win, Bristol Palin managed to outlast Brandy, who got the boot this week, to get to the finals. Some say that once the judges vote, the rest is a mere popularity contest. I say, while Brandy is undoubtedly infinitely more popular that Bristol, she’s not more popular than Bristol’s mama.

HANSON

Continued from page 4 Hanson comes off as a humble person, and when he said “good deal” he was really downplaying a five-year, $21 million contract. Hanson earned that contract by working hard and never listening to any detractors. It also helped when he returned a fumble for an 87-yard touchdown in week 17 of the 2008 season against the Dallas Cowboys. When he got to the endzone, he danced like Deion Sanders. He had

reason to celebrate. The victory sent the Eagles to the playoffs. Hanson has some good advice for anybody wanting to reach their goals: “Stick with it and don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do it,” Hanson said. “And have faith in God. Having a relationship with God really helped me out. You have to pray about it and things will come true for you.”

Word of the Week

Person of the Week

A Reason To Be Thankful Eric Peterson named

eventually kills the complainer. Not only that, but complaining is contagious. If we are around people who are complaining, sooner or later we will find ourselves complaining. While complaining, says Meyer, is a death principle, being thankful is a life principle. The complainer, who finds everything that is wrong with life, has no reason to be

thankful. The psalmist, in the 100th Psalm, exhorts worshippers as they come to worship to be “thankful.” Shout to the Lord, he says, and worship with gladness (vv. 1-2). Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving and God’s courts with praise (v. 4). Give thanks, the psalmist says, and praise the name of the Lord (v. 4). Believers can praise and worship the Lord because they “know the Lord” and they knew what the Lord had done. They knew of the goodness of the Lord. And so the psalmist simply says in verse 5, that the Lord is good (v. 5). David said the Lord’s goodness (and mercy) follows us (Psalm 23). The Lord’s love endures forever (v. 5b). John, in his gospel, says that God loved us so much that God gave the only begotten Son and whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). And then the psalmist says that the Lord’s faithfulness is a reason to be thankful. The Lord is faithful through all generations (v. 5). God’s faithfulness never fails. He blessed me. He brought me. He taught me. He kept me. He held me. He fed me. He clothed me. He raised me. He delivered me. He washed me. He made me. He saved me. He died for me. I’ve got a reason to thank God.

BY REV. DR. KELVIN T. CALLOWAY SENIOR PASTOR, BETHEL A.M.E. CHURCH Scripture: Psalm 100:1-5 Some time ago, I led a Bible study group in a study of Joyce Meyer’s book, entitled “Battlefield of the Mind.” This exciting study helped us to recognize where the battle for our souls (according to Meyer) are won and lost: the battlefield of the mind. Our minds, she said, are the essence of our being and the place where God wants to dwell. “Let this mind be in you,” the Apostle Paul admonished the Philippians Christians, which was also in Christ Jesus (Phil. 2:5). In the beginning, John said in his Gospel, was the “word” or the logos; the very reason or mind of God (John 1:1). God wants to save our souls, but the battle, says Meyer, begins with our minds. If the adversary controls our minds, the adversary controls us. If the adversary controls our thoughts, the adversary controls us. Many doors, says Meyer, are opened to the adversary through complaining. Christians are physically ill and spiritually weak because of complaining. Complaining, she says, is a death principle. LESLIE UGGAMS Continued from page 5

It’s clear that Uggams, who has no plans to retire, loves her work. The feisty thespian, who eats right and works out (but ‘hates it’) to maintain good health and energy, is always ready for the next show. “I love what I do,” she said. Uggams, who co-stars in the soon-to-be-released independent film, Toe to Toe, says she’s just as excited today about performing as she was at the beginning of her career. “Oh, yeah, I’m still excited,” said Uggams. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it. You gotta have joy. I still get butterflies before going on stage because I want it to be right. When that is no longer happening it’s time to give it up.” ‘Uptown Downtown’ provides Uggams no safety net. It’s just her and an eight-piece orchestra. “This is a two act production,” said Uggams. “I think everyone is

McNabb tied a career-high with three interceptions and is only two interceptions away from a career-high for a season, but he is also playing in a new offense with a suspect offensive line and not enough reliable receiving targets. Asked about his chances of not being with the Redskins next season, McNabb said Tuesday on his weekly radio show on ESPN980 that there is language in the deal that was necessitated by the possibility of a lockout.

“That doesn’t mean I won’t be a Redskin,” McNabb said. “I will be here next year. … Not just next year, but after that as well.” McNabb also responded to Cincinnati receiver Terrell Owens, who took a dig at McNabb over the Monday night debacle by tweeting: “How do u justify a 78 million dollar contract w/this type of performance?” “It’s funny he’s worried about what I’m doing,” McNabb said. “When what are they, 2-6?” Worse than that. The Bengals are actually 2-7.

The Los Angeles Sentinel Book Club (LASBC) featured inspirational and motivational speaker Iyanla Vanzant at the Museum of African American Art Sunday, Nov. 14. The New York Times bestselling author was present to sign her new book, “Peace from Broken Pieces.” Vanzant is the most recent author to be featured by the LASBC; others who have been featured in the past include actor Louis Gossett Jr. and professor Charles Ogletree. The evening started with performances by a children’s choir, dancers from the California Dance Center, and Christmas Tree Lighting with actress, producer and choreographer, Debbie Allen. The book signing had about 300 in attendance as well as LASBC members. Talk show host Tavis Smiley introduced and shared some personal remarks about Vanzant. And he also introduced her to a rousing applause. Her new book explores the pain and history that has made Vanzant into the visionary she is today. It is a personal account of life’s trials and how people can learn to pick up broken pieces of their lives and turn them into a work of art. “I think it was wonderful and it’s an old-time event where all the community comes together,” said Vanzant. “We don’t run out, we’re still here gathering. I think we need more events like this in our community.” Vanzant signed the books of admirers and readers waiting in line. For those interested in joining the book club, know that there are two member packages. People can join the book club for $90 and get a one-year subscription to the Sentinel and L.A. BY NADRA KAREEM Special to the L.A. Watts Times Soul singer Angie Stone says she never thought she’d get diabetes. Because she didn’t binge on junk food and sweets, Stone considered herself to be low-risk for the chronic illness that affects the body’s ability to use insulin, described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the “hormone that allows (sugar) to enter cells and be converted to energy.” But when she was diagnosed with diabetes more than a decade ago, Stone joined the ranks of the estimated 3.7 million African- American adults living with the disease. Although Stone says she found it difficult to manage her diabetes initially, she’s since made lifestyle changes — forgoing fried food in favor of baked, using sugar substitutes and walking more — to keep the disease in check. Additionally, for three years, Stone has worked with F.A.C.E. Diabetes, which stands for Fearless African-Americans Connected and Empowered, to reach out and provide support for African Americans with type 2 diabetes. While type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity and physical inactivity and typically diagnosed in adults 40 and older, type 1 diabetes is typically diagnosed in children and may be autoimmune, genetic, or environmental in nature, according to the CDC. The former is much more common than the latter, accounting for up to 95 percent of all diabetes cases. Millions of people have diabetes and don’t know it because they lack symptoms or the knowledge to identify the symptoms. Common signs of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst or hunger, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, frequent infections, numbness in hands and feet, and cuts that heal slowly, according to the American Diabetes Association. Why is getting tested important? Because undiagnosed diabetes may cause heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and damage to the limbs requiring amputation. In light of the fact that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, the L.A. Watts Times spoke with Stone about her journey with the illness and about the F.A.C.E. Diabetes campaign, which offers exercise, diet tips and more. For additional information, visit www.face-diabetes.com. Nadra Kareem: How did you react after learning you had diabetes? Angie Stone: I was like everybody else: shocked and overwhelmed. In

9

my case, I didn’t eat a lot of junk food. I was never a big sweets eater, but it’s heredity. My mom’s a diabetic, which made me a candidate. I found out by way of frequent urination and dry mouth. I depleted myself of all my electrolytes. I was at an amusement park when I got sick and went to the clinic on the fairgrounds. My legs cramped up, and I couldn’t walk. NK: Let’s talk about the F.A.C.E. Diabetes campaign. AS: The F.A.C.E. initiative is designed to go out and educate diabetics about better management and to raise awareness about the importance of being tested. The F.A.C.E. campaign has gone to Atlanta and Chicago. We’ve stopped at churches and YMCAs just to promote better health care. We want to get the attention of many people. We provide tons of information on what to eat and how to exercise. NK: What’s the best way to combat diabetes? AS: I think awareness is the key. The first step is to make sure that everybody is aware of it and how to take control of it. Diabetes should be tested for just like tuberculosis or cancer. We should all get tested so we can learn more about what it takes to control the disease. That’s just a suggestion. NK: What’s been the biggest achievement of the F.A.C.E. campaign to date? AS: I think the biggest achievement is reaching the neighborhoods, going to the people. It’s an attitude of, ‘You don’t come to us; we’ll come to you.’ NK: What can the general public do to help fight diabetes? AS: I think just making sure you’re giving everyone the necessary warning signs to become aware and to be an encouragement to everyone in your family who’s diabetic. NK: With the holidays coming up, is it tempting for diabetics to fall off the wagon and abandon their diets? AS: Once you’re a diabetic, you won’t fall off the wagon. All we can do as diabetics is to promote even better health care right now. Everything I’m doing now is going to affect me for years to come.

Too little, Too late

DNC abandons black voters and loses the House BY DANNY J. BAKEWELL SR. CHAIRMAN OF THE NNPA/ EXECUTIVE PUBLISHER-L.A. WATTS TIMES At the funeral of former Democratic National Committee Chairman Ronald Brown, President Bill Clinton made an announcement stunning to some but obvious to us. And that was, had it not been for the black vote, he would not have been elected president in l992 and reelected in l996. In the recent critically important midterm elections, officials of the DNC either ignored this political fact or simply took the black vote for granted. The results were a disaster for Democratic house members. Why did the DNC fail to mobilize and maximize the black vote in the midterm elections? This is a salient question because it is, or should be obvious, that in a close election the turnout of black voters will be the difference between victory and defeat. One answer to this question is the fact that the national committee invests the bulk of its resources in reaching out to voters it was unlikely to get and didn’t get, while largely ignoring the most loyal and traditional base of the party, Black voters. It’s not as if another path wasn’t suggested. I personally, on behalf of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (Black Press of America) and our more than 200 Black publishers nationally, produced proposals for aggressively reaching the black voter nationally.

However, despite my discussions with national committee Chairman Tim Kaine, he and his trusted DNC minions turned their backs on us (the NNPA) and Black voters. The only support we could count on was DNC Political Director Clyde Williams, who respected and understood the value of the NNPA advertising campaign; White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett; and other advocates such as Congressional Black Caucus Chair Barbara Lee; House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; Democratic House Majority Whip James Clyburn; the Rev. Al Sharpton; the Rev. Jesse Jackson; and National Urban League President Marc Morial. However, the DNC staff followed their own ways — a little here, a little there, but not enough to make a significant difference and far too late. Reaching voters is a complicated exercise in this digital age, with the need to reach people everywhere they consume media. As the saying goes, all politics is local. And the fact is, on the grassroots level the people most likely to vote are those who use and trust the media that responds to the needs of their community on an ongoing basis — the Black Press (NNPA). Particularly for candidates at the state and local level, support of the community and its businesses send a tangible message to voters that the candidate is willing to invest resources in the communities they hope to represent. The candidate needs to ask for our vote, but in order to make that point effectively

Danny J. Bakewell Sr.

the outreach must come early and often, with backup resources. Without question, President Obama has the right vision and the best plan to move America forward, but the DNC must do better in helping him get his message out to the people, particularly Black people, to ensure that we are inspired to vote. The national committee must also value our vote. I believe, in reality, the democratic “shellacking” could have been avoided. The Obama administration, in a very short time, has had enormous successes — health care reform, the extension of unemployment benefits, and more — that touch lives in a substantial way. But who would know a story that hasn’t been effectively communicated? Democrats can’t expect to win if the message of former President Bill Clinton doesn’t ring clearly in their ears and brain. They also can’t expect to win if they don’t or won’t go into the black community and ask black people for their vote. When you look at the election, where Democrats advertised, went into the black community, campaigned and asked for our vote, we won. The two best examples of this fact are California and Massachusetts, however; there are a host of other critical states where candidates did not advertise, go into the Black community, or ask the Black voters to come out and vote, and they lost. Democrats can’t expect to win if at the end of the day the verdict for Black voters is ignoring them or taking them for granted. The strategy of “too little, too late” is not a viable and winning strategy.

Who Let the Ducks Out? BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST Congress recently convened for its lame-duck session. Some of the Democrats that will sit in the majority are not going to be coming back to Congress in January. Some of the Republicans, now in the minority, are licking their chops because they will occupy the majority in a few short weeks. There is work that must be done by this lame-duck Congress, but how much work will they do, really? Will the Democrats hold their majority power knowing it is really gone? Will Republicans, buoyed and buttressed by the likes of Sarah Palin and those who abuse tea in the name of their party, crow and bask their early month victory? Will the White House dig in or get downright penitent? Right now, following politics is better than watching a soap opera or a train wreck. Except for the fact that these politics affect all of us and all of our lives. One of the items on the agenda re the Bush tax cuts, which must be repealed. I am not sure why President Barack Obama is even considering compromise on this matter. Deficit hawks ought to join the President in eliminating tax cuts that mostly benefit the wealthy so that our tax coffers can be enhanced. Republicans want to keep the Bush tax cuts, though, because despite all their populism they are tools of the wealthy. With newfound Republican power, buttressed by lots of new infusions of money, the wealthy are likely to prevail. While the ducks are out, perhaps Obama will take a hard look at those who surround him. His trip to Asia flopped because he was poorly staffed. China picked at him and criticized Federal Reserve Board chairman Ben Bernanke’s plan to put money into the economy, even as it manipulates its own currency. While the damage may not be as bad as reported, Obama returned to the United States with the perception that he lost one, which is not a good thing. Indeed, he returns with the notion that he got whipped at home and is now whipped abroad. Who is staffing our president and looking ahead? Could this have been prevented? Will his new vulnerability be used against him when the ducks come out? The ducks, emboldened by Republican gains, are going to try

Julianne Malveaux Congressman Charles Rangel (DNY) for ethics violations. The jury will be made up of eight members of Congress, four from each party. Allegations against Rangel have been simmering for months, and there has been a long walk toward these hearings. Will the new majority judge Rangel more harshly than before? What does this mean for the Congressional Black Caucus? The dynamics of the lame-duck Congress put lots of things up for grabs. Rangel may well be part of the collateral damage of this seismic shift in Congress. There are issues that the lameduck Congress must address. Monies for Haiti must be released. Tax issues must be resolved, and the Bush tax cuts must be rebuffed. While the appetite for spending has been quelled by Republican victories, the real deal is that job creation remains an important issue. There are some issues that won’t be addressed, and there is some wrangling that is inevitable. The next week or so of lame-duck sessions will send a signal for the way Congress will act for the next two years. It is my hope that Democrats find themselves. All this flailing and uncertainty is interesting and wasteful drama when Democrats are in the majority, but wasteful posturing when Democrats are in the minority. If Democrats try to imitate Republicans instead of sticking to their principles, they will be even further marginalized than they were in the 2010 election. If, on the other hand, Dems get their act together and resist the Republican blast from the past, their need to “take our country back” (from whom, one might ask), political tension may have a positive conclusion. The ducks are out, and the next few weeks will be nothing more than challenging. Those of us who are simply observers need to be clear that we can make a difference. We can nudge our legislators to do the right thing, especially around the Bush tax cuts. The ducks don’t have to be lame unless they choose ineffectiveness. We can keep them honest.

Scanners and pat-downs upset airline passengers BY JOAN LOWY AND ADAM GOLDMAN WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly a week before the Thanksgiving holiday air travel crush, U.S. government air security officials struggled Monday to reassure rising numbers of fliers and airline workers outraged by new anti-terrorism screening procedures they consider invasive and harmful. Thanksgiving Day, a harvest festival, is the fourth Thursday in November in the United States. Across the U.S., passengers simmered over being forced to choose scans by full-body image detectors or probing pat-downs. Top federal security officials said that the procedures were safe and necessary sacrifices to ward off terror attacks. “It’s all about security,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said. “It’s all about everybody recognizing their role.” Despite officials’ insistence that they had taken care to prepare the American flying public, the flurry of criticism from private citizens to airline pilots’ groups suggested that Napolitano and other federal

officials had been caught off guard. At the San Diego airport, a software engineer posted an Internet blog item saying he had been ejected after being threatened with a fine and lawsuit for refusing a groin check after turning down a fullbody scan. The passenger, John Tyner, said he told a federal Transportation Security Administration worker, “If you touch my junk, I’m gonna have you arrested.” Tyner’s individual protest quickly became a web sensation, but questions also came from travel business groups, civil liberties activists and pilots, raising concerns both about the procedures themselves and about the possibility of delays caused by passengers reluctant to accept the new procedures. “Almost to a person, travel managers are concerned that TSA is going too far and without proper procedures and sufficient oversight,” said Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, an advocacy group representing corporate travel departments. “Travel managers are hearing from their travelers about this virtually on a daily basis.”

Jeffrey Price, an aviation professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver, said two trends are converging: the regular holiday security increases and the addition of body scanners and new heightened measures stemming from the recent attempted cargo bombings. Also, several airports are short-staffed, which will add to delays, Price said. Homeland Security and the TSA have moved forcefully to shift airport screening from familiar scanners to full-body detection machines. The new machines show the body’s contours on a computer stationed in a private room removed from the security checkpoints. A person’s face is never shown and the person’s identity is supposedly not known to the screener reviewing the computer images. Concerns about privacy and low-level radiation emitted by the machines have led some passengers to refuse screening. Under TSA rules, those who decline must submit to rigorous pat-down inspections that include checks of the See AIRLINE PASSENGERS, page 15

Rangel guilty: House ethics panel rules misconduct WASHINGTON (AP) — New York Rep. Charles Rangel, a longtime power in the U.S. House, violated its rules with financial misconduct, brought it discredit and will be punished, fellow lawmakers sitting as jurors ruled on Tuesday. Protesting the enduring stain on his four-decade congressional career, the 80year-old Democrat said he was treated

unfairly for “good faith mistakes.” His statement reflected the bitterness of an eightmonth career slide, starting with an unrelated ethics ruling that forced him from his coveted chairmanship of the taxwriting Ways and Means Committee. The conduct often cited by critics was his failure to report income to the IRS from a unit he owned in a Dominican Republic resort — showing the chairman in charge of tax legislation shortchanged the IRS. Rangel, a founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, remains a political kingpin in New York’s famed Harlem neighborhood and is unlikely to resign. He won re-election earlier this month. AG candidates closely monitor vote tally in race BY DON THOMPSON ASSOCIATED PRESS SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Both candidates in California’s only uncalled statewide race are accusing the other of trying to exert improper influence over the counting of hundreds of thousands

of remaining ballots. Democrat Kamala Harris retained a 30,000-vote lead Tuesday over Republican Steve Cooley in the race for state attorney general. That’s a lead of four-tenths of a percentage point, with nine million votes counted. Fewer than 800,000 ballots re-

Police: Oakland man killed by officers was unarmed OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 37-year-old parolee was carrying a small, silver scale — not a weapon — when Oakland officers fatally shot him during a foot chase last week, police said Friday. Police said two officers chasing Derrick Jones on Nov. 8 believed he had a weapon when he appeared to be reaching toward his waistband for a shiny metal object that turned out to be an electronic scale less than 1inch thick. One officer saw the object in Jones’ hand before police opened fire, authorities said. Jones’ death has prompted accusations of excessive force, with his friends and family saying the shooting was unjustified. The shooting came just days after the sentencing of former transit police officer Johannes Mehserle, who fatally shot another unarmed

man on an Oakland train platform on New Year’s Day 2009. Mehserle’s two-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter sparked protests by supporters of the victim, Oscar Grant, saying the punishment was too light. On Nov. 11, about 100 demonstrators for Jones and Grant marched from a barber shop Jones’ owned to the same train station where Grant was killed, shutting it down to passengers for an hour. A smaller protest with dozens of demonstrators was held Friday afternoon. Officer Jeffrey Thomason, a police spokesman, said Friday that Jones was also carrying marijuana in a glass jar inside a pocket when he was shot. main to be counted before Nov. 30. The greatest scrutiny is being placed on Los Angeles County, which has 93,000 uncounted ballots. Both campaigns have election monitors watching as county officials compare voters’ signatures and addresses with voter rolls. Each side has asserted the other is trying to unfairly pressure officials as they decide whether a ballot will be counted or discarded. The complaints evoke the bruising campaign between Cooley, who is Los Angeles County’s district attorney, and Harris, who holds the same post in San Francisco. “This is sniping as usual that only comes around when the votes are close enough that the race could be affected by the qualification or disqualification of ballots,” said Kathay Feng, executive director of California Common Cause and a member of the Election Protection watchdog network. Cooley’s campaign sent three complaint letters since Friday to Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters Dean Logan. The first and second asserted that county employees were meeting privately with Harris’ monitors and being lax in comparing signatures on ballot envelopes with voter registration cards. The third said some employees were spending less than one second comparing signatures, and asked that they be required to spend at least 10 seconds making sure signatures match

between ballots and registration rolls. Harris’ campaign sent no letters, but alleged in statements Sunday and Monday that Cooley’s monitors were being too aggressive with county employees in an attempt to toss out as many ballots as possible. Cooley trails in the Democraticleaning county by a margin of 53 percent to 39 percent. Jones’ family, said Friday that he is surprised and suspicious that it took so long for the police to release the information. “All I know is that Mr. Jones did not point any item at the police, did not put his hands in his waistband and he had no weapon,” Burris said. “And the fact that he had marijuana, so what? None of that justifies being shot and killed.”

He said he is confident his employees aren’t letting either side unfairly influence the process. Spokesmen for both candidates said procedures have improved this week since the complaints began flying. Private meetings have stopped and signatures are getting closer scrutiny, said Cooley spokesman Kevin Spillane.

“They deny basically everything that we say ... but they have modified their procedures without admitting there were problems,” he said. Cooley’s monitors aren’t behaving so aggressively, said Harris spokesman Brian Brokaw. Each campaign has about a dozen volunteer monitors taking shifts watching the ballot counting, which will continue seven days a week until

the tally is completed. Harris is relying heavily on volunteers from labor unions, while Cooley’s camp put out a weekend call for more volunteers through local Republican party officials. Both spokesmen predicted it will be at least next week, and possibly next month, before enough votes are counted to declare a winner.

Rangel’s downfall, in part, came in the way he solicited money for a New York college center designed as a monument to himself. There also was his decade of misleading annual disclosures of his income and assets and his use of a subsidized New York apartment — designated for residential use — as a campaign office. new policies. Napolitano wrote an op-ed column in USA Today insisting that the body scanners used at many airports were safe and any images were viewed by federal airport workers in private settings. Napolitano later said in a news conference at Ronald Reagan National Airport that she regretted the growing opposition to moves by the federal government to make flying safer. But she said the changes were necessary to deal with emerging terrorist threats such as a Nigerian man’s alleged attempt to blow up a jetliner bound from Amsterdam to Detroit last Christmas Day using hard-to-detect explosives. Authorities allege that the explosives were hidden in the suspect’s underwear. There are some 300 full-body scanners now operational in 60 U.S. airports. nation for the upcoming written report. The conviction was a fresh setback for Democrats who lost control of the House to the GOP in the midterm elections, support for Republican candidates’ assertions of bad conduct. At his one-day trial on Monday, Rangel was reduced to pleading for a postponement — arguing that his lawyers abandoned him after he paid them some $2 million but could afford no more. The panel rejected his request, and Rangel walked out of the proceeding. “How can anyone have confidence in the decision of the ethics subcommittee when I was deprived of due process rights, right to counsel and was not even in the room?” Rangel complained on Tuesday. “I can only hope that the full committee will treat me more fairly and take into account my entire 40 years of service to the Congress before making any decisions on sanctions.” He called the panel’s findings “unprecedented” because there was no rebuttal evidence. He complained that the rejection of his appeal for more time violated “the basic constitutional right to counsel.” Rangel, echoing a statement he made in August in a speech to the House, added, “Any failings in my conduct were the result of good faith mistakes.” He said they were caused by “sloppy and careless record keeping but were not criminal or corrupt.” New York Gov.-elect Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who attended Rangel’s fundraiser in August while campaigning to clean up New York politics, said, “It’s obviously a sad situation to experience.” “It’s important that people have full faith in the integrity in public service, so it's painful to watch,” Cuomo said Tuesday at a press event near Rochester. “But we’ll see what happens at the end of the process.” The eight-member jury panel

AIRLINE PASSENGERS inside of travelers’ thighs and buttocks. The American Civil Liberties Union has denounced the machines as a “virtual strip search.” Concerns about both procedures are not limited to the U.S. In Germany over the weekend, organized protesters stripped off their clothes in airports to voice their opposition to full-body scans. Douglas R. Laird, a former security director for Northwest Airlines, said it’s the resistance to these measures that will cause the most delays. The new enhanced pat-downs, an alternative to body scanners, take more time — about 2 minutes compared with a 30-second scan. Delays could multiply if many travelers opt for a pat-down or contest certain new procedures. Beyond the scanning process, passengers will also be subject to greater scrutiny of their luggage and personal identification and stricter enforcement of long-standing rules like the ban on carry-on liquids over 3 ounces (85.05 grams)1001. was unanimous on most charges against Rangel. Members split 4-4 on a charge that he violated a ban on gifts because he was to have an office — and storage of his papers — at the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York. Two counts charging him with misuse of Congress’ free mail privilege were merged into one. And the panel voted 7-1 on a final charge that he had brought discredit on the House. No breakdown was given on who voted no. The charges said the solicitation for the Rangel Center targeted foundations and businesses that were seeking official action from the House or had interests that might be substantially affected by Rangel’s congressional conduct. However, Rangel was not accused of using his influence to pass or defeat legislation. During Monday’s trial proceeding, the chief counsel for the House

ethics committee, Blake Chisam, told the jury that Rangel could have received permission to solicit nonprofit foundations. However, he could not have used congressional stationery and staff as he was found to have done. Rangel had previously acknowledged some of the charges, including submission of 10 years’ worth of incomplete and inaccurate annual statements disclosing his assets and income. He also admitted he initially did not report his rental income from a unit he owned at the Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic. An apartment in Harlem's Lennox Terrace complex housed the Rangel for Congress and National Leadership PAC political committees, although the lease terms said the unit was for living purposes only. Chisam had told the jury that other tenants were evicted at an increasing rate for violating the same lease terms.

Susan Burton Selected as Top 10 CNN Hero BY SHIRLEY HAWKINS CONTRIBUTING WRITER Some who are familiar with Watts resident Susan Burton know she is a woman of vision, courage and determination. The founder of A New Way of Life Reentry Project, a nonprofit agency that aids formerly incarcerated women, Burton has an organization that has assisted roughly 500 women with housing, counseling and social services. The agency also helps women maintain sobriety and reunite with their families while helping them to regain a sense of dignity and self-esteem. Burton, a former inmate, was recently honored for her efforts by the NAACP and Harvard University. And Burton was selected from thousands of nominees as one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes for 2010. The winner will be chosen by popular vote — the last day to vote on the CNN website is Nov.18. The candidates accruing the most votes will receive an award of $125,000 to continue their nonprofit work.

Burton and the other candidates’ life stories will be featured in “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute, to air on the CNN channel on Thanksgiving evening on Nov. 25. It’s been a long and arduous journey from prison to national recognition for Burton, who grew up in the projects in East Los Angeles, suffered physical abuse as a child, and eventually dropped out of school. Roughly 30 years ago, Burton spiraled into a world of crack cocaine and despair after her son — who was 5 — died after being accidentally hit by a car. Burton said she was incarcerated six times. “I was black, poor, and a person with a criminal history, she said. It was a Burton’s trip to a rehab facility more than a decade ago that helped her eventually break free from her addiction. Burton was aware that there was a need for former prisoners to receive social services, support and housing. Without proper help and guidance, she knew that many former women inmates would slide

back into the world of drugs or be tempted by the streets, thus contributing to their return behind bars. Aiming to make a difference, Burton made a personal commitment to help formerly incarcerated women in need — eventually purchasing a home and founding the organization in 1998. “A New Way of Life took off right away, said Burton. A New Way of Life, which aids about 50 women a year, has expanded to include five houses in South Los Angeles, Compton and Watts. After receiving counseling and support, many of the women are reunited with their families and children. Burton said that A New Way of Life continues to fill a critical and growing need in the lives of exinmates. And word about the agency’s services has spread in prisons throughout the state. Burton and her staff are sent nearly 70 letters a month from inmates — both male and female — seeking help from her nonprofit agency. Some of Burton’s biggest supporters live in Watts.

Susan Burton Mildred Harper, 86, said that Burton is doing tremendous work. “I’ve volunteered with her organization since the beginning, said Harper, president of the Neighborhood Watch block club, who has lived in Watts since 1960. “I get Susan to speak at different organizations in the city. I admire the work she is doing to help women turn their lives around. Burton said she is still stunned and humbled to be nominated as one

of CNN’s heroes. “Just being nominated as one of the top 10 heroes by CNN is huge, she said. “It makes me realize that the work I’ve done over the years is finally being recognized and supported. I am grateful for A New Way of Life, which has allowed me to use my life to create a better world for others. To find out about A New Way of Life’s programs, visit www.anewwayoflife.org.
