CA attorney general race still too close to call BY GREG RISLING ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES—Prosecutors from California's two most prominent cities, who both ran bruising campaigns, were locked in a dead heat Wednesday in their race for attorney general, neither ready to declare victory a day after the polls had closed. San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris led Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley by fewer than 15,000 votes, or less than a quarter of a percentage point, with all precincts reporting and tens of thousands of provisional and late absentee ballots still to be counted. That being the case, it could be weeks before a winner is determined. Cooley had a comfortable lead in early returns Tuesday, but Harris chipped away at the margin and had overtaken him by Wednesday. Cooley had originally scheduled, then canceled, a news conference for Wednesday, presumably to talk about his election victory. Although she pulled ahead Wednesday, Harris wasn’t willing to go that far — at least not yet. “All the movement in this race showed we were surging late and we feel those absentee ballots will be reflective of that late momentum,” said Brian Brokaw, a Harris cam-
paign spokesman. “We are incredibly optimistic.” If Harris wins, she would not only cap a Democratic sweep of seven statewide offices, but also would be the first woman and first AfricanAmerican to be elected the state’s top law enforcement officer. It’s a position that because of California’s size and stature has national influence. Cooley received the support of many law enforcement organizations and appeared ahead in polls leading up to Tuesday’s vote. However, Harris was aided by a fundraising appearance by President Obama and spent a lot of time on Cooley’s Southern California turf, working to gain name recognition. Apparently it paid off. While Cooley did well in Republican strongholds such as Orange and San Diego counties, as well as rural areas, Harris took Los Angeles County by a 14point margin. She also trounced her opponent in most counties ringing her home base of San Francisco. Cooley’s spokesman, Kevin Spillane, said although the race was still too close to call he was encouraged that the Los Angeles prosecutor had beaten Harris in 40 of California’s 58 counties. “The race is not going to be decided until certification and it’s going to be by a very narrow mar-

The Republican State Leadership Committee, funded by tobacco, insurance and medical companies,
put more than $1 million into a 30second ad that accused Harris of being unsupportive of the death penalty and featured a video clip of the mother of slain San Francisco police Officer Isaac Espinoza. Harris didn’t seek the execution of Espinoza’s killer in 2004, and he
is now serving a life term. However, she has maintained she would enforce state law in capital punishment cases if she is elected. Cooley was criticized for accepting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from people who were being investigated by his office. He also kept contributions from a Republican fundraiser convicted four years later of federal campaign finance fraud. Cooley said he properly reported all the gifts and contributions and denied any conflict. Cooley supports the death penalty and is perceived as tougher on crime, although he’s known for his moderate stance toward California’s three-strikes law. He’s been credited for creating a public corruption unit that recently ensnared leaders of several nondescript suburbs around Los Angeles. They have been charged with such crimes as misappropriating millions in public funds, conflict of interest and taking bribes. Harris has been recognized as a reformer for trying to improve laws aimed at social problems that help lead to crime. During her campaign, she also rallied opposition to Proposition 23, which sought to suspend California’s 2006 global warming law. The measure was rejected by voters.?

NEWS IN AFRICA Somali-American premier wins vote of confidence BY SALAD DUHUL ASSOCIATED PRESS MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somalia’s parliament approved the country’s prime minister-designate on Sunday, the parliamentary speaker said, ending weeks of political tensions over the issue. Lawmakers voted by a show of hands 297-92 in favor of Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, a SomaliAmerican, said Sharif Hassan Sheik Aden, speaker of the transitional parliament. Mohamed was nominated on Oct. 14 by President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed but the vote on his nomination was delayed several times because of a disagreement between the president and the speaker over procedure. The president wanted lawmakers to vote by a show of hands, while the speaker preferred a secret ballot. Now Mohamed is expected to name a Cabinet in the coming weeks, but some Somalis do not think he will be able to make a difference in the country. “Somalia is not America,” Amina Nur, a mother of seven children, told The Associated Press referring to Mohamed’s time spent in the U.S. Mohamed, a former Somali
diplomat, worked in the Somali Embassy in Washington from 1985 to 1988, according to the government’s website. He has taught conflict resolution and leadership skills at Erie Community College in western New York and has a master’s degree in political science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, according to his resume. “Like many overseas Somalis that came from Western countries after the collapse of the government in 1991 and are now parliamentarians and government officials, he doesn’t know the difficult situation of the country and cannot lead an effective Cabinet in the terms of the setting a comprehensive security plan to combat al-Shabab and terrorists,” Nur said. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab and allied Islamic militants have been trying for three years to overthrow the government. The militants control much of the capital, Mogadishu, and southern Somalia. A former governor of one of Somalia’s southern regions, Qasim Mohamed Nur, said the new prime minister may succeed where his predecessors have failed because he does not carry any political baggage and is from the country's south, where alShabab holds sway. “I think if he gets support of the

Zimbabweans wrap up public constitution meetings HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Public meetings to draft a new Zimbabwean constitution have now concluded after three months of gatherings. Police say rival party supporters jostled and traded insults at some of the final meetings held in and around Harare on Saturday and Sunday. The former opposition party, now in a coalition with President Robert Mugabe, says one of its supporters was severely wounded after being stabbed in violence linked to the weekend meetings. Mugabe says a constitutional referendum will be held in March. It is unclear if the deadline will be met. The governing coalition was formed after disputed, violencemarred 2008 elections. But it is deeply divided, undermining its job of ushering in a new constitution and preparing for general elections.
Ugandan newspaper again publishes list of gay men BY GODFREY OLUKYA ASSOCIATED PRESS KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A controversial newspaper in Kampala published photos, names and home addresses of gay Ugandans on Monday — the second time the
paper has done so — prompting a rights group to seek a legal injunction against the publication. The paper’s managing editor, Giles Muhame, said he plans to continue publishing photos of gay men in order to “help them live responsible lives.” Earlier this month the paper — called Rolling Stone but not linked to the American magazine of the same name — published a front page story featuring a list of what the paper said were Uganda’s 100 ”top” homosexuals. Rights activists said the story prompted attacks against at least four gay Ugandans. Sexual Minorities Uganda has asked the country’s highest court to issue an injunction against publishing the faces of gays in future editions. “We now live in fear,” said Julian Onzeima, the group’s coordinator. “The Rolling Stone paper has led to people turning against us.” Gays in Uganda say they have faced a year of attacks and harassment since a lawmaker introduced a bill in October 2009 that would impose the death penalty for some homosexual acts and life in prison for others. The bill has not come up for a vote. The legislation was drawn up following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy they say allows gays to become heterosexual. The bill became political poison after international condemnation, and many Christian leaders have denounced it.

LAPD: Gang feud prompted shot that killed boy, 5 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Police detectives on Tuesday sought the public’s help in finding a pair of suspects who opened fire into a backyard caught in a gang turf war, killing a 5-year-old boy as he showed off his Halloween costume. The suspects believed members of a rival gang lived at the boy’s South Los Angeles home, but the family has no gang ties, Detective Chris Barling told The Associated Press. Two gangs — the Kitchen Crips and Swan Bloods — have been battling over the area, detectives said. The boy, Aaron Shannon Jr., died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center on Monday night, a day after he was shot, police said. He had been

that just tears at my heart,” police Capt. Dennis Kato told KTTV-TV. The boy’s uncle, Terrence Shannon, 27, was hit in the wrist and his grandfather William Shannon, 56, was hit in the left leg. Neither of their injuries were considered serious. His grandfather has said Aaron had run into the back yard to flex his mock muscles for pictures in his Spider-Man costume before he left for a party. Two men, who police have described only as black and in their 20s, walked into the alley. William Shannon said he nodded to the men, but had never seen them before, and then they started firing. The city is offering $75,000 for information leading to suspects.

A group of protestors gathered months ago in light of an involuntary manslaughter conviction against Johannes Mehserle, the white police officer who shot Oscar Grant, an African American, on New Year’s Day 2009 as he lay unarmed on a train platform. They felt Mehserle should have had a stiffer sentence. Mehserle is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 5. The local community will have to wait and see what reactions will be to the sentencing, if it isn’t postponed. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES — A judge is being urged to sentence a former transit police officer to 14 years in prison for killing an unarmed man at an Oakland train station. A group called the Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant says it has about 500 postcards and letters urging a judge in Los Angeles to give Johannes Mehserle the maximum sentence. Spokeswoman Caro (KEHR’-
oh) Gomez says the cards was going to be presented at the judge’s office Wednesday afternoon. The ex-Bay Area Rapid Transit officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for killing Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day 2009. Mehserle testified that he wanted to shock Grant with a stun gun but pulled his handgun by mistake. His trial was moved to Los Angeles because of intense media coverage and racial tensions. Mehserle is white and Grant was black.

Marijuana legalization measure loses in California BY LISA LEFF ASSOCIATED PRESS California voters declined to make their trendsetting state the nation's first to legalize marijuana use and sales, heeding warnings of legal chaos and that pot smokers would get behind the wheel and show up to work while high. The legalization effort was losing by nine percentage points with more than two-thirds of precincts reporting. Backers showed support for the measure by gathering outside the campaign’s headquarters to watch returns come in — some of them lighting up joints to mark the occasion. Supporters of Proposition 19 blamed Tuesday’s outcome on the conservative leanings of older voters who participate in midterm elections. They also acknowledged that young voters had not turned out in sufficient numbers to secure victory, but said they were ready to try again in two years. “It’s still a historic moment in this very long struggle to end decades of failed marijuana prohibition,” said Stephen Gutwillig, California director
for the Drug Policy Project. “Unquestionably, because of Proposition 19, marijuana legalization initiatives will be on the ballot in a number of states in 2012, and California is in the mix.” Tim Rosales, who managed the No on 19 campaign, scoffed at that attitude from the losing side. “If they think they are going to be back in two years, they must be smoking something,” he said. “This is a state that just bucked the national trend and went pretty hard on the Democratic side, but yet in the same vote opposed Prop 19. I think that says volumes as far as where California voters are on this issue.” The campaign pitted the state’s political and law enforcement establishment against determined activists. Images of marijuana leaves and smashed-up cars and school buses appeared in dueling ads during the campaign. In a sign of what a tough sell it was, an exit poll conducted for The Associated Press showed opposition cutting across gender and racial lines, as well as income and education levels.
The ballot measure lost in the state’s vaunted marijuana-growing region known as the “Emerald Triangle” of Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity counties. Many in the region feared the system they have created would be taken over by corporations or lose its purpose. Proponents pitched it as a sensible, though unprecedented, experiment that would provide tax revenue for the cash-strapped state, dent the drug-related violence in Mexico by causing pot prices to plummet, and reduce marijuana arrests that they say disproportionately target minority youth. In the weeks leading to the election, federal officials said they planned to continue enforcing laws making marijuana possession and sales illegal and were considering suing to overturn the California initiative if voters approved it. “Today, Californians recognized that legalizing marijuana will not make our citizens healthier, solve California’s budget crisis, or reduce drug related violence in Mexico,” White House Drug Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske said.
AP Photo by Noah Berger
Supporters of Proposition 19, an initiative to legalize marijuana, watch election results in Oakland, Calif., on Nov. 2, 2010. Early returns showed the ballot initiative failing. Voters in three other states cast ballots on medical marijuana-related measures. In South Dakota, voters rejected for the second time a measure to legalize marijuana for medical use — a step taken by California in 1996 and 13 other states since. Oregon voters refused to expand their state’s medical marijuana program to create a network of state-licensed nonprofit dispensaries where patients could have purchased the drug. A medical marijuana measure on Arizona’s ballot was too close to call
early Wednesday. California’s marijuana proposal would have allowed adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of pot, consume it in nonpublic places as long as no children were present, and grow it in small private plots. It also would have authorized local governments to permit commercial pot cultivation, as well as the sale and use of marijuana at licensed establishments. Associated Press writer David Crary in New York contributed to this story.

suits in court, and promised in church sermons he would not let the legal troubles prevent him from doing its work. But he did not deny the allegations until he filed a legal response Monday saying each of the “claims of sexual misconduct are not true.” The men, who were 17 and 18 at the time, say Long abused his spiritual authority to lure them into trysts with cars, jewelry and cash. Their attorney B.J. Bernstein said she doesn’t have much physical evidence backing up the complaints, but that she plans to subpoena records from Long that will show he traveled with the young men to New Zealand and elsewhere. Bernstein declined to comment because she had not yet received the response. Bishop, though, said in the four separate documents that he often encouraged his New Birth Missionary Church members to call him “daddy” and that some even called him “grandaddy,” but that the term was a sign of respect. The bishop also said in the documents that he has long shared rooms with some of his church members, and that his parishioners often hug him. And while he admitted to giving the plaintiffs gifts, he said he often provided many members of his church with financial assistance. The bishop is a father of four who has been an outspoken opponent of gay marriage and his church has counseled gay members to become straight. But the TV preacher’s empire was threatened in September when the four men filed the lawsuits. Two of the young men say he targeted them after they enrolled in the church’s LongFellows Youth Academy, a program that taught teens about sexual, physical and financial discipline. The other two — one of whom
attended a satellite church in Charlotte, N.C. — have made similar claims. Local and state authorities have declined to investigate because Georgia’s age of consent is 16. Gay bullying and suicides hit black community BY CYRIL JOSH BARKER SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE NEW YORK AMSTERDAM NEWS Recent anti-gay attacks and suicides among gay youth have ignited a conversation about a problem that those in the LGBTQ community say is nothing new. As the case of what many are calling one of the most brutal antigay crimes unfolds, three of the 11 suspects accused of participating in an attack in an abandoned house in the Bronx have been set free. Brian Cepeda, 17; Bryan Almonte, 16; and Brian Cepeda, 17, were all cleared on charges after the Bronx district attorney’s office said there was a lack of evidence. Meanwhile, one of the latest suicides took place in the city when 26-year-old Black gay youth activist Joseph Jefferson took his own life recently. Jefferson worked with HIV/AIDS charities and was an assistant to promoters of Black LGBTQ events. “I could not bear the burden of living as a gay man of color in a world grown cold and hateful
towards those of us who live and love differently than the so-called ‘social mainstream,’ ” Jefferson posted on his Facebook page the day he killed himself. Those in the Black gay community had planned on celebrating Jefferson’s life at the LGBT Center. The event is being put on by the organization Gay Men of African Decent. Funeral services for Jefferson will be held in Brooklyn at Pone Funeral Home on Sunday. To address the issue of bullying and suicides, several LGBT organizations were planning to rally at Washington Square Park. Recently, dozens of LGBTQ youths of color, along with several elected officials, gathered on the steps of City Hall to speak out against anti-gay bullying and the recent suicides. The rally, led by the organization Fabulous Independent Educated Radicals for Community Empowerment (FIERCE), declared October as LGBTQ Youth Empowerment Month and also addressed the need for a 24-hour LGBTQ youth center in the West
Village. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, openly gay City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and gay City Councilman Daniel Dromm support the themed month. “We are thrilled to have the mayor and Speaker Quinn and other elected officials’ support of LGBTQ Youth Empowerment Month,” said John Blasco, organizer of FIERCE. “It is crucial that we continue working together to create even more spaces for LGBTQ youth to take leadership in the communities and in the fight for justice.” At the press conference, several LGBTQ youth told stories of abuse and abandonment they had experienced in the city by being who they are. Gay youth of all racial backgrounds have a higher rate of suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, because they feel conflicted or ashamed about their sexuality. Family members often throw many gay teens out of their homes when they come out. “We chose empowerment because to us, empowerment means

One of the most recent and notable cases involving a Black gay man occurred in 2006, when Michael Sandy was killed after being hit by a car while he was try-
ing to escape attackers in Brooklyn on Plumb Beach. After meeting a man in an online gay chat room, Sandy and the man arranged a meeting. When Sandy arrived, he was confronted by four men who robbed him and chased him onto the highway. Sandy was then hit by an oncoming vehicle and died from brain injuries. Recently, City Councilman Lew Fidler dedicated a bench on Plumb Beach in honor of Sandy.

New nickname for Lakers’ new bench: the renegades
AP Photo/Lori Shepler
Los Angeles Lakers point guard Shannon Brown (12) and Los Angeles Lakers small forward Matt Barnes (9) grab a rebound over the Golden State Warriors during the second half of an NBA basketball game in Los Angeles, Oct. 31. The Lakers won 107 to 83. BY GREG BEACHAM AP SPORTS WRITER LOS ANGELES (AP) — This must be another coaching record for Phil Jackson. Just one week into the regular season, he has already minted a catchy nickname for the Los Angeles Lakers’ revamped group of reserves. Meet the Renegades. They’re the reason the twotime NBA champions might be a whole lot better this season. Newcomers Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff have joined returnees Shannon Brown and Sasha Vujacic on a bench that already looks exponentially more reliable than last season’s collection of castoffs and underachievers. What’s more, they’re still planning to add injured Luke Walton and sixth man Lamar Odom, currently a fill-in starter. “I like the way this group is coming together, Jackson said. “They have the potential to be very special. The Lakers were top-heavy during their two title runs, but this team appears to have enviable balance.
The unimpressive likes of Adam Morrison, Jordan Farmar and DJ Mbenga have been replaced by three tough NBA veterans with 29 combined seasons of experience. Blake, Barnes and Ratliff are former starters who swallowed their egos for the chance to join Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol in another championship chase. “Our bench is very solid, very solid, Bryant said after Sunday’s 107-83 win over Golden State, moving the Lakers to 3-0. “They rarely make mistakes. They stay within the structure, and they play well together. They also add hunger: None of the three newcomers has a championship ring, and all three looked on in envy when the nine returning Lakers received the spoils of last season’s toils during last week's ring ceremony. “Everybody knows that’s the reason we’re here, and that’s the reason I chose the Lakers, said Barnes, the hard-nosed swingman and longtime Kobe antagonist who is becoming a confidante to the twotime finals MVP. See LAKERS, page 24

Vikings mired in Moss mess BY JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP SPORTS WRITER MINNEAPOLIS — Brad Childress and the Minnesota Vikings have another big mess on their hands. Randy Moss’ abrupt departure was just the latest in what has been a season long on drama and short on success for a 2-5 team that started with Super Bowl aspirations. From Brett Favre’s late arrival to training camp, through an NFL investigation into improper messages allegedly sent by the quarterback a few years ago and now with Moss’ release, the Vikings have been plagued by distraction and now their season is in danger of spinning com-
pletely out of control. “Every time I come to work I see the news trucks sitting out there,” linebacker Ben Leber said. “I feel like something is going on. I roll in and keep my ears open.” It all started with another summer-long courtship of Favre, who again considered retirement after leading the Vikings to the NFC title game in January. Childress sent three of his highest-profile players to Favre's home in Mississippi in August to convince the gray-haired quarterback to make one more run. Favre has struggled on and off the field this season. His 69.8 quarterback rating ranks 29th in the NFL and he has thrown 11 interceptions
Magic expresses interest in role with Dolphins MIAMI (AP) — Magic Johnson says he would be interested in becoming the Miami Dolphins’ latest celebrity limited partner, although his priority is to help Los Angeles get an NFL team. Johnson said he recently met with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to discuss business, but he offered no details about the conversation. “I like Stephen Ross a lot,” Johnson said Friday while attending the Miami Heat’s game against Orlando. “Of course if he wants me to do business with him, we’re going to do business together. If I can’t get something done in L.A. and if he asks me to join the Dolphins, would I? Of course I would.” Johnson attended the Dolphins’ home game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since taking over the Dolphins before last season, Ross has brought aboard as limitAP Photo by Seth Wenig ed partners the Williams sisters, Gloria and Basketball legend turned entrepreneur Magic Emilio Estefan, Fergie Johnson tours the Sports Museum of America in and Marc Anthony. As New York, Nov. 21, 2008. Johnson was there to part of Ross’ attempt to promote his new book, “32 Ways to be a boost attendance, the Champion in Business.” Dolphins now have a VIP entrance and South Beach-style club at games. “He’s a smart businessman, and he’s a fun businessman,” Johnson said. “See, that’s the difference between a lot of owners. He understands marketing and making it fun, a great atmosphere. “But my No. 1 priority is to bring the NFL back to L.A.” Johnson recently sold his small ownership stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.
after being picked off just seven times all of last season. He is also in the middle of a league investigation into allegations that he sent a game-day hostess inappropriate messages while both worked for the New York Jets in 2008. Then Childress, with injuries to Pro Bowl receivers Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin, sent a third-round draft pick to New England on Oct. 6 for Moss, a player with a long history of clashing with management and coaches. “Pull out your number 84 jerseys, man,” Moss said at the time to a euphoric Vikings fan base. “I think this is going to be a fun ride.” More like a stunningly brief one. This ride didn't last much longer than an inexperienced cowboy atop a prized rodeo bull, and it may have inflicted just as much damage. The latest headline-grabbing incident has put Childress in the crosshairs. Owner Zygi Wilf declined to comment through a team spokesman and there is speculation that the coach, despite signing a five-year extension last season, could be in trouble if things continue to crumble. “That would be somebody else’s call completely,” Childress said on Monday. “I have to worry about this football team next week playing the Arizona Cardinals. That’s plenty for me.” Childress has not seen eye-toeye with Favre for much of the past two seasons, and Harvin became the latest player to question the game plan when he remarked about the lack of halftime adjustments on Sunday in the 28-18 loss to New England. The clumsy way the Moss ordeal unfolded has only increased the criticism. Childress spoke to reporters on Monday afternoon, but did not mention his intention to cut Moss during an extended discussion of the receiver’s performance. He presumably wanted to speak to his team about it first, and he told his players during a meeting right after his news conference. That left a smattering of players, primarily Leber, to break the news to the media and try to explain the organization’s motives. “I don’t know what’s been going on privately or if there’s been stuff going on behind the scenes, something I’m not aware of,” Leber said. “I’m not sure what the motivation was or what they’re thinking, but it certainly is a surprise when you think you trade for a guy a couple weeks ago and then release him a few weeks later.”

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick hugs Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss after New England’s 28-18 win in an NFL football game in Foxborough, Mass., Oct. 31. Leber wasn’t the only one scratching his head. “Randy is a good friend of mine, it caught me off guard as well,” left tackle Bryant McKinnie tweeted. “But this is not (in) the players control.” Even Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher called it “quite unique.” “I don’t know any more about it than what you know, but you don't give up a third-round pick for somebody to help you win and then just release him,” Fisher said. Childress didn’t release a statement until nearly six hours after the news first broke. The Vikings were off on Tuesday and he was unavailable to discuss the decision, including the motives behind it and whether he consulted Wilf, who signed off on adding about $5 million to the payroll when they traded for Moss. “I think it comes down to the bigger picture of what’s going on in Minnesota as a whole, and everything is going haywire,” former quarterback turned NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner said on Tuesday. “And I don’t think anybody really knows what’s going on.” Childress is next scheduled to address the media on Wednesday afternoon, which only prolongs the situation and forces players to be confronted with questions about it for another full day while preparing to play the Cardinals on Sunday. Moss certainly deserves some of the blame as well. He had 13 catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns in four games with the Vikings, never emerging as the dynamic deep threat that he was during his first seven-season stint in Minnesota. He appeared to give up on a pass from Favre near the goal line against the Patriots, acted petulantly in the locker room and delivered a bizarre postgame rant in which he literally saluted Bill Belichick and his former Patriots teammates and criticized the Vikings coaches for not
listening to his advice. “It’s kind of shocking, but at the same time the game of football is a business,” safety Tyrell Johnson said. “It’s about what you’re doing, how you contribute to the team no matter who you are. Really it’s about winning football games. Not saying he didn’t do a great job. I think he did. Honestly I’m not in a management position.” But the Vikings couldn’t say they were surprised by Moss’ antics. It’s an act that has played twice now in Minnesota and once each in Oakland and New England. “I think that a whole bunch of things are going wrong in Minnesota, and I look at it as a situation where it’s almost like they’re just trying to stop the bleeding a little bit,” Warner said. “So many distractions, so many things going on, so many things going the wrong direction for them.” Moss hit the waiver wire on Tuesday, according to two people with knowledge of his status. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information publicly. The other 31 teams have until 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday to put in a claim on him and what’s left of a contract that guaranteed him $6.4 million this year. The team with the worst record will win the claim, with winless Buffalo having the first shot at him. If no team claims him, Moss will be eligible to sign a new deal with any team and the Vikings would still be on the hook for nearly $4 million in remaining salary. “I bet every player in the building would come in my back door and say, ‘Go get him, go get him,’ ” Fisher said. AP Sports Writers Dave Campbell in Eden Prairie, Minn., Joseph White and Howard Fendrich in Washington, D.C., and Teresa M. Walker, in Nashville, Tenn., contributed to this story.

RESULTS ARE IN MID-TERM ELECTIONS - NOVEMBER 2, 2010 N AT I O N A L Republicans Win Solid House Majority BY JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS Associated Press WASHINGTON — Republicans rolled up historic gains to seize control of the House on Tuesday, as voters disenchanted with the economy, President Barack Obama and government dealt a strong rebuke to Democrats in every corner of the country. The GOP ousted Democratic freshmen and influential veterans, including some considered safe just weeks ago. Republicans piled up their biggest House gains since they added 80 seats in 1938: By early Wednesday, they had netted 60 formerly Democratic seats and led in four more. The GOP victory eclipsed the 54-seat pickup by the so-called “revolution” that retook the House in 1994 for the first time in 40 years and the 56-seat Republican gain in 1946. Ascendant Republican leaders quickly pledged to heed the message of angry voters who they acknowledged were rejecting what both parties had to offer. “Across the country right now, we are witnessing a repudiation of Washington, a repudiation of big government, and a repudiation of politicians who refuse to listen to the people,” said Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, in line to become the next speaker. With the realities of divided government sinking in, Obama called Boehner to say he looked forward to working with him and the GOP “to find common ground, move the country forward and get things done for the American people,” the White House said. Boehner told the president he wanted to collaborate on voters’ top priorities, creating jobs and cutting spending. “That’s what they expect,” the 10-term Republican said. Licking their wounds, House Democrats defended their legislative record and campaign strategy and said they would try to compromise with the GOP. “The outcome of the election does not diminish the work we have done for the American people,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, the first woman to hold the post. “We must all strive to find common ground to support the middle class, create jobs, reduce the deficit and move our nation forward.” By midmorning Wednesday, the GOP had captured 239 seats and was leading for four more, while Democrats had won 184 and led for eight. All 435 seats were on the ballot. Democrats had only picked up three Republican seats, and had lost some of their most powerful members, including Rep. John Spratt in South Carolina, the 14-termer who heads the Budget Committee, Rep. Ike Skelton in Missouri, the Armed Services Committee chairman, and House Transportation Committee chairman Rep. James Oberstar of Minnesota, an 18term veteran. Republicans defeated three dozen Democrats in districts won by Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the 2008 presidential campaign, as voters in exit polls expressed anxiety about the economy, disillusion with Obama and tea party-fueled distaste for government. G O P gains were particularly pronounced in the Rust Belt, with the party racking up two wins in
Indiana, five each in Ohio and Pennsylvania, three in Illinois, and two in Michigan. They scored key victories from Maryland to Washington and broke House Democrats’ monopolies in New England and in New York City — by defeating Rep. Carol Shea Porter in New Hampshire and Rep. Mike McMahon on Staten Island. Among the victims were Ohio Rep. Steve Driehaus, Reps. Suzanne Kosmas of Florida, Frank Kratovil of Maryland and Tom Perriello of Virginia, first-termers who backed key elements of Obama’s agenda — the president even campaigned for Perriello — and were savaged for it by their Republican rivals. But those who stressed their independence from their party, like Reps. Glenn Nye of Virginia, Travis Childers of Mississippi and Bobby Bright of Alabama, also went down. Some old bulls also fell, including nine-term Rep. Earl Pomeroy in North Dakota, 13-term Rep. Paul Kanjorski in Pennsylvania and 20-year veteran Rep. Chet Edwards in Texas. And Democrats thought to be cruising toward re-election were surprised to be caught up in an anti-incumbent tide. Seven-term Rep. Bob Etheridge in North Carolina lost to Sarah Palin-backed candidate Renee Ellmers, a nurse who got into the race in part because of the health care law. And conservative Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor in Mississippi was defeated by a late surge for Republican state Rep. Steven Palazzo, even after trying everything to distance himself from his party — including publicly confessing that he voted for McCain in the 2008 presidential election. Democrats had few gains to celebrate. In one rare bright spot, John Carney handily beat Republican Glen Urquhart in the race to succeed GOP Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware’s only House seat, which Castle left to unsuccessfully pursue a Senate seat. In New Orleans, Democrat Cedric Richmond beat Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao, who had campaigned as a friend of Obama. And in Hawaii, state Senate president Colleen Hanabusa, for whom Obama appeared in TV ads, unseated Republican Rep. Charles Djou, running for a first full term after winning a May special election in Obama’s birth-state. A handful of Democrats heavily targeted by the GOP pulled through, including Reps. Betty Sutton of Ohio, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heath Shuler of North Carolina and John Yarmuth of Kentucky. Voters went to the polls intensely worried about the economy and dissatisfied with the way the federal government is working. An Associated Press analysis of exit poll results found voters saying the economy eclipses any other issue as their top concern. They’re also expressing dissatisfaction with Obama and Congress, and they don’t have a favorable view of either political party. It was a remarkable turnabout from 2008, when Obama helped propel Democrats to big gains in their House majority only two years after the 2006 wave that swept them to control. This year, few Democratic incumbents were safe, least of all the 51 who claimed Republican seats over the last four years. House candidates and party committees raised and spent tons of campaign cash, and Democrats had a slight edge. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $145 million to bankroll its candidates, compared with $121 million shelled out by the National Republican Congressional Committee. That’s nearly double what the Democratic campaign arm spent in the last election, and more than five times what the Republican counterpart did when the tables were turned. GOP candidates poured a total of $419 million into their campaigns, while Democrats spent
$421.5 million. But Republican-allied outside groups skewed the playing field dramatically. They spent $189.5 million savaging Democratic candidates while independent groups skewering Republicans spent $89 million.
S TAT E Dems Win Most CA Statewide Office Slots BY GREG RISLING Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrats sewed up five of California’s statewide offices, bucking the national swing toward Republicans, while San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom widened his lead Wednesday over his Republican counterpart for lieutenant governor. With voters electing Jerry Brown as governor over Republican Meg Whitman, Democrats hoped Newsom could outduel incumbent Abel Maldonado for lieutenant governor, giving the majority party the state’s two top spots. With 61 percent of precincts reporting, Newsom had 48 percent of the vote, compared to 41 percent for the GOP’s Maldonado. Newsom, 43, declared victory early Wednesday, even though Maldonado was girding himself for possibly not knowing the outcome until sometime later in the day. “I want to thank Californians from every corner of the state and every walk of life for believing in this campaign and the important work ahead,” Newsom said. “If we want the great state of California to get back to business, we must change the way Sacramento does theirs.” Meanwhile, Democratic incumbent and longtime California politician Bill Lockyer defeated Republican state Sen. Mimi Walters in the treasurer’s race. Incumbent John Chiang, a Democrat, beat Republican Tony Strickland, an anti-tax, fiscal conservative, in a rematch from 2006 for controller. The office is charged with watching more than roughly $100 billion in transactions. Democratic incumbent Secretary of State Debra Bowen was re-elected, fending off Republican D a -

In a contest between termed-out state assemblymen, Democrat Dave Jones of Sacramento defeated Republican Mike Villines of Clovis to replace outgoing Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. Republican candidates in California were trying to ride the wave of discontent with Democrats in Congress and hoping to avoid a repeat of 2006, when Democrats took most of California’s eight constitutional offices. Republicans account for roughly 31 percent of registered voters in California, while Democrats comprise about 44 percent of registered voters. Newsom has garnered national attention for his support of gay marriages, while Maldonado has roiled conservatives in the GOP for casting the deciding vote last year while he was state senator on a budget that boosted taxes. LOCAL Tabor Led the Pack but Misses the Mark BY FRANCIS TAYLOR L.A. Sentinel Contributing Writer Because he needed 50 percent of votes plus one, but didn’t get enough on Nov. 2, Danny Tabor has to compete in another mayoral run-off election against James Butts next year. Tabor got about 44 percent of votes, while Butts received roughly 31 percent, according to unofficial election results from Inglewood Deputy City Clerk Cheryl Moore. One-hundred percent of precincts reported the results. The election could take place in January, which would be the city’s fourth one since June 2010. The first was held in June after now-former Mayor Roosevelt Dorn left a vacancy for the mayoral office — he resigned after pleading guilty to a public corruption charge. Tabor and Butts, a former Inglewood police officer and previous Santa Monica Police Department chief of police, were the top vote-getters in that election. Tabor, a former city councilman and once a community organizer for the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, had about 26 percent of the vote while Butts received nearly 24 percent. That led to a run-off election in August, which Tabor won. That special August run-off election was required by the city’s charter. Another election had to be held on Nov. 2, but to be mayor one must win 50 percent of votes plus one, according to the city charter. With a reported deficit of nearly $18 million, the city could be headed for tougher economic times. And elections are costly undertakings.

Murray’s attorney, Charles H. Peckham, told Walter that there would still be legal hurdles in state court for Joe Jackson’s lawsuit. He said after the hearing that Murray will challenge whether the elder Jackson has the right to sue for wrongful death. Authorities have accused Murray of giving Michael Jackson a lethal dose of sedatives, including the anesthetic propofol, in the bedroom of the singer’s rented mansion. Propofol is meant to be used in hospital settings. Murray has pleaded not guilty. Walter also said Monday he didn’t want to wait for Murray’s trial to conclude, and he warned the attorneys that if the case remained in his courtroom, it would not be significantly delayed. “I’m not going to wait around for two years, if you think that’s how long the criminal case is going to take,” the judge said. Murray is due back in criminal court Jan. 4 for the start of a preliminary hearing where prosecutors will lay out some of the evidence against him. His attorneys have said he did not give the one-time King of Pop anything that should have killed him.

France honors ‘beloved’ U.S. novelist Toni Morrison BY JENNY BARCHFIELD ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS — Toni Morrison is “beloved” in France, the country’s culture minister said Wednesday, as he inducted the celebrated U.S. novelist into the elite Legion of Honor society. Rapper T.I. reports to US federal prison again FORREST CITY, Arkansas (AP) — The rapper T.I. has reported for a second time to a federal prison to serve time for a weapons violation. The 30-year-old T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, showed up shortly before noon at the gates of the Forrest City low-security prison, traveling in an entourage of two black Chevrolet suburbans. Harris served about seven months in the Arkansas prison in 2009 before he was released last December on probation. Last month, a federal judge sentenced him to serve another 11 months in prison for breaking his federal probation after he was arrested on Sept. 1 in Los Angeles on drug charges. Prosecutors in Los Angeles say they won’t file a felony drug charge against the rapper.

Tatts and piercings; What does it matter?
What should we learn from the Eddie Long scandal? BY PASTOR BOBBY SCOTT
Elder Jason Malveaux Scripture:I PETER 1:15-16. BY ELDER JASON MALVEAUX BETHESDA TEMPLE CHURCH, LOS ANGELES When we were youth much of the conversation (preaching) around holiness, a consecrated lifestyle, seemed to pigeon-hole its way to clothes. Some of us, internally or openly, understood that our clothes made statement about who we were on the inside. Some of us wanted to identify with Christ. After about three years in the Youth Department, people started ask, “What does what I wear have to do with my salvation?” Collectively, we decided that since you can not tell what is in a person’s heart by looking at their clothes, that clothing was irrelevant to how consecrated a person’s heart may be. I should add that hip-hop was coming on strong as the clothing of choice for young people, which, at that time, was particularly associated with gangster culture. Young people, my friends, were saying, “Just because I sag does not mean I don’t love God.” Furthermore, another argument I remember was that the Old Testament law could not be used to justify or standardize New Testament church culture.
We failed to realize that God may have changed ceremonies now that Jesus fulfilled the law but He did not change how He felt about how we choose to live. Therefore, “You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the Lord,” is a statement of divine disposition rather than ceremonial rite. Simply put, just because Jesus died and rose again and we are under grace does not mean that He changed is disposition. If God said, “... never tattoo yourselves” in the Old Testament, there is no reason for us to believe that God has changed His mind on the issue. Those who seek to consecrate themselves may seek to evaluate God’s dispositions in the Old Testament to gain insight into what holiness looks like in the New Testament. So why do people rebel against dressing the part in church? Because we say, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (I Pet. 1:15-16.) We make it a matter of disobedience to God. Nobody wants to feel like their soul is in danger because of what they choose to wear on their skin or on their body. We are not wrong.
Iniquity in the Old Testament, the flesh in the New Testament, is the deep desire to turn away from what is right. This issue is in the soul of every person and it is at WAR with God. It is why we need to be saved. The flesh has manifestations (Gal. 5:16-17). When you see rebelliousness, anger, jealousy, as well as fornication, drunkenness, etc., these are evidences that let you know that there is a soul loosing his/her battle. Conformity to the world strengthens the flesh. I thought the old folks had issues for requiring us to live so conservatively. Now I realize they weren’t crazy, they were experienced. They wanted victory in their souls and they knew how to get it. Our manner of citizenship, how we conduct ourselves in the day to day, must exhibit holiness. Our lifestyle must say, “Jesus is Lord in my soul.” It means we shop for clothes as if Jesus was our shopping buddy. We contemplate getting a tattoo as if Jesus was making the decision with us. If asked why, just say, “I’m trying to live for Christ and I don’t think that it is right for me.” Don’t give in ... just stand ... they’ll give in before long. If they don’t respect you for your decision, then you know what kind of friend we do not have.
It’s not often that a pastor, particularly in the black community, is the lead story on CNN, and for that matter, the top news story in the nation. Proud day for the church? Not exactly. Tragic is a better description. Four young male members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church accused their bishop, Eddie Long, of coercing them into having sex. Alleged salacious details and pictures of Long clad in skin-tight muscle outfits supposedly texted to the young men flooded the news waves. Long, in recent court filings, denied all the allegations. Added to the shocking nature of this is Long’s long-standing adamant position that same-sex marriage is sin. The result: an irresistible titillating news story and a nightmare of reproach for every predominantly black church (good ones and bad). The growing consensus to this scandal seems to be that Biblebelieving Christians in predominantly black churches are homophobic hypocrites, and the obvious solution is that they must become more lovingly inclusive of homosexuality so people can stop pretending to be straight in their churches when they are really not. As a Bible-believing pastor in a predominantly black church, I feel obligated to respond to this story, because 1. the growing consensus misses the biblical mark, and 2. because the Bible more than sufficiently instructs the church how to handle pastoral crises. Therefore, let me offer 10 brief points regarding what the Bible says about a scandal like this. • Before drawing hard conclusions, let the whole story come out. “He who gives an answer before he hears, it is folly and shame to him,” Pro. 18:13. • Don’t ignore the obvious. Jesus warns, “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. … every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit,” Matt. 7:15-17. • There are certain kinds of sins that if present in a person’s life will produce other grosser sins. The apostle Paul teaches, “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith,” 1 Tim. 6:10. Therefore, the Bible absolutely forbids churches from calling men as pastors who are not “free from the love of money,” 1 Tim. 3:3. • Whenever someone is truly innocent, God will vindicate them.
Pastor Bobby Scott “Keeping a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame,” 1 Pet. 3:16. • Conversely, the Bible teaches that God will expose those who try to hide their sin in the name of religion. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap,” Gal. 6:7. • God loves all sinners, straight and gay, because he sent His Son to die for all sinners, John 3:16. He also loves too much to leave people in their sin, so He calls all sinners to repent and put their faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Those who will, straight or gay, He forgives and transforms. Those who won’t, straight or gay, religious or irreligious, He judges, 1 Cor. 6:9-11. • God holds leaders to a stricter judgment. “Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment,” James 3:1. • Church leadership must not be a good-ol-boys club that covers up sins when allegations are substantiated by two our more people. They must be taken very seriously. Scripture admonishes the church, “Do not receive an accusation against an elder (pastor or bishop) except on the basis of two or three witnesses,” 1 Tim. 5:19. But if found to be true, the church cannot be a respecter of persons and show partiality to its leaders. The Word of God demands that “Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning,” 1 Tim. 5:19, also see v. 20. • When brazen sin in the church is not rebuked, then it spreads like cancer, corrupting the whole church. “Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump,” 1 Cor. 5:7. • The obvious solution is that churches in the black community See SCOTT, page 23

SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY JOURNAL For years it was seen as the “gay, White man’s disease.” But the face for HIV/AIDS has long since changed, bearing a much darker complexion. According to published reports,
health officials estimate that one in 22 African Americans will be diagnosed with the AIDS virus in their lifetime — more than twice the risk for Hispanics and eight times that of Whites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the numbers last week; noting the lifetime risk is one in 52 for Hispanics,

and one in 170 for Whites. According to the report, Asian Americans had the lowest lifetime risk, at about one in 222. The data is no longer considered shocking to some. Earlier research has shown that Black Americans have an exceptionally high risk of HIV infection. Given the disproportionately high rate of risk for the disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently expanded its Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative to increase prevention efforts in the African-American, Latino, gay and bisexual communities, which are hardest hit by HIV/AIDS. The initiative is a partnership of major community organizations and was launched last year to intensify HIV prevention in the Black community. As part of the new effort, the CDC has reportedly increased funding for the initiative from $10 million to $16 million over six years, brought in eight additional organizational partners, two of which focus specifically on gay Black men, and continues to build on outreach efforts already in place in the Black community. Partners include 100 Black Men of America, American Urban Radio Networks, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, the National Action Network, the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Medical Association and the National Urban League.

Ninos” exhibits at the Museum of Tolerance (MOT) will run through Dec. 13. These exhibits highlight in separate but related installations the contributions of both Latinos and AfricanAmericans to the Civil Rights Movement. “Courage” is the story of the Rev. Joseph Delaine and some citizens of Clarendon County, S.C., who, in 1950, brought a lawsuit to challenge racial segregation in schools that led to the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. This interactive, multimedia presentation depicts what life was like for African Americans living in the South during this time and features a diorama of a firebombed church, and re-creations of the separate and unequal classrooms that existed at the time. Also, while most people know about desegregation in the South, a separate exhibit at the museum, “Para Todos Los Ninos: Fighting Segregation in California,” focuses on a lesser-known case: the story of the landmark case in Southern California that took place almost 10 years before Brown v. Board of Education. This new bilingual exhibition shows the history of segregation in California through the personal story of the Mendez family and their struggle to end school segregation. Their sacrifices resulted in the closing of not only Mexican-American schools but also abolishing segregated schools for AsianAmerican and Native-American children as well. The museum is at 9786 W. Pico Blvd. (at the southeast corner of Pico Boulevard and Roxbury Drive), Los Angeles. More information: (310) 5538403.

What About Black American Reality and the American Dream Economic Justice? BY DR. BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS JR. NNPA COLUMNIST During the last several weeks there have been many published opinion articles about the state of the American dream in 2010 for people who live in the United States. Most notably was journalist Fareed Zakaria’s cover story, “Restoring the American Dream,” in the Nov. 1 edition of TIME. He asserted, “the grim reality is that technology and globalization are shattering the middle class. With the midterms around the corner, the good news is that a bipartisan policy agenda can return the country to prosperity.” What is the state of Black America today? What is our share of the economy? Are our children receiving a quality education? With the nation polarized once again with partisan politics, who is going to assert and protect the interests of African Americans? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in August of 1963, clearly articulated the aspirations, hopes and dreams of millions of Black Americans that one day we would all have the opportunity to share in the reality of the American Dream. That was 47 years ago. We have made real progress since that time in some areas, but today we must remind ourselves of the formidable challenges that still exist. When we used to sing “We Shall Overcome” back in the 1960s, it was against a societal backdrop of harsh racial, economic and political realities. But, we kept our faith and marched on in spite of the gloomy forecasts, threats and acts of violent domestic terrorism against the Civil Rights Movement. Similarly today, we must keep our faith and keep marching on. We must keep our struggle for freedom, justice and equality alive with a renewal of vigor, spirit and selfdetermination. We have more reasons today to demand equal justice and fairness. There are some who think we should keep quiet and not make too much
protest noise about our social condition as a people in America because we have a brother in the White House. I am very proud that we have President Barack Obama in the White House. Thus far, he has been
Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. a great President. However, we should not be less vocal today. We should not be less concerned about our realities in the United States. We should be more outspoken. Our children deserve a much better quality education. We should be not less willing to speak out for the sake of our children and communities. We have always known that education is a major key to our liberation from poverty and racial injustice. That is why I am a strong advocate for our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These historic institutions of high achievement and academic excellence are needed now more than ever before because of the consequential prerequisite for a college education into the mainstream of American life. We, therefore, should work diligently to support the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO). Too many of our young stu-
dents, however, in high school and junior high school drop out before even getting a chance to complete high school and to apply to a college. Grades K through 12 have got to be our focus as well. In New York, the failure rate percentage of the third-grade reading tests statewide are used to determined how many juvenile prisons are going to be built. Across the nation in too many instances, incarceration has supplanted the education of our young men and women. Because of the current economy and high unemployment rates, Black people in the U.S. are witnessing a severe downturn in economic status with respect to wealth attainment and empowerment. Fortymillion African Americans are expected to spend more than $1 trillion, but primarily as consumers, according to the 8th edition of Packaged Facts’ “The African-American Market in the U.S.” report. We have to be more focused on developing a stronger economic development and AfricanAmerican-owned businesses in our communities. But again, education and apprenticeship training are key. Zarkaria was right to call national attention to what’s happening to the American Dream. For too many in our communities, it is more of the American Nightmare when it comes to poverty and self-destruction. We all must face the future with a renewed sense of struggle and commitment. Yes, it will not be easy to turn our situation around. But how and when our situation will change for the better is more in our own hands to determine. The Black Press, in all of its dimensions, will continue to be the most reliable source of information and action agendas for all of us to participate. Let’s work together to further change ourselves as we further change America for the better. We shall overcome! Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. is senior adviser to the Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) and president of Education Online Services Corp.
BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST The election of President Barack Obama in 2008 seems to have uncorked a virulent racism among folks who are hatefully resentful of the fact that an African American man now leads our nation. The steady drumbeat of negative commentary is so overwhelming that many African Americans are cowed and cautioned into not even asserting our issues, so artfully poised to drown out dissent that some liberals have decided to hold their powder until after the election for fear of hurting our president. A Washington Post article penned by bitter blasts from the past — see it at www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/29/AR2010102905966.ht ml — shamefully compared President Obama to Richard Nixon because of his “partisanship,” describing him, in a manner devoid of context, as “divisive” while it took a Canadian to remind us that President Obama is, indeed, the President of the United States, not “dude,” or a “hottie,” or a “Marxist” or a “socialist,” as so many have described him. The fact is that if Barack Obama walked on water somebody would say he couldn’t swim (remember the Jackson campaign in 1984), and Republicans repeatedly rebuffed the olive branch he offered in the early days of his administration when he thought more of human nature than it was capable of in offering the possibility of bipartisanship. Oh, well. I’m writing before Tuesday’s election, uncertain about the outcome. All the polls and the pundits say it will be a Republican rout. But polls and pundits have been wrong before and for all the negative nattering of nihilistic nabobs, there is the possibility that the least and the left out, though wanting more than they’ve gotten from the Obama administration, understand that turning the clock back is not an acceptable option. Nobody should count their chickens until the last vote clears, and even when there is a clearing, there is much work to be done as our nation embraces an uncertain economic recovery, and looks for ways to bounce back. So far our recovery has been a jobless recovery, which is shameful. Those who would simply cut taxes to balance budgets are tone deaf about the material conditions in which many Americans live. I am especially concerned about the economic inequality faced by African Americans and the fact that our nation seems tone deaf to it. Because President Obama happens to be African American, the mention of racial economic inequality seems
Julianne Malveaux to be a forbidden subject. Indeed, the invocation of race is so likely to provoke unremitting hostility that many have looked for “race neutral” remedies to solve a set of issues that clearly have race at their base. In other words, a rising tide won’t lift every boat. Some boats need holes repaired, new oars, or a new motor. Some communities are woefully lagging in the midst of our so-called economic recovery. Consider these facts: 1. According to the September 18 report on income and poverty, the poverty rate for African Americans was 25.8 percent, compared to 9.4 percent for whites, 12.5 percent for Asian Americans, 25.3 percent for Hispanics, and a 14.3 percent combined rate for all of us. That rate is up by more than 1 percent in a year, and more than 43 million of us are poor. 2. The median African American income level in 2009 was $32,000, compared to $54,000 for whites, $65,000 for Asians and $38,000 for Hispanics. While income levels dropped for every racial and ethnic group, they dropped most for African Americans. 3. Last month’s unemployment rate (new rates will be released on Nov. 5) were 9.6 percent, 8.7 percent for whites, 16.1 percent for African Americans, and 12.4 percent for Hispanics. When discouraged and part time workers are included, the overall rate is 17.1 percent, and the rate for African Americans is 28.7 percent 4. The Survey of Consumer Finance, a report that the Federal Reserve Bank issues every three years, indicates that the median level of wealth for whites was $170,400, compared to $27,800 for African Americans in 2007. That’s a ratio of more than 6:1, an inequality more severe than income inequality. The gap may have widened since the start of the Great Recession. See MALVEAUX, page 22

you how much we admire you and we love you. ... You’re ‘beloved,’ he said, with a nod to the 1987 novel “Beloved,” which won Morrison international acclaim. Mitterrand then launched into a reading of an excerpt from the French translation of Morrison’s “Jazz.” Taking to the podium after Mitterrand’s address, Morrison hailed his rendition as “exquisite.” “I’ve always felt welcomed in France and especially in Paris, and it’s important to me, the receipt of this medal, the Legion of Honor, because now I know in addition to being welcomed, I am prized,” said Morrison, her long gray dreadlocks falling in a cascade down her back. Following the ceremony, journalists swarmed Morrison to get her

reaction to the Democrats’ defeat in Tuesday’s midterm elections. “I’m not here to talk about Obama, I’m here to talk about me,” she eventually said in exasperation, as they continued to pester her. Morrison, an Ohio native who was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in 1931, began writing in 1970. She won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993 and a Pulitzer Prize for “Beloved” — which in 2006 was deemed the best American novel of the past 25 years by a group of critics and writers assembled by The New York Times Book Review. Some of her other works, including “Jazz,” “Song of Solomon” and “The Bluest Eye” have also won her worldwide acclaim and have been translated into scores of languages. With Wednesday’s ceremony, Morrison was made an officer in the Legion of Honor. She had already been made a knight in another top French honor society, the Order of Arts and Letters, Mitterrand said. Created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honor recognizes military, cultural, scientific or social contributions to France, including by people who are not French citizens.

Continued from page 17 forgot the weapon was in his bag,” stated Mangum. Mangum, along with her cocounsel, Michael Domanico, were victorious in getting a “Not guilty” verdict on Oct. 6, 2010, resulting in a big win for both her client and her firm. Cases involving weapon charges do not always end well for defendants. Rap star Petey Pablo was recently arrested for a similar charge, carrying a concealed weapon at a North Carolina airport. Lil’ Wayne, T.I. and Gilbert Arenas are just a few of the celebrities who have encountered similar charges. If convicted, Pablo can face serious felony charges. Citing the late, legendary attorney Johnnie L. Cochran as her role model and following in his footsteps, Mangum founded The Mangum Law Firm, LLC to help make a difference in her community, society, and in the lives of her clients. A highly accomplished attorney, Mangum is quickly building her career and brand as a compassionate, yet assertive lawyer who puts her client’s needs first. A dedicated, effective, and highly sought after professional, Mangum has an exhaustive list of impressive accomplishments. Prior to starting her own law firm, Ms. Mangum worked as an Assistant District Attorney for the State of New Mexico, and was responsible for handling misdemeanors for the state. She also held a position as an Assistant State’s Attorney for McHenry County and was responsible for handling Driving
Under the Influence of Alcohol (DUI) cases and Statutory Summary Suspension (SSS) Hearings. As the Assistant District Attorney, Mangum also handled all misdemeanors and Domestic Violence cases. Before relocating to Illinois, Ms. Mangum worked as a Law Clerk for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, and assisted attorneys in the Felony High-Tech Crimes Unit. She graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Southern California, and earned an Intellectual Property Certificate and Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School. Like her male counterpart and hero, Johnnie L. Cochran, Mangum is a winning lawyer with exceptional skills in the courtroom who is quickly climbing the ladder of success. As a young, successful business woman, Mangum is proving that African American women lawyers can successfully overcome any barriers to success and achieve the impossible. An active member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Northwest Suburban Bar Association, Ms. Mangum provides quality representation to her clients, and focuses on Criminal Defense, Family Law, Small Claims, and Traffic cases. In summary, it blatantly misses the point to suggest that black churches are filled with homosexuals who are afraid to come out because the black church is unloving. I know of no church that is more forgiving and willing to receive hurting people than the black church. However, the black church has also been taught to accept the Bible literally, and many homosexuals in black church don’t come out because
they know that the Bible calls homosexuality sin. So while the Bible plainly teaches that God is love, it is also teaches that God is Holy, and He hates sin. The real issue, then, for professing Christians who struggle with homosexual urges is will they to turn to God for the power to live holy lives? All Christians will struggle against temptations, and God pro-
vides each and every one of them overcoming grace so that they can live consistently holy lives and experience His liberating grace of forgiveness when they repent each time they fail. In due time, God will lift the clouds surrounding this scandal, and He will make it very clear what kind of man Bishop Long is. I have a feeling that through this, God is going to reveal where a lot of us stand — if
we are indeed loyal to our loving and holy God or not. I pray that this will be a wakeup call to many and that we will heed the prayer of the King Solomon, “If (God’s) people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chron. 7:14.

LAKERS
Continued from page 10 Although Jackson slapped a couple of nicknames on his reserves during the last two title runs — the Bench Mob, and later the Minutemen — their struggles often forced the starters to play heavy minutes. Jackson already displays more confidence in his new bench, which scored 55 points in the Lakers’ first two games before logging major minutes in the blowout win over the Warriors. “You can probably be a starter somewhere and not have a chance to play for a championship, or you can go to a situation where you have an
opportunity to win,” said Blake, the Lakers’ most capable backup to point guard Derek Fisher in several years. “That’s what they did in Miami, and that’s what we’re doing here, on a little different scale.” Blake hit the go-ahead 3-pointer and made a last-second defensive stop in the season-opening win over Houston, while Brown added 16 points in a flurry of outside shots from an acrobatic dunker with a rapidly evolving game. Brown has largely supplanted Vujacic as Bryant’s backup. Sure, they can play — but what about this new nickname? Jackson
hasn’t spelled it out, but it’s clear he hopes to instill a restless, aggressive spirit in the group. The reserves all love it, although Barnes also likes Lakers TV analyst Stu Lantz’s “Killer B’s” sobriquet for Blake, Brown and himself. The common theme among the Renegades is hunger. While the 37year-old Ratliff and Blake already have made good money, they need a ring to complete their well-traveled careers. Barnes and Brown are still chasing that big contract, and they believe it’s easier to get when you’re a winner. Eager second-round draft picks
Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter are also around to carry luggage and push the veterans in practice — and don’t forget, Odom will be back in charge of the bench when center Andrew Bynum recovers from offseason knee surgery, likely around Thanksgiving. “We have guys this year that are accepting of their roles, and they’re professionals,” said Odom, who is averaging 16 points and 13.7 rebounds in an outstanding start. “They’re going to police themselves out there. If we can get something from 1 through 12, we can be even better.”
Odom didn’t mention Farmar by name, but the UCLA guard wasn’t content winning two rings while backing up Fisher. Proclaiming he deserved to be a starter, he left the Lakers for New Jersey — where he’s a backup again, but for a much worse team. “This year, I think we have better chemistry, in terms of the pieces fitting better together coming off the bench,” Jackson said. “I knew as soon as we signed those free agents that we would be better, just because you know what they bring. You know what those pieces are going to look like.”
