Rep. Davis to Clinton: stay out of Chicago politics KAREN HAWKINS ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO — Congressman Danny Davis has a message for former President Bill Clinton: Don’t take sides in the Chicago mayor’s race — or else. Davis, a longtime friend of Clinton, warned the ex-president on Tuesday that he could jeopardize his “long and fruitful relationship” with the black community if he campaigns for former White House chief of staff
Rahm Emanuel instead of one of the two leading black candidates running — Davis or former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun. The warning highlights the stakes in what is gearing up to be a contentious race for mayor in the nation’s third-largest city. About a dozen people have made it on to the ballot to replace retiring Mayor Richard M. Daley, who is bowing out after more than 20 years in office, giving candidates their first real shot at Chicago's top job for the first time in

two decades. In a news release, Davis, a Democrat from Chicago’s West Side, said Clinton’s relationship with the black community may be “fractured and perhaps even broken” if he comes to town to stump for Emanuel, who moved back to Chicago this fall to run for mayor and is leading in the polls. Davis later told The Associated Press that he intended the news release to be a personal appeal to Clinton, friend to friend. “You just wouldn’t want your friends to be campaigning against you,” Davis said with a laugh. “I’ve enjoyed a great friendship and relationship and have a tremendous amount of affinity for both the Clintons ... and I’d like to keep it that way.” “I want him to be neutral,” Davis said of the former president. Emanuel’s campaign recently announced that Clinton was going to head a campaign event in January, but no date or time has been announced. Campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt declined to comment on Davis’ statement, and messages left with Clinton’s foundation weren’t immediately returned on Tuesday. Blacks make up 35 percent of Chicago’s population, a key voting bloc that has the potential to doom or elevate a candidate. A recent Chicago Tribune/WGN poll showed Davis

The poll showed Emanuel leading with 30 percent among all voters surveyed. Hawaii’s governor wants to reveal Obama birth info BY MARK NIESSE ASSOCIATED PRESS HONOLULU — Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie wants to
find a way to release more information about President Barack Obama’s Hawaii birth and dispel conspiracy theories that he was born elsewhere.

President Barack Obama, right, watches his daughter Sasha Obama, lower right, admire her shave ice at Island Snow at Kailua Beach Center while on vacation with the first family in Kailua, Hawaii, Monday, Dec. 27, 2010.
Abercrombie was a friend of Obama’s parents and knew him as a child, and is deeply troubled by the effort to cast doubt on the president’s citizenship. The newly elected governor will ask the state attorney general’s office about what can be done to put an end to questions about Obama's birth documentation from Aug. 4, 1961, spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said Tuesday. “He had a friendship with Mr. Obama’s parents, and so there is a personal issue at hand,” Dela Cruz said. “Is it going to be done immediately? No, the first thing on our list is the economy.” It’s unclear what Abercrombie could do because Hawaii’s privacy laws have long barred the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who doesn't have a tangible interest. Hawaii’s health director said last year and in 2008 that she had seen and verified Obama’s original vital records, and birth notices in two Honolulu newspapers were published within days of Obama’s birth at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu.

President Barack Obama laughs with employee Renee Ebia, of Kailua, Hawaii., as he eats his Shave Ice at Island Snow at Kailua Beach Center while on vacation with the first family in Kailua, Hawaii, Monday, Dec. 27, 2010. So-called “birthers” claim Obama is ineligible to be president because they say there’s no proof he was born in the United States, with many of the skeptics questioning whether he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s home country. “What bothers me is that some people who should know better are trying to use this for political reasons,” Abercrombie told the Los Angeles Times last week. “Maybe I’m the only one in the country that could look you right in the eye right now and tell you, ‘I was here when that baby was born.’ ” Abercrombie was unavailable for additional comment Tuesday because he was vacationing on Maui, Dela Cruz said. The Obama campaign issued a certificate of live birth in 2008, an official document from the state showing the president’s birth date, city and name, along with his parents’ names and races. The certificate doesn’t list the name of the hospital where he was born or the physician who delivered him, information collected by the state as part of its vital records. Abercrombie, originally from New York, befriended Obama’s parents at the University of Hawaii after he moved here in 1959, the same year the islands became a state. Abercrombie, 72, has said he
remembers seeing Obama as a child with his parents at social events, although he acknowledged that he didn’t see his parents with their newborn son at the hospital. The number of requests for Obama’s birth information increased this month as the Obama family prepared to vacation in Hawaii. The Department of Health had received 27 requests for the president’s birth information this month as of last Thursday, up from 16 in November, said spokeswoman Janice Okubo. Information requests rose despite a new state law allowing officials to ignore persistent and repetitive inquiries, a law that has been used about six times by the department, Okubo said. “It’s just a few people, and some of their requests are the same,” she said. “The requests fluctuate from month to month.” Nearly all birth certificate information seekers are from the mainland United States, with requests rarely coming from Hawaii residents, said Cathy Takase, acting director for the state Office of Information Practices. Takase usually responds to appeals for Obama’s birth records by telling requesters that the information they’re seeking is contained in records protected by statute.

49ers fire coach Mike Singletary BY JANIE MCCAULEY AP SPORTS WRITER SAN FRANCISCO — Mike Singletary made a name for himself as a coach with that bold “I want winners! declaration more than two years ago. Ultimately, he didn’t produce enough victories to save his job.
the things we set out to achieve. We should be a playoff team, York said in the locker room. “We aren’t a playoff team this year. Very disappointed about that. We need to figure out how we can get into the playoffs and how we can start competing for Super Bowls. San Francisco began the year

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary looks on from the sidelines during the first quarter of an NFL football game against the St. Louis Rams, Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in St. Louis. The Hall of Fame linebacker was fired by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night after two disappointing seasons, including a 5-10 showing this year for a franchise that expected to win the NFC West. The team made the announcement upon returning to the Bay Area late Sunday, several hours after San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention with a 25-17 loss at St. Louis. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was promoted to interim coach and will run the team in the season finale at home against Arizona. He was to be formally introduced in a news conference Monday. After team president and CEO Jed York told reporters in St. Louis after the loss he would think about whether Singletary would coach the final game, Singletary then was told of his dismissal back at the team's Santa Clara complex. “I want to thank Mike Singletary for the passion and effort that he brought to this organization, York said in a statement. “He is a tremendous person for whom I will always have great respect. York said money wasn’t an object in this decision considering Singletary had two years remaining on his contract. “Obviously, we didn’t achieve
with high hopes of winning the West and reaching the postseason for the first time since 2002. Singletary was 18-22 in two-plus seasons. “One of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers, Singletary said in a statement. “What made it so special were the players. They were some of the most outstanding men I have ever been around in my life. The coaches were truly professionals. I wish the 49ers nothing but the best. I am thankful to the York family for having given me the opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL. I am indebted to them for that. I am also thankful for the Faithful fans, I am just sorry I couldn’t give them more. The 49ers opened 0-5 and will finish with a losing record for the seventh time in eight years. They went 88 in Singletary's first full season, then produced an unbeaten preseason this year only to drop their first five games. It was the franchise's worst start since losing seven in a row to begin a 2-14 season in 1979 — in the late Hall of Famer Bill Walsh's first year as coach. No team has recovered from an 0-5 start to reach the playoffs, but the 49ers would have made it if they had defeated the Rams and won again
next Sunday. If that had happened, San Francisco would have won the tiebreaker over Seattle and St. Louis to win the division and become the first team with a losing record in a non-strike season to make the playoffs. “You know what, I’ll put it this way: a personal failure. I’m the head coach of this team and obviously wanted us to do better, felt that we could do better, Singletary said after the game Sunday. “There are some obvious questions that I hoped would be answered as the season went on, and obviously were not answered. When that happens, you end up out of the playoffs. “I take full responsibility for every unanswered question. The 52-year-old Singletary, who first took over as coach on an interim basis when Mike Nolan was fired in Oct. 2008, had two years remaining on his contract. York — son of owner John York — seems ready for major change around the Niners despite having to pay Singletary. “Money is no object, Jed York said in St. Louis. “I mean, our object is to win the Super Bowl, year in and year out be there and compete for Super Bowls. We’re going to make sure we get this right. During his debut in place of Nolan — a 34-13 loss to the Seahawks on Oct. 26, 2008 — Singletary pulled down his pants in the locker room at halftime to make a point, benched struggling quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan in favor of Shaun Hill, and sent now-Pro Bowl and captain tight end Vernon Davis to the showers early for what he deemed inappropriate behavior following a personal foul penalty. Afterward, Singletary called out his team with the now infamous “I want winners! speech. “I’d rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we have to do something else rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team, Singletary said. “It is more about them than it is about the team. Cannot play with them, cannot win with them, cannot coach with them. Can’t do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win. This year, Singletary fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye after Week 3, then lost secondary coach and special assistant, Johnnie Lynn, when he resigned for personal reasons earlier this month. Singletary switched quarterbacks three different times, starting with Alex Smith, going to Troy Smith for five games even after Alex Smith’s hurt non-throwing shoulder had healed, then back to Alex Smith for two games before Troy Smith started Sunday — only to give way to Alex Smith in the fourth quarter after Troy Smith had a heated exchange with Singletary. “I’m not worried about individual things like that. What bothers me is we come in here, this is a playoffcaliber game, and we didn’t get it done, York said. “And that’s the bottom line.

Union: NFL players, owners sense urgency in talks BY RACHEL COHEN AP SPORTS WRITER NEW YORK — Union executive committee member Brian Dawkins says he believes NFL owners and players have a sense of urgency to avoid a lockout because they don’t want to alienate fans. “I would think common sense would say at the end of the day, after all the fighting and after all the words are said, we understand who butters our bread, the veteran Denver Broncos safety said Tuesday. “That’s where the urgency comes in at. Dawkins and fellow NFL Players Association executive committee member Mike Vrabel alternated between optimism and expressing frustration with the league’s proposals during a conference call about negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. The current deal expires March 4, raising fears of a lockout. One major sticking point is the NFL’s desire to go from 16 regular-season and four preseason games to 18 and two. Dawkins and Vrabel said the league hadn’t offered enough in return for what they believe will be shorter careers — and therefore less money made — with the longer regular season resulting in more punishment for players’ bodies. “I don’t think with good conscience we could say, ‘Guys, this is all we could get for you for 18 games. Go out there and strap it up and hope you make it through,’ said Vrabel, a veteran linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. Dawkins is in his 15th season, Vrabel his 14th, but Dawkins predicted “these types of careers will be rarities. The two veterans said they were heartened their fellow players have seemed more engaged in following the negotiating process than in the past. The cost of maintaining health insurance under federal COBRA law during a lockout has been a real eye-opener. For a family with two adults and two children, a player would have to pay $2,400 a month to keep
his current coverage. While encouraging members to save money, the union has set aside funds of $60,000 per player by raising dues and withholding royalties. As a potential lockout looms, Vrabel believes fans can relate more to players than to owners. “We don’t have 32 players who have private jets in the NFL, he said.

Media blitz preps viewers for Winfrey OWN channel BY LYNN ELBER AP TELEVISION WRITER LOS ANGELES — The Oprah Winfrey Network launching Saturday is wary of promising too much of a good thing — Winfrey herself. In stoking interest in the cable channel, the goal is to exploit Winfrey’s popularity while emphasizing that OWN won’t be all Oprah, all the time. “We really don’t want to be a niche brand. We want to be a mainstream cable network with appeal beyond Winfrey’s fan base,” said Darren Schillace, vice president of consumer marketing for OWN. “Phase one” of the marketing effort aims to “manage expectations that it’s not 24/7 Oprah on the network,” Schillace said, with Winfrey committed to appearing in at least 70 hours of programming in 2011. Teena Marie dead at 54 BY KRISTIN GRAY SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE AFRO-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS For celebrated singer Teena Marie, rhythm and blues music was more than a fad or foray into the infamous blue-eyed soul regime, it was a way of life. Raised in Oakwood, Calif., a predominately Black
Teena Marie enclave, the powerhouse singer became acclimated with the vocal acrobatics and emotion that drives R&B music at an early age. Her innate childhood musical abilities flourished into a prosperous career that included songwriting, four Grammy Award nominations and a
kindred career with late R&B singer Rick James. And, for her legion of fans, the “Ivory Queen of Soul’s” music transcended race. On Dec. 26, the singer’s daughter Alia Rose found her mom dead at her California home, according to manager Lynn Jeter. In November, Marie suffered a grand mal seizure – which causes dramatic muscle spasms and loss of consciousness – and reportedly faced a similar episode shortly before her death. The family has not released the exact cause of death. Ironically, Alia Rose, who performs under the name Rose Le Beau, had celebrated her 19th birthday hours before on Christmas Day and on Dec. 24, Marie tweeted, “19 yrs ago today, I was in labor! My heavenly father gave me the most glorious gift I could ever receive. A Baby girl on Christmas!” Born Mary Christine Brockert in 1956, Marie’s most popular hits included “Portuguese Love,” “Ooo La La La” and “Square Biz,” which have been sampled by popular acts such as The Fugees, Foxy Brown, and Dru Hill. Throughout her near 35-year career, Marie sang under several record labels, including Epic, Cash Money Classics, and Stax Records. However, Marie stormed the Black music scene as a fresh faced 19-year-old with Motown Records in 1976. Her debut album, Wild and Peaceful, spawned the hit “I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love” with out-
spoken crooner Rick James. According to her website, many Wild and Peaceful fans incorrectly assumed Marie was African American until her TV debut on “Soul Train” in 1979. She went on to release a slew of albums in the following decades, including her sophomore release Lady T, Passion Play (1994), La Dona (2004) and her most recent album, Congo Square (2009). Washington, D.C., and Baltimore-area fans last welcomed the doe-eyed musician in August at The Birchmere in Northern Virginia and in 2009 at the African American Heritage Festival, where Marie looked the picture of perfect health.

Bernie Wilson, baritone from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, dies at 64 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bernie Wilson, a baritone member of the rhythm and blues group that produced the 1972 hit “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” has died. Wilson, 64, died early Sunday at Kresson View Center in Voorhees, N.J., following a stroke and a heart attack, his cousin, Faith Peace-Mazzccua, said Monday. Philadelphia International Records, the former record company for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, said Wilson’s death leaves Lloyd Parks as the sole surviving member of the group's lineup at the time. The lineup also featured Teddy Pendergrass and Lawrence Brown. The group produced a string of R&B hits in the ’70s and helped define the Sound of Philadelphia. “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” topped the R&B charts and made the top five on the pop charts. The hits that followed included “I Miss You,” “Bad Luck,” “Wake up Everybody,” and the dance track “The Love I Lost,” which has been credited as one of the first disco records, according to an All Music Guide biography on the Billboard website. “He left home at 16 as a pauper
Bernie Wilson and came back home a millionaire,” Peace-Mazzccua told The Associated Press. She said her cousin kept performing until a few years ago and hoped to return and sing gospel music. “Bernard was a very funny person. He should have been a comedian,” she said. “He didn’t take no stuff and he loved people.” Funeral arrangements were pending Monday.

Politician of the Year: Kamala Harris Kamala Harris will be the people’s Attorney General. We enter a new year with an attorney general-elect, ready to be “smart on crime.”

in order to build a better state, there has to be total involvement. This is why she prevailed against her opponents. From the beginning of her campaign, her focus was on the issues at hand. Harris is about prevention, working to stop problems before they begin, which is being “smart on crime,” as she has stated.
Athlete of the Year: Michael Vick Many thought — and some hoped — Vick would never play in the NFL again. But he’s back and much better than before.

to get on the field in place of an injured Kolb, he made most of his opportunity. He seized the moment. During Vick’s years with the Falcons, he was an exciting quar terback who had limited skills, mostly beMICHAEL VICK cause he did not work at his craft. He has admitted that he did not stay late after practice, or show up early before work hours to watch film and perfect his skills. He relied on his God-given abilities. He probably did not realize that those abilities did not make him a great quarterback. That his lack of commitment and effort was stopping him from being one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Well, Vick’s time in prison and him virtually losing everything seem to have put him in a different mindset. It’s likely that he saw how easy it is to go from riches to rags, and now he sees that he has to strive for perfection to ensure that he never goes back down that road. Vick now is a different player. He went from a quarterback who struggled to complete 55 percent of his passes to completing 63.2 percent of his passes this year, by far the best of his career. He is third in the league with a 103.6 quarterback rating, also the highest of his career. Vick is finally a legitimate quarterback. He is no longer a quarterback that is told to make one read and then take off running, or is told to only read a small section of the field. Now Vick scans the field, going through his progressions, just like the Peyton Mannings and Tom Bradys of the league. Vick can now kill defenses from the pocket, or roll out and find receivers open downfield, and if all else fails, he still has the speed to take off and run. Because of his greatly improved passing abilities, Vick is nearly unstoppable. He is now the quarterback that his fans hoped that he could become. He’s the type of quarterback who can lead a team to the Super Bowl. Vick has been named the starter of the NFC’s Pro Bowl team, he is an MVP candidate, and he has turned the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders, all while turning his life around. He has used his time off the field to warn children about the pitfalls of making wrong choices, and he has shown them that with hard work and dedication, anybody can turn their life around.
Vick is probably always going to be hated by many, but he has served his time. Time that he deserved for his wrongdoing. But now he is a free man and has every right to earn a living with the skills and abilities he has. As long as he continues to be a law-abiding citizen and does the right things, then he deserves to be financially rewarded for his talents. Vick has reached some level of redemption, and with time he’s going to continue to win over even more of his doubters.

ONGOING EXHIBIT — The installation in the Gallery of Discovery has created a wide range of emotions because of its graphic link to the transportation of Africans into slavery, life on the plantations and beyond. Thanks to the use of Toni Scott’s “Bloodlines” as the foundation, the space represents the Africa-to-America experience through a mixture of art, artifacts and real life historical narratives and memories. The enormity of the truth of man’s inhumanity to man can be overwhelming, but at the California African American Museum, such images generate questions, further dialogue and promote new understandings. Person of the Week:
Dr. Franklyn W. Richardson VUU names nationally renowned theologist as chair of board of trustees BY JEREMY M. LAZARUS SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE RICHMOND FREE PRESS Dr. Franklyn W. Richardson already is juggling a heavy schedule. The broad-shouldered minister heads a 4,000-member church with congregations in New York and Florida. He is also chairman and chief spokesman of the revived Conference of National Black Churches, an umbrella group of nine historically Black denominations that addresses national issues and promotes church involvement in education and health care. And, he’s actively involved in a variety of other organizations, including the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. Still, the former pastor of two Richmond-area churches is ready to take on another challenging leadership job: Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University, his alma mater. The 61-year-old Philadelphia native was elected to the post recently in a telephone poll of the 23-member board, according to Dr. Benjamin J. Lambert III, the Richmond optometrist and former state senator who heads the VUU board’s nominating committee. A longtime board member and current vice chairman, Dr. Richardson will succeed Dr. Frank S. Royal, the prominent Church Hill physician who has held the chairmanship for 30 years. Dr. Royal announced last month that he wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren and would not seek a new term as chairman, though he will remain on the board. “This is the highest honor of my career,” Dr. Richardson told the Free Press after being reached at the Miami airport where his travel had been stalled by a snowstorm farther north. “This is an opportunity to give back to the institution that invested so much in me,” he said. “I have had a stellar career in the ministry. But, I would not be where I am today without the education I received at Virginia

Increasing Quiet Times Black American employment in 2011 BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST
BY DR. BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS JR. NNPA COLUMNIST Black American unemployment in 2010 soared more than 16 percent. As we begin 2011, there should a more effective and concentrated national plan to significantly increase the overall employment of Black Americans in 2011. The December 2010 consumer spending reports document not only increased spending by all Americans during the holiday season, but also displays another economic indicator that the U.S. economy continues to rebound. Yet, the financial plight and sustainability of AfricanAmerican workers and households still face enormous challenges even amidst the recovery of the American economy. The unemployment statistics reported monthly by the U.S. Department of Labor only tell a portion of the real economic hurdles facing the African-American community. In far too many cities and towns, Black unemployment rates are double the unemployment rates of Whites. Interestingly, the Department of Labor uses the category “Civilian non-institutional population” to cite the population numbers in calculating labor statistics. Because of the massive increase in the overall incarceration rates of African Americans, the unemployment is actually higher for us than is statistically calculated by the Department of Labor. Black incarceration rates are nearly seven times the imprisonment rates of Whites in the United States. Of course with several million African Americans in the criminal justice system either in prison or on parole, the goal of attaining good, productive permanent employment is made much more difficult. The issues of globalization and the tremendous advances in technology during the last decade have changed the dynamics of the world economy. American jobs with the best pay scale will increasingly be linked to the global marketplace and to the new innovations in technology. The good news is that African Americans and others have an
Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. opportunity to level the economic playing field in both attaining good paying jobs and starting up new businesses to the extent to which African Americans and others prepare to take advantage of the job creation and business development opportunities now at hand. But, as I have continued to stress, preparation to become financially viable and productive requires a good education, proper networking, and a strong determination to be successful. At a time when we should be eradicating poverty and social suffering from our communities by demanding and providing the best educational systems and institutions for our children and young adults, it is as if that too many of us have been lulled into a state of hopelessness. That is exactly why when I have the good fortune to meet young, intelligent, up and coming brothers and sisters in the African-American communities who are striving to make a difference educationally and economically to improve the quality of life, I am always encouraged. The priorities for 2011 have to include developing and determining effective educational options for African-American parents and students, increasing support for Historical Black Colleges and Uni-
versities (HBCU’s) and strengthening the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), innovating and launching AfricanAmerican-owned businesses that have both local and global reach into the marketplace, and supporting sustainable economic development in our communities with a focus on job training and long term employment programs and projects. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), there is a new focus on growing the minority business community in the United States. In other words, to grow employment in our communities, we must grow the development of new businesses in our communities. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke recently announced the appointment of 25 individuals to serve on the National Advisory Council for Minority Business Enterprises. This new council is led by the MBDA and is the first such federal advisory council that will be focused on promoting minority businesses since the early 1970s. Thus, another milestone for the Obama administration. David A. Hinson, the MBDA National Director, is an accomplished expert on minority business development in the African American and other minority communities. Hinson stated, “The nation’s 5.8 million minority-owned firms have significant untapped potential that can benefit the United States. The advisory council has an opportunity to shape future policies and programs that will set the foundation for the growth of $100 million companies across all industries that are owned and operated by U.S. minorities.” The outlook, therefore, in 2011 is more promising than it was two years ago. Opportunity is on the horizon for African-American businesses and workers. But, let’s stay focus. Let’s be prepared. Our long fight for freedom, justice, and equality has to result in more employment and thus empowerment. Let’s continue to fight. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis is senior adviser for the Black Alliance for Educational Options and president of Education Online Services Corp.
A snowstorm has blanketed the East Coast, causing flight cancellations and disrupted holiday plans. The President has been recently vacationing in Hawaii after a grueling lame duck session in Washington. During this the last week of the year, there will be no economic indicator issues. These are quiet times. I received an e-mail from a friend of a friend, one of those forwarded things that I swear not to forward on, even though I am threatened with gloom, doom, and decades of bad luck if I fail to spread the word. This electronic version of a chain letter leaves much to be desired until I read to the bottom line that says, “Jan. 1, 2011 can be written as 1-111. How much more confirmation do you need to do things differently.” Something to think about but different does not mean polluting cyberspace with more junk e-mail. Actually, this quiet time is time to savor, to enjoy, to replenish, to refresh, and to get ready for those challenges that will surely come with this New Year. From a policy perspective, many of the challenges have to do with the many ways that the now-dominant Congressional Republicans will attempt to chip away at gains that were made in the last congressional session, including gains in health care. We can say what we will about the timing of health care reform, but the fact is that it is the most progressive economic reform we have seen since the FDR era. It will take tremendous fortitude on the part of Democrats to hold the line on this legislation. Already, people are gearing up for the presidential race in 2012. Will she or won’t she? Sarah Palin should, perhaps, take former First Lady Barbara Bush’s advice and high tail it back to Alaska. For all of her supposed popularity, Palin’s second book has been a non-starter, and although she is said to “study” foreign affairs and other matters, there is that Biblical verse about the sow’s ear and the silk purse. Palin is entertainment, and that’s about it. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour had presidential ambitions but he cannot seem to stop defending the Klan, White Citizen’s Councils, and other racist groups. His fealty to foolishness may play well south of the Mason-Dixon line, but the South is not likely to rise again on this one. So who is left for the Republicans, Mitt Romney? Mike Huckabee? The pickings are pretty slim, though I am prepared to be surprised in 2011. For all the talk of President Obama’s one-term presidency, if the
economy turns around, he will be difficult to beat in 2012. Is the U.S. economy turning around? Unemployment rates remain high, but unemployment is a lagging indicator of economic success. The stock market is doing better than expected, and other indicators seem to suggest that we are on the mend. There is some fear of a “double dip” recession — recovery
Julianne Malveaux not getting enough traction, indicators heading south again, and it is troubling that we cannot expect unemployment rates to drop to 6 or 7 percent until around 2014. President Obama will need to accelerate plans to lower unemployment. He will need an unemployment rate closer to 8 percent to win in 2012. Camus once wrote, “Without work all life is rotten.” He was speaking more spiritually than economically, reflecting on our search for meaning, significance, and passion in our lives. Work generally consumes at least a third of our day, gets us up in the morning, and makes our chest poke out when we answer the question “what do you do.” Work supports and sustains us, pays our bills, puts food on the table and all that good stuff. The need for meaningful employment is one of our most basic needs, one that government must address with industrial policy and job creation efforts. What will our nation look like in 20 years? What kinds of jobs will we have? What kind of training will people need for those jobs? Are we prepared to compete with the rest of the world, especially with China? A snowstorm has blanketed the east coast and there are just a few more days left in 2010. These are quiet times, filled with contemplation and possibilities for new beginnings.

Continued from page 3 Yahoo! and MSN. “In the world of Oprah, from their perspective, they may feel like this is modest and well-controlled,” said Libby Gill, a former TV marketing executive who’s now a brand strategist. Observers may see it as an overwhelming marketing blitz, Gill said, but most of the outreach is “strategically marketed to Oprah’s core fans.” She terms the approach “really smart,” one that gives the channel room to grow. The other key part of the marketing equation is the “where” of OWN, which replaces the Discovery Health channel. To steer people to OWN, available in about 85 million homes, there’s a “channel finder” at Oprah.com with specific area channel numbers. “On New Year’s Day, I want you to be pointed in the right direction,” Schillace said. That’s a daunting mission. The TV forest is crowded with hundreds of cable channels, and OWN’s launching pad isn’t among the most robust: Discovery Health averages around 250,000 daily prime-time viewers, compared with about 3 million for leaders ESPN and USA. Winfrey’s talk show is averaging more than 6 million viewers this season. As OWN unfolds, expect headliners like Shania Twain and Rosie O'Donnell to get more of the promotional spotlight as the channel attempts to steer attention from its namesake to the rest of its 600 hours of original programming. Winfrey’s name “is on the front door (of OWN), but I need to maintain that buzz and hype to show there’s other things on this network as well,” Schillace said. Even a channel topped by the formidable likes of Winfrey must respect the basic imperative of TV, said veteran network executive and producer Garth Ancier. “At the end of the day, I'm very optimistic that Oprah and Peter (Peter Liguori, Discovery Communications’ COO) can build a stable of shows that will define the network — and networks are always defined by their shows, not their branding,” Ancier said.

“Watch our stunning and heartpounding new video featuring so many stars and so much energy that it will leave you breathless,” gushes the online heart of Planet Oprah, Oprah.com, in a section devoted to OWN. The media queen herself is central to an OWN ad that debuted in movie theaters, vowing to bring her talk showcrafted message of self-empowerment to the channel’s bigger canvas. “What if I could take every hero who inspired me, every lesson that motivated me, every opportunity that was ever given to me and give it to you,” says OWN chairman Winfrey, beaming prettily against an unreal blue sky dotted by soaring balloons and puffy clouds. The spot is backed by the song “Own It,” written by the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am for “Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star” and, in a neat bit of synergy, included as a bonus track on the Peas’ new album. (Another pop star, Seal, wrote the theme song for “Weight of My Mistakes,” an OWN series about female prisoners in Indiana.) Barbara Walters helped out by showcasing Winfrey in an hourlong special that aired early in December, well before the planned spring finale of Winfrey’s syndicated daytime talk show but helpfully adjacent to OWN’s debut. Then there’s the Winfrey-driven O magazine, which devotes an impressive chunk of its January issue to the upcoming channel and its stars, including the hosts of “The Gayle King Show” and “Our America with Lisa Ling.” Ads have been placed in other magazines, including Vanity Fair, and on radio and cable. “If they watch TV, we want them to watch more TV,” Schillace said of his targets. Billboards feature Winfrey’s image, with one going up in New York City’s Times Square in January, and ads are carried on buses and taxis. Discovery’s other channels which include TLC and Animal Planet are pitching their new sister station. There’s an online blitz with Facebook postings for specific OWN shows, as well as home page takeovers and OWN messages splashed on websites including

Guineans Swear in First President To Be Democratically Elected SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE GLOBAL INFORMATION NETWORK Numerous African heads of state and government officials arrived in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, to take part in the swearing-in ceremony of Alpha Conde, a long-time opposition leader, as president of the West African nation. “I say loud and clear: poverty and underdevelopment in the Republic of Guinea does not have to be our destiny,” said the 72-year-old Conde, who narrowly defeated his rival, Cellou Dalein Diallo, in the November vote. “I will try in my small way to be Guinea’s (Nelson) Mandela and unite

every son of Guinea,” Conde said after taking his oath. “The restoration of social cohesion and national unity requires a collective look at our painful past.” Conde’s election marks an end to half a century of despotism and military rule in the nation, which is extremely poor despite rich mineral wealth, and remains ethnically divided. The ceremony included a minute’s silence in memory of the 157 opposition supporters murdered by forces loyal to former junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara at a stadium in the capital in September 2009. Conde has already promised a South African-style truth and reconciliation commission to examine atrocities ranging from the recent violence to the use of starvation cells to execute dissidents under Sekou Toure, Guinea’s first president.

Braun, the race’s other leading black candidate, joined the U.S. Senate the same year Clinton became president, and he was always supportive of her, Cobb said. Clinton appointed Braun as ambassador to New Zealand after she lost her Senate reelection bid. Messages left for Braun’s campaign weren’t immediately returned. Clinton — who Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison once dubbed the country’s first black president — still enjoys a great deal of support among black voters, and Davis said part of his concern is about Clinton’s impact on the mayor’s race. “I think he certainly has some sway and power,” Davis said. “He’s still a tremendous draw.” But Cobb wasn’t convinced that Clinton’s popularity would translate into votes. She and other black leaders want Clinton to stay on the sidelines because “a president shouldn’t inject himself in a local mayoral race. He’s an international figure.” “This is not something he should
be a part of, especially when he has no direct ties to Chicago,” Cobb said. “He is bigger than this.” While Davis said his message to Clinton was meant to be a friendly appeal, the tone of his statement was more direct, suggesting that the former president would lose black support if he campaigned for Emanuel. “The African-American community has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the Clintons, however it appears as though some of that relationship maybe fractured and perhaps even broken should former President Clinton come to town and participate overtly in efforts to thwart the legitimate political aspirations of Chicago’s Black community,” the statement said. Cobb echoed that sentiment, saying that if Clinton visits Chicago for Emanuel, “it would appear that the president was supporting a white man over Hispanic and African-American and women candidates, and I’m sure that's not … the perception the president wants to project.”

Black Harvard doctor pens memoir of Jim Crow South BY RUSSELL CONTRERAS ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON — Growing up in segregated Memphis, Tenn., during the Jim Crow era, Augustus White III knew about those certain places off-limits to him as a black man — restrooms, diners and schools. He just didn’t pay racial barriers much mind. The son of a doctor and teacher became the first African-American to graduate from Stanford Medical School, the first AfricanAmerican resident and surgery professor at Yale and later the first black department head at Harvard’s teaching hospitals. Now 74 and one of the nation’s leading orthopedic surgeons, White is releasing a memoir on his life. The book, “Seeing Patients: Unconscious Bias in Health Care” (Harvard University Press, $27.95), is also a call for more diversity in the medical field and the end to health care disparities, something the Harvard professor calls “the last frontier of racial prejudice.” White said the book, scheduled for release next month, has been a lifelong project that began when he served in the Army as a surgeon during the Vietnam War. “I kept a journal and saw a lot of horrible things. Over time, that changed me,” said White, who considered calling the book “A Black Surgeon in Vietnam.”
Among horrors he remembers was treating servicemen — black, white and Latino — who had body parts blown off. “Pain is an equalizer, and, of course, the greatest equalizer of all is death, of which I saw plenty,” White writes. “Death is the equal opportunity employer.” He left the Army a strong opponent of the war. Returning to civilian life, White said he soon became passionate about increasing ethnic diversity in the medical profession and fighting disparities in health care. It’s something he reminds colleagues whenever he speaks and attends medical conferences. “He’s built the infrastructure in his profession that when he speaks, we listen,” said John Feagin, a retired orthopedic surgeon who lives in Vail, Colo., and was White’s roommate in Vietnam. “I’m just delighted with his book. There’s a lot in there about his life that I didn’t know.” White, born in Memphis to a middleclass family, said he noticed at a young age how few times blacks and whites interacted “except maybe at the nightclubs and brothels on Beale Street.” When White was 8, his father, Augustus White Jr., died suddenly, probably of a heart attack. That left White to be raised by an extended network of family and friends who often pushed and supported him during his unique educational path. At 13, White was accepted to the largely

White writes that the experience prepared him to enter Brown University, where he became the first African-American president of his fraternity. “Each time I became the first black to do this or that, I knew people back in Memphis knew about it,” White said during a recent interview in his office. “Sometimes, when I went home to visit, they didn’t even have to say anything. I knew they knew, and I had their support. That’s all that mattered.” But during his journey through medical school in other parts of the country, the Civil Rights Movement began to spread and a young White started to feel like he was missing out. “It wasn’t until a mentor of mine at the University of Michigan told me, ‘You don’t worry about that right now. That’s not your role. You will be in position to make real changes one day. Just keep doing what you are doing,’ ” White said. “I never forgot that because he was right.” Soon after his residency in Michigan, White decided to study orthopedics at Yale. Why orthopedics? “I noticed very quickly that the orthopedic surgeons were the happiest,” he said. By becoming orthopedic chief at Harvard, White admitted, he could have lost
touch with his past while walking in circles of the wealthy and Harvard-connected. But White, who now lives in Weston, Mass., said he couldn’t forget those in Memphis and mentors who helped him, even at a time when helping an African-American was dangerous. That has pushed him to his new mission: fighting health care disparities that exist among blacks, Latinos and gays four decades after the Civil Rights Movement. For example, White said evidence shows that blacks receive less pain medication for the same injuries as whites and Latinos received less angioplasty and bypass surgery for heart disease than whites. His solution is stressing “culturally competent care” — a commitment by medical professionals to be responsive to different values, language barriers and attitudes of patients that could influence how health care is received. It’s not a new idea, White said, but it’s rarely elevated in debates over health care reforms. “He’s dead-on in terms of the bias we have and don’t even acknowledge,” Feagin said. “That includes not just bias in terms of race but also those who are obese.” White said teaching the public about culturally competent care will remain a mission for the rest of his life. “If I can do anything in my power to make people aware of this bias that affects all of us,” said White, “then I think I’ve completed my mission.”
