BY FUNGAI MABOREKE The spectacle of anarchy unfolding in Britain’s low-income neighborhoods of Black Africans, South Asians and others has prompted mixed reactions from African, Caribbean and Asian communities around the world.

Widespread riots have been

viewed on the Internet, which shows looting, burning buildings and vehicles and attacks against civilians and even the police. The disturbances were reportedly triggered by the death of a Black London man and father of 4, Mark Duggan, 29, believed to have been caught in a cross fire of police shooting in a raid called Operation Trident.

Somali man tries to raise children without mother

BY MALKHADIR M. MUHUMED ASSOCIATED PRESS DADAAB, Kenya (AP) — First Aden Ali Mohamed’s 25-year-old wife died just days after giving birth to twins. Then his newborn son succumbed to malnutrition. His baby girl did not survive either, leaving the Somali man to now raise his surviving children alone in a refugee camp.

Mohamed says it’s been difficult to find work when he must always look after 4-year-old Ibrahim and 2?-year-old Sharmarke, who do not even know yet that their mother is dead.

Black activist Lee Jasper from Brixton said the riots could be traced to alienated youth, low-paying or no jobs, lack of opportunities and “crap” housing. He accused the government of cutting youth projects and suggested re-investing millions of pounds recovered from criminal assets.

Smiley lashes out at Povery Tour critics SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE WASHINGTON INFORMER TV personality Tavis Smiley and Princeton professor Cornel West have taken a licking as they near the end of their 18-city Poverty Tour, which included stops in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. The bus trips have been aimed at bringing President Barack Obama’s attention to the plight of America’s poor people, according to Smiley and West, but particularly Blacks whose jobless rate exceeds 15 percent.

There have been mixed reactions to the tour. While some residents in Obama’s Chicago hometown say that the president has been doing all he can to bring the economy back on track, others have conveyed that he could still do more to get Black people back to work. (Interestingly, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Black unemployment in Chicago has

risen from 13.1 percent in 2008 to 20.3 percent.)

“They are not really giving him a chance,” Kyshandra Jackson, 26, reportedly said of Obama during the Chicago stopover. Jackson, who had just returned to work after a year of trying to find a job, added, “Things are going to get done, but it is also going to take some time. He is doing more than everybody else tried to do.”

To the contrary, Lamont Robinson, a 29-year-old insurance agent, voiced his frustration, saying Obama was disconnected with Chicago. “Say the word ‘poor,’ Mr. President. We want to hear you say it!” Robinson shouted during the meeting.

Meanwhile, Smiley and West have been branded as self-serving Obama haters. And comedian Steve Harvey recently referred to the pair as “Uncle Toms.”

Mohamed broke down several times as he spoke to The Associated Press about his plight, especially when talking of the pain of raising children alone without support from relatives. Somalia is a predominantly Muslim, deeply conservative country where women bear the primary responsibility for tending to children.

Somalia, saying it is better to starve than accept help from the West.

Many Somalis, like Mohamed and his family, make the harrowing journey to neighboring Kenya on foot. He carried one of his sons while his pregnant wife carried on their 19day journey.

“We didn’t eat anything else other than what strangers give us,” he said. “We normally started the journey early in the morning and walked for about five hours. We rested a bit and in the early evening we resumed our journey.”

But their hopes for a better life in Kenya were short-lived, and now Mohamed says he’s struggling to raise his young sons far from the support network of his extended family.

“I believe in God, but when I recall what happened to me I feel my heart was ripped out,” he says. “I sometimes pray and ask God to give me power to withstand this nightmare. I haven’t felt happiness since I came here – only my sadness has increased.”

Mohamed has five other children and a second wife who stayed behind in Somalia with relatives, but despite his loneliness and pain he doesn’t plan to go back anytime soon.

“I’m afraid that they may die of hunger because they live with poor relatives. The ones with me are suffering, but are not hungry,” he says.

“I will not return to Somalia because the problems that forced me to leave there still exist.”

Obama attacks GOP field on bus tour

BY JIM KUHNHENN ASSOCIATED PRESS DECORAH, Iowa (AP) — Hitting back against an emboldened GOP, President Barack Obama launched a rare direct attack Monday on the Republican presidential field, criticizing his potential 2012 rivals for their blanket opposition to any deficit-cutting compromise involving new taxes. “That’s just not common sense,” Obama told the crowd at a town hall-style meeting in Cannon Falls, Minn., as he kicked off a three-day bus tour through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.

“You’ve got to be willing to compromise to move the country forward,” the president said later in the day as he delivered the same message at a town hall in Decorah,

Iowa. At the same time Obama was forced to defend his own record as Iowa voters asked him about all the compromises he’s made with the GOP. “I make no apologies for being reasonable,” Obama declared as he stood in front of a cheery red barn, surrounded by bales of hay. The president recalled a moment in last week’s GOP presidential debate when all eight of the candidates said they would refuse to support a deal with tax increases, even if tax revenues were outweighed 10-to-1 by spending cuts.

Obama didn’t mention any of the candidates by name, and prefaced the remark by saying, “I know it’s not election season yet.”

But his comment underscored that election season is indeed under

way. The bus tour—an official White House event rather than a campaign swing—is taking Obama through three states he won in 2008 but where he now needs to shore up his standing.

It’s giving him a chance to return to the grassroots campaigning that helped propel him to the White House, and shed his jacket and tie to mix it up with voters in coffee shops and lunch joints far from the Beltway—as he did in three unscheduled stops Monday, including one in a tree-lined Minnesota town where he was swarmed by enthusiastic kids.

The president is traveling in an imposing new $1.1 million bus, outfitted with tinted windows and flashing lights, which the Secret Service purchased.

Local sports hero donates to the Brotherhood Crusade So often when a local sports figure “makes it” in the big league, he or she sometimes finds it hard to reach back. Well, that is not the case with James Cotton.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in San Pedro, Cotton has really made it big. He is a former NBA basketball player, real estate broker and concert promoter for Up Beat Ent. Productions.

After attending Los Angeles Unified School District schools, he went to Artesia High School in Lakewood, where he was a starter on the team, which included two other sophomores. There he won the CIF championship.

Cotton finished at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, where he was first-team all-CIF two years. He received a full basketball scholarship to Long Beach State after turning down scholarships to USC, UNLV, Wyoming and Santa Barbara.

He started three years ago at Long Beach State and turned pro after his junior year, with an average of 23.5 points a game, and in 2007, he was the third pick of the second round. Cotton played three years in the NBA, in

Poland and in Australia.

In 2001, he became a real estate broker. Recently, he has been working as a concert promoter for Up Beat Ent. Productions, working with some of the biggest artists in the industry, including Rick Ross, E-40, Too Short, Baby Bash, Miguel, Jagged Edge, Carl Thomas, Case, Lil Jon, Soulja Boy, Ginuwine, Faith Evans and Jon B. preparation for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, attacking the president at every turn. The bus tour came on the heels of Rep. Michele Bachmann’s weekend victory in the Iowa Straw Poll and Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s contest-rattling entrance into the race.

It also came after the president spent much of the summer holed up in the nation’s capital enmeshed in bitter, partisan negotiations on the debt crisis that cratered his approval ratings and those of Congress amid a faltering economy and high unemployment.

The president got a rosy reception from his Minnesota audience, but Iowa voters were a tougher crowd, demanding to know why he’d compromised on principles important to Democrats, and asking

to hear his plans for dealing with intransigent Republicans.

The president responded by pledging to present a specific jobs plan to Congress when lawmakers return from their summer recess in September. “And if they don’t get it done, then we’ll be running against a Congress that’s not doing anything for the American people and the choice will be very stark and very clear,” the president said.

At both town hall meetings, Obama used questions on his health care bill to take hard shots at Mitt Romney, the GOP front-runner, who has had to defend implementing a health care plan while governor of Massachusetts that’s similar to the federal version.

Army’s drill sergeant single moms face challenges

BY SUSANNE M. SCHAFER ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) — Few women make it into the ranks of the Army’s top drill sergeants; even fewer when they face the challenge of being a single parent. But there they are, running fresh recruits through the grueling boot camp that welcomes every new soldier.

To juggle childrearing with a job that features 18-hour days and six-day weeks, the women take different paths: One sent her two daughters to live with relatives in Tennessee, one drops her son and daughter at an Army-run day care center at 4:30 a.m., while a third woman’s own mother moved from Texas to care for her 7-year-old granddaughter.

“You just have to build a big extended family,” said Drill Sgt. Esasha LeBlanc, a 10-year-Army veteran with a 10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. “It’s like being sent to war.”

The 30-year-old LeBlanc is one of 74 female drill sergeants at Fort Jackson who are single parents, out of the 207 women holding the job at the training post this summer. By contrast, 39 of 523 male drill sergeants are single parents, Army officials said.

The number of women in the ranks has increased since basic combat training for both men and women was more widely introduced in 1994. Male and female drill sergeants train both sexes in combined units during the 10-week boot

camp that all new recruits go through.

Fort Jackson trains half the Army’s male soldiers and more than 60 percent of its female soldiers every year. Altogether, 60,000 soldiers train here every year to fill the Army’s ranks of 570,000 men and women.

Fort Jackson began training women to become drill sergeants in 1972, but they only trained other women until 1977. When the draft ended in 1973, women were eligible for only 9 percent of the military’s jobs and composed only 2.5 percent of the ranks; now 14 percent are women.

The number of women in the military swelled in the 1990s, when Congress began opening up more military jobs to them. Military leaders now say they can’t go to war without them: the Pentagon says about 255,000 women from all military services served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lori Manning, director of the Women in the Military program for the Women’s Research & Education Institute in Washington, D.C., said the Army needs female drill sergeants to provide a “strong role model of a successful enlisted woman” for both male and female trainees.

Barracks and sleeping quarters are separated by the sexes, so trainers have to rely on each other to deal with any issues that might come up among their trainees around the clock, Manning said.

Manning, a retired Navy captain, said the presence of male and female trainers helps them “teach each other

the ropes” when it comes to dealing with troops of the other sex.

Lawrence Korb, a former assistant secretary of defense for personnel in the Reagan administration, said the Army represents the nation it protects when it makes accommodations for single parents with children.

“Single parents are a part of our society. The military reflects that and has to deal with it,” said Korb, now a defense analyst and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington.

Real PROFITS BEHIND THE

FOR-PROFIT SCHOOLS

“My life changed with one phone call” is usually the advertising claim.

A young minority student turned actor is most often doing the pitching.

“If I can do it, so can you,” he or she says.

The words and images inundate billboards, bus cards, benches and are cleverly interwoven between court shows and “trash talk” TV. Their purpose: to induce people to “come down to the college or get online and enroll” in a for-profit school. Supposedly, in as short a time as eight months, a prospective student can go from financial struggle to a new car, a nice home and dining out if only they would enroll in an online school—or so the advertisements go.

For some, perhaps it is that easy. However, thousands of students and potential students across the United States have filled online complaint boards with stories that severely contradict the advertising claims.

Once they inquired about enrollment, said complainants, they became the victims of aggressive sales tactics and, for those who enrolled, a bait-and-switch scam.

This scam school said they were gonna help me get a job, and nothing. I have looked at months and months of job want ads and I am still jobless … They don’t tell you when you’re first going to enroll in the school that they’re not going to do anything for you. They don’t tell you they’re gonna set you up for failure, they don’t tell you they’re gonna take your money and F*** you with no Vaseline … ” Others like Jay complained about schools like Everest, UEI, American Career

...these schools prey on the most uneducated and poorest...

Grievances include credits that don’t transfer to other colleges, classes where no actual teaching takes place, extremely high tuition fees that force students to take out loans, classes that are “worthless, with incompetent professors” and employers who don’t consider for-profit to be true graduates.

Considering those claims, this reporter called human resources personnel at a few medical clinics and employment agencies here in Los Angeles.

“We do hire people from for-profit colleges,” said an H.R. employee at UCLA Medical. “[But] hiring mainly depends on work history and experience, and if you’re certified in your particular area it doesn’t matter what school you came from. The key thing is finding that place that’s going to give you a shot at gaining real work experience.”

Personnel at California Medical Center agreed.

“It really depends on the person,” said an H.R. rep there, when asked if they hire students from forprofit colleges.

In fact, some responses on the online complaint boards reiterate this point, naming character traits like self-discipline and initiative as the real keys to success regardless of the school. But self-disciplined, diligent people are not who for- profits target, say opponents. Most students they say are not even college-ready.

“Having done some teaching for a for-profit college,” wrote one commenter on hotair.com, “The students can barely read or write, the pressure is to pass everyone with a ‘B’ or better [and] the students learn nothing … These schools prey on the most uneducated and poorest … ” This reporter’s initial visit to a for-profit website yielded an almost immediate response. any questions. My main question was about the cost.

“How much does the medical administrative assistant course cost compared to what I will make at the job,” I asked.

“I don’t know,” she typed back. “You will have to make an appointment to come and talk to an administrator. Can you give me your phone number?”

I did. I received a call that ended with the confirmation of a 1:00 pm appointment for 2 days later. I received about 10 phone calls from school personnel for those two days.

I missed the initial appointment but came in a few days later to ask for some general information. Again, I wanted to know the cost. I was taken to a cubicle where an enrollment representative asked what program I’d be interested in.

“Medical administrative assistant,” I replied, asking how long the course would take.

After evading my questions a few times, the rep finally told me that the course would be eight months at a total of about $19,000. If I wasn’t eligible for a loan, I would have to start paying $2,300 a month for the course upon admission. She encouraged me to talk to someone in the Financial Aid Department to see what I would be eligible for because the classes “might not cost me anything.”

She did not tell me, however, that the school and others like it reportedly get at least 80 percent of their revenue from those who are eligible for government financial aid mainly in the form of loans, for which the students are ultimately responsible.

Meanwhile, U.S. Labor Board statistics show that medical assistants earn between $25,000 and almost $30,000 yearly. A student will pay between $10,000to-$20,000 at a for-profit, compared to between $200to-$2,000 at a public non-profit, to get certified in a vocation like massage therapist, medical or dental assistant or computer drafting, according to data released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

For an Associate’s degree, fees range between $30,000 and $40,000 compared to the public nonprofits’ $2,900 and $5,600. The gap closes somewhat for Bachelor’s degrees, with for-profits ranging from $46,000 to about $65,000 compared to public non-

profits ranging from $25,000 to $52,000.

Earlier this year the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions obtained documents that revealed questionable recruiting practices from at least three major for-profits.

Tactics included tapping into the “fear and pain” of prospective students and honing in on people who fit certain “profiles” like “welfare mom with kids” or “physically/ mentally abused.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, “Students at for-profit institutions represent 12 percent of all higher education students, 26 percent of all student loans and 46 percent of all student loan dollars in default. The median federal student loan debt carried by students earning associate degrees at forprofit institutions was $14,000, while the majority of students at community colleges do not borrow. More than a quarter of for-profit institutions receive 80 percent of their revenues from taxpayer-financed federal student aid … ” In June 2011, the Institute for Higher Education Policy released a report that stated: 1) Compared with young adults not in poverty, low-income students are underrepresented in public and private four-year institutions, while being overrepresented in for-profit institutions.

2) Poor females on the whole were twice as likely as poor males to start at for-profit institutions.

3) More Black and Hispanic females from poor backgrounds started in for-profit institutions than in both public and private four-year institutions combined.

“These findings are key to understanding how the demand for postsecondary education of vulnerable populations is being met, as well as the potential short- and long-term detriment to persistence and degree attainment of poor young females who attend such institutions, characterized by high levels of unmet need and substantial borrowing,” IHEP experts concluded.

Also in June, the DOE issued “Gainful Employment” regulations. The new rules state that institutions will not be eligible to receive federal money unless they “meet at least one of the following three metrics:

At least 35 percent of former students are repaying their loans; or the estimated annual loan payment of a typical graduate does not exceed 30 percent of his or her discretionary income; or the estimated annual loan payment of a typical graduate does not exceed 12 percent of his or her total earnings.”

In addition, institutions are now required to disclose total program costs, earning potential upon completing the program and loan interest rates to consumers up front. Schools have three times to meet the requirements. Failing to do so could mean a wait time of three years before the institution is eligible to participate in student aid programs.

USC’s 20010 tailback starter Marc Tyler may be the man out if he ever returns from his one game or more suspension. Tyler will be behind a parade of tailbacks, which have been impressive in pre-season practices.

Included in USC’s group of tailback contenders are Dillon Baxter, D.J. Morgan, Curtis McNeal, Amir Carlisle and Hunter Simmons.

North Carolina has tabbed an African American to clean up the university’s NCAA scandals mess. He’s Everett Withers the university’s head coach on an interim basis. Withers were promoted from his defensive coordinator position. This is a first for North Carolina. Withers replaces Butch Davis, who was fired nine days before the start of practice.

Did you realize Walter O’Malley brought the Dodgers to L.A. 53-years ago? And in this 53rd year this is the worst Dodgers team since O’Malley brought club. West. Shame on you Frank and Jamie McCourt, the Dodgers wreckers.

Matt Kemp swiped his 30th base on Aug. 10 and also smacked four hits to match his one game high in 2011.

Check This: The Minnesota Vikings’ rookie coach Leslie Frazier was the Philadelphia Eagles’ secondary coach in QB Donovan McNabb’s first four years in Philly. Frazier’s confidence in McNabb has him satisfied: “It means a bunch. He knows the type of player I am.”

Is QB David Garrard really out in Jacksonville? According to USA Today: “Garrard is out and Blaine Gabbert is in and Todd Bouman (39years old) is again off the tractor.”

Yes folks, Tiger was off his game in the PGA Championship tournament big time. Tiger says his next start will be in the Australian Open in November. Question: Will O.J. Simpson receive residuals from the just released DVD of the first season of the TV drama, Medical Center starring Chad Everett? If so O.J. will be receiving a hold lot of those pretty little ones from behind prison bars.

The Texas Rangers Ron Washington is the only African Manager with a chance to make the playoffs in the AL. For that matter that includes the NL too. Washington’s Rangers (69-52) lead the second place L.A. Angels (65-56) by four games.

Black quarterbacks are popping up all over in both college and in the NFL. One of the most celebrated African American QBs in college football is LSU’s Jordan Jefferson. He’s the cover boy on the current edition of the Sporting News. The SN ranks LSU No. 1 on its top ten list. The 6-5 and 224 pound Jefferson will be on display Sept. 3 against mighty Oregon’s black QB Darron Thomas. Another QB of color who bears watching is West Virginia’s Geno Smith, who passed for 2,763 yards last season.

Willie McGinest’s comedy show raises $8,000 for charity McGinest discusses some of his motivations and goals for giving back to his hometown.

BY MICHAEL BROWN L.A. WATTS TIMES CONTRIBUTOR During his 14-year NFL career, three-time Super Bowl champion Willie McGinest’s name became synonymous with winning. These days, it’s fair to say that the Long Beach native’s gridiron success has been carried over to both his charitable and business involvements.

Since graduating from Long Beach Poly High School in 1990 and going on to star at USC, McGinest has been a stalwart supporter of charity.

Recently, McGinest helped organize an all-star lineup of comedians to perform at “The Comedy Explosion,” with all proceeds benefiting the Willie McGinest Charitable Gift Fund.

“We’ve been doing dinners and auctions all over,” McGinest told the Watts Times prior to the late-July event at the Laugh Factory in Long Beach.

“With the recession and many people going through rough times, a come-

dy show to benefit charity seemed like the right thing to do,” he continued.

“The venue was available and it’s for a good cause, so we made it happen.”

The crowd was treated to non-stop comedy from comedians such as Red Grant, Scruncho, Rodney Perry and comedienne Cocoa Brown among others.

The event’s host, Speedy, said he introduced the idea of holding a comedy benefit for charity to McGinest.

Once McGinest agreed, Speedy said they collaborated in assembling the lineup.

“There are so many kids that need help,” Speedy said. “Maybe that young man who lives in a tough neighborhood in Long Beach will see Willie coming back to the community and doing something positive and decide to follow his example.”

Choosing the event’s venue wasn’t merely a coincidence. McGinest said he made a concerted effort to place the charitable event in Long Beach. “My team and I always want to come back to

Long Beach and do things for the kids and help give them hope,” he said.

“There’s a lot of redevelopment in the area, so why not use this gem (Laugh Factory).”

Redevelopment and eliminating blight in Long Beach are two issues the ex-linebacker has been tackling since 2009. In June, McGinest announced plans to bring The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf to a lot where a liquor store once stood for more than 30 years.

In 2009, the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency partnered with McGinest’s Wilmac Enterprises Inc., for the development of a commercial project, according to a Long Beach Press-Telegram report. McGinest also recently confirmed a franchise agreement with three WingStop restaurants in

Southern California, including one in Long Beach.

Aside from the evening’s laughs, Speedy emphasized to the crowd how young people would benefit from the event’s proceeds. In fact, he went to great lengths to see to it that attendees gave a little extra. How? He placed a bucket on stage for donations between each performers act.

Eight thousand dollars was raised at the sold-out event, according to a representative for McGinest’s 55 Entertainment. The Gift Fund’s mission, according to McGinest’s website, is to “identify and support education, social needs and sports activities of youth in inner-city communities throughout the United States.”

McGinest has held true to his char-

ity’s mission. He worked towards the social benefit of youth during his stay in both New England and Cleveland.

Locally, several causes have been recipients of grants awarded by the Gift Fund, including Long Beach Browns Pop Warner football; the Success and Challenges School in Long Beach; and the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles.

“My goal at this point is just to give back and try to touch a lot of different lives,” McGinest said. “It’s kind of like my job from here on out to do positive. That’s been my plan from day one, and I‘ll continue to let that guide me for the future.”

UNCF: An Evening of Stars As its theme, “Educating our future,” the UNCF came to the Southland to put on its annual gala event and to showcase some of its success stories — the students

SIMMONDS CO-MANAGING EDITOR Last weekend the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) put on its annual “An Evening of Stars” gala event, which attracted an enviable lineup of stars and was attended by an A-list group of supporters. It was the 33rd edition of the event and it had a national sponsorship roster.

It is important to tell the UNCF’s story and how it advances the education of primarily Black students who otherwise would not be able to achieve their dream of a quality education. As a philanthropic organization, the UNCF

raises college tuition money and general scholarship funds for 39 private historically black colleges and universities. Some previous years, it has supported approximately 65,000 students with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships. UNCF also administers over 450 named scholarships.

Since 2004, Dr. Michael Lomax has been president and chief executive officer of UNCF. Before coming to UNCF, he was president of UNCFmember institution Dillard University in New Orleans and a literature professor at UNCF member institutions

BY DR. BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS, JR. NNPA COLUMNIST This is a well deserved salute to two global icons of hip-hop culture. Two successful Black men who transcend race and social division have attained the pinnacle of worldwide impact with their artistic genius and empowerment consciousness. Jay-Z and Kanye West, with the release of their latest album, “Watch the Throne,” are revealing the sustainable power of hip-hop not only in America but also throughout the world.

At a time when the prevailing commentary about Black people in America, Africa, the Caribbean and throughout the Pan African world is too often focused almost solely on the pathology and the negative statistics and realities about our socioeconomic plight, it is refreshing to witness two brothers from different neighborhoods in the United States work together to produce the next level of music and international consciousness.

But their recent achievement, in my view, goes way beyond the success of selling millions of music albums. Jay-Z and Kanye West together represent an evolving genre of new entrepreneurial giants that are helping to sustain a new economy and philanthropy for our communities that pushes the envelope on advancing African American economic development.

Knowing and affirming one’s own self-worth is a fundamental key to career success. Everyone is blessed with different skills, talent and opportunities. I am not encouraging everyone to try to be a rapper or a poet. But I am encouraging that we all should strive to identify what your skills, special talents or interests are.

It is good to a have a career goal and the self-determination, dedication and proper education to attain and fulfill your life goal. The inventiveness and creativity within the hip-hip community continues to be outstanding for those who know the benefit of hard work, study, practice, preparation and diligence. Jay-Z and Kanye West are still on their grind, and their productivity is inspiring a younger generations of poets, rappers and other performing artists, designers, videographers, producers, financial managers, entrepreneurs, and developers to take full advantage of all the opportunities at hand.

Jon Caramanica in The New York Times characterized Jay-Z and Kanye

West as “two titans” that “share the seat of power.” Caramanica observed, “Making relevant socially themed songs in an age of financial and political unrest is a challenge these two artists at least pay lip service to. Like a charitable donation, it’s a combination of maturity and duty.”

Jay-Z and Kanye West have become “brothers in the struggle” for freedom, justice, equality and empowerment. Their artistic grind gives rise to a generation of young people throughout the world who are impatient with poverty and injustice, but who have the audacity to speak out and speak up with a bold creativity that will be welcomed by a billion youth across the globe.

Empowerment first takes place in your mind and consciousness. Hip-hop is about not only having high aspirations or goals and objectives; it is also about having the courage, work-ethic and the capacity to attain to fulfill your dreams and aspirations. Jay-Z and Kanye West know firsthand what overcoming poverty is all about — from the streets of the hood to the corporate suites of power —without losing your soul, spirit and sense of self-worth.

In this unique collaboration, there is a certain cultural dignity and integrity that penetrates and lifts up all people who cry out for a better quality of life.

“Watch the Throne” is an album that shatters the complacency and hopelessness that is currently undergirding the worldwide cynicism of those who prefer to acquiesce to the status-quo of do-nothingness and apathy.

I personally know these two young men. They represent the best of hip-hop and will encourage others to continue to bring to the forefront more gems of creativity as they both “take back responsibility” to give back to their respective communities the best gift of all: transcendent hope and self-empowerment.

As we prepare to mobilized the largest youth vote in history for the 2012 elections next year, “Watch the Throne” will help all of us to “Watch the White House” again with massive voter registration, turnout, and civic revitalization.

As an OG, I am grateful to Jay-Z and Kanye West for paving the path for generations to come.

Judge throws out suit against ‘The Help’ author

BY HOLBROOK MOHR ASSOCIATED PRESS JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Did Kathryn Stockett use her brother’s African American maid as the basis for a character in the bestselling novelturned-movie “The Help”?

For now, that question may go unanswered — by a court anyway.

A Mississippi judge threw out a lawsuit Tuesday in which Ablene Cooper alleged Stockett used her likeness without permission in a book about relationships between White families and their Black maids in the segregated South of the 1960s.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green granted a motion for summary judgment, dismissing the case because a one-year statute of limitations had elapsed between when Stockett gave Cooper a copy of the book and when the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit sought $75,000 in damages.

Stockett was not in court in Jackson, the same city where the book is set.

Cooper wiped away tears as she left the courtroom, then launched into a tirade outside the courthouse. “She’s a liar. She did it. She knows she did it,” Cooper screamed.

The judge did not make any determination on whether Cooper was the basis for the character Aibileen, saying the statute of limitations trumped those matters.

Besides the similarities in names, Cooper’s lawsuit says she lost a son shortly before going to work for Stockett’s brother, where she takes care of two children, a boy and a girl.

Cooper’s lawsuit says that’s the same as the character portrayed in the book.

Sanders, told The Associated Press he will consider the legal options available, including an appeal.

Melissa Broder, Stockett’s publicist, had no comment. One of Stockett’s attorneys, Fred Banks Jr., had no immediate comment either, saying he would release a statement later.

Stockett’s defense team argued in court papers that Cooper and the character are not that similar. “ ‘The Help’ does not use Mrs. Ablene Cooper’s name. It uses the name Aibileen Clark. It does not paint a picture of Mrs. Ablene Cooper, middleaged in 2011. It paints the picture of Aibileen Clark, middle-aged in 1962,” the lawyers said in court filings.

Stockett’s attorneys said in court records that Aibileen is based on the late Demetrie McLorn, the Stockett family’s housekeeper, who died when the author was a teenager.

“The Help” was made into a movie that opened last week. It debuted at No. 2 nationwide, bringing in $26 million.

The lawsuit says Stockett’s refusal to acknowledge that she based the character on Cooper’s likeness “is so outrageous in character, and so extreme as to go beyond all bounds of human decency, and is utterly intolerable in a civilized community.”

The suit also says that during a 2009 interview with The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Stockett said: “When I was writing this book, I never thought anyone else would read it, so I didn’t get real creative with the names.

I just used people I knew. Some of them aren’t talking to me right now, but I feel like they’ll come around.”

During times of war, they all must have detailed plans in place to designate who cares for the children while a parent is deployed, he said.

Drill Sgt. Pamela Bethea, 29, from Memphis, Tenn., has two daughters living with relatives in Memphis.

“We are like family,” Bethea said, noting she helps LeBlanc by picking up her children or watching over them during breaks in training.

She misses her own children greatly, she said, but added, “I know they are in good hands. I have no worries about them.”

LeBlanc is a staff sergeant and human resource specialist who has served with Special Operations forces.

She has 36 parachute jumps with airborne units to her credit and has been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

Army officials said about 96 percent of its drill instructors have been deployed to combat zones.

At the end of a training day, LeBlanc picks up 10-year-old son Karim and 8-year-old daughter Asiyanna from a Fort Jackson day care center that is open until 9 p.m.

LeBlanc said going home to her children is something that helps her deal with the stress of molding civilians into warriors.

“I need my family time to keep me sane,” she said. Stealing a quick moment over lunch with her children, they chattered about their morning trip to a water park and play times with other soldiers’ children.

“My best friend has a drill sergeant mom!” chirped Asiyanna.

“I want to be a soldier like my mom when I grow up,” Karim chimed in, as LeBlanc offered a rueful smile.

All too soon, she wrapped them in hugs and yet another goodbye kiss. “Be good!” she admonished them, heading back to her uniformed charges.

All drill sergeants are volunteers, Army officials say, and many take on the grueling hours for several reasons.

“Drill sergeants have to be committed to their soldiers,” said Fort Jackson’s top enlisted man, Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Stall, 45. “They have to be inspirational, knowledgeable and flexible. My hat goes off to them.”

Drill Sergeant Tiera Sprauve, 26, said she is able to stay at work because her mother, a retired Navy food service operator, decided to move from Texas, quit her job and help care for her 7year-old granddaughter Deja.

“She’s holding my home together.

I don’t know how I would have done this job without her,” Sprauve said.

Sprauve’s 49-year-old mother,

Gloria, said she wanted her daughter to achieve things in the military that she never could. Women didn’t serve aboard ships when she was in the Navy.

“I want her to know that anything is attainable,” her mother said. “She got her promotion because she was able to be a drill sergeant.”

Sprauve, awaiting final word on her promotion to staff sergeant, said she signed up for a third year of drill sergeant duty because she wants to keep her daughter in the same school near Fort Jackson as long as she can.

“I am really blessed,” she said. “I will be in the Army till they force me out.”

When Sheryl Underwood came on, she focused on all the presidents of the Black sororities and fraternities — the Divine Nine — who lined up across the stage, and as previously done, each speaker urged the audience to text and donate.

Jill Scott was next and she sang like only she could, belting out a unique number that the audience just loved. And then there was Jill Marie Jones (of “Girlfriends” fame), she introduced Musiq Soulchild.

Dr. Lomax came back on stage and emphasized, “Tonight there are many stars but the real stars are the students.”

When Tatyana Ali came on stage, she told the story of herself being a longtime supporter of UNCF and how the fund assisted her to go to Harvard University. She also highlighted, in conjunction with a video, one of UNCF's star students, Barrington Irving, the youngest person to fly around the world, and who now has his own non-profit organization, Experienced Aviation, teaching young students the intricacies of aviation.

Other ‘success’ students mentioned earlier included Anthony Middlebrook, an Iraq veteran who continuously made the dean’s list and graduated summa cum laude, he was studying to be a lawyer; Dr. Angel Byrd (M.D & Ph.D.) she was studying how to combat diseases; Curtis Brown; Kevon Williams; Fatima Barbrick; Eric Marks, a Boeing intern; Delrisha White and Raviin

Evans (they were brought up on stage); and Amber Thomas.

About the 2011 event, Dr. Lomax stated, “UNCF/AEOS this year tells the important story of UNCF’s work to help young people achieve their dreams of achieving a college education. Our goal is to help double the numbers of AfricanAmericans who earn a college a degree. To do that, UNCF is awarding 10,000 scholarships a year and supporting 38 private historically black colleges. UNCF An Evening of Stars is a wonderful entertainment celebration of the work we do and the lives we change, but it is also a call to action to our community to donate and support our work so we can help more students realize their dream of a college degree.”

Though set up to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, the UNCFadministered scholarships are open to all ethnicities; the great majority of recipients are still African-American.

It provides scholarships to students attending its member colleges as well as to those going elsewhere.

“An Evening of Stars” began as the “Lou Rawls Parade of Stars” telethon to benefit the UNCF. At this year’s gala, Dr. Lomax joined with BET’s Debra Lee in a combined effort to bring awareness by shining a spotlight on the students and raise scholarship money at the same time. The lineup of performances started off with Erykah Badu, Shawn Robinson, followed by a duet with Patti LaBelle and Ledisi who belted out “A New Attitude,” one of LaBelle’s signature hits. In between each performance, a UNCF student would be showcased: some through

video and some in person, and then each celebrity urged the audience to donate through texting or via the internet.

The lineup continued with Estelle and Anthony Hamilton singing followed by former Lakers star, Kenny Smith who acted as a pitchman for UNCF, asking the audience to donate.

Then Patti LaBelle returned to the stage for a solo number for which she received a standing ovation. Ledisi followed also with a solo performance.

Cooper’s lawyer acknowledged in court that Stockett gave her a copy of the book in January 2009, about a month before it was published. The lawsuit was filed in February 2011.

Sanders, Cooper’s lawyer, said a note Stockett wrote to Cooper falsely implied the book had nothing to do with Cooper, so she didn’t read it until later.

Sanders argued that the statute of limitations should have begun later, when Cooper eventually read the book.

The judge was not persuaded.

“This used to be a Republican idea,” Obama said. “It’s like suddenly they got amnesia.”

The so-called individual mandate in Obama’s health care law was struck down by a federal appeals court last week, but Obama expressed confidence that the Supreme Court ultimately would uphold it if justices follow existing law and precedent.

One woman told Obama she was recovering from lung cancer and had slept in her truck for two days to ask him a question about Social Security, although the president missed the chance to sympathize with her about her health when he responded with a defense of Social Security.

The woman, Lois Dare, 53, expressed disappointment later that Obama didn’t acknowledge her situation.

“I need help,” she said. “I was hoping he would have said, ‘Let me take some information down and go back to the White House.’ ” Obama began his remarks at the town halls with what’s becoming a refrain: criticizing Congress, accusing lawmakers of putting politics ahead of the country and calling on voters to tell them to cut it out.

“You’ve got to send a message to Washington that it’s time for the games to stop,” Obama said.

Appearing in Cannon Falls, Minn., ahead of Obama’s town hall, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus rallied a few dozen tea party members and College Republicans.

“We won’t stand idly by while he uses our hard-earned tax dollars to spin his failure to put America back to work,” Priebus said.

Between his events in Cannon Falls, Minn., and Decorah, Iowa, Obama logged miles of heartland highway in his bus, making several unannounced stops. First, it was lunch at the Old Market Deli in Cannon Falls with five Minnesota military veterans who served after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

FAILURE OF THE CONTRACTOR TO COMPLETE THE WORK WITHIN THE CONTRACT TIME AND OTHER MILESTONES WILL RESULT IN ASSESSMENT OF LIQUIDATED DAMAGES IN THE AMOUNTS ESTABLISHED IN THE SPECIAL CONDITIONS. NIB-5 Contractor’s License. Each Bidder shall hold a current and valid Class ”B” California Contractor’s License to bid this Project.

NIB-6 NOT USED NIB-7 SBE/VSBE. This project is subject to the Port of Long Beach (POLB) Small Business Enterprises (SBE)/Very Small Business Enterprises (VSBE) Program. The combined SBE/VSBE participation goal for this project is twenty-five percent (25%), of which a minimum of five percent (5%) must be allocated to VSBEs. POLB expects all Bidders to achieve the combined SBE/VSBE participation goal. Award of the Contract will be conditioned on the Bidder submitting an SBE-2C Commitment Plan demonstrating the Bidder’s intent to meet the combined SBE/VSBE participation goal.

If the Bidder’s Commitment Plan does not demonstrate intent to meet the combined goal, the Bidder shall demonstrate that it made an adequate good faith effort to do so, as specified in the Instructions to Bidders (ITB 18). NIB-8 Prevailing Wage Rates and Employment of Apprentices. This Project is a public work as defined in Labor Code Section 1720. The Contractor receiving award of the Contract and Subcontractors of any tier shall pay not less than the prevailing wage rates to all workers employed in execution of the Contract. The Director of Industrial Relations of the State of California has determined the general prevailing rates of wages in the locality in which the Work is to be performed. The rate schedules are available on the internet at http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlsr/DPreWageDetermination.htm. Bidders are directed to Article 15 of the General Conditions for requirements concerning payment of prevailing wages, payroll records, hours of work and employment of apprentices.

NIB-9 NOT USED NIB-10 NOT USED. NIB-11 Bid Security, Signed Contract, Insurance and Bonds. Each Bid shall be accompanied by a satisfactory Bidder’s Bond or other acceptable Bid Security in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the Base Bid as a guarantee that the Bidder will, if Conditionally Awarded a Contract by the Board, within thirty (30) calendar days after the Contract is conditionally awarded to the Contractor by the City, execute and deliver such Contract to the Chief Harbor Engineer together with all required documents including insurance forms, a Payment Bond for one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, and a Performance Bond for one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price. All Bonds shall be on forms provided by the City.

NIB-12 Conditional Award of Contract and Reservation of Rights. The Board, acting through the Executive Director, reserves the right at any time before the execution of the Contract by the City, to reject any or all Bids, and to waive any informality or irregularity. The Conditional Award of the Contract, if any, will be to the responsible Bidder submitting the lowest responsive and responsible Bid. If the lowest responsive responsible Bidder fails to submit the required documents including insurance forms, bonds and signed Contract within thirty (30) calendar days after Conditional Award of Contract, the Board reserves the right to rescind the Conditional Award and Conditionally Award the Contract to the next lowest responsive and responsible Bidder.

NIB-13 Period of Bid Irrevocability. Bids shall remain open and valid and Bidder’s Bonds shall be guaranteed for ninety (90) calendar days after the Bid Deadline or until the Executive Director executes a Contract, whichever occurs first.

NIB-14 Substitution of Securities. Substitution of Securities for retainage is permitted in accordance with Section 22300 of the Public Contract Code.
