Race, Heat, Economic Light: Advancing Economic Justice BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST (NNPA) — Recently, President Obama signed legislation implementing financial reform and extending economic benefits. He also endorsed legislation that would make it easier for women to get equal pay in the workplace. It was a week when the economic justice agenda was advanced in many ways. And it was a week when race dominated the airwaves. From an economic perspective, the big news was that the President, flanked by some of the same unemployed Americans that Sharon Angle, the Tea Party Republican opposing Sen. Harry Reid in Nevada, has described as “lazy,” scolded the Senate and told them to get off their duffs and pass legislation providing benefits for the nearly 3 million people who have lost jobs and had their benefits cut off. President Obama rarely goes into stern/ scold mode, and many think he should do it more often. In this case, he showed unemployed people the support they needed during these hard times. The President scolded on July 19, and by that Wednesday the Senate had passed the $34 billion piece of legislation that will extend unemployment benefits and provide benefits retroactive to June 2 for those who have been cut off. Kudos to Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe who bypassed partisanship to provide needed votes to the important measure. On Thursday, the House of Representatives affirmed the Senate bill, and late that afternoon, President Obama signed the legislation, still excoriating “a partisan minority” for standing in the way of much-needed relief for unemployed families. On July 21, the President signed the financial reform legislation that will establish an independent consumer protection agency. Before the ink was dry, Republicans started excoriating professor Eliza-
beth Warren, the former Harvard professor who is also a bankruptcy expert and consumer advocate. Warren floated the idea for an agency to protect consumers from financial fraud in a 2007 article and is the logical choice to lead the new agency. Yet some Republicans feel she may be “too” activist for
Julianne Malveaux bankers’ comfort. Who ever said this legislation should be about banker “comfort”? The passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act is cause for celebration. Recently, Vice President Joe Biden, White House staffers Valerie Jarrett and Melody Barnes, EEOC head Jackie Berrien, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, and Attorney General Eric Holder called for the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act at a White House briefing. President Obama also affirmed his support for this legislation, which has been reintroduced by Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski as part of legislation that will provide recession relief to small businesses. It is important to use the word recession in context with paycheck fairness, since women’s earnings have been especially important in a recession where men have been losing jobs more rapidly than women. To illustrate the point, Lily Ledbetter spoke at a briefing about the way unequal pay had shaped her life and her fam-
ily life. Earning 40 percent less than men who did the same work, Ledbetter now gets a smaller pension, and, as she pointed out, had less to use to pay for tuition, health care and other necessities. The homespun elder spoke of eating “lots of beans” during lean times, beans she might not have had to eat with more equal pay. Unequal pay, she said, is not only a women’s issue, but also a family issue, and a national economic issue. Though the Paycheck Fairness Bill has yet to pass, the spirited advocacy of it is an important step toward economic justice. From my perspective, the administration hit a home run for economic justice. Instead of celebrating economic good news, though, race matters dominated headlines. Without minimizing the rush to judge S h e r r y Sherrod, the malicious distortion of her comments, her resignation, the apologies, and her reinstatement, it seems to me that economic progress is far more significant than this story. At the same time, it reminds me of my early days in talk radio, when a veteran told me that whenever you wanted to “light up the boards” or get lots of calls coming in, you should inject race, religion, war, or abortion into the conversation. The man advising me said he made no promises about the quality of the conversation. Too often, you get more heat than light, but it’s not a talk show host’s job to make public policy, it’s to keep the conversation moving. For better or worse, Sherry Sherrod is now a household word, and an illustration of our nation’s unfinished race business. During the same week she dominated headlines, we also made considerable progress in the economic arena, but you’d never know. I know race matters are far more exciting than economic progress, but in some ways economic progress is equally, if not more, significant.

If It Sounds Like Racism And Acts Like Racism, Then It Probably Is Racism
Danny J. Bakewell Sr.
BY DANNY J. BAKEWELL SR. CHAIRMAN OF NNPA This is America, but you wouldn’t think so in light of recent events wherein two high-profile, long-serving African American congresspersons have come under attack. They are being dragged through the mud in a rush to judgment regarding alleged ethics violations. Rep. Charles B. Rangel (DNY) and Rep. Maxine Waters (DCA) are the accused. Rangel has been accused by a House ethics subcommittee of violating ethics rules and will face trial within the next couple of months. He has been under investigation since 2008 due to allegedly using his House position for financial benefit. Rep. Waters is also under the microscope of the House ethics subcommittee for allegedly using her congressional authority in a meeting with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on behalf of OneUnited Bank, in which her husband owns $250,000 in stock. It is important that our elected officials, that those to whom we give our public trust, be ethically sound, but in this current spate of accusations, there is something fishy in the proverbial Denmark! As of 2010, there are presently 42 African American members in the 111th U.S. Congress — 41 in the House of Representatives (39 representatives and 2 non-voting dele-
gates) and one in the Senate. The fact is that African Americans represent only 10 percent of the Congress, and 19 percent (8) are under investigation! This raises the question as to whether or not Black lawmakers face more scrutiny over allegations of wrongdoing than their White counterparts. We conclude that if it sounds like racism and acts like racism, then it probably is racism! In America, we need to presume innocence until proven guilty, and we need not be led to judgment. Congressman Rangel and Congresswoman Waters are valuable members of the African American community who have fought valiantly for our community. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), therefore, urges you to stand behind them. We want them to know that we are there for them; that all 200-plus NNPA publishers throughout America stand solidly behind them, and urge them to continue on the course and stay strong. Black publishers are on the way with pen in hand! History has shown that Black people make no progress in America without a struggle for what is right and good for the Black community. Many people want to call this situation something other than what it is, but it is racism at the core. It is daunting but not surprising that this is the case, but Rangel and Waters are far too valuable to our community to give up without a fight.

Child Watch
Listening to Shirley Sherrod BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN NNPA COLUMNIST (NNPA) — By now much of the nation has followed the story of former U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) official Shirley Sherrod, who was forced to resign from her post earlier this month after being dishonestly accused of racism in a March speech, only to be vindicated as soon as someone took the time to get a copy of what she actually said and allow the truth to come to light. But for those people who know Shirley and her husband, civil rights leader Charles Sherrod, the fact that the smears on her character were outrageous and false was never in doubt. It also was not a surprise to learn that the real message of Shirley Sherrod’s speech was actually something quite different and critically important: not just her own ability to overcome racially motivated attitudes, but her insistence on our need to work together to address the real division in our country— the one between the haves and have-nots in our wealthy nation that has devastating effects on poor people of every color. Before she was appointed to the position as USDA Georgia State Director of Rural Development, Sherrod was a founder and key leader of the Southern Rural Black Women’s Initiative for Economic and Social Justice (SRBWI), which grew out of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Black Community Crusade for Children, the Federation of Community Controlled Child Care Centers of Alabama (FOCAL), and the Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education’s work in the South. She served as Georgia State Lead for SRBWI, where she helped promote the first human rights agenda in the United States aimed at eradicating historical race, class, cultural, religious, and gender barriers experienced by southern rural Black women. But as her colleagues at SRBWI point out, Sherrod has spent a lifetime fighting for economic and social justice for all
Marian Wright Edelman
people—something she pledged to do on the night her father was brutally murdered in 1965. In fact, the March speech at a local Georgia NAACP event from which her remarks were deliberately excerpted out of context was about how she came to make this her life’s mission. As she opened her speech that evening, she noted it was the forty-fifth anniversary of her father’s funeral, and said, “He was a leader in the com-
munity. He wasn’t the first to be killed by white men in the county. But I couldn't just let his death go without doing something in answer to what happened. I made the commitment on the night of my father's death, at the age of 17, that I would not leave the South, that I would stay in the South and devote my life to working for change. And I’ve been true to that commitment all of these 45 years.” It’s a
commitment she shares with her husband Charles, who was the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)’s first field secretary and a cofounder of the Albany Movement in Georgia during the civil rights era. He then earned a doctor of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary before returning to Georgia to spend many years working with community organizations and serving on
the Albany City Council. Later, in one of the sections of the speech that was deceptively cut, Sherrod made clear that her experience twenty-four years ago helping a poor White farmer only confirmed a larger truth about the need for all of us to overcome racial divisions in order to fight injustice: “Working with him made me see that it's really about those who have versus those who don’t … they could be black, and they could be white? they could be Hispanic. And it made me realize then that I needed to work to help poor people—those who don’t have access the way others have.” She continued, “I’ve come to realize that we have to work together. You know, it’s sad that we don’t have a room full of White and Blacks here tonight, because we have to overcome the divisions that we have … [O]ur communities are not going to thrive. Our children won’t have the communities that they need to be able to stay and live in and have a good life if we can’t figure this out, you all. White people, Black people, Hispanic people, we all have to do our part to make our communities a safe place, a healthy place, a good environment.” It’s that message, about the need for all of us to work together in order to address the common threat of poverty—at a time when the gap between rich and poor is at the highest recorded level ever—and the need to create the healthy, safe communities all children need to live and thrive that was wrongfully cut out of the original coverage of Shirley Sherrod’s speech and lost in the ensuing debate. But that’s the message that resounds through her life’s work and the one we all need to hear and heed. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children’s Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Expo Line Project Continues to Stir Up Concerns, Maintains Some Support BY KAYLEE DAVIS SENTINAL INTERN A commission’s approval of a street-level crossing for a light rail next to Dorsey High School has left some residents up in arms, while some officials are generally pleased. The California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) unanimous approval last week allows for an amended plan of the crossing to become reality, and will include the construction of a station on Farmdale Avenue that will have safety enhancements. Some community members are still concerned about the at-grade crossing, seeing it as unsafe for students in the area. “With the station comes additional safety enhancements, and that’s how we are addressing concerns,” said Gabriela Collins, a spokesperson with the Exposition Construction Authority, which is behind the Expo Line project. The Farmdale station is designed to provide increased mobility to Dorsey faculty, staff, students and other community members. The enhancements will include security cameras, bells and flashers, vehicle and pedestrian crossings with quad and pedestrian gates and more. Also, after coming to a full stop at the station, the train won’t go more than 15 miles per hour while crossing. “It’s safer for pedestrians and vehicles,” Collins said. Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks shared similar sentiments. “I am pleased the California Public Utilities Commission has given the green light for the Farmdale
station, removing the final hurdle in the approval process for Phase 1 of the Expo Line,” Parks said in an emailed statement. “With the added improvements to ensure pedestrian safety, residents can look forward to a new, state-of-the-art light rail train that is both quick and efficient for passengers, as well as safe for pedestrians.” The community group who began the Fix Expo Campaign remains dissatisfied with the station’s construction, doubtful of the safety enhancements. “We have never been opposed to the rail line; we’ve been opposed to the way it’s being built,” explained Damien Goodmon, executive director of the United Community Asso-
ciations Inc., which seeks to bring together the community and focuses on issues such as traffic, safety and environmental inequalities. Fix Expo has demanded that the same safety measures be provided in South L.A. as is provided in Culver City. Some members believe the rail line in Culver City is built to a “certain standard” — when the line enters the Culver City, it is above-grade. This new light rail line, which will travel along Exposition Boulevard, features stops in downtown Los Angeles and Culver City. It will eventually reach Santa Monica. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in summer 2011. The construction of the second phase hasn’t begun yet, but it could
start next year and be completed in 2015, said Samantha Bricker, chief operating officer of the Expo Authority. A main concern for some involves the crossings near schools and numerous youth. Steve Bagby, president of the Dorsey High School Alumni Association and a member of the United Community Association, said he knows the area surrounding the Farmdale station well, which is swarming with what he says are many irrational teenagers. He worries the students will not make the safest decisions when crossing near the rail line, and that the results may be “catastrophic.” Bagby has attended a few Dorsey
High School meetings where many had been concerned about dangers they believed the station would pose to the area. Lester Hollins, a retired Metro light rail operator, has attested to some of the dangers of street-level crossings. While operating a train on the Blue Line, Hollins was involved in an accident with an ambulance. “The professionals can’t co-exist with the trains. So, how can we expect the kids to?” Hollins said. He remembers accidents during his train-operating days, including one involving a death, lamenting, “at night, I toss and turn.” Hollins does not want the same fate for the children and residents near Dorsey High School, where his son plays football. Hollins added, “We want a safe train system. That’s all we want.” The CPUC conducted a study and determined that, at the Farmdale station and the surrounding area, underground and aerial crossings are not feasible, Collins said. She stressed that the appropriate solution is the station with safety features. Goodmon feels “the community has been abandoned,” and he wants justice. City Councilman Herb Wesson responded to the decision in a prepared statement: “In terms of improving safety and moving the project forward, the Commission’s decision is significant. As a community, we want to reap the benefits. But we also want to avoid problems. So, monitoring the project in all respects will continue to be a priority.”
Rangel, Waters Fight Ethics Charges as Black Support Mounts WASHINGTON (NNPA) — As U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (DN.Y.) prepares to fight 13 ethics charges, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, another leading member of the Congressional Black Caucus, has also come under scrutiny. Reportedly, Waters (D-Calif.) has decided to go to trial rather than be sanctioned for allegedly improperly influencing the receipt of $12 million in bailout funds by the Massachusetts-based OneUnited Bank, where her husband owns stock. Formal charges against Waters by the House ethics committee were announced Aug. 2. Charges against Rangel involve reporting of income on his financial disclosure forms as well as alleged fund-raising violations. The investigations have been blasted by pundits as racially disparate. Black leaders, including political scientist Ron Walters, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif) — chair-
woman of the Congressional Black Caucus — and Danny Bakewell, chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, have warned against rushing to judgment.
Rep. Maxine Waters
“Of course, we know that one of the most important principles of America’s democracy is due process, that a person is innocent of any charges until all the facts are in and that person is either proven guilty or acquitted of the charges,” Bakewell said in an op-ed posted this week by the NNPA News Service. “This due process must be respected in the ethics charges against Mr. Rangel. He has admitted some mistakes, but we need not rush to judgment as was in the flagrant case involving Shirley Sherrod,” Bakewell wrote. Rangel was an NNPA “Legacy of Excellence” Award recipient at the organization’s annual convention, held in New York in June. Lee said in a state-
ment, “All Americans are entitled to a fair and due process, and that right extends to Congressman Rangel as well. Any rush to judgment to shortcircuit the o n g o i n g review of Congressman Rangel by the Committee on Rep. Charlie Rangel Standards of Official “Well, you get it; if you have Conduct will do a disservice to the the money of Sen. Jane Harmon or well established processes of the the power of John Murtha, very litHouse of Representatives.” tle will happen to you,” he said. Walters said the black members “I’m not defending black members are suspiciously going through the of Congress who violate ethics full process while white lawmakers rules, but as long as whites are are getting off the hook. exonerated, so should blacks.”

Activists Seek Help to Find Pregnant Leimert Park Woman’s Killer (CNS) — Activists walked the community walk in Leimert Park this week to plea for information leading to the arrest of the person who fatally shot a pregnant woman as she sat in a vehicle. Christina Williams, 37, was shot about 11 p.m. on July 29 near 42nd Street and Fourth Avenue. Her baby also died. Anyone who has information about the case can call the Los Angeles Police Department at (877) 527-3247.
Congress Passes Fair Sentencing Act WASHINGTON (NNPA) — The House of Representatives passed the Fair Sentencing Act (S.1789) on July 28 to restore fairness to federal cocaine sentencing. The legislation, which matches a measure passed in March by the Senate, is aimed at reducing the current sentencing disparity of those convicted of possession of crack cocaine versus powder cocaine and eliminating mandatory minimum sentencing. In a released statement, the NAACP expressed support for the legislation, calling the current sentencing practices “racially discriminating.” It is legislation that many have thought to be long overdue.
DASH Cuts Some Bus Routes (CNS) — Changes in service of DASH buses affected commuters
beginning Aug. 2 after prices went up 10 cents and six bus routes were eliminated, according to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. Effective Aug. 1, LA DOT eliminated six of its routes to curtail a budget shortfall. Some of the eliminated routes include the Central City East, Downtown Route C, Downtown Route DD and Hyde Park Shuttle routes. Commuter Express buses following the 413, 430 and 575 routes were also cut. Sunday service has also been eliminated for the Crenshaw, Highland Park/Eagle Rock, Lincoln Heights/Chinatown and Midtown routes while several other routes now have reduced hours of service and frequency. Commuters inconvenienced by the changes are asked to call (213, 310, 323, or 818) 808-2273.
County’s Coroner Office Reports Homicide (CNS) — Just one homicide was recorded in Los Angeles County on July 31, a coroner’s spokesman said recently. The most recent homicide countywide was a man who died of a gunshot wound at a hospital July 31 about midnight, Jerry McKibben of the coroner’s office said. New Developments in the Search for Mitrice Richardson BY JASMYNE A. CANNICK CONTRIBUTING WRITER Last week new developments in the search for Mitrice Richardson led authorities to Las Vegas. Mitrice Richardson, 25, disappeared after allegedly being released from the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station almost a year ago, and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. However, new hope surfaced after Greg Amerson, a friend from Richardson’s teenage years, said he saw her in a bar at the Rio on Father’s Day weekend in June, prompting a search by L.A. County sheriff’s investigators. “I did see her,” says one witness who wanted to remain nameless. “I was staying at the Motel 6 on Thursday and I saw her on crutches, wearing a green dress. I saw Channel 13 news and was concerned about the father, so I reported the situation. It was definitely her.” A joint press conference to ask for the public’s help in Las Vegas was held last Thursday in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Enterprise Area Command Center. Michael Richardson, the father of Mitrice, was never notified about the Las Vegas press conference by authorities. He only found out about the press conference through Los Angeles Times reporter Carla Hall, who inquired if he was planning on going. Michael then took the rest of last week off from work after purchasing a one-way ticket on Southwest Airlines for $161 to Las Vegas leaving last Thursday morning at 6:15 a.m. He paid for the ticket himself with money collected from supporters online and at a recent fundraiser in Leimert Park. He booked a room in downtown Las Vegas near the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department where he was told the press conference would be. After arriving in Las Vegas without incident he caught a taxicab to his hotel only to be notified by sources that the press conference for 11 a.m. was now going to be 22 miles away from where he was staying. After confirming this was

the case — by way of a threeway call with a very hostile Las Vegas police officer in charge of the event who actually asked Michael if he’d gotten permission to come to Las Vegas and participate in the press conference for his own missing daughter — Michael paid a $45 taxicab fare one way to get there. At the press conference, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Chuck Knolls told Mr. Richardson that he could not participate in the press conference, but that if he wanted to do so in the 108-degree weather, he could hold his own press conference outside. Mr. Richardson had previously reported seeing her in January in Las Vegas’ downtown area near 7th and Fremont while there with his motorcycle club. At the time, detectives failed to follow up on the tip. Since last week’s press conference, Las Vegas residents have phoned invarious sightings of Mitrice. “If anybody knows anything please contact us,” says Johnny Cole, of Los Angeles, a friend of
Mr. Richardson’s who came to Las Vegas to help look for Mitrice. “How could you sleep at night knowing your daughter’s out there, and could be dead or alive?” Currently authorities are trying to determine whether it was Mitrice at the Motel 6 on Tropicana across from the MGM Grand. Mr. Richardson says it does provide hope that they’re getting closer to finding her. And he says this latest tip goes along with his theory — that someone could have her — or be hiding her. “We really feel strongly that whoever possibly has her, takes her out of the limelight,” he says. “No one sees her for a couple of days. We might be on to something here.” He plans to travel back and forth from L.A. to Las Vegas to continue the search. He’s working with a group of local volunteers who will keep the effort going while he’s back home. Freedoms Are Curbed As Rwandan Election Nears SPECIAL TO NNPA FROM THE GIN (GIN) – With national elections less than a month away, Rwandan President Paul Kagame appears to have given the green light to anti-press freedom forces. Last month, a journalist was shot dead outside of his home, a newspaper editor arrested and two newspapers suspended on charges of genocide denial and reviving ethnic hatred. President Kagame, 52, who has ruled since his Rwandan Patriotic Front ended the 1994 genocide by extremists from the Hutu majority against his Tutsi minority, insists the country is free to choose. But with the murder of an opposition leader, Andre Kagwa Rwisereka of the unregistered Democratic Green
Party, tensions are building ahead of the Aug. 9 poll. Rwisereka was found nearly decapitated on July 14. A campaign has been launched by Reporters Borders urging the European Union and other international donors to suspend financial aid to Rwanda for its polls while reporters remain in jail. Among those are Agnès Uwimana Nkusi, editor of the privately owned fortnightly Umurabyo, for civil disobedience, insulting the president, spreading false rumors and denying the Tutsi genocide. Nkusi is expected to be brought to trial soon.
Africa Losing Billions in Mineral Wealth SPECIAL TO NNPA FROM THE GIN (GIN) – New wealth from gold, copper and other minerals brought little benefit to the Congo – and should be a warning to Afghanistan where discoveries valued at over $1 billion have just been found, writes economics professor Paul Collier in a recent New York Times editorial.
Security in Afghanistan could easily break down as it did not only in Congo but also in Nigeria (rich in oil) and Sierra Leone (diamonds). “In eastern Congo, $1 billion in gold is being extracted and exported annually yet because government lacks control over the territory, revenues that reached the national Treasury last year were a mere $37,000, wrote Collier. In Zambia, copper exports of about $3 billion a year generate a mere $100 million in tax revenue for Zambians, he said. Most important, he said, is that citizens who live near the mineral deposits benefit with jobs and spending on public works. “Nigeria is a prime example of what happens when the local population pays the price for extraction without reaping the rewards, he said Finally, he said, “there is no substitute for local citizens who are involved in decision-making, who can learn from other countries how to make the most of their own natural wealth. Collier is the author of “The Plundered Planet: Why We Must – and How We Can – Manage Nature for Global Prosperity.anage Nature for Global Prosperity.

Sports Beat BY BRAD PYE JR. Notes, quotes and things picked up on the run from coast-to-coast and all the stops in between and beyond. Those two Oregon universities — the University of Oregon and Oregon State — should dominate the Pac-10 football conference in 2010. Oregon is picked by the odds makers to win the Pac-10 title again, and Jacquizz and James Rodgers should dominate the headlines from coast-to-coast for that other Oregon team — the Oregon State Beavers. The Rodgers brothers are probably making more preseason headlines than any other players in the conference, if not the nation. Jacquizz Rodgers is a leading Heisman Trophy candidate. He has a career rushing mark of 2,693 yards and more than 30 touchdowns. James Rodgers is a Biletnikoff Award candidate (the award is given to the nation’s best receiver in college football). He has 5,077 career all-purpose yards. And he had 91 receptions in 2009. Yes, the Rodgers brothers are the most effective brothers duo in college football, in my opinion. The University of California at Los Angeles is again slated to be among the “also-rans. But some of the Bruins’ players say this isn’t so.

Over in Eugene, Ore., the Ducks are the defending Pac-10 champions and are favored to repeat and return to the Rose Bowl for the second year in a row. By the way, there will be a total of 13 black head college football coaches in 2010. Included in this group is exNebraska quarterback Turner Gill, who moves to Kansas from the University of Buffalo. The purpose of this notice is to inform you that Park Water Company (Park), your water provider, will soon put into operation groundwater well fluoridation facilities. As a consumer you will be receiving water that is optimally fluoridated for your dental health. To meet the demands of its customers, Park utilizes a mixture of purchased water and pumped groundwater supplies. Park's purchased water supplies are already fluoridated by their supplier, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. In 2009, through funding from First 5 LA Commission, Park installed fluoridation facilities at their groundwater wells. These installations will allow Park to provide its customers with optimally fluoridated water supply at levels that range from 0.7 to 0.8 parts per million. It should be noted that the naturally occurring fluoride levels in Park's wells range from 0.1 to 0.4 parts per million. According to the Dental Health Foundation, California's children experience TWICE the amount of tooth decay as their counterparts nationwide. One way to address this issue is through fluoridation of the public water supply systems. Fluoride is nature's cavity fighter. Drinking optimally fluoridated water has reduced tooth decay by about 60% in the United States since World War II. Fluoride helps fight cavities by strengthening tooth enamel so teeth become more resistant to decay, particularly in children prenatal stage through age five. Also, according to the American Dental Association, "Of the thousands of credible scientific studies on fluoridation, none has shown health problems associated with the consumption of optimally fluoridated water." After careful consideration of all reputable sources, Park believes that optimally fluoridating their water supply will provide their consumers with a valuable health benefit at minimal cost.

Dispatchers couldn’t verify location of 911 call BY ADRIAN SAINZ ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Police dispatchers didn’t alert patrol officers or commanders to a 911 call from the phone of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright because they couldn’t confirm that it came from inside their suburban Memphis jurisdiction, documents show. Wright’s body was found in woods on July 28 after he had been missing for 10 days. He was shot to death, and police are looking for the killer or killers of the beloved Memphis sports hero. Germantown dispatcher Claudia Kenley Woods said the police department’s mapping system couldn’t plot the precise location of the call placed in the early morning hours of July 19, but the latitude and longitude indicated it came from outside their town. Woods and her supervisor, Lt. Donald Taylor, said they couldn’t tell the phone belonged to Wright. When investigators finally learned of the call July 27, they used information from it to launch the search that found Wright’s body. Friends and family filed a missing person report on July 22 and have complained that police did not show enough urgency in looking for Wright. Top police officials in the suburb of Germantown are investigating how the 911 call was handled and on Monday released some records, which they said they edited to protect the homicide investigation. “I answered the phone and heard what appeared to be (REDACTED), Woods told a police inspector and captain who interviewed her about the call. “There was no voice. No other noise. Taylor said he tried to use his iPhone to plot the coordinates but it did not work. He said he did not report the call to any outside law enforcement agency because “the information I had was an unknown call from an unknown location. Taylor said dispatchers have transferred calls to Memphis before, but only when the caller has given them a location. Memphis police are leading the investigation but won’t discuss if they have any suspects or motive. They have the 911 recording, which is not being made available. Taylor said he didn’t search the Internet for the coordinates because
only one console has Internet access in the office, and that access was limited. Taylor said he has asked that more Internet access be made available to dispatchers. Dispatchers get 50 to 100 hang-
Lorenzen Wright up 911 calls a month from outside Germantown during his shift alone, some from as far as Louisiana, Taylor said. “Obviously there’s some newer technology out there that will make it a much better job than we can, but we’re somewhat limited, you know, because of the cost, said police Inspector Danny Payne, who was interviewing Taylor. Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, told The Associated Press that Germantown’s handling of the 911 call was “ridiculous and they should offer her an apology. “Even if they couldn’t have saved him, they could have gotten to the murderers quicker, Marion said. The 6-foot-11 Wright played 13 seasons in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and most recently the Cleveland Cavaliers. Wright left the University of Memphis early for the NBA, and the Clippers made him a lottery pick with the No. 7 selection overall. He averaged 8 points and 6.4 rebounds in 778 career games. Wright leaves behind six children, his mother Deborah Marion, and father Herb Wright, who coached his son from a wheelchair after he was shot in the spine. Lorenzen Wright’s 11-month-old daughter, Sierra, died in March 2003 of sudden infant death syndrome. A memorial service took place Aug. 4 at the FedEx Forum, where the Grizzlies play their home games.

Haitian Official: Wyclef Jean Said to Agree to Presidential Run BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The hip-hop performer Wyclef Jean is about to announce his candidacy for president of Haiti, the former leader of the country’s Chamber of Deputies said Aug. 3. The former deputy, Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques, said that Jean had agreed to run as part of Jean-Jacques’s
coalition in the election, scheduled for Nov. 28. A spokeswoman for Jean, Cindy Tanenbaum, declined to comment, saying only that he planned to make an announcement on Aug. 5 in Haiti. Time magazine reported on its Web site on the night of Aug. 3 that Jean had confirmed that he would run for president.
Terrence Howard to join ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ BY LYNN ELBER ASSOCIATED PRESS BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – “Law & Order: Los Angeles” is getting another big-name prosecutor.
Terrence Howard Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard is joining the cast of the new NBC drama and will rotate with co-star Alfred Molina as deputy district attorney, series creator Dick Wolf told the Television Critics Association recently. “I feel like manager of the 1961 Yankees. I have my Mantle and Maris,” Wolf said, referring to famed sluggers Mickey Mantle and Roger
Maris. Howard, an Oscar nominee for “Hustle & Flow,” also has appeared in the films “Iron Man,” “Crash” and “Ray.” Also joining the cast is Corey Stoll, who will play a police detective. Stoll appears in the new Angelina Jolie film “Salt” and guest-starred in the original “Law & Order.” His character is partner to Skeet Ulrich’s detective. Wolf was circumspect about the demise of the original “Law & Order” series, which was canceled by NBC after a 20-year run that tied the record set by “Gunsmoke” but lost the chance to break it. “That’s business. That’s life. Everything on TV is born under a death sentence. They just don’t tell you the execution date,” Wolf said, adding that the show had a great run. Asked if money had been the deal breaker in renewal talks with NBC, Wolf retorted, “You can’t believe we’re going to discuss negotiations.” “There’s so many factors that entered into the network’s decision. ... In the 25 years I’ve been continuously on the air at NBC, we’ve never failed to make a deal when there was a deal to be made,” he said.

the evil & ugliness of RACISM
Violence, Disadvantage and Struggle By Maulana Karenga, Ph.D.
Of all the evil and violent disorders that can infect a people and that have affected the history and lives of the peoples of the world, none has been more destructive than racism. Indeed, the horrid history of racism in this country began with its founding: the holocaust of genocide and dispossession against Native Americans, the Holocaust of enslavement against Africans, violent dispossession and subjugation of Mexicans, and the brutal labor exploitation and oppression of Asians. To understand and appreciate the violent and destructive character of racism, we must distinguish it from racial prejudice with which it is commonly confused. Racial prejudice is hatred and hostility toward a people based on biological differences which are seen as signs of defectiveness. Racism, on the other hand, is the turning of that hatred and hostility into public policy and socially sanctioned practice. Not liking someone because they appear physically different is racial prejudice and certainly irrational. But using those differences to oppress, exploit, abuse and kill, and to justify this violence and establish it as a legal and social norm, is racism which is seriously detrimental and often deadly to those different others. Thus, anyone can hate or be hostile against others who appear physically different, but racism is rooted in the social system itself, enshrined in law and public

policy and sanctioned by society – openly and covertly, actively and passively. Thus, racism is a system of denial, deformation and destruction of a people’s history, humanity and human rights, based exclusively or primarily on the false concept of race. To say “race” is a false concept is not to deny our peoplehood or the peoplehood of other peoples. We are an African people. But race is not about peoplehood. Race is a socio-biological concept, constructed by Europe to assign human worth and social status using Whites as the exemplary model. In other words, the closer you are to Whites, the higher your human worth and social status. Likewise, the more different you are from Whites, the lower your human worth and the lower your social status. This helps explain the lower human worth and social status which Black people have been assigned in this society. Racism expresses itself in three basic ways: (1) imposition, (2) ideology, and (3) institutional arrangements. Racism begins as imposition, an act of massive violence, and it continues in various forms of violence. This becomes

its de ning feature, distinguishing it from mere prejudice. The violence is acts of dominance which involve various kinds of destruction from invasion, conquest and occupation to enslavement and dispossession, ethnic cleansing, genocide and holocaust. This is followed by acts of continued violence to maintain White control and dominance including, for African Americans, in addition to extended enslavement, massacres, lynchings, various forms of Klan and other vigilante violence, police violence of various kinds, and other forms of systemic violence, including deprivation of the necessities of life. It is personi ed in the brutal lynching of Emmett Till and countless others; the assassination of Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King Jr.; the police killings of Oscar Grant, Margaret Mitchell, Devin Brown and numerous others, their vicious beatings of Rodney King and sodomizing with a plunger and brutalizing Abner Louima; and the vigilante dragging to death of James Byrd. It is expressed in the sacking and burning of Rosewood and Black districts of Tulsa and Memphis and the taking of hundreds of lives in the process. And it is expressed in the savage and deadening impact of psychic violence, breaking the spirit and emptying brains, cultivating selfhatred and the compulsion to self-mutilate and to make oneself acceptable to one’s oppressor. Racism also involves an ideology of justi cation for its violence and domination. Blacks and peoples of color are de ned and described in such a way that they are stripped of their humanity and human rights; de ned as inferior and unworthy of a life of dignity and decency, indeed cursed by God as sons and daughters of Ham, forever destined to be hewers of wood and drawers of water for others. Moreover, crime is racialized as Black and then Black people are

criminalized as a race, justifying their different treatment by legislatures, courts, presidents, police and private citizens. But racism could not last without institutional arrangements to preserve and promote the imposition and the ideology of racism. The schools and universities, the courts, legislatures, police departments, intelligence services and corporations are structured for White dominance and Black disadvantage. Whether it is seeking employment, a loan for a house, a license for business, a grant for community action or entrance in critical social space of wealth and power, African Americans are at a structured disadvantage. This institutional disadvantaging and disabling is demonstrated in the Black Codes, the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott v. Sanford and Plessy v. Ferguson decisions; suppression and political trials and imprisonment of activists of the ’60s and other periods; the medical experiments on Tuskegee men and others; the harsher penalties and sentencing; higher interest rates; employer preferences for other-than-Black workers; redlining; restrictive covenants; repeated and selective prosecution of Black politicians; gerrymandering and the elimination of Black districts; voter suppression; differential wages and wealth; and discrimination and denials in employment, housing, health care, and virtually every other area of life. Certainly, the resistance to President Barack Obama in Congress and in the streets by the Tea Party has a racial, even racist, aspect to it, in spite of denials, conveniently camou aged behind claims of “concern for the country.” For their desire, they say, is “to take back the country,” as if President Obama’s very election disrupted the White scheme of things and reversed the normal and natural order of White supremacy. Then, too, there is the natural and human-made disaster of Hurricane Katrina, the criminal neglect, the fatally slow response, the farmed-out reconstruction, and the planned racial transformation of New Orleans. Being both Black and poor put them low on the race and class list of established-order consideration and assistance. “Where do go from here?” we always ask. And the answer is unavoidably the same: the struggle must continue and intensify. This means recognizing we are our own liberators; that the struggle for a just and good society requires dedication, discipline and sacri ce. Indeed, we must patiently, constantly and courageously pursue the education, mobilization and organization of our people, engage in confrontation with injustice on every level and seek simultaneously real and radical transformation of ourselves and society. And in all of this, we must realize that this struggle is a long, dif cult and demanding one, and therefore, as Amilcar Cabral taught, we must, “mask no dif culties, tell no lies and claim no easy victories.”

URBAN DRIVER Buick La Crosse CX Sedan Prominent advertisement has accompanied the 2010 LaCrosse CX Sedan entry into the marketplace and for under $30,000 (there is optional equipment available) it does not disappoint. With its strong, bold styling, the LaCrosse has established its own signature look in the GM line-up and should do well among its competitors including Acura TL, Toyota Avalon, Lincoln MK2, and Lexus ES350. Exterior: Built at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, the La Crosse gets stares from other drivers who gaze upon its impressive sculptured stance, accentuated by a rear spoiler and flared rear deck, that adds to its exterior mystique. The wheels with 17-inch machined aluminum covers complement the car and the body side moldings accentuate its overall attractiveness. Power heated outside mirrors are standard equipment. High intensity discharge headlamps are available. Interior: The interior is well crafted with premium cloth seats (great for the hot weather of Southern California). It’s got lots of standard bells and whistles for the price including a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, power seat adjusts (eightway for the driver and two-way for the front
passenger), air conditioning with an air filtration system, a driver information center with personalization and compass, lighted visors mirrors, power door locks, two auxiliary power outlets and custom interior ambient lighting. The seven-speaker audio system comes with AM/FM/XM stereo, CD/MP3 player and XM Satellite Radio (service subscription is sold separately by Sirius/XM after ninety days). Optional equipment includes navigation, rear seat DVD entertainment, leather seats, rear power sunshade, Power Driver Lumbar, Bluetooth for phone and autodial, dual zone air conditioning, universal home remote and premium audio system. Performance: The power plant provides an EPA estimate of 19-mpg/city and 30mpg/highway. The LaCrosse is powered by a 2.4 liter, 4cyl with a 6-speed automatic transmission (optional power plant packages of 3.0 and 3.6L V6 w/Direct Injection are available). The vehicle handles well with fourwheel independent suspension with Macpherson front suspension, and power rack & pinion steering. It’s effective on the often congested freeways or the streets of downtown Los Angeles during rush hour. Safety & Security: The 2009 and 2010 Top Safety Pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway

Shabaaz Fish and Grill Muriel Jones seafood restaurant is a healthy and scrumptious way to enjoy the taste of the sea. BY BRIAN W. CARTER SENTINEL STAFF WRITER Muriel Jones, founder and CEO of Shabaaz Fish and Grill (SFG) in Los Angeles, promises healthy and delicious meals from her seafood restaurant. SFG offers a variety of seafood meals prepared in almost every way from fried to grilled. More than just a restaurant, SFG is also deeply rooted in helping the community and is a veteran Taste of Soul vendor. The Shabaaz restaurants were a product of the Nation of Islam, under the honorable Elijah Muhammad, who started the restaurant to help established economic independence within the Black community. “One of the ways he [Elijah Muhammad] thought he could achieve that would be for AfricanAmericans to own their own business,” said Jones. “One of the focuses was on eating…in a way that he had deemed proper or healthy.” The Shabaaz restaurants were established throughout the East Coast in Detroit, Chicago, New York before eventually making their way to the West Coast. SFG was established in 1985 in the city of Los Angeles where it’s been serving seafood dishes ever since. “Fish actually is healthier for you,” said Jones, as she serves a variety of it at SFG. “We do all kinds of grilled fish…grilled salmon, grilled halibut, grilled whiting, grilled snapper and we also do deep fried fish,” said Jones. Her most popular and requested is catfish, which wasn’t initially on the original menu. “One thing people always come for, when we do outdoor catering …

Bath Sinks and Faucets 101: Replacing Faucets Only If you want a luxury bathroom design but don’t want to do a compete remodel, there are ways to create the perfect modern bathroom or use traditional bathroom design ideas to upgrade one piece at a time. Sometimes you can change the look of a bath sink simply by replacing the faucets, but keeping the sink itself. Sinks and faucets should be matched carefully since they come in a variety of hole drillings and basins. There’s no such thing as a universal fit. There are four basic types of faucets and their respective drillings: Wall-mounted — with a long spout to reach from the wall to the basin plus one or two handles Single lever — has a spout and a single handle to mix hot and cold Widespread — with a spout and two handles, all mounted as individual pieces Center set — a spout and two handles mounted in a center plate Use the configuration of your original faucet as a guide to buying a replacement; bring the original with you when shopping for the replacement to compare if you aren't sure. When removing the old faucet, be sure to turn off the water and remove the water supply connection from the faucet before dismantling it.

Bath Sink Options If you are planning to replace or improve your bathroom plumbing, you have a wide range of options when it comes to bath sinks. A wall-mounted sink is an excellent alternative for modern bathrooms, but if you are after a more traditional look, try a pedestal sink. Regardless of the style and mounting, make sure you have enough elbowroom for comfortable sink use. Install your new sink at least a foot away from the closest wall or the toilet to avoid banging your
elbows when washing or brushing. Your bathroom sink construction options include porcelain, marble, and vitreous china. When using china or porcelain, beware of dropping items onto these surfaces, as they tend to chip. Metal and fiberglass surfaces are also easily chipped or scratched in the right circumstances. Busy bathroom sinks used by children and teenagers are often better off with durable surfaces, such as enameled iron or steel. Source: www.mrrooter.com.

Person of the Week:
Bishop Charles E. Blake P B ,C G C
RESIDING ISHOP HURCH OF OD IN HRIST PASTOR, WEST ANGELES CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST FOUNDER, WEST ANGELES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION FOUNDER AND CEO, SAVE AFRICA’S CHILDREN
Dreaming Big! BY WILFRED GRAVES, JR., PH.D. SPECIAL TO THE WATTS TIMES One attribute of truly great leaders is their capacity to dream big. Big Dreamers have the uncanny ability to look beyond present limitations into the bright possibilities of the future. Bishop Charles E. Blake is a man who dreams big and who inspires countless others around the world to do the same. According to Bishop Blake, the big problems faced by our city, state, nation, and world require big dreams. There are no limits to what an individual can accomplish through God’s help, his guidance, and his power. In his first book entitled: Free to Dream, the bishop masterfully teaches his readers how to test the limits of their own imaginations and discover their God-given destinies. A second book entitled: Encountering God communicates to readers how to experience a more fulfilling personal relationship with the Creator. It is quite apparent that Charles Blake was destined to reach people of every age, race, gender, and socio-economic status. He is recognized as one of the great gospel preachers of our time with a message that ministers to the whole person. He not only serves as Presiding Bishop of the nation’s largest Pentecostal denomination, the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), but also as pastor of one of the largest churches in the United States. West Angeles COGIC has grown in membership from 50 in 1969 to more than 24,000 members today. The church
provides scores of programs for the spiritual growth and development of its members and the psychological, social, and economic enhancement of the larger community. West Angeles Community Development
Bishop Charles E. Blake Corporation (CDC), which Bishop Blake founded in 1994, seeks to promote social change through the three-fold purpose of economic empowerment, social justice, and community transformation. Save Africa’s Children, an organization of which Blake is founder and CEO, supports more than 200,000 children on the continent of Africa who have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Bishop Blake certainly
does dream big! His vision is one of global proportions. Bishop Blake is a proven leader on the local, national, and international stage. He has served on many boards, coalitions, committees, councils, and executive teams and his awards and accolades are too numerous to mention. Blake’s influence is felt both in inner-city Los Angeles and on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. and in many other places around the world. He is a source of wisdom and council to religious and political leaders, including three presidents. Recently, President Barack Obama named him as a member of the President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Without a doubt, Bishop Blake is a successful man with many great accomplishments. Yet, those who know him best would say that he is equally a man of great character and disposition. Yes, he is a great leader, but he also is a great person. He is caring, attentive, and approachable. He truly loves people and he leads a life of profound humility and personal integrity. Although Bishop Blake is a big dreamer, his dreams have never been for personal glory. Instead, they have been for the glory of God and the betterment of the world in which we live. The bishop has the heart of a servant and exemplifies the type of leadership of which the New Testament writers would be proud. Bishop Blake is married to Lady Mae Lawrence Blake. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
WORD: Don’t Give Up! BY LADY MYESHA CHANEY ANTIOCH CHURCH OF LONG BEACH The Bible in Luke 5 records, one day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, He saw at the water’s edge two boats left there by the fishermen who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Have you ever felt like giving up? The fishermen in the Luke 5 had experienced working hard, not seeing results, and of course, giving up. They had the motivation to work as they always had, but decided since the catch wasn’t great, they’d call it a day. They parked their boats and washed their nets. They gave up. When Jesus came on the scene, He challenged them. He asked Simon to put out into deep water. He encouraged him to get out of his comfort zone. If you have ever been in deep water, you know it is not comfortable. I reflect on deep sea snorkeling with my husband in Aruba. Once the boat reached its destination, it was time to jump off the boat into cold, 65 feet deep waters. I froze. I was afraid of the possibilities, of the unseen things lurking underneath, and the temperature of the water. I didn’t want to lose control. My husband took a big leap into the sea and I followed. It was scary, but I did it. In the same way, the Lord calls us to launch out into the deep in our lives, to journey to
Lady Myesha Chaney the place where we can only trust and depend on Him. He leads us to go further than we thought we could, to hold on a little longer, and to trust Him a little more. When we have no more strength and give up on our purpose and passion, He is there to encourage us to keep going. He allows us to hold on to His promise. He told Simon, “Let down the nets for catch.” He promises, “If you obey Me, you will have a catch.” Because He knows more about us than we know about ourselves, His plan is always better. After hearing Jesus’ words, Simon responds by reminding Jesus of all their hard work as if He didn’t already know. Will you trust Him when you have done all you can do? Simon was able to do what the Lord asked, despite what he felt, what he thought, what he had already done, and he received the promise. The Bible says, “When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” Dont give up. Launch out into the deep. Trust Him and wait for the catch, it’s coming!
Thousands Show Up To Say Goodbye To Music Legend Walter Hawkins
Bishop Walter Hawkins Celebration of Life (L-R) BeBe Winans, Marvin Winans & Mary Mary.
BY BILL CARPENTER SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL (Oakland, CA) — Scores of people who never met Walter Hawkins showed up from every corner of the globe this week and squeezed into the Paramount Theater alongside thousands of Oakland natives to bid farewell to the pioneering gospel legend known for creating classic songs such as “Goin’ Up Yonder,” “Changed,” and “Be Grateful.” Bishop Walter Hawkins, who cut a string of best-selling “Love Alive” LPs in the 1970s through the
1990s, died July 11th at the Ripon, CA home he shared with his brother Edwin and three sisters, after an almost two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Doctors initially gave him six months to live. When Hawkins’ funeral arrangements were made public, hundreds camped out in front of the Paramount Theater overnight to get the free tickets the Hawkins family made available to the public the next day. Yolanda Adams and a who’s who of the gospel world showed up for an all-star concert tribute to Hawkins. The event was televised nationally on the GMC channel and featured
performances by Hawkins’ former wife, Tramaine Hawkins, Donnie McClurkin, Ledisi, Mary Mary, and Bebe Winans, among others.
The following morning, Bishop Kenneth Moales officiated the eulogy where he proclaimed Hawkins’ only son, Jamie Hawkins, the successor to
the Love Center Church his father founded in 1972. In attendance at the ceremony, which drew over 4,000 See HAWKINS, page 18

Thank You! As the “Bakewell Family” embarks upon this new journey, I would like to first thank Melanie Polk for her enduring commitment to our community in advancing the L.A. Watts Times and furthering the legacy of her mother, father and their entire family. Her commitment, tenacity and foresight have given all of us a better understanding of what’s happening in our community. Throughout the pages of the “New” L.A. Watts Times Weekender, you can count on us bringing you new insight and provocative stories on gripping issues that confront our community. We will strive to provide you with a fresh perspective and understanding about the good things that are happening in our community and throughout the city by making you aware of events you can enjoy with your family. We commit to serving you with the same kind of talent, commitment and passion that we have done with the Los Angeles Sentinel. We will chart a course for those behind us to follow, in making sure that the best in our community is recognized, and that our young people have a model and benchmark for excellence to which they can aspire.
The Black press is one of only ten institutions in our community that has no equal. Between the Black press and the Black church, there are no two other institutions that have served our community better and with more dignity and respect. The Black press has acted and will continue to act as a guiding light to represent and chronicle all of our trials, tribulations, births and deaths. We intend to continue that rich and committed legacy and with your help we will. As we have done with the Los Angeles Sentinel, it is our pledge to make the “New” L.A. Watts Times Weekender one of the landmark Black newspapers in our community and in this nation. On behalf of the “Bakewell Family,” I thank you in advance for your support and look forward to a new and exciting future. Please do not hesitate to give us your thoughts, your feedback and get on board with the New L.A. Watts Times Weekender. Let’s make some noise and let’s make some news!!! Your Brother, Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. Executive Publisher
