ASSOCIATED PRESS Suspected bank robbers fleeing county sheriff’s deputies hurled cash from a speeding SUV on Wednesday, drawing people into the streets until a pickup blocked their path and they had to surrender. In a bizarre scene followed by TV helicopters, a large crowd pressed in as deputies with guns drawn pulled two men from the SUV in South Los Angeles. City police came to their aid and formed skirmish lines to move the crowd back. Along the pursuit’s route, people were seen scooping up the money. Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said it appeared the suspects threw the money in hopes of drawing people into the roadway to block the pursuing patrol cars. “A lot of people came out their houses, they saw this on TV, they saw that money was being thrown,” Smith told KNBC-TV. Several hundred people gathered around the deputies during the dangerous moment of arrest. “I think one of the folks told me that they thought there was more money in the vehicle and maybe they

The incident began 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles in the suburban Santa Clarita area where four men committed an armed bank robbery, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker told KCAL-TV. The robbers fled south by freeway and en route two robbers bailed out of the SUV in the Sylmar area of the San Fernando Valley. One suspect was taken into custody there Wednesday afternoon but the other remained at large. The SUV pursuit continued into downtown Los Angeles where the SUV exited the freeway and began a circuitous route through the older, narrow streets of the city's central and southern areas. The 90-minute chase came to an end when a big, heavy duty pickup made a right turn from a side street and blocked the SUV’s path. It was not clear whether that driver did so intentionally.

Black infant mortality Organizations and individuals working to stem the tide BY THANDISIZWE CHIMURENGA

LAWT STAFF AND WIRE REPORT “We’re still trying to put everything together,” said L.A. resident DeNeyvous Wiley, brother of slain businessman Donald Wiley. The family was still puzzled this week over the drive-by shooting of their 50-year-old relative, who was killed Saturday afternoon near Crenshaw Blvd. and 76th Street. He had been walking his cousin, who was also an employee of his credit repair business to her car when shots fired from a passing vehicle hit him several times. According to news reports, police were looking for five suspects but had no information on the motive for the shooting. “I [saw] him in the rear view mirror getting something out of the back seat and before I hit the corner that’s when everything happened,” Wiley’s cousin who asked not to be identified told reporters.

September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month and various events have been scheduled in Los Angeles County to raise awareness of this issue amongst African Americans. The matter of infant mortality – the death of a child before s/he reaches their first birthday – is a critical one within the African American community. According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control Office of Minority Health, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) for African Americans nationally in 1990 was 19 per 1000; for every 1000 Black babies born that lived to the age of one year, there were 19 that did not. Figures from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s website show that the IMR for African Americans in 2006 – the most recent year shown – was 11.6, which is still 2-3 times higher than the local and national averages for white/Caucasian, Latino/a and Asian babies. Rae Jones, executive director of Great Beginnings for Black Babies (GBBB) which was founded in 1990 to address Black infant mortality in Los Angeles County, says that pre-natal care is a large part of the organization’s work to address this crisis. “We encourage healthy lifestyles [and abstaining from] tobacco, alcohol or drugs, before during and after pregnancy,” Jones said, as these are the kinds of behaviors associated with negative health outcomes for Black babies that can be modified. As a means of “getting the word out,” the group is holding a day-long event, “Critical Condition – Mothers and Babies are Dying,” from 8 a.m. to noon, on Friday, Sept. 14, at The Ebell of Los Angeles, 743 S. Lucerne Blvd., near Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Sponsored in conjunction with other Black health organizations, GBBB and their network of community clinics, health centers and hospitals with pregnant and parenting women are hoping to reach a wide sphere of African American women.

The index and middle finger are used for examining women pre-labor and during labor by performing a dilation check – determining how many centimeters a woman’s birth canal has widened to allow the baby to be born. “As the economy gets worse, we’ve seen a shift from destitute pregnant women to middle class women now experiencing infant mortality at higher rates than ever before due to ‘racism related stress’,” said Jones. She describes the phenomenon as Black women passing on the myriad of external pressures and stresses the mother may be going through to See BLACK INFANT MORTALITY, page 6

Up front with Nat Trives: ‘Mr. Santa Monica’ BY BRENTON GAREN SPECIAL TO THE LAWT Currently serving on countless boards and community organizations, Nathaniel Trives has dedicated his life to helping others. Because of the high number of roles he fills or has filled in our community, he has come to be known as “Mr. Santa Monica” What is the origin of being called “Mr. Santa Monica?” The 2003-04 Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce past Board Chair Michael Grunig coined the phrase Mr. Santa Monica during his introductory remarks at my installation as 2004-05 Board Chair. Board member Kristina Andresen, in collaboration with Webmaster Marc Grobman of Tommy Dew Design Inc., created the website, www.MrSanta Monica.com. The website will be totally updated and renovated as part of a 2014 celebration of my life’s work in the non-profit philanthropic community. What have been some of your greatest professional achievements in Santa Monica? On a personal level, in 1971, I received the highest vote count in field of 18 candidates and was elected to the Santa Monica City Council; 1975 re-

elected to the City Council again with highest vote count in a field of 32 candidates; and on Tuesday, April 15, 1975 being elected Mayor of the City of Santa Monica by my Council colleagues for a two year term. During my eight years on the City Council there were a number of significant decisions made by our Council that have had a major impact on the reputation and quality of life in Santa Monica for some time. As the 1975 Santa Monica Centennial approached, the City Council created the Historical Site Committee, and adopted the Landmarks and Historic District Ordinance on March 24, 1976. The Santa Monica Landmarks and Historic Districts Ordinance was amended in 1987 and again in 1991, to create a more comprehensive preservation program. The ordinance established a seven member appointed Landmarks Commission with the power to designate Structures of Merit and Landmarks, and to make recommendations to the City Council regarding the designation of potential Historic Districts. Our Council actually approved the designation of 11 landmarks during my eight years as a member: Rapp Saloon;

Miles Playhouse; Santa Monica Looff Hippodrome; Santa Monica Pier; Miramar Moreton Bay Fig Tree; Methodist Episcopal Church in Ocean Park; Ocean Park Library; Parkhurst Building; First Roy Jones House; Horatio West Court; and Gussie Moran House. We actually ratified the purchase of the private Newcomb Pier to virtually save the Santa Monica Pier from demolition while I was Mayor. We added more park acreage and open space during our eight years than in quite some time; Virginia Avenue Park and Clover Park were significant improvements added to the open space inventory. We authorized the initial Rouse Hahn development of the Gehry designed Santa Monica Place. We took down the Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing plant on Ocean Park Blvd. and turned it into Santa Monica Business Park. Finally, again on a personal level, I was fortunate enough to attend both of President Bill Clinton’s inaugurations as a result of delivering an invitation from Santa Monica College to the President’s people in Washington in 1993 for him to speak at SMC. Lo and behold the first place in California that

Nat Trives Bill Clinton spoke as president of the United States was in the Pavilion on the SMC Campus on Feb. 21, 1993. Indeed a highlight of my professional career to that point. Now I’m looking forward to president of the Rotary Club of Santa Monica for the 2013-14 term. Who inspired you to become the man that you have become? My step-dad, James Blakley, who raised me following his marriage to my mother, Lillie Bell Blakley, on December 15, 1938. He instilled in me the core values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. Having been born in Birmingham, AL in 1934, now with

Dad at the head of our family we lived in Richmond, IN where my brother Ben and my sister Rachel were born; Lincoln Heights, OH, and Glendale, OH where my sister Joyce was born. We arrived in Santa Monica in the Spring of 1949 after traveling across country in a 1948 Ford Woody Station Wagon. California was good to us because our family grew with the births of my sister Carol and brother Bart. I attended Lincoln Jr. High (now Lincoln Middle School) and on to Samohi, for three years graduating in June 1952 then on for two years at Santa Monica See NAT TRIVES, page 15

He’s too young to vote, but 8-year-old Buritius “B.J.” Brannon says that he’s supporting Congresswoman Laura Richardson for re-election.

Rep. Laura Richardson (DCalifornia) kicked off her campaign for re-election on Saturday, September 8 in Carson, Calif. Currently representing the 37th Congressional District, the Congresswoman is now running in the newly created 44th district, which includes the cities of Carson, Compton, North Long Beach, Watts, Walnut Park, Lynwood, and portions of South Los Angeles. Supported by both the Congressional Black Caucus, which has identified the 44th district as a Voting

Rights Act seat in danger of being lost, and the California Legislative Black Caucus, Congresswoman Richardson has earned the support of minority communities through Southern California including African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian Pacific Islanders. Congresswoman Richardson currently represents 58 percent of the newly created 44th Congressional District, making her the natural incumbent. First elected to Congress in 2007, Congresswoman Richardson became the first person in United

States history to serve at the local, state, and federal level in the span of less than one year. Rep. Richardson is a member of International Association of Machinists, giving her the distinction being the first Machinist elected to Congress. The 44th Congressional District includes the cities of Carson, Compton, South Gate, Lynwood, and the communities of Watts, Wilmington, San Pedro, northern Long Beach, and Walnut Park. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.

Leslie James Bernard was welcomed into this life by Kirk and Julia "MaDear" Bernard on June 9, 1950 in Sibley, MS. Leslie was the sixth born of sixteen children. He completed his education in Natchez, MS and after graduating Sadie V. Thompson High School, he moved to Los Angeles with his family on July 3, 1968. Leslie leaves behind a loving wife, 3 beautiful daughters, 14 siblings and host of extended family and loving friends. His outgoing, loving and caring personality will truly be missed by all who came in contact and had a personal relationship with him. Services for Leslie will be held Friday September 14 at 1:00pm at Academy Cathedral 3141 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90305.

BLACK INFANT MORTALITY Continued from page 3 their unborn child. “We’ve known this [phenomenon was happening] as a community for awhile; we may have called it ‘Mother Wit’ back then, but now we have scientific data and the numbers bear out what is happening.” According to one local midwife, some of those external pressures include the ways a woman actually gives birth. Racha Tahani Lawler, a licensed midwife and the founder of the Community Birth Center in Inglewood, says that all women should have both “true and informed consent” – knowledge of all the options available to them – as well as “true and informed refusal” – freedom from punishment if they decline a particular option. According to Lawler, an alarming number of women of all ethnicities and incomes routinely undergo unnecessary procedures in local hospitals such as C-sections (a ‘Caesarian section’ – where a baby is delivered via surgically cutting the woman’s stomach and uterus); Inductions (the woman is put into labor before the baby is ready); and not allowing women who have had C-sections in the past to have a vaginal birth (VBAC – Vaginal Birth After Caesarian). Cesareanrates.com is a site that compiles the online reporting of Cesarean rates in the U.S. by hospitals and state departments of public health. The date lists rates by states as well as hospitals within the states. Data listed for 2010 shows the rate which certain hospitals perform C-sections as well as whether or not they allow VBAC procedures for women. Calls to the hospitals listed were not returned by press time. “If I’m told I need something, I need all of the information,” says Lawler. “Why I need a C-section and what are all of my options; why I need an Induction, and what are all of my options.” Lawler continued, “And if I don’t want a particular procedure, [the doctor/hospital] can’t call other doctors, or the head of OB-GYN (Obstetrics-Gynecology) or Pediatrics to bully me into having that procedure; [the doctor/hospital] can’t get a rush-

warrant from a judge to revoke my parental rights because [they] feel that they can act in the better interest of the parent,” which Lawler says also routinely happens. Lawler and dozens of other women participated in a national day of awareness this past Labor Day, sponsored by ImprovingBirth.Org, as part of an effort to “encourage and insist that all maternal healthcare providers practice evidence-based care.” The organization, which says it is comprised of “mothers and people who support mothers,” contends evidence-based maternity care – such as natural, vaginal birth – has been proven by reliable research to be beneficial to both babies and mothers and reduces various complications. The women congregated in front of Cedars-Sinai hospital with signs and chants, said Lawler, “ … to make the communities aware and make the hospitals uncomfortable so they will see it is the moms that want evidence-based care; not just rogue hippy mamas or women trying to buck the system, but the everyday, Sallys, Jessicas, LaQuishas and Tanyas.” As part of their outreach work to raise awareness of this issue and others, the Community Birth Center, located at 2242 W. Florence Ave., just West of Van Ness in Inglewood, is participating in the global launch of the film “Freedom for Birth: A Mothers’ Revolution,” on Sept. 20, at 6 pm. The film will be screened outdoors and will have a question-andanswer session immediately following. Lawler says the film looks at birth as a human rights issue around the world, and was created with the assistance of OBGYNs, academics, midwives, doulas, and others. The film also addresses the disparate treatment afforded to both midwives and the families that utilize midwives versus those that have births in a hospital setting. “The protections that are afforded women in hospitals should be afforded everywhere – midwives have the best statistics, doctors have the worst; midwives are not supported, doctors are,” Lawler said.

CBS/KCAL noted Assemblyman journalist co-chairs Davis’ House ‘Taste of Soul’ Resolution 43 Public schools: Standard English Learners passes Assembly In the last hours of the 2012 Legislative Session, Assemblyman Mike Davis (D-Los Angeles) successfully persuaded the Assembly to unanimously adopt HR 43 that will encourage the state legislature to provide funds for Standard English language assessment and instruction. According to recent statistics, California’s educational performance ranks 47 out of 50 in the nation. Improving the performance of students will also help the California School Systems performance status improve, say advocates of the bill. “The passage of HR 43 was significant because there is no resolution of any kind regarding Standard English learners,” explained Davis. “It will send a message to the superintendent of public instruction to focus on improving the academic performance of SELs. Anytime you have a group of students with no way to improve academic performance it is clear why our public schools cannot overcome the challenges that exist in our schools. HR 43 is the foundation for future legislation and outlines specific objectives to make these improvements.” When English language limitations go undetected it allows the achievement gap to widen as a student matriculates through the California school system, making post-secondary educational opportunities and career success a dim possibility. This resolution provides support for serving the

Problems Bruin in Westwood? UCLA Prized Recruiting Class in Jeopardy By Kenneth Miller | LAWT Columnist Last week while just chill’n, I got a phone call from one of my basketball friends who told me that UCLA prize recruit Shabazz Muhammad had already begun formulating plans to play overseas. The source indicated that Muhammad will be declared ineligible by the NCAA and will not be allowed to play for the Bruins or any other college program. While rumors regarding Muhammad, a 6’6 manchild, have been circulating for several months, recently the NCAA indicated that it was investigating the status of Muhammad, Kyle Anderson a 6’8 point guard out of New Jersey and post player Tony Parker. All three recruits were responsible for lifting the Bruins to the top recruiting class in the nation and thrusting them to the top of many college basketball preseason polls. UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero acknowledged the NCAA investigation of the student/athletes, but cited privacy laws that prevented him from discussing the matter. Both Anderson and Parker were allowed to participate during a recent exhibition tour to China with UCLA, but if the allegations are true that could have been their first and last experience with the UCLA program. The consequences of losing Muhammad or perhaps all three of the recruits would be a devastating blow to the UCLA basketball program and its head coach Ben Howland. Although, Howland has led the Bruins to three consecutive Final Four berths during his tenure, they did not win a single title. Some would say the championships were too hard to achieve because of Florida’s back-to back title run, but didn’t North Carolina State upset Georgetown? Rapid defections either to the NBA or via transfer, have not helped Howland’s case because most players who left early for the NBA still don’t openly endorse the head coach. A scathing Sports Illustrated article last season

painting a program in peril was brushed aside by AD Guerrero and the coaching staơ, but this current crisis regarding Muhammad and his fellow recruits could cripple the program. My sources tell me they would not be surprised if Muhammad is not cleared to play by the NCAA. I was also informed that Muhammad was seen in Orange County driving a 2012 Range Rover while purchasing roughly $5,000 worth of computer equipment. Expensive lunches in Hollywood have also been reported. Another source added that it was two prominent coaches who recruited both Muhammad and Anderson that turned UCLA in to the NCAA compliance oƥce. Because of the ongoing NCAA investigation neither the NCAA nor UCLA could comment on these latest allegations. The NCAA is carefully combing through all of the information it has received and therefore a ruling could come as early as November. Regardless of the outcome, don’t expect for local prep standouts to be running anytime soon to Westwood, especially when UCLA went out of region to hire Kory McCray AAU coach for its staơ. McCray, whose father founded he powerful AAU Atlanta Celtics, is qualified to be an NCAA assistant, but was primarily lured to UCLA by Howland to tap into the region from which he came. Parker is from Georgia. Qualified local coaches have been passed over by UCLA for years. This article is not written to accuse Howland or UCLA of anything. That responsibility rests in the hands of the NCAA. It is a search for the truth. Sources are not always reliable, but these sources have no bias against Howland or UCLA. They were providing information on a high profile recruit at UCLA. Only time will tell if they are accurate, and if they are, it spells trouble for the UCLA men’s basketball program.

This must change, because just as bees cannot sting and make honey at the same time, members of Congress cannot simultaneously make passionate enemies and expect political progress.” #14 – Rep. Barney Frank (Mass.): “When it comes to Wall Street reform, you’d think Republicans have amnesia. Like they’ve forgotten how we got into the Great Recession in the first place. Did they forget they were in power leading up to the crisis? That it was their plan that set Wall Street free and crashed the economy? Did they forget that this whole crisis started because banks gave out loans they knew people couldn’t pay? That those banks were gambling with our money? Using the kinds of financial tricks only Mitt Romney’s accountant would understand?” #13 – Newark Mayor Cory Booker: “When your country is in a costly war with our soldiers sacrificing abroad and our nation is facing a debt crisis at home, being asked to pay your fair share isn’t class warfare. It’s patriotism.” #12 – Massachusetts Gov. Devaul Patrick “Mitt Romney talks a lot about all

George E. Curry the things he’s fixed. I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn’t one of them. He’s a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it.” #11 – Former Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Christ: “Half a century ago, Ronald Reagan, the man whose relentless optimism inspired me to enter politics, famously said that he didn’t leave the

Democratic Party; the party left him. I can certainly relate. I didn’t leave the Republican Party; it left me. Then again, as my friend Jeb Bush recently noted, Reagan himself would have been too moderate and too reasonable for today’s GOP.” #10 – Massachusetts Senatorial Candidate Elizabeth Warren: “After all, Mitt Romney’s the guy who said corporations are people. No, Governor Romney, corporations are not people. People have hearts, they have kids, they get jobs, they get sick, they cry, they dance. They live, they love, and they die. And that matters. That matters. That matters because we don’t run this country for corporations, we run it for people.” #9 – First Lady Michelle Obama: “Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it…and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love. And he believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity…you do not slam it shut behind you…you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” #8 – HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: “What’s missing from the RomneyRyan plan for Medicare is Medicare. Now, the real work begins BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST The 2012 Democratic National Convention was an exuberant celebration of President Obama, his accomplishments, and the many ways his presidency has made us better off than we were four years ago. Between a stirring and incandescent speech by First Lady Michelle Obama, and an impassioned charge by former President Bill Clinton, the delegates were roused and the pressure was high for President Obama to deliver an inspiring charge to those who have already spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to participate in the convention. Truly, he delivered with a tone that was alternately exuberant, defiant, humorous, and apologetic. Most importantly, he spoke of our country as being at a fork in the road, with choices to be made. Forward with Obama, backward with Romney. He challenged the delegates to move forward and embrace his accomplishments. Spirits were certainly high as thousands of delegates left the Time Warner Cable Arena chanting, “Fired up, ready to go.” Why are political conventions held, anyway? Some are convinced they could’ve easily collapsed their three or four day schedule to just one or two days, because they are so scripted. Yet, one or two days might not be enough to engender the excitement that was present on [September 6] – the chanting, the hugging, the notion that, despite significant challenges, hard work will bring Democrats a victory in November. The convention is a tool to bring delegates, who are local leaders, into focused campaign activity. The convention is a tool to get the delegates out to organize and mobilize people. After the euphoria, though, reality sets in. In other words, [when the convention ends], the reality of unemployment rates sets in. While the unemployment rate dropped just a bit, from 8.3 to 8.1 percent, the level of job creation does not meet expectations. In other words, with only 96,000 jobs created, the Republicans have hay to make about the employment situation. On the other hand, Democrats can clearly say that that President Obama’s policies are holding the line, and that absent cooperation on the American Jobs Act, our president is doing the best that he or anyone else can do. Is holding the line good enough? The African American unemployment rate is 14.1 percent. With the underutilization index, Black unemployment rates were nearly 26 percent, which means that one in four African Americans do not have work. Some say this is an underestimate. There are 5 million people who are part of the long term unemployed, people who were out of work for half a year or more. These folks represent 40 percent of the unemployed. The data can be spun either way. Not enough? Holding the line? Failure? On the road to progress? As much as I was fired up by

Julianne Malveaux President Obama’s speech, and the ones that preceded it, I also listened it through the lens of Leroy, the brother who has been unemployed, or even out of the labor force, for half a year or more. Leroy listened, and Leroy applauded, and maybe Leroy even agreed that we are at a fork in the road. But when Leroy is asked if he is better off than he was four years ago, he is only thinking about his unemployment. He is thinking that he can’t pay his rent. He is thinking that he is worse off, and a great speech won’t make him feel better. The Democratic challenge is to meet Leroy where he lives, to explain to him that his job prospects might be even more restricted under a Romney-Ryan administration than an Obama one. The challenge is to move Leroy past his angst and indifference to the same enthusiasm that delegates felt on Thursday night. The speeches are over and the work now begins. Speeches won’t bring electoral victory. A solid ground operation and lots of elbow grease will. After the speech, as people filed out of the Time Warner Cable Arena, I spent some time with the Pacifica team from Los Angeles, Margaret Prescod, Davey D, and others. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Ralph Nader, and I talked about the speech and next steps. Nader is most critical, indicating that President Obama spoke neither of poverty nor increasing the minimum wage. While he is right, one wonders if, at a fork in the road, these are appropriate criticisms. Nader is a critic of the two-party political system, but that’s all we have now, so we have to work it. When President Obama wins this election, there will be more euphoria, which is a good thing. Then, reality must set in, with advocacy for the poor, as well as the middle class, with revisions to the tax code that eliminate corporate welfare, and with a greater commitment to quality education. From my perspective, too many people enjoy the euphoria and avoid the work. Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, D.C.-based economist and writer. Nate Parker in two new films, “Arbitrage” and “Red Hook Summer” BY SANDRA VARNER/TALK2SV SPECIAL TO THE LAWT High stakes money dealing and child molestation weigh heavily by any measure; eliciting headlines though, by comparison, sit at opposite ends of angst and disdain. But the impressive dexterity of actor Nate Parker demonstrates his ability to balance the scales of emotion, making him one of today’s finest on screen talents. Parker costars in “Arbitrage” the Richard Gere dramatic thriller centered on financial improprieties, from Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. Parker also costars in “Red Hook Summer,” the Spike Lee intense drama that posits religion and fractured family dynamics amid sexual innocence, now playing in theaters. “Arbitrage,” from writer Nicholas Jarecki, is described as a taut and alluring suspense thriller about love, loyalty, and high finance. New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller (Gere), on the eve of his 60th birthday, appears the very portrait of success in American business and family life. Behind the gilded walls of his mansion, Miller is in over his head, desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before the depths of his fraud are revealed. Miller struggles to conceal his duplicity from his wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and daughter, Brooke (Brit Marling), heir-apparent, all the while balancing an extramarital affair. Just as he's about to unload his troubled empire, a bloody accident forces him to juggle family, business, and crime with the aid of Jimmy Grant (Parker), a face from Miller's past. The 32-year-old Parker’s expanding movie career includes over a dozen feature films. He first received critical attention for his starring role in “The Great Debaters” opposite Denzel Washington. He followed this with a role starring alongside Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. in Red Tails. He is currently in production on David Lowery’s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” opposite Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster. Other credits include: “Pride,” “Felon,” “Tunnel Rats” with Michael Pare and “The Secret Life Of Bees,” which featured an all-star cast of Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Dakota Fanning and Paul Bettany. On stage, Parker appeared in “American Voices” opposite Dustin Hoffman, Annette Bening, Rosario Dawson and James Cromwell. Recently, I spoke to Parker, a Norfolk, VA native who holds an honorary Doctorate from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and who is known to be fastidious in preparing for each character portrayal. “The first role I ever had was on television; it was on “Cold Case.” If I remember, it was a young man who had been molested by a swim coach. A number of years later, they looked into the murder of the swim coach and my character’s name came up. I can remember looking at the material trying to figure out how I would create this world and how I would be true to this character. Being someone who has never been molested, I just reminded myself that somewhere in the world a young kid — who is a victim — is going to be watching this and he will be sitting next to the person that is victim-

Nate Parker as “Jimmy” in “Arbitrage.” izing him. How would I be able to speak on behalf of that kid and will I do a good job? Will that kid say, ‘he’s so honest?’ That is the kind of approach I take in terms of what I choose to do and the type of messages I want to draw, based on my character analysis.” His process is enduring. “I come from an athletic background; I was a wrestler and in wrestling the stakes are high. If you don’t prepare, it can mean your health. You can break something or hurt yourself. Wrestling is a one-on-one sport and many times people think it’s you against the other person but most often it’s you against yourself. I take that training with me: the discipline and the work ethic. So far it’s paid off.” There are nuances in “Arbitrage,” also costarring Tim Roth, that hearken of days gone by yet there are shades steeped in present day, particularly the sanguine protagonist who doubles as the villain in question. Parker places well in period dramas. Namely, in “The Great Debaters,” the tender love scene with Journee Smollett — both sitting quietly in a boat in the bayou — rates among my favorite on screen romantic events, their innocence is affecting. Parker seems at ease vacillating between eras. “I think that’s probably one of the greatest compliments I have received in my career and perhaps speaks to the reality that — in many ways — we’ve lost the power of the young black man. “It’s been replaced in the media by the angry black man, or the violent black man, the despondent black man, or the weak black man or the emasculated black man. I put ‘black man’ on it because I’m specifically speaking to our community. People ask me why I play so many period roles and my answer is simple. I tell them [that] when I see more material reflecting black men in a positive way — that will be progress for the community instead of a detriment — then people will see more contemporary roles [from me].” Our conversation moves to his role in Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer.” Parker, as Box, is a jaded street thug, once a “church boy” gone by the wayside. The “Red Tails” star opined, “I think it’s important that we recognize those men we see on the street corners

with their pants down and their hats backwards; with the ‘blood’ colors and the pistol in their waist, that they are the residue of having been discarded. It first comes with the leadership, you go to any school, and the success of any of those young people is a result of the leadership that has come before them. The people that have guided them so I think with this young man, Box, while it’s easy to play what a gang member is, it’s harder to really speak to his truth. His back story — you know that he’s trying; he was in the church and his mother passed away. No one filled in the gap. That’s what’s happening in our community: we’re losing our kids at ages, 12, 13, 14… the girls get pregnant at 11, 12, 13… the boys are becoming gangsters at 11, 12, 13, and it’s not because they are criminal minded. It’s not because they want to die. Largely, it’s because of that impermanence where they feel like tomorrow is not guaranteed. It’s that abandonment where they feel like they don’t have the support of people around them. That can make them feel like tomorrow is not guaranteed so they are raised most often by people that will take advantage, sometimes its gangs.” Reaching further into his perspective, “Sometimes a gang will provide that security, that safety net, that social experience: all the things that you would hope one can gain in a positive, healthy environment. I think there’s a lot of judgment that goes on in our generation, among young people, and much of that judgment happens in church. In my own church, our pastor is younger than me now. I told him I was excited because when I used to go into church all I would see were older people just waiting to die. They’d lived their lives and now it’s time for them to keel over, so they want to make sure that they are ‘right with God.’ Today, if you look at the energy of young people and what we’re doing with Twitter, Facebook and all these social media outlets, there is such an opportunity for the church to gain a new energy. When this script (“Red Hook Summer”) was brought it to me I saw so much in it. The church has a responsibility. It’s my prayer that they step up to the plate and reach out to these young people.” Read more at www.Talk2SV.com.

Kanye West hasn’t released a solo album since 2010, but the rapper has kept relevant with another strong year. Now, BET is taking notice. West received the most nominations with 17 for the seventh annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, which will air Oct. 9. The rapper has had a big year as a producer, performer and director. He also collaborated with Jay-Z on the hit album, “Watch the Throne.” Rapper 2 Chainz scored 13 nominations and Drake earned 11 nods, respectively. The nominations were announced September 12. The ceremony will be taped Sept. 29 at Atlanta's Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. Actor and comedian Mike Epps will return as host for the fourth straight year. Hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty, who committed suicide earlier this month, will be honored during the show.

JENESSE Continued from page 7 in Los Angeles and a multitude of youth nationally to talk about dating violence and healthy relationships. Brown and his staff reached out to Jenesse youth this summer with visits to Camp Jenesse and a recent visit to a Jenesse facility, which was organized by The Change, where Brown painted a special mural for the kids living there. Angela Parker, Director of Trainings and Programs said, “There is no denying Mr. Brown’s popularity and the impact that it has on our youth to see him be a part of this conversation. His participation really drives home the message that a person can choose to overcome their past hardships and to work towards a better future, not just for themselves, but for their loved ones and their community.” Brown said, “It's in my heart to show my fans, my friends and family and the families at Jenesse who stood by me they were right to give me another chance. I'm working hard to make them proud.” According to its representa-

tives, Jenesse Center is a national non-profit domestic violence intervention and prevention organization that provides a holistic, comprehensive program to nurture victimized families back to a place of mental, financial, physical and emotional well-being. The Change is Jenesse’s national youth organization which conducts community outreach with an emphasis on conflict resolution strategies, peer-topeer advocacy and mentorship in a fresh way that appeals to young people. The organization’s beliefs include the following: 1. Domestic violence is a family issue. 2. Children and teens are equal victims of domestic violence. 3. Young men have to be part of the conversation. 4. Domestic violence is sometimes a generational cycle of family violence. 5. This cycle can be broken with proper education, awareness, counseling and preparation.

Concert giant Minaj confirms her rap was seeks Jermaine no Romney endorsement Jackson’s book drafts ASSOCIATED PRESS

In this Sept. 10, 2009 file photo, Jermaine Jackson, brother of late U.S. pop star Michael Jackson, smiles prior to a press conference on “The Tribute - In Memory of Michael Jackson” in Berlin. BY ANTHONY MCCARTNEY ASSOCIATED PRESS Concert giant AEG Live is seeking book drafts and manuscripts by Jermaine Jackson that it claims may reveal details about his superstar brother that will help its defense in a lawsuit filed by the singers’ mother. AEG is seeking drafts and manuscripts of Jackson’s recent book, “You Are Not Alone,” as well as an unpublished memoir it claims may focus on Michael Jackson’s alleged drug abuse. Jermaine Jackson’s attorneys are fighting the request, calling them overly broad and in violation of the First Amendment, according to court filings. Turning over the writings also would violate the privacy of Michael Jackson’s three children and other family members and constitute a “fishing expedition,” according to documents filed Monday. AEG’s attorneys contend the writings are important to its defense in a case filed by the singers’ mother claiming the concert promoter failed to properly supervise Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death. Their efforts seek drafts of a book described as “Legacy: Surviving the Best and the Worst,” which was reportedly in the works several years before the pop superstar's death. AEG claims drafts of the work would show issues “of immense relevance to this case, including Michael Jackson's rumored long-term abuse of prescription medication.” AEG’s attorney Marvin Putnam wrote in an email that the company was seeking the documents because, during his book tour, Jermaine Jackson publicly touted the “details

of his brother’s life and death.” Putnam also wrote that Jermaine Jackson claimed he was the “only person qualified to deliver the real Michael.” The writings are not covered by protections afforded to investigative journalists since they are memoirs, AEG wrote in its motion to get a judge to order the release of the materials. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28. Jermaine Jackson’s lawyer Kevin Boyle, who also represents his mother in the lawsuit against AEG, was not immediately available for comment. AEG had promoted Michael Jackson’s comeback shows, titled “This Is It,” which were canceled after his unexpected death due to an overdose of a hospital anesthetic the singing had been given to help him sleep. The company also is seeking to depose Jermaine Jackson. And it obtained a judge’s order Wednesday requiring Jackson’s longtime friend and dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein to appear for a deposition next month. Katherine Jackson sued AEG in September 2010, and the case is scheduled for trial in April 2013. The company also is involved in a separate lawsuit filed by Lloyd’s of London over Michael Jackson’s life insurance policy. Putnam said the company has informed Lloyd’s that it has recouped its losses and is no longer pursuing the claim. Any proceeds should be paid to a company that benefits Michael Jackson’s estate, he said. AEG’s formal withdrawal of the claim is expected soon, as well as its dismissal from the case filed by the insurer.

It’s official: Nicki Minaj did not endorse Mitt Romney in a recent rap. The flamboyant rapper confirmed Monday September 10 on Twitter that she was taking literary license when she referenced the Republican nominee for president. Some took her words to mean she was backing President Barack Obama’s opponent. Not Obama, though, who told radio station WPYO-FM in Orlando, Fla., that he didn't think it was a Romney plug, adding: “She likes to play different characters.” In her tweet, Minaj thanked Obama for understanding “my creative humor and sarcasm,” then noted: “the smart ones always do ... sends love & support.” Minaj rapped the verse in question while making an appearance on the Lil Wayne mix tape track “Mercy.” A message sent to Minaj’s publicist was not immediately returned.

Robert Griffin III is the first rookie quarterback to win an offensive player of the week award after his debut game. The NFL announced Wednesday September 12 that Griffin is the NFC offensive player of the week for his performance in the Washington Redskins' 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints. The No. 2 overall draft pick completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's victory — making him the first player in league history to amass 300-plus yards passing, two or more passing touchdowns and no interceptions in an NFL debut. Griffin is also the first rookie quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards and win a season opener. The league started giving the player of the week awards in 1984.

Serena Williams surviving, thriving at age 30 BY RACHEL COHEN ASSOCIATED PRESS Serena Williams belted out “I Will Survive” while celebrating her U.S. Open title with some karaoke. “I thought it was a great story for me to sing that last night,” she said Monday. “I really felt the words. I really, really felt those words.” Survival is rallying when two points away from losing the final to top-ranked Victoria Azarenka earlier that evening. Survival, even more fittingly, is coming all the way back from the health problems that kept her from competing for 10 months in 2010-11. Survival is getting through a U.S. Open with no tirades at officials as in her last two trips to Flushing Meadows. The site of her first major championship 13 years ago started to induce more dread than nostalgia. “My best memory, then after that it just went downhill,” Williams said. “From line calls that were completely outrageous to more line calls that were outrageous. NAT TRIVES Continued from page 5 College earning an AA Degree in 1954. Do you have a current role model/mentor in your life? Yes! And she is my partner of more than 57 years, my wife Ida. She has supported me, encouraged me, and been my closest confidant and mentor all during our marriage. We were married on July 3, 1955 causing me to take a break from seeking my academic endeavors and start to earn a living. We were blessed with our one and only child, Toni in 1956 while I was employed by the US Postal Service. In 1958 I was sworn as a member of the Santa Monica Police Department and stayed 11 years earning the rank of Sergeant and spending five years as president of the Santa Monica Police Officers Association. With the encouragement of my wife I returned to school while working at SMPD and earned a BS in Criminal Justice at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). When I left the Police Department in 1969, I was offered an Assistant Professor position at CSULA and teaching, I earned my MPA from UCLA Department of Political Science in 1974. Twenty-three later in 1997 I retired from CSULA as an Emeritus Professor of Criminal Justice. In the mean time, again with the counsel of my wife, I took unpaid leave from my CSULA position to take an interim position at Santa Monica College as Deputy Superintendent and Chief Government Relations Officer for the District under the then president, Dr Richard Moore. That position lasted seven years until I retired from public service work after racking up 40 years of a fantastic career in education and government. You are a big advocate for many of the City’s non-profits, why do you have so much passion for helping people? All my life I have held leadership positions in my schools, church, and non-profit organizations. I fondly

remember being a camp counselor for three summers (1950, 51 and 52) at the Santa Monica YMCA’s Camp Big Bear. My passion for helping those less fortunate led me to become involved more than 20 boards over the past six decades. I, along with the late Clyde Smith and others, were founding members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Westside Coalition. When the local NCCJ chapter was closed by nation, along with a core of former NCCJ board members felt the need for our own human relations council, and now we have the Santa Monica Bay Area Human Relations Council, Chaired by

Martin O’Malley: “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan now say they want to take America back. And so we ask: Back to what? Back to the failed policies that drove us into a deep recession? Back to the days of record job losses? Back to the days when insurance companies called being

Jody Priselac. While I was on the City Council we gave seed money to the Center for Healthy Aging (CHA) and after I left the Council many years later I was involved in recognizing the need to centralize certain senior services and helped in negotiating a merger between WISE and CHA. Now WISE & Healthy Aging is one of the areas top senior services provider. From all your community work on various boards, commissions and elected positions over the decades, how do you think you’ve shaped Santa Monica into what it is today? Simply stated, I just happened to have come along at the right time and have made myself available to help many organizations fulfill the missions in order to meet their public good goals and objectives. What do you love most about Santa Monica? This community has evolved to a point in its history that makes it a premiere tourist destination. The hospitality industry now being a major player in sustaining the economic vitality that is needed to support the social safety net the leaders of the town see as critically important to the fabric of our quality of life. We are a city that values innovation and sustainability living successfully side by side. We have three worldclass medical centers. We have first class governmental officials that steward our resources well enough to be one of less than fifty cities in the entire USA to possess an AAA bond rating. Public safety and emergency services, second to none. The best community college in the nation and a public school system, as well as premier independent schools, that not only educates our kids but at the same time helps to enhance our real estate values. My daughter Dr. Toni Trives is Chair of the Modern Language Department at SMC. I have the best of both worlds my grandson Tristan is at Crossroads Elementary and my grandson Tanner is at Grant Elementary Pre-school. Why not love this town?
