Lawsuit Claims Bishop Long Coerced Males Into Sex BY ERRIN HAINES ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER ATLANTA — Two men have filed a lawsuit accusing Bishop Eddie Long of exploiting his role as pastor of an Atlanta-area megachurch to coerce them into sexual relationships when they were young members of his congregation. Lawyers for the men, now 20 and 21, say they filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in DeKalb County Court. The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they were victims of sexual impropriety. Craig Gillen, Long’s attorney, said Tuesday the pastor “categorically denies the allegations.” “We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action,” Gillen said, adding that Long had not yet been served with copies of the lawsuits. The men were 17- and 18-yearold members of Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, when they say Long abused his spiritual authority to

seduce them with cars, money, clothes, jewelry, international trips and access to celebrities. B.J. Bernstein, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, said that when the relationships started, the plaintiffs were past the legal age of consent in Georgia, which is 15. “Defendant Long has utilized his spiritual authority to coerce certain young male members ... into engaging in sexual acts and relationships for his own personal sexual grafitication,” the lawsuits read. When asked about a possible motive for the accusations, Gillen referred to a break-in at Long’s office in June. Bergstein said one of the plaintiffs is facing a criminal burglary charge in the incident. She said the break-in was a way of lashing out at Long. Bernstein said she contacted the U.S. Attorney’s Office earlier this month when she became aware of the young men’s allegations. She did not know what action, if any, the agency planned to take.

Orzy Theus, a spokesman for the DeKalb County district attorney's office, said she was not aware on Tuesday of an investigation in that office related to the allegations. Long was appointed pastor of New Birth in 1987. Then, the church had about 150 members. Less than four years later, the church had grown to more than

NEWS IN AFRICA French Team Arrives In Rwanda to Probe 1994 Crash BY EDMUND KAGIRE ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — French investigators said Sept. 13 they will try to find out who shot down the plane carrying the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi in

1994, sparking the Rwandan genocide that killed more than half a million people. A previous French investigation suggested that people close to current Rwandan President Paul Kagame may have been responsible for the crash that killed Rwanda’s then-leader Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira. Rwanda cut off diplomatic ties

with France as a result in 2006 and restored them in November 2009. The Rwandan government’s own investigation, released in January, suggested that the plane was shot down by Habyarimana’s allies as an excuse for starting the genocide. Rwanda’s Justice Minister Tharcisse Karugarama said Sept. 13 that the government would fully cooperate with the French team.

They arrived on Sept. 10 and were planning to be in Rwanda for a week. “They asked for permission to come and carry out investigations and the government of Rwanda thought it was OK for them to come and find out and know that what was being said was false and the accusations are empty,” said Rwanda Defense Force spokesman Lt. Col. Jill Rutaremara.

Juvenal Habyarimana The French judiciary is looking into the downing of Habyarimana’s plane because the crew was French. Judges Marc Trevidic and Nathalie Poux are heading the 17-person team including experts in aeronautics, ballistics and topography. “The investigations will be conducted in an independent and transparent manner, will be impartial and objective and the two concerned parties will be involved and will follow the investigations as they happen,” the judges said in a statement. After the April 6, 1994 crash, militants from the Hutu ethnic majority quickly set up roadblocks across the capital, Kigali, and began killing Tutsis and moderate Hutus the following day. More than 500,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were massacred in 100 days of frenzied killing. The slaughter stopped when Kagame’s Tutsi rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front, toppled the Hutu extremists. He is now the country’s president.

Nigeria: More Candidates Declare For Presidency ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Two new candidates have declared for Nigeria’s presidential election as confusion continues over when the poll actually will be held. Kwara state Gov. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, a Muslim, announced Monday he would seek the nomination of the ruling People’s Democratic Party. That leaves a field of four Muslims competing against President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, in the party’s primary. Meanwhile, Nuhu Ribadu announced he would seek the nomination of the Action Congress of Nigeria, the oil-rich nation’s biggest opposition party. Ribadu served as the chief of the nation’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, pursuing corruption cases until being pushed out of power. The election was scheduled for Jan. 22, but electoral officials have asked for a delay. See NEWS IN AFRICA, page 9

Inglewood School District Turns New Construction Into New Opportunity For Learning BY DANNY J. BAKEWELL JR. SPECIAL CONTRIBUTING EDITOR The new construction of La Tijera K thru 8 School on the corner of La Tijera Boulevard just north of Fairview has only been underway for about six months and is not scheduled to be completed until January of 2011, but the Inglewood Unified School District is already putting the latest construction project being built using Prop K Bond Funds to work. Over 40 students, faculty and staff from La Tijera School and OTIS College of Art and Design recently visited the construction site of La Tijera to see how the new school was being built and what new features this educational facility will have. The students were given a guided tour of the construction site by Bernard Brothers (general contractor) Senior Project Manager, Michael Toepfer, were given

explainations of what many of the subcontractors on the site were doing and what they were responsible for and then were shown a 3D video tour of the project by Betsy Dougherty of the architectural firm Dougherty and Dougherty (project architect) to see what the finished project will look like. The students and staff were also able to ask questions of the general contractor (Bernard Bros.), the project architect (Dougherty & Dougherty) and the construction management team (Turner/Bakewell) about just what all goes into building a first class school facility and about all the jobs that are created from a project of this size and nature. Arnold Butler, president of the Inglewood School Board, said, “On behalf of the Inglewood School Board, I am excited about the manner in which our new partners have stepped up with their outreach to our community. In fact our young people were thrilled with the

The Board is extremely pleased with the performance of our new partners since they’ve shown that Inglewood is integrating itself into the community from where our children come from.” Bernard Bros. Construction the general contractor for the project took the lead in putting together this one of a kind tour and site visit and worked closely with the rest of the site construction project team to insure that the students had both a safe, educational and fun experience when visiting the site. Often schools are built in neighborhoods without any opportunity for

w w w . l a w a t t s t i m e s . c o m

the children or the community to share in the project and more often than not, no one sees what is going on at the site until the ribbon is cut and the school is open for business. This is one of the first projects being built where the students and the community get a chance to see firsthand what is going on before the school is ever opened. The school is being built with one additional community enhancement. Many of the students who participated in the site visit also were part of the design team, they met with the project architects during the planning stages and gave their input on what they wanted built and designed into their new school and this tour gave them a chance to actually see that their ideas made it into the actual design of the school.

The guided tour is just another part of the major outreach effort and community involvement that the Inglewood Unified School District Board Members have required during the construction of this new facility. In August community residents were invited to an open house which the construction team, school principal and school board members attended to explain the schedule for the project and answer any questions or address any concerns residents may have about the project. There is also a monthly Prop K meeting to keep the community involved. The meeting is held the last Thursday of each month in the MultiPurpose room at the existing La Tijera Middle School. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

BRIEFS Ex-City Manager Among 8 Arrested in Calif. Scandal BY JOHN ROGERS (AP) LOS ANGELES — Officials say an ex-city manager and mayor are among eight people arrested in a corruption investigation in the scandalplagued Los Angeles suburb of Bell. The district attorney’s office announced Tuesday that ex-city manager Robert Rizzo and Mayor Oscar Hernandez were arrested along with several council members. The district attorney, state attorney general and others have been conducting investigations of officials in the small working-class city since it was disclosed they were paying themselves huge salaries. Rizzo was making nearly $800,000 a year. The investigations involve allegations of corruption, misuse of public funds and voter fraud. A message left at Rizzo’s Huntington Beach home was not immediately returned.

Obama: Black Lawmakers Must Rally Voters Back Home BY MARK S. SMITH AP WRITER WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama implored black voters on Saturday to rekindle the passion they felt for his groundbreaking campaign and turn out in force this fall to repel Republicans who are ready to “turn back the clock.” In a fiery speech to the Congressional Black Caucus, Obama warned that Republicans hoping to seize control of Congress want “to do what’s right politically, instead of

what's right — period.” “I need everybody here to go back to your neighborhoods, to go back to your workplaces, to go to the churches, and go to the barbershops and go to the beauty shops. And tell them we’ve got more work to do,” Obama said to cheers from a black-tie audience at the Washington Convention Center. “Tell them we can’t wait to organize. Tell them that the time for action is now.” His speech acknowledged what pollsters have been warning Democrats for months — that blacks are among the key Democratic groups who right now

seem unlikely to turn out in large numbers in November. “It’s not surprising given the hardships that we’re seeing across the land that a lot of people may not be feeling very energized, very engaged right now,” Obama said. “A lot of folks may be feeling like politics is something that they get involved with every four years when there’s a presidential election, but they don’t see why they should bother the rest of the time.” But he said he’s just begun rolling back a devastating recession that’s come down “with a vengeance” on African-American neighborhoods that were already suffering. “We have to finish the plan you elected me to put in place,” Obama said. Summoning the joy many blacks felt at the election of the first AfricanAmerican president and recalling the words of the late actor and activist Ossie Davis, he declared, “It’s not the man, it’s the plan.” Obama was treated to several standing ovations in the darkened cavernous center. But the hall grew quiet as Obama warned, “Remember, the other side has a plan too. It’s a plan to turn back the clock on every bit of progress we’ve made.” Obama never spoke the name of the Republican Party, but repeatedly invoked its policies — and did name its House leader, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, a favorite Obama target in recent days. Members of “the other side,” Obama said, “want to take us backward. We want to move America forward.” With polls showing his party facing

What made it possible for me to be here today are Americans throughout our history making our union more equal, making our union more just, making our union more perfect,” Obama said. “That’s what we need again.” The caucus is a group reeling from ethics charges against two leading mem-

bers, Democratic Reps. Charles Rangel of New York and Maxine Waters of California. Republicans are preparing TV ads spotlighting the cases, even though House trials are now not expected until after the November election. Obama mentioned neither case in his 27-minute speech. For Obama, the caucus dinner at the Washington Convention Center capped a week of concerted outreach to minority supporters, a traditional wellspring of Democratic strength. Zimbabwe Constitution Meetings Halted By Violence HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwean lawmakers in charge of a constitutional reform program say their public canvassing was halted after weekend violence disrupted several gatherings. Panel member Douglas Mwonzora said Monday the meetings would be postponed indefinitely. At least five people were injured in clashes and stone-throwing between rival party supporters in one Harare township Sunday. Four other meetings across Harare were abandoned, the panel said. Riot police were posted Monday

at sites of the disturbances. Under a two-year-old coalition agreement between longtime rivals President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the former opposition leader, a new constitution must be drawn up before fresh elections can be held, possibly next year.

Hispanics living in poverty jumped from 23.2 percent to 25.3 percent. As Janet Murguia, president of National Council of La Raza, makes clear: One Nation Working Together is a coalition with a mission. “We have been able to bring together groups and individuals who have never worked together before because we all share the common need for more and secure jobs now, equal justice for every person in this country, and access to high- quality public education for all children,” Murguia said. The One Nation Working Together movement aims to recommit every person in the United States to the principles that this nation was founded upon: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The Need in Haiti Remains: How You Can Help This Holiday Season And Beyond (ARA) — As is true with many catastrophes, the tragic story makes international news in the immediate days following, and there is an outpouring of support and aid to those in need. However, soon good-hearted contributors have donated all they can, while bureaucratic red tape begins to impede progress, and the story fades from the headlines. In the end, the basic needs of those affected still remain. This is the case in Haiti. Approximately eight months after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck 15 miles outside of Port-au-Prince, killing 200,000 and destroying 300,000 houses, the needs of the Haitian people remain. Although there was a tremendous international response in the aftermath of the disaster, little has been done to bring meaningful relief to the people. Almost all the rubble from collapsed buildings remains uncleared, and approximately 1.5 million people are still living in tent camps or under tarps without water, electricity, or sewage facilities. Despite bureaucratic red tape, some companies, missions and individuals have recognized the ongoing need and have found creative ways to help on their own. Here are a couple inspiring stories: Last April, Binghamton, N.Y.based Johnson Outdoors Gear LLC, maker of Eureka! tents, launched Sheltering Haiti 2010, a social media campaign that used the company’s presence on Facebook to get the word out about its tent drive for Haiti. The campaign was to benefit the OASIS Institute and the 650 orphaned Haitian

children it would house, many of whom were living on the streets. The OASIS Institute proposed to house, educate and care for these orphans through a new, holistic Haiti-based approach to adoption. An “adopt a child at a distance program,” the OASIS Institute enables Haitian children orphaned during the earthquake to be raised in their home country via subsidies by individual sponsors whose monthly donations fulfill ongoing needs such as food, shelter and education. While

it aimed to be fully operational within one year, the Institute was in need of interim housing via a tent village — the OASIS Camp —currently under construction in Tabarre near Port-au-Prince. Johnson Outdoors Gear shipped 100 tents — each one providing temporary shelter for four children — for the tent village and has plans to ship another 100 tents imminently. “We are very excited about expanding our involvement in relief efforts for Haiti,” says Bill Kelly, general manager of Johnson

Outdoors Gear. “We urge all our consumers and their friends to 'like' Eureka! on Facebook and make a difference.” The effort was made in conjunction with citizen volunteer Jenny Dubin, who contacted the company after witnessing firsthand the devastation and need to do more to help. Dubin served as liaison on the ground between Johnson Outdoors and the OASIS Institute. Last May, in nearby Milford, Pa., the parishioners of St. Patrick's Church had a similar experience when Rev. Gerald Mullally turned 60. In lieu of receiving gifts for himself, he requested that anyone in his congregation

wishing to give a gift instead make a donation to help those in Haiti. His congregation raised more than $12,000 to help rebuild the parish of Notre Dame du Perpetuel Secours in Fragneau-Ville in Port-au-Prince. Invited to visit that parish, Rev. Mullally and six of his parishoners went to Haiti to help in whatever way they could. After witnessing the devastation firsthand, the parishioners returned home, formed Hands of Mary for Haiti (www.handsofmaryforhaiti.org) and established plans to send future missions that will include medical teams, electricians, and other professionals to help rebuild the devastated areas. “The church is the only agency that stands a chance of getting these people what they need,” Rev. Mullally says. “Governmental help is not forthcoming. The parish is the source of their housing, food and medical care. No one else provides it.” How you can help Participation in the Eureka! Sheltering Haiti 2010 campaign is free. Simply click to “like” the Eureka! Facebook page. For every 20 “likes” the Eureka! page receives and for every five pictures or videos (optional) posted to the page, one tent will be donated to the OASIS camp in Haiti until the company's goal of 200 tents has been reached. Johnson Outdoors Gear stresses that the tents will ship regardless of the success of the Facebook campaign. For more information, visit www.eurekatent.com/haiti. Donations for Hands of Mary for Haiti can be sent to Rev. Gerald Mullally, Hands of Mary for Haiti, P.O. Box W, Milford, PA 18337.

Islam

By Yussuf J. Simmonds Co-Managing Editor In 1994 the president of a West African country, a Catholic, in welcoming a Muslim delegation to his country, stated that he believed if Jesus and Muhammad were alive at the same time, they would have been the best of friends. That is a very profound statement. As it often happens, many people formulate their views of events – at home and abroad – from the media particularly television and the movies (and now, the Internet) and understanding Islam is no different, even though Muslims have been a part of American society since its beginning. Many nonMuslims get their understanding of Islam from movies like “Muhammad, Messenger of God”; “Khartoum”; “King Richard and the Crusaders”; “Malcolm X”; “the Siege”; and “Roots”; notwithstanding that movies and television shows are usually made for entertainment purposes and to generate profits. (Spike Lee said that he took some creative liberty and artistic freedom with the movie, Malcolm X; it was not exactly like Malcolm’s autobiography. Because in making a movie, one has to consider the audience who is coming to be entertained; otherwise, it would be a documentary and it would not return a profit. It is a business.) Historical research reveals that a great portion of slaves brought to America were Muslims and part of the process of keeping slaves was to produce a being totally removed from his original self and this was done skillfully over centuries of slavery. When Muslim immigrants voluntarily came to the Western Hemisphere, their intent was to become westernized or Europeanized. They brought Islam and practiced “quietly;” they blended into the landscape and for the most part, they just wanted to get along. However, some of the ways of Islam were strange and mysterious to Westerners, and as a rule, many people fear and feel threatened by that which they do not understand. Nevertheless, there was generally a peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims in the West … until now … or so it seems. At the beginning of the third decade of the 20th century, an event occurred in the United States that placed Islam, front and center, in the spotlight. Even though it was not caused by the traditional Muslims from the East, it spotlighted Islam and Muslims. It was the Nation of Islam (Nation). It was different and comprised of only Black people aptly called the so-called negroes of America. The nation thrived despite tremendous adversity from all quarters: Whites and non-Muslim Blacks; Christians, Jews and Gentiles; atheists and agnostics; young and old; rich and poor; and other Muslims who were doing their best to blend into the American way of life.

Like Christians who have different denominations: Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Catholics, etc.; there are different sects in Islam also: Sunnis, Shiites, Hanafis, etc. (often referred to as adherents of Orthodox Islam), and of course, the Nation of Islam (initially referred to by Dr. Eric C. Lincoln as Black Muslims). But some say Muslims do believe in the Jesus of Christianity and the Moses of Judaism; they are both referenced in the Quran, the Scriptures of Muslims. In the United States, Imams and Sheiks ministered to Muslims in Orthodox Islam; the Honorable Elijah Muhammad led the Nation of Islam. Both believed in Allah (God) and followed the religious principles of Islam. But the spotlight always shined brightly on the Nation. In 1959, a documentary titled “The Hate that Hate Produced” was shown on national television with the intent of “killing” the Nation. It had the opposite effect; Blacks came to the Nation in droves. In addition, Minister Malcolm X, as the national spokesman and one of the most sought-after public speakers, was a master at attracting converts to the Nation. Like Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali (then the world’s heavyweight boxing champion) was a magnet for drawing converts. During the 1960s, the Nation was the face of Islam in America even though there were large numbers of other Muslims in the country, and coexistence was lukewarm. Then Malcolm X left the Nation and became a Sunni Muslim. Many African Americans became adherents to Orthodox Islam, and began “mainstreaming” Islam as their way of life. It must be understood that Islam, as practiced in Muslim countries, could not be comfortably replicated in America … just as a matter of practicality. For example, the muezzin’s public call to prayer from the minaret is not a normal undertaking here; it would seem strange and to some, provocative. Just as the Muslim’s call of “Allah U Akbar” sometimes invoke fear among many who do not understand its significance to a Muslim, or the use of the word “jihad.” The use of the Arabic language in daily discourse has always seemed to mystify many. Muslim dietary laws, in certain quarters, are sometimes looked upon as being “fussy.” Fasting during the month of Ramadan has gradually been accepted p u b l i c l y.

L.A. Watts Times

(The Honorable Elijah Muhammad had designated December as “the month of Ramadan” in the Nation for some very practical reasons, but that seemed heretic to followers of Orthodox Islam). Another example: employers genuinely found it an inconvenience to allow the “interruption” for Muslim employees to take time off to pray during work hours. (Muslims pray five times a day – that is one of the principles of Islam). Also, whereas it is normal in Muslim societies to gather on Friday at noon for the Jumah prayer, it is unthinkable as a regular Friday “interruption” in the average work place. One of the legacies of the Nation is that throughout the latter half of the 20th century, many Americans, especially Black Americans, began to shy away from European names focusing instead on African, African-sounding, Muslim and non-European names. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad referred to European and Christian names as slave names, the legacy that were relegated to Black Americans by their former slave masters. Instead of John, James, Peter, Jean and Joan, parents began giving their children names such as Abdul, Rahman, Kwame, Kenyatta, Jamillah and Rasheeda. In addition, many persons who were not born with those names legally changed them once they became adults. The name changing and the designation of “X” instead of the European surname was one of creation of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad that was totally foreign to other Muslims. To him, it was an extension of what ailed Black people in America, a rejection of Euro-centric values and an acceptance of Afro-centric values, not only in America but also throughout the Western Hemisphere. By 1975, when the Honorable Elijah Muhammad departed, Minister Louis Farrakhan had been his national spokesman, and Minister Wallace Muhammad, his (Elijah Muhammad’s) son, became the leader of the Nation. Then Minister Muhammad directed the Nation toward Orthodox Islam; ministers in the Nation became Imams; mosques were called masjids; the Muhammad Speaks newspaper became the Bilalian News and eventually evolved to today’s Muslim Journal; and Minister Wallace Muhammad became Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. Minister Farrakhan began to rebuild the Nation according to the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. (These events prompted Dr. Lincoln to describe then Minister Muhammad as a small fish in a big pond; and Minister Farrakhan as a big fish in a little pond). Minister Farrakhan started the Final Call newspaper; restarted the Nation’s annual Saviour’s Day on February 26th; called the Million Man March in October 1995 in Washington D.C.; and then went on the first of several Goodwill Tours to connect with African and Asian countries. He also established several Nation of Islam mosques outside of the United States including Ghana, England and the Caribbean. The relationship between followers of Orthodox Islam and the Nation has grown closer over the years, particularly between followers of Imam Mohammed and the Nation. As expected in the realm of human interaction, there were some differences, but differences or disagreements were always handled through dialogue and civil discourse. Muslims, like anyone else, would disagree without becoming disagreeable. The events of Sept. 11, 2001 had a profound negative effect on the relationship between Christians and Muslims in the United States. Then when the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma occurred, Muslims were the first to be blamed. It turned out to be a young American with a European-sounding name; no one ever mentioned what religion he was. President George W. Bush invaded a Muslim country in 2003 ostensibly looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction – that were never found – killed thousands of civilians and occupied the country for six years until he left office on January 2009. So-called non-combat troops are still there. The recent set of events mentioned in the previous paragraph has a direct bearing on Muslims. It has created a suspicion among many Muslims that Islam is the target of America’s wrath against those who conspired with the 9/11 terrorists. When candidate Barack Obama was running for the presidency, false rumors of him being a Muslim dogged his campaign – and it is still in effect. (Many believe that may have helped to create the Tea Party). It prompted General Colin Powell to say, on national television, that if candidate Obama was in fact a

Muslim, that would not preclude him from running for president. Fast forward to the events of the present, and the chasm between Christians and Muslims in America seems to have widened. Though religious and political scholars state that America is a Judeo-Christian nation, Muslims do occupy positions throughout every strata of American society, and the U.S. Constitution does guarantee religious freedom. Mutual discourse and dialogue have been replaced by hostile debates and adversarial confrontations by some, on the meaning of Islam and the acceptance of Muslims to practice their religion like everyone else. The proposed building of the Islamic center near Ground Zero and the threat of burning the Quran on the anniversary of 9/11 are just two of the incidents that appear to fuel extremism on both sides of the issues. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf who is spearheading the building of the Islamic Center near Ground Zero was very definitive of the reasons, his intent and the goodwill that the project would generate over the long period. But moreso, it is significant to note that Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania recently spoke about a little-known aspect of the 9/11 tragedy: how Muslim workers at Windows-of-the-World, the restaurant atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center, would use a stairwell between the 106th and 107th floors for their daily prayers. The closest mosque was more than 100 floors down and four blocks away, so that impromptu prayer space had to do, he said. Standing before an assemblage of imams, rabbis, ministers, bishops, and other religious leaders, Rendell warned, “Throughout this country, there are clear signs of anti-Muslim feeling. There are people who seek to advance their own agenda by doing this.” A recent headline from the Amsterdam News, relative to the national discourse on Islam, stated “Islam and Race: Black Muslims Left Out of National Conversation on Islam.” The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan supports the building of the Islamic center near Ground Zero. At a news conference, he said, “Why should a mosque, a cultural center, not be constructed a few blocks away (from Ground Zero)?”

FOOTNOTE: A few years ago, Time magazine commissioned Professor Hart a historian to look down through the annuls of history and compile a list of 100 men and women who life and work impacted and redirected the course of human progress; it became known as Hart’s100Supermen of History. Number one on Professor Hart’s list was Prophet Muhammad.

Minarets (as seen to the right) are distinctive architectural features of Islamic mosques - generally tall spires with onionshaped or conical crowns. They provide a visual focal point and are used for the call to prayer.

Broncos’ McKinley Found Dead in Home ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — For the third time in four years, the Denver Broncos are dealing with the death of a teammate. Wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his home Monday in an apparent suicide. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said authorities were called to McKinley’s home in Centennial at 3:35 p.m. local time and found McKinley's body in the second-floor master bedroom. He said detectives believe McKinley, 23, was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Robinson said authorities were called by a female friend of McKinley’s who discovered the body after returning from an errand with his child. The sheriff declined to say if authorities found a suicide note. “It’s still part of our investigation and probably nothing we’ll talk about right now, he said. McKinley was on injured reserve after hurting his left knee in August for the second time in eight months. He was known for his

college coach, Steve Spurrier. “Had a wonderful smile just like he always did, Spurrier remembered. The news of McKinley’s death spread quickly at the end of South Carolina’s practice Monday. Players who normally sprint off the field upbeat walked slowly with their heads down. “Kenny was certainly one of my all-time favorite players. It’s hard to figure out why it happened like this, Spurrier said. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said in a statement: “Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room. This is a tragic loss for our football team, and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. McDaniels planned to meet with the media on Tuesday, the players’ day off. They’ll reconvene Wednesday to resume preparations for their game against Indianapolis at Invesco Field on Sunday. McKinley was a second-year pro who played in eight games as a rookie in 2009 with seven kick returns for 158 yards before going

on injured reserve with a left knee injury on Dec. 29, two days after he was hurt in a game at Philadelphia. He recovered and participated in the team’s offseason workouts but got hurt again during the first week of training camp and was placed on IR on Aug. 5. Several Broncos players were attending a fundraiser Monday night in honor of Williams but declined to comment on McKinley’s death. Cornerback Champ Bailey and former NFL star John Lynch headlined the wine-tasting VIP event to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver, home of the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center. The Broncos hustled out of their Dove Valley practice facilities Monday night, many of them headed to the charity event unaware of the latest tragedy to befall the franchise. Several said as they left the event that they weren’t ready to talk about McKinley’s death. Despite Bush’s exit, Drew Brees helped the Super Bowl champions win in its 25-22 victory over Mike Singletary’s 49ers. Some feel that the Heisman Trophy Trust should give Bush’s former trophy to Texas quarterback Vince Young, who, roughly five years ago, was second in the official balloting for the Heisman. I think Young should have gotten the trophy. But it won’t happen, unfortunately. No one will get the trophy. Three black NFL head coaches are 2-0 after the second week of the season. They’re the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raheem Morris, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin and the Chicago Bears’ Lovie Smith. NFL coaches weren’t the only ones who made headlines recently. Black players did too. The Philadelphia Eagles’ Michael Vick made the news as he passed for two TDs to help the Eagles beat the Detroit Lions, 3532. Quarterbacks Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch worked together to put the 2-0 Steelers in the win column against the Tennessee Titans, who were beat, 19-11. USC veteran Allen Bradford, Marc Tyler and C.J. Gable brought back the days when the university was called “Tailback U in the Trojans’ 3221 victory over the Big 10’s Minnesota Gophers on the road. Beverly Hills High School defensive star Greg Townsend Jr. is one of the most-wanted players in the nation. His father, Greg Townsend Sr., played for the Raiders. University of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson jumped into the 2010 Heisman Trophy race with his sparkling play in his first two games of the season, including that 2824 win over Notre Dame. USA Today reports that the sophomore “broken and re-broken records.â€? “He’s averaged 227.5 rushing yards through two games, making him the Bowl Subdivision leader — and yes, he’s ahead of the nation’s top running back, Oklahoma State’s Kendall Hunter who averages 207.0,â€? USA Today’s Nicole Auerbach writes. The newspaper also quotes Florida coach Urban Meyer as saying, “Oh, I think he is the best player in the country right now, or one of them.â€? And the beat continues‌ Tiger Woods isn’t one of the 30 players who made it to the FedEx Cup, but he will be in action from Oct. 1 to 3 at the Ryder Cup. Woods hasn’t won a tournament in 2010. Woods and his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, will share the parenting of their two children, daughter Sam, 3, and 1-year-old son Charlie. NEW YORK — Taraji P. Henson agrees that minorities were not represented enough at the Emmys — and there are too few working in Hollywood. Henson says “there were several times when I didn’t even want to watch the Emmys because I mean, who am I looking at?” Henson made the comments when asked on her thoughts about fellow actress Regina King’s Sept. 3 blog post for the Huffington Post. In it, the black actress criticizes the Emmys for under-representing minorities in its main categories. King also writes that she was offended after a member of the media confused her with actress Rutina Wesley of HBO’s “True Blood.” And she says she was hurt that late actress Alaine Reed Hall, best known for her role on “Sesame Street,” was not among those recognized at this year’s Emmys. Hall and King starred together on the 1980s show “227.” “I mean, she has a point,” Henson said of King’s blog post. In the same interview, actor Terrence Howard says that Hollywood is changing, for the better.

“The truth is, the country still has a lot more growth it needs to make and in due time, I’m sure none of those questions will even be relevant anymore,” Howard said, adding: “The whole country seems to have started toward a trend of equality and brotherhood.” Henson interjected: “Hollywood hasn’t.” “Hollywood just has to catch up,” he responded. “Give them some time.” Henson and Howard starred together in 2005’s “Hustle & Flow,” which earned Howard an Oscar nomination for best actor. Henson was nominated for best supporting actress last year for her role in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” The pair will return this year as hosts of the Soul Train Music Awards. The special marks its second year back since taking a fiveyear hiatus. It airs on Centric and BET on Nov. 28.

Triumphant Truth BY ELDER JASON MALVEAUX, BETHESDA TEMPLE CHURCH Scripture: John 8:32 Humanity seems to have love/hate relationship with the truth — as it should be. Facing the truth is daunting yet inviting, overwhelming yet necessary, especially when the object being observed in the light of truth is self. It is liberating to the soul to speak the truth as you see it. Often, though at times hurtful, hearing the truth enlightens and brings a sense of elevated consciousness. The power of truth ultimately liberates. From the Old Testament to the New, the idea of truth grew from being able to sincerely tell what you experienced to being able to draw conclusions based on the objective observation of facts. On objectivity, CS Lewis comments, “The scholar has lived in many times and is therefore in some degree immune from the great cataract of nonsense that pours from the press and the microphone of his own age.” It is the ability to see above and beyond the circumstances of the here and now to discover, as Dr. Maya Angelo points out, why and how we got here that gives us the intellectual muscle to shatter the cycle of past error, temper “the press and microphone” of our present, and establish a path to a future that is reasoned – that is freeing. However, it is not freedom. Truth can only be sourced from one whose ability to know and interpret an unlimited number of facts is unlimited. That is God. If truth is to be beneficial to us, God must also be willing to share truth. That is Jesus. When truth, especially divine truth, comes into our experience there is a burden to bear and a blessing to bestow. The burden of truth demands honest evaluation, application, and dedication. When we are confronted with truth, especially divine truth, it registers within. Beyond reason, we are assured of its accuracy and application to our souls. It is no wonder that the story of the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus has resonated with people through the centuries. It is truth. It is divine truth. When such conviction falls upon us, we bear a responsibility, a burden, to respond to it. Truth necessitates application. Truth known, for knowledge sake, is useless. It is only when

the conviction of the Holy Spirit is allowed to manifest as a change of thought pattern and lifestyle that truth’s power is realized. Dedication to truth drives conviction into the soul, making what

Jason Malveaux could have been a short-lived response, a lifetime experience. We are to learn how to apply God’s truth to our lives and look for ways to bring into alignment to truth we know and the choices we make day by day. The blessing of truth is to have your mind transformed into the image of our Lord Jesus Christ. For example, our social, spiritual, and financial outlooks are often conformed by news reports. CS Lewis called this, “A great cataract of nonsense.” Effectively, conformity places thick scales over your outlook, causing it to be clouded nonsense compared to the man or woman whose mind has been enlightened by Christ. Though one may find similar satisfaction in the study of history or travel, such perspectives pale by comparison to the transformative influence of the Holy Spirit on anyone willing to “take up his cross and follow” Jesus. I’ve heard it said, “When you know better, you can do better.” Such is the burden and blessing of truth. To know better, meaning to find out if there is a better way, and when you find it make choices that are consistent with the better knowledge you have attained. Therein lays the key to true liberty. To be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ, to make decisions as He would, to love as He could, to live above the fray of noise having your will primarily influenced by Christ alone, that is free.

PERSON Of The Week

‘Baby Billionaire’ Encourages Giving Back to Community BY SURITIA TAYLOR SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE DISTRICT CHRONICLES WASHINGTON (NNPA) — Ionnie McNeill has never been the type that needed to be in the spotlight or one to indulge in glamorous things like many of her Howard University classmates. Her mantra has always been minimalism, an attitude that she doesn’t need everything. In fact, she doesn’t even Facebook or tweet. This 21-year-old Howard graduate isn’t on anyone’s list of millionaires, but she is a savvy investor who has been in the stock market since she was 8 years old. Even with the near collapse of the market last year, McNeill reveals that her net worth is “currently enough for her to retire with over $5 million without saving another dime,” that is with the assumption that she maintains a 13 percent annual rate of return on her present investment. Some of McNeill’s wealth is made up of income from her stock portfolio of companies such as Pfizer, The Home Depot, CVS, Wendy’s, Caterpillar, Limited Brands and Kellogg’s. As a result of her early exposure to investing, she started a company called Speak 2 Share Inc. at age 15. S2S, as it is often referred to as, is a professional speaking organization that conducts speeches, presentations, and workshops for kids and young adults about investing. In fact, in June, she was a key panelist at the Kidult Youth Leadership Conference in New York City, an event sponsored by popular rapper/producer Pharrell Williams for youth ages 14 to 21. Also, in November 2008, while still a junior at Howard University, McNeill was a featured speaker at Essence Young Women’s Leadership Conference where she addressed more than 1,500 women. “Speaking at Essence put me on another level,” she said. “Since then, I have gotten more attention. Now people refer to me as ‘The Baby Billionaire.’ ” While at Monsignor Edward Pace High School, McNeill was featured in the July 2003 issue of Black Enterprise magazine, in an article entitled, “And the Children Will Teach.” “I was honored because Black Enterprise is revered by the Black population,” she said proudly. McNeill grew up with both parents and an older sister, Danelle, 33, in the Miami and West Palm Beach area of Florida. Her mother, Ann McNeill, owns MCO Construction and Services Co., a multimillion-dollar minority-owned business. Her father, Daniel, is a purchasing manager with United Technologies. In addition to her dad teaching

Ionnie McNeill

her the value of frugality and the importance of supporting Blackowned businesses, it was her mother who prepared McNeill for the world of investing and entrepreneurship. Ann McNeill started taking her daughter to investment meetings at the age of 7 and relied on McNeill to understand what was being taught. “I was exposed to investing so early on that I couldn’t really say whether I liked or didn’t like it,” McNeill said. “I didn’t know what I liked yet.” But McNeill quickly picked up tips from the investment meetings. “We learned together; I picked everything up fast, and sometimes I even did the homework for my mom,” she said. McNeill made her first investment into Citrix Systems. In the ’90s, Citrix Systems had a strong partnership with Microsoft. “My investment club took a field trip and met with the CFO and other executives and they seemed to have a profitable strategic plan,” she recalls. “At the time I chose Citrix because I was able to meet the executive team and they had a partnership with Microsoft. This was before the courts claimed Microsoft to be a monopoly on the market and consequently broke the company up.” Interestingly enough, McNeill’s first investment was a sinker. Even though she advised her mother to buy it for her when it was in the $40 range, her mother didn’t end up investing in it until it was close to $100. By then it was too late. After reaching a high of $127, Citrix soon fell down to the $20s within the same year. Needless to say, after that, McNeill began to purchase her own stock and started with companies

that most people are familiar with. McNeill prefers to invest in companies that she patronizes. These days, she realizes the importance of spreading her knowledge to the African-American community through S2S. “We put our money into these corporations that don’t put anything back into the Black community,” she said. Though she hasn’t yet begun to invest in a Black corporation, she is adamant about teaching people about the value of investing in general and being a conscious customer and supporting Black businesses. “We should be shopping at stores like Sankofa and Everlasting Life,” she adds, referring to the food and retail stores adjacent to Howard University. “These businesses all reinvest in the Black community; some even help to fund Howard’s programs. Do we know McDonald’s to do that? Yet, some of us eat there every day. Don’t just be a consumer, be a shareowner.” Having graduated last year from a rigorous accounting program, magna cum laude, McNeill plans to stay for a fifth year at Howard to get her master’s degree in accounting. She could have gone to many other graduate schools, but has decided to stay in the district and return to Howard in order to give back to the school. She wants to help Roberta McCleod, the director of the Blackburn Center, with planning for workshops, seminars, and activities geared toward financial literacy and empowerment for the students. For now, she plans to travel and visit friends and “take a breather” before beginning her graduate career.

Haiti: Accounting for the Money BY NICOLE C. LEE, ESQUIRE NNPA COLUMNIST President Obama showed positive leadership after the catastrophe in Haiti by pledging the resources of the U.S. government to our neighbor in need. Yet, eight months after the quake, many of the country’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) remain without f o o d , w a t e r, sanitation and s h e l t e r . Additionally, ci v i l s o c ie ty and local nongovernmental organizations in Haiti report that many international NGOs responsible for policy and programs have been less proactive and seldom prioritize working directly with Haitians. Following the Jan. 12 quake, the world stepped up. Millions of dollars were raised and billions pledged to rebuild Haiti. I am sad to report that, according to the United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for Haiti, debt relief outstanding, as of August 2010, the United States had disbursed none of its pledged $898.4 million from the March 2010 Haiti donors conference. Unfortunately, the United States is not alone in its inaction. Excluding debt relief, the top 22 donors pledged $2.6 billion just for fiscal year 2010 alone, yet by August only 20 percent of this ($538.3 million) has been disbursed. Distrust and racism has led to historic under-funding of the government of Haiti. By August, only $144.9 million of $538.3 million pledged had gone to the government of Haiti. It is a positive step, despite the low numbers pledged in total. Unlike other instances where direct funding to the government of Haiti has been nearly nonexistent, this change can hope-

fully build capacity and infrastructure and prevent future catastrophes. Support of the government is important. But, with less than 0.33

Nicole Lee percent of pledges in humanitarian aid being spent, we see a deep disconnect. Haiti advocates are deeply concerned that without immediate investigation, strong oversight and accountability of funds, both private and public failures may further the impact of the devastating quake. My frequent visits, and receipt of daily reports from partners, remind me that the emergency phase is not over. While reconstruction and rebuilding must move forward, conditions on the ground remain appalling. The majority of those affected by the earthquake are living in the same conditions they did in January. People’s ability to access basic goods — including safe and secure housing, food, water, sanitation and health care — remains extremely limited. With little to no income over the last eight months, those affected by the quake are forced to take drastic measures to provide any-

thing for their families. Also, an increasing number of threats and incidents of genderbased violence are being rec o r d e d . T h e situation on the ground requires immediate action to remedy the precarious situation of people today. Questions should be raised for USAID, NGO partners, and contractors who have been granted millions of dollars with questionable results. It is imperative that the U.S. government hold USAID, and their partner organizations, accountable for the money spent as well as outstanding commitments. In addition, the standards being set for acceptable minimums are offensive and inadequate. For example, the U.N. Shelter Cluster has reported that 100 percent of the country’s shelter needs have been met. To the U.N., this has meant one to two tarps and a couple of sticks in a tropical country during the hurricane season. If this is considered 100 percent shelter coverage, then we must ask: What are the standards for the response in Haiti? There needs to be a serious investigation by independent parties of on-the-ground activities of large NGOs and the amount of money given to these organizations. Many of the NGOs that received money are people who are trained as professional first responders. It is worrisome that experts in emergency relief work are now weighing the importance of longterm development assistance. Relief work operates under the guise of immediate action, much different than development work, which includes long-term planning and consultation. Nicole C. Lee is the president of TransAfrica.

An African Identity BY BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS JR. Black people all over the world have a rich and diverse historic legacy and a future that is full of promise, opportunity and prosperity if we continue our struggle for true freedom, justice and equality without engaging in self-denial, selfdestruction, disunity or any form of mis-education. For centuries, there have been systematic and ruthless attempts to deny African people the fundamental human right of self-determination and selfidentity. The “Black Consciousness Movement” in Africa, the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, South America, and throughout the Pan-African world was successful in countering the false stereotypes, negative images, and prejudices that for centuries attempted to lay a pseudointellectual justification for slavery, economic exploitation, and subjugation of hundreds of millions of African people throughout the world. It is, therefore, unfortunate today that there are some among us who are ashamed of their African heritage and identity, who are ashamed of their blackness and their African roots. Of course everyone is entitled to freedom of their own individual self-expression. The point is that when the socalled Tea Party and others from the far right fringe social element in the United States present negative caricatures of President Barack Obama from a racial and ethnic perspective, the African-American community must address in an open forum the suggestion that there is something wrong or politically incorrect concerning our African heritage. How is it even possible that, while we are witnessing the first African American serve as U.S. president, some well-known African Americans would be willing to state they were born in America but have no connection to Africa? The issue is white supremacy often has the victims of that ideology apologizing for or avoiding the positive assertion that we are an African people. Years ago, Carter G. Woodson warned about the “mis-education” of the Negro and the tendency to engage in rhetoric and actions that deny our heritage and actual history in the evolution of humanity. Yes, there are real social, economic, political, religious, and cultural challenges facing African Americans in 2010. Yes, we all need to hold each other more accountable for the state and plight of the majority of

African Americans who are still struggling to improve the overall quality of life in our communities. But no, this is not the time for brothers and sisters in our communities to turn against one another, especially over some false notion that we are without a race, an ethnicity, a culture, a heritage and a proud history that we must convey from one generation to the next. The struggle for freedom, justice and equality transcends race and

Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. racial prejudice. But as brother Malcolm had to remind us: selfhatred and self-denial are serious impediments to advancing the cause and purpose of our liberation as a people. I attended the 2010 White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the 2010 Annual Legislative Week of the Congressional Black Caucus. Both events were brilliant examples of both the progress that we have made as a people in America and the challenges that lie ahead. It was good to see so many young African Americans eager and hungry to learn more about the history and contemporary dynamics of our struggle for empowerment. W.E.B. DuBois, Frantz Fanon, Marcus Garvey, Patrice Lumumba, Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of other freedom fighters want us to stay focused, and not lose that which we have earned. We have come a long way, but we still have a long ways to go. Let’s collectively look into the mirror of history and not to be ashamed but inspired to press forward with the purpose of freedom and equality for all. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. is a national civil rights leader and senior adviser to the Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) and president of the Education Online Services Corp.

William Mervine was coming to recapture the Pueblo de Los Angeles. Though the Marines were better equipped and outnumbered the Californios, the battle was not a route for the invading Americans. Capt. Jose Antonio Carrillo, with only 50 Californio Lancers under his command, managed to route the invading U.S. Marines by running horses throughout the dusty Dominguez hills. The dust impeded visibility for the American forces, giving the Californios time to fire and move their only small cannon

throughout various parts of the battlefield. Due to this strategy, the Marines retreated back to their ships berthed in the San Pedro Bay believing they were up against a superior force. The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum invites people to experience this moment in California history. This year marks the 163rd Anniversary of the battle. Admission is free. Farrakhan Endorsement Young, Gifted Makes Ground Zero and Poor Mosque Backers Squirm BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST

BY EARL OFARI HUTCHINSON Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is one of the latest to weigh in on the great debate on the Islamic center near Ground Zero. Predictably, Farrakhan gave fulsome backing to building the center at the controversial spot. But Farrakhan took it a step further and just as predictably gave it a racial spin. He said that there are a lot of blacks who are Muslims, and some of them were killed in the 9/11 terror attacks. Farrakhan, race, and controversy: the three go hand in hand. That’s always enough to make folk squirm. The question is how just much has Farrakhan’s recent public tout of the center make some of its fervent backers squirm? Probably not a lot since the battle lines on the mosque are pretty firmly drawn. You’re either for it on religious

freedom, tolerance or constitutional grounds, or you’re against it based on grounds that it’s a desecration of

“In this midterm political season that shapes up to be the most hard-fought one in decades, the issue of the Islamic center is one of the most inflammatory.” hallowed soil, is insensitive, or is a deliberate provocation. Polls show that the overwhelm-

Earl Ofari Hutchinson

ing majority of Americans oppose it for one or all of the reasons cited. The center is a religious and political minefield. It was inevitable that Farrakhan would plunge into it. He has that right. But Farrakhan is instant controversy, and even more instant racial polarization. That was never more evident than during the 2008 presidential campaign. Days after then Democratic presidential contender Obama announced his candidacy, Farrakhan praised and virtually endorsed him in a speech at the Nation of Islam’s annual Savior's Day confab in Chicago. A horrified Team Obama promptly issued this statement: “Senator Obama has been clear in his objections to Minister Farrakhan’s past pronouncements and has not solicited the minister’s support.” That didn’t satisfy his primary foe Hillary Clinton. She publicly demanded that he forcefully reject Farrakhan’s endorsement. Obama did. But even then he carefully avoided mentioning Farrakhan by name. It was just too hot. Obama recognized one compelling fact about Farrakhan: He may be a controversial and muchvilified figure, but he is not a fringe figure within black communities. He is still cheered and admired by thousands of blacks. They are also voters too and most embraced Obama with almost messianic zeal. Supporters of the center can now count Farrakhan among their ranks. In this midterm political season that shapes up to be the most hard-fought one in decades, the issue of the Islamic center is one of the most inflammatory. It pricks, inflames and punches just about every person’s hot button. It wouldn’t be a surprise if some right-wingers that froth at building the site near Ground Zero throw up Farrakhan’s name as see-Itold-you-so proof that the center is a closet jihadist conspiracy against the United States. That’s enough to make some squirm. Earl Ofari Hutchinson is a political analyst and author of “How Obama Governed,” among other works. The 2009 poverty numbers were released recently, and things are a lot worse than many economists thought they would be. The poverty rate jumped up a full percentage point, from 13.2 to 14.3 percent. This means that one in seven Americans live in poverty, 4 million more than a year ago. This is the third year the level of poverty and the number of poor Americans has risen. The poverty rate among African Americans also rose, from 24.7 percent to 25.8 percent. The rate for Hispanics rose from 23.2 percent to 25.1 percent. African Americans have the highest poverty rate of any racial ethnic group. In contrast, the rate for nonHispanic whites is 9.4 percent, less than half the rate for African Americans. These data are bad enough, but New York University economist Max Wolff says the data behind the data are even worse. The younger you are in America, says Dr. Wolff, the more likely you are to live in poverty. So while 1 in 7 Americans is poor, being young raises the poverty rate to 1 in 4. While 1 in 4 African Americans is poor, being young raises the African-American poverty rate to 1 in 2.5. Some think that young people will lessen their chances of being in poverty as they age, but early poverty experiences are likely to influence future opportunity. When young people lived with non-relatives, two-thirds of them lived in poverty. This is ominous data for the hundreds of thousands of foster children in our country. In disaggregating the data that were released, Wolff showed the extreme vulnerability that urban youth experienced, especially those that drop out of high school. Again, these young people are disproportionately African American. The health insurance data are no more promising: 50.7 million Americans, 16.7 percent of the population, do not have health insurance coverage. This data make it clear why it was so important for President Obama to push hard for national health care. More than 15 percent of whites lack health insurance coverage, compared to 21 percent of African Americans and 32 percent of Hispanics. The percentage of those without health coverage is undoubtedly tied to the percentage of those who are jobless or who have cobbled together part-time jobs without benefits. Another aspect of this poverty data is the rising number of people who are simply hungry in our nation, people, especially children, who do

Julianne Malveaux not have enough to eat. Policy makers were expected to go to New York to speak of world poverty, which is an important and challenging issue. At the same time, some attention must be paid to the poverty and hunger that exist right here in the United States. Obama has pledged to end hunger in our country by 2015, but child nutrition legislation (HR 5504), which needs reauthorization, languishes in Congress. At the same time, as more people need food stamps, food stamp benefits were cut so that budgets could be balanced. While my work focuses on the economic status of African Americans — and I have been particularly concerned about the growth of poverty in African-American communities — the fact is that poverty has a most diverse face in this nation. Eighteen million of our nation’s poor are nonHispanic whites; nearly 10 million are African American, more than 12 million are Hispanic and 1.7 million are Asian. There is a Rainbow Coalition of poor people in this country, enough to spark a Poor People’s Campaign like the one Martin Luther King Jr. planned in 1968. What would happen if the nation’s poor united to talk about the economic restructuring that is badly needed in this country? The new poverty doesn’t only exist in inner cities. Some of the new poor are in suburbs, wide-eyed and frightened to be in an economic predicament they never would have expected to find themselves in. Poverty is at a disturbing high in our nation — it is higher than it was in 1960. Its reach is wide, and not a single population has been exempted. Still, I am especially sympathetic to those who are young, gifted and poor. What will their lives look like in the future, if they are shackled with poverty now? Julianne Malveaux is president of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C.

Getting All Children the Schools They Deserve BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN NNPA COLUMNIST As a new academic year starts, children around the country are going back to school and settling into new classes. Meanwhile, parents, educators, policy experts, and politicians are gearing up again to monitor and measure student learning—and preparing to ask the hard questions about whether or not the children in their care are getting the best possible education. Hard questions sometimes elicit hard answers, and often it is the students themselves who know the answers better than the adults in charge. But we seldom ask the students, and when they do speak up, we rarely pay attention to what they have to say. Last spring, Justin Hudson, a student who knows the questions and answers well, spoke up about equity in education. We all need to listen to Justin’s words. Justin was a senior at Hunter College High School in New York City, and he had been chosen to deliver the graduation speech for his class. Hunter is a public school for grades 7-12 that has a national reputation for excellence and sends a quarter of its graduates on to Ivy League schools — a figure many private schools would envy. But Hunter’s students don’t resemble the student body at most of the city’s other public schools. They are considered intellectually gifted based on the results of an admission test written by the school’s teachers, and, as the New York Times recently noted, there are very few minority students at Hunter: while Hunter’s entering seventh grade class last year was 3 percent Black and 1 percent Hispanic, 70 percent of the students in the public school system as a whole are Black and Hispanic. Justin, who is Black and Hispanic himself, chose to address this obvious disparity in his speech—and this eighteen-year-old’s observations eloquently sum up one of the most urgent debates in education today. Justin told the audience that as he stood at the podium reflecting on the stellar education he had received over the last six years, “More than anything else, today I feel guilty. I feel guilty because I don’t deserve any of this. And neither do any of you. We received an outstanding education at no charge based solely on our performance on a test we took when we were eleven-year-

Marian Wright Edelman

olds ... We received superior teachers and additional resources based on our status as ‘gifted,’ while kids who naturally needed those resources much more than us wallowed in the mire of a broken system. And now, we stand on the precipice of our lives, in control of our lives, based purely and simply on luck and circumstance. If you truly believe that the demographics of Hunter represent the distribution of intelligence in this city, then you must believe that the Upper West Side, Bayside and Flushing are intrinsically more intelligent than the South Bronx, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Washington Heights, and I refuse to accept that.” Justin continued, “It is certainly not Hunter’s fault that socioeconomic factors inhibit the educational opportunities of some children from birth, and in some ways I forgive colleges and universities that are forced to review eighteen-yearolds, the end results of a broken system. But we are talking about eleven-year-olds. Four-year-olds. We are deciding children’s fates before they even had a chance. We are playing God, and we are losing. Kids are losing the opportunity to go to college or obtain a career, because no one taught them long division or colors. Hunter is perpetuating a system in which children, who contain unbridled and untapped intellect and creativity, are discard-

ed like refuse. And we have the audacity to say they deserved it, because we’re smarter than them ... I apologize if this is not the speech you wanted to hear ... I apologize if I have not inspired you, or uplifted you, but we have failed to inspire and uplift an entire generation of children.” Justin then explained that he didn’t mean his speech to be a moral lecture to his classmates because he understood that he had benefited from the current system just like everyone else in the room — but he now wanted to turn the guilt he felt for having being blessed with such tremendous opportunities into determination to help bring the same kinds of opportunities to other children, and he hoped others would join him. He said, “I do not know the capacity in which I will be able to make this world a better and more just place, but I strongly believe that education is the most effective means of creating social improvement, which is precisely why this is a battle we cannot concede ... I hope that in the near future, education itself will not be a privilege for the few in this world (and) I hope that a quality education will not be a privilege for the few in this country.” Making sure that a quality education is available to every child in our country — and is not just a privilege for a few — is indeed one of the great battles of our time. It is the unfinished business of the Civil Rights Movement and the task that will help determine America’s place on the global stage in a rapidly changing world. I am so grateful that a bright young leader like Justin is already sensitive enough to recognize that every child deserves an education like his and brave enough to speak out and join the fight to make that happen. We all need to pay attention to Justin’s words of wisdom. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children’s Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. October 2nd One Nation Rally: Demand the Change We Voted For BY MARC H. MORIAL PRESIDENT AND CEO NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE NNPA COLUMNIST On Oct. 2, the National Urban League will join a coalition of more than 150 progressive organizations and tens of thousands of Americans at a national rally for jobs, education, and social justice at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The goal of the One Nation Working Together (ONWT) rally is to galvanize Americans of every race, religion, and walk of life to demand swift action that will put America back to work and pull America back together. I will be a featured speaker along with a number of other human rights, civil rights, union, and progressive thought leaders. Seven weeks before the mid-term elections, the American people are in a restless mood and rightfully so. The latest employment report shows that the economy lost another 54,000 jobs last month. Overall unemployment has climbed to 9.6 percent, with African American unemployment rising to 16.3 percent and Latino joblessness now at 12 percent. While much of this is the result of the persistent great recession, which began in 2007. Unfortunately, there is a faction in the Congress that has repeatedly refused to pass job creation legislation, which could alleviate the suffering of millions of middle class and working Americans. In addition to the economic woes, the nation is also experiencing deep social divisions, fanned by hateful anti-Muslim sentiment, selfserving Tea Party vitriol and constant cable news and conservative talk show bluster. The prospects for our young people are especially bleak, with a staggeringly high 45 percent unemployment rate for African American teens, a million students dropping out of school each year and recent college grads finding it more difficult than ever to land that first job.

Clearly, this confluence of crises calls for a unity of purpose and action that has defined the American experience through most of the past 234 years, but which has been sorely lacking in recent times. The One Nation rally is intended to rekindle that spirit and to demand the change we voted for in 2008. Millions of Americans want to know — if we can bailout big banks

Marc Morial and investment firms on Wall Street, why can’t we bring good jobs to Main Street? Are we a nation that believes in shared prosperity for all who are willing to work for it, or are we a nation that favors only the privileged few? The American people want to know — if education is the gateway to prosperity and a life of meaning, why are so many of our schools failing so many of our children? And do we believe in the religious pluralism and freedom that first brought our founders to these shores, or will we remain silent in the face of faith-based bigotry? These are some of the issues that have defined the National Urban League movement for the past 100 years. The Oct. 2 rally at the Lincoln Memorial will give the majority of us who believe we must be One Nation again the chance to make our voices heard. I hope you will join us. To find out more about the rally log on to www.onenationworkingtogether.org.
