ARIES ~ Work. You like work. You have faith in the results it produces. Luck is important, but getting the job in front of you done to the best of your ability will put you ahead of the game this week. Work at love, or rather work for those you love. TAURUS ~ Don’t ask yourself when the answer will come. It is on its way, but it will not get here this week. Yield not to frustrations. Don’t fly off the handle and create problems for yourself later on. Chill. Time will provide the best medicine for anything that ails you this week. GEMINI ~ This week is excellent for being still and letting the wealth inside yourself produce emotional dividends. Get in touch with the forces that work behind the scenes that produce the bright facades that everyone enjoys. Take comfort in the fact that you know these forces are eternal. CANCER ~ Did external circumstance allow you to get into your true soul vibration last week? Well, last week was good for getting into a positive way of looking at what is happening. This week you’ll be called upon to express that positive way to the entire world around you. Enjoy being yourself. LEO ~ If you feel blessed this week, don’t be surprised. With last week’s soul vibration you were able to see a wonderful truth about yourself. Did you look? If you did then this week that truth will shine in everything you do. VIRGO ~ You may feel a bit frustrated that some of the miscellaneous items from your “to do” list reappear for this week. Chill. Find ways to exert excess stress positively. Everything you need to get done will be done. You’ve got what it takes! Continue to shine!

LIBRA ~ The sincere emotions that should have flowed through you last week will begin to glow more brightly this week. No matter what the emotions were, you can find the good in them this week. If you have to search deeply, do so. The good is there in abundance this week. SCORPIO ~ Energy is higher than it was last week. You might feel like the sunshine inside yourself provides blinding light. Walk into it. There are no dangers. Put dark glasses on your soul vibrations and be cool. This day is too light, too bright. SAGITTARIUS ~ You might get negative answers to an important question this week so you should have a backup plan. And you should know that in the long run it is better that the answer was not yes. Be daring! Make efforts to move beyond your comfort zone. You’ll be glad you did. CAPRICORN ~ Don’t waste your shine on solitude. Get out and let other people see it this week. The cheerfulness that should have come into your life last week is looking for places to express. Find them. Your winning ways can win big this week. AQUARIUS ~ You like to shine. Everyone might not know it but you like to be a little superficial and playful. That side of your soul vibration is pleading for expression this week. Listen to the plea. Give it a chance but be careful of the sensitive feelings of those who experience you in another way. PISCES ~ Some say optimism is fantasy. Suppose the good thing you’re optimistic about never comes. This week you’ll know that the joy of anticipating it is joy enough. Just the certainty of coming goodness is present goodness. The joy of tomorrow is available this week.

Ed Welburn, GM Global Design Leader A Remarkable Man Doing a Remarkable Job BY CATHERINE KELLY PUBLISHER –THE MICHIGAN CITIZEN & SPECIAL CONTRIBUTING EDITOR TO THE NNPA Innovative design, understanding, and the importance of diversity are guiding philosophies for General Motors Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn. “Exposure. Reading. Travel, whenever possible … and don’t be afraid to take risks,” says Welburn about the preparation for living and working in an increasingly global world. Since 2003, Welburn, 59, is only the sixth design leader in

General Motors’ history and heads what may be the largest design organization in the world. He leads 10 design centers in eight countries and manages 1,500 creative personalities. It’s not uncommon to find Welburn at a 6 a.m. design review or on a late-night conference call — he is, after all, accommodating the world’s time zones. Design is around the clock work at a global company. After the well-publicized news of General Motors’ financial woes, subsequent bailout and new stock offering, the company is maintaining its commitment to design. And

Welburn is leading the effort. Welburn, one of the highestranking Black automobile executives in the world, says much of his inspiration comes from his background. Welburn has loved automobiles since he was a child when his father, a car enthusiast himself, took him to an auto show in Philadelphia. Welburn received his art training from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He attended the historically Black college in the early 1970s and said the “interdisciplinary” aspect of the experience prepared him for his current role that an art school could not have. “Life began to open up quite a bit for me when I went to Howard University. The School of Fine Arts was a fascinating place [to be.] Art, music and drama … with students like Debbie Allen, Roberta Flack, Phylicia Rashad and Donny Hathaway,” said Welburn in an interview with the Black press. He recalls hearing Flack play the piano when he was on his way to class and believes his time at Howard contributed to his creative development. Welburn said studying sculpture at Howard made his drawings much “looser” and him a better designer. “Some of my favorite

In late September, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third In this July 12, 1995 file photo, Mumia AbuJamal, convicted of killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981, leaves a Philadelphia court. The Supreme Court on Jan. 19 threw out a court ruling that invalidated AbuJamal’s death sentence for killing Faulkner. The justices ordered the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia to take another look at Abu-Jamal’s claim that the jury weighing his punishment was given flawed instructions.

Circuit agreed to hear arguments in the case, under a directive from the U.S. Supreme Court to review Jamal’s death sentence for killing Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner. In an e-mail to supporters, Jamal’s defense lawyer Robert Bryan said, “We are cautiously encouraged that the federal court has taken this step.” Abu-Jamal was convicted in a unanimous decision by a majority White jury and sentenced to death. Born Wesley Cook, he has maintained his innocence from death row in a Pennsylvania state prison, submitting appeal requests based on allegations of judicial bias, police brutality, and an inadequate defense during his arrest and trial 28 years ago. At the time of his arrest, AbuJamal was a radio announcer and president of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists. He was known for his outspoken political views and commentary on racial injustice and police brutality. Opponents to Abu-Jamal’s claims of innocence include the Fraternal Order of Police and Maureen Faulkner, the widow of the murdered officer. At a recent screening of the film “Barrel of a Gun,” a documentary about the case, Faulkner’s widow said the movie “will put people’s mind at rest,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Norman B. Brooks Sr., who was one of the first African Americans to have a television show, died Sept. 17. He was 91. Born Oct. 4, 1918, Brooks was also known locally as a singer. Family members had planned to honor and celebrate Brooks’ life Sept. 25 at Guidance Church in Los Angeles.

BY MIKE STOBBE AP MEDICAL WRITER ATLANTA (AP) — A government study found one in five sexually active urban gay and bisexual men is infected with HIV, and nearly half of those infected don't know they have the disease. The study is considered the largest to look at urban gay and bisexual men at high risk for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. More than 8,000 men in 21 U.S. cities were tested and interviewed. The new study echoed earlier research that found men who were black and had lower incomes were the most likely to be infected and to not know it. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the results Sept. 23. The study is being published in a CDC publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Chicago’s Black Leaders Looking at Mayor Hopefuls CHICAGO (AP) — The head of the Chicago City Council's black caucus says a broad coalition that includes clergy, business people and union leaders could team up to support one candidate in the race for mayor. Alderman Walter Burnett says the coalition is being formed to ensure the interests of the black community are taken into account by the next mayor. He says the candidate doesn’t necessarily have to be black. But he or she should be willing to address issues important to the black community, including schools, crime, housing and increasing the amount of city business awarded to minorities. Burnett says the process for interviewing candidates is still being determined, and a firm timeline to pick someone has not yet been set.

Black Farmers Rally on Capitol Hill BY C.K. MORELAND JR. SPECIAL TO THE NNPA WASHINGTON — John Boyd, a fourth generation farmer, wants it to be clear: His effort to secure Congressional funding for a discrimination settlement that Black farmers reached with the U.S. Department of Agriculture is not the pursuit of “reparation.” “It’s (about) discrimination,” John Boyd, the president of the National Black Farmers Association told Fox News. “It’s about justice.

Black farmers have not been getting justice.” Black farmers originally filed a lawsuit against USDA in 1997 and reached a settlement agreement in 1999. Even though thousands filed claims in the settlement, many more were unaware of the deadline. A second deadline was set for September of 2000 but only a small percentage of those farmers filing claims were declared eligible for payment. Now, nearly a decade later, Black farmers are still waiting for

However, the money could have been allocated by Congress by March 31, but it was not. Standing in solidarity beside the Black farmers were members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Rep. Nuggets’ Anthony Focuses on Hoops, Not The Hoopla BY PAT GRAHAM AP SPORTS WRITER DENVER — Carmelo Anthony is focused on hoops, not the hoopla surrounding his future in Denver. Anthony joined his Nuggets teammates on the first day of training camp Tuesday, calling the court his “safe haven, a place where he doesn’t have to “deal with all the other stuff. For now, Anthony remains a member of the Nuggets after a person with knowledge of the discussions said a four-way deal that would have sent Anthony to New Jersey was “dead. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the trade. Still, Anthony’s days in Denver could very well be numbered. Anthony’s powder blue jersey, soaked in sweat after a more than two-hour practice, was proof of an honest day’s work Tuesday. The All-Star forward became almost agitated when asked if he might give anything less than 100 percent considering his uncertainty with the team. “I love the game too much to disrespect the game like that, said Anthony, who averaged 28.2 points last season in leading the Nuggets to their second straight Northwest Division title. “Anytime I step on the court, I’m going to give it my all, regardless of what’s going on, what’s the situation. “This is basketball. I focus on basketball — it’s something I know how to do and I love to do. As far as my effort on the court, nobody can question that. Nuggets coach George Karl gave Anthony an “A for his effort after practice, saying he thought his star was “very professional, very mature. Karl remains hopeful that Anthony will stick around. Anthony has yet to sign off on a three-year, $65 million extension that's been on the table since June,

SPORTS BEAT B Notes, quotes and things picked up on the run from coast-to-coast and all the stops in between and beyond. UCLA and USC came up big winners Saturday. UCLA upset and dominated the highly touted Texas

Chicago Bears’ Lovie Smith and Mike Tomlin’s Steelers, both 3-0. And the beat continues‌ If the Minnesota Twins win the whole thing, outfielder Delmon Young could be a key performer. There was a period of time when

Carmelo Anthony leading the Nuggets to explore trade options. The potential trade involving Denver, New Jersey, Charlotte and Utah hit a road block over the weekend and then withered when a deal wasn’t reached by an imposed deadline of Tuesday. “The perfect storm in my mind is to keep Melo, convince him that this is the best place for him, that this is where he has to win a championship, Karl said. Karl made his return to practice Tuesday after missing the end of last season while undergoing treatment for throat and neck cancer. His voice still raspy, Karl carried around a whistle to get the attention of his players. But he only used it in a joking manner. “It’s fun to be back. It’s fun to get the butterflies, Karl said. “It’s fun to interact with your basketball family. Karl couldn’t chat for long — four minutes at a time tops. With such a veteran team, though, he really didn’t need to do much instructing. “All he has to do is say it once, Anthony said, grinning. “He sounds good, he looks good. Just how much longer Karl might be coaching Anthony remains unclear. The two are hoping to get together for a chat sometime this week. Anthony has one caveat: The conversation must remain on hoops — no sales pitches. “I want to focus on basketball right now, Anthony said. “If he wants to sit and talk to me about what to do tomorrow at practice or the next day, then we can sit down and talk about that. One of the reasons forward Al Harrington signed with Denver over Dallas in July was because of the chance to suit up with Anthony. Even with trade rumors swirling, Harrington, a 13-year veteran, still believes Anthony will stay put. “I’m optimistic, he said. New Nets coach Avery Johnson hasn't gotten caught up in the trade speculation and talk, preferring to go about the task of turning around his

team. “I know that I love our guys, love the guys who are here, Johnson said. “We’re not a distracted team at all. Johnson said first-round draft pick Derrick Favors hasn’t been bothered by the trade talk. Favors was one of the principal players in the Anthony deal. “Favors has been one of our best players so far, Johnson said. “He’s doing a nice job. AP Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney and AP Sports Writer Tom Canavan contributed to this report.

Michael Vick goes by Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney in the 2006 Pro Bowl. These days, Vick is playing well for the Philadelphia Eagles. Longhorns, 34-12. This Saturday, the Bruins will host Washington State at the Rose Bowl. It will be interesting to see if the 2-2 Bruins can roll over the Washington State Cougars like the Trojans did in that big 50-16 win on Sept. 25. USC and UCLA had some explosive players on display Saturday. The Trojans are noted for producing a parade of tailbacks. Also, This year is no exception. In the NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon recently suffered a knee injury and could be out of action for weeks. Starter Big Ben Roethlisberger should be back from his four-game suspension by the time Dixon recovers. It seems that Charlie Batch will continue to help hold down the fort until Big Ben returns. There were those predictors who said the Steelers would be 0-4 when Roethlisberger returns. It didn’t happen. The Steelers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday, 38-13, to remain unbeaten. The team’s record is currently 3-0. The Cleveland Browns’ starting QB for the rest of the season could be a man of color — Seneca Wallace. Hall of Famer Warren Moon is really high on Wallace. Two black men — the Cincinnati Reds’ Dusty Baker and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Marvin Lewis — are the top mentors of these Ohio teams. Is this a first for the city? Who’s the best and most exciting QB in the NFL after the third week of play? The Philadelphia Eagles’ Michael Vick gets my vote. Check this out: In game three, Vick threw for three TDs and ran for a fourth. He’s playing great football. The only unbeaten blackcoached teams in the NFL going into the fourth week of play are the

BLACK FARMERS the USDA headquarters to the U.S. Capitol atop an orange tractor he named “Justice.” Prior to the march, Boyd drove “Justice” through the streets of Washington for a week. He has been calling on the Senate to pass funding for claims stemming from the class-action lawsuit, known as “The Pigford Case,” in which Black farmers sued the USDA for denying them fair treatment when they applied for federal assistance. The case was settled in 1999 and the federal government paid out about $1 billion to claimants. Approximately 80,000 black farmers missed the deadline for the 1999 settlement. In February 2010, the Obama administration announced a $1.15 billion agreement to resolve the second round of claims, with the purpose of bringing “these long-ignored claims of AfricanAmerican farmers to a rightful conclusion.” The funding has passed the House but has been stalled in the Senate, where it has been attached to several bills only to be scratched out. Sens. Hagan (D-NC) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, also stood with Boyd during the news conference to announce they are introducing a stand-alone bill with Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) to fund

the $1.15 billion settlement. “We want to ensure Black farmers in our country finally receive the justice they deserve,” she said in a press release. “More than 4,000 African-American farmers in North Carolina and over 75,000 nationwide have been discriminated against and denied just compensation for decades. Today, I join with my colleagues from Louisiana and Arkansas, Sens. Landrieu and Lincoln, to introduce a bill to fund the settlement once and for all, and we are working to send this language to the President.” The news conference was the culmination of the mile-long march, led by Boyd, which began at the steps of the Department of Agriculture and ended at the U.S. Capitol. Among the participants: John Bonner of Dinwiddie, Va., whose father passed away earlier this year but continues to have an outstanding claim. “At this late and critical stage of the process I was compelled to walk over to the Senate, stand up with my friends, and speak out for jobs, for justice, and for civil rights,” Waters said in the e-mail. “I will continue to speak and work with John Boyd and the Black farmers to make sure that this issue is finally resolved in a swift and fair manner.”

MARCHERS TO DESCEND ON D.C. OCT. 2

Hoping to help form national unity and get people back to work, organizers plan to hold a massive march in the U.S. capital Oct. 2 to push for jobs, justice and education for all. Crowds will walk in Washington, D.C., and eventually rally at Lincoln Memorial, where speakers will address issues affecting people from all walks of life. The event is being supported by the NAACP, National Urban League, the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and numerous labor unions as well as civil rights and social justice groups. “We have to focus on solutions that, quite frankly, reflect the values that got us out of the Great Depression,” NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous said in a recent conference call about the march. “We have to have the same values of investing in jobs, justice and more good schools.” Attacks on the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts, coupled with the controversial anti-immigration Arizona law, are evidence of the division permeating America, he said. He said the One Nation March will be the most diverse this country has ever seen: students, teachers, union members, clergy, activists, and others are driving, flying and coming in by the busloads to participate. Jackson is supporting the march. He said he hopes the march will place a major focus on jobs in America and increase voter turnout.

“This march and rally is to revive voters’ inspiration and focus on jobs,” he said during a recent interview at the Los Angeles Sentinel. Jackson has many concerns about the state of the nation. He voiced his opinions about them, including unemployment and an expected continuation of home foreclosures this year. Students are graduating from college indebted to loans they can’t afford to pay due to a shortage of jobs, he said, adding that student loan forgiveness would help stimulate the economy. Creating government infrastructure jobs would also help, according to Jackson. These are some of the issues confronting America, and during midterm elections, it is possible Republicans can gain majority control of Congress. “We have a vicious backlash whirlwind coming against us” Jackson said, referring to Tea Partiers and other conservative voices. Although he characterized the political situation in America in a serious tone, he also said Democrats have the power to maintain control of Congress. With this march, organizers’ attempt is to revive people’s interest with mass action, he said. Jackson also hope the event will

Miller also said One Nation is serious about getting people to vote. “We really want people to be re-energized to take their civic participation seriously,” she said. An event before the march will begin at 11 a.m. and open with a prayer service, which will engage the faith community. The main event begins at noon and ends at 4 p.m. and will include entertainment, which Miller did not want to reveal. Marc Morial, president of the Urban League, issued a statement calling on Americans to take the I Am Empowered pledge to help close the gaps on education, employment, housing and health care. “On October 2, one of the biggest progressive rallies in decades, focused on these goals, will happen in Washington, D.C. Will you march with us for jobs and justice?” In the statement, he said the League gave an economic stimulus plan to then-President-Elect Obama that, in part, addressed having a temporary public service employment program aimed at creating up to 200,000 jobs in urban areas. That six-point plan for job creation called for direct funding to states, municipalities and public employers, the statement said. “We’ve been called upon time and again to provide Congress with th our unique perspective on the employment challenges ges facing America’s urban comated. “The One Nation rally is munities,” Morial stated. unity for us to make our voices a significant opportunity heard.”

motivate and reinvigorate people’s spirits. He said marches are effective and produce results. Jackson spoke of civil rights marches he and others were in and said they didn’t know what the outcome of their demonstrations in Selma and Montgomery, Ala., would be. They simply understood that something had to be done and galvanized the people. “There was never a battle we fought for and never won, and we never won a battle we didn’t fight for,” Jackson said. Goals for the One Nation March include getting people re-energized and refocused, and having them do the same to people in their communities, as well as getting them to vote on Nov. 2. There are also plans to lobby Congress members next year in hopes to see the marchers’ goals become reality through policy. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people will participate, according to Yvonne Miller, mid-Atlantic region director for One Nation Working Together, which is organizing the event. Another estimate places the number of partici-

Looking For a DIY Project? Painting Is An Easy and Affordable Place to Start (ARA) — Whether you recently moved into a new home or you’re looking for inexpensive updates to spruce-up your existing home, consider experimenting with color. Paint is the number one do-it-yourself (DIY) project because it’s easy, affordable and instantly refreshes the look of a room. The painting project has become even easier with advances in paint technology and application to save every DIYer time and money. “Painting can refresh or change the look and feel of an entire room with a little planning and know-how and for less than $100,” says remodeling expert and DIY Network host Amy Matthews. “However, not everyone knows where to start or how to achieve the look they desire. That’s why preparation is so important.” Even the most novice DIYer can complete a painting project with great results. This checklist provides everything you need for a perfect paint job, the first time, regardless of skill or experience: • Painter’s tape. Tape with UV resistance will usually improve results if you are planning on using multiple coats and works well for both smooth and textured surfaces. 3M has recently introduced a new ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape with a paint line protector. The tape helps avoid seepage and ensures clean, crisp lines to give DIYers an edge.

• No-VOC paint. In addition to picking out the right color, select a paint with zeroVOCs (volatile organic compounds), so you can breathe easier and maintain a healthy indoor air quality. Lowe’s is the only national home improvement store to carry zero VOC paint available in any color. • Paint roller with extension pole, brushes, roller tray and roller covers. For the best finish, use quality brushes. You’ll need two brushes for every project — a small one for painting trim or detailed areas and a large one for covering surfaces quickly. Since most interior paints are water-based, choose a nylon or polyester (synthetic) brush. • Putty knife or 5-in-1 tool, spackle and sandpaper • Gloves, rags and drop cloths • A level and tape measure if you are planning on different decorative techniques Once you have your supplies, it’s time to prepare the surface you will be painting: • Fill cracks and holes with spackle. Sand after it has dried to make smooth. • Dust and clean walls with a towel or vacuum cleaner. • Apply painter’s tape. Pull the tape off the roll a few feet at a time and avoid stretching tape. Secure the tape by pressing down with a putty knife or 5-in-1 tool. Use a credit

card if you don’t have one of these. • If the surface is highly textured, seal the edge of the tape with the existing base color of the wall, as it will prevent paint from seeping under the tape. Now you are ready to paint. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: • When using a roller, paint in 3-foot by 3foot sections. Paint in long strokes using a zigzag pattern for a more even coating. Go back over areas if they look like they aren’t fully covered. • Always start in the highest areas, so drips can be smoothed as you go. • Once paint has dried, remove painter’s tape at a 45-degree angle at a moderate speed, pulling the tape back on itself. If the adhesive is sticking to the surface, try a 90-degree angle. Once the paint has dried and the tape has been removed, assess your work. If you’re sat-

isfied, you can move on to more challenging paint projects with creative applications, such as faux painting or stripes. For more information on painting supplies and home improvement tips, visit www.lowes.com.

How to Give And Know You’re Doing Some Good can find a way to give that fits your schedule and personal preferences. Are you handy around the house? Contribute your time to an organization that builds or repairs homes for those in need. Perhaps you’re a good cook or a deft server? Volunteer to prepare or serve meals at your local soup kitchen. Do you get along well with kids? Contact churches or homeless shelters in your area and volunteer for their child care programs. No matter how you choose to do it, donating your time costs you nothing more than a few hours, but can deliver the reward of seeing firsthand just who your contribution is helping. Finance a Micro Loan Money is often what people in need require most. Yet if you believe the old adage “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” you may feel hesitant to just hand over cash without knowing your donation will help the recipient build a better future for themselves. Funding a microfinance loan for a small business owner in a developing country is a great way to ensure your donation not only helps someone immediately, but helps create a better future as well.

Organizations like World Vision provide micro loans — ranging from $25 to $5,000 — to small businesses in Mexico, the Philippines, Kenya and Rwanda. Through the organization’s website, www.worldvisionmicro.org, you can fund a loan — entirely or partially. What’s more, you can select the entrepreneur you would like to help and designate exactly how much to loan that person. The website provides details on business owners, why each needs a loan, and how they will use the loan. After you’ve made a loan, you’ll get reports on how your chosen entrepreneur has spent the money, how his or her business is faring and how the entrepreneur is re-investing profits. Your loan is recorded as a taxdeductible monetary donation. When borrowers repay their loans, their funds go back into World Vision’s local community bank and the money is loaned out again to help other entrepreneurs in the same community. The repayment rate for World Vision loans is nearly 99 percent. Microfinance loans foster small-scale entrepreneurship and foster long-term solutions to poverty by helping individuals and commu-

“You’re more likely to drink cold water, which helps cool the blood and body by reducing body temperature” says Joanne Larson, a registered dietician who has extensive clinical experience in nutrition therapy and is a hydration consultant to Thermos. “Be mindful not only of the temperature, but what you’re drinking. Avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol, both of which will

cause you to lose more water.” Larson shares additional tips on staying hydrated and keeping cool: • Drink cold water every hour during hot weather and drink enough to replace sweat loss. • Offer infants and children cold water every time you drink water. • Older adults with memory loss may not remember to drink water so caregivers should offer water every hour in hot, humid weather. • Camp coaches should remind kids at camp to drink water even in mild temperatures. • Carry your reusable Thermos hydration bottle with you to keep you drinking throughout the day. To celebrate the launch of the OasisPlaces app, Thermos will sponsor random giveaways of free insulated hydration bottles to registered app users in August and September. OasisPlaces is available now for free download on iTunes. For more information, visit www.Thermos.com. Courtesy of ARAcontent.

(ARA) — Warmer weather can make it difficult to stay cool and hydrated. Whether you are playing sports, walking, biking, gardening or enjoying water activities, it’s important to drink water throughout the day, especially if you sweat. While it’s hard to stay hydrated during the warmer months, Thermos is coming to the rescue in an effort to “bring back the water fountain” with its new OasisPlaces iPhone application. OasisPlaces is a free usergenerated iPhone app that helps you find public water fountains, share experiences with others and keep your reusable Thermos bottle full of refreshing (and free) water. Registered users will be able to add new fountains, images, comments and ratings on the following criteria: coldness, cleanliness, location and flavor. Many people have made a commitment to avoid disposable bottled water, but it can be challenging to keep a reusable bottle full of fresh water while away from home or work. OasisPlaces is the perfect app for families, outdoor athletes and anyone with an active lifestyle who is avoiding using disposable bottles.

(ARA) — Making a charitable donation during the holidays isn’t just an act of kindness, often it’s also an act of faith. As you mail your donation check or drop some bills and loose change into that collection bucket outside the grocery store, it’s only natural to wonder just where the money is going, who it’s helping, and if it’s really helping anyone at all. Wouldn’t it feel good this holiday season to know your contributions are really making a difference? Knowing who your donation benefits can help make the act of giving even more enriching for you and the recipient of your generosity. Fortunately, there are ways to do good that you can also feel good about, knowing the real effects of your efforts. Here are two ideas for holiday giving that you can know will make a difference: Donate Your Time Everyone is busy during the holidays, but if you want to be confident your charitable giving is really making a difference, donating your time to a worthy cause is a good option. Not only will you enjoy the spiritual nourishment of actively helping others, you’ll be able to see the actual results of your contribution. The options are virtually endless and you

Republican Pledge: ‘A Trick Bag For America’ BY DANNY J. BAKEWELL SR. CHAIRMAN NNPA The Republican Party has spent most of the past two years as the “Party of No,” opposing nearly every policy proposed by President Obama and Democrats in Congress — a strategy that has worked politically, according to polls that say this November’s election could sweep Republicans back into the majority in the House and possibly the Senate. But until last week, the Republican Party had offered no agenda of its own — so party leaders finally produced one: the lofty-sounding “Pledge to America.” Sadly but predictably, this Pledge is nothing more than a promise to return to the failed policies that created the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and threw millions of Americans out of work — with most of the pain doled out to those at the bottom of the ladder. Those who yearn for a return to George W. Bush’s philosophy will cheer the Pledge’s promises of tax cuts for the rich and lax regulation of Wall Street. They will applaud the Republican call to repeal universal health insurance and to hand the Social Security Trust Fund over to Wall Street. But for African-Americans, this retrograde Pledge is a recipe for disaster. Our communities were hit hard by the Great Recession, and the economic crisis continues. AfricanAmerican unemployment now stands at 16.3 percent. Working families are struggling to pay the rent and keep food on the table. And the situation is critical for our youngest generation: among African-Americans ages 16 to 19, the unemployment rate is 26.2 percent — and that doesn’t include those with low-paying part-time jobs or those who have given up looking. For these youth, the American Dream is turning into a nightmare. President Obama and this Democratic Congress led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Whip James Clyburn (the highest-ranking African American in Congress) inherited this dire recession from Bush and the Republicans, and they’ve directed help toward those who need it most — despite stiff opposition from Republicans in Congress. If the “Party of No” had gotten its way, the Great Recession could have been worse than the Great Depression — an economic hurricane instead of a bad storm. They opposed

the Recovery Act. They opposed healthcare reform. They opposed ending tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. They even opposed 7 of the 8 tax cuts Congress

Danny J. Bakewell Sr. has passed to help small business owners. We don’t need to imagine what would have happened if Republicans ran Congress. We know their record — and now we can read their Pledge: to restore the immoral policies of Presidents Reagan, Bush and Bush II: tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and benefit cuts for everyone else and of course, nothing special for Blacks. It is unconscionable that at a time of our nation’s highest unemployment in more than 60 years, the Republicans propose a $4 trillion tax cut for the rich. They’re trotting out the same tired argument they’ve recycled for 30 years: cut taxes for billionaires, and some of their wealth will trickle down to the rest of us. Meanwhile, the Republicans promise to repeal President Obama’s Recovery Act, which cut taxes for 110 million families who don't happen to be rich. We already know the harmful impact of trickle-down economics — nothing ever trickles down for Blacks, minorities and the poor. Under Presidents Reagan and Bush, the economic divide widened to historic proportions due to huge tax cuts for millionaires while workers’ wages stagnated. President Clinton made a dent in pervasive inequality by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans and investing in education, health-

care, jobs and tax breaks for working families. While turning the budget deficit into a surplus those policies were good for all America. But President George W. Bush pulled a 180 degree turnaround, cutting taxes for the richest of the rich, letting Wall Street run wild, and slashing federal aid to working families. The result: rising inequality, the largest budget deficits in U.S. history, a cataclysmic financial crisis and net loss of eight million jobs. That’s what the Republicans pledge to repeat. One of the starkest contrasts between the Democrats and Republicans can be seen when it comes to healthcare. Today, one in five African-Americans is without health insurance. They can’t afford doctor’s bills if they get sick, and an emergency room visit or hospital stay can wipe out their life's savings. But we have reason to hope that this shameful situation will be eliminated in a few short years. Thanks to the landmark Healthcare Reform Law passed by Congress and signed by President Obama this year – unless the Republicans regain control of Congress. That is why we Blacks have to vote and get our neighbors, friends and community to vote. NNPA and our 200 Black publishers are asking our leaders to help us in rallying our base: churches, sororities, fraternities, Black students, community clubs, Black radio, community organizers, Black social media experts and all progressive people of goodwill. That’s right: With the U.S. finally on the brink of joining other developed nations that guarantee health care to all their citizens, the Republicans want to repeal universal health insurance, snatching health care away from tens of millions of people. The Republicans’ Pledge makes it crystal clear what’s at stake in November. We can’t sit home on Election Day and let the Republican Party turn back the clock on our country and on Black people definitely. I pledge, on behalf of 200 Black newspapers in this country, to do what we can to stop them! You can mark my words: If they take back the House (of Representatives), they will launch an investigation on President Obama that will make the investigation on President Clinton look like child’s play. They will make his next two years untenable and miserable, leading up to 2012. We will also lose two of our most visionary leaders of the 21st century in Speaker Pelosi and Majority Whip Clyburn. We can’t let that happen!

Why We Are Marching We are living through a very particular moment in American history. It is one in which diversity is increasing, while prosperity is decreasing. Barring great social movement, this is a formula for a battleground.

and we cannot remain quiet in the face of such clear and imminent danger to our nation’s progress. If we want change to continue; if we want to stop those who would roll the clock back in our nation, now is the time to get everyone off the benches and back onto the field. Our faith tradition teaches us to run and not get weary, walk and not

Alice Huffman

Benjamin Todd Jealous

Some see this moment for what it is, and try to hasten the battle by pushing our nation down and attacking diversity. And so they attack the Civil Rights Act and the 14th Amendment itself, the constitutional amendment that guaranteed equal rights to all. They try to make racial profiling state law — from Arizona to Alabama. We, the NAACP and more than 300 more organizations, see this moment for what it is, and are coming together on 10-2-10 to revitalize our nation’s great movement for common ground. We are doing this by putting our shoulders to the wheel and pushing up towards prosperity. We did this months ago by helping to win the battle to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. We did it a month ago by saving more than 150,000 teachers jobs. We did this a couple of weeks ago, by helping finally to get the small business new job creation tax cuts out of the Senate. We are focused right now on ending the Bush-era tax giveaways to the nation’s wealthiest, and passing the Dream Act, which gives a pathway to citizenship to hard working immigrant students who have lived in America all their lives. And we will be together on 102-10 for the One Nation Working Together march in Washington DC. We will be black, white, Asian, Native American and Latino. We will be old and young. We will be Christian, Muslim, Jewish and secular. We come together as One Nation to pull America back together and put America back to work. We must be bold and aggressive in turning this situation around

faint. We have made great progress and many strides, but we must press forward because our work is not simply for us — but for the future of our children and their children. On Oct. 2 we will march for hope and for progress. One measure of keeping hope alive is to put America back to work. But we are facing a Congress where a faction of the Senate rebuffs measures to do just that. The Miller bill which would create one million jobs is stalled in the House. We all remember the Senate’s chorus of no when attempts to extend unemployment benefits over the July 4th holiday failed. President Obama’s initiative to invest funds in local and state governments to stem layoffs of teachers and other critical personnel was also greeted with the No chorus. Now these same forces want tax giveaways to the millionaires and billionaires growing the deficit and further harming the economy. An employed workforce is the answer to the economic crisis not more subsidies for the wealthy. Families with jobs spend money. As consumers their buying power increases, which fuels businesses that can then expand and hire more employees. Rather than a trickledown theory where the wealthy get all the goodies, it makes sense to create jobs and financial security for the middle class and working families and watch the economy grow, The trickledown theory has resulted in a nation where the top 1/10 percent of Americans holds 976 times more income than the bottom 90 percent of our nation’s families. the darling of many. At least two black managers had their teams playoff- bound before last weekend. They were Baker’s Cincinnati Reds and Ron Washington’s Texas Rangers. It would be a historic moment if both made it to the World Series. And the beat continues… The back-to-back world champion Los Angeles Lakers opened training camp recently. CLASSIFIEDS STATEWIDE

MARCH

Continued from page 16 Critically related to bolstering our economic outlook is a commitment to ensure that every child in the country has access to a good school and a quality education. Instead too many states are resegregating their schools returning to the days of separate and unequal. Until our children are given an opportunity to get the best education available, we will never be able to compete with workers from other nations, where far too many of our corporations are relocating to get both cheap and skilled labor. We must harness our multiracial majority and make our narrative of hope and unity a renewed battle cry for change. The plight of the unemployed cannot be consigned to a whisper nor can we stand passively on the sidelines, waiting invisibly for change. Simply put, we have come too far to be turned back now, or give in to those who want to tear our country apart. Benjamin Todd Jealous is President and CEO of the NAACP. BISHOP LONG Continued from page 6

proceed on their masculine journey.” Bishop Long was the Academy’s “pastor/counselor/confidant” to the teens in the program. The plaintiffs allege the academy is Bishop Long’s method to influence and exploit vulnerable teenage males who, in the case of Flagg, have no father, or father-figure. Court documents state that after the then-teenagers were pronounced as Long’s “spiritual sons” within the program and church congregation, “defendant Long has a pattern and practice of singling out a select group of young male church members, and (uses) his authority as Bishop over them to ultimately bring them to a point of engaging in a sexual relationship.” Shortly after Robinson and Flagg, now both 21, joint lawsuit became public, a third plaintiff, 23 year-old Colorado resident Jamal Parris filed a sexual harassment lawsuit, alleging similar charges. However, in his lawsuit, Parris is claiming that while he was occupying Bishop Long's guest house in DeKalb County, the pastor would regularly request Parris be nude for pastoral visits. All three men are being represented by Brenda Joy (B.J.) Bernstein a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. At press time, a fourth male, Spencer LeGrande filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Long, alleging similar charges occurred when he was a member of New Birth-Charlotte, a satellite church based in North Carolina. The then17 year old LeGrande, in the lawsuit, claims to have engaged in sex with Long in 2005, after being given a sleeping pill and continued the relationship until 2009, accord-

ing to Associated Press reports. Attorney Bernstein was unavailable for comment. Bishop Long is denying the allegations. The first Sunday after the allegations came to light, Long stood before his congregation, denouncing the accusations. “I am going to fight this thing. I am not a perfect man, but I am not the man being portrayed” as a “sexual predator.” Although Long did not definitively deny the allegations to his congregation, he spoke to all people having to “face painful situations”. “This is the worse time of my life,” the pastor proclaimed at the morning service, dressed in beige-tan garments with New Birth insignia. Following the service, Long addressed local and national news media at a press conference in New Birth’s chapel. Bishop Long cancelled all media interviews prior to the church press conference and taking no questions from reporters, he said the civil lawsuits “would not be fought in the media, but within a court of law.” After the brief press conference, Bishop Long left with his wife, Vanessa, and his attorneys; Craig Gillen and Dwight Thomas, of Atlanta. In statements to the radio media, attorney Gillen, said, “It is unfortunate these young men have chosen to take this course of action.” Gillen added, “Bishop Long adamantly denies these allegations. We’re reviewing the complaints ... and will respond in the proper venue.” Gillen announced Bishop Long, the father of four, wanted to “be clear. The charges against me and New Birth are false. I have been through storms, and my faith

has always sustained me. I have devoted my life to helping others and these false allegations hurt me deeply.” The plaintiffs’ attorney who is remembered for successfully defending Genarlow Wilson in a sexual sodomy case brought by Douglas County and the state of Georgia told The Atlanta Inquirer, “the courage of these young men to stand up is testimony to (obliterate) Bishop Long’s great influence, as well as they trying to get to the truth of the betrayal ... for a productive life.” She also warned, “There are kids right now at risk (at New Birth).” Bernstein refused a request by a reporter to speak with the plaintiffs last week, indicating, “They’ve relocated for the moment … To (initiate litigation) was very emotional for them,” stating that emails, text messages, and pictures provided to the young men “will speak for the cases against the Bishop.” Bernstein stated she had no comment after Bishop Long’s sermon.
