MAGAZINE ISSUE 01

ISSUE 01

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR . . . Thank you, dear reader, for picking up the first issue of LAB 140 Magazine. Whether you are flipping through a printed copy or viewing online, you are taking the time to support a growing community of young artists. I cannot thank you enough for that. I named this magazine after the darkroom in Moulton Hall at Chapman University. It was in that room that I (and the rest of the editorial board) had my perspective of photography radically changed. With the guidance of my professor Dee Williams, I learned the beauty of shooting and developing film. Ideas were explored and brought to life with bits of silver and light as I discovered a need for a tactile interaction with the medium. At the end of the course, I looked at the stack of prints I had created. These photographs meant so much more to me than the thousands I had on my hard drive. I began this magazine with the goal of sharing meaningful photographs. It is an opportunity to print our images, to make sure that our work does not simply exist in pixels. Issue 01 is meant to bring together the photographers of Chapman University. I am proud to feature 34 photographers representing seven of Chapman’s eight undergraduate colleges. From different backgrounds, fields of study, and photographic styles, these artists are working alongside each other to create and explore visual language. They are the inspiration for this magazine. I hope for LAB 140 to be a space for support, growth, and expression. It is a chance to lift up our peers and say: “Look at this beautiful mess that has poured from their hearts and minds”. - Lia Hanson

My photographs are either spontaneous or very staged. I may spend a large amount of time or no time at all on a frame, depending on the setting and the situation. I’m really interested in the slow growth of cities and how that can be photographed, but also very interested by portrait work.

This series was completely experimental, being only my second roll of film on the new (old) camera I bought at a junk store in my hometown in Connecticut. In both design and photography I strive to create art that is unexpected and doesn’t take itself too seriously. My design/photography aesthetic is characterized by simplified shapes and bright colors. Simultaneously, I hope to trigger some sort of reaction from the viewer whether that is laughter or disgust.

TH E WEEKEN DERS We don’t have many long weekends at Chapman. Holiday breaks are great, but like many Panthers, our adventurous spirit pushes us to break free of our geographical box made up of the 55, 57, 91, and 22 freeways. Early on in my career at Chapman, I realized that between the end of my Friday afternoon class and the start of my 8am Monday class, there are 68 hours of

weekend. This series features images exclusively taken within that time period, the result of which being: several failed quizzes, a few missed classes, and a sense of exhausted euphoria sitting in class on Monday morning knowing that, a few hours ago, I was standing on top of a remote peak with my fellow Panthers as we click into our skis to return to civilization.

“A lot of people who see this finished product will never see that it started with a couple of napkins and a crumbled-up cookie, that is what I find beautiful. What ends up happening is what people see is something completely ethereal and out of a fantasy world. When really, it is about a cookie and a fucking Powerade. - Nicole Lynn Fox
