YMCA BAHAMAS RECUPERACIÓN DEL HURACÁN YMCA BAHAMAS HURRICANE ASSISTANCE INFORME FINAL / FINAL REPORT
La tormenta tropical Matthew se formó a finales de septiembre y principios de octubre convirtiéndose en huracán categoría 5 con vientos sostenidos de 260 km/h. Al principio Matthew tocó tierra en Haití y la parte oriental de Cuba y después batió con fuerza las Bahamas el 5 y 6 de octubre. El huracán obligó a los residentes a abandonar sus hogares, daño infraestructura, causó inundaciones y caos, derribó árboles, líneas eléctricas y de comunicación por varias semanas. El Gobierno de Bahamas estimó que los daños superan los $600 millones. Karon Pinder-Johnson, Secretaria General Nacional de la YMCA de Gran Bahamas, informó que el equipo profesional, voluntarios y beneficiarios se encuentran con bien y a salvo, pero sus instalaciones sufrieron daños mayores. La tormenta destruyó los campos deportivos, tiró las bardas perimetrales y dañó el edificio central poniendo en riesgo la seguridad de los niños y jóvenes. Tropical Storm Matthew formed in late September into early October becoming a hurricane Category 5 strength with 160 mph winds. Matthew made landfall in Haiti, eastern Cuba and then hammered the Bahamas on October 5 and 6. The Hurricane forced residents to flee their homes, damaged structures, caused flooding and chaos, and downed trees, power and telecommunication lines for several weeks. The Government of Bahamas estimated the costs associated with the storm to be more than $600 million. Karon Pinder-Johnson, National General Secretary for YMCA of Grand Bahama, reported that all staff, volunteers and members of the YMCA in Freeport were safe but the facilities suffered major damage. The storm destroyed fields, downed boundary fences, and damaged the main building compromising children and youth safety. Outdoor furniture was damaged beyond repair. Facilities are currently not suitable for regular outdoor activities. Due to physical damage to business establishments such as hotels and hospitality services, there were many persons left unemployed or laid off.
Financial strain on families had put additional pressure on YMCA membership impacting programs and activities.

- Difficulty to acquire corporate sponsorships for programs. - Staff members were all placed in part-time status. - Families did not have resources to pay for program fees nor a safe place to leave their children. - Damage to infrastructure, particularly baseball and soccer fields, swimming pool and parking lot, impacting key programs of the YMCA. The estimated costs to repair batting cage, fencing of all gates, and project management is USD $12,000; not including all necessary repairs.

PROVIND HOPE TO THE BAHAMIAN COMMUNITY La ayuda financiera de la familia YMCA internacional ayudó a restaurar la seguridad y estabilidad financiera de la YMCA a través de las siguientes actividades: - Reparación de la barda perimetral, así como de las bardas de seguridad de los campos de béisbol y fútbol, canchas de tenis y área de alberca garantizando la seguridad e integridad de los participantes, especialmente los niños que estaban expuestos a la carretera principal y al tráfico vehicular. - Disminución de la accesibilidad para actividades delictivas. - Mejorar la apariencia física de las instalaciones y la posibilidad de albergar eventos deportivos locales para la generación de recursos. - Incrementar el registro de participantes de béisbol y otros programas. - Apoyar la participación de la YMCA de Bahamas a la conferencia anual de la ALCACJ para compartir e intercambiar con otras YMCAs. Planes futuros: - Fortalecer los programas de niños y jóvenes impactados por la emergencia, así como los programas deportivos y de vida saludable para posicionar el trabajo de la YMCA y expandir el impacto. - Trabajar en red con otras YMCAs del Caribe para mejorar los contenidos y ejecución del programa de After School. - Elaborar un plan de fortalecimiento institucional en colaboración con la ALCACJ.
Financial assistance from the global YMCA family helped bring a sense of security, restoration, and increase YMCA financial stability by: - Repairing the fencing to secure baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, swimming pool, and outside perimeter; ensuring further security and safety for members, especially children who were exposed to main highway and traffic. - Decreasing accessibility for criminal activity. - Uplifting the physical appearance of the facility and increasing readiness to host several local sporting events for income generation. - Increasing baseball and other program registration. - Supporting attendance of the YMCA Grand Bahama to LACA’s annual conference to connect, share and learn with other YMCAs. Future plans: - Strengthen programs for children and youth impacted by the emergency, as well as sports and well-being programs to position the work of the YMCA and increase impact. - Partner with other YMCAs in the Caribbean to improve After School curriculum and program delivery. - Develop a movement strengthening plan in collaboration with LACA.
