Introduction to Typography Book Jackets Lachlan Heydon s2893871
Chosen Books Z For Zachariah Level 7 I Am Legend
The reason for choosing these books came down to the fact that they all shared a common theme a post apocalyptic view of society. They are also written in first person as a diary - a factor which was incorporated into the design of the book covers.

Sketches & Development The decision was made to use a foam print of each letter in the title, to give it a worn and weathered look, representative of the post apocalyptic world. This letter was also to appear bigger than the rest of the title, as a way of conveying the isolation that these books deal with.

Publisher Design The logo I designed was for a fictional publishing company titled “Fallout Publishing. The logo here is a fallout mask to signify that these are part of a post apocalyptic series and theme.

Manifesto The common theme linking these three books is the postapocalyptic theme. They are also all written in the style of a diary, told by the protagonist. I wanted to demonstrate this in the design, whilst obviously using typography as a tool to convey this. I really liked the results of the foam print of the weekly exercise that was done in Introduction to Typography and so decided to employ this in the book covers. The three books used also feature a prominent letter or number that would work well with this design. Using foam, I stenciled and printed it onto an A4 sheet of paper. It worked nicely, leaving a wear and tear that looks as if had been thrown about in the wasteland. These were then image traced in illustrator to give it scalability. The second part of the design was the rest of the title, which needed to be hand written. This was to represent the idea of a diary that was being written by the protagonist. I practiced the lettering over and over again until I had one I was happy with. This was then image traced and vectorised. Initially, each cover was a different colour to differentiate between the three books. The letters were also smaller to fit on the cover. After receiving advice at the critique, I adjusted the lettering be scaled bigger than the actual book. This created a displacement, which worked much more effectively. The letters were inverted in illustrator to make them look like a negative print. The now white letters also worked better from the idea of portraying isolation, as they are now a singular letter surrounded by ‘black space’.
This was much more effective than the initial white space and colour. I could also place the handwritten part of the title in more places, which created a more effective style. This meant the covers now feature scale and tension. It the colours were also removed to create a monochromatic style. The handwritten part was changed to red, as a way of foreshadowing the sinister nature that appears in all books. The spine featured a smaller version of the cover, however all in white to ensure they looked uniform sitting on a shelf. The font used for the authors name was Futura, as a way of reinforcing the futuristic nature of the books. Originally, the covers were jackets, however I felt they worked better as covers and were as such changed. Overall, I believe these covers effectively convey the contents of the book and set the tone for the gripping novels awaiting.
