The 1959 Cuban Revolution provided the Cubans with a brief moment of utopian optimism and architects with the freedom of creating the most radical and hopeful designs for the development and redesign of the country. It is in those early days from 1959 to 1964 where the dreams for a new and better society give birth to the Cuban National Schools of Art. Cuban architect Ricardo Porro and Italian architects Roberto Gottardi and Vittorio Garatti were commissioned to design and develop the (ENA) Escuela
Nacional de Arte university complex on the historically Habana Country Club site with the mission of FUHDWLQJ &XED V ÀUVW XSSHU education comprehensive program for the studies of music, dramatic arts, plastic arts, contemporary dance, and ballet. The National Schools of Art site is one of much polemic as by 1965 the architecture of the schools was fallen disfavored by the communist party and soon after the VFKRROV ZHUH XQÀQLVKHG abandoned and forgotten. The thesis intervenes into the site with the purpose of
completing the National Schools of Arts. Phase 1 is intended to be an eleven (11) gate remote concourse accommodating a range of activity VFHQDULRV DQG Ă HHW PL[HV It is anticipated that the MSC will have a varying role in accommodating forecast demand at LAX. In thenear-term, the MSC ZLOO OLNHO\ IXQFWLRQ DV D Ă H[ concourse, temporarily providing gate capacity as one of LAX's existing terminals undergoes reconstruction. Also in the near-term, the MSC may accommoGDWH RYHUĂ RZ LQWHUQDWLRQal demand that cannot
be accommodated by Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). Even after the completion of Phase 1, the West Remote Gates are expected to remain open. In its longer term role, the MSC is expected to function primarily as an international departure and arrival concourse. The MSC ZLOO KDYH D Ă H[LEOH Ă LJKW OLQH allowing it to accommodate both wide and narrow body aircraft. The MSC will provide up to Airplane Design Group (ADG) VI-sized gates (A380, 747-8) on the east side of the concourse
and up to ADG V-sized gates (777, 787, A350) on the west side of the concourse. The Phase 1 SURMHFW ZLOO LQFOXGH DSURQ and taxilane construction on both sides of the concourse with the full build-out of Taxilane T on the east side and the construction of Taxilane C12 on the west side. Enabling work to relocate facilities contained within the Phase 1 site, which is being performed under a separate contract, is currently underway.

Our vision for the new facility for the Milwaukee Bucks is not only as a state-of-the-art venue, but also as a great civic space for the city of Milwaukee. The design features materials that are drawn from the city’s most recognizable buildings—brick, copper and timber—but presents them in an entirely new way. This multi-

purpose event venue will showcase both the Bucks and Marquette University as the home tenants while creating a unique summer / winter civic center capturing the spirit of outdoor living, sport, and entertainment WKDW GHÀ QHV :LVFRQsin and Milwaukee. Replacing a relic of a bygone era, the new facility will improve the
marketability of Milwaukee as a premiere destination on the concert circuit and will also serve as the destination for Milwaukee’s social nightlife during non-event times.
This material, visible throughout Milwaukee, appears in a series of sequential arches that frame the entrances while giving an overall structural form to the arena. The warm color of the brick and distinctive shape provides a tangible reference point and welcoming appearance, while also giving a scale to the venue. These are a distinctive feature of Milwaukee breweries and provide a conceptual basis for the bowl enclosure. The copper ‘kettle’ has been
reinterpreted as a screen surrounding the concourses of the arena, lit by the sun E\ GD\ DQG /(' À [WXUHV DW night. The rounded shape of the seating bowl is designed to be a landmark feature for the city. Wood WUXVVHV DSSHDU LQ WKH PDMRU historic structures of the city and are designed to be a unique feature of the arena. The warm tone of the ceiling structure will be unique among NBA arenas and will form a beautiful balance with the brick and copper.
All of the internal elements of the arena are linked to the neighborhood through large windows facing north, south, and east. These expanses of glass bring in daylight to help warm the venue in colder months and link to the historic brewery and factory windows of the city of Milwaukee. In summer months, these glazed façades can be opened to provide a direct extension to outdoor events in the urban plaza.

The HCR Speedway is a symbol of the New Detroit, a vibrant metropolis that is aware of its great history, but ready to transform and prosper in the information age. My inspiration for the HCR Speedway comes from automobile racing, a sport tradition that is integral to the history of the American automobile, and continues to push the limits of technology and human skill. To me,
the automobile race represents tenacity and dynamism, charDFWHULVWLFV SHUVRQLĂ&#x20AC;HG by the people of Detroit as they work towards rebuilding their city. By transforming the schemes for four types of motorsport tracks- NASCAR, IndyTrack, drift track and drag strip- -we have created program loops that windaround the perimeter of the site.

The HCR Speedway proposes a new urban entity that hybridizes commercial, educational, and recreational spaces within a city block, so that all of these can be conveniently accessed by foot and via people mover. While the car is an important part of
Detroitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, the growth of a contemporary urban center will no doubt rest on the intensity of its pedestrian activity as well as WKH HIĂ&#x20AC;FDF\ RI LWV SXEOLF transport. By creating the HCR Speedway as a central destination for Downtown residents, we hope to create an economic and social magnet around which the community will bloom.

The concept developed for the home inverted planning and hierarchical norms common in local residential planning. To fully appreciate the mature and variegated natural environment and stretch the potential for visual depth and distance, the main living room and study were located in a pavilion on the second

storey. It was designed with minimal enclosing and supporting structure so as to maximize the elevated vistas. The programmatic organization allows the primary residents to live entirely on the ground Ă RRU LQ D VHULHV RI VSHFV that have intimate connections to the landscape.
This house is designed as an upside down house, giving the most spectacular views to the private areas RQ WKH WRS Ă RRUV 7KLV Ă RRU takes advantage not only of the southern exposure and views, but provides for adequate solar control. The central living space is bracketed on the south side by a large concrete Ă&#x20AC;UHSODFH ZKLFK SURYLGHV privacy from the street. The orientation, form, and positioning of the upper volume was designed to protect against direct solar gain
during the summer months, while allowing light at lower sun angles to penetrate into the spaces during the winter months.

With the green premise growing in popularity across the globe, more and more people are turning to cargo container structures for green alternatives. There are countless numbers of empty, unused shipping containers around WKH ZRUOG MXVW VLWWLQJ RQ shipping docks taking up space. The reason for this is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too expensive for a country to ship empty containers back to their origin. In most cases, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s MXVW FKHDSHU WR EX\ QHZ containers from Asia. The
result is an extremely high surplus of empty shipping containers that are MXVW ZDLWLQJ WR EHFRPH D KRPH RIĂ&#x20AC;FH DSDUWPHQW school, dormitory, studio, emergency shelter, and everything else. Emerging from the uncontrollability of hydrology and urbanism, the 80,000 ft2 paving system is comprised of thousands of pre-cast and cast-inplace concrete surfaces that mutate from hori-

zontal to vertical at key points, both adaptive and constantly changing. Approximately two hundred of these pavers delaminate and peel off the ground.
Levitating as if by the force of South Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wind or QDWXUH¡V LQĂ XHQFH IURP below, they reveal an unexpected thinness â&#x20AC;&#x201D; under which a subterranean landVFDSH H[LVWV VXEMXJDWHG E\ the man-made. Concrete material behaviors are made possible through the use of different concrete technologies, including an extremely high-strength proprietary mixture and VWDQGDUG JODVV Ă&#x20AC;EUH FRQcrete mixes. Environments are cultured below our everyday expe-
rience of the pavement: VSHFLĂ&#x20AC;F PLFURFOLPDWHV DUH created by embedding tubes into the concrete, chilled surfaces remove humidity from the air, and fans create air movements. The massive numbers of tiles becomes a living agent of physical organization, paralleling the archival system of the zoological garden and further blurs the boundary between authentic and fabricated. The public art proposal presents a possibility of positioning visitors to be critical of
the precarious position of the zoo in relation to the imaginary, natural environment it constructs.

At the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rooftop, private programs such as a helipad, lap pool, lounge pool and sun deck, along with work out facilities, event spaces and dining
areas, will be divided up amongst a series of alternating levels.
My solution acknowledges the design attributes of its neighbours on Parks, but brings new qualities: honHVW H[SUHVVLRQ JHQHURVLW\ HIĂ&#x20AC;FLHQF\ DQG KXPDQLW\ ,Q designing sky gardens, we are reconnecting workers and the city with nature, by using different American landscape ecologies, from forest to alpine, to suit the different altitudes of each garden. These spaces also offer great views of the park and the metropolis of Miami. A generous open space at ground level gives users and passing public a retreat from the urban bustle.
