Prescription to Get Active (RxTGA) is an initiative that started back in 2011 with the intent to get people more physically active. Now, there are 32 health care organizations, 3,200 physicians, and over 153 locations participating across the province. Over 300,000 Albertans have become more active as a result of this initiative! Lac La Biche County, Portage College, the Primary Care Network (PCN) and the Associate Medical Clinic have partnered to provide this exciting program to keep residents active and reduce health concerns. What is involved? RxTGA patients are prescribed activity by a doctor or health care professional. Patients who present their RxTGA prescription to participating facilities will receive a specified period of free general admission to facilities to get active. Patients will receive a complimentary orientation to the facility, demonstration of equipment and ongoing support and consultation from certified staff if required to help achieve their goals. Where? Portage Pool offers first aid and CPR courses throughout the year, but during the month of November we spread the word about the importance of learning CPR. WHAT IS FCSS? Community

Lac La Biche County Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) is a partnership between Lac La Biche County and the Government of Alberta. The mandate of FCSS is to provide locallydriven, preventative social initiatives that enhance the well-being of individuals, families and the community. Local FCSS branches like ours are part of a larger provincial program that collectively ensures Albertans have access to a strong network of preventative social supports. Our programs aim to establish a healthy community of empowered individuals, resilient youth, supported seniors, and healthy families. We also provide a mix of direct programs and grant funds to support community organizations. We are strengthening community partnerships and looking at barriers to increase social support systems in the community. We are working on strategies to reduce complex social issues like unstable housing and poverty.

BLOCK PARTIES

Connect with your community and get to know your neighbours— throw a block party in your area today! FCSS can help you plan the perfect event, providing a gift card for food, street signs, a binder with activity ideas, and more.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM (CVITP)

FCSS has offered tax preparation help for seniors with modest income and simple tax situations for many years, and is now extending this free service to all individuals with modest income and simple tax situations. Call us at 780-623-6745 to book your appointment starting in March, provided you are below the following income thresholds: • Single Person – $35,000 • Couple – $45,000 • Adult with one child – $47,500 (for each additional dependent you have, add $2,500 to family income)

GRANTS

Both Lac La Biche County and FCSS offer separate grant programs that help community groups, non-profits, and individuals offer programs, events, and activities that strengthen the community. To learn more about both Lac La Biche County community grants and FCSS grants, visit laclabichecounty.com.

INTERAGENCY

The Lac La Biche County Interagency is a group of service agencies and community members who meet to share information and ideas, and discuss current trends and issues that affect residents’ quality of life. All interested groups and individuals are invited to attend bimonthly meetings.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORTS

Every person has unique gifts and passions–volunteering in our County is an excellent way to discover what you’re good at while you build new skills. All the while, you’ll make a positive impact on children, families, seniors, newcomers and long-time residents in the area, secure in the knowledge that you’ve made your community a better place to live, work and play. Not sure where to volunteer, or how to begin volunteering? FCSS provides supports that make it simple.
