ora Schröder, de origen alemán, lleva ya 25 años ofreciendo su creatividad en el mercadillo de Las Dalias: es una de las valientes que permanece fiel a esta convocatoria incluso en los meses de invierno. Sentada en una mesa de la terraza con unos amigos con los que comparte conversación y botella de cava, no pierde de vista el puesto donde se exhibe sus creaciones: chalecos, muchos chalecos, confeccionados con la única ayuda de su imaginación y su habilidad con las agujas de ganchillo. Ella misma luce uno en el que ha suavizado la agresividad del tigre con una elegante combinación de elementos que hacen de cada una de sus prendas una pieza única y probablemente irrepetible.

Los chalecos de Mora no son los que se pondría un ejecutivo de la City londinense para acudir al banco o a una agencia de valores.

Sólo con verlos desaparece esta posibilidad. Ellos se lo pierden en aras de la malentendida corrección que parece dominar en los mercados financieros. Las prendas de esta diseñadora, que teje ella misma, rompen con todos los convencionalismos y rígidas estructuras, aunque no parece convencerle el término ‘hippy’ para calificarlas. “Mi moda es muy sexy, para las mujeres que quieren estar muy guapas”, define. Pero el público femenino no es el único al que va dirigida la artesanía de Mora. “También confecciono chalecos para hombres y para niños”, explica, vestida con una despreocupada elegancia que emana de su interior y que corona con un caprichoso y favorecedor sombrero para protegerse del sol en una tibia mañana del invierno ibicenco.

Mora lleva ya 48 años residiendo en Ibiza, donde confiesa sentirse “muy feliz”. Vive en Rubió, cerca de San Miguel, y confiesa que jamás se ha planteado cambiar de vida. “Me gusta tal y como es”. Sin embargo, su iniciativa no se limita a su puntual asistencia todos los sábados a Las Dalias. Organiza también desfiles y performances de su moda en otros establecimientos, como Atzaró, donde su marido ofrece representaciones teatrales.

he German Mora Schröder has been sharing her creativity at Las Dalias Hippy Market for 25 years.

She is one of the brave people who faithfully come even in the winter months. Seated at a table on the terrace while chatting with some friends over a bottle of cava, she watches over the stall where her creations are exhibited: waistcoats, many waistcoats, manufactured with only the help of her imagination and her skill with crotchet needles.

She is wearing one of them herself, in which she has softened the aggressiveness of the tiger with an elegant combination of elements that make each of her garments a unique piece of clothing that she would probably be unable to reproduce.

Mora’s waistcoats are not like those worn by executives working at a bank or stockbroker in the City of London. You only have to see them to realise this. But they are the ones losing out, because of the poor dress code that seems to predominate among those working in the financial sectors.

This designer’s garments, which she crotchets herself, break all the conventions and rigid structures, but she is not convinced by their being described as “hippy”. “My designs are very sexy, for women who want to be very beautiful”, she explains.

But Mora’s garments are not only for women. “I also make waistcoats for men and children”, she says, dressed with a casual elegance that emanates from her soul, and crowned with an extravagant, flattering hat to protect her from the sun on a cool Ibizan winter morning.

Mora has been living on Ibiza for 48 years now, where she feels very happy. She lives in Rubió, near Sant Miquel, and admits that she has never considered changing this life for a different one. “I like my life just as it is”, she says. Her participation is not limited to her attendance every Saturday at Las Dalias. She also organises fashion shows and performances for her work at other establishments, such as Atzaró, where her husband organises theatre performances.

Una alianza de amor Romantic and burlesque

os caminos de Pinka y Álex tenían que encontrarse.

Lo hicieron, por fin, hace dos años, y se hicieron inseparables. Pinka era entonces el alma de los diseños “Ser-Villana” y Álex, de “DayDreams”. Juntas son Love Alliance, una marca de ropa romántica con un toque militar y ‘burlesque’, atractiva y arriesgada. Pinka no oculta su decepción por el camino que han tomado otros artesanos, “que se han estancado en lo mismo de siempre o sólo traen cosas de Asia”, asegura. Ellas buscan su propio camino: prendas desmontables y combinables, corsés, cancanes y unos espectaculares sombreros ‘customizados’, que son uno de los puntos fuertes de la marca.El cliente puede elegir entre los miles de abalorios, plumas y detalles increíbles que estas dos aventureras encuentran en sus viajes por el mundo para poder crear un sombrero verdaderamente exclusivo. Un lujo asequible. Su estilo rompedor y nada convencional las hace herederas directas de Mora, su

‘hada madrina’, que en 2009 les hizo, literalmente, un hueco en Las Dalias, renunciando a parte de su espacio en el mercadillo para que ellas pudieran exponer sus trabajos en pleno verano. Esta temporada vuelven con fuerza, espacio propio y para quedarse. Tozudas y trabajadoras, la madrileña Pinka y la gallega Álex han conseguido ganarse la vida con lo que más les apasiona, aunque les ha costado mucho esfuerzo, trabajo y bastante ‘morriña’ de sus familias. Ahora sus diseños se exportan a Australia, Estados Unidos, Rusia o Portugal y pueden reinvertir en la marca, que mejora día a día. Pasan cada año seis meses en Goa (India), donde dan trabajo a cuatro familias, para confeccionar sus diseños. Se sienten orgullosas y están intentando mejorar las condiciones de vida de las personas que colaboran con ellas, implantando allí energías alternativas. Residen ente cuatro y cinco meses en Ibiza. El resto del tiempo, apenas uno o dos meses, los emplean en viajar por todo el mundo para descubrir rincones, alimentar su insaciable curiosidad y trasladarlo todo a sus creaciones.

he paths of Pinka and Álex were destined to meet. They finally did two years ago, and became inseparable. Back then, Pinka was the soul of Ser-Villana designs and Álex was the soul of DayDreams designs.

Together they formed Love Alliance, a brand of romantic clothing with a military, burlesque, attractive and risqué touch. Pinka does not hide her disappointment at the paths embarked upon by other craft traders who, according to her, “do the same as has always been done, or only bring things over from Asia”. Pinka and Álex try to create their own identity, with detachable and combinable clothes, corsets, cabaret clothes and spectacular, custom-made hats, which is one of the brand’s strongest products. Customers can create a truly exclusive hat by choosing between thousands of beads, feathers and incredible details that these two adventurous ladies find on their travels around the world. An accessible luxury Their groundbreaking, unconventional style makes them direct heirs to Mora, their “fairy godmother”, who in 2009 gave up part of her space in the market to allow Pinka and Álex to put their work on display during the height of the summer.

This season they will be back with a force, with their own space, and will stay. The stubborn, hard-working Pinka, from Madrid, and Álex, from Galicia, have managed to make a living doing what they love best, though not without much effort, hard work and the difficulty of being away from their families. Their designs now get exported to Australia, the United States, Russia and Portugal and they are able to reinvest in the brand, which improves day by day. Every year they spend six months in Goa (India), where they provide work for four families who manufacture their designs.

They feel very proud and are trying to improve the living conditions of those who work with them, implementing alternative energies there.

They spend four to five months living on Ibiza. The rest of the time – one or two months at the most – they spend travelling around the world discovering new places, feeding their unquenchable curiosity and transferring this into their designs.

Marionetas con vida Living puppets

enía sólo doce años cuando comenzó interesarse por la escultura de gomaespuma.

“Vi una cabeza grande hecha de ese material y ahí comenzó todo”, recuerda este artesano de nueva hornada.

Imposible no enamorarse a primera vista de sus marionetas de gomaespuma, un material que en manos de Nacho Villelga se convierte en piel y hueso. “Las esculpo con tijeras y el resultado es tan maleable que, cuando lo aprietas, el muñeco gesticula, con lo que la sensación de realidad es tremenda”.

Muchos años y mucha práctica han sido la receta para lograr estos diseños, que también conquistaron el corazón de Juanito de Las Dalias. “Sé que el proceso de selección para entrar en el mercadillo es duro y no todos lo consiguen, pero gusté y aquí estoy”, subraya con orgullo este madrileño de 35 años que cumple su séptima temporada en la isla. Además, un amigo envió un mail entusiasta al dueño del local, hablándole maravillas del marionetista. “Eso le tocó el corazón y me arropó más por eso”, recuerda.

Lo que empezó como un hobby pronto se convirtió en un oficio.

Ahora ya puede vivir de lo que le dan sus criaturas. Pasa el verano en Ibiza y recorre ferias de la Península durante el invierno, por eso tiene suficiente criterio y experiencia para afirmar con rotundidad que Las Dalias “es diferente a cualquier otro mercado que puedas ver por ahí. No encontrarás ni la gente variopinta ni la calidad de género que hay aquí. Es visita obligada”.

Se ha hecho un pequeño taller en casa, donde va creando sus piezas. “Trabajar de lo que uno hace, sin jefe, tiene sus ventajas, aunque la inestabilidad a veces es un problema, sobre todo porque has de organizarte muy bien, y a veces fallo en eso”, admite con una sonrisa.

Su familia ha aceptado pero no ha entendido que se dedique a la artesanía. “Mis padres me dicen todavía: ¿por qué te has hecho artesano, hijo, si tus tres hermanos están trabajando, tienen sus casas, tienen sus hipotecas...?”. Nacho se ríe. Ha encontrado su sitio.

“I saw a large head made out of this material, and that’s where it all began”, recalls this member of the latest batch of craft traders.

It is impossible not to fall immediately in love with his foam rubber puppets, which are made from a material that becomes skin and bone when in the hands of Nacho Villelga. “I sculpt them with scissors, and the result is so malleable that, when you press on them, the puppet gesticulates, making them look incredibly lifelike.”

These designs, which are also loved by Juanito at Las Dalias, are the result of many years and much practice. “I know the selection process for the market is very tough and not all artists manage to get in, but he liked what I did, so I’m here”, says the 35-year-old man from Madrid, who is on the island for his seventh season. A friend sent an enthusiastic e-mail to the owner of Las Dalias, speaking wonders about the puppeteer.

“This touched his heart, which felt good”, says Nacho.

What began as a hobby soon became a profession. Now he can make a living from it. He spends his summer on Ibiza and his winter going to fairs on the Spanish mainland. He therefore has the necessary knowledge and experience to categorically say that Las Dalias “is different to any other market you will find. You won’t find this diversity of people or quality of items anywhere else. You really have to go.”

He’s set up a little workshop at home, where he makes his work. “Working doing what you enjoy and as your own boss has its benefits, especially as you have to be well organised, which is where I sometimes fail”, she admits with a smile.

Her family have accepted that she works as a craft trader, but they don’t understand. “My parents still say, ‘Why did you become a craft trader, son, if your three siblings all work and have a house and a mortgage?’“ Nacho laughs. He has found his place.

Dise単o a cuatro manos Four-handed design

etrás de la marca de ropa Nomeolvides están las hermanas Sara y Ruth Cabal. Hijas de artesanos, crecieron rodeadas de patrones, telas y lanas, en un ambiente de creatividad y libertad.

Ya desde muy niñas dibujaban figurines y se hacían su propia ropa, por lo que casi no sorprende que, de manera muy precoz, con apenas 17 años, diseñaran su primera colección. El espíritu artesano que les inculcaron sus padres se ha mantenido a lo largo de toda su carrera y hoy continúan trabajando las prendas a mano y cuidándolas con todo detalle. Ruth se ha especializado en diseño y patronaje, mientras que Sara domina el punto y el tricotado a máquina. La calidad de sus diseños no pasa desapercibida. Durante una sesión de fotografía en las calles de Madrid, un directivo de la marca Liberto quedó prendado del estilo de estas jóvenes, que acabaron creando una colección de vaquero y punto para esa marca en el verano de 1999. Los viajes de las hermanas a India, Indonesia, Marruecos, Nepal o Brasil han ido marcando su estilo, que se define como una constante experimentación con nuevos materiales y cortes. ¿El resultado...? Prendas únicas, frescas y atrevidas, diseños favorecedores e imposibles de olvidar.

En sus comienzos los cortes eran juveniles y desenfadados, con un toque hippy-chic. Ahora caminan hacia una tendencia más elegante y femenina, “pero sin perder el toque bohemio ibicenco”, remarcan. Se inspiran en todo lo que les rodea: la gente de la calle, las pasarelas, las actrices, los artistas, sus viajes...

Dibujan bocetos, toman apuntes y, cuando llega el momento de diseñar, las dos hermanas se sientan y analizan sus propuestas durante días o semanas hasta que dan con la clave de la nueva colección.

Como son madres y autónomas, saben mejor que nadie que un joven diseñador no lo tiene siempre fácil. Aunque las creaciones tengan la calidad y la belleza de las prendas de las hermanas Cabal, “hoy día” hay que competir con ropa muy barata que viene de Asia”, lamentan. Pero no se quejan. Se sienten independientes, confeccionan los diseños que quieren y se emocionan cada vez que ven a alguien con sus prendas o que, simplemente, les dice que les gusta su ropa. Su vinculación a la isla se remonta a cuando eran muy niñas. Con apenas tres y cuatro años, respectivamente, su madre las trajo a Ibiza, aunque alternaban la isla con períodos en una aldea de aire hippy en Sierra Morena, en Huelva. “Siempre volvíamos a Ibiza, donde nuestra madre vendía ropa y pareos”, rememora Sara. Las hermanas Cabal han encontrado siempre en este rincón de Sant Carles un refugio y una familia. Llegaron por primera vez al mercadillo en 1994 y dos años después ya se hicieron un hueco definitivo en el corazón de Juanito y en el jardín de Las Dalias.

Ahora tienen dos puestos en verano.

isters Sara and Ruth Cabal are the driving force behind the Nomeolvides brand of clothing. Daughters of crafts people, they grew up surrounded by patterns, textiles and wool in a creative and free environment and as long as they can remember they have been sketching patterns and making their own clothes. It should therefore be no great surprise that they were equally precocious – they were only 17 at the time – in designing their first collection.

The craftsman’s instinct instilled in them by their parents has stayed with them throughout their careers, and even today they still produce their hand-made clothes with the same attention to detail. Ruth has specialised in design in general and pattern design in particular, while Sara’s specialities are hand and machine knitting. The quality of their designs has not gone unnoticed. During a photo session in the streets of Madrid, a director of the Liberto brand was so taken with the style of these young people that they ended up designing a denim and knitwear collection for the brand for the summer 1999 season.

The sisters’ visits to India, Indonesia, Morocco, Nepal and Brazil have influenced their style, which has been defined as a constant experimentation with new materials and shapes. And the result?... Clothes that are unique, refreshing and bold, whose designs are both flattering and memorable. When they started off, their shapes were youthful and uninhibited with a hippy-chic feel. Now they are evolving in a more elegant and feminine direction, “but without losing their Ibiza-Boho feel”, they say. The sisters draw their inspiration from everything around them: people in the street, fashion parades, actresses, artists, their own travels etc. They draw sketches, take notes, and when the time comes to start designing, both sisters sit down and pore over their ideas for days or even weeks on end until they home in on what is to be the core of their new collection. Both mothers and self-employed, they know only too well that young designers don’t always have it easy. Even when their clothes with the quality and beauty of the Cabal sisters’ creations, “these days, you have to compete with really cheap clothing coming in from Asia”, they warn. But they have no complaints. They enjoy being independent, they make the designs that they like and are still thrilled whenever they see someone wearing one of their designs, or simply tells them how much they like their clothes. The sisters’ link with the island goes back to their earliest childhood. At the ages of three and four respectively, they were first brought to Ibiza by their mother, although they alternated island living with periods in a hippy-style village at Sierra Morena in Huelva. “We always came back to Ibiza, where our mother would sell clothes and pareos”, recalled Sara. The Cabal sisters have always found this corner of Sant Carles to be both a refuge and a family. They arrived at the street market here for the first time in 1994, and two years later they had already settled in for good in the heart of Juanito and the Las Dalias gardens. Now they run two stalls every summer.

hilippe podría haber seguido errando por el mundo como ha estado haciendo durante casi toda su vida.

Desde su Francia natal, ha recorrido muchos países, especialmente latinoamericanos, y ha conocido a “mucha gente”, según explica con su hablar pausado y muy relajante. Pero hace seis años recaló en Ibiza y desde entonces apenas se ha movido de Las Dalias ni ha recorrido muchos más kilómetros que los que separan Sant Carles de su casa en Es Canar. Su fuerza, el motor que mueve su vida, está en sus ojos y en la clarividencia de su mirada para adivinar el pasado, el presente y el futuro de las personas que desean conocerlos y que se acercan hasta su puesto.

“No aprendí a leer las líneas de las manos, siempre he sabido hacerlo”.

Sus vaticinios parecen satisfacer a sus clientes, ya que “muchos vuelven y lo hacen con sus amigos. Si no acertase en mis pronósticos, seguro que no regresarían”, expresa, al tiempo que desiste de valorarse a sí mismo como vidente. “Uno no puede juzgarse a sí mismo. Es el juicio de los demás lo que te da la credibilidad”.

Las personas que desean conocer su futuro o reafirmar conocimientos sobre su pasado tienen en Philippe a su oráculo por sólo diez euros la sesión, cuya duración nunca tiene un tiempo exacto: “No llevo nunca reloj ni me gusta limitar el tiempo que dedico a cada persona. Eso depende: hay vidas que son muy complicadas”.

Pero la clientela de este adivinador no se limita al público de Las Dalias.

Philippe recibe con frecuencia la invitación de muchos mandatarios de todo el mundo que reclaman sus servicios y ponen un avión a su disposición. “Yo les pregunto que por qué me eligen a mí y no a un lector de manos de su propio país, pero me responden que sus compatriotas suelen ser demasiado complacientes con ellos y que sólo les vaticinan cosas buenas”, explica con buen humor. Sobre el futuro de Las Dalias, Philippe se muestra prudente, aunque sus palabras transmiten optimismo.

“Es imposible leer la mano de un lugar, pero puedo intuir que el futuro será bueno para este espacio porque tiene muy buena onda”, interpreta, tras pensar unos instantes. Tan buena onda como su vida en Ibiza, que califica de “bastante agradable”. “Me siento bien acá”, resume.

hilippe might have continued wandering around the world as he had been doing for almost all his life.

From his native France he has visited many countries, especially in Latin America, and has got to know “lots of people”, as he explains, with his unhurried and relaxed demeanour. But six years ago he called in at Ibiza, and since then has hardly moved from Las Dalias, nor travelled much further than the distance that separates Sant Carles from his house in Es Canar. His strength, the driving force that moves his life, lies in his eyes and the clarity of his gaze when predicting the past, present and future of the people whom come to his stall seeking this knowledge.

“I never learned to read lines on hands, I always knew how”. His predictions seem to satisfy his clients since “many come back and bring their friends. If I wasn’t accurate in my predictions, I’m sure they wouldn’t come back”, he says but making no claims for himself as clairvoyant. “You can’t judge yourself. It’s the judgement of others that gives you credibility”.

People who want to know their future or to confirm what they know about their past can have Philippe as their oracle for only 10 euros per session, which never has a set length: “I never wear a watch and I don’t like limiting the time I devote to each person. It depends: some lives are very complicated”.

But the clients of this fortune teller don’t just come from Las Dalias.

Philippe often receives invitations from leaders throughout the world requesting his services and putting a plane at his disposal. “I ask them why they chose me instead of a palm reader from their own country, but they say that their own people are usually too eager to please and only predict good things”, he explains good naturedly. On the future of Las Dalias, Philippe did not want to give anything away, but his words conveyed optimism. “It’s impossible to read the palm of a place, but intuition tells me that its future is assured because it gives out very good vibrations”, he commented after spending a few moments in thought.

Vibrations as good as those of his own life in Ibiza, which he describes as “extremely pleasant”. “I feel good here”, he concludes.

Revivir el cuero Reviving leather

M

anos curtidas como el cuero que trabaja: fuertes y decididas a que ningún encargo se le resista. José Luis Domínguez es el único guarnicionero tradicional de la isla, el único ‘selleter’ que confecciona aperos para caballos a la manera artesanal. Hace 14 años que se dedica a ello, aunque comenzó confeccionando bolsos y cinturones. “Como tenía buena mano para el cuero, empecé arreglando alguna cosilla de caballos para los amigos y de ahí me fui especializando”, explica este artesano, que confiesa que aprendió del mejor maestro que podría tener: Joan ‘Sitges’, de Sant Llorenç, ya fallecido. “Él me lo enseñó todo”, dice sin vacilar.

“Lo primero que me dijo al conocerme fue: ‘Si usted tiene tiempo para perder, yo no tengo ninguno’”, recuerda. Fue una entrada un poco cortante pero pronto, entre pieles y costuras, se hicieron amigos.

Las piezas que más aprecian los campesinos son la collera –collar de cuero o lona, relleno de borra o paja, que se pone al cuello a las caballerías– y el ‘selletó’ –silla de caballo–, pero este artesano fabrica todo lo imaginable con cuero. “Hacer una buena collera me lleva una semana, son unas piezas muy apreciadas porque sin ellas no puedes llevar el carro. Puedes poner un pechopetral al caballo, pero no, ése no es el estilo del carro payés”, explica con verdadera pasión.

Es sevillano “de Osuna”, puntualiza, pero habla ibicenco perfectamente para entenderse con sus clientes, muchos de ellos amigos, que le encargan piezas para sus caballos. No le cuesta reconocer que su aspecto, con el pelo largo y pendientes, hacía que los payeses no le mirasen con muy buenos ojos, “pero pronto me ganaba su confianza”, explica.

José Luis llegó a Ibiza como cocinero hace 35 años, pero en el cuero ha encontrado una verdadera pasión. Una vocación que comparte con su mujer, María Remedios Grau. “Yo disfruto haciendo estas cosas, pero haciéndolas bien”, dice con rotundidad. No sólo se decida al arte de la guarnición. Su buena mano con el cuero ha convertido sus diseños de bolsos y cinturones en objetos muy apreciados en el mercadillo.

Además, Las Dalias ha querido acercar al público tanto su labor como la de otros artesanos tradicionales de la isla y, por eso, hace tres años que cada primer sábado de mes organiza una pequeña muestra de las diferentes vertientes de la artesanía popular pitiusa. Se pueden encontrar instrumentos musicales tradicionales, aperos de campo, mantones, ‘espardenyes’… Todas son piezas únicas que hablan de la historia de la isla.

José Luis Domínguez is the only traditional ‘guarnicionero’ (saddle maker) on the island, the only ‘selleter’ (tackle maker) who still makes horses’ harnesses by hand. Although he started off making bags and belts, fourteen years ago he took up his present trade. “I was very handy with leather, so I started mending bits and pieces for horses for my friends and gradually went on to specialise”, explained this craftsman, who confesses that he learned from the best master ever: Joan ‘Sitges’, from Sant Llorenç, now deceased. “He taught me all I know”, he said without hesitation. “When we met, the first thing he told me was: ‘If you’ve got time to waste, I haven’t”, he recalls. That was rather an abrupt introduction but soon, among the skins and the seams, they became friends.

The pieces most valued by farmers are the horse collar (collar made of leather or canvas, stuffed with flock or straw, placed around the horse’s neck), and the ‘selletó’ (saddle). But this craftsman makes everything you can imagine in leather. “Making a fine horse collar takes me a week, as pieces they’re highly prized because without them you can’t pull the cart. You can put a breast collar on a horse, but no, that’s not the style of a farm cart”, he explained, revealing his passion for the subject.

He’s a Seville man, “from Osuna”, but he speaks Ibizan perfectly so as to communicate with his customers, many of them now friends, who order pieces for their horses. He doesn’t mind admitting that at first his appearance, with his long hair and earrings, wasn’t very well received by the country people “but I soon won their trust”, he smiles.

José Luis arrived in Ibiza as a cook 35 years ago, but since then he has found his true passion in leather. A vocation he shares with his wife, María Remedios Grau. “I enjoy making these things, and making them well”, he insists. But he doesn’t spend all his time on the art of tacking. His deft hand with leather ensures his designs for bags and belts are in great demand in the market.

Las Dalias wanted the public to learn more about his work and that of other traditional crafts people on the island, and so three years ago, on the first Saturday of every month, it started to bring together a small sample of the different kinds of popular Balearic craft work. You can find traditional musical instruments, field implements, blankets, ‘espardenyes’ (espadrille shoes) and many more. All are unique pieces that bear witness to the island’s history.

ació en Suiza, de padres italianos, y desde niña sus manos le dijeron que sería artesana, aunque las monjas se empeñaban en suspenderla en la asignatura de corte y confección. Daniela, que no tiene ni la mitad de los años que figuran en su partida de nacimiento, estudió para ser secretaria, y reconoce que con el tiempo ha agradecido tener esos conocimientos de contabilidad para organizar un poco el negocio. Pero sólo para eso, porque supo muy pronto que aquella no era su vocación. Le marcó para siempre un viaje a India en coche con 19 años y también conocer a Buzzi, su pareja todavía hoy, que por entonces vendía bisutería diseñada por él en la calle. “Nos enamoramos”, dice con una sonrisa en los ojos, que miran a su compañero. Juntos planearon un viaje a Marruecos, pero una oportuna avería en el coche les hizo recalar en Ibiza.

Recuerda aquellos difíciles inicios, cuando llegaron a la isla en pleno mes de enero, con un hijo pequeño y una caravana.

“Durante muchos meses sólo nos alcanzaba para comer arroz y lentejas, lentejas y arroz” , confiesa, pero, poco a poco, sus diseños fueron gustando cada vez más y pudieron asentarse en una pequeña casa. Ella tenía el talento en sus manos y Buzzi muchas ideas y diseños, algunos muy arriesgados y poco vendibles, pero apreciados por su originalidad. Con el tiempo, Daniela adaptó las creaciones a los gustos de la gente, aunque siempre manteniendo su estilo y confeccionado “algunas piezas especiales para gente especial”, explica. “Quiero vender mis cosas, nunca venderme a mí misma”, añade, sin disimular el orgullo de una mujer luchadora.

Trabaja mucho –“a veces demasiado”, bromea– en su taller, confeccionado con piel fina y suave desde bikinis a abrigos, pasando por faldas, pulseras o colgantes. “Me canso de estar tanto tiempo con la máquina, así que ahora dedicaré más tiempo a mi huerto biológico para disfrutar del sol y el aire”, confiesa con la expresión inequívoca de quien tiene una nueva ilusión en mente. Ahora toma una cervecita con Buzzi, mientras hilvana el presente con el pasado al sol de la terraza de Las Dalias. Una banda sonora de pájaros piando y voces de artesanos y clientes acompaña la conversación. Daniela tiene claro que Las Dalias es uno de los pocos lugares de la isla que mantiene aquel espíritu que les atrajo a Ibiza. Buzzi remarca que este lugar “no es un mercado ni un mercadillo”, dos palabras que, a su juicio, ensucian el alma de un espacio mucho más mágico y especial “Este lugar tiene corazón”, dice Buzzi. “Este lugar me ha permitido ser yo misma”, remarca Daniela.

orn in Switzerland of Italian parents, from childhood on her hands told her that she’d do something in crafts, although the nuns did try their best to put her off cutting and tailoring. Daniela, who must be half the age that figures on her birth certificate, studied to be a secretary, and admits that she has been grateful for her knowledge of accounting, which has helped her organise her business. But no more, because she knew right away that this was not her vocation. Her life changed for ever on a trip to India by car with she was 19 and met Buzzi, still her partner today, who was then selling his own jewellery designs in the street. “We fell in love”, she says with a smile in her eyes as she gazes at her partner. They planned a trip to Morocco together, but then the car broke down and they ended up in Ibiza.

She recalls these difficult days, when they arrived on the island in the depths of January, with a small child and a caravan in tow.

“For months we only earned enough to eat rice and lentils, lentils and rice”, she confesses, but little by little, their designs began to catch on and they were eventually able to settle down in a small house. She had talent in her hands and Buzzi’s took the form of ideas and designs, some of which were very daring and although not very commercial were admired for their originality. In time, Daniela adapted his creations to suit customers’ taste, although always maintaining their style, creating some “special pieces for some special people”, as she explains. “I want to sell my things, not myself”, she adds, with the unconcealed pride of woman of spirit.

She works hard –“sometimes too hard”, she jokes – in her workshop using fine, soft leather to make anything from bikinis to overcoats, including skirts, bracelets and earrings. “I get tired of being cooped up so many hours over the sewing machine, so now I spend more time in my organic garden to enjoy the sun and fresh air”, she confesses, with the expression of someone who has discovered a new passion. She and Buzzi drink a small beer while she slips from present to past, in the sun on the terrace at Las Dalias. A soundtrack of birds twittering and the voices of craftspeople and their clients forms the backdrop to our conversation. Daniela is convinced that Las Dalias is one of the few places on the island that keeps alive the spirit that first drew them to Ibiza. Buzzi remarks that the place “is neither a market nor a street market”, expressions that in his view don’t do justice to the spirit of a place that is much more magical and special.

“This place has heart”, says Buzzi. “This place has let me be myself”, adds Daniela.

l mundo cultural de Ibiza no está sólo formado por la música que producen las discotecas, la pequeña producción literaria, la moda o el inmenso campo que ofrece su artesanía. Existen también apacibles rincones en los que cultivar el espíritu y profundizar en otros campos del pensamiento. Jackie es, en este sentido, un oasis de paz en medio del bullicio que se genera en la isla durante el verano.

Su mundo es la literatura y su habitáculo, una pequeña pero bien surtida librería cuya particularidad no es la venta de ‘best sellers’ de actualidad ni los últimos títulos del mercado más consumista, sino las pequeñas joyas de la narrativa, la poesía y el ensayo universales que se han publicado en el pasado reciente y el más remoto. Sus libros de segunda mano contienen ideas, pensamientos y sentimientos de primer orden, que han permanecido tan frescos e inspiradores como el mismo día en que fueron escritos o que, tal vez, han ganado con el tiempo una mayor profundidad y capacidad de seducción. Su colección también está formada por grandes novelas o poemarios que han hecho felices a más de un lector. “La

temática de los libros que vendo es muy variada, pero me gusta dedicar también un espacio a las cosas espirituales y esotéricas. Hay un poco de todo”, relata mientras repasa los lomos de los ejemplares que tiene a la venta. También las lenguas en que están escritos son múltiples.

“Tengo obras en veinte idiomas distintos, algunos poco conocidos, pero la mayoría están escritos o traducidos en las lenguas de mayor difusión”, explica Jackie, que lleva 35 años residiendo en Ibiza y vendiendo en Las Dalias desde los inicios del mercadillo. Contrariamente a lo que se afirma en el mundo editorial, que no escapa a la crisis, el público que acude a su establecimiento sí se interesa por la cultura. “No toda la gente que viene a Las Dalias viene a mi establecimiento, pero sí una parte, lo que es ya un número importante de personas”, expresa. “Todos ellos afirman sentirse muy a gusto entre tanto libro”. El encanto de las librerías de viejo, con sus estanterías llenas de pequeños tesoros en forma literaria, y la enorme variedad de estilos que pueden hallarse en sus rincones conforman uno de los momentos más espirituales de la visita a este local único en Ibiza y probablemente en el mundo.

biza’s cultural world includes more than just disco music, an embryonic literary production, fashion and the admittedly vast field of its craft work. There are other peaceful corners where its spirit is cultivated and alternative fields of thought are nourished. This is where Jackie offers an oasis of peace in the midst of the bustle that overtakes the island every summer. Literature is her world, and her base is a tiny but well-stocked bookshop whose main interest lies not in the day’s ‘best sellers’ or the latest titles that feed the more consumerist side of the market. Instead it concentrates on those small jewels of universal fiction, poetry and essays, published any time from yesterday to the remotest past. Her second-hand books contain essential ideas, thoughts and feelings that are as fresh and inspiring today as they were the day they were written, and which time has perhaps made even more relevant and appealing. Her collection also contains the great novels and poetry collections which have made so many readers happy. “I sell books on a great variety of subjects, but I always like to keep a space for spiritual and esoteric works. There’s a bit of everything!” she explains, surveying the spines of the volumes on sale. The languages of the books are also multiple. “I’ve got works written in twenty languages, some of them little known, but most are in or translated into the major languages”, explains Jackie, who has been living in Ibiza and selling her books at Las Dalias for 35 years, since the market started. In contrast to the views of the publishing world, which is suffering the crisis, the public who come to her shop are certainly interested in culture. “Not everyone who comes to Las Dalias visits my shop, but quite a lot do”, she says. “And everyone says they feel at home surrounded by so many books”. The charm of a second hand bookshop, with its shelves filled with minor literary treasures, and the enormous variety of styles occupying every nook and cranny is one of the most special and spiritual moments of a visit to this shop, unique in Ibiza and probably in the world.

Los sonidos del tiempo The sounds of time

E

ntrar en el mundo de Yaron Marko supone una inmersión acústica en ‘Las mil y una noches’. La colección de este músico israelí y cosmopolita consta de más de doscientos cincuenta instrumentos étnicos y folclóricos. Él mismo fabrica la mayoría, pero también compra otros con la intención de crear un museo en un futuro próximo.

Los didjeridoos, los campos tubulares que forman seis tubos colgantes afinados en escala pentatónica, la kalimba africana o las maracas son algunos de los exotismos sonoros que forman parte del patrimonio cultural de este hombre, casi siempre vestido de blanco inmaculado, aunque no así el día de esta entrevista. Las maderas del albaricoque, el cerezo y el enebro sirven a Marko para crear y recrear dulces melodías que conducen al oyente a los más remotos lugares del espacio y el tiempo. De la época del Rey David, por citar sólo un ejemplo. Los palitroques, las cajas de percusión, las castañuelas y demás instrumentos de origen hindú, vietnamita, nepalí, tailandés, camboyano y africano, entre otras procedencias, completan este mosaico de sonidos deslumbrantes, embriagadores y luminosos, un pequeño gran mundo de músicas que exhibe siempre espiritual y dulcemente en las distintas ferias artesanales que se celebran en Ibiza y en otros lugares, en un doble viaje muy ‘chill out’, seductor y relajante para los sentidos.

Pero la gran ilusión del músico es la creación de este museo étnico-musical, probablemente en Ibiza, donde reside desde hace 32 años y donde siempre acepta la invitación de otros músicos para colaborar en sus grabaciones y actuaciones. En este centro, para el que no dispone todavía de local, Marko desea divulgar al mundo la diversidad cultural que alberga a través de sus instrumentos y sus músicas, una riqueza de valor incalculable, cuyo precio ni él mismo se plantea: “La cultura no tiene precio”.Sus instrumentos siempre suenan bien. Es el caso de la kalimba, de origen africano, que tiene varios tamaños, o las pequeñas arpas bíblicas. “Yo también soy muy veterano”, observa de buen humor este artesano que comparte el perfume y la delicadeza de su música con todo el que quiere sumarse a su fiesta multicultural.

tepping into Yaron Marko’s world is like immersing yourself in the acoustic equivalent of ‘A Thousand and One Nights’. The collection of this Israeli and world musician runs to over two hundred and fifty ethnic and folk instruments. He made most of them himself, but has bought others with a view to creating a museum in the near future. Didgeridoos, tubular bells (six hanging tubes tuned to the pentatonic scale), the African kalimba and maracas are some of the more exotic sounds that form part of the cultural baggage of this musician, almost always dressed in immaculate white, although not for this interview.

Marko uses apricot, cherry and juniper woods to create and recreate his sweet melodies that transport their listeners to far-off places in space and time. The era of King David, to give just one example. Sticks, percussion boxes, castanets and other instruments of Hindu, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Cambodian and African origin, among others, complete this mosaic of amazing, intoxicating, luminous sounds. A small but grand universe of musics that accompany craft fairs across Ibiza and beyond with their spiritual, soft sounds conveying their ‘chill out’, seductive and relaxing ambience.

But this musician’s real dream is to create an ethno-musical museum, probably in Ibiza, his home for 32 years and where he always accepts invitations from other musicians to collaborate in recordings and concerts. At this centre, as yet with no physical base, Marko wants to spread the word on the cultural diversity represented by his instruments and musics, a wealth of incalculable value whose price even he wouldn’t dream of estimating. “Culture is priceless”, he insists. His instruments always sound great, whether it’s the kalimba from Africa in any of its sizes, or one of the small Biblical harps. “I’m quite a veteran too”, observes this musician with a wry sense of humour, who is happy to share the perfume and delicacy of his music with anyone who wants to join his global celebration.

La cara oculta de los mu単ecos The hidden face of dolls

L

os casi treinta años que Pablo Albizuri lleva en España no han mermado apenas el acento porteño de su Buenos Aires natal. Su puesto en la artesanía ibicenca es el fruto de muchos años de trabajo en lo que él denomina la postura y la expresión del cuerpo humano, aspectos que lleva estudiando muchos años. Para ello, este escultor utiliza materiales reciclados que le sirven para recrear el aspecto y las particularidades del cuerpo humano. Sus muñecos se han convertido en objeto de deseo de pequeños y mayores. “Si viviese sólo de los niños, ya sería millonario”, asegura con humor, recordando la mirada anhelante de muchos pequeños que se enamoran de sus figuras y que marchan disgustados de su puesto, tirados a regañadientes por sus mayores.

No obstante, el público mayoritario del escultor son precisamente los adultos, capaces de valorar con mayor perspectiva y capacidad de análisis el valor de sus creaciones, que se llevan como motivo decorativo para sus hogares.

Lleva más de veinte años en Ibiza presentando sus creaciones, lo que no impide que viaje también al exterior, especialmente durante el invierno, para mostrarlas en exposiciones y ferias artesanales que se llevan a cabo en multitud de países. Las muñecas y muñecos de este artista no están concebidos sólo para que jueguen los pequeños.

No hablan ni hacen pipí ni toman biberón, pero tienen el encanto del juguete fabricado con esmero y cariño por alguien que ama su trabajo, un ejemplar único de cada personaje con su expresión facial y corporal singular, fruto de muchas horas de observación por parte de alguien que nació con capacidad para observar y con la generosidad de compartir con los demás todo aquello que crea: juguetes y objetos decorativos a la vez que alegran las habitaciones infantiles, pero que pueden colocarse también sobre cualquier mueble del salón con la seguridad de que captarán la atención desde cualquier rincón. Porque Pablo Albizuri huye del estereotipo de las muñecas más famosas que se anuncian en televisión, fabricadas en serie, vestidas con los patrones que dicta la moda en cada momento y de expresión siempre almibarada. Las suyas tienen personalidad, carácter, fuerza y la facultad de emocionar a quien las contemple con alma de niño y espíritu de adulto amante de las cosas bellas y trabajadas con amor.

he almost thirty years that Pablo Albizuri has spent in Spain have done little to mark the Argentine accent of his native Buenos Aires.

His position in the Ibiza craft world is the result of many years of work which have led him to dominate the posture and expression of the human body, aspects that he has studied for many years. In his work this sculptor uses recycled materials to recreate the appearance and quirks of the human body. His dolls have become objects of desire for young and old alike. “Even if I made my living just from children, I’d be a millionaire”, he smiles, recalling the longing looks of many of the children who fall in love with his figures and who have to be dragged reluctantly away from his stall by their elders. However, most of the sculptor’s public are in fact adults, who are better equipped to see the value of his work which they buy to decorate their homes.

But this has not stopped him from travelling widely, especially in winter, showing them at craft exhibitions and fairs all over the world. For the dolls of this artist are not just meant as children’s playthings. They may not talk or wet nappies or suck bottles, but they have the charm of toys made with care and affection by someone who loves their work. Each is a unique example of a particular character, with its individual facial and corporal expression, the result of many hours’ observation by someone who was born with the ability to observe and the generosity to share his creations with others. These toys and decorative objects will certainly brighten up children’s bedrooms, but can also be happily given pride of place in the sitting room, in the knowledge that they will draw the eye wherever they are. Pablo Albizuri’s creations are nothing like the typical TV-advertised doll, mass produced, dressed as current fashion dictates and wearing a sugary smile. His dolls have the character and force of personality to touch everyone who looks at them with the eyes of a child and the judgement of an adult, who appreciates beautiful objects made with love.

os padres de Noelle Rusanzic eran polacos inmigrantes que “sufrieron mucho durante la guerra”, un hecho familiar que la ha marcado de por vida. Ese sentimiento de ser “diferente” está detrás de su pasión por los astros y cómo éstos determinan nuestras vidas desde que nacemos. Así, comenzó a interesarse por la astrología desde muy joven y no ha parado de investigar.

Se toma muy en serio lo que hace y por eso le duele ver cómo se banaliza su pasión en los medios de comunicación. “Durante más de 500 años la astrología estuvo reprimida por la religión y, por otra parte, se ha extendido el horóscopo en diarios y revistas que sólo dicen cosas tontas”, lamenta. “La astrología no es eso, es la conexión con el cosmos, es una ciencia espiritual que nos ayuda a ser más conscientes de nuestros dones y talentos y también de las dificultades, de los tiempos difíciles y los beneficiosos que se van a vivir”, asegura esta francesa que se asentó en Ibiza en 1974 después de que un cúmulo de casualidades la trajeran a la isla.

“La efectividad del tarot depende del momento, de que se establezca una conexión casi mágica con la persona que tienes delante”, dice con una sonrisa en sus ojos azules, enmarcados por una larga y rizada melena rojiza. “Yo no te voy a decir si tu marido te quiere o si está con otra mujer, pero sí puedo ver si estás en una relación equivocada o negativa para ti, lo otro es caer en lo bajo. No soy una vidente”, subraya. “Las cartas son verdaderamente útiles cuando las personas tienen algo importante que les preocupa, no por mera curiosidad”, advierte.

Comprende que haya gente reacia a que le echen las cartas –“es como entrar en tu intimidad”–, como también admite que alguna vez, estudiando las cartas para ella misma, ha repetido la tirada porque no le gustaba lo que veía. “El autoengaño es muy humano”, asegura con absoluta sinceridad.

Su relación con Las Dalias comenzó hace casi 20 años. “Juanito ha conseguido reunir allí mucha calidad, haciéndolo interesante para cualquiera que lo visita” y, además, “es una oportunidad para muchos artesanos que tienen que inventarse la vida día a día. El precio de la libertad es la inseguridad”, afirma con total empatía hacia sus compañeros.

Vive en Sant Joan, “en una pequeña isla dentro de la isla”. “Allí las cosas no han cambiado tanto en estos años”, concluye con otra de sus generosas sonrisas abiertas.

he parents of Noelle Rusanzic were Polish immigrants who “suffered great hardship during the war”, a family circumstance that marked her for life. This feeling of being “different” explains her passion for the stars and how they determine our lives from the day we are born. She began to take an interest in astrology at a very early age and since then has never ceased her investigations.

She takes her profession very seriously and it hurts her to see how her passion is trivialised in the media. “For more than 500 years astrology was repressed by religion, only to be kidnapped by the banal horoscopes in today’s newspapers and magazines”, she deplores. “Astrology is something else, it’s the connection with the cosmos, a spiritual science that helps us to be more aware of our gifts and talents and also our problems, the difficult and productive times that we are going to experience”, says this French woman who settled in Ibiza in 1974 after a series of coincidences led her to the island.

“How effective tarot is depends on the occasion, on establishing an almost magical connection with the person you’re dealing with”, she says with a smile in her blue eyes, framed by her long red hair. “I’m not going to tell you whether your husband loves you or has another relationship, but I can see if you yourself are in a relationship that is wrong or negative for you, not the other stuff. I’m not a fortune-teller”, she insists. “The cards are particularly useful when people are seriously concerned, not just curious”, she warns.

She understands that some people are reluctant to let her use the cards – “it’s like invading their privacy” – and she also admits that, when studying the cards for herself, she has occasionally re-dealt them if she didn’t like what she saw. “Self-deception is a very human failing”, she says, with her typical sincerity.

Her relationship with Las Dalias began almost 20 years ago. “Juanito has managed to bring together a lot of quality here, making it a fascinating place for everyone to visit”, and in addition, “it provides an outlet for many crafts people who have to fight for their livelihood on a daily basis. The price of freedom is insecurity”, she says, showing a total empathy with her colleagues.

She lives at Sant Joan, “on a small island within the island”. “Things haven’t changed much there over the years”, she concludes, with one of her generous, open smiles.

as Dalias es una isla muy particular dentro de la isla de Ibiza. Aquí puede puede ocurrir cualquier cosa estimulante, nunca decepcionante. Aparte de las numerosas figuras del mundo de la cultura, el deporte y la comunicación que todos los años la visitan, la sala y el jardín sorprenden frecuentemente a sus seguidores con una selecta sucesión de actuaciones en directo que permiten a los amantes de la música un contacto mucho más directo e íntimo con sus artistas favoritos que el que se produce en los grandes estadios o plazas y grandes de aforos. No hay selección de estilos, sólo criterios de calidad. Tampoco hay nacionalidades preferentes. Los músicos de origen anglosajón se alternan habitualmente con otros genuinamente españoles, que aprovechan los escenarios de la sala para estrenar sus canciones o cualquier aventura artística en la que hayan recalado al margen de los estudios de grabación,

Capítulo aparte merece Hilight Tribe, una formación de extraordinaria fuerza que fabrica música trance con sus instrumentos tribales. Se trata de espectáculos alternativos, en los que se ofrece la recámara creativa del artista lejos de los potentes focos y la mirada atemorizante de la crítica. Son espectáculos de tú a tú, sin la parafernalia apabullante de los megaconciertos. En Las Dalias están sólo el músico desde su vertiente más sincera y el oyente. Algo que se saborea desde el contacto más cercano, sin artificialidades, la intimidad del creador con su más íntimo comunicante: el público. •

as Dalias is a very special island within the island of Ibiza. Here, everything that happens is exciting, nothing ever disappoints. Apart from the numerous figures from the world of culture, sport and communications who come here every year, the music room and garden often surprise fans with successions of quality live acts that give them a much more direct and intimate contact with their favourite artists than they could ever have in huge stadiums or squares or major venues. There is no pre-selection of styles, the only criterion is quality. Nor is there any preference for nationalities.

Anglo Saxon musicians alternate with the genuinely Spanish, and use the stages of Las Dalias to inaugurate songs or other artistic ventures they have been involved in, away from recording studios and programmed tours. They are almost anonymous

events, improvised, set up with minimum publicity, just for fans.

This has managed to attract to this space international figures like Judas Priest and Nina Hagen, to give just two examples, and Spanish groups like Los Rebeldes, Los Ronaldos, Loquillo, Javier Vargas and Bulldog.

A special visitor is Hilight Tribe, an extraordinarily powerful group from Africa that creates dance music on their tribal instruments. This is alternative entertainment, in which the artists’ creative home is far away from the powerful spotlights and the forbidding scrutiny of critics. These are intimate events lightyears away from the overwhelming paraphernalia of mega-concerts. At Las Dalias there is only the musician in his or her most sincere state, and the listener. This close contact, lack of artifice, intimacy of the creator with his or her most intimate audience is something to be relished. •

La atmósfera que crean las luces cálidas de los puestos, el delicioso aroma de los pastelillos caseros recién hechos y las sonrisas acogedoras de los artesanos provocan que hasta el visitante más escéptico viaje al verdadero espíritu de la Navidad. Todos somos ibicencos

T

odo lo que cabe en una isla está en Ibiza” o “Ibiza es como una caja de bombones surtidos: tiene de todo un poco”. Son frases que definen bastante bien el carácter de este rincón del Mediterráneo. Realmente, es cierto que Ibiza es diversa, plural, multicolor y variopinta, capaz de reunir de todo sobre su escasa extensión geográfica. Semejante riqueza (pues sólo lo diverso es rico y lo uniforme es pobre) no se halla fácilmente en otras partes del planeta. Tenemos la suerte de vivir en un pequeño universo.

Pero sirviendo de soporte a toda esta policromía humana, cultural y lingüística existe un sustrato físico y material, el paisaje, que por su excepcional belleza no admite otra situación que la inmutabilidad ni otro estado que su estricta conservación permanente. El territorio ibicenco sólo es único si se mantiene en su estado natural. Por el contrario, si se tritura interminablemente con chalets, vallados, tendidos eléctricos y carreteras, obtenemos como resultado un suburbio bastante parecido al que podemos encontrar en cualquier parte del mundo. Habremos dejado de ser especiales y únicos.

Puede que esto suene a utopía: pretender una Ibiza multicolor en lo social y lo cultural, pero genuina en lo natural y paisajístico. Y, sin embargo, hay bastantes lugares de la isla donde esto es así.

Estos lugares se encuentran, sobre todo, en la mitad norte de Ibiza. Allí la isla parece haber escapado de sí misma y se reconcilia con su propia alma, viviendo en paz una relación armónica entre lo nuevo y lo eterno.

Hay amplias zonas de Sant Joan, Sant Miquel o Sant Carles en las que encontramos un paisaje prácticamente intacto, al menos para los parámetros actuales. Observamos montañas cubiertas de pinar, campos todavía trabajados en los que pace algún rebaño de ovejas, algunas casas payesas salpicando discretamente esos campos… Efectivamente, el marco físico se asemeja bastante al que nos gustaría para toda la isla. Viendo este lienzo, tendemos a pensar que también las personas, los hombres y las mujeres que pueblan esos campos y esas casas serán payeses de pura cepa, ibicencos de esos que salen en las fotos antiguas, cuyos ancestros nacieron siglos atrás en esas viejas moradas. Y, sin embargo, cuando nos acercamos vemos con sorpresa que de sus encalados muros salen fisonomías que no delatan precisamente rasgos mediterráneos ni ademanes autóctonos. Unos son nórdicos, otros peninsulares, los hay centroeuropeos, pero también norteafricanos o incluso llegados de las Américas.

En un principio, este contraste nos descoloca, pues rompe la imagen que teníamos configurada mentalmente. Y no se trata de visitantes ocasionales que se alojan en estas antiguas fincas, al modo de turistas integrados, sino que son sus moradores permanentes, que a menudo trabajan también la tierra y, en todo caso, son el vecindario habitual de la zona. La tradicional uniformidad cultural y antropológica ha desaparecido también en lugares como Morna, el valle de Sant Vicent, Corona, Atzaró… Niños de aspecto vikingo ya han nacido y crecido jugando entre estos pinares y encaramándose a las paredes payesas; otros de ojos rasgados y aspecto oriental han venido al mundo en el interior de

una casa payesa y en ella situarán siempre sus primeros recuerdos.

Otros chavales de raza negra o, tal vez, de etnias amerindias crecen viendo cada día el azul del cielo ibicenco y sintiéndolo como suyo.

Todos corretean entre algarrobos y aroma de romero. Todos son ibicencos. De mayores, para ellos no habrá manjar más delicioso que un bullit de peix, ni puesta de sol más hermosa que la de sa Conillera, ni estampa más bonita que la de Dalt Vila. Todo ello será suyo también y formará parte de su identidad.

Ahora bien, la identidad también es el paisaje, las montañas, los bosques, la costa con sus acantilados y playas… Cada uno de sus elementos, cada promontorio rocoso, cada campo arado de tierra roja, cada pinar junto a un camino, cada sènia y cada aljub son también habitantes de esta isla. En cierta forma, es como si fueran también seres vivos, sólo que de una longevidad formidable, pues a veces están ahí desde siempre. Por ello, cuando uno de ellos desaparece es como si desapareciera una parte de la anatomía de una persona, o como si se infligiera una lesión en su organismo.

Por desgracia, la piel de Ibiza sabe mucho de heridas desde hace unos años. ¡Cuántas y qué variadas torturas ha sufrido y sufre aún nuestra madre isla!

Pese a lo maltrecho de algunos parajes, no hay persona llegada desde fuera que no elogie sin matices la naturaleza ibicenca. Los acantilados del norte, que van a morir sobre un inmenso mar azul; los fértiles campos de Sant Mateu, Santa Agnès o el Pla Roig de Sant Miquel; los boscosos montes de Morna o las aguas de Platges de Comte han inspirado suficientes emociones y pensamientos de paz y belleza que, si se pudieran vender en dosis, proporcionarían felicidad a millones de personas. ¿Aún hace falta explicar a alguien por qué se ha de preservar todo esto? Es como si hubiera que explicar por qué hace falta respirar.

Es la tierra y el paisaje, el territorio, lo que conforma por encima de todo nuestra identidad. Es el punto de encuentro en torno al cual todos los que vivimos aquí nos reconocemos como habitantes de una patria de belleza sin igual. En una Ibiza por donde han desfilado durante milenios tantas culturas, tantas razas y tantas lenguas, es absurdo tomar a una de ellas, aunque sea la más reciente, por bandera. El único estandarte que vale la pena defender sin temor a equivocarse es el de la conservación de esta joya natural sobre la que cada día caminamos, vivimos y amamos. •

We are all Ibicencos verything that fits on an island is on Ibiza” or “Ibiza is like a box of sweets: it has a bit of everything”. These sentences give a fair definition of the character of this corner of the Mediterranean. It is true that Ibiza is diverse, plural, multi-coloured and varied, able to fit everything together on its small surface. Such wealth (for only diversity is wealth, uniformity is poverty) is not easy to find in other parts of the planet. Here we are lucky enough to live in our own small universe.

But underlying all this human, cultural and linguistic polychromy is a physical and material substrate, the landscape, whose exceptional beauty cries out to remain unchanged and be conserved for ever. Ibiza is only unique if it is kept in its natural state.

If not, if it is interminably criss-crossed with chalets, fences, power lines and roads, the result is a suburb, like any other suburb all over the world. We will have stopped being special and unique.

This may sound like utopia: to demand an Ibiza that is socially and culturally multicoloured, but with its original nature and landscapes. But there are many places on the island where this is so.

These places are mainly in the northern half of Ibiza.

There, the island seems to have escaped from itself, and become reconciled with its soul, living in peace in a harmonious relationship between the new and the eternal.

There are large stretches of Sant Joan, Sant Miquel and Sant Carles where you can find a landscape practically intact, at least by today’s standards. You can see mountains covered with pine woods, fields with the land still worked, in which flocks of sheep

still graze, farm-workers’ houses scattered discretely over these fields…Indeed, the physical setting is rather like what we would like to see all over the island. Viewing this canvas, we might think that the people, the men and women who live on these fields and in those houses will be traditional farm workers, Ibizans, like the figures in old photos, whose ancestors were born centuries before in those ancient dwellings.

But when we get nearer, we can see with surprise that from within their whitewashed walls people appear who do not exactly have Mediterranean features or local gestures. Some are Nordic, others Spanish, there are Central Europeans and also North Africans and even people from the Americas.

At first, this contrast disturbs us, for it breaks with the image that we had mentally formed. These are not occasional visitors staying in these ancient buildings, like integrated tourists: they are their permanent inhabitants, who often also work the land and, in any case, are the normal residents of the area. The traditional cultural and anthropological uniformity has also disappeared in places like Morna, the Valley of Sant Vicent, Corona, Atzaró etc. Children with a Viking appearance have already been born and grown up playing among these pine woods and clambering up the country walls; others with oriental eyes and eastern appearance have come into the world in a country house, and whose earliest memories will be of this place. Other children, with black skin or perhaps native American blood, are growing up under the blue of the Ibizan sky, feeling it belongs to them. All of them

running among carob trees and the aroma of rosemary. All are Ibizan. When they grow up, for them, there will be nothing more delicious than a bullit de peix, or a more beautiful sunset than the one at Sa Conillera, or a prettier sight than Dalt Vila. All this will be theirs as well, and will form part of their identity.

Now identity also lies in the landscape, the mountains, the woods, the coast with its cliffs and beaches. Each of its elements, each rocky promontory, each ploughed field of red earth, each pine wood beside a path, each water wheel and each water tank is also an inhabitant of this island. In a way, it’s as if they were also living beings, except for their formidable longevity, for at times they have been there for ever. This is why when one of them disappears, it is as if part of the anatomy of a person has disappeared, as if an injury has been inflicted on its body. Unfortunately, the skin of Ibiza has been all too familiar with wounds for many years. How many and varied tortures has our mother island undergone and suffered!

come here from abroad has ever failed to eulogise Ibizan nature.

The cliffs of the north that plunge down into an immense blue sea; the fertile fields of Sant Mateu, Santa Agnès or the Pla Roig of Sant Miquel; the woody hills of Morna and the waters of Platges de Comte have inspired so many emotions and thoughts of peace and beauty that if you could sell them in doses, they would bring happiness to millions of people. Do we still have to explain why we want to preserve all this? It’s like having to explain why you need to breathe.

It is the earth and the landscape, the territory that more than anything else makes up our identity. It is the point around which everyone who lives here acknowledges themselves as inhabitants of a mother land of incomparable beauty. In an Ibiza through which down the millenniums so many cultures, so many races and so many languages have passed by that it is absurd to take any one, even the most recent, as our standard. The only standard that it is worth defending unhesitatingly is that of the conservation of this natural jewel on which we walk, live and love every day. •

ant Carles de Peralta ha sido desde siempre un punto de referencia para todos aquellos que, intentando escapar de la vorágine que sacude la zona sur de la isla, buscan la tranquilidad de sus calas de ambiente desenfadado y naturista, y a poder ser, acompañados también de una gastronomía local cuyos licores, pescados y arroces harán las delicias de los paladares más exigentes.

Los viajeros ocasionales también tienen la opción de visitar los reductos de los últimos hijos de las flores, que se exhiben junto con su mercancía en los más auténticos mercadillos hippies, y entre ellos, cómo no, el de Las Dalias, que con un cuarto de siglo a sus espaldas ya es una cita ineludible para todos aquellos que de verdad quieran bucear en el auténtico “espíritu de Ibiza”.

Pero Sant Carles aún tiene más opciones de ocio de las que habitualmente se publicitan en las guías turísticas al uso. Esta pequeña población del norte de la isla cuenta con un amplio e interesante legado histórico, desaprovechado muchas veces por algunas instituciones que no quieren, o no saben, ofrecer una variedad de alternativas posibles a todos aquellos visitantes susceptibles de interesarse por nuestro patrimonio. Las localizaciones descritas a continuación son una buena muestra de las posibilidades de realizar una breve escapada cultural, una suerte de excursión alternativa, apta para todos aquellos que sienten la sana curiosidad de interesarse más profundamente por el lugar que están visitando. •

ant Carles de Peralta has always been a point of reference for everyone wanting to escape the whirlwind of energy that consumes the southern part of the island, seeking the peace of its coves with their relaxing and natural environment, if possible accompanied by local cuisine whose liqueurs, fish and rices so delight even the most discerning palates. Occasional travellers can also choose to visit the redoubts of the remnants of flower power, on show along with their goods in the most genuine hippy street markets, among them Las Dalias, which with a quarter of a century behind it is now a must for anyone who really wants to discover the real “spirit of Ibiza”.

But Sant Carles has many more leisure options than are normally advertised in the tourist guides. This small town on the north

of the island has a large and interesting historic heritage, often ignored by institutions that do not want to, or do not know how to, offer a variety of alternatives to all the visitors who might be interested in our heritage. The places described below are all fine examples of opportunities to take a brief cultural escapade, a sort of alternative excursion, suitable for anyone with a healthy curiosity about the place they are visiting. •

“SES MINES” Y EL “PUIG DE S’ARGENTERA”

Apenas un kilómetro antes de llegar al archiconocido mercadillo de Las Dalias, se elevan las chimeneas (visibles desde la misma carretera) que flanquean el edificio principal de una de las pocas actividades puramente industriales que llegaron a cuajar en la isla. La explotación minera, que extraía plomo y una minúscula cantidad de plata de la galena argentífera del corazón mismo de la tierra, funcionó hasta principios del siglo XX empleando a 200 trabajadores en su época más álgida. Después de varios movimientos especulativos y de un intento de reabrirlas en los años cuarenta, las minas que horadaban todo el Puig de S’Argentera echaron el cierre definitivo en 1952 debido a la subida de nivel del agua subterránea, que hacía imposible la extracción del mineral.

Existe constancia de que los colonos fenicios y cartagineses que se establecieron hace 2.600 años ya explotaban la zona. Buena prueba de ello son los proyectiles de plomo, usados por los temibles honderos mercenarios locales, dragados en el puerto de Ibiza. Posteriormente fueron los romanos quienes tomaron el relevo de la explotación gracias a la inestimable “ayuda” de criminales y esclavos. Y a pesar del ínfimo porcentaje de plata obtenido en relación al plomo, el “argentum” romano es el responsable del nombre actual del lugar: S’Argentera (La argentífera). La zona fue declarada Bien de Interés Cultural en 2003, y, aunque puede visitarse, deben extremarse las precauciones debido a la gran cantidad de derrumbes y pozos de ventilación ocultos en sus alrededores.

Esperemos que el anunciado plan de rehabilitación de la zona con vistas a su explotación, esta vez de carácter exclusivamente turístico, no se haga esperar demasiado. •

Barely a kilometre before arriving at the well-known Las Dalias street market are the chimneys (visible from the road) that flank the main building of one of the few purely industrial activities that have thrived on the island.

Mining, the extraction of lead and a minuscule amount of silver from the silver-bearing galena in the very heart of the earth, in operation until the start of the 20th century employing 200 workers at the height of its prosperity. After several speculative movements and an attempt to reopen them in the nineteen-forties, the mines that ran throughout Puig de S’Argentine closed for good in 1952 due to the rise in the level of underground water that made it impossible to extract the mineral.

It is known that Phoenitian and Carthaginian settlers who arrived here 2,600 years ago had already mined the area. Proof of this are the lead weapons used by the fearful local mercenary slingthrowers, dredged up in the port of Ibiza. Later it was the Romans who continued the mines with invaluable “help” from criminals and slaves. And in spite of the tiny percentage of silver obtained in relation to lead, the Roman “Argentum” is responsible for the current name of the place: S’Argentera.

The area was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2003, and although it can be visited, great care must be taken due to the danger of landslides and the many ventilation wells concealed around it. We hope that the plan to rehabilitate the area for exploitation, this time purely for tourism purposes, will not have too long to wait. •

TORRE DE CAMPANITX (O “D’EN VALLS”) Y EL ISLOTE DE TAGOMAGO

Siguiendo el camino que bordea la costa desde el “Pou des LLeó” en dirección a Cala de Boix se encuentra uno de los mejores ejemplos de torres defensivas que salpican el entramado costero ibicenco. Enclavada justo enfrente del espectacular islote de Tagomago (de incomprensible propiedad privada), la Torre d’en Valls es ahora un mirador excepcional para el visitante, aunque las funciones originales de este bastión defensivo no eran precisamente las mismas de las que podemos disfrutar en la actualidad. Construido en 1763, este monumento de carácter defensivo formaba parte de una complicada red, que a lo largo de toda la isla pretendía mantener sobre aviso a una población constantemente fustigada por los ataques piratas y corsarios provenientes en su mayoría del norte de África. Cuando la guarnición de la torre divisaba cualquier navío sospechoso, activaba un ingenioso sistema de aviso de señales de humo (de día) o grandes hogueras (de noche) dirigidas a la población interior y las otras torres cercanas, que a su vez repetían el mensaje a su vecina inmediata, dando así una eficiente señal de alarma a lo largo de toda la isla en un corto espacio de tiempo. Además, la guarnición también contaba con armamento propio, e incluso con un cañón con el que defenderse de sus posibles asaltantes.

Cabe destacar que el magnífico estado de esta muestra de ingeniería militar es debido a que más bien es una reconstrucción que una restauración, ya que el edificio saltó completamente por los aires en 1864, cuando accidentalmente estalló toda la reserva de pólvora acumulada. La torre de Campanitx (o “d’en Valls”) puede visitarse cualquier día y a cualquier hora, e incluso con un poco de suerte puede accederse a su interior por la escalera que conduce al primer piso, disfrutando así en la terraza superior de una de las mejores vistas de la isla…

Siempre y cuando la puerta esté abierta, claro está. •

Follow the path that runs along the coast from the “Pou des Lleó” towards Cala de Boix and you will come across one of the best examples of the defensive towers that are scattered along the Ibizan coast. Located right opposite the spectacular islet of Tagomago (incomprehensibly in private ownership), the Torre d’en Valls is now an exceptional lookout point for visitors, although the use originally made of this defensive bastion did not exactly match its present purpose. Built in 1763, this defensive monument formed part of a complicated network running all round the island to warn a population that suffered attacks from pirates and corsairs, mainly from the north of Africa. When the tower’s garrison saw a suspect ship, it activated an ingenious system of smoke warning signals (by day) or large bonfires (by night) directed at the population inland and other towers nearby, which in turn repeated the message to their immediate neighbours, spreading an efficient signal of alarm throughout the island in a short space of time. The garrison also had their own armaments, even a canon with which to defend itself against possible assailants. The magnificent state of this example of military engineering is due more to reconstruction than restoration, since the building was completely destroyed in 1864, when the accumulated reserve of gunpowder kept there was accidentally ignited. The Torre de Campanitx (or “d’en Valls”) can be visited any day and at any time, and with a little luck even its interior can be accessed by the stairway that leads to first floor, letting you enjoy from its upper terrace one of the best views on the island, whenever the gate is open. •

“SA FONT DE PERALTA” Y “ES TRULL DE CA N´ANDREU”

En la salida del pueblo, siguiendo la carretera que lleva hasta Cala Llenya, encontraremos la fuente de Peralta, que da nombre a la localidad. Esta discreta obra de mampostería irregular pintada de un llamativo color rojo almangana está situada en el margen izquierdo de la calzada, justo antes del desvío que conduce al mejor ejemplo de casa rural ibicenca (casa pagesa) de carácter público que puede visitarse en la isla. Edificada en el siglo XVII, Ca n´tAndreu está enraizada con los arquetipos arquitectónicos característicos del Mediterráneo Oriental, que debido al aislamiento endémico padecido en Ibiza se mantuvieron inamovibles hasta bien entrado el siglo XX. La “casa pagesa” es la muestra perfecta de la adaptación al medio por parte de la población local.

Un microcosmos en sí mismo que cuenta con todos los elementos necesarios para un autoabastecimiento sostenible.

Buena prueba de ello es el espléndido “trull” (almazara) de la casa, que junto con la era de trillado, la cisterna subterránea que recoge el agua de lluvia, los bancales de cultivo, el horno del pan y toda suerte de herramientas y aperos necesarios para la cría de ganado y una explotación agrícola autosuficiente nos muestran el “modus vivendi” de la sociedad rural ibicenca a lo largo de los siglos. Ca nAndreu puede visitarse todos los días (excepto domingos) de 15.30h a 16.30h durante la estación estival. •

After leaving the village along the road towards Cala Llenya, you will find the Peralta fountain, which gave its name to the town. This modest work of irregular masonry painted with striking red ochre is set on the left side of the road, just before the detour leading to the best example of a rural Ibizan house (casa pagesa) open to the public on the island.

Built in 17th Century, Ca n’Andreu is based on the characteristic architectural archetypes of the Eastern Mediterranean, which due to the endemic isolation of Ibiza over the centuries remained unchanged until well into the 20th Century.

The casa pagesa is perfect example of adaptation to the environment by the local population. A microcosm in itself that has all the elements required for sustainable selfprovision.

Proof of this is the house’s splendid “trull” (oil press), which along with the threshing floor, underground cistern that collects the rain water, terraces for crops, baking oven and all sorts of tools and implements required for breeding livestock and self-sufficient working of the land, shows us the “modus vivendi” of Ibizan rural society down through the centuries. Ca n’Andreu can be visited every day (except Sundays) from 15.30 h to 16.30 h during the summer season. •

“POU DES LLEÓ” Y “SES ERES ROGES”

Si bien es cierto que el visitante ocasional tendrá dificultades para descubrir cualquier vestigio de monumento alguno, las prospecciones arqueológicas de esta preciosa zona costera de Sant Carles demuestran que esté fue un punto clave en una de las industrias más prósperas del mundo antiguo, la producción del tinte púrpura.

A día de hoy puede resultar chocante que el precio al peso del codiciado tinte rivalizara con el del oro, pero si tenemos en cuenta que para conseguir un solo gramo de este producto era necesario sacrificar entre 8.000 y 10.000 pequeñas caracolas marinas (del género múrex) y que eran necesarios 30 gramos de esa sustancia para teñir un solo kilo de tela, la cosa empieza a tener más sentido.

Las teorías respecto al proceso exacto de teñido de las espléndidas telas, que tan sólo lucían las clases dirigentes más pudientes de toda la cultura fenicio-púnica-cartaginesa, son demasiado numerosas y variadas para exponerlas en este artículo, pero merece la pena destacar que esta industria dio nombre a toda una cultura. No en vano, los griegos bautizaron a estos intrépidos comerciantes, que partiendo desde el puerto de Tiro se extendieron a lo largo de todo el Mediterráneo, como fenicios “fenicios”, cuyo significado no es otro que “gente púrpura”.

Aparte de ser un magnífico lugar para pasear y disfrutar de una oferta gastronómica de gran calidad, Ses Eres Rojes (Las Eras Rojas) y es Pou des Lleó (Pozo del León) fueron también en su tiempo un punto de entrada recurrente para todo tipo de invasiones, tanto de carácter histórico clásico, como pudieran ser los “moros” (todo ello recogido en el cancionero popular de la isla) u otras más trágicas y recientes como los tristes episodios acaecidos durante la Guerra Civil. •

Although it is true that visitors may sometimes find it difficult to discover any traces of our monuments, the archaeological sites on this pretty coastal part of Sant Carles show that it was once the centre one of the most prosperous industries in the ancient world, the production of purple dye.

Today it may seem surprising that the price per weight of this much-coveted dye competed with that of gold.

But if we bear in mind that to achieve only a gram of this product between 8,000 and 10,000 small marine snails (of the genus múrex) had to be killed, and that 30 grammes of the substance were needed to dye only a kilogramme of cloth, it begins to make more sense.

The theories on the exact process of dying the splendid cloths, only worn by the most important members of the ruling classes throughout the Phoenitian-Carthaginian-Punic culture are too numerous and varied to cover in this article, but it should be pointed out that this industry gave its name to a whole culture. Not in vain did the Greeks baptise these intrepid traders, who set off from the port of Tyre to sail all over the Mediterranean, as “Phoenitians”, whose meaning is no other than “the purple people”.

Apart from being a magnificent place for a stroll and to enjoy a choice of high quality local dishes, Ses Eres Rojes (the Red Threshing Floors) and Es Pou des Lleó (Well of the Lion) were also in their day a frequent point of entry for all kinds of invasions, both in classical times and in the times of the “moors” (all represented in the popular songs of the island) or other more tragic and recent events, like the sad episodes occurring during the Civil War. •

ACUEDUCTO ROMANO DE “S’ARGAMASSA”

No se sorprenda el lector al leer el destino de nuestra última excursión, ya que si bien es cierto que este poco protegido monumento es, en efecto, un acueducto con todas las de la ley, poco tiene que ver con su colosal homónimo segoviano, aunque sus funciones básicas de transporte de agua potable son las mismas, eso sí. Situado entre Cala Martina y Cala Pada, esta obra de grandes bloques de piedra caliza se extiende a lo largo de trescientos metros y llega a alcanzar los dos metros de altura en su punto más alto, situado en los alrededores del Hotel S’Argamassa.

La función del acueducto era la de abastecer de agua dulce, proveniente de una fuente del interior, a la piscifactoría situada en el extremo opuesto gracias al surco en desnivel que se observa en la parte superior del monumento.

Dicho complejo industrial, ahora destruido irremediablemente, era de origen romano, y se dedicaba a la salazón de pescado y a la fabricación del brebaje o salsa más popular de la época, el célebre gárum, un condimento fabricado con las sobras y vísceras del pescado que previamente fermentadas hacían las delicias de los comensales más sibaritas del imperio. Aunque el acueducto necesita de una urgente tarea de restauración para su correcta conservación en años venideros, se puede visitar perfectamente y pasear a lo largo de casi toda su extensión…

Eso sí, siempre que se respete el entorno de esta excepcional obra de ingeniería romana. •

The reader will not be surprised to read the destination of our last excursion. Although it is true that this poorly preserved monument is, in effect, a real aqueduct, it has little in common with its colossal Segovian equivalent, although its basic function of transporting drinkable water is the same.

Located between Cala Martina and Cala Pada, this work consisting of large blocks of limestone extends over three hundred metres and reaches a height of two metres at its highest point near the Hotel S’Argamassa.

The function of the aqueduct was to supply fresh water from an inland spring to the fish farm located at the other end, thanks to the sloping groove that can be seen in the upper part of the monument.

This industrial complex, now irremediably destroyed, was of Roman origin and was used for salting fish and for the manufacture of the most popular potion or sauce of the era, the famous garum, a seasoning made from the remains and entrails of fish, fermented for the enjoyment of the most sybaritic diners of the Empire. Although the aqueduct needs urgent restoration to ensure its conservation in years to come, it can still be visited and you can stroll along almost the whole length. Of course, you are expected to respect the environment of this exceptional work of Roman engineering. •
