30 Years of the Best of Downtown
O
n June 18, 1989, Los Angeles Downtown News published its first Best of Downtown issue. It was an attempt to celebrate a growing, increasingly dynamic community. Now Downtown News has arrived at its 30th Best of Downtown issue. While the aim remains to celebrate all that people love about the Central City, virtually everything else has changed. Since that first Best of Downtown, the community has endured a couple bitter recessions and experienced an unprecedented development boom that has made it one of the most active investment areas in the country. The skyline has blossomed, and a neighborhood that once catered largely to office workers who immediately went home after 5 p.m. now boasts approximately 70,000 full-time residents. Downtown in 2018 is lively almost 24 hours a day, and is filled with exciting restaurants, nightspots, businesses and entertainment venues.
This issue showcases the best of all that activity. That includes running down the winners of our annual readers poll. It was conducted online over the course of three weeks in the spring, and more than 8,000 people voted (more than we see in some L.A. City Council races). There are winners in more than 130 categories, from Best Restaurant to Best Wine Bar to Best Bike Shop to Best Escape Room. Each winner is followed by a couple other favorites chosen by readers. Additionally, the issue includes some Best of Downtown selections by the editorial staff of Downtown News. What is the Best Food Trend in the area? What was the Best Political Gambit? Who hosts the Best Trivia Night? Read on to find out. Additionally, we look back at that issue from the summer of 1989. The winners of the first Best of Downtown show just how far the community, and the publication itself, have come. Thanks to everyone who voted in the Best of Downtown. BEST DAY-DRINKING PARTIES Weekend Brunches at Resident
The Arts District music venue and beer garden Resident packs the house almost every night with live music. But don’t miss the occasional weekend afternoon parties built around special sonic themes. It’s inventive stuff, with recent happenings including Brunch-182, with power pop sounds, and Daft Brunch, which was exactly what you think it is. There have also been Selena, Depeche Mode and even Grateful Dead-themed editions. The parties feature drink specials, DJs inside and out, an open dance floor and two bars. FYI: Sunday, July 29, brings a noon Star Wars-themed tiki brunch. Admission is free. At 428 S. Hewitt St. or residentdtla.com.—Nicholas Slayton
Caring, community and comfort, that’s what Solheim is all about. Great neighborhood location, in the heart of Eagle Rock. All levels of care on one campus: residential, assisted living, memory care and a CMS 5 star quality-rated health care center.
Tieber’s fall show on the second floor of a Broadway building was intimate, limited to just a couple dozen people a night. That meant every audience member sat within a few feet of the Colombia-born close-up magician, who managed to fool Penn & Teller on their TV show. Indeed, gasps sounded nightly as Tieber unleashed a cascade of how-the-heckdid-he-do-that? card tricks, with queens, five of clubs and more seeming to materialize out of nowhere and jump from spot to spot in the deck. But what truly differentiated See/ Saw from other magic shows was how, over a couple hours, Tieber did more than just trick his audience — with his thoughtful, passionate and personal approach, he allowed people to see magic the way he does — as a legitimate art form.—Jon Regardie
BEST POLITICAL GAMBIT Eric Garcetti’s Mayor-to-President Play
After five years running Los Angeles, does Garcetti have presidential stuff? Some people think yes. Many say no. But give the telegenic, bilingual mayor loads of credit: He’s put himself in the conversation about being the 2020 Democratic nominee. It’s a significant accomplishment, and really, there’s no downside — the worst-case scenario is Garcetti runs, flops, drops out after a primary or two, and then still oversees L.A. until being termed out in 2022. If he acquits himself well and doesn’t win, but a Democrat thumps Trump, then Garcetti has raised his national profile, and maybe positioned himself for a Cabinet seat. To be sure, any run will bring scrutiny and Garcetti could be blasted for L.A.’s homelessness crisis, but he already knows this and has prepared his response. Victory is a long shot, but Garcetti is in the game, and that’s where you DHCS 970000049/ DHCS LICENSE license 970000049/ DSS license 191802082/ COA 321 DSS LCENSE 191802082/ COA 321 start.—Jon Regardie

BEST GOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Banc of California Stadium
Los Angeles’ newest stadium, for fledgling Major League Soccer team the Los Angeles Football Club, is a stunner. The $350 million Banc of California Stadium opened in April, and in addition to traditional seating, the 22,000-seat venue features a huge standing area for LAFC “supporters,” the most passionate, face-painted and loudly cheering fans. Architecture firm Gensler took inspiration from European soccer stadiums when designing the complex. The food options, by the way, include Bludso’s barbecue, Beer Belly and Seoul Sausage, while the proximity to the Expo Line makes getting to the game easy. At 3939 S. Figueroa St. or lafc.com/stadium.—Nicholas Slayton
BEST DOWNTOWN TREND YOU’VE MISSED Professional Wrestling Takes Over
It’s easy to overlook, but this is something of a golden age for professional wrestling in Downtown Los Angeles. You know about the masked Mexican wrestling/burlesque hybrid Lucha VaVoom at the Mayan Theater, but that’s just the start. Independent promoter Pro Wrestling Guerilla stages occasional shows at Broadway’s Globe Theater, including the three-night Battle of Los Angeles coming up in September. Then there’s Lucha Underground, which tapes its televised cards in “The Temple,” the former Union Central Cold Storage facility on Industrial Street in the Arts District. Another option is Bumps and Brewses; expect to see body slams and suplexes — while

BEST EDUCATIONAL STEP LAUSD Hires Austin Beutner
Whitney Houston famously sang “I believe children are our future.” If that is to be the case in the Los Angeles Unified School District, then more than 600,000 kids will need help from Austin Beutner. Is that hyperbole? Yes, but not a lot. The businessman/civic leader/former deputy mayor/ex-L.A. Times publisher became LAUSD Superintendent in May, and instantly became the oft-troubled district’s best shot to stave off a financial catastrophe propelled by climbing pension and healthcare costs, and declining enrollment. Beutner is a visionary with extensive political and business connections. It’ll take everything he has, and probably some luck, to keep educational standards high while navigating a financial tightrope.—Jon Regardie

Downtown has long been a hotspot for Los Angeles food trends; check out the number of Filipino restaurants and hot chicken sandwich stands. Now the Central City is embracing modern Middle Eastern food. The big name is Bavel, an Arts District spot on Mateo Street from Bestia founders Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis. There’s also The Exchange, the ground-floor restaurant in the Freehand Los Angeles hotel, and chef Lionel Piegeard’s Palikao at the base of the Pacific Electric Lofts. Even the old is getting spruced up, as longtime staple Shekarchi has unveiled a new location on Olive Street. Suddenly, fans of hummus, couscous, shawarma and more have a bevy of options, and chefs who are pushing the envelope on old expectations.—Nicholas Slayton

Downtown scored last year when the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA opted to branch out from its Westwood base and stage some shows at the Theatre at Ace Hotel — spring’s four-night 24-Decade History of Popular Music by Taylor Mac (shown here) may go down as the 2018 cultural highlight for the entire city. Fortunately, CAP UCLA earned steady crowds, and is returning to the Broadway venue with another 14 performances. Now Downtown claims avant-garde artistic bookends, with CAP UCLA’s Ace base on the south balanced by REDCAT’s invigorating lineup on the north. Get ready for upcoming Downtown CAP UCLA shows including Fran Lebowitz on Sept. 30 and a 25th anniversary celebration of the variety show UnCabaret on Nov. 18. At 929 S. Broadway or cap. ucla.edu.—Jon Regardie
BEST DODGER SURPRISE Matt Kemp
The downside of the proposed aerial tram that would run from Union Station to Dodger Stadium is that the McCourt family, which nearly ran the ball club into the ground, is playing a leading role. However, the project announced in April secured initial backing from the Dodgers, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Metro, which owns the rail hub. This political buy-in is crucial, and while much needs to be worked out, the concept of avoiding Stadium Way vehicular gridlock and instead floating to the park by gondola is dreamy. If it all works out, the 1.25-mile tram would carry 5,000 riders an hour. Time will tell as to whether this is a homerun project or an epic strikeout.—Jon Regardie

When the Los Angeles Dodgers reacquired nine-year alum Kemp in December from the Atlanta Braves, it was seen as nothing more than a salary swap, and was expected to be followed shortly by another trade, or possibly a pink slip. At the time, Kemp, 33, had failed to live up to his albatross eightyear, $160 million contract, and the lofty potential earned during his 2011 NL MVP runner-up season. Fast forward seven months, and Kemp has returned to form, batting at a .310 clip with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs, good enough to earn a starting slot in his first All-Star Game since 2012. No one saw it coming, but every true blue fan is rejoicing at the front office’s inability to work out a trade, in part because Kemp has helped put the Dodgers in first place in the NL West (at press time). The emergence of the power-hitting Max Muncy is a close second in the surprise realm, but come on, everyone loves a redemption story.—Sean P. Thomas

En Ville Publishing captures daily life and personal stories in various cities. The company turned its eye to Downtown Los Angeles
Groundbreakings are frequent in Downtown, but how often does Steven Spielberg show up to see a shovel hit dirt? Just once, as far as we can tell. On March 14, the director joined Star Wars master George Lucas, Lucas’ wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and a coterie of other prominent figures for the official start of work on the $1 billion-plus Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The 300,000-square-foot project rising on the site of the former L.A. It will also feature Lucas’ trove of props, concept art, old posters and, yes, pieces from Star Wars. Additionally, the sleek, curving, spaceship-like design from Ma Yansong’s MAD Architects will offer theaters, a library and classrooms. Con-

BEST PLACE TO GEEK OUT A Shop Called Quest
Every geek (I’m proudly one) needs a Bat Cave where likeminded types gather. A Shop Called Quest, located on the ground floor of the Arts District’s One Sante Fe apartment complex, is that place in Downtown. Primarily a comic book shop, it provides everything you need to bask in an ever-growing and expanding nerd culture. The walls are lined with various issues of Action Comics and Iron Man, and you can also find manga books and model kits. Want to meet similar-thinking individuals? A Shop Called Quest hosts events including signings and discussion panels. Excelsior! At 300 S. Santa Fe Ave. or ashopcalledquest.com.—Sean P. Thomas
BEST STATE LEGISLATION THAT IMPACTS DOWNTOWN Assembly Bill 390
On Jan. 1, Downtowners were finally able to cross the street without fear. That was the day that AB390 went into effect. The legislation, authored by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, with input from local City Councilman José Huizar, halted the idiotic practice of ticketing pedestrians (often for about $200) for stepping into the crosswalk once the countdown clock had begun, even if there was ample time to reach the other side of the street. Now people can cross as long as they reach the far side before the clock hits 0. Gone is the mean-spirited LAPD practice of Central City jaywalking stings. It took too long, but common sense finally prevailed.—Jon Regardie
BEST NEXT NEIGHBORHOOD Chinatown Adjacent
A long quiet, warehouse-heavy neighborhood east of Chinatown and Los Angeles State Historic Park is changing. Situated between the park and the Los Angeles River, the commu-
nity has attracted celebrated chef David Chang’s restaurant Majordomo (1725 Naud St.); it debuted in January, and big crowds are flocking for the pan-East Asian cuisine. Other arrivals in the area include an L.A. outpost of the New York City cocktail bar Apotheke (1746 N. Spring St.), a spinoff of Highland Park Brewery (1220 N. Spring St.) and the wine bar Oriel (1135 N. Alameda St.). There’s more to come: The Angeleno Wine Company (1646 N. Spring St.) is setting up the first new winery in the city in 100 years, while rock club Baby’s All Right (1729 Naud St.) is slated to open next year. Expect even more projects to follow, and for the flavor of the neighborhood to change forever.—Nicholas Slayton
BEST ARTS DISTRICT TREND Keeping Art in the Community
With the arrival of hundreds of pricey apartments, and businesses including Warner Music Group and Spotify, the Arts District has flipped, and in the coming years the once-sleepy destination for creative types will only get more chichi. Yet all hope is not lost, as the community has seen the arrival of some exciting arts-oriented projects. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles opened on Seventh Street last fall. Both the ICA and the Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles gallery on Third Street, which debuted in 2016, offer high-quality exhibits for free. Then there is artist Kent Twitchell’s “Ed Ruscha Monument,” a mural that was mounted on the side of the American Hotel last year. The Arts District will never again be a cheap destination for working artists, but the arts haven’t entirely left the community.—Jon Regardie
BEST EYESORE ERADICATION The Reagan Building Barricades
For more than eight years, a portion of sidewalk and plaza behind the Ronald Reagan Building on Main Street was blocked off from public use by three rows row of ugly orange and white barricades. The purported reason for the shutdown was a large crack in the ground, and the idea of protecting

pedestrians from a nasty trip-and-fall. Yet many asked, why was the entire plaza off limits, and did it have anything to do with keeping homeless individuals away from the building? State officials maintained it was all about safety, but suddenly in late March, after Los Angeles Downtown News began asking again, two of the three rows of barricades suddenly disappeared. Only the line running over the extended sidewalk crack endures. Now an ugly eyesore is mostly gone. But why these barricades sat around for eight years remains a mystery.—Sean P. Thomas

The inaugural Best of Downtown issue hit newsstands on June 19, 1989.
Some Things Are the Same, But a Lot Has Changed Since 1989 By Jon Regardie he Best Of issue is a staple of newspapers and magazines across the country. Los Angeles Downtown News joined the game on June 19, 1989, publishing an issue that, according to a front-cover description, served as “an eccentric & incomplete compendium of wonderful things to see, eat and do in the Central City.” That issue is something of a time capsule of Downtown Los Angeles. The late ’80s was an intriguing period: Downtown was at the tail end of a development boom (a brutal recession would begin a few years later) that had seen the construction of numerous steel-and-glass skyscrapers on Bunker Hill and the Financial District. Many of the Best Of winners in that first issue served the growing white-collar workforce. Some of those winners are still operating, and also are winners in this 30th Best Of Downtown. Consider Clifton’s on Broadway. This year the woodsy-themed restaurant, which received a top-to-bottom renovation from current owner Andrew Meieran, was voted by readers as the Best Downtown Classic. In 1989 it was named Best Place to Return to a Simpler Age. Some 1989 winners are not honorees in the current issue, but they still stand out. St. Vibiana’s Cathedral was selected as the Best Place to Get Married in Downtown three decades ago, and it remains a popular spot for brides and grooms, even if it has been deconsecrated and now serves as a private events venue. The penthouse of the Oviatt Building was named Best Art Deco for Rent in 1989, and is still unrivaled. In that first issue St. Vincent’s Court off Seventh Street was called the Best Roman Alleyway. Nothing in modern Downtown can compete. The Jewelry District was cited as the Best Place to Bargain in 1989, and that reputation persists in 2018, though Santee Alley is also a contender. In 1989 Casey’s on Grand Avenue was chosen as the Best Place to Hear/Tell a Dirty Joke. It is still in the running, particularly during Casey’s huge annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The then/now comparison reveals a number of changes that show how Downtown has evolved. Chief among these is the Spring Arcade Building; in 1989 it was named Best Place to Buy Cheap Plastic, and in the following decades it func-
T

tioned as a swap meet. Today, however, the property has undergone an immense renovation. The plastic hawkers have been pushed out and modern food purveyors have flooded in. The 2018 Spring Arcade holds businesses including Gelateria Uli (winner of this year’s Best Gelato prize), taqueria Guisados (Best Bang for Your Buck) and the just opened Clayton’s Public House. A number of winners simply closed down over the course of decades. The restaurants Stepps, A Thousand Cranes and Yorkshire Grill all won Best Of prizes in 1989, and all are gone. So is a dessert-themed winner, Robin Rose Ice Cream. Legendary Arts District punk club Al’s Bar was called best Low-Rent Arts Institution, but it departed in 2001. Little Tokyo destination Oiwake was hailed as a hub for karaoke in 1989, but patrons of the destination in Japanese Village Plaza sang their final songs in 2015. Some elements are bittersweet. In 1989 Caravan Book Store was selected as the Best Place to Get Lost Among Musty Old Books. The antiquarian shop in the PacMutual building held that title for decades… until it closed this past February. Looking back, a few categories cause some head scratching. Consider 1989’s Best View From a Urinal, which went to the City Club on Bunker Hill, then on the 54th floor of the north tower of Wells Fargo Center. There are also winners where timing is, well, interesting. Giannini Place at Seventh and Olive streets got the nod for Shiniest Lobby Floor in 1989. It was a lovely space, but then it closed and remained shuttered for well more than a decade under the control of an absentee landlord. The former bank headquarters was finally sold, transformed and returned to life this past January. As the NoMad hotel, the Financial District property once again has plenty of shine.

Another former winner reveals even more of a change. The inaugural Best of Downtown gave the Best Lobby Globe designation to the commanding centerpiece in the First Street entrance of the headquarters of the Los Angeles Times. The globe is beautiful and stately today, but how long it will remain there is in question now that the paper has decamped to El Segundo. regardie@downtownnews.com

If you’ve ever found yourself longing for the days when leg warmers, neon colors and a gratuitous amount of hair spray were in vogue, then 80s Weekend is for you. Hosted by ’80s mega DJ Richard Blade at the Microsoft Theater, the pair of concerts on Friday and Saturday, July 27-28, will bring together some of the finest new wave acts of the era, and you’ll likely be surprised at how many songs you know. The headliners include Adam Ant, Blondie (shown here), Berlin, Thomas Dolby and Marc Almond of Soft Cell. As if you need any other reason to attend, the stage spins! Go ahead and get blinded by science. Doors open each night at 7 p.m. At 777 Chick Hearn Court or microsofttheater.com.
Who knew that body slams, burlesque dancers and comedians make for such a perfect combination? It happens again on Thursday, July 26. The event dubbed Summer Lovin’ features guest Violet Chachki, known for winning the seventh season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Wrestlers, meanwhile, include the sleazy grappler Joey Ryan and the luchadora Dama Fina. If there is one thing we can all use more of, it’s sleep. Part concert, part communal slumber party, Max Richter’s Sleep is apt to lull Downtowners into dreamland during a pair of eight-hour concerts at Grand Park. Starting at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, July 27, and running until 6:30 a.m. the following morning, and then repeating Saturday night at 10:30 p.m., Sleep is one of the longest classical pieces ever written, and will be performed by Richter, alongside soprano Grace Davidson and the American Contemporary Music Ensemble. Unlike most performances, sleeping during the event is encouraged, and concertgoers will get cots rather than seats. Note: Tickets in the main area were sold out at press time, but more may be released. Additionally, there are also some free tickets in another part of the complex, but those are listening-only spots with no sightlines to the stage. At 200 N. Grand Ave., (213) 972-8080 or grandparkla.org.

Have you heard of the Fluxus Movement? It was big during the 1960s and ’70s, and emphasized more of the artistic process than the finished product. Get accustomed to Fluxus on Saturday, July 28, at the latest Summer Happenings at The Broad. This event at the Bunker Hill museum is inspired by German artist Joseph Beuys, and will feature experimental artists such as Baltimore duo Matmos (shown here), who, get this, recently composed an entire album by playing a washing machine on stage. Also on the bill is legendary Krautrock group FaUSt, while EYE spins what is labeled “an imploded DJ set” in the Oculus Hall. The event is 21 and up. At 221 S. Grand Ave., (213) 232-6250 or thebroad.org.
If you haven’t made it to the Ahmanson Theatre to check out The Humans, you have one more chance. The Tony Award winner for Best Play is dropping the curtain for the final time on Sunday, July 29. Stephen Karam’s work is alternately humorous, hopeful and heartbreaking, and director Joe Mantello deftly explores the subtle relationships of a family who come together in New York City for an awkward Thanksgiving dinner. Best of all, the Broadway cast that earned raves is reunited for the Downtown Los Angeles run. Shows this week are Tuesday-Saturday, July 24-28, at 8 p.m., with an additional Saturday matinee at 2 p.m., and Sunday performances at 1 and 6:30 p.m. At 135 N. Grand Ave., (213) 972-7231 or centertheatregroup.org. Send information and possible Don’t Miss List submissions to calendar@downtownnews.com.
