Ace Hotel to Open Jan. 15

T

he finish line is approaching for one of Downtown’s most anticipated projects: The Ace Hotel has begun accepting reservations and will open on Jan. 15, 2014. Officials with the Portland-based chain are transforming the 86-year-old former United Artists Theatre at 929 S. Broadway into a 180-room hotel. According to the hotel’s website, room sizes range from small to terrace suites; the latter are 633 square feet and contain a private terrace. Prices run from $239 to $589 a night.

The building in the heart of a quickly changing area — Swedish retailer Acne and Urban Outfitters will also both soon open nearby stores — will include a 1,600-seat entertainment space in the theater and a restaurant called LA Chapter, said spokesman Henry Lyon. There will also be a rooftop bar, he said. The Downtown spot will be the fifth Ace in the United States, after New York, Seattle, Portland and Palm Springs. The theater was built in 1927 by United Artists founders D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford.

Huizar Needs a ‘Streetcar Austin Beutner’ if Project Is to Succeed

I

n January 2008, 14th District City Councilman José Huizar brought hundreds of stakeholders together in the Los Angeles Theatre to announce his Bringing Back Broadway initiative. The ambitious 10-year effort aimed to revive the once storied street with new restaurants, shops, office space, better sidewalks and, most thrillingly, a streetcar.

Nearly six years later, Huizar has far exceeded expectations in terms of recruiting businesses to Broadway.

Stores such as Ross Dress for Less and the Umami restaurant have lured people who didn’t come here before, and the imminent openings of the hip Ace Hotel in the former United Artists Theatre building and an Urban Outfitters in the old Rialto Theatre stand to deliver the type of evening activity and momentum that has not been seen on Broadway for decades. Huizar’s success in this sector is admirable, and he and his team deserve immense credit.

However, the good work accomplished so far runs the risk of being overshadowed by serious problems with the jewel in the crown of the Broadway revival: The Los Angeles Streetcar, as it is dubbed, appears to be years away from a groundbreaking, much less an opening. Worse, even six years into the project no one has a realistic grasp as to how much it will cost or how it will be funded.

At a time when we would have hoped to see a completion date in the near future, Huizar instead is in the unenviable position of publicly doubting a city-prepared report about the project’s potential price tag. This all occurs as a key hire for the effort has not been made and a long-aimed-for deadline application for federal funds was skipped, apparently because the project is not far enough along.

We could understand some of these shortcomings if the project were in the early going, but it’s not. In fact, these questions arise a year after the streetcar team launched a major public outreach campaign and persuaded Downtown residents to tax area property owners up to $85 million for the project.

We like the idea of the streetcar, and still believe that it could be a valuable addition to life, business and circulation in Downtown, running from L.A. Live to the Civic Center with a main spine on Broadway. However, this is a project that, to use a cliché, runs the risk of going off its tracks.

It is hard to see the development coming to fruition unless serious changes are made.

Thus, it is time for Huizar to step back, take a hard look at everything that has occurred to date, and honestly assess what is working and where the problems lie, because clearly there are problems. If Huizar wants a Downtown streetcar to open before he is termed out in 2019 (assuming he is re-elected in 2015), then he must recognize that he needs management help.

Making this choice will be difficult and almost certainly will cause division with some of those long affiliated with the project. However, we think Huizar should look for a streetcar version of Austin Beutner, the successful busi-

nessman who came into former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s office in 2010 and, for about 16 months (until he left to begin an aborted campaign for mayor), provided a clear sense of business acumen, professional responsibility and accountability.

Huizar’s project needs to regain the public’s trust. That will require the 2014 version of a “Streetcar Beutner,” someone with vast experience and true problem-solving skills who will be given the authority to make changes, some of them dramatic.

The clearest example of trouble materialized over the past year.

At this time in 2012, project proponents were feverishly reaching out to those who live within a few blocks of the proposed route, urging them to approve a plan to tax area property owners up to the aforementioned $85 million. Time and again the advocates stated that $62.5 million would come from local stakeholders — with the extra $22.5 million dedicated to administrative and other costs — and that $62.5 million would come from government funding. The streetcar was identified as a $125 million project. No higher figure was offered.

Area residents, believing in the pitch and the project, resoundingly approved the tax.

However, in September of this year a city analysis found that the cost of moving utilities during construction had not been adequately considered in the original estimate, and that the project instead would cost from $232.2 million to $327.8 million. That means, in a best-case scenario, the price tag will be more than $100 million over what was originally announced.

It is hard to believe that the streetcar team could have missed the mark by so much when asking residents to pass a tax. If they were truly uncertain about the price, then they should have waited before forcing a vote. However, when you are $100 million-$200 million off a project of this size, then something is wrong, whether it is a case of being misleading or being uninformed. Neither one is good, and the miscue raises doubts as to whether current promises regarding the streetcar can be trusted.

Huizar’s team has also taken the wrong approach since the city report came out, challenging it and asserting that the price will be lower. This sparks questions in the minds of area residents and workers: This is a city report, not one cooked up by fierce oppo-

nents of the plan. Huizar is part of the city, so it rings strange when he expresses such strong doubt.

Huizar should use the report as a tool and recognize that the project could indeed cost that much. The goal should be to comprehend the ceiling, then find experienced individuals who can bring the price down.

There are other problems that spark questions of trust, among them the timeline for seeking federal funding.

Again, one needs to go back a year to the campaign for a property tax. When streetcar advocates were reaching out, the message was that securing the public component would allow the streetcar team to apply for a Federal Small Starts grant in 2013. However, project officials missed a Sept. 30 application deadline to be included in the president’s federal budget. An official with a streetcar consultant said this happened because the project is not far enough along in its environmental review.

How that could be the case after six years is mindboggling. So is the fact that an independent project manager has not been hired.

We understand that this isn’t easy. Huizar has aimed big, and Downtown is full of public- and private-sector developments that went far over budget and took years longer to build than anticipated. Urban transportation projects are notoriously difficult.

However, the streetcar is a special case in large part because its proponents already went to the public with hat in hand. In asking for and receiving the promise of $85 million, they were also asking for a great deal of trust. Now it is fair to question whether those who asked for the trust are being forthcoming.

This is a difficult time for the streetcar project, but it does not have to be fatal. The key is for Huizar to recognize that mistakes have been made, to own them, and to identify and install the person or team who can get the project moving. Don’t pretend a problem does not exist.

If Huizar operates in an intelligent and timely manner, then the streetcar could still become the jewel of Broadway. If he doesn’t, the opportunity could be squandered, and people will have to continue to get around on foot or by car. It would be a tremendous waste of a golden opportunity.

The Taste of a Modern Factory At Arts District Restaurant, Longtime Friends Put Their Spin on Italian Food

By Eddie Kim he Factory Kitchen, an Arts District restaurant that opened Oct. 31, offers a dish diners aren’t likely to find anywhere else in Los Angeles.

The dish, focaccina calda di Recco al formaggio, reveals nothing to non-Italian speakers.

Made by layering a young cheese called crescenza between two ethereal sheets of dough, then baking it fast in a roaring oven, the focaccina arrives blistered and crisp and dripping with richness.

Not only is it something that most customers won’t recognize, it’s a dish that Factory Kitchen owner Matteo Ferdinandi wasn’t aware of until the restaurant at 1300 Factory Place was deep in the planning stage.

“Who knew about this? I didn’t,” Ferdinandi said last week during a visit to the 2,960-squarefoot space. “It’s literally from the town of Recco, and people outside of the area don’t make it.”

The focaccina is the brainchild of Ferdinandi’s old friend and Factory Kitchen chef Angelo Auriana, who helms the open kitchen. Their partnership has been a long time coming, Ferdinandi said, as they met in the mid-’90s and kept in touch. Today, the focaccina sums up their philosophy for the restaurant: to serve food rooted in the local traditions of Italian cuisine, a sort of flashback to the dishes that each explored independently as young men with big dreams of working in America.

Ferdinandi grew up in Venice, while Auriana was raised in the city of Bergamo, just northeast of Milan. The duo today joke that they rely on each other to discover the vastly different types of Italian cuisine in their hometowns.

“Matteo came to me to eat rabbit and polenta, and I went to Venice for seafood risotto and fried calamari,” Auriana said.

Notable Spot The Factory Kitchen sits on a narrow road off Alameda Street, tucked into the bottom floor of the residential Factory Place Arts Complex. The restaurant serves dinner seven days a week. Lunch service, which runs between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., begins on Monday, Nov. 18.

Inside, wooden tables and red leather chairs splay out around the building’s stout concrete columns. An open kitchen and pasta station, where cooks roll out and cut dough into delicate shapes, offers diners a behind-the-scenes look into their meals.

The industrial setting is reminiscent of Bestia, the hard-to-find Italian establishment that opened in late 2012 in the 2121 Lofts complex off Seventh Street. Despite its tricky location, Bestia quickly became one of the hardest reservations not just in Downtown, but in all of Los Angeles.

said he and Auriana didn’t arrive just because of the community’s quick growth. Instead, there were more practical considerations.

“There are probably more attractive parts of this city to open a restaurant. But unfortunate-

ly, rents are becoming prohibitive,” Ferdinandi said. “A concept like The Factory Kitchen, where I want people to be comfortable with the food and the cost, is not something you can do in Continued on page 6

Ferdinandi settled on the location in February, and he was happy that Auriana saw the appeal when he visited the space in the summer.

They weren’t the first to see it as a potential restaurant location. Walter Manzke had been working on it as a space for his restaurant, Republique. Manzke instead ended up going to the old Campanile location in Mid-City (it debuts next week), opening the door for The Factory Kitchen to take its place.

To the U.S. Just as they came from different cities, Ferdinandi and Auriana had different paths to the restaurant industry in the United States.

Auriana left Italy in 1985 for a cooking career in the U.S., having graduated from the prestigious San Pellegrino hotel school and worked in top kitchens across the country. Ferdinandi, who was born into a family of bakers and cooks, left Italy the following year. He moved to London to study English, with hopes of eventually pursuing architecture.

Instead, Ferdinandi fell into the food business thanks to summer work in restaurant kitchens and as a waiter. He moved to New York and eventually worked as a general manager for legendary restaurateur Pino Luongo. In 2003 he joined Wolfgang Puck’s team as general manager of Spago Las Vegas. It was, as Ferdinandi puts it, “the time of my life.”

Ferdinandi came to L.A. to open Puck’s CUT and Sidebar concept at the Beverly Wilshire, then moved on to start his own cafe-retail establishment, Froma on Melrose. Most recently, he partnered with acclaimed Italian chef Celestino Drago to open Downtown’s Drago Centro in 2008.

A few years ago, Ferdinandi began thinking of opening his own restaurant. He saw an opportunity to work with Auriana, who had garnered acclaim for his 18-year stint running the kitchen at Valentino and was working as executive chef at San Francisco’s Farina.

As the old friends talked and planned, the vision for The Factory Kitchen became clear.

“It’s like watching a movie where you know what’s coming,” Auriana said of his meetings with Ferdinandi. “You look at each other and you just know how it’s going to happen.”

Fine Dining, Revised One of the most important lessons Ferdinandi took away from his mentor Puck was that a restaurant has to be accessible. Factory Kitchen’s menu reflects that. Currently, all pastas and starters come in under $20, while meat or seafood entrees range in the mid- to high-$20s.

The dishes mirror Auriana’s taste for simple, traditional food that honors locality. The mandilli di seta, or “handkerchief” pasta with a pesto sauce in the original style of Liguria, seems plain on the plate, yet a bite floods the mouth with the electric flavor of fresh basil and almonds, grounded by the silky wheat sweetness of the pasta. The pesto boasts such a rich texture that one would be forgiven for thinking Auriana slipped a pat of butter into it.

egant approach to cooking. He also utilizes some clever techniques, as revealed in the 24-month aged prosciutto served with milky stracciatella cheese. The menu description includes “lightly fried sage dough,” which brings to mind little puffs of bread to enjoy with the meat and cheese. Instead, the prosciutto and cheese arrive perched on top of a plate-sized hollow pillow of crispy dough. It deflates gently as you tear into it, perfuming the air with the autumnal scent of sage.

Italian food has always been a bit romantic and comforting. The Factory Kitchen pays tribute to that, but it’s also far more personal. The

restaurant is a passion project for Ferdinandi and Auriana, one in which the food quite literally connects them to their heritage and friendship.

“The menu is basically a journey through the memories of Matteo and I before we came to the U.S. Life sometimes takes you full circle,” Auriana said. “It’s a rebirth for us because we’re finally together, working side by side to re-create something we remember as true Italian food.”

What’s for Sale: A Former Towel Factory in Skid Row

By Donna Evans n the column “What’s for Sale,” Los Angeles Downtown News looks at everything from condominiums to multi-family buildings to vacant lots now on the market. We hope that regular snapshots of individual properties will make for a wide-ranging survey of the overall state of Downtown real estate.

This week, the focus is on a building that sits on approximately three-fifths or an acre in Skid Row. The list price is $6.3 million.

The Property: The owners of the 119,556square-foot edifice at 421 E. Sixth St. are looking to convert the building to market rate or low-income housing, said CBRE senior vice president Michael Shustak, who has the listing.

Though he declined to identify the brother and sister who own the structure known as the City Towel Supply Company, Shustak said the building has been in the family since the 1930s.

History Lesson: The owners of the City Towel Supply Company, an industrial cleaning business, built the six-story edifice on the current plot in 1923, and purchased the three-story building next door (it had been completed two years before). An undated black and white photo shows the Royal Wholesale Cigar Company occupied a ground-floor space on the north-west corner of the intersection. The cleaning company eventually went bankrupt, Shustak said.

Where It’s At: The building is in the middle of Skid Row, across the street from the Midnight Mission and the Weingart Center. It’s a fourblock walk from several eateries on Main Street.

Occupancy: The property is currently 58.5% occupied. The building houses mostly smallitem manufacturing businesses, including one that makes clapboards, those things on a movie set that clap shut after the director yells “Action!” Another of the 20 or so tenants is an audiovisual repair shop. Several areas have been built out for offices.

Prime Candidate: Because of its proximity to multiple missions, the Weingart Foundation and other services for low-income and homeless individuals, Shustak said the property would be a perfect candidate for subsidized housing. He noted that the $28 million Gateways Apartments opened around the corner, at Fifth and San Pedro streets on Nov. 7. Additionally, the building may qualify for historic tax credits.

Adaptive Reuse: The building’s high ceilings and a lack of interior bearing walls make it attractive for adaptive reuse conversion, Shustak said.

That’s the process in which aged, usually defunct buildings were reborn as modern housing.

parable properties in the vicinity include the Case Hotel at 1106 S. Broadway, which is in escrow for $13.5 million. A building at 1060 S. Broadway, which measures 833,600 square feet, is nearing a deal for the asking price of $10 million. The United Artists Theatre, which is 140,000 square feet, sold for $11 million; the building at 929 S. Broadway will open as the Ace Hotel in January 2014.

Back in April 2012, the 78,500-square-foot Desmond Building, at 425 W. 11th St., sold for $16.25 million. Of course, those properties might fetch higher prices considering they are closer to (or in) South Park, not the heart of Skid Row.

Who’s the Buyer?: While Shustak believes the property would be best suited for housing, he noted that another option would be for creative office space. Environmental, fashion and architecture firms have been trending toward creative spaces more than traditional office settings, Shustak noted. Several clients have indicated interest in that possible use.

Since then, proprietors Coly Den Haan and Rachel Thomas have been planning the return of The Must to Downtown. Now, finally, they are putting the finishing touches on the effort.

ment complex The Jefferies by the end of this month or the first week of December.

They are awaiting final inspections from the city, but said they are otherwise ready to go.

The 2,800-square-foot space at Winston and Los Angeles streets will be significantly larger than the original bar, and will feature new amenities. It will include a patio, as well as a private tasting room in the basement wine cellar.

By Donna Evans new business at the corner of Fifth and Main streets has customers thrusting, shimmying, popping and sweating. While this is behavior normally done in private, in this case it is visible to anyone wandering through the Historic Core.

The dance/exercise facility Your Neighborhood Studio opened its Downtown doors on Oct. 17, the Central City sister to a Culver City location founded by Denise Mazan in 2006. The 43-year-old Leimert Park resident, who runs the urban dance studio with her husband, Steve Mazan, said the success of the Westside spot prompted her to consider a second space.

In October 2012, Mazan got in touch with Nina Decker, the assistant director of economic development for the Downtown Center Business Improvement District. Decker suggested the Historic Core.

Mazan looked at several places before signing a five-year lease for a groundfloor spot in the 100-year-old Rosslyn Lofts. The 1,550-square-foot facility is framed by windows, with light pouring in through the swooping words “love dance” etched onto the frosted panes.

Mazan found the space on a fluke: Her car had been towed and while heading out to fetch her vehicle, she saw a “For Lease” sign in the window.

Mazan liked Downtown for the opportunities it presented. She noted that while the area’s renaissance is delivering more stores and restaurants, she saw a niche for classes where people can shake their booty for exercise and personal enjoyment.

“I wanted a place for people regardless of their level, a place where you can have fun and just let the music move you,” she said.

One recent evening, as the thumping bass of Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” bounced off the maple wood floor and filtered into the cool night air during a class dubbed “urban diva hop,” instructor Karma Raines urged the group of six women to “get outside” of their heads and let their bodies flow. Some of them nailed it, while others

struggled with the isolations and groovestyle movements. That’s just fine with Raines, a choreographer, dancer and creative director for music videos.

“For me, the class is all about empowering women. I want them to feel comfortable and have fun,” said Raines, 29.

Inhibitions at the Door With its location in a transitioning neighborhood, Your Neighborhood Studio has attracted a few curious characters. Mazan remembers one man, speaking over the jet-engine volume of the music, asking if she sells marijuana, as he thought it was a dispensary. Another man stood in front of the glass while class was underway, brushing his teeth for an hour.

Those are isolated incidents, Mazan said, noting that the BID security patrol pedals by on a regular basis.

Usually the entertainment is confined to what happens inside. Classes include basic ballet, burlesque, and yoga booty ballet, a mixture of meditation with a cardiovascular component. There’s also West African dance, where live drumming accompanies the choreography, and sass funk, which combines hip-hop moves with what Mazan describes as “a funky, feminine touch.”

Another option is definitely pitched toward older crowds: strip hop. The website advises participants to “leave your inhibitions at the door and your sweat on the floor.”

Classes, which usually last an hour, are held every day except Friday. Weekday sessions start around 5 p.m. and run through 10 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays there are up to four morning classes that run through 1 p.m. No children’s classes are offered, though Mazan said that could change if she sees a demand.

Singles sessions are $15; there is a discount if you buy 10 or 20 classes.

Mazan’s love of dance can be traced to her adolescent adoration of Michael Jackson. She was 13 when Thriller blasted across the airwaves, though her family in Ukiah didn’t have money to send her to dance class. It wasn’t until a community

college jazz class that she had the opportunity to participate in an organized, choreographed program.

From there she fell into dance. She oversaw 300 group exercise classes in and around Los Angeles while working for Bodies in Motion. The classes she liked most were hip-hop.

Decker, of the DCBID, said that although communities need obvious amenities such as laundromats and hardware stores, other attractions are important for a diverse residential base. Having Downtown’s first dance studio on Fifth Street, an area continually in the midst of a transformation, is a great opportunity for area denizens, she said.

While most classes are currently fairly small, Mazan isn’t worried. In Downtown, where people are always out walking dogs or strolling to bars and restaurants, she predicts attendance will grow quickly.

That’s how it began in Culver City, where she has gone from one studio to three.

And, she noted, she didn’t have nearly as many curious passersby.

Gearing Up to Show Off L.A. Auto Show Returns, Filling the Convention Center With More Than 1,000 Vehicles

By Eddie Kim espite the ever-growing influence of transit-oriented development, smart urban design and bicycle and pedestrian traffic, Los Angeles has always had a love affair with the automobile.

For many car fanatics, nothing captures that romance quite like stepping into the annual L.A. Auto Show, held at the Convention Center in Downtown.

The event, which opens on Friday, Nov. 22, transforms the mammoth complex into a sparkling mecca of all things auto, displaying more than 1,000 cars from around the world. It’s a full sensory experience, with glitzy, custom-built car displays pumping out music and bright lights to attract potential drivers like moths to a flame.

The Auto Show, which runs through Dec. 1, offers up a seemingly endless buffet of new models from domestic and foreign automakers. Highlights this year include the 23 world debuts, among them Porsche’s unveiling of the first generation of its Macan compact SUV, along with two versions of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet. Not to be outdone, Mercedes Benz is debuting its fire-breathing, V-12 flagship S65 AMG sedan. Then there’s the BMW 4-Series convertible, Kia’s K900 and a yet-unrevealed car from Mini that’s rumored to be the next-gen Mini Cooper.

“Autobiography Black Edition” version of the Range Rover to the Audi A3 Cabriolet to the stunning BMW i8 hybrid sports car, which looks like it was stolen off the set of the sci-fi thriller Minority Report.

In addition to the vehicles, there will be a section devoted entirely to aftermarket and tuning products, as well as a showcase of tricked-out cars owned by celebrities.

Technology is getting a new platform this year, too: The Connected Car Expo, which takes place Nov. 19-21 before the official show, features a slate of events and speakers that will explore the use of new technology in cars. Other pre-Auto Show events include the MPG Motoring Invitational, which will feature 60 cars deemed “unique, historic and significant,” and a charity preview night benefiting CASA/LA, which helps foster children in the city.

Scheduling Conflicts The L.A. Auto Show had humble beginnings.

It premiered in 1907, and though only 99 cars were on display at Morley’s Skating Rink in Downtown, it was a grand achievement — the L.A. Auto Show was the first on the West Coast and the biggest exhibition west of Chicago.

While local buffs had big dreams, for many years the event stood in the shadow of the most prestigious auto exhibitions, including Detroit’s North American International Auto Show and Germany’s renowned Frankfurt Motor Show, still the largest in the world. Part of

the problem was that the L.A. event took place in January — around the same time as the Detroit show. This presented many automakers with a tough choice.

“Up until 2006, the L.A. dates conflicted a bit with Detroit’s, so the car companies didn’t choose L.A. for big debuts, as it was one or the other,” said Brendan Flynn, the L.A. Auto Show’s senior director of marketing and communications. “L.A. should’ve been one of the biggest shows in the U.S., but this stunted its growth a bit.”

A change to November boosted industry interest in the L.A. show considerably, Flynn said. So have two auto trends rooted in the city: the “green” vehicle movement and in-

credible demand for luxury and performance vehicles.

California is the biggest market for both hybrid and electric vehicles in the country, and Southern California is the most dominant market for performance and luxury vehicles in the United States, Flynn said. Porsche sells 17% of its cars in L.A., and the world’s largest Rolls Royce dealership sits in Beverly Hills.

This helps explain why automakers are increasingly viewing Los Angeles and its show as a tastemaker.

“The number of debuts has increased significantly, and the significance of those debuts is greater,” Flynn said. “Previously, you would never see a brand-new vehicle like the [Porsche] Ma-

The Amazing Races A Glimpse at L.A.’s Forgotten Auto Track Era

By Jon Regardie veryone knows about Los Angeles’ car culture. What few are aware of is that, long before the automobile took over, a young city was filled with racetracks.

This golden era of automotive contests is revealed in Where They Raced, a new documentary directed and produced by Harry Pallenberg. The film chronicles the rise and eventual disappearance of the tracks, including one around where the Coliseum now stands.

Pallenberg, a veteran documentary maker and longtime producer for late public television host Huell Howser, will have a booth for the film at the Los Angeles Auto Show. He spoke about the movie.

Los Angeles Downtown News: So there was a racetrack where the Coliseum is?

Harry Pallenberg: Literally circling where the Coliseum stands was a racetrack. First it was a horse track, then they started running cars. It was called Agriculture Park. The first car races were held there in 1903, but by 1908 or ’09 racing had moved south to Slauson and Central at a track called Ascot. The Coliseum area racing stopped in part because of people’s dislike of the gambling and drinking associated with auto racing. And there was a college across the street, USC. Q: What kinds of cars raced?

A: In the 1920s they were open-wheeled vehicles,

with no seatbelts and no sides of the car. It took a lot of balls to get in one of these. And they were going over 120 miles an hour.

Q: How did Where They Raced come about?

A: It started in 2002. We did a “California’s Gold” with Huell Howser on one of the tracks, in Corona, with Harold Osmer, who wrote a book called Where They Raced. I’ve been working on this since about 2010. Osmer is the co-writer and the on-camera host.

Q: How come no one knows about this?

A: I think a lot of people know it without knowing it. They know L.A. is the car capital of the world. The National Hot Rod Association started here. But a lot of the tracks went away by the ’50s.

Annual Purple and Gold ‘All-Access’ Event Will Honor Jerry Buss

By Jon Regardie athryn Schloessman has witnessed a number of memorable moments at the Lakers All-Access event at Staples Center. There was the year Phil Jackson spoke in-depth with Jerry West. There was the time guard Derek Fisher walked the crowd of about 500 people through his playoff game-winning shot, with 0.4 seconds left, against the San Antonio Spurs. There was the day Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wowed the crowd.

Schloessman, the president of the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission, which stages Lakers All-Access, expects this week’s event to have a similar highlight, though it may carry a tinge of melancholy: A number of current and former players will remember the team’s beloved late owner, Dr. Jerry Buss.

“We’ll do a video tribute to start and then we’ll go to past players to say what is the Buss magic, what made it so great?” said Schloessman. “We’ll have Kurt Rambis, Robert Horry, James Worthy. And Jeannie Buss will be there, which is so special.”

The 10th annual event, which begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, is a fundraiser for nonprofits the Lakers Youth Foundation and the LASEC. Individual tickets start at $550.

Lakers All-Access, said Schloessman, began as an effort to follow up on the LASEC’s similar footballthemed event, then called NFL 101. However, there was an immediate difference: While the NFL gave its blessing, there was no team in the city. By contrast, Schloessman was able to partner with Jeannie Buss, a longtime friend, to get support from the Lakers’ organization. She pulled in her beau, the Lakers coach.

The storeowner chased after and tackled the suspect. The owner called for help, officers arrived on scene and arrested the suspect on suspicion of robbery.

Inside Job?: A man used a key to enter Candolyn Salon at 350 S. Grand Ave., at the Cal Plaza Watercourt, after business hours on Nov. 6. He logged onto a computer to obtain the password to open the register and stole an undisclosed amount of money. Only employees have the password. Security footage shows a man believed to be an employee’s boyfriend taking the money. The employee was confronted, but split before police arrived.

Laptop Insecurity: A woman who locked the door to her apartment in the 400 block of Savoy Street near Chinatown at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7 returned to her home at 6 p.m. to find the door pried open. Her apartment had been ransacked and her laptop was missing.

AROUND TOWN, 2 below street level, the lowest point of the project, said Sean Rossall, a spokesman for the $1 billion development on the northwest corner of Seventh and Figueroa streets. Workers have been removing the old hotel’s parking levels and excavating down to where the new ones will go since finishing the razing of the building in July. AC Martin is overseeing the project, which is slated to be the tallest building west of the Mississippi once finished. An official groundbreaking on the 71-story structure with 900 hotel rooms and 400,000 square feet of office space is slated for December or early 2014.

The building is scheduled to be complete in December 2016 and open early the following year. Wednesday’s “bottoming out” ceremony will take place at the site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Woman Shot by Police Arrested, Investigation Continues

he woman shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers at the St. George Hotel in Downtown last month has been arrested, but remains at County USC Medical Center, authorities said. The investigation continues into the Oct. 11 shooting of Evonne Mitchell, a resident of the permanent supportive housing facility at 115 E. Third St., and may take another six to eight months, said LAPD Commander Andrew Smith. He would not say where she was shot or how many gunshot wounds Mitchell suffered.

Police received a disturbance call at 1:25 p.m.

When officers arrived, they opened Mitchell’s door, which was ajar, and she threw a mirror at

them, according to a post on the LAPD’s official blog. Mitchell then allegedly grabbed a knife and began to walk toward the officers, who told her to drop the weapon. She didn’t, and was shot, Smith said. The officer who fired the shot or shots that hit her was Samuel Blanco, he added. Police arrested Mitchell on suspicion of exhibiting a deadly weapon with intent to resist a police officer. The district attorney filed two felony counts against Mitchell. The incident marks the third officer-involved shooting in Central Division this year, Smith said. The department’s Force Investigation Division is handling the investigation.

to modernize and increase productivity of the Los Angeles Convention Center and bring the NFL back to Los Angeles,” said Ted Fikre, AEG’s vice chairman and chief legal and development officer. AEG has said it would not move forward on construction until a deal with an NFL team is signed. The company is also scheduled to become the operator of the Convention Center.

Public Meetings Coming for Pershing Square Redesign

O

ne of the most anticipated projects in Downtown is the potential redesign of Pershing Square. This week, area residents and workers can learn the latest and offer their opinions on what should happen in the park in the heart of the Financial District. Fourteenth District City Councilman José Huizar is hosting three public meetings with the Pershing Square Task Force to get input on how the park should be improved. The first is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 a.m. at Perch restaurant, at 448 S. Hill St.; the second is slated for Nov. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel at 506 S. Grand Ave.; the final meeting will take place Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Pacific Room on 526 W. Sixth St. More meetings focusing on potential programming and design will take place in January and March. Though Huizar and many Downtown residents want changes to come to Pershing Square, it is unclear where the money will come from. Anschutz Entertainment Group in February pledged $700,000 in seed money for improvements. That money, however, was contingent on AEG’s plans for a Downtown NFL stadium, the future of which has been thrown into question.

Although The Must will just serve dinner at first, Thomas and Den Haan hope to start weekday lunch and weekend brunch service after one or two months.

Leadership Committee members said the pedestrian bridge is vital for safety and traffic flow improvement. She noted that corporate sponsors signed on early, despite off-season questions about the fate of the team.

“People say what about the Clippers, but no, it’s still about the Lakers,” Schloessman said. “Even in this kind of season, people are still excited to come.”

The original Must was shuttered in July 2010 after a dispute with property partners over leasing rights. The space at Fifth and Spring streets was sold, and one morning Den Haan and Thomas arrived at their business to find the doors locked and their property, including about $50,000 worth of alcohol, moved into storage.

Now, two-and-a-half years later, they’re enthused about the future.

“We’ve built our dream bar, basically,” said Den Haan.

The Regional Connector is a 1.9-mile underground light rail route that, when completed, will provide a one-seat, one-fare ride for commuters from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Travelers will no longer need to transfer between rail lines for major east/west and north/south trips. It is scheduled to open in 2020.

In addition to Second and Hope, stations will be at Second Street and Broadway and First Street and Central Avenue.

Tickets to Glide Downtown Gets Ready for Another Warm Winter of Outdoor Skating on Two Rinks

By Donna Evans os Angeles is known for its sunshine and outdoor entertainment year round. What it is not generally known for is ice skating.

However, ice skating has become a big attraction in Downtown. So it is this year, and once again, the Central City will boast not one, but two al fresco ice rinks.

The Downtown on Ice facility returned to Pershing Square on Thursday, Nov. 14, and is bigger than ever. On Nov. 30 it will be joined by the L.A. Kings Holiday Ice rink, which sets up a spread of frozen water in Nokia Plaza at L.A. Live.

Louise Capone, senior recreation director for Pershing Square, said the 16th installment of the Downtown Los Angeles tradition will likely mean less waiting for skaters ready to swirl, twirl and wobble around the rink in the heart of the Financial District. The skating area is now 60 feet by 100 feet, compared to last year’s 50by-90 dimension. The run extends through Jan. 20, 2014.

That’s not the only change. Attendees this year don’t have to worry about trekking into Downtown only to be turned away because the session is sold out: Tickets are now available online, Capone said.

Additionally, holiday hours have been extended, with the rink operating from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on Dec. 21-30.

While the increased hours and long run offer entertainment opportunities, they also provide challenges. For example, as children and adults glide around the ice in the shadow of Downtown’s skyscrapers, the only thing missing from the winter wonderland will be actual winter weather: The temperature last Thursday hit 91 degrees.

Which begs the question: How do they keep the ice frozen?

“I have to put in a call to Santa’s elves very early in the year,” said Capone. “Then you get on a list, and when everyone is asleep, fairies sprinkle magic dust on the ice so it doesn’t melt.”

OK, the truth isn’t nearly as much fun. But it is quite a feat, said Willy Bietak of Willy Bietak Productions.

Bietak’s crew uses a hose to spray water on aluminum panels that are laid side-by-side and are connected to refrigeration machinery. It

takes a couple of nights to fully freeze. The slab of ice is an inch-and-a-half thick, he noted.

“It’s pretty intense, freezing ice in those kinds of temperatures,” said Bietak, who has produced the event in each of its 16 years.

At L.A. Live, where L.A. Kings Holiday ice returns at the end of the month, spokeswoman Cassandra Zebisch said the centerpiece will be a new 66-foot artificial Sequoia tree with more than 120,000 cool white LED mini-lights; it will be placed in the center of the ice rink and skaters will glide or stumble around it.

The L.A. Live rink is also nearly twice as big as in the past, measuring 132 feet by 80 feet and ranking as the largest outdoor ice skating rink in Los Angele, Zebisch said. The facility will remain up through midnight on New Years’ Eve. More Than Skating While the ice is meant for gliding around on, that poses another problem: Many people in Los Angeles have no idea how to ice skate.

That is partly why the Pershing Square rink has a range of extracurricular activities.

On Dec. 3, representatives from the city Department of Recreation and Parks, which runs Pershing Square, will bring busloads of kids from low-income communities to the rink to skate for free.

Capone said that one of the best aspects of Downtown on Ice is the interaction with all of the kids and parents she meets throughout the season.

“It’s wild,” she said. “Kids and adults are gliding around the ice, under the shadow of the Biltmore and Library Tower. I mean, you look up and it just transports you to all the storybooks of winter.”

One of the most popular attractions is the Winter Holiday Festival, which takes place from noon-6 p.m. on Dec. 14. The day will feature fake snow, crafts stations, an in-park train and photos with Santa (or, perhaps, a guy dressed as Santa).

The ice rink also marks the return of free outdoor concerts to the park. Some are pitched to the office crowd, such as a String Planet appearance on Dec. 19 and reggae outfit Urban Dread on Jan. 3 (both shows are noon-2 p.m.).

There are also weekend afternoon concerts, among them Zoot Suit Revue on Dec. 21 and Platinum Groove on Jan. 5.

Downtowners get two chances to ice skate outdoors this year, with rinks at Pershing Square and L.A. Live. Both rinks will be bigger than in years past.

Other lunchtime and weekend shows are a mix of soul, country, folk, rock and pop, as well as holiday music.

While hockey in Downtown is all about the Kings, Pershing Square also has a chance for amateurs to get out on the ice. There’s a catch, however: no skates allowed.

That will be the situation in January as the park brings back its annual broomball tournament, with various corporate teams playing hockey in sneakers and flailing with brooms in an effort to knock a small kickball into a net. For

the record, Los Angeles Downtown News participated last year and didn’t win. Nor did the paper’s team come close, though we did fall. A lot.

With Nisei Widows, Third Time’s Not the Charm East West Players Misses an Opportunity by Mining a Familiar Vein

By Jeff Favre ntertainment is too often formula driven, because it’s easier for a writer or director to give audiences a proven commodity than risk something new.

A prominent, easy formula in community theater is to take elderly, two-dimensional characters, add some unusual situations that allow for broad slapstick, fold in some obvious jokes and mix vigorously.

That recipe has been used three times for The Nisei Widows trilogy, which began in 2003. Its chief creator, East West Players Producing Artistic Director Tim Dang, has said this latest offering, The Nisei Widows Club: How Tomi Got Her Groove Back, will be the final chapter.

The show, directed with a heavy hand by veteran comic actress Amy Hill and starring the four original Nisei Widows Club actresses, opened last week and runs through Dec. 8 at EWP’s David Henry Hwang Theatre in Little Tokyo.

Dang and his co-writers Marilyn Tokuda and Denise Iketani (using the pseudonym Betty Tokudani) prove again they are keenly aware of what sells to a specific audience, but it comes with a downside: There’s nothing original in this show, and it speaks only to the 60-and-older crowd, more specifically ones who know the culture of Little Tokyo.

Much like community theater scribes Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, whose works rehash “Golden Girls” ideas with a Southern twist, The Nisei Widows Club creators sacrifice their impressive talents in an effort to

play it safe. This episode even lacks some of the original’s charm because it assumes the audience already knows the setup.

Three members of the titular club, bossy Sumi (Takayo Fischer), hipster Hana (Emily Kuroda) and wacky Betty (June Kyoko Lu), are comforting egotistical former Nisei Queen Tomi (Jeanne Sakata) after the funeral of her only son.

It’s evident from the opening moments that neither the writing team nor Hill know emotionally how to handle the scene, as the overplay of comedy mixed with Tomi’s crocodile tears make it hard to inject honest emotion later in the proceedings.

In what becomes an ongoing problem, the first scene in the nearly two-hour, two-act piece could be twice as funny at half the length. Instead of a few quick punch lines, several series of recycled jokes transpire as the women argue over who will allow Tomi to stay with them while she gets back on her feet.

Looking for something to do, the group winds up going to yoga, taught by Patrick (Tui Asau), a laidback, earthy guy whose patience is tested by Tomi’s flirtations. There are also some noxious intestinal issues, among other obvious jokes that come to mind when you have elderly people trying a new physical activity.

The women wind up in Hawaii in the second act, which is basically a retread of the first hour, only substituting yoga with hula dancing.

Little changes, except for Tesshi Nakagawa’s set, a simple pair of multi-use platforms that do a solid job of switching locales.

The gang’s all here: Takayo Fischer, Emily Kuroda, June Kyoko Lu and Jeanne Sakata reprise their roles in the final installment of East West Players’ Nisei Widows Club trilogy.

In a true inside baseball move, there’s also a several-minute roast of specific places and people in Little Tokyo, including a line about the “piece of poop” statue (by Urs Fischer) in the Geffen Contemporary parking lot behind the theater.

The cast is game, though they seem tonally lost. The few laughs come from Lu, who elevates the material through sheer chutzpah, in particular when she keeps swearing after the plane ride to Hawaii makes her motion-sick.

Hill doesn’t help matters by overemphasizing the dialogue and action to elicit laughs that should either come naturally or not at all.

It’s not until near the end that there’s a true

heartfelt moment. However, it comes so late that its potential impact is lost because the characters have not been developed.

All criticisms aside, The Nisei Widows Club accomplishes its goal to produce a safe broad comedy, and there’s little doubt that anyone who liked the first two installments will enjoy this one.

There’s nothing wrong with giving people what they want. But when you’re capable of so much more, it’s worth trying a new recipe.

Thanksgiving Going Out to Give Thanks Downtown Restaurants Serve Up Turkey and Much More on Nov. 28

By Eddie Kim here are few images more traditionally American than that of a happy family gathering around a table loaded with a big Thanksgiving feast. Behold, a perfectly roasted bird! Steaming piles of mashed potatoes! Stuffing! Vegetables! Pies galore!

What this idyllic image leaves out are the hours and hours of prep and cooking time, followed by more hours of cleanup. Which is to say, preparing the whole Thanksgiving meal thing isn’t for everyone, especially if you don’t have a sizeable kitchen to cook in or a big group of family and friends to feed.

Why not dine out instead? Downtown Los Angeles has a cornucopia of restaurants that will be open on Thursday, Nov. 28, and many of them will be serving special Thanksgiving menus that blow away the boring, dry turkey dinner. You can pick from traditional takes on the holiday meal or upscale revisions with plenty of wow factor. Best of all, you won’t have to do the dishes.

Don’t worry — there’s no holiday shame in leaving the hard work to the professionals.

Garden Variety: Café Pinot has earned a reputation for elegant but unpretentious food served in a gem of a setting: next to the Central Library’s Maguire Gardens, with the lights of the Financial District high-rises twinkling all around. On Thanksgiving the establishment, part of the Patina Group, is serving a threecourse meal. The $55 prix-fixe menu offers a diverse selection of dishes that should satisfy any tastes, traditional or otherwise. First courses include a mushroom-and-walnut soup and burrata cheese with smoked prosciutto and persimmons; mains include hand-carved turkey breast with stuffing, striped bass with lentils and duck breast with Israeli couscous. Chic Bird: The ever-popular Bottega Louie is back this Thanksgiving with a special holiday menu. Diners at the Seventh Street destination can go à la carte, with entrees ranging from a grilled pork chop with house-made applesauce to smoked ham or roasted turkey with traditional sides. Or opt for the full Thanksgiving meal: For $50, you get tomato soup, turkey with all the trimmings (including a vegetable side), bread and butter, and a choice of pumpkin or apple pie. Bottega Louie’s normal menu will also be available, if anyone wants to break the mold a bit. No matter what you order, get ready for a long line (no reservations) and deafening crowd noise in the open dining room.

Gobbling Heights: The Westin Bonaventure Hotel might not be the first place diners think of when they hear “romantic Thanksgiving meal,” but L.A. Prime hopes to change that.

The steakhouse on the hotel’s 35th floor offers a gorgeous view of Downtown, but the special three- or four-course dinner ($58 or $65) served from 2-9 p.m. on Thanksgiving is perhaps the bigger draw. Start with dishes like the seared diver scallop with a browned butter sauce, followed by roasted free-range turkey or more exotic offerings such as crab-crusted bluefish with chanterelle mushrooms. There’s no pumpkin pie for dessert, but the sweet potato cheesecake with cinnamon whipped cream will do just fine, right?

Turkey Luau: The pilgrims and Native Americans probably didn’t sip tropical cocktails during the first Thanksgiving dinner, but who’s stopping you? The tiki-themed Trader Vic’s at L.A. Live is serving a special menu for Turkey Day from 3 p.m. on, offering three courses for $39.99 ($18.99 for kids). The meal begins with butternut squash soup, then transitions to a traditional turkey dinner with stuffing, brownbutter mashed potatoes, almond green beans, gravy and cranberry sauce. For dessert, choose between a slice of pumpkin or pecan pie. The tropical setting might be odd considering the traditional food, but you won’t care after a few Mai Tais.

The Original Pantry Café has been around since 1924 because of its tasty, filling, no-frills fare, and that philosophy extends to its Thanksgiving turkey dinner. For less than $20, diners get a big plate of the bird with all the trimmings — no fancy modern interpretation here. Do ask for some of the Pantry’s delicious sourdough bread (buttered and toasted, of course) to drag through the gravy. Aside from the great value, the Pantry is also a perfect choice for anyone who has to work late on Thanksgiving, as the eatery owned by former Mayor Richard Riordan is open 24/7. Just remember to bring cash and an empty stomach — “portion control” isn’t a catchphrase here.

From 3-8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, diners can catch a three-course $49 prix-fixe meal. The dinner starts with a classic Caesar salad or creamy cauliflower soup, followed by turkey with the requisite sides: brioche and chestnut stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied butternut squash and more. Finish it off with a modern spin on pumpkin pie or a piece of Black Forest cake. As with Patina Group cousin Café Pinot, there’s a $19 menu for the under-12 set.

Deep-fried turkey is mighty delicious, but considering that frying mishaps account for nearly $27 million in property damage each year, maybe leaving the work to Checkers’ chefs isn’t such a bad idea.
