his first-ever juice bar and lounge resides in the Historic Spring Arcade Building. A Downtown News “Best of Downtown Los Angeles 2015” nominee, Green Grotto Juice Bar (GGJB) is championed as Downtown Los Angeles’ healthy haven. Dining at Green Grotto Juice Bar offers an unparalleled experience highlighted by “bar-style” organic fresh-pressed juicing, exotic acai bowls, world-famous Jamaican-style patties, and the ultimate entertainment hub with free Wi-Fi, mobile phone chargers, dozens of classic card and board games, two large flat-screens featuring music videos and movies, and lively music all day. Few juice bars in L.A. can compare, and even fewer offer such an unconventional and masterfully crafted menu. Founder and CEO, executive juiceologist and former mixologist, Kieran Roberts, created the award-nominated menu featuring appetizing Jamaican-style patties, juices and foods made from locally sourced produce full of antioxidants, vitamins and proteins. Health and wellness seekers are seated in a vibrant and lively atmosphere influenced by the Caribbean culture and vintage American aesthetics. Sip on a cup of fresh-pressed juice while hosting a study group or work meeting. Both the indoor and outdoor lounge areas offer comfortable benches made from repurposed turf, and tables and chairs crafted from repurposed wood. This healthy haven’s signature options include 14 fresh-pressed juices and seven ready-to-order cold-pressed alternatives. Roberts used his decadeplus experience as a mixologist and juicer to influence the bar’s unique “cocktail style” formula. Unlike most juice bars, each GGJB concoction adheres to a specific recipe with calculated measurements – you can order a juice and expect to experience the same delicious and tropical taste with every sip. The customer favorite is the immune boosting, Green Grotto, a delightful creation made with kale, pear, celery, parsley, green apple, cucumber, ginger and papaya. The natural sweetness of the fruits enhances the refreshingly delicious concoction. The apple-cinnamon cider is a digestive enhancer served hot or cold, suitable for the winter and warm weather seasons. The mix of apple, lemon, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg and cinnamon create a unique texture and sweet taste. GGJB is a favorite post-workout destination thanks to its original Choc-Pro Paradise protein smoothie. It is chock full of hemp/whey protein, peanut butter, banana, cacao, flaxseed, chia seeds and a choice of milk. On the weekends, Downtowners flock to the juice bar/lounge for the cold-pressed Hang-Over juice made with sorrel, coconut water and ginger. It is known to help alleviate the aches and low energy after a night on the town. The natural antioxidants

of sorrel act as a detoxifier while the coconut water replenishes and refreshes your system. Green Grotto Juice Bar’s acai bowl lineup features organic produce, tropical fruits, whole grain oats, and crunchy granola and walnuts. When blended, the results are nutritious and mouthwatering meals that will keep you satisfied for hours. The Simple Climber bowl is anything but, featuring a blended mountain of banana and strawberries, topped with crushed walnuts, crisp almond granola, and apple and strawberry slices. The Lover is ideal for replenishing energy levels, with its blend of acai berry, papaya, pumpkin, maca and cinnamon. It’s topped with banana slices, granola, crushed cashews, and Chinese goji berries. The Islander presents a taste of the islands with a fusion of acai, kale, mango and honeydew sprinkled with blueberries, kiwi slices and granola. A Table for All Downtown Restaurants Offer a Feast for Every Foodie

Whether you’re looking for upscale eats before a visit to the Music Center, sustainable ingredients from local farmers, comfort food and a cocktail, tasty street eats or cuisine from around the globe, you're in the right place: You’ll find it all in the steaming hot kitchens of Downtown Los Angeles. The Central City’s chefs are cooking up a culinary storm, and diners are eager to get caught up in the torrent of good food being served across every district. There are the old guards like Taix, which continue to satisfy with French country favorites, or the always stunning views and perfectly aged steaks found at L.A. Prime. More casual classics include the French dip sandwiches at Philippe's and the succulent pastrami at Langer’s Deli. New restaurants are making their mark on the dining scene, too, with inventive flavor combinations that are at once modern and respectful of heritage. Take, for example, the Mexican fusion fare at Financial District newcomer FOH, where you can indulge in an Angus beef burger with pork belly and huitlacoche (a mushroom-like fungus that grows on corn). At Barrel Down you can sample from 40 of the best craft beers on tap while munching on maple whiskey ribs, or get a kimchi taco and kale Cobb salad from District on the Bloc. Wherever you pull up a seat, it’s all good.

his bastion of French country cuisine is a Los Angeles original. Celebrating its 89th year in business, the restaurant’s affordable prices, extensive wine cellar and rich history have attracted a loyal following, not only from diners but from its staff – many have served at Taix for more than three generations. They’re consistently kind and dedicated, and known to give impromptu tours of the memorabilia. The Taix family’s roots go back to the HautesAlpes in southern France, where they were third and fourth generation sheepherders and bakers. In the late 1800s, they opened a hotel in the French Quarter of Downtown Los Angeles. In 1927, a restaurant debuted on the bottom floor of the hotel, and 35 years later that restaurant moved to its current location – a chalet-like icon that attracts city politicos, businessmen, couples looking for a little romance, late-night hipsters and Francophiles who can’t get enough of the region’s cuisine. It’s just five minutes from the heart of Downtown in Echo Park, with inexpensive valet parking for meals. Today, the Taix family has stayed true to the tradition of affordable elegance and hearty French country cuisine. Serving up all the classics, from garlicky escargot to daily quiche to French onion soup to two versions of a salade Niçoise. Famed French chef Laurent Quenioux, founder of 7th Street Bistro and Bistro K, has come on board as a consulting chef. Diners are known to flock to Taix just for the soup, served tableside from a silver tureen, in a bow to Old World dining. They’re all made using aromatic vegetarian stock – except for Friday’s famed clam chowder – and the servers will keep refilling until you surrender (and you should, there’s more to come). Taix is known for tender cuts of meat, generous portions, and rich sauces that still find a way not to overshadow the star of the plate. The lamb chops and pot roast are pure comfort. rosemary-tinged pommes frites. Diners are drawn to lunch specials and the very reasonable daily specials – among these, the coq au vin, braised lamb shank and the braised short ribs are spectacular. Wine lovers will be hard-pressed to pick just one glass from the vast, award-winning wine list – the large cellar offers the most affordable selections in L.A. It was named “L.A.’s best kept wine secret” by the Los Angeles Times. Whether dining or enjoying a cocktail, the dimly lit 321 Lounge has become a popular gathering place for trendy locals and is open until the wee hours. There is live music Fridays after 10:30 p.m., and things are always lively around game time, baseball or basketball (the Times also declared Taix the “one of the five best places to watch the Lakers game”). Taix’s Dodger Stadium-adjacent location makes it a popular meeting place before and after games; you can leave your car and walk to the game. Despite the famed wine cellar, it’s not all red and white inside this Sunset Boulevard chalet: the 321 bartenders know their stuff and can shake a mean martini. A

poached eggs drizzled in hollandaise, is a reimagining of the classic Benedict. And the scrumptious egg sammich, which combines Black Forest ham, overmedium eggs and aged cheddar on a perfectly soft brioche bun, is a modern-day favorite. The spacious, high-ceiling interior features soft lighting, big windows and a wall of floating candles, giving the restaurant a comfy but upscale ambiance. Choose a seat at the high-top communal tables near the bar to make new friends and take advantage of a generous happy hour. Spicy wings and ribs, oysters on the shell, calamari and tuna tartare tacos make up the small plates menu at a steal of a deal. Add some $5 draft beer, well drinks and tap wine, or a $7 specialty cocktail to really kick off your celebration. For an intimate setting, the main dining area offers plush chairs or a booth to share with a few of your closest pals. Sample from a plate of oysters, the mouth-watering smoked pork belly flatbread drizzled with Roquefort cream, green apple and caramelized onions, or a Judgement Day Platter of wildcaught seafood: oysters, ceviche, shrimp and tuna tacos, accompanied by house cocktail and blue corn chips. t the intersection of Little Tokyo, the Civic Center and the Arts District, this casual, contemporary gastropub is just a stone’s throw from the courthouse. Jusice Urban Tavern is open from morning til night and lays down the law with an encyclopedic knowledge of craft cocktails, local beer and wine, and a seasonal menu with California-grown ingredients. Join the early-risers from the adjacent Double Tree Inn for the Justice breakfast buffet, complete with made-to-order omelets, seasonal fruit and freshly made pastries. Coffee, tea and juice are included. On the regular menu, choose from classic bacon-and-eggs breakfasts and scrambles, warm cinnamon brioche French toast with Huckleberry jam, or the signature granola pancakes, which mix fluffy and crunchy into a delightfully textured package. Want to spice it up? Sample from the “Justice Style” menu, which includes some pretty original takes on breakfast favorites. Try the three-cheese crispy flatbread, a cheesy base for fried eggs, black beans, chorizo, onion and house-made salsa for a fantastic spin on huevos rancheros. The blue corn crab cakes, served with roasted corn flapjacks and

palette can travel the world with the ruby port and cranberry borscht or roasted cauliflower with raisins, almonds, harissa and naan. Return to the Pacific with a bucket of bay shrimp steamed in a local lager. Consult the sandwich board to make your final judgement on Justice’s favorite meaty burgers, like the Barrister Burger (made with hormonefree, regional beef) and the Mediterranean lamb burger (served on a brioche bun with an eggplant tapenade). For lighter fare, Justice also offers a variety of salads with rotating, seasonal ingredients and mains like wild-caught salmon, ribeye steak, barbeque ribs and a classic fish and chips. Keep up with your five-a-day by throwing in a roasted vegetable, always fresh and in season. Get some posttrial relief with a rewarding ricotta cheesecake or toffee date cake. Conquer the extensive craft beer menu with a liquid dinner. Choose specialty brews from California breweries Stone, Lost Abbey, Modern Times, Hangar 24, Trumer Pilsner and more; or, stick to your favorite Angeleno brews from Golden Road or Arts District neighbor Angel City. achi Deli and Cafe has been a neighborhood favorite in City West for years, and for good reason – it offers a diverse menu full of healthy salads, sandwiches, pastas and even Argentinian empanadas. Located on Wilshire Boulevard just west of the 110 Freeway, Kachi Deli and Cafe is also a popular choice for catered events around Downtown L.A. and beyond. There’s even delivery if leaving the office or loft is a little too tough. The cafe kicks things off with breakfast daily, and nothing on the morning menu (served until 11 a.m.) breaks the $10 mark, making it a particular value. There are simple grab-and-go items such as yogurt parfait with granola and fresh fruit, and breakfast bagels with your choice of ham or turkey. Those who want a more filling start to the day can explore Kachi’s egg specialties, including a portabello and feta, or a quinoa omelet with sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese or try the soyrizo wrap with soy chorizo, cheese, onion and potatoes. Kachi Deli and Cafe expands things with its lunch and dinner menu. Craving a salad? Kachi has 11 of them, available in wrap form and with additional choices of chicken, tuna, steak or shrimp. The namesake Kachi salad touts organic mixed greens, egg, apple, blue cheese, walnuts, cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette. The Asian salad, meanwhile, tosses together greens, red cabbage, orange segments, chicken, avocado and wonton strips, all in a soy-ginger dressing. hen people walk into Yxta (pronounced eeks’-tah) Cocina Mexicana, there’s a feeling that everyone is in on the same secret – they’ve found a hidden gem. Located in a Central Avenue strip mall, Yxta features a modern, eclectic interior with high ceilings and white washed brick walls covered with cool art. Happy hour denizens sip margaritas at the bar, large groups share taco plates at the communal table and couples occupy cozy tables. Bartenders shake several kinds of margaritas daily, incorporating the more than 50 silver, reposado and anejo varieties available. The signature cocktails are mixed with hand-squeezed fruit juices – blood orange, cucumber-jalapeño, and fresh sour, among many. There’s a serious beer program too: 12 draft and bottled brews. Yxta is probably best known for its tacos al pastor: incredibly tender pork, chile sauce, a little grilled pineapple and onion, all cradled inside a homemade tortilla. ublic School 213 was originally just a small bar in the corner of the Daily Grill, but it took over the entire space after a months-long renovation that ended in summer 2015. The eatery at the corner of Sixth and Flower streets now boasts a huge dining area with private rooms for large groups and a long, fully stocked bar. With diverse menus and a sleek industrial-chic vibe, Public School is of one of the best options in Downtown for a big meal out or just to grab a drink and watch the game. Public School specializes in craft beer, with nearly two dozen brews on rotation regularly. Whether it’s a crisp School House IPA from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. or a dense, rich Old Rasputin from North Coast Brewing, Public School has a unique draft beer for every palate. In case the draft selection isn’t enough, also expect a changing selection of canned and bottled beers. That variety extends to the cocktail menu. With a huge selection of spirits and house-made flavorings, Public School is putting together some intriguing cocktails with a modern flair. Highlights include the

Earl of Juniper (with Earl Grey teainfused gin, lavender syrup and lemon) and the wintery Fireside Chat (apple and cranberry juices, sage, High West double rye whiskey). All those drinks go great with Public School’s big menu of modern American food, and the gastropub offers brunch, lunch and dinner, as well as some happy hour specials. Diners can get started with a selection of appetizers to share at the table, including the popular mezze plate starring baba ghanoush (roasted eggplant dip), hummus, tapenade-marinated feta cheese, crispy chickpeas and flatbread. Fitting with the spirit of the gastropub’s name, the menu has a few upscale takes on schoolhouse favorites like the bacon-cheddar tater tots with sriracha ketchup and the chorizo mac and cheese. Other dishes take a playful twist on the classics: Check out the ahi tuna tacos, melding sushi-grade fish with jicama-avocado salsa, lemon aioli and ponzu sauce in a crunchy wonton shell, or the crispy Buffalo cauliflower with bleu cheese aioli. Those are just the starters – Public School has a spread of salads, soups,

sandwiches, burgers and larger entrees, all with globe-trotting flavors. Italy’s represented by the Tuscan chop salad, which includes crespone (a Northern Italian salame), milky burrata cheese, kale, chickpeas, red onion, and crisp prosciutto. An ahi Niçoise salad gives a revamped take on a French classic with slices of seared tuna with greens, potatoes, tapenade and string beans. Earthy farro grains and brussels sprouts are mixed with roasted butternut squash, cranberries, a curry vinaigrette and topped with roasted scallops. And those looking for a heftier salad can turn to the grilled steak version with wild mushrooms, arugula, tomato, shaved fennel and walnuts all tossed in a white truffle vinaigrette and sprinkled with Grana Padano cheese. ant a taste of L.A. history? How about a 45 cent cup of coffee? Incredibly, you can find them both at the same place, a block away from Union Station, at Philippe, The Original. In 1908, Philippe Mathieu opened what would become one of the city’s oldest restaurants, and was credited with creating the first French dipped sandwich a decade later. Like many great discoveries, this one was an accident, as Mathieu inadvertently dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with cooking juices. A goodnatured customer, an LAPD officer, agreed to take the sandwich anyway, soggy roll and all. He loved it so much that he returned the next day with friends, asking for the same thing. The rest is culinary history. Today, six people involved with Philippe’s are descendants of the family that brought the restaurant to the area in 1927. Freeway construction forced it to move from Aliso Street to its current location in 1951, where it has welcomed diners with its signature sawdust-covered floor and long communal tables for more than 50 years. Hearty breakfasts are served daily until 10:30 a.m. Philippe’s offers several delicious versions of the French Dip, including pastrami, roasted pork, leg of lamb, turkey, ham and roast beef. D

istrict on the Bloc is the expected, combined with the deliciously unexpected. It is a bit of the old and a bit of the new. It is invitingly familiar but at the same time delightfully unknown. Which is why diners looking for a dose of culinary pizzazz head to District on the BLOC at the newly renovated Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown. At District, the menu uses extraordinary foods grown sustainably by local farmers, as well as unparalleled ideas from food purveyors around the world. For the restaurant, farm to table means products that are created on a small scale by farmer-artisans who are relentlessly uncompromising and have, through passion and invention, further dimensionalized the culinary arts. With this worldly palette of the fresh, the natural and the superior, District creates combinations and juxtapositions of flavors that are wonderfully intuitive and modern. Executive Chef Hansen Lee ventured from his home in Seoul, South Korea, in his early 20s to attend Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, and was awarded the highly competitive James Beard Foundation and Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Scholarship. In Chicago, Lee started his culinary career at W. Lakeshore Chicago and Peninsula. Lee eventually traded the Windy City for the City of Angels, securing a position at the Peninsula Beverly Hills, where he refined his culinary skills. Lee excelled, and, after two years, was recruited as executive chef at a boutique hotel in Huntington Beach. Subsequently, Lee held prestigious chef positions at the Hyatt Century Plaza, The Langham Huntington Hotel, and Constance Hotel d2 before helming District on the Bloc. Lee infuses the menu with a blend of Angeleno contemporary favorites – caramelized brussel sprouts and kimchi tacos to share, as well as beetroot and kale cobb salads – and exotic pairings. The seafood pot pie with lobster béchamel, and cedar plank Scottish salmon with squash risotto give seafood plates a whole new twist. Along with the espressorubbed barbecue baby back ribs, Lee shows customers that he is never short on surprises. The selection of fresh fusion flatbreads, led by a fig and prosciutto duo with sundried tomato tapenade, complete the eclectic dinner menu.

Breakfast at District caters to all morning appetites, from the yogurt, granola and fruit lovers to those requiring a heartier meal of eggs – scrambled, poached, fried, frittatta’ed or in an omelette. n its first year, Pez Cantina has made a name for itself as a reputable destination among the burgeoning Downtown L.A. restaurant scene. Just a short walk from The Broad and Disney Concert Hall, Pez Cantina is the perfect spot for those looking for an authentic yet modern take on Mexican cuisine. After their success with Milk ice cream parlor and bakeshop in Hollywood, owner and former Patina Chef Bret Thompson and his Mexicanborn wife Lucy Thompson-Ramirez, focus their menu on the many distinct regions of Mexico: from Baja to Oaxaca to the Yucatan Peninsula, offering the freshest sea and land-totable dishes. Some signature starters and crowd favorites include a round of Pez powder-coated tortilla chips, guacamole and one of eight salsa choices. The cantina’s daily ceviche specials include a Sea of Cortez yellowtail or Baja stone crab topped with fresh veggies, fresh lime and a smear of chili puya aioli or avocado crema. Add a drizzle of chili oil, pickled onions and sliced avocado for the perfect warm afternoon treat. In addition, Pez Cantina offers Loreto-style fish tacos made with handmade corn tortillas, lime aioli and swordfish fried in a shatteringly crispy Pacifico batter cocoon. Topped with lime-pickled slaw and salsa negra, this taco is the closest thing to a Baja meal you’ll get in L.A. earching for something a little different than your typical 2 a.m. taco truck? Take a quick hop across the L.A. River to Boyle Heights’ Puertos del Pacifico for refined Mexican street food at neighborhood prices. Head chef Alan Matheus provides a range of traditional dishes – tacos, burritos, enchiladas and tostadas – made with colorful, seasonal ingredients. Mexican breakfast plates like chilaquiles and huevos rancheros are seasoned and spiced to flavorful perfection. Besides the great flavors and beautiful plating, Matheus also focuses on quality that kicks it up a notch. Exotic seafood options such as shark and octopus come from wild, local and sustainable seafood providers in Santa Barbara. owntown Donuts was built in the spirit of the legendary donut shops that graced the central cityscape of Downtown Los Angeles since the 1920s – Mayflower, Cooper’s and Town Donuts – places where Downtowners could enjoy a freshly baked donut and a cup of delicious hot coffee almost any time, day or night. Angelenos took their donuts very seriously, even then. In 1929 the L.A. Times ran an article that officially changed the spelling from “doughnut” to donut, putting Los Angeles on the map in donut history. The founder of Downtown Donuts, Les Goodwin, has also had a long love affair with donuts, starting with buying donuts as a child in the 1960s from the Helms Bakery street truck service. His high school sweetheart worked at Winchell’s. Later, Goodwin traveled for business, tasting donuts all over the nation. He likened himself to the equivalent of a sommelier – for donuts. Goodwin decided to take his lifelong passion and give something back to the city, a traditional donut shop in the Historic Core of Los Angeles. T

he antithesis of many of the city’s noisy, crowded Japanese establishments, this unpretentious eatery in Little Tokyo serves up some of the best and most affordable sushi in town. Oomasa opened in 1972 before the sushi craze of the 1980s, and has developed a loyal following of locals, as well as fans that drive in. At the age of 24, founder Masaharu Motoyama emigrated from Hokkaido in Northern Japan, bringing with him the artful skill of sushi making. His search for the American dream

landed him in Little Tokyo, where he built the largest sushi bar in Southern California with 40 seats. He trained his sushi chefs the traditional Japanese way, making vegetable floral art pieces while interacting with the curious sushi bar customers. Motoyama and his experienced, skilled chefs continue his tradition of classic preparation and commitment to the highest quality of fish that sets this family-owned restaurant apart. Behind the impressive sushi bar, chefs create a tempting selection of sushi, sashimi and rolls. Its approach is elegant: While most sushi bars have incorporated fusion cuisine and wildly inventive specialty rolls, Oomasa has

perfected the Japanese culinary art of beautifully cut and presented fish – gorgeous pieces of deep red tuna, fresh sea urchin, seared albacore, spicy tuna and scallop rolls, and marbled salmon lure connoisseurs to the counter. For lunch, try the numbered specials – compartmentalized trays with fish, tempura, meat and salads. It’s an enormous amount of food for around a steal. If you crave sushi, the rainbow-colored chirashi special includes 10 slices of fresh seafood stacked atop seasoned rice. But the menu doesn’t stop at sushi. There are udon noodles with a poached egg dropped in a giant bowl, or favorites like the golden and tender

pork cutlet, flavorful chicken or beef teriyaki, and crispy tempura combination plate. In the evening, there’s delectable broiled salmon, una-ju (eel over rice) and colorful sashimi plates. All specials come with a bowl of miso soup, steamed rice, Japanese pickles and a serving of delicious ice cream. Oomasa has earned a reputation for quality ingredients and top-notch service.
