hat’s more iconic than a glass slide? OUE Skyspace LA, located in Downtown’s landmark US Bank Tower, is California’s must-see new attraction. Featuring entertainment and excitement for visitors of every age, guests will experience Los Angeles from an entirely new vantage point — 1,000 feet above Downtown. On your way to the top, the journey begins on the Interactive Level where a 360-degree L.A. Skyline Time Lapse captures some of the city’s most notable landmarks and neighborhoods. Guests can also interact with the Infinity Mirror, which creates reflections upon reflections down an old elevator shaft; or the Silhouette Wall, which conjures reflective images based on your body movement. What sets Skyspace LA apart from other attractions, however, is its signature and thrilling experience known as The Skyslide. This 45-footlong outdoor slide, made entirely of

glass, connects the 70th floor to the east observation terrace. Guests can view the city in a whole new light as they slide along the exterior of the tower. The breathtaking views are the final touch. The spacious, outdoor terraces are unlike any outdoor space in the city, with glass balustrades that showcase the view as far as the eye can see. As the tallest open-air observation deck in the state, OUE Skyspace LA is destined to become one of the city’s most iconic destinations. A Worldwide Model for Entertainment

W

hat began with the transformation of a 25-acre parcel of land into Staples Center and L.A. Live has sparked an urban regeneration and forever changed the trajectory of Downtown Los Angeles. Thanks to Staples Center and L.A. Live, Downtown Los Angeles is now the premier location for sports and entertainment fans and events, a destination for visitors and major conventions, a playground for residents, and the model for sports and entertainment districts worldwide. Collectively drawing approximately 20 million visitors annually, Staples Center and L.A. Live host more than 1,500 events each year throughout its 4 million-squarefoot integrated campus. Rival to none in its amenities and guest services, the campus features a 20,000-seat arena; two music venues — the 7,100-seat Microsoft Theater and The Novo by Microsoft, a 2,300-seat club; more than a dozen renowned restaurants; a 14-screen Cineplex, Regal L.A. Live: A Barco Innovation Center; two smaller clubs — The Conga Room and Lucky Strike; the Grammy Museum and two luxury hotels — The Ritz Carlton Hotel, Los Angeles, and J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live; as well as conference and hospitality spaces — all of which are tremendous economic engines for the city of Los Angeles and Southern California. Since Staples Center opened in 1999, the integrated campus has drawn more than 200 million visitors to Downtown, has generated approximately $50 million in annual tax revenue for the city, county and state, and retains more than 2,400 full-time employees. Not only did the creation of the integrated campus ignite a Downtown renaissance, it has also provided the infrastructure for the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) to be able to attract larger citywide conventions. Since the completion of the campus in 2008, conventions overall have increased by 115%, while citywide conventions grew by 30% from 2015 to 2016. Today, the LACC hosts more than 300 prestigious events annually, including the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the Anime Expo and Los Angeles Auto Show. With the LACC’s positioning as part of the Staples Center and L.A. Live campus, the city has never been better equipped to welcome large-scale conventions. Additionally, L.A. Live has served as a catalyst to draw some of the largest and highest profile live entertainment and sports events to Downtown Los Angeles, including such annual events as the Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, ESPY Awards, BET Experience, All-Star

Chef Classic, Nike 3ON3 and Made LA. In addition to annual events, L.A. Live also hosts a number of special events including movie premieres and NHL and NBA All-Star Games, which will be returning to Los Angeles respectively in 2017 and 2018, with each event expecting to generate tens of millions of dollars in total economic impact to Los Angeles. The Staples Center and L.A. Live campus also offers an extraordinary environment that builds community and brings people together in a way that simply does not exist elsewhere in the city of Los Angeles. It provides a platform for residents, workers and visitors alike to celebrate unforgettable moments with friends and family. It has created a dynamic civic gathering place, a place that offers a dense mix of uses and draws a varied set of visitors from the entire Los Angeles basin, day and night. Whether it is to celebrate the Lakers’ and LA Kings’ championships, or to participate in viewing parties for the Olympic Games or presidential inaugurations, or to come together for concerts and community events, the campus reaches beyond neighborhood boundaries and cultures to truly embody the diversity of Los Angeles. Through the Grammy Museum’s educational music

programs, the campus annually hosts more than 25,000 students. Since opening in 2008, more than 230,000 students have participated in these programs, which offer the opportunity to learn about English, history, science, math and politics through music. In addition to daily school tours and over 180 workshops per school year, the Grammy Museum offers scholastic, enrichment, career development and outreach programs for children and educators. Over the past 10 years, AEG, the owners and operators of Staples Center and L.A. Live, has raised and contributed more than $100 million in direct financial and in-kind support for charitable, community and civic programs that focus on areas of education, the arts, and health and wellness. Once a series of run-down structures and parking lots, the integrated Staples Center and L.A. Live campus has today become a key economic driver for billions of dollars in new investment and a source of pride for the city of Los Angeles. Not only is it a hub for Angelenos to celebrate the best and most memorable sports and live entertainment events, it is also a sought-after convention destination and must-visit stop on tourists’ itineraries. cons are often the product of innovation and history. With WilshireValencia, Los Angeles developer Sonny Astani celebrates Wilshire Boulevard like never before, combining the heritage of one of Los Angeles’ most iconic boulevards with a distinctly modern concept, envisioning a place that honors the past and aims to create an enduring legacy of its own. Located in Downtown’s emerging Central City West district, the property has garnered praise and enthusiasm upon its June 2016 introduction. Inspired architecture, elevated, inclusive design, building community and creating strong connections to the neighborhood, the hallmarks of Astani developments, are recognizable at every turn. For Astani, the “where” of a project is always just as important as the “what,” and his relationship to Downtown Los Angeles has been a long one. As a premier Los Angeles developer for over three decades, Sonny and his firm, Astani Enterprises, has actively contributed to the growth of DTLA and South Park, shaping numerous significant urban residential and mixed-use projects. Working in partnership with other developers, designers, builders and members of the local community, Astani is committed to the continued growth and thoughtful development of Downtown. Honoring Wilshire Boulevard Anyone who knows and loves Los Angeles can appreciate a Wilshire Boulevard address. It is hard to find a thoroughfare

More Than Just an Address WilshireValencia Creates a Residential Oasis on an Iconic Los Angeles Boulevard

that is more iconic or has as many firmly established addresses in Los Angeles history. Coveted by locals, it stands for timeless, classic L.A., and is the epitome of this great city. It brings an uncommon personality, spanning the beaches of Santa Monica to the pockets of DTLA. With each textured block comes a distinct sense of place and neighborhood, all of them connected by the single pulse of this one essential artery. In 15 miles of boulevard, a vastly diverse, international city comes alive.

At WilshireValencia, it is easy for residents to feel connected to surrounding urban life or find open space away from it. Stepping out means many opportunities to dive into the buzz of colorful street culture. Innovative restaurants, ambitious art, exciting pop-ups, art galleries, and the diverse selection of multicultural food carts and trucks make this an ideal spot to drink in the city, to truly imbibe the best of Los Angeles. But for those who also are looking for room to unwind, the property’s outdoor spaces cre-

ate sanctuary and calm, while nearby MacArthur Park and access to transit mean people really have it all — like never before. Designed for Indoor/Outdoor Living A cornerstone of WilshireValencia is its unprecedented 20,000 square feet of dedicated open/recreational space, which features an 8,800-square-foot pool and spa courtyard, a sprawling and lush Zen garden as well as sports courts for basketball. The stunning 4,200-square-foot gym showcases the latest fitness equipment, while a glassenclosed billiards lounge offers residents a more low-key place to relax and socialize. Inside the units, the approach to floor plan design was intentionally disciplined and the approach to design well-considered, with nine-foot ceilings, hardwood floors and space-saving features. Understanding that modern life demands efficiencies and lifestyle amenities that may not have been the norm even five years ago, each of WilshireValencia’s layouts reflects these contemporary needs. The goal was to create built-in as much as was possible, to give inhabitants a clutter-free, uniquely conceived storage capacity. Next was easy access to in-unit washer and dryer, a chief concern for busy people. Then came outdoor private balconies where residents can appreciate the unique Los Angeles climate, enjoy views and invite the outside, in. Nothing feels more spacious than fresh air and indoor/outdoor living. Visit wilshirevalencia.com for more information.

A Park in the Heart of Downtown

Historic Pershing Square Has Gathered Angelenos Since 1866

L

ocated in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles at 532 S. Olive St., the historic Pershing Square is operated by the Department of Recreation and Parks. Dedicated in 1866 and originally named La Plaza Abaja (the Lower Plaza), the “Square” underwent its first renovation in 1911 to reflect the social and economic growth of the city. During World War I, the park was used for receptions for the militia and provided a public forum much like London’s Hyde Park Corner. In 1918 the park’s name was formally changed to Pershing Square in honor of the World War I general. The Department of Recreation and Parks, the Pershing Square Property Association and the Community Redevelopment Agency joined to renovate the park once again in 1989. Today, Pershing Square features an open and elevated Mayan-style amphitheater, a grove of orange trees that

pays tribute to Los Angeles’ agricultural roots, and at the southern end, a large river rock-lined circular fountain with a time-released water flow creating a tidal action. Artists Ricardo Legorreta, Laurie Olin and Barbara McCarren helped design Pershing Square. Pershing Square hosts a variety of community events. The Pershing Square Downtown Stage is a six-week summer concert series with free music, films and events four days a week. Artists who have performed on the Downtown Stage include Kansas, The Bangles, The Psychedelic Furs, Electric Light Orchestra and Survivor. A weekend Salsa Festival, Friday Night Flicks and Lunchtime Concerts are all part of the summer lineup. A popular outdoor ice skating rink is hosted by Pershing Square from November through January, including a two-day Winter Holiday Festival.

Free yoga classes are held in the new community room, while a new chess area is available for chess clubs, tournaments and casual players. Park visitors enjoy the children’s playgrounds, pet area and hanging wall garden. Pershing Square runs a Mobile Youth Program that provides free arts and crafts, sports, games, and summer and winter day camps for hundreds of children. A Wednesday farmers market and Food Truck Friday are held weekly in the park. Annual events include art shows by the Art Squared City Scape Outdoor Gallery; the St. Patrick’s Day free concert celebration; Spring Extravaganza; and the Summer Salsa Festival. The venue also serves as a major location for television shows, films and private parties. For more information about Department of Recreation and Parks events at Pershing Square, Outdoor Concert and Event Center, activities, services, programs and facilities, visit laparks.org/pershingsquare or call (213) 847-4970.

The college established a San Francisco campus in the 1970s and opened Orange County and San Diego locations the following decade. Architect Jon Jerde and the Jerde Partnership designed the FIDM Los Angeles campus building at Ninth Street and Grand Avenue. It was completed in 1990 and is crowned with the first ceramic

dome to be built in Downtown in 50 years. The lauded landscape architect Laurence Halprin created Grand Hope Park, which fronts FIDM’s artistic structure. Many sculptures and works of art enhance the building’s exterior and interior. At the FIDM Grand Avenue entrance, visitors are greeted by a masked angel sculpture called “Transforming Yourself Into Fashion,” designed by Gywnn Murrill. The angel pays homage to its birthplace, the City of Angels, and leads guests to the building’s open rotunda, which is graced with the work of California artist Tony Berlant. The FIDM LA campus features the FIDM Museum & Galleries, which presents three to four free-to-the-public fashion themed exhibitions each year. In 2017, the FIDM Museum & Galleries will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” exhibition. Healing the Whole Person

White Memorial Medical Center Is One of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for a Reason

H

ow does a hospital become one of America’s 100 best hospitals? There’s the technical reason and then there’s the special reason. The technical reason first. Every year, using three years of Medicare data, Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, analyzes the clinical outcomes of nearly 4,500 hospitals in America across 32 different conditions and procedures. Hospitals that outperform the rest of the industry become eligible for Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. When that excellence in care is sustained for three years in a row, then a hospital is named one of America’s 100 best hospitals for that year.

Proud to serve the community for over 103 years. 10 ICONS OF DOWNTOWN

Why does this matter? Patients treated at hospitals like White Memorial had a 26.5% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in a non-recipient hospital, as measured across 19 conditions and procedures during the period from 2012 to 2014. During the same time White Memorial also proudly earned the following distinctions from Healthgrades: n Five-Star recipient for treatment of heart failure — fourteen years in a row n Five-Star recipient for treatment of pneumonia — fourteen years in a row n Five-Star recipient for treatment of sepsis — 6 years in a row n Recipient of the Healthgrades pulmonary care Excellence Award — 4 years in a row n Five-Star recipient for defibrillator procedures — 2 years in a row n Five-Star recipient for pacemaker procedures — 2 years in a row n Five-Star recipient for treatment of respiratory failure — 2 years in a row n Recipient of the Healthgrades Critical Care Excellence Award — 2 years in a row All of these accolades and commendations would not be possible without the factor that makes White Memorial so special — its people. People caring for people is White Memorial’s mission. One by one, its people enter into a relationship with every patient, and one by one both patient and caregiver are transformed by that relationship. Each patient matters, each situation is unique. Nevertheless, the clinical team, nurse, doctor, administrator and chaplain ministers to their pain, providing care, comfort, support and compassion. White Memorial’s faith-based ministry to share God’s love by providing physical, mental and spiritual healing, and healing the whole person, is what distinguishes White Memorial from any other hospital or system or network. And it’s what’s makes it one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals. For more information visit whitememorial.com.

Skid Row Housing Trust Helps Create Neighborhoods Where Everyone Has a Place

W

ith 27 years of experience working for the Los Angeles community, Skid Row Housing Trust is nationally recognized for developing and renovating innovative permanent supportive housing for individuals who have experienced homelessness. The Trust acquires, finances and develops housing, partnering with renowned architecture firms to create stunning buildings that contribute to the revitalization of neighborhoods. They have pioneered a human-centered approach to design, building community assets that improve the public’s perception of and expectations for affordable housing. The Trust’s buildings aim to be cornerstones of diverse, inclusive neighborhoods where everyone has a place to call home. Permanent supportive housing — decent, affordable, community-based housing that offers voluntary support services — has proven to be the most effective at helping our most vulnerable neighbors build healthier lives. It is based on the simple idea that a home is the first step to ending homelessness. When you provide someone struggling with homelessness with a permanent home, it improves their quality life while reducing his or her reliance on costly emergency services. To help residents heal and pursue long-term stability, the Trust provides access to wrap-around case management and supportive ser-

vices, often within the same building. To help make these aspirational projects happen, Skid Row Housing Trust has developed strong relationships with lenders specializing in financing affordable housing. One such lender is Century, which has supported the Trust with financing toward some of its most iconic Downtown sites including the New Carver and Star Apartments. From acquisition loans to bridge and construction loans, Century has worked for more than 20 years to provide developers of affordable housing with service that responds to their specific needs. Most recently, Century provided acquisition financing to help build the Trust’s New Pershing Apartments in Downtown Los Angeles. The Trust renovated the Pershing Apartments to create 69 units of modern permanent supportive and affordable housing while preserving the building’s original Victorian facade, the last of its kind in Downtown Los Angeles. The New Pershing is LEED for Homes Gold certified, and has space for on-site supportive services and a spacious communal courtyard. The New Pershing also has 3,500 square feet of ground floor commercial space that will generate revenue to sustain supportive services for residents, making it a model for a truly mixed-use development that also preserves historic beauty. An Icon for the Future Pilgrim School Offers a Diverse City Experience in a Peaceful Setting

T

he Pilgrim School approach to education is summed up in a simple phrase: A Pilgrim student is involved, kind and known. Small classes, dedicated faculty, and a truly nurturing environment, combined with a rigorous, collegeprep curriculum in Grades K-12, are the hallmarks of a Pilgrim education. The distinctive Reggio-Emilia approach in Early Education, starting at age 2, emphasizes childcentered, play-based learning from the beginning. Pilgrim’s Downtown location also makes it possible for students to experience the city of Los Angeles as an extension of their classroom, and the classically beautiful campus offers a city experience in a peaceful setting. The heart of a Pilgrim education is the individual student. The wide range of curricular and extra-curricular possibilities, ranging from Computer Programming and Art Portfolio Development to AP Physics and Theater Arts, along with an extensive choice of sports teams and community service opportunities, means that every Pilgrim student will find something new to try, and many ways to be involved. Language education begins in kindergarten and every student studies either Mandarin or Spanish, with most achieving fluency by high school. The Mayflower House boarding program brings students from all over the world to the Commonwealth Avenue campus, greatly enriching the com-

munity. Pilgrim’s diversity teaches inclusion and empathy organically; Pilgrim students are known for their kindness and fairness, even on the sports field. That doesn’t mean that they don’t earn plenty of trophies – playing hard and playing fair are compatible at Pilgrim. Technology is integrated into and across the curriculum beginning in Early Education, and Pilgrim students learn to balance computer screens and hands-on experimental techniques. The beautiful Brown Family Fine Arts Center and the unique Visiting Writers and Artists programs allow all students to participate in a truly immersive education in the fine arts. In spring 2017, the Field of Dreams will be completed and Pilgrim students will have a fullsized athletic field to further expand the “everybody plays” sports program. A Pilgrim education gives students the skills to succeed and thrive in a changing world and creates strong individuals who are comfortable with themselves and their world. 100% of Pilgrim graduates are carefully matched to the college or university that best fits their individual profile, and are equipped with the skills they will need to create a unique and meaningful life. To learn more about Pilgrim School, please call (213) 355-5211 or visit pilgrim-school.org. Pilgrim School is a division of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles.
