CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE
SOCIETY IN LATE SEPTEMBER 2001, I FOUND MYSELF IN NEW YORK CITY JUST days after 9/11. I was there on assignment, documenting the story of a Bronx woman who lost her brother in the attacks, as well as visiting with a Manhattan chaplain who knew all too well the pain that tens of thousands of families were going through following the sudden, horrific loss of their loved ones. The chaplain, the late Andrew J. Weaver, told me something about grief that has brought me comfort in the years to come: Grief is the price of love, he said. You grieve because you loved. This week’s Health & Wellness feature (p. 64) discusses ways to move through grief. Author Elizabeth Berrien, who lost her husband and infant son within the span of two years, talks about her journey from grief to a new beginning. As with many of us who’ve experienced the despair of losing someone dear, coping is difficult. But there are ways to get through it. And thanks to the Reverend Weaver, my way has been to find solace in knowing that love lives on.

What do you love about your neighborhood?
St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors
Debbie Baldwin I love that my neighborhood in Ladue has an old-fashioned vibe. My kids can walk to school. I can walk to the market. I can even walk to work. We don’t do any of those things, of course, but it’s nice to know we can.
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Deadline March 10, 2014
Brittany Nay Living on the border of Clayton and University City gives my husband, John, and I the best of both worlds: access to amazing parks, restaurants and entertainment in downtown Clayton and The Loop.
Nominate a remarkable Saint Louisan that is 75 years+ and currently active in philanthropy, volunteer service or continuing/new career!
Lisa Watson

Last year, I moved to Webster Groves, where I’m enjoying all of the locally owned restaurants and the historic downtown. No more Olive Garden for this girl! There’s a friendly, small-town feel, and my commute is less than half of what it was in the outer suburbs. Delicious

residency program, says expanding the clinic’s comprehensive medical services to include preventive adult and pediatric dental care, dental hygiene, and diet and nutritional counseling will benefit patients’ overall health. “When preventive issues are overlooked, oral health problems can begin to affect general health. Examples of dental infections such as abscess and periodontal disease are possible links to cardiac issues, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and pregnancy complications. Preventive dental care provides the patient an opportunity to make decisions before big problems complicate the picture of their general health.” Through the anniversary gala, Mercy also is honoring longtime co-chairs and Mercy Health Foundation board members Peggy Ritter and Marsha Rusnack. Under their leadership, the Mardi Gras Masquerade has raised more than $4.2 million to support Mercy’s charity care programs. “Peggy’s and Marsha’s service to Mercy through their leadership and vision for the Mardi Gras Masquerade, along with their involvement on the Foundation’s board of directors, has been integral to our success over the past 10 years,” says Tanya Lieber, VP of
Mary Anne Gross, manager of Mercy’s JFK Clinic; and Dr. Stuart Waite, chair of Mercy’s department of dental medicine and director of the dental residency program
Mercy’s Health Foundation. “The 10th annual event will truly be a celebration of Peggy and Marsha, and the culmination of a wonderful partnership between two community leaders and Mercy.” And Ritter and Rusnack say this year’s celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever. The gala is coming full-circle, as its first year also featured a New Orleans’-style Mardi Gras theme—along with special guest Jim Belushi. Continued on page 76

ERCY HOSPITAL CONTINUES TO STAND by its commitment to provide compassionate service to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. To bolster this effort, the hospital will hold its 10th annual Mardi Gras Masquerade on March 1 at The Chase Park Plaza. The themed gala raises much-needed funds that help provide health care to uninsured and underinsured residents of St. Louis County, St. Charles County and the surrounding region. This year’s event will be no exception, as it aids an important cause for Mercy: the JFK Clinic. Because Mercy has identified a void in dental care access for uninsured and underinsured patients, the hospital will use gala contributions to help integrate preventive adult and pediatric dental care at the clinic. “In many ways, the JFK Clinic is the most basic example of the Sisters of Mercy’s mission at work,” says clinic manager Mary Anne Gross. “The clinic exists to serve as many patients as we can in a compassionate, healing environment, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.” Dr. Stuart Waite, chair of Mercy’s department of dental medicine and director of the dental

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ST. LOUIS!
BY BRITTANY NAY
R
EVELERS WILL ‘FEEL THEIR temperatures rising’ as a 25-foot flaming heart, fireworks and the city’s hottest musicians kick off St. Louis’ 250th birthday party with a bang on Art Hill in Forest Park. Touted as ‘Burnin’ Love,’ the signature celebration is one of four stl250 events from Feb. 14 to 17 set to honor the city’s founding. The red-hot opening will be a spectacle to behold, says Erin Budde , executive director of stl250, as a crowd of 25,000 is expected to gather for the once-in-alifetime festivities running from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. The heart-pounding, admission-free festival will feature two performance stages backing up to the Grand Basin, with the giant fire-shooting heart in the center of the action. Any frigid temperatures should melt away amid the fiery heart, colorful light show, flame-shooting cannons and fire-dancers. And if that isn’t enough, attendees can warm up by dancing to the music of seasoned favorite, St. Louis Social Club. Guests also will have the opportunity to partake in culinary favorites, from sweet and savory snacks to a lineup of beverages, as well as interact in various activities, such as stepping into
a historic St. Louis scene for a keepsake photo. And in the spirit of love for the city—and the day of love—festival-goers will be invited to help break the Guinness Book World Record for simultaneous engagements by ‘popping the question’ or ‘re-popping the question.’ Couples registering on stl250.org will have the chance to win prizes, including a diamond ring, and all of the lovebirds will be serenaded by an Elvis impersonator’s rendition of Burning Love during the event. “It’s going to be such a neat night and something that we think could become a tradition in St. Louis,” Budde says. The celebration continues with The Biggest Birthday Bash Feb. 14, 15 and 17 at Missouri History Museum. The free family-friendly event will highlight 250 years of regional heritage with interactive multimedia exhibits. Additional festivities will include live musical performances, local fare, and art activities, such as cupcake decorating, birthday hat-making and face-painting. The History Museum also will play host to The Biggest Birthday Ball, a cocktail party featuring live music and dance performances, St. Louis-centric food stations and re-enactors, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 16. Playing to a projected audience of 800 will be the St. Louis All-Stars, including blues diva Kim
Massie and Theo Pe o p l e s o f T h e Four Tops and The Temptations. “They will be performing St. Louis favorites, from Joplin through Nelly,” Budde says. Guests can gain entry to the ball with a $100 ticket, access to a second level of festivities with a $250 VIP lounge pass, or become a patron for $500. Another highlight of the birthday weekend will be the St. Louis Historical Reenactment at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 at St. Louis City Hall. The program will trace back to the city’s founding, with local dignitaries joining the U.S. Ambassadors from Spain and France, an envoy from Quebec and the Chief of the Osage Nation. Interested attendees can reserve their free seats at stl250.org. But that’s not all—the celebration continues all year long as the city’s signature institutions pay homage to St. Louis in their own way through more than 100 events, Budde notes. Check out stl250.org for a full listing of festivities.

The app encourages St. Louisans to learn more about the city’s landmarks, tell their own stories and post photos of themselves with the cakes at their various locales. Sound like a sweet deal? Let the games begin!

The Birchfields enjoy experiencing small-town life in a big city. A short stroll down Lindbergh Boulevard to Clayton Road, and all of their favorite shops and restaurants are right at their fingertips. Kathy Birchfield, a homemaker and former real estate agent, and her husband, Blake, an insurance broker, also chose Ladue for its top-notch schools. Their kids, Alice and Kathleen, are students at MICDS, while Davison and Millie attend Conway Elementary, and Jimmie goes to Ladue Early Childhood Center. Kathy told us more about why they love Ladue. Where do you like to hang out? We try to be big supporters of the small businesses along Clayton Road: Imagination Toys, Giddyup Jane, Vie, Ladue Florist and Mister Guy. We love the small-community feel—when you go into one of the shops or the Schnucks, everyone recognizes you and says hi to you.

Gina Bernstein says she dreamt of Clayton life while living in the Washington University dorms. Now, her family is living the dream—Gina, an investment banker with Stern Brothers & Co., and husband Michael, a Saint Louis University Hospital plastic and reconstructive surgeon, live in Clayton with their three children: Ethan and Sam, who attend Wydown Middle School; and Sage, who currently is at Glenridge Elementary. We spoke with Gina to find out more about why her family loves Clayton. Where do you like to hang out? I work in Clayton, so I eat there practically every day at places like Roxane and Coastal Bistro. We also enjoy Forest Park, and all the things it has to offer, like the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo. What’s Clayton’s best-kept secret? The appreciation for the parks and for art. The sculptures that are around town and adorn some of our parks truly make for a lovely place to live.

Living in Frontenac for almost nine years, the Rhone family treasures the community’s close-knit connections. Angela and her husband Eric, VP and CEO of Visions Management Group, respectively, have three children: Eric II, a student at Meramec; and Arlington and Eldridge, who both attend Conway Elementary. Angela tells us more about life in Frontenac: What are your favorite spots in Frontenac? We love to walk down Clayton Road to go to FroYo. I love shopping at Esther and Melanie’s, which I seem to go to every other day. We eat at Bricktop’s and Brio; and of course, Schnucks for fresh produce. What do you love about Frontenac? Our community has a care calendar online to provide meals for people who need help or may be ill. We all take turns helping each other out. What’s Frontenac’s best-kept secret? There’s a woman at the Frontenac Schnucks named Miss Pearl. She is the nicest person you’ll ever meet. She knows my name, my boys’ names, and she’s always asking how we are.

When the Pisarkiewicz family was searching for a new home 10 years ago, Webster-Shrewsbury native Dave initially didn’t want to move so far from the city. But Chicago-born Jennifer convinced him that Chesterfield wasn’t as far as he imagined—in fact, their proximity to Highway 40 made his commute an unbeatable 10 minutes! Along with kids David and Lauren, they’re happy Chesterfield residents to this day. We asked Jennifer what they love most.
Come see our model apartments. You’ll find one just right for you—the right size, the right design, the right comfort, the right carefree living. What are your favorite hangout spots in the neighborhood? When we moved here, we happened to stumble across Veritas—the Stitt family had just opened it up as a wine-pairing and food shop. They’ve since expanded the menu, and their son went to culinary school and has returned as executive chef. We also love Annie Gunn’s for anniversaries and birthdays.
FAMILY PHOTO AND CHESTERFIELD AMPHITHEATER PHOTO BY SARAH CROWDER
What do you like to do on the weekends? We love to go over to the Chesterfield Amphitheater and to all the trails. They’re working to connect all of the trails in the area with the Levee Trail project. The City of Chesterfield has done a great job with its urban planning—they’re very analytical before they make decisions, and they take their time and do it right, and things are kept up really nicely.
Neighborhood Notes: Peggy Liggett, Laura McCarthy Real Estate I have lived in Chesterfield for 30 years, and I’ve watched it develop into a very vibrant community. It has recreational facilities, wonderful restaurants and shopping galore. It also has something for everybody in every price range when it comes to housing. It’s very friendly, too: It’s not a neighborhood where people are standoffish.

Among other things, Jill Solomon lists the central location as one of the major selling points that led her family to picturesque Town & Country almost five years ago. Jill, a speech pathologist, and her husband, Todd, a mortgage banker with Delmar Financial, have four children: twins Julia and Steven, and Lila, who are students at Mason Ridge Elementary; and Rose, who attends Shirlee Green Preschool. We spoke with Jill to find out what makes this neighborhood the place her family calls home. Why did you move to Town & Country? We had our fourth child and outgrew the area we were in. When we drove around, we felt like Town & Country embodied a Norman Rockwell painting—tall, leafy trees and beautiful parks. Where do you like to hang out in your neighborhood? We love Longview Farm Park and Drace Park, and we always go to the nearby Starbucks and Straub’s.

After living in WILDWOOD FOR ALMOST 30 years, the Gitto family enjoys how the neighborhood just keeps getting better. Successful restaurateur Charlie Gitto and his wife, Paula, raised their kids there—Amy, Charlie III, Suzanne and Anthony—and now they are sharing what they love about their neighborhood with their grandkids. Charlie spoke with us more about what is special in Wildwood.
Where do you like to hang out in your neighborhood? Babler State Park… and the nearby Charlie Gitto’s “From The Hill,” of course!
Neighborhood Notes: Mark Gellman, The Gellman Team, Coldwell Banker Premier Wildwood is a fantastic community with a mix of small homes and large estates. Many homes have larger lots and incredible views, all within minutes to major shopping, highways and restaurants. The outdoors abound with parks, reserves and hiking trails.

The Wild family was immediately sold on Creve Coeur for its great schools, beautiful parks and walkability to restaurants and shopping. Kristen Wild, executive director of the Ladue Education Foundation, and her husband, Steve, an attorney at Thompson Coburn, have loved living in their neighborhood for 11 years. Their kids are Zach, who attends Ladue Middle School, and Jessica, who goes to Ladue Fifth Grade Center. Kristen told us more about Creve Coeur.
Gulf shores and il bel lago photos by bryan schraier. family photo by sarah crowder
Where do you like to hang out in Creve Coeur? We love the area parks: Beirne Park and Millenium Park. The Dielmann Recreation Complex also is a big attraction for us, with the Creve Coeur Ice Arena and a golf course. We also enjoy shows at Skip Viragh Center for the Arts; and we love to work out at the Jewish Community Center. Some of our favorite family restaurants are Gulf Shores, Stir-Crazy, Granite City Food and Brewery, and Cuisine d’Art. For date night, we like Bristol and Il Bel Lago, and Oberweis and FroYo for ice cream. What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? Malcolm Terrace Park is hidden away off Ladue Road. It has great trails, a fun creek to explore and a playground.
Neighborhood Notes: Judy Grand, Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty Creve Coeur, centrally located with easy access to interstates 40 and 270, is a beautiful community with established subdivisions offering condos, to Mid-Century ranches, to new stately homes. The nationally ranked Ladue Schools, Parkway Schools, plus proximity to so many private schools, is another big draw. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family.

2014 Ladue News Platinum List Is Going On Now Cast your vote for the finest local restaurants and retailers and most exceptional service providers in St. Louis, and propel them to the top of this prominent list. Originally from the Springfield, Ill., area, Alex and Meghan Haycraft moved to St. Louis in 2011 looking for a home that would give them a taste of the outdoors, while still offering a convenient location. They found it in their craftsman home in Manchester, where they frequently welcome Alex’s 4-year-old son, Myles. Alex is a web developer at Soft Surroundings, who also plays in the band Park. Meghan is a scientific IT customer advocate at Monsanto. The Haycrafts also are raising two dogs, Dexter and Felix. We asked Meghan about the neighborhood highlights.
Winners will be revealed in the March 21 Platinum List edition of Ladue News.
Why did you move to Manchester? I grew up on 7 acres of land, so I was pretty used to having privacy and space. Our home backs the woods so you can’t see anyone behind us—it’s peaceful with tall, mature trees. We see a lot of wildlife: We have a deer family that will hang out in the cul de sac, and Myles loves it when we see owls! The neighborhood also has a pool, tennis courts, a playground and a huge field, so those were nice amenities. Do you have any favorite hangout spots in the neighborhood? That’s another part of the reason we moved here—we’re 25 minutes or less from everything, and we live about three minutes from The Corner Pub & Grill, which we love to visit for games, and they have this really amazing Drunken Potato Soup. We also like Wild Agave, a Mexican restaurant. On nice days, we walk the dogs at Castlewood State Park or walk them up to Fritz’s Frozen Custard and sit outside.

Manchester has that hometown feel; it’s like living in a small town, but you’re in a metropolitan area. They host homey events like Manchester Days with homecoming and parades; and Paul A. Schroeder Park has wonderful family meeting areas, trails and summertime events. Manchester is most known for its historical downtown on Manchester Road and its central location.

Des Peres
The Muths By Brittany Nay
Where do you like to hang out in Des Peres? The boys like walking over to The Lodge. There are lots of activities there, such as baseball and swimming. We also frequent the area parks: Des Peres and Sugar Creek. What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? The Village Bar—then again, that’s not exactly a well-kept secret!
Neighborhood Notes: Carla Borgard, Coldwell Banker Gundaker Close to highways 270 and 40, and Manchester Road, Des Peres has everything anyone would ever need or want: West County Mall, restaurants, medical facilities, banking and grocery stores. Des Peres City Hall boasts a great park hosting many civic and community events; and friendly people, wonderful family neighborhoods and two excellent school districts— Kirkwood and Parkway—help make it a great place to live.

The family of four includes Sherry, a nursing administrator for Washington University’s Sleep Medicine Center; her husband, Rich, senior director of marketing and new product development at International Mulch Company; and their sons, Jacob and Andrew, who enjoy all the social activities offered in their neighborhood and at the boys’ school, Saint Gerard Magella. Sherry spoke with us more about her family’s favorites in Des Peres.

By Blaise Hart-Schmidt
Loving the small-town feel in a bigger city, the Schulte family has called Glendale home for more than eight years. James, who works in corporate finance at GE Capital, and Ann, a stayat-home mom, love seeing neighbors of all ages walking the streets and enjoying the community. They have three children: Will, Harrison and Louise. James and Ann tell us more about what they love to do in Glendale. What’s Glendale’s best-kept secret? Hanneke’s is a great small grocer. They do catering and have sandwiches, and you see kids hanging out there after school getting candy. We go up there for little necessities. They have a great lunch, and coffee and donuts on the weekend. What’s your favorite Glendale family tradition? There are a lot of community events. There’s a Christmas treelighting event, a Jazz Fest and an Ice Cream Social. A lot of streets are big on the block parties. People will block off streets and have bounce houses. People take pride in their block.

Glendale is a small community with benefits from both Kirkwood and Webster Groves. It’s kind of like Mayberry. I’ve lived in Glendale for almost 23 years—there are nice walking sidewalks, a little grocery store and some gift shops. It’s always been a safe community, and it was recently named the best place to live in Missouri.

The time is NOW For almost 15 years, the Chulicks have enjoyed the sense of community among their Kirkwood neighbors. The neighborhood’s charm, historical houses and friendly residents make them feel at home. Kim Chulick volunteers for local nonprofits, including Gateway Children’s Charity; while her husband, Tom, is chairman and CEO at UMB Bank; and son T.J. attends Whitfield School. Their Boxer, Sophie, also is part of the family. Kim talked to us more about life in Kirkwood. Where do you like to hang out in Kirkwood? Café Provencal, Sapore Italian Café, and One 19 North Tapas and Wine Bar are our three favorite restaurants. We also like to go to the farmers’ market in the spring and summer, and run and bike in Kirkwood Park. What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? There are so many shops, like Blush and Paperdolls, that are a little under the radar, but have cute women’s fashion.

Tim and Callie Halls moved to Webster Groves 15 years ago, falling in love with the Victorian homes, strong school district and small-town feel. Tim works as a principal at Moneta; and Callie stays at home caring for their daughters, Chloe and Ellie, and their dog, Daisie. Tim and Callie tell us what it’s like to live in Webster Groves. What are your favorite Webster Groves hangouts? Our favorite place to go is Robust Wine Bar. We go to La Cantina all the time, too. Every month, it seems like there’s some sort of outdoor community event going on, and we love those too—the Jazz Festival, Art & Air and the 5K runs. What’s your family’s favorite Webster Groves tradition? The houses on the stretch of Clark Avenue between Bompart Avenue and Glen Road go all out on their Halloween decorations every year, and there are hordes of trick-or-treaters. Most homeowners set up fire pits in the front yard and have parties, especially when the weather is decent.
Neighborhood Notes: Wendy Hermann, Prudential Alliance REALTORS Webster Groves has a hometown feel. The school district is very strong, and a lot of people are drawn to the variety of homes and architecture. Properties don’t tend to stay on the market very long. Webster also has great restaurants, venues and shops, like The Block, Milagro, Llewelyn’s, Robust, The Repertory Theatre and The Initial Design. The Fourth of July parade and festival are always huge celebrations for Webster.

The Pickups
A little something for everyone you love. Perfect for Valentine’s Day! By Blaise Hart-Schmidt
What the Pickups love most about Brentwood, where they’ve lived for almost a year, is the convenience and family-oriented community. Sarah, who owns a public relations and communications firm; and her husband, Boyd, a broadcast operations manager at Higher Education Channel Television, moved to the neighborhood from the Central West End, hoping to give their toddler, Sebastian, more space to play. Sarah gave us a glimpse into what life in Brentwood is like. What are your favorite Brentwood spots? Sebastian goes to Little Fishes Swim School. In the summer, we’ll walk to swimming. We go to the Maplewood Public Library at least once a week. It’s super tiny but it’s old-school, and everyone is really nice. What’s the best way to spend the day in Brentwood? We might run and grab a coffee, go get something to eat from Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, and spend the morning at Memorial Park and take a walk on some of the paths. The parks are all connected by the pathways and creeks, so we walk the neighborhood and spend the day outside.

Brentwood residents love their neighborhood for its strong community and easy access. Brentwood has a great ice rink, and people flock to Carl’s Drive-In and Frank Papa’s Ristorante. Everyone waves to everyone—I never drive down the street without waving to someone I know.

What are the best Richmond Heights’ hangouts? We’re at Forest Park all the time: biking, working out or going to the museum. We eat at Fozzie’s Sandwich Emporium, and go to Mr. Wizard’s (in nearby Maplewood) during the summer. The Heights is really affordable and has a library attached, which is great. What is Richmond Heights’ best-kept secret? Every year, we go to Garden Heights for plants and flowers. They have fabulous service, knowledgeable people and a great variety of plants. We can go down there and bring a leaf that has something wrong with it, and they’ll tell us what we need.
Neighborhood Notes: Steve Engel, Elizabeth Real Estate Richmond Heights is a very established neighborhood that has accessibility to a variety of things. It’s right next to Clayton, Brentwood and Ladue, and is close to the city. It has a variety of commercial businesses, restaurants and shops; and borders Forest Park on the east end. It also has a variety of architecture and housing, from luxury homes in Hampton Park to affordable homes and condos.

What are your favorite places to visit in University City? We’re close to the Loop and all the restaurants there, Kayak Coffee, Forest Park and Washington University. We love Bobo Noodle House—it’s one of our favorite restaurants in the city. And my kids love Blueberry Hill because of the food, the staff and all of the memorabilia, and also Mission Taco and Seoul Taco. What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? Our neighborhood itself has all these beautiful gardens and mature trees. They call our neighborhood the Urban Oasis, and that’s something that people who live here are very proud of: It’s urban, but you’re surrounded by this beautiful natural beauty.
Neighborhood Notes: Mary Matyiko, Laura McCarthy Real Estate I’ve lived here for more than 10 years; and my husband and I met in University City. We love it: We’re on our third house and have three kids. The thing that’s unique about it is the diversity, which gives a great energy to the city. We have a variety of house styles and price ranges, so there’s something for everyone here, and a story behind every house. Also, the location can’t be beat: It’s walkable to the music scene, restaurants, Forest Park, entertainment and museums.

Olivette
The Silvers By Julia Christensen
More of what’s in print…
online. Search area homes. Find more Distinctive Properties. Answer the question... “What did it sell for?” See what’s new on the market.
The Silver family, who has lived in Olivette for the last seven-and-a-half years, says that people of Olivette are what makes the area so special. Laura, a freelance writer, and her husband Michael, an attorney with Husch Blackwell, have two kids, twins Katie and Ryan, and a dog, Logan. The children attend Old Bonhomme School, which Laura describes as a great and diverse place for children to get a quality public education in a supportive setting. That type of education is one of the main factors that led the family to move to Olivette. We spoke with Laura to find out a few of her other favorite aspects of the area. Where do you like to hang out in Olivette? We love Sugarfire Smokehouse—that’s our favorite new addition—and we definitely use Stacy Park and all the activities there. It’s much more of a community, so you make a lot of friends in the neighborhood. What’s Olivette’s best-kept secret? Our chief of police is truly unbelievable—he’s present everywhere, and he sets a really nice tone for the community. The kids know him and the police, and it’s a good environment. He creates a safe feeling for your kids and family.
Neighborhood Notes: It’s a relaxed, beautiful, diverse community with a fascinating history and a bright future—and with Stacy Park, an incredible place for people of all ages, it’s a really neat, established community. It’s a place where people enjoyed growing up so much that a lot are trying to move back.

Central West End
The Marshes By Julia Christensen
When Don and Julie Marsh think about all the houseand yard-work they no longer have to worry about, they laugh. Don, a longtime journalist and a St. Louis Public Radio host, and Julie have two adult children, Bill and Julia. And while the couple doesn’t have any pets of their own, they describe the area as pet-friendly—a convenient perk for times spent pet-sitting ‘grand-dogs.’ The couple moved to the Central West End some three years ago only to discover how convenient city living can be. “You can’t not go,” says Julie of all the nearby eateries. “It’s almost silly to make dinner!” Why did you move to the Central West End? We became empty-nesters; and when we looked for someplace smaller, we became familiar with this 100-year-old co-op. We fell in love with the building. It’s a great location—you can’t beat the Central West End. Where do you like to hang out in the neighborhood? Forest Park, The Chase Park Plaza movie theater, the Public Library (Schlafly branch), Dressel’s Public House, Herbie’s Vintage ‘72 and Llywelyn’s Pub, just to name a few.
Neighborhood Notes: Kevin Hurley, Janet McAfee Real Estate The Central West End is wonderful because it’s walkable: You have grocery stores, clothing boutiques, plenty of restaurants, and Forest Park is your backyard. And unlike some other neighborhoods, the Central West End is a historic district—it’s protected, so you can’t tear down the old buildings.

T
o assist in the areas where legalities and finances overlap, family law firm Hais, Hais, Goldberger & Lambson has brought in a new, dual-role team member: a legal professional who also is a certified divorce financial analyst. “People go to lawyers for divorces, and they go to financial planners for financial planning—but sometimes, people need to combine disciplines for specific purposes,” says attorney Sam Hais. “There are contingencies and possible pitfalls that are peculiar to many of our life situations, and divorce is certainly one of those. To be more specific, it’s not just a matter of coming in and planning what documents and arrangements you need; it’s how to plan financially for the short, medium and long term with regards to the repercussions related to divorce, which are many and varied.” This service begins with Hais’ new legal professional, Ellen Hilboldt. And if having an employee like Hilboldt serve in this dual role is as beneficial as planned, the service may expand into future offices in the greater Metropolitan area, according to the Haises. “What that means practically to the client is this:
Someone comes in and says, Should I sell my house? Should I keep my house? What’s going to happen if I keep the house and I do certain things with my financial planning? … [And this] will at least give them an educated view of what they can expect, and it gives them the ability to make informed choices,” says Susan Hais. The Haises explain that this “educated view” is beneficial not just for their client, but the pair seeking the divorce—and that it could possibly help maintain professionalism between attorneys. “Rather than behaving in a professional manner, [some] lawyers file all kinds of hostile motions and generally behave in an uncivil fashion,” Sam explains. “We’ve always taken the position that it’s not necessary to be hostile about this, and the person who is a lawyer ought to conduct herself or himself in a professional manner. If both sides are clear about what their goals are, sometimes those generalized kinds of conflicts don’t get the chance to arise in the first place.” Sam explains that having a certified divorce financial analyst within the office can better help clients prepare and plan for their financial future
Susan and Sam Hais
by using the same strategic planning used in other areas of the divorce process. Privacy and budget also are perks of this new system, according to Susan, who notes that the firm always has been able to outsource a financial pro—but using someone in-house makes more sense for the client economically and in regards to client-lawyer confidentiality.

Utah dad files suit over alleged wrongful adoption Paid Advertisement
St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C
We have spent a lot of time writing about fathers who have gone to extreme lengths to make sure they are involved in the lives of their children -- often through legal means. One way that many of our readers might not have considered involves a section of the law that is usually levied against organized crime, rather than child custody issues. The attorney involved in the Utah case admits that invoking RICO -- the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act -- might be a long shot. However, he says, several groups and individuals conspired to have a child that the man fathered be illegally adopted without his knowledge. Apparently, the child’s mother became pregnant with the man’s child when she was still married to another man. The woman told the father in this case that she planned to put the child up for adoption. The man said
54
February 7, 2014 {LadueNews.com}
he did not want that to happen, and that he would care for the child by himself if he had to do so. The man says that the baby would be born via C-section on a certain date; however, he says, the woman actually gave birth two weeks before that and immediately gave the child up to adoption. By the time he learned of the baby’s birth, the child had already been placed with adoptive parents. The man and his attorney say their legal action is, at least in part, designed to draw attention to fathers’ rights. It isn’t clear how the case will turn out and whether the case will actually make it to trial, or survive a motion to dismiss, but his lawsuit has certainly received a great deal of public attention because of the sensitivity of this issue.

Michelle HouseConnaghan Green Cordonnier & House I have learned that there is no law school class that can substitute for real-life courtroom experience. I believe that the greatest power in the courtroom is not the facts of the case or the applicable law, but the preparation and presentation of the case in an efficient and persuasive manner. That process is fine-tuned and enhanced for me with each case I handle. My law school provided me the tools to be successful, but it is my experience that has made me successful.

rom divorce to family law and courtroom litigation, local attorneys say there are a multitude of hot topics on the horizon, largely the result of an increasingly digital world, shifts in societal norms and an ever-changing economy. In an inescapably electronic world, Alisse Camazine of Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal says 2014 cases will be rife with social media evidence. “Electronic communication is becoming more and more of an issue. There’s Instant Chat, Snapchat, Facebook…and there’s always going to be more of them.” Her firm is seeing a skyrocketing number of divorce cases where electronic communication is a major portion of the evidence pool. And as it throws a wrench into so many cases, that results in changes to the way lawyers are practicing, she says. “Electronic communication always is going to be a difficult hurdle.” Kirk Stange of Stange Law Firm says paternity is the big new case clogging dockets. “Paternity cases are the 21st century divorce,” he declares. With 40 percent of kids being born out of wedlock, parents who split up more often have paternity issues. “Each year, we see more and more paternity cases. It’s the most growing area of family law.” Erik Solverud of Spencer Fane notes there’s a strong uptick in shareholder and partner disputes. “We are seeing these cases more and more now. More claims are being filed, sometimes leading to litigation and other times arbitrations, based on what the shareholder agreements might have in place,” Solverud explains. Like many other service-oriented industries, the unstable economy is affecting law firms, according to Sam Hais of Hais, Hais, Goldberger and Lambson. Whether it is a job shortage or a fear of inflation, people are looking to save dollars and time when it comes to hiring an attorney. “People are feeling compelled to seek out the best value. They are looking for services that arise from lawyers who have tried-and-true experience, rather than going for the lowestcost lawyers who are doing every type of law practice.” Clients are

We the People... conducting thorough interviews with multiple potential attorneys to avoid wasting time with the wrong lawyer, Hais adds. Another strong trend in family law is the emergence of more firms with certified divorce financial analysts, Hais continues. Such professionals can provide legal services that include counseling and strategic planning related to financial analysis. “Financial planning isn’t just a matter of getting ready for divorce, it involves five to 10 years of planning, which can be done if the law firm has a trained person to offer those services,” Hais notes. In an effort to escape the backlog of an overworked judicial system, clients also are seeking out the services of special masters, Hais says. The attorneys can sit in as a private judge and make recommendations on a case. “Rather than Kirk Stange, Stange Law Firm having to wait months—or sometimes even years—for a trial, if clients can agree on a special master, the case doesn’t get dragged on and on,” Hais explains. Despite a variety of changes in local law offices and courtrooms, Hais says finding the most experienced and efficient lawyer at the lowest cost remains the ultimate goal for both clients and firms.

Stange Law Firm, PC
This last year has been extremely busy for us. Years ago, we decided to confine our scope of services strictly to divorce and divorcerelated matters, combined with the use of adjunct services of trusted professionals participating in areas of ancillary services, which have become more and more critical in today’s complex society. We recently added an in-house practice member to focus on divorce financial planning, a credentialed holder of certification in that discipline; and we are thrilled to offer our clients that forward-thinking advantage. We think it will be a quantum leap in the practice of divorce law.

Founded by Kirk and Paola Stange in 2007, our firm expanded in 2013 to include the new West County and Union locations, bringing the count to 19 attorneys and eight offices in Missouri and Illinois. This expansion is only the mark of a greater accomplishment. In 2013, attorneys from Stange Law Firm—Kirk Stange, Paola Stange, John Kershman and Sara Marler—were named as four of only 24 ‘Rising Stars’ by Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers magazine. The choice of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements.

liv ing Creative Grieving
A New Beginning By Connie Mitchell
Q&A with Elizabeth Berrien
E
lizabeth Berrien experienced more pain and loss by the time she was 27 than many of us will have to deal with in our lifetime. Within two years, she lost both her infant son to stillbirth, and her husband, a Special Forces soldier, to the war in Afghanistan. After the initial shock and weeks spent barely moving from her bed, Berrien began to emerge. “In dealing with my own stages of grief and healing, I found that the grieving journey is not a one-sided, rigid process of pain, hopelessness and despair,” she says. “A devastating loss is not only an ending, but also a new beginning.”
Berrien, the author of Creative Grieving: A Hip Chick’s Path from Loss to Hope, recently spoke with the Ladue News about her journey and how she is working to help others who’ve experienced loss. You speak of grief as ‘a new beginning,’ yet so many people seem unable to see beyond the pain. How did you get to that point, and how are you helping others do the same? There are definitely different ways to move through grief. I really encourage people to do whatever resonates with them. But it does involve connecting with community and having the ability to find new passion in life, which doesn’t happen right away. So think about what makes you get up in the morning. Is it your child? Is it a new purpose? Are you volunteering somewhere? Say you lost someone to cancer, for instance. Maybe you’d want to volunteer for a cancer organization and do something close to your heart. After my losses, the two things that really helped

me not only survive but thrive were my dedication to raising my daughter (who was just 4 months old when Elizabeth’s husband died) and finding new purpose in starting a support group and in opening a center to help other people through grief. You started Soul Widows, a support community for young widows; and also opened The Respite, a nonprofit center for those who are grieving. A couple months after I lost my husband in August 2009, I began looking for resources for young widows, and it was hard to find something that felt like it was appropriate for my type of
HEALTH & WELLNESS
“I FOUND THAT THE GRIEVING JOURNEY IS NOT A ONE-SIDED, RIGID PROCESS OF PAIN, HOPELESSNESS AND DESPAIR...A DEVASTATING LOSS IS NOT ONLY AN ENDING, BUT ALSO A NEW BEGINNING.” loss. I had just moved to Charlotte, N.C., to stay with my sister while I got back on my feet, and I found a support group of both men and women who had lost a spouse. But I craved just being with women because I felt there was more of a bond and understanding in the way women communicate. So I gradually came up with the idea of starting my own group. I started Soul Widows by putting a website together for it (soulwidows.org). I began getting emails from women in different parts of the country, and I realized almost instantly how much it was really needed. Since then, it’s gradually expanded. It’s a safe space for women to share their stories and concerns, ask each other questions and provide support. It’s really beautiful because a lot of the
women create friendships that are really solid, and they keep in touch with each other. Then the idea for The Respite came shortly. I met my first partner, Mandy Eppley, who is a licensed professional counselor, and we had a lot of similar views about grief and healing. Our idea was to open a space with a bunch of different resources in one place for people who are grieving. Our other partner, Cindy Ballaro, then helped us get our nonprofit status and put us on a solid foundation. (therespite.org) The Respite provides a wide array of services; and in your book, you write about grief as a holistic experience that involves mind, body and soul. Grief is a soul experience on every level. In the first few months, I felt like I had the flu. Every part of your body aches just because of the gravity of your emotions and what you’re trying to process. It’s such an ethereal experience to realize you’re never going to see someone again. It can even affect your faith—a lot of women have come to me and said they’re angry at God, or they don’t know what they believe in anymore. Emotionally, you feel completely crushed and confused. That’s why we combined services at The Respite. If someone has a massage, it calms the nervous system, which can affect your emotions. Or if you have some talk therapy, it can help calm
your muscles and release tension in your body. It’s all very interconnected. We emphasize full-self care. That seems so obvious, but it’s not necessarily the typical way grief is addressed in our society. Grief is not something people are comfortable with in general. Our culture is based on instant satisfaction and happiness. It doesn’t allow a lot of space for people to be how they need to be when they’re grieving. People are afraid of grief. But there’s so much to the grief process, and it takes a long time—sometimes years—to get through. And that’s confusing for a lot of people. But it’s completely normal to have waves of grief on anniversaries or have experiences when you’re deeply hurting. That’s why it’s a passion of mine to help normalize grief. It’s a natural part of life—everybody experiences loss at some point.

PEARL & the Wells Family BY LISA WATSON

O
NCE UPON A TIME…RITA WELLS AND HER HUSBAND, David, were looking for a new kitten. They had always been ‘cat people,’ and had nurtured a pair of Tonkinese cats for almost 20 years. Rita, who retired as the Saint Louis Art Museum’s director of retail sales a few years ago, visited Animal House Fund several times, and in the process, got to know the rescue’s director, Brandyn Jones. “You’re not allowed to just walk in and adopt on the spur of the moment; it’s a process. She really wants to place them carefully,” she says. “And one day Brandyn called and said, I have your cat! She just came in.” Wells returned several more times to visit the kitten, a baby calico, before making her final decision. She and her husband were planning to move from their Clayton townhouse, and she originally wanted to

be settled in before bringing home a new member of the family. “I visited her several times before I took her home, but one day I said, No, I can’t put her back in the cage. She’s got to come home.” Pearl was originally found in Forest Park, and has meshed well with the Wells family—a fact that Wells attributes largely to Jones’ holistic approach and expert care in match-making. “I wanted a very friendly and easy-going cat,” she notes. Pearl is very different from the Wellses’ previous Tonkinese cats, who she says talked a lot and were more aloof. “This cat is not aloof or restrained in any way! Our last cats got to be older and quieter; and when they’re little, they’re so vivacious and rambunctious,” she says. “Pearl has all the behavior of a kitten: She’s broken things and eaten flowers—she’s very lively. One day I was making a salad, and I took the bowl out and left the kitchen; and when I came back, there she was asleep in the bowl!” Now that Pearl has lived with the Wellses for three months and been through their several recent moves, life is about to finally settle into a normal routine. “She came to us in our townhouse in Clayton that we lived in for 32 years. We had a flood in our new apartment before we moved in, so she was in a hotel for a month; and before that, she was at Animal House. So she’s a little confused, but she’s so lively and we love her,” Wells says. While the family is used to having two cats, it’s just Pearl for the time being, Wells notes. “I go to California often, and I can’t take more than one cat with me on the airplane. But who knows? We may succumb to another cat…” And if she does, she’ll know exactly where to find one.

Party Politics
I
T’S OFFICIAL: I AM COMPLETELY submerged in the teenage years. Due to a family-planning strategy that revolved around white wine and Cardinal home games, Cranky, Whiny, and Punch are now 16, 15 and 13, respectively. And there’s lots of fun stuff happening: We have a licensed driver, a permit driver and a 13-year-old who likes to back my car out of our driveway ‘for practice.’ I have to say it’s strange imagining the little girl who once dove—yes, dove—off the top of a slide (“because it was faster”) behind the wheel of a car. And so they drive. They go to parties. They drive to parties. I sleep like a baby—and by that, I mean I wake up every two hours screaming. One thought that eases my mind—or disturbs me profoundly, I can’t decide which—is remembering how I was at that age. We managed to cause just enough trouble so that we felt dangerous but never required—well, rarely required—intervention by the authorities. I did have a party once where one of my friends (we’ll call him Dave) put any small appliance that was within reach behind the rear tires of guests’ cars, so, well, I’m sure you can figure it out. Yeah…that was funny. One year, after the local police broke up a party I was having, my mother found a full keg in the woods behind our house. Not realizing what it was, she offered our trash men $20 to take it away. Needless to say, they were only too happy to oblige. So now, I’m the parent looking for the proverbial keg in the woods. And there are three distinct schools of thought on how to parent the situation: 1) Don’t look for the keg. The odds are overwhelming that everything will be OK, and
Debbie Baldwin
TANGENTIAL THINKER you’re causing yourself unnecessary stress, not to mention perpetuating the delusion that you are actually in control of the situation. 2) Glance around for the keg. This is something akin to the plain-sight rule in police procedure. One would hope the kids are not completely dismissive of our authority. A modicum of discretion, a bow to the titular king, is appreciated. 3) Hunt for the keg like a bloodhound on the trail of an escaped convict. Now, there is no doubt you can win this battle—search rooms, breathalize kids, show up at parties or prohibit them altogether—but the effort is Herculean, and the cost of winning the battle may be losing the war. In the end, all three are equally effective—if, by effective, I mean not effective. Really, the strategy has much more to do with the parent than the child. I find most people parent the same way they host dinner parties: Do you order pizzas and put on the game, or serve a four-course meal and use place cards? Most of us fall somewhere in-between. I’m not exactly sure where I land on the spectrum, but I have a hunch. I’d better choose a strategy soon, though. Then we need to address dating. How much time do you have?

O QUOTE THE actors (I’m guessing) right before they shot the piebaking scene, Let’s just get this over with! Here is my list of grievances: 1) Kate Winslet has to be one of the most refined actresses working today. To cast her as a rural mother from the wrong side of the tracks is bordering on absurd. Giving her a heavy brow and a tattered nightie doesn’t do it. Who’d she beat out for the role? Cate Blanchett? Gwyneth Paltrow? 2) Josh Brolin lacks the inherent likability to pull off the role of a wrongly imprisoned convict, and he fumbles with a painfully sappy script. I’ve never understood his appeal. 3) Don’t over-think when it comes to the plot. Well, scratch ‘over.’ 4) Do not have a drink before seeing it or the dialogue will make you chuckle. Although there could be a drinking game to be played involving preemptively shouting out the reply to a schmaltzy softball set-up line. 5) You can’t focus on the story, the actors, the acting, the chemistry or the dialogue. It’s like there’s no safe place to rest your eyes. On a positive note, I got a hot bag of popcorn. The gal held it under the spinner as the fresh popcorn filled the bag. That never happens to me.

T
O BE PERFECTLY HONEST, I’M a fan of young romance: I’m a fan of romantic comedies, I’m a fan of straight-up comedies, and I’m even a fan of Neanderthal male-bonding buddy movies. This is none of those. We start with a fail-safe plot: Commitment-phobe Jason (Zac Efron) meets perfect, cool, gorgeous Ellie (Imogen Poots), and must battle his own self-sabotage and his juvenile buddies to win her heart and find love. I mean, come on. You’d have to do something really wrong to screw that up. Here, they do it in spectacular fashion. The movie doesn’t bomb, it simply dies a long, slow death. I’m not sure I’ve impressed upon you the gravity of the situation: The leads, Efron and Poots, two incredibly attractive people, look throughout the film like they showed up to shoot with a vicious hangover, and then proceeded to cut their own hair with safety scissors. Indie favorite Miles Teller is reduced to uttering some of the worst one-liners ever written, and Oscar hopeful Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) had even less to work with than his costars, if that’s possible. This movie may very well end up being a career-killer. At the very least, it is a complete waste of time.
The Whipping Man BY MARK BRETZ
THE STORY The time is April 13, 1865. Confederate soldier Caleb DeLeon has returned to his family’s home in Richmond, just four days after the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy at Appomattox, Va. Caleb is the scion of a Southern Jewish family that has abandoned their home in the wake of the South’s surrender to the North. The wounded Caleb soon is joined by Simon, one of the DeLeons’ slaves, who also were Jewish, and then by another ex-slave named John. Simon informs Caleb that his week-old leg wound has led to gangrene and that he must be treated at the local hospital, which Caleb resolutely refuses to do. After Simon performs a makeshift, emergency amputation, the three men prepare for Passover Seder, which asks the question, “Why is this night different from all other nights?” As the trio of men grapple with their new status as ‘equals,’ some family secrets bubble to the surface—revelations that add personal torment to the political chaos around them.
HIGHLIGHTS Playwright Matthew Lopez, a staff writer for Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series, The Newsroom, has seen his drama become perhaps the most-produced new play of the 21st century. The current production at New Jewish Theatre is riveting and provocative in its own right under Doug Finlayson’s studied, careful direction.
COMPANY: New Jewish Theatre VENUE: Wool Theatre, JCC, 2 Millstone Campus Drive DATES: February 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 16 TICKETS: $35-$39; 442-3283 or newjewish theatre.org RATING: A 4.5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews. com
The cast, comprised of J. Samuel Davis, Austin Pierce and Gregory Fenner, acquit themselves admirably. Fenner as John, in particular, is a revelation: When he recounts the savage treatment afflicted upon him by the title character, he stomps his foot with increasingly emphatic power to underscore the brutality, as well as the rage within him. Davis rushes a few of his more dramatic lines a bit too much, but his second-act reminiscence of President Lincoln’s assassination is a touching and tender treatment. As Caleb, Pierce has the most problematic character. Generally he’s able to convey the former slave-owner’s own troubled heart and dark background, although his angst could be more convincing. Still, Finlayson is able to elicit two fine performances and a superior one from these three gifted players in a smoothly calibrated presentation that is engrossing throughout.

GAME ON!
THE WORD ON CHRIS PRONGER
E
BY FRANK CUSUMANO
XPECTATIONS HAVE FOLLOWED him everywhere. Whether as the second pick in the NHL draft in 1993 or when he was traded for a popular All-Star like Brendan Shanahan, Chris Pronger knew he had to perform. Some cave under the pressure, but Pronger thrived. All he did was make six All-Star games, win two gold medals at the Olympics, a Stanley Cup, a Norris Trophy for being the top defenseman, and a Hart Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player. “Chris Pronger is the best outlet passer in NHL history,” Darren Pang once said. Pronger didn’t play hockey: He understood hockey. Pronger was the best player in the world for one season, and arguably the best defenseman of his generation. His career will be capped off with a Hall of Fame induction one day. His career was cut short because of concussions in 2011, a condition he still is dealing with to this day. Most of his time nowadays is spent watching his three children play sports and doing some scouting for the Philadelphia Flyers. Back in the day, if Pronger played for your team, you loved every aspect of his game. If he played on the other team, you hated his guts. Pronger may have been the league’s No. 1 villain. One time during a brief, quiet moment while
PRONGER WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD FOR ONE SEASON, AND ARGUABLY THE BEST DEFENSEMAN OF HIS GENERATION.
the national anthem was being sung in San Jose, somebody yelled at the top of their lungs, Pronger, you suck! Then everybody cheered. He relished the role, and played it well. For nine glorious years, Pronger was the man in St. Louis. Now, he’s retired and living in the town where his star started to shine. Olympic gold or Stanley Cup, what means more? Stanley Cup. One Blues teammate in history you would want protecting your family? Tony Twist. Who is the one forward you did not want coming at you? None, just the little weak guys. I had trouble with the little weak guys. Gretzky, Lemieux or Orr to start a franchise? Lemieux. Describe the Mike Keenan experience. I was in his office after every period, after every game and before every practice. If there was a picture of the whipping boy, I was it. How is your health? It comes and goes. It’s better than it was. I am still a long way off from being good. There are still a lot of things that can be symptomatic. Do you want your two sons, Jack and George, to be hockey players? It would be great if that’s something that they really want to do. There are many factors involved, and they have to put the work in. It’s a tremendous commitment, lots of hard work and practice.
Describe the pressure of playing for Team Canada in the Olympics. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure for us as Canadian hockey players to win the gold and perform well. The term, gold or bust, resonates with Canadian hockey.
FIVE THINGS I THINK: 1. Captain Phillips is a combination of Midnight Express and Argo. It makes you wonder, though, how in the world a ship could not be armed and not bring any protection? 2. There is one player from St. Louis playing for SLU and Mizzou basketball this season. Young men, wake up, stay at home, go the NCAA Tourney and make a name for yourself in your hometown.
4. Rick Hummel says he can’t ever remember going to a spring training with so much starting pitching depth. It is hard to believe that Lance Lynn or Joe Kelly—or maybe both—may not be good enough to be in the rotation. 5. One of the best organizations in St. Louis is Unlimited Play. Two women are building state-of-the-art playgrounds all over the region for kids who have disabilities. They have two more about to open in the city of St. Louis; that would put them at eight. Go to UnlimitedPlay.org for more information.

3. I don’t care if the Rams have drafted a bunch of receivers lately. They didn’t have one catch more than 40 balls this season. Why not try to make Sam Bradford great and draft a real stud, and find out if Sam can really play?

Mary Boehne, Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis Johnny Pie: Strawberry Rhubarb and Lemon Meringue Tart Until a few months ago, Four Seasons St. Louis pastry chef Mary Boehne always heard the same two pie requests from her boyfriend, John: lemon meringue and strawberry rhubarb. “His mind exploded when we thought, What if we put the two together?” Boehne says. “My grandma actually made it first, with strawberry rhubarb on the bottom and lemon meringue on the top. It was a hit.” Boehne says this dish can be tweaked to please any palate—she suggests swapping blueberry compote for the strawberry rhubarb, or key lime for the lemon meringue. Here, she garnishes the dish with meringue kisses and red coconut butter.

Bring lemon juice and sugar to a boil. Mix the eggs and yolks together. Pour 1/4 of the hot lemon juice into the egg mixture, stirring constantly. Add the rest of the hot juice to the egg mixture, then pour the mixture back into the pot, stirring constantly until thickened. Pull from heat and stir in the butter and lemon zest. Place in a different container and allow to chill completely in the refrigerator. Set aside. Strawberry Rhubarb Filling: 1 pt. fresh strawberries 1 pt. fresh or frozen rhubarb Sugar to taste 1 C water Bring berries, rhubarb, water and sugar to a simmer. Allow to cook down until thickened. Cool completely, set aside. Meringue: 4 oz. egg whites 6 oz. sugar Heat oven to 200 degrees. Whip the egg whites, add sugar slowly. Whip to full volume. Set aside half for the pie topping. For the kisses, use a round piping tip to pipe the other half onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Hold the tip 1/4 inch from the parchment paper and pull

the piping bag up, releasing piping pressure to form the traditional ‘kiss’ shape. Bake the meringues for 1 hour or until crunchy. To assemble the tart: Layer the berry filling into the bottom of the prepared crust.
Add the lemon curd on top of the berry mixture. Pipe or spoon the meringue on top of the lemon. Either use a torch or a broiler to brown the meringue. Garnish with fresh berries, meringue kisses or chocolate.

Yields 1 9-inch pie or 8 individual tarts Short Dough: 1 C butter 1/2 C powdered sugar 1/2 t vanilla 1/2 t lemon zest 8 egg yolks 2 1/2 C cake flour Cream butter, sugar, vanilla and lemon zest. Blend in yolks, then add flour. Do not over mix. Wrap dough and allow to cool for one hour. Roll out dough to 1/8-inch thick. Place into prepared pans and chill. Using a fork, stab a few holes into the dough to ensure it doesn’t bubble in the oven. Cut a piece of parchment paper 3 inches larger than the pan with the dough. Place the parchment on top of the dough and fill with baking beans. Bake dough at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, until the crust is slightly brown. Take the beans out and continue baking the crust until golden brown, another 5 to 8 minutes. Lemon Curd: 4 eggs 6 egg yolks 1/2 C lemon juice 2/3 C sugar 3/4 C butter 1 t lemon zest

Red Velvet Bread Pudding
Passion Fruit Crème Brulee
Julie Weldele, pastry chef at Scape, has an entire board on Pinterest dedicated to red velvet desserts. It was there she found a recipe for red velvet bread pudding “that used red velvet cake,” Weldele says. “I thought, Why would you use cake in bread pudding?” Thus, her recipe was born. She suggests using high-end or specialty cocoa powder, and says you also can add small chunks of cheesecake or Philadelphia-brand cheesecake filling. The vinegar, Weldele says, gives an extra hint of tang, creating the signature red velvet flavor.
La Patisserie Chouquette owner and pastry chef Simon Faure describes this crème brûlée with a smile. “It’s tart, it’s sweet, it’s creamy, and dreamy and romantic,” she says. “It literally tricks your brain. You don’t believe it’s cold outside, you think you’re someplace tropical.” Faure first encountered a tropical-fruit crème brûlée on her first day of work at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Fla. She tinkered with the recipe, adding more passion fruit and removing the other fruit. Faure serves the dish with a coconut congolais, but with gloved hands—she’s allergic to coconut. Faure warns against baking the brûlée using a water bath, which can be dangerous, and recommends buying passion fruit puree at Global Foods Market or Jay’s International Foods.
Yields 4 to 5 small ramekins, or 8 to 10 servings 1 C heavy cream 1 C buttermilk 3/4 C sugar 2 T cocoa powder 1 T red food color 1/4 t white vinegar 7 egg yolks 1/2 loaf of bread, cut into cubes (Weldele uses challah, brioche or croissants) Bring buttermilk, heavy cream, sugar and cocoa powder to a boil in a small pot. Add vinegar and red food color. Pour about a cup of the cream mixture into the egg yolks,
and whisk. Mix in the rest of the cream mixture. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for about an hour, letting the bread soak up the custard. Bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour. Cream Cheese Glaze 1/4 C softened cream cheese 2 T butter 1/2 C powdered sugar 2 to 3 T whole milk Mix together cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar with a mixer. Slowly add the milk until it reaches the consistency of corn syrup. Warm on low heat and drizzle over the bread pudding.
Yields 4 servings 1 c heavy cream or whipping cream 3 T passion fruit puree 2 1/2 to 3 T sugar 4 egg yolks 3 t raw sugar In a medium-sized bowl, gently whisk egg yolks, white sugar and puree until blended. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. In a medium-sized pan, add cream and heat over medium heat. Once the cream is just boiling, turn heat down to a low simmer, stirring frequently for
3 to 5 minutes. Temper the cooked cream into the egg-sugar-puree bowl, one ladle at a time. Pour the mixture into ramekins. Bake the ramekins for 35 to 40 minutes, or until set. Remove and allow the ramekins to cool completely. Chill the brulee in a refrigerator for at least 4 to 6 hours, or overnight. Once chilled, sprinkle about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of raw sugar on the top of each ramekin, and blow torch the top to melt and caramelize the sugar. Serve immediately, once the burned sugar has cooled.

Baida Moroccan Restaurant
A Taste of Marrakesh
BY SIDNEY LEWIS
FOR A LONG WHILE NOW, THE STRETCH OF South Grand Avenue from Arsenal to Gravois has been home to a cornucopia of some of the area’s best ethnic eateries. One of the most recent restaurants to set up shop in this vibrant area is Baida, which specializes in Moroccan cuisine, the first of its kind here. We dropped in to see just what this new kid on the block has to offer. Those who aren’t familiar with Moroccan food will find Baida’s menu readily approachable, as it features a good selection of recognizable dishes such as Broshettes (or skewered meats), and, of course, the ubiquitous couscous. As much as we love meat on a stick, though; for the sake of broadening our palates, we opted for the Briwat Trio ($7) a trey of deep-fried turnovers consisting of crispy phyllo dough stuffed with vegetables, chicken and beef. Though fried, these fritter-like savory pastries were fairly light thanks to the phyllo and proved to be a tasty, appetite-inducing starter. In addition to hearty entrees like lamb chops, Baida has a selection of tajins, a traditional dish of various braised meats accompanied by vegetables and spices, and served in a conical clay vessel to keep the steam in until the last possible moment. We decided on the beef version, or Sahara Tajine ($17), though there also are chicken, rabbit, seafood, vegetable and meatball versions to be had. The clay pot made for an interesting presentation and was filled with plenty of the promised ingredients. The chunks of beef were on the tough
side, though, and the advertised cumin, saffron and coriander were definitely in the background. The end result was more reminiscent of a good ol’ beef stew. Tasty enough, but not particularly complex, flavor-wise. The Moroccan Mixt Grill ($26), offers a lamb chop, a 4-oz cumin-rubbed ribeye, harissa-spiced chicken breast and a choice of either couscous or lentils (we chose the later). The chicken and lamb were well-cooked—we got our lamb medium rare and were pleased with the rosy red color and the texture. Again, as with the tajine, there was a definite dearth of spices in this dish. While this may make things more accessible to the general dining populace, we’d like to have the option of having more spice. The Baida space is bright and inviting. It’s split between a bar area and the main dining room, and there’s plenty of elbow room in each. We recommend the slightly elevated seating by the front window, if available. It’s a bit removed from the rest of the room and offers some quality peoplewatching perches. Baida has the potential to be a real standout among the rich culinary offerings on South Grand. We’re looking forward to seeing how this new kid evolves.

Recently, the folks at Local Harvest announced that their business was in trouble, due in large part to its failed Kirkwood store, which closed last fall. They needed to raise $120,000 by Feb. 7 to keep the doors at the two Local Harvest cafes and Local Harvest Grocery open. To reach this goal, Local Harvest offered gift certificates and punch cards for sale, and started an Idiegogo campaign to take donations. We’re pleased to report that this ambitious campaign succeeded in spades: The full amount was raised with almost a week to spare, and owners PATRICK HORINE and MADDIE EARNEST are gearing up to get the business back on track. Congrats!

I’ve had people ask me which one is worse, and there’s really no answer because they’re both terrible in their own ways. With both, you’re missing experiences that would be important and meaningful to your life. In both situations, I felt that my entire life had been turned upside down. Because my losses were both part of my immediate family—people I would have built my life with—they were equally huge. In both cases, I felt a lot of the same emotions: hopelessness, depression, anxiety, no motivation to keep moving forward. The physical heartache is almost unbearable. My husband had been a huge rock for me when my son died, so when I lost him it was more isolating and lonely. When I lost my husband, it felt like I had to go through it on my own. Even though there were people around me who wanted

Another special guest will grace the stage this time around, as well as additional surprises, organizers say. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 7 p.m. and dinner at 8:15 p.m., followed by a surprise performance, with music and dancing capping off the night. “In 10 years, this event has grown to be one of the most unique celebrations in town,” Ritter notes. “Each year, the theme and special performances continue to surprise guests, which is why I think people keep coming back.” Rusnack adds that like past events, this year’s theme will not disappoint. “The Mardi Gras Masquerade has been a wonderful opportunity for Peggy and me to support a cause we are so passionate about—helping provide superior health care to those in need in our community.”

to help, I didn’t have my partner to lean on. But in either case, I lost a piece of my heart, for sure. You believe that embracing grief is not easy, but it is essential to moving forward. Explain how you can do that and why it’s important. It’s basically a form of acceptance: What has happened to you is a piece of your story, and that should be honored. It’s easy to feel a lot of shame and guilt in grief because you think, I should be dealing with this differently, and I should be doing this better. When you go through something so drastic and life-changing, you can look back and say, I’ve come a long way, and this has opened my eyes in new ways. Now I talk about my story in a very honorable way with a feeling of gratitude because so many amazing things that have come into my life from being open about what’s happened to me. I’ve met the most amazing people. I’ve started something I feel proud of. I’m leaving a legacy for my daughter. It’s amazing to feel that you have this new meaning. Your story is part of you—it’s sacred and special, and you don’t have to hide it away.
