A few weeks ago, we received word that an LN reader made a very generous donation to a local cause we’d featured in the Aug. 30 edition of the magazine. The LN staff exchanged high-fives around the office and shed happy tears. Hours later, as I washed the dishes at home, I caught myself still smiling. (To the donor: Thank you.)
Every day at LN, we have the privilege of platforming and celebrating some of the many St. Louisans who invest their time, energy and resources into making this city a better place for all who call it home. Even as a metro-area native, my years on staff have opened my eyes to just how compassionate St. Louis can be.
Thanksgiving is still some weeks away, but as my cup runneth over with gratitude, I can’t help but say: To those who share their stories with us and to those who read them – thank you! What a joy it is to be your neighbor.
Happy reading,
Ashley Klein, Managing Editor

GATEWAY TO THE OutdoorS
By Megan Rubenstein
Are you a hiker or biker, a swimmer or a runner? Are you more of the type to stay back and relax, but looking to get inspired and find your adventurous side? If so, look no further than the Gateway Outdoor Expo and Summit.
The event calls itself “the premier consumer show and cultural gathering for the regional outdoor community.” Attendees can learn about the latest outdoor products and trends and meet other like-minded individuals. This year, the event is taking place Nov. 22 to 24 at the St. Charles Convention Center with more than 8,000 attendees expected.
For the seventh nonconsecutive year, the event will be hosted by River City Foundation, a local nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities for St. Louisans to learn about outdoor recreation and experience the mental, physical and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors.
“There is a misconception that we’re a flyover region when it comes to outdoor recreation, but that’s just not true,” says event producer Brad Kovach. “We have one of the best river systems in the country and several major bike routes come through St. Louis.”
The summit, which will promote equitable access to outdoor recreation in Missouri and Southern Illinois, will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. The expo, which provides a platform for product vendors and regional organizational booths, will
take place on Nov. 23 and 24. Both events are free and open to all, but the summit is ticketed as it is a conference-style event with presentations and panels geared toward local leaders in outdoor recreation, including parks and recreation employees, government officials and those who work in economic development.
“We try to fill the room with people who are in a position to take these action items and put them into place,” Kovach says. “We want them to understand that outdoor recreation is a beneficial industry that is good for health, but also for the economy, community pride and building a more diverse outdoor culture.”
This year, highlights of the expo will include a mountain bike trial zone with small, simulated obstacles; a fly casting area for those interested in learning the basics of fly fishing; and an endless spa, which functions as a treadmill for swimming. Attendees are encouraged to bring a swimsuit if they would like to try it out themselves. There will also be family friendly attractions, such as a rock climbing wall and photos with Santa in a canoe.
“Even if you are already a veteran outdoors person here in the area, there’s always new things,” Kovach says. “New parks, new races, new events – and I hope those folks will still be inspired by a new opportunity to keep out there and keep active.”

Healthy-Kid Handbook
By Dr. Ryia Ross-Peterson
Ihave had the honor and privilege to be a pediatrician in the Clayton and Ladue communities for 30 years, and time has flown by!
Why do I love being a pediatrician? After family and close friends, I likely have the longest-term relationship in a child’s life. Sometimes, as I’m wishing a child good luck in college, I can even conjure up where their bassinet was in the hospital when I met them the day they were born. What could be better than that?
There are two basic questions everyone wants answered, but nobody actually asks, when visiting their pediatrician: “Is my child OK?” and “Am I a good parent?” My job is to offer positive guidance to help my patients and their parents feel comfortable in their health and abilities.
Here are some of the most important things I’ve learned in my 30 years in pediatrics on how children and families become healthy and happy:
BIRTH TO AGE 4
This age group needs lots of love and attention. They need hugs and physical closeness and connection. They need the adults in their lives to put down their cell phones and be present with them. There is a great TED talk by 7-year-old Molly Wright called, “How Every Child Can Thrive by Five,” where she clearly and powerfully explains this topic.
There are many milestones during these early years. When babies become toddlers, around age 1, they suddenly get into what I like to call the, “Don’t mess with me!” stage, where there are frequent frustrations and tantrums. It’s important to let them know that all their feelings are acceptable and that frustration is part of life. Don’t try to “fix it” for them –just let them have their feelings. The script I give parents: “Oh, you’re mad. Everyone gets mad sometimes. It’s OK to be mad, but it’s not time to have a cookie now.”
Luckily, when they have better language, they get more cooperative!
AGE 5 TO PRE-TEEN
It may sound boring, but the key to good health here is real food (minimize processed and fast foods), good sleep (9.5 to 11 hours a night), exercise (at least an hour a day) and lots of playtime – especially outdoors.
Set up play dates, play team sports or find other activities such as dance, gymnastics and martial arts.
Have a play date with your child; adults need play too. Make your child feel part of a community: school, religious, sports, friends, etc. We all need to feel capable and helpful, so make opportunities for your children to help the family and others. Institute family meals (without electronics is even better) as often as possible, and try to stick to this in the teen years.
ADOLESCENTS
These years come with a lot of parental angst. The COVID-19 pandemic and cell phones made it even more challenging for both parents and teens. Anxiety and depression issues loom large. Teens’ bodies and hormones are changing, and they are becoming their own person, often by experimenting and pushing boundaries. Although it may appear that they don’t need or want their parents around, they actually need you more than ever – just in a different way. They need you to listen, listen and then listen more. You might have to hang out in the kitchen late at night or gently probe them while driving in the car, but try to keep the lines of communication open. Teens need connection to other teens to thrive, and not just online. Try to make opportunities for them to connect outside of school. They may push back, but once they find an interest and a group, they will appreciate the nudge.
Parenting at all ages and stages comes with pressure on parents. You will make lots of mistakes; acknowledge them and apologize. Luckily, kids are resilient. Remember to get support for yourself, too, and ask your pediatrician for help, when needed. It takes a village to raise young people, and I’m glad to be part of that village.

MILLION-DOLLAR
Climate Mission
Saint Louis University is joining the front lines of climate resilience with nearly $1 million in new funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish a cutting-edge Climate Resilience Center. Announced on Aug. 15, the $964,848 grant makes SLU one of only 10 projects selected for this DOE-funded initiative and reinforces the university’s role in the battle against climate change.
This three-year project will be headed by principal investigator Orhun Aydin, assistant professor in earth and atmospheric science at SLU’s School for Science and Engineering. The Climate Resilience Center will bring together researchers from across the university working on issues around urban climate – specifically heat islands – and how they impact human health.
What’s a heat island?
Heat islands can form in urban areas with large concentrations of buildings, roads and pavement, especially when there’s a high urban density (higher levels of population in smaller amounts of space). In heat islands, the temperature rises unnaturally higher than the surrounding, less dense parts of the metro area. Heat is also one of the driving factors in premature deaths in Missouri, according to SLU. “Heat islands aren’t just about the temperature,” Aydin said in a release. “In St. Louis, with our humidity, 90 degrees can be suffocating. The stress on those experiencing the heat is different.”
What will the Climate Resistance Center do?
The Climate Resistance Center will utilize high-resolution modeling of heat islands in St. Louis city and county by creating a network of highprecision weather sensors using Aydin’s AI-CHESS (Artificial Intelligence for Coupled Human-Environment System Analysis for Sustainability) Lab at SLU. These sensors will give the research team real-time weather data;
then, they’ll follow up with an AI model for high heat exposure based on the DOE’s climate models. “We will be able to investigate the impact of green spaces and sustainable development,” Aydin said. “Increasing green spaces will reduce the impact of heat islands and improve shade equity to lower-income neighborhoods.”
What’s the Climate Resistance Center’s end goal?
The goal of the Climate Resistance Center is to find ways to build heat resistance into existing buildings and future developments in the area to protect St. Louisans experiencing extreme heat.
It’s a complex mission that requires a carefully assembled team: Pulling from SLU’s academic programs, each researcher brings a different lens to the project. Sarah Coffin, director of SLU’s urban planning and development program, brings expertise in urban design to aid in future development plans. Liz Hasenmueller and Jason Knouft, both members of SLU’s WATER Institute, will dive into creating more green spaces built to withstand flooding and drought conditions. Anthropologist Emily Hite will track people’s perceptions and experiences with heat, and Enbal Shacham brings a public health and equity lens.
“We have a wide variety of expertise among the investigators,” Aydin said. “They each make up an important aspect of the project. Our government and community partners will also be an integral part of the final action and implementation of any research findings.”
Local nonprofit and community partner EnergyCare will also conduct home audits and provide assistance in the form of better insulation or air-conditioning units. Finally, using collected data, the Climate Resistance Center will craft neighborhood dashboards to share with the city and county.

Saying Thanks
This month, Ready Readers recommends two books to encourage children to explore, learn and celebrate this colorful season.
The first book, “Autumn Leaves” by author and illustrator Ken Robbins, is an inviting nonfiction book featuring life-sized photos of leaves from 25 different types of trees. The book engages young minds in thinking scientifically about fall foliage as Robbins invites inquisitive readers to compare colors, shapes and sizes of leaves and to note the names of leaf parts, including the stem and veins. After reading the book aloud and collecting leaves in your area, invite your child to create artwork using crayons (with the paper removed), white paper and the leaves you’ve assembled. Turn the leaves face down on a table, leaving the veins exposed. Place a clean sheet of paper atop the leaf, then – holding the crayon parallel to the paper – rub the crayon over the entire leaf, revealing the veins and edge designs of each. Extending story time into an art activity strengthens the understanding of what was learned

and gives children a lasting memory of the experience. This month’s second book suggestion is “If You’re Thankful and You Know It” by author Chrissy Bozik and illustrator Patricia Storms. This movement and imagination tale works well as a sing-along, too, as it’s set to the familiar preschool tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Readers follow a group of children through multiple fall scenarios, including raking up piles of leaves and jumping in; dressing in layers as chilly weather sets in; picking apples and choosing a pumpkin to make a pie; playing outside amid the falling leaves; and welcoming family, neighbors and friends to gather together to share a feast. Read this story aloud, then enjoy a discussion about all the traditions your family holds dear this time of year.
Ready Readers, an early literacy nonprofit, provides books, story times and other literacy experiences to children living in economically suppressed neighborhoods across the St. Louis metro area. Visit readyreaders.org to learn more.
Not-So-Secret GARDEN

Asimple hill alongside I-44 in south central St. Louis looks a little different thanks to a joint project between the nonprofit Green House Venture and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The new Embankment Greenway demonstration campus –known as “the Classroom Along the Highway” – provides hands-on learning experiences for students in grades 4 to 6 in STEM education programs from four charter, magnet and parochial elementary schools in the City of St. Louis, all with a special emphasis on serving diverse student populations.
“It enables teachers at nearby elementary schools to offer their students inclusive field trips, outdoor planting and cultivation experiences and opportunities to harvest foods and learn about dietetics and nutrition,” Green House Venture president Tom Purcell says.
The Embankment Greenway is a 3.7-acre area that spans two city blocks along DeTonty Street between Thurman and 39th streets. It serves as an educational food garden and bee pollinator laboratory. Plus, it enables young students to work with scientists to plant, study and harvest various food crops while also exploring ways to use interstate highway margins to revitalize declining pollinator populations.
Purcell says the Embankment Greenway is designed to provide a unique and innovative approach to education. Students from four neighboring schools can participate in the once-weekly classroom outreach program. At the same time, dozens of adult volunteers and gardening enthusiasts from local organizations help prepare and maintain the gardens and habitats year-round.
“The goal of the program is to educate, excite and equip an inclusive population of elementary students to pursue a sustainable world through a hands-on program in bioscience and urban agriculture,” Purcell says. “We want to make kids aware of what it is like to work in the science field and
encourage them to pursue science as a career.”
This hands-on experience is built on a collaboration between the four participating elementary schools as well as Saint Louis University, Harris-Stowe State University, University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis Community College. The Embankment Greenway is only part one of two planned phases for the GHV campus. Purcell says Phase 2 includes a twostory, $4.7-million Education Center.
“It will feature approximately 9,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor learning spaces, including a rooftop garden,” he says. “The Education Center will serve as a hub for students from across the region to engage in a wide variety of hands-on teaching experiences in sustainable urban food production and receive training in dietetics and nutrition.”
Visitors to the Education Center will be able to observe and participate in aquaponic growing, vertical wall growing, rooftop vegetable gardening and the production of perch, tilapia, barramundi, freshwater shrimp and other edible aquatic animals. The facility will also include advanced technology enabling live streaming and online video access for schools locally and nationally. As of October 2024, GHV has raised $1.8 million in funding.
Purcell says that through projects like the Embankment Greenway and the Education Center, the GHV introduces children to rich, hands-on learning experiences that improve bioscience education and students’ understanding of proper nutrition. Likewise, this exposure can have a reciprocal effect on St. Louis’ future success.
“As we lead more students to careers in bioscience, we are helping build a homegrown pipeline of talent to meet the St. Louis region’s workforce needs of the future.”

Regency Moderne
By Alecia Humphreys > Photo by Karen Palmer
Once a bland and basic loft, this living area is now a kaleidoscope of color thanks to Kathleen Matthews, interior designer at Marcia Moore Design.
“The space is exciting, glamorous, inviting and fun!” Matthews says. “There are so many new elements, which create this very intimate, colorful loft conveying the homeowner’s personality and love of Hollywood Regency design.”
One such element includes a marvelously moody floor-to-ceiling wallcovering.
“I love the tropical wallcovering as you enter the loft,” Matthews says. “It sets the vibe right away while complimenting the beautiful marble countertop.”
Matthews also added an oversized slab of exotic marble for the island, faux painted panels in the living room and, of course, a bright and beautiful color palette throughout, featuring pops of pink, green and blue.
“The colors are amazing,” Matthews says. “The finishes are dramatic and unique. ... Not one selection was standard or ho-hum – but yet, as a whole look, everything pulls together.”
The cabinets were painted pink, which Matthews carried into the
adjoining family room with coordinating furnishings. She added emerald green stools to the island to accentuate the herringbone backsplash and, again, tie into the painted panels in the living room.
“This was a fun and rewarding project,” Matthews says. “Getting to think out of the traditional color box was a big treat.”

Sabroso Concina Mexicana
Story and photos by Mable Suen
Sabroso Cocina Mexicana recently opened a second location in Maplewood, expanding to include the full bar chef-owner Miguel Pintor always dreamt of for the concept. When Pintor opened the original St. Ann location in 2021, a major caveat caused an unexpected setback: Due to the building’s proximity to an area church, the business could not serve alcohol. Despite this, his scratch-made Mexican fare still succeeded in the space to critical acclaim. This time around, the drinks are flowing freely, and there’s plenty of patio space – another first for Sabroso – to enjoy them on.
The Maplewood location, which opened in July, features all of the flagship’s signature dishes along with some exciting new menu items like chilaquiles. There, Pintor mixes drinks chock full of fresh fruit juices behind the bar, just as he always envisioned.
Renovations over the past year included newly installed components including booths, the kitchen floor and a stone bar top. Staff member Julieta Lopez painted a colorful mural of the Arch to lend vibrancy to the dining area.
Sabroso is Spanish for “tasty,” and Pintor cooks from scratch as much as possible to live up to the brand name. In the kitchen, he grinds masa for dishes like sopes and tamales, which come smothered with queso dip and topped with your choice of chicken tinga, birria or ground beef. Bread is also baked in-house for items like the milanesa torta with beef milanesa, black beans, jalapeños, tomatoes, onion, queso panela, morita aioli and avocado.
Additional updates to the menu include newer items such as alambre, a crispy-bottomed appetizer of cheese melted over chorizo, ham, pastor and bell peppers in a skillet, served with warm tortillas. Vaquero Jalisco is another popular new dish, which includes a bed of rice topped with grilled peppers, onions, chicken, steak and shrimp covered in queso.
Pintor’s personal favorite dish has always been the cochinita pibil, a tender pork dish with origins in the Yucatan Peninsula. The pork is marinated then slow roasted in the oven for four to five hours for a tender product that pairs well with rice, beans, tortillas and pickled habanero onions.
The chilaquiles – a traditional Mexican breakfast dish – feature a combination of house salsas atop fried tortillas with your choice of
protein topped with a fried egg. The dish hints at upcoming weekend brunch offerings, which will also include items like pancakes with a Mexican twist, biscuits and gravy with chorizo, mimosas and molletes –a traditional open-faced sandwich.
Behind the bar, general manager Manuel Munguía created a menu of traditional margaritas and more made with fresh juices to pair with the fare. “People from Maplewood who have been coming in are so nice,” Pintor says. “Our second location was a lot easier than the first. We’re hoping to expand even further.”
Sabroso Cocina Mexicana’s Maplewood location is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“eVerybody for Kindness” walk
The inaugural “eVerybody for Kindness” walk at Queeny Park brought perfect weather and a powerful message to St. Louis in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month. Hosted by tween boutique Ellie Viv and owner Ashley Hornsby, the event partnered with organizations like the Megan Meier Foundation and KidSmart to create a meaningful and engaging experience. Participants enjoyed a relaxed, informative walk, along with entertainment including a DJ, bubble machine, art projects, silent auction packages, a food truck and more.
The Megan Meier Foundation leads efforts to inspire and support actions that prevent bullying, cyberbullying and suicide. KidSmart is an organization that provides school supplies for children in need.
Visit laduenews.com to see more photos from this event >
The ‘eVerybody for Kindness’ walk was a phenomenal success for our first year. With over 200 walkers and $20,000 raised for our two charities, I was completely blown away by the support and generosity of all who participated and donated.
I’m very proud of my team, and we’re looking forward to planning our second annual walk for next year!
