It’s finally springtime! Just like getting the itch to start fresh with spring cleaning, the return of some much-needed sunshine always makes me want to try something new.

Want to shop, dine or visit somewhere out of your ordinary routine? Check out the winners of the 2025 Ladue News Platinum List awards, as chosen my our readers’ votes, on p. 23. With so many wonderful local businesses run by passionate people around the metro, the competition was stiff – and the winners are certainly worth a gander.

Looking for a wardrobe refresh? Columnist Brittany Nay takes us inside Blush Boutique in St. Louis on p. 52, where casual, coastal-inspired pieces are the name of the game. On p. 64, contributing writer Bethany Christo helps you plan your perfect outfit for all the music festivals coming up this spring and summer.

And if it’s a new read you need, columnist and resident Bookstagrammer Charlotte Renner rounds up books selected by female-focused organizations around the metro in honor of Women’s History Month on p. 60.

Happy reading,

Meet Moii Coffee

FiraolAhmedandAndyIrakozemetasundergraduatesatSaint LouisUniversity. Now, they’retakingthecoffeeworldbystorm. Since2023,AhmedhasbeenworkingonMoiiCoffee, a startup thatconnectscoffeeroasterswithcoffeeproducersandfarmers. “There are a lotofintermediariesbetweenthose two,” Ahmed says. “So we’rekindof[bridging]that gap.”

Ahmedoriginallystartedsharinghis love for coffeeas a passion project.“In2022, I startedworkingoutof my dormroomas a roasting company,”Ahmed says. “I was roastingcoffeebeans from Ethiopiaand sellingthemonline.”

Afterspeakingwithroastersandseeingthechallengestheyfaced insourcingtheirbeans,Ahmeddecidedtochangeandexpandthe business.MoiiCoffeeis now strictly a softwareconnectingproducers toindependentroasters.Irakoze, a softwareengineer,officiallyjoined AhmedinthepursuitlastOctober.“[Ahmed] was tellingme … how difficultitis for roasterstoconnecttoproducersdirectly,”Irakoze says. “Hewantedtobuild a platform,and I was like,‘Youknowwhat?Let’s doit.’”

“We liketothinkofitasanInstacart for thecoffeeindustry,”Ahmed says. “There are peopleselling, there are peoplebuying, but we makethe logisticsandthedeliveryhappen.”

Roasters from all over theU.S. are currentlyusingtheplatform: “We have buyersinquite a few differentstatesontheWestCoastandEast Coast,”Ahmed says. “We have someinAlabama,Arkansas, andthen a lot

intheMidwestaswell. We were abletoshipcoffeeto42statesinthe first year.”

EvenwithMoii’scurrentmomentum, thecoffeemarketitselfpresents challenges.“Thecoffeeindustryisactuallysupersaturated,”Ahmed says. “So you really have tostandout, right?Because you could get Ethiopian coffee from 20differentroastersinonesmallcity.”

Theduobelievesthatauthenticityhasbeenthe key totheirsuccess. Ahmed says: “I was prettyopen. I was like,‘Hey,I’m a collegestudent, thiswhatI’mdoing, andI’mfiguringitout.’Andpeoplelikethat, because thereisn’t a lotofauthenticityoutthere, inentrepreneurship, especially. Everyonewantstotell youhow bigthey are and how successfulthey are, butwhenyou’reauthenticandyou’rejusttellingpeople how itis, people relatetothat, andpeoplefeelinspired.”

“Iwishpeopleknew how hard we worktoproducethesecoffees,” Ahmedsharesonbehalfofthecoffeefarmer.“Theamountofcarethat goesintoit,theamountofintentionalitythatgoesintoproducingeach bean,is a lotmorethanpeoplethinkwhenthey’rejustsittingthere drinkingit.”
