Platinum list By Amanda Dahl
A
s consumers, we make tough choices every day – from picking a restaurant that offers the best type of food for our children to choosing a real estate agency that understands what homes suit our lifestyles. Advertisements may lead us in one direction while reviews dictate we go in another, but only one true measure proves we’ve picked the right product or place to suit our individual needs: trying it out for ourselves. Ladue News makes that decision-making process a snap with its annual Platinum List – and it’s all thanks to you, dear readers, who have explored, sampled and determined which area businesses are the best. “As this year’s Platinum List sponsor, it is a good opportunity to promote our company [and] St. Louis businesses,” Kathy Beilein, president of Laura McCarthy Real Estate, says. “Companies who win are elevated in the eyes of the public. It gives you cred in your industry. Local businesses are part of the fabric of a community. It’s in all our best interests for local businesses to thrive … to draw attention to the fact that [these companies] are made up of hardworking, successful people.” Her company is thrilled to be included on the list. “I see firsthand how hard my agents work. We are devoted to customer service as a company and down to every agent. It’s nice to be recognized,” she shares. Behind every business is a team of hardworking St. Louisans, striving to

impact the area in positive ways. “The Platinum List celebrates the relationship between customer and business owner, and the sense of community created when the two come together,” Andrea Griffith, general manager of Ladue News, says. “We are fortunate to have wonderful local businesses in abundance, providing essential products and services while building positive relationships and delivering excellent customer service.” For the second year in a row, Ladue News brought the Platinum List to life through an exclusive March 2 event held at Palladium Saint Louis. “The party connects our readers with the businesses and people who make a difference in their lives,” Griffith comments. “A wonderful extension of the list, it brings patrons and providers together to celebrate this special relationship.” Polls opened on Jan. 4 to the public, giving the community an opportunity to recognize the plethora of businesses that make that difference in their daily lives. “Celebrating local businesses and the hardworking, talented individuals who bring them to life is at the core of what we do at Ladue News,” Griffith explains. “We are a community magazine looking to share good news and connect readers with the best our area has to offer. Our Platinum List honorees are known for providing outstanding products and exemplary customer service. We want to shine a bright light on their commitment and dedication.”

I was drawn to COCA because of the arts education, but I had no idea what COCA did and what they provide for kids in terms of outreach. The preprofessional program, which is made up of about 65 percent of kids who require scholarship assistance, changes generations. Since the inception of the preprofessional program, 100 percent of those kids go on to either secondary education or to further their career in the arts. uests to Marriott St. Louis Grand recently visited the Land of Oz as soon as they entered the downtown hotel. After being greeted by several Dorothys, they enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before having their photos taken in front of Auntie Em’s house, atop the Wicked Witch of the East and with the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. Guests also delighted in the antics of the flying monkeys. The Scarecrow then led everyone in following the Yellow Brick Road upstairs into the ballroom, which had been transformed into the Emerald City. Ace KSDK sportscaster and Ladue News columnist Frank Cusumano emceed the program before guests danced into the night. In the last 12 years, the Mercy Masquerade has raised more than $6 million for the Mercy Health Foundation, providing for the needs of uninsured or underinsured children and adults in St. Louis.

hile the Arts and Education Council’s 26th annual St. Louis Arts Awards honored a multitude of individuals and organizations that have made a huge impact on the arts here, the night also showcased what’s to come, including pianist prodigy Royce Martin, 16 and a student at Grand Center Arts Academy, and Riverview Gardens band director Harvey Lockhart and his North County Big Band. Honorees included Steven Woolf, Mike Isaacson, Harvey Lockhart, Jim and Cathy Berges, Pianos for People, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and U.S. Bank. Broadway stars Ken Page and Beth Malone hosted the event and also entertained the packed ballroom at the The Chase Park Plaza. Proceeds from the event benefit the council’s annual campaign, which provides financial support, professional development, incubator space and collaborative opportunities for nearly 70 arts and arts education organizations throughout the 16-county, bistate region.

n April, supporters of Sunnyhill Inc. will come together at The Legends Country Club in Eureka for the Jim Hart Celebrity Golf Classic. The tournament supports the nonprofit’s mission of creating opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Through fundraisers like the tournament, Sunnyhill raises awareness and funds to expand residential services, recreational and educational opportunities, and
behavior therapy within the city of St. Louis and surrounding counties. In its 10th year, the tournament features interaction with celebrity golfers such as Jim Hart, Jerry Holloway and other former St. Louis Football Cardinals legends. On April 23, the event kicks off with a celebrity dinner party featuring a live performance from legendary soul singer Theo Peoples of The Four Tops and Temptations. According to Luke Mraz, Sunnyhill director of
development, the dinner party is a great way to thank the event’s major sponsors and donors. Following breakfast on April 24, the golf course opens to players from around the St. Louis area, who will be joined by football legends, NHL and MLB players who will be paired up with each foursome. “Our main goal for the two-day event is to raise funds toward our mission and spread awareness,” Mraz says.

After personal and health-related setbacks, Laurie Hiegel founded Deck the Door Decor and turned tricked-out kick plates into a successful business that could support her family.
I
t all started as a fluke. That’s what Tucker Hiegel says about Deck the Door Decor, the business he operates with his mother, Laurie Hiegel. The company provides customdesigned, monogrammed and stylish kick plates – the protective metal pieces mounted at the bottom of a wood or metal door. As Tucker tells it, his mother was always “wildly creative,” but while recovering from a stroke in 2012, she had an idea. “During her recovery, she was looking for ways to stay busy and was naturally inclined to do something creative,” he says. “She was sitting on the front porch having a glass of wine when this idea of painting her door’s kick plate hit her. She handpainted the kick plate on the front door with a unique crosshatch design using some leftover paint we had lying around.” Soon, Laurie had created designs for her garage and back-door kick plates, too, and before long, visitors noticed. Laurie recalls how a friend motivated her to turn her new hobby into a business. “A dear friend from Arkansas who had several successful businesses over the past 20 years was very impressed by my idea,” she says. “She had pretty much seen everything in the marketplace, but nothing like this. She loved the idea that they could be customized to any style, color or material and personalized to be one of a kind. She has been a great friend, mentor and a source of unending support.” Laurie had been a survivor even before her stroke. Having divorced in 2007 with three sons to put through high school and college and no job or benefits, Laurie found work as a chef for three years and then as a companion for the acutely ill. She struggled to keep her home and succeeded, but the hemorrhagic bleed on both sides of her brain caused her to give up full-time work outside the home. “To meet me, you would never know I had a stroke,” she says. “And the aftereffects are not visible. But things are different. I’m different, and I’m aware of the deficits that frustrate me so often. But I’m also very grateful – it could have been a lot worse.” Following her entrepreneurial friend’s advice, Laurie decided to take the kick-plate concept to the next level, asking Tucker to work alongside her, and Deck the Door Decor was established in 2013. “Through much trial and error, and going to some obscure and unusual places in trying to figure out how and where to get a durable, high-end product made on a large scale, we found our way to some of Missouri’s finest manufacturers,” Tucker says. He is proud of the St. Louismanufactured product and has taken the lead in the business with Laurie’s blessing. Most of the kick plates are made of metals sourced in the U.S., although other metals, such as textured copper, are available. Plates that are painted also are coated with an ultraviolet-ray protectant to decrease fading and increase durability. Both permanent and seasonal temporary or magnetic plates are available, and Tucker notes that people use them for interior doors as well as exterior doors. Kick plates with designs and the words “laundry” or “bath” add flair to interior décor. Laurie still designs most of the kick plates, a part of the business that Tucker is also increasingly involved in. “Mom sees things differently and has an uncanny way of seeing or feeling the texture of some random thing and suggesting that we make a plate like that,” he says. “A lot of ideas come from textile, and whatever is trending in that [area]. Once we come up with a new design, I carry it out to completion.” Among the company’s most popular designs are the monogrammed acanthus, a single initial surrounded by decorative leaves and vines; the chevron, a bold geometric design available in a variety of colors; and personalized home address kick plates, which feature a choice of fonts and colors. Customers can order online at deckthedoordecor.com or through The Initial Design, a monogram boutique in Webster Groves. Deck the Door Decor donates $5 for every sale made to Habitat for Humanity. Laurie’s creativity continues to be the source of new concepts. “We’re always contemplating new and unique accessories to tie in with our plates,” Tucker says. “Mom is adamant about creating some embossed designs and organic cutout designs inspired by natural textures and nature motifs, such as tree bark and leaves. Coming soon!” Deck the Door Decor, 844-542-5758, deckthedoordecor.com

Make a Small Kitchen
Functional and Beautiful By Jake Spurgeon | Photos supplied by Mosby Building Arts
K
itchens are the workhorse of the home. We craft and consume meals in them, gather and entertain in them, and use them as a command center. But what if your space is the size of a small bedroom? That’s when you need to get creative with functionality, storage and design. Luckily, designers are problem-solvers – and kitchens that seem too small are my personal forte. Here are five useful layout and design tips that can make even the smallest kitchen both functional and flawless. 1. Carefully consider work surfaces. When choosing the new layout for your space, ensure that work surfaces can serve several functions. An island cabinet with an overhanging countertop is a multifunctional way to add an eating, cooking and prep area to a small space. Choosing small, backless island stools like the ones in the photo creates a more open feel. Also, consider looking for pieces that blend in with the island color so the room feels more unified. 2. Open your space’s walls. Removing walls is one of the best ways to help create an open concept without
30 March 3, 2017 | LadueNews.com
adding square footage. It allows for easier entertaining and promotes social interaction between rooms. Just remember to identify the load-bearing walls before introducing them to a hammer. 3. Consider a built-in table. If a dining-height table is desired, try building the table into the island. Having the tabletop attached to the island allows for both items to be present in a small space, while providing another workspace. Bench seating can pack more people into the space and – in a pinch – becomes another work surface. 4. Rethink the pantry. Wide and shallow pantry areas can be challenging to organize. Adding rollout trays or designing counter space into the area can provide much-needed work surfaces for those frequently used appliances. No need to haul them back into a closet or cabinet when you’re done with them – just close the door, and everything is hidden. This is also an opportunity to repurpose a hutch or other furniture piece, which adds another dimension to a small kitchen. 5. Consider commercial shelving. If you need more counter space and storage, but the budget isn’t
quite there yet, consider commercial shelving. It’s easily available at home improvement and organizer stores, and easily customizable to your space needs. This multipurpose shelving adds a touch of industrial style and maximum storage, and provides a place for the almighty cup of joe. The rustic wood or butcher-block top also gives you another serving and work area. A small kitchen doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice having a stylish, beautiful and optimally configured kitchen. It means only that you have to be a little more creative to achieve that fantastic functional space.

Home Beautiful
The question isn’t why your home should appear beautiful inside and out. For Mosby Building Arts, the question is “Why not?” The designing team taps into a home’s true beauty, finding innovative ways to reflect you and your family through every space. “We also perform bathroom remodels, room additions, and have an exteriors division,” designer Jake Spurgeon shares. “Why shouldn’t the curb appeal look as great as the inside? We really do everything in and around the house.” To learn more, visit 645 Leffingwell Ave. in Kirkwood, call 314-909-1800 or browse online at mosbybuildingarts.com. HOME BEAUTIFUL: Feature Story

BEAUTIFYING
homes S
o much potential lies in a house. It can become a refuge for families, a retreat for out of town visitors and even a venue for guests to be entertained. Mosby Building Arts taps into all of a property’s potential to create a place that reflects its owners from the inside out. “A lot of clients choose Mosby because we have an in-depth process of design build,” designer Jake Spurgeon explains. “We want to get a good feel of how clients want that space to perform and function. We want to know if they have kids, how many and what ages … how each family member would use that space. We dissect our clients a little more than most.” This in-depth look into the way clients lead their lives provides for remarkable development of every space to distinctively suit each family. “I always stress your home is your personal sanctuary. You either spend all day or start and end your day in your

home, and it should be a direct reflection of yourself, your personality, your style – how you like to be represented,” Spurgeon comments. “Around this time of year, a lot of clients [are] ready to do something with their lower level. I think people are ready to reclaim that space after getting stir-crazy in the winter. If you entertain, you also want your guests to feel comfortable.” He describes the designers’ approach at Mosby as a collaborative process with clients from beginning to end. “Typically, clients are involved the entire way through – and that’s the way we want it to be,” Spurgeon shares. “We are able to take care of everything, but at the end of the day, it’s your home, and it’s very personal. We want to incorporate clients’ wants and needs and wishes and dreams as much as possible.” The kitchen project pictured here details one such recent collaboration. “These clients were unique

since they travel out of the country quite a bit,” Spurgeon says. “A lot of design [talk] was done via phone and email. Our software allows us to create 3-D renderings and email files to clients, so we can walk them through the space. It’s fantastic for clients who can’t always meet face-to-face. These clients requested the kitchen be completed before they returned, and it was wonderful to achieve that. It wouldn’t have been possible without that type of technology.” Mosby Building Arts’ work in the kitchen is only one small aspect of its transformative abilities, as is evidenced by its exteriors division in addition to its interior design services. “We love the projects both small and big,” Spurgeon says. “Why not turn your home into what you’ve always wanted it to be?” Mosby Building Arts, 645 Leffingwell Ave., Kirkwood, 314-909-1800, mosbybuildingarts.com

With 25 years of experience under his belt, Dr. Brock Ridenour is proud to help patients look and feel their best. Given his status as one of the top providers of Botox and filling agents in the nation, as well as his comprehensive facial cosmetic surgery techniques for skin resurfacing, skin tightening and body contouring, there’s no question why Ridenour and his staff have been voted a favorite in the Ladue News Platinum List again and again. In addition to the attention and care he shows each patient, Ridenour is an active member of the St. Louis community, where he supports many charitable causes. Since 1931, Marquard’s has played a vital role in keeping customers’ beloved clothing in prime condition. From restored 100-year-old wedding dresses to World War II uniforms, Marquard’s has been the trusted cleaners in St. Louis for more than eight decades. Nowadays, brothers Steve and Ken Rimell are in charge of the business, which their father bought from John Marquard in the mid-1960s. Going Green
By Kimmie Gotch
A
lthough not everyone celebrates an Irish heritage or St. Patrick’s Day, you can still feel as if you’re part of the festivities by wearing a touch of green – you don’t have to sport a kelly green outfit, obnoxious shamrock accessories or viridian beads. Consider these three subtly spirited ways to acknowledge the holiday coming in just two weeks. Try green eye shadow. Now, we’re not talking lime green here, but emerald hues with a slight shimmer. Many gorgeous green eye shadows will make your eyes “pop,” and luckily, many eye shadow palettes come with varieties of green, brown and bronze shades – allowing you to complete the perfect smoky eye. Especially flattering for women with brown eyes, green shadows also beautifully complement those with blue eyes, so fear not. Line with green eyeliner. If trying the green eye shadow trend makes you grimace, opt for green eyeliner instead. A deep green liner will certainly make your eyes “pop.” You also could line your eyes with black liner and add some green eyeliner to your water line for a fun jade pop. Given the many options available in eyeliner, play around with it till you find what works best for you.

Paint your nails green. Another subtle but fun way to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day involves sporting a mani in that hue. The many different shades of green lend themselves to endless possibilities for an Irish-looking manicure. For a subtler St. Patrick’s Day look, choose a neutral color for your other nails, and pick one nail (usually the ring finger) to be the accent nail – and paint it green. Whatever look you choose, have fun with it! Even if you don’t see yourself wearing green eye shadow, eyeliner or nail polish every day of the year, it may be fun to try at least for one day. Maybe you’ll surprise yourself and love it, adding the look as a staple in your everyday beauty repertoire.

Celebrity Inspiration: Alicia Keys The art of lining your face using professional makeup techniques to perfect cheekbones, create a thin nose and thicken lips has loaded down our skin with layers of product piled upon product. “This past year, makeup was all about cover, cover, cover and highlight, highlight, highlight and contour, contour, contour,” Miller says. “You see it all over Instagram and social media … all these videos drawing lines on the face. It got very heavy. so, now, we seek the ‘no makeup’ makeup look. Conceal only where you need, with as little as you can possibly get by using.” to master the look, think minimalism. Creating breathable skin requires a little tLC, as it’s more about the preparation than the application. Cleansing the face is a vital first step, followed by a layer of protection. Your arsenal of products, though? You can probably carry them all in one hand. It’s all about feeling strong in your own skin. Fresh-faced and fierce should be your beauty mantra for this look. ◗ treat your skin each night, and allow it to heal using a night cream or oil. In the morning, cleanse and apply a good moisturizer to keep your skin feeling nurtured all day long. ◗ skip the primer. “For this look, the makeup is good without even using primer,” Miller notes. ◗ “during the day, switch to a mineral liquid foundation,” she says. Miller recommends MaC’s Mineralize ($38). If you require concealer for blemishes and imperfections, she suggests using MaC’s pro Longwear Concealer ($22). “Just dot where you need it,” she advises, to avoid too much coverage.
lip GloSS
Celebrity Inspiration: Blake Lively Matte reigned supreme for a long time, but 2017 is bringing back the gloss. a dose of dewiness for your pucker delivers a youthful appearance, giving lips dimension. to achieve a shine worthy of the pages of a fashion magazine, bring out your own natural lip color through sheer coverage, or add a tint to up the oomph factor. “You can get a gloss with a stronger tint, if you feel you need color,” Miller says. ◗ “nars has a gloss called Gold digger [price varies] that looks pretty on everybody,” Miller says. “It actually has some gold flecks in it and can go on any skin tone.”
Black liner
Celebrity Inspiration: Victoria Beckham “Black liner has always been in,” Miller says. “This trend, though, is more about an imperfect black liner. everyone can do a version of it. don’t place it perfectly like a wing. Line the top or bottom [of your eye], but not both. On hooded eyes, I line the bottom. On almond-shaped eyes, I maybe line the top but not the bottom. and no wing! If you don’t want a defined look, smudge it a bit with a brush. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

◗ “For those who [worry they] can’t pull off black, use dark brown or neutral lines – not warm browns,” Miller advises. ◗ “For this look, I recommend not buying kohl [eyeliner], which can be very runny,” she shares. “urban decay’s 24/7 Black Velvet [$20] lasts a long time.” LadueNews.com | march 3, 2017

n 1980, right before the U.S. hockey team hit the Olympics ice to win the gold medal and complete the “Miracle on Ice,” coach Herb Brooks delivered a spirited speech to his team. Keep in mind, this is after they’d already beat the great Soviet Union team. Just moments away from playing Finland for the gold, Brooks said, “You blow this, and you will take this to your [bleep]ing graves.” He paused, walked toward the door that led to the ice, glared back at his team and said, “Your [bleep]ing graves.” That’s how I feel right now with our town and the chances of getting the MLS, Major League Soccer. The MLS is currently in love with our town. Right this minute. Unfortunately, love fades. The SCSTL group has put together a quarter-of-abillion-dollar package in private money to make this a reality. Something they won’t do again or the MLS won’t offer again. Currently, there are 11 other cities that would like these expansion teams. However, it is now up to us. It’s rather simple. If you vote yes for the stadium, the MLS will come. If you vote no, it’s over for good. As a person who spends more than 50 hours a week in downtown St. Louis and has a family business there as well, I want more police officers, safer streets and

We can improve the city, and we can become a member of the MLS. How do we say no to a project that will create approximately 400 construction jobs and approximately 450 permanent jobs? How do we say no to a project that will not cost city residents one dime, unless they attend a game? How do we say no to a project that will generate approximately $17 million in positive tax revenue for the city during the duration of the project? How do we say no to a project that is going to impact our community for generations? The other day, I sent one of KSDK’s photographers to the proposed stadium location. It’s 24 acres of nothing – no jobs, no life and no reason to really care. If you vote yes, that land turns into a state-of-the-art stadium that will house not only an MLS team but
also other huge sporting events. The MLS says if you build that stadium, our town will host the All-Star game and International Friendlies. The NCAA told the Sports Commission if that stadium is built, we will also host soccer national championships, small college football national championships and big lacrosse championships. St. Louis is going to get this done. St. Louis is tired of losing to similar-sized cities at getting events. Our time has come to finally win. If we don’t, we will take it to our [bleeping] graves.

Teaching Kids Civility
C
ivility is defined as polite, reasonable and respectful behavior that recognizes the humanity and dignity of others, allowing us to live together in communities. Unfortunately, civility seems to be in short supply in 2017. Name-calling and disrespect for others and their beliefs seem to be the new norm. Cable news networks let us choose “news” that matches our beliefs. Are you a Fox News or MSNBC viewer? The internet creates a civility-free platform for anonymous posts with no accountability. So in this environment, how can parents teach civil, respectful behavior? First, we must understand and acknowledge that human interactions will inevitably produce conflicts. Properly addressed, these conflicts lead to constructive conversations and relationships. We must teach and model these character traits: Trustworthiness. If you make a promise to a child, keep it. Confidence. Children appreciate role models who have faith in themselves. Positivity. Perception is reality. If your child perceives your antidote to be negative, finding the worst in situations, then he or she will do so as well.

The internet creates a civility-free platform for anonymous posts with no accountability. So in this environment, how can parents teach civil, respectful behavior? Children who see a positive approach to conflict and life’s challenges will be confident in their ability to address such things on their own. Encourage your own child, and give the gift of hope. Praise often and freely. Find the positives in your child’s actions, and reinforce them. Imagination. Model creative thought and decisionmaking. Allow your child to brainstorm ideas with you. Children are imaginative. Don’t solve problems for them; rather, facilitate their imaginative approach to problem-solving. Respect. Teach your child to value and support others by insisting that he or she always show respect. Demonstrate common courtesy by saying “please” and “thank you.” 41. Former 43. ROCKING: 3 wds. 44. Tolerance. Teach tolerance of those who differ culturally, in appearance or in ability. Encourage your child to seek common ground with others and to compromise when appropriate. Not every situation has a winner and a loser. Teach your child to accept responsibility for his or her actions and recognize the consequences of those actions. Remember the words of James Baldwin: “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they never fail to imitate them.”

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears! Last summer, the saint Louis Zoo gained one of the nation’s Leading mammaLogists, dr. david PoweLL.
Oh, Boy! By Bryan A. Hollerbach
T
his past August, after more than a decade, Dr. David Powell decided to make a profound professional change by moving from the Big Apple to the core of the country – here. “For the past 12 years, I have been a curator of mammals at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo in New York City,” says Powell, who now serves as director of research at the Saint Louis Zoo. Powell specializes in mammalogy, the zoological branch that studies mice and men, bats and blue whales – and yes, Dorothy, lions and tigers and bears. Moreover, he enjoys a professional profile sufficiently elevated that The New Yorker just quoted Powell repeatedly, in a 12-page feature, on his research into American zoos’ use of euthanasia in breeding programs. He shares an amusing admission about what inspired him to specialize in mammalogy, of all the branches of zoology, instead of, say, herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles) or ornithology (avians). “I was actually initially interested in marine biology, though marine mammals were a part of that,” Powell says. “I was fascinated by sea creatures and kept hermit crabs as pets, as well as ducks. But I think I was always drawn to the larger, more charismatic animals. “When I started to work in zoos, I naturally gravitated toward the mammals. As my career progressed, I’ve certainly become more knowledgeable about the biology of wonderful birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and other creatures. One of the

things I’m enjoying about my new job is the ability to study a wide variety of animals – I’m enjoying learning new things about animals I haven’t been as familiar with.” Identifying himself as “a Southerner by birth” from Atlanta, he continues: “I have had a lifelong passion for animals. I knew very early on I wanted to spend my life somehow working with them. My own early experiences in zoos, aquariums, nature centers and trips to the beach or mountains led me to pursue this career path and do what I could for conservation.” That lifelong passion sparked Powell’s subsequent academic career. “I did my undergraduate work at the University of Miami in Florida, majoring in biology and studying all kinds of animals in zoos, in the Everglades and on the waters around south Florida,” he says. “I then earned a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Maryland, where I studied the behavior of the feral horses living on Assateague Island [of both Maryland and Virginia]. I did my postdoctoral work with the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., on giant pandas in China.” Regarding his previous employer, which one online source describes as “the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States,” Powell makes a diplomatic clarification. “The Bronx Zoo itself isn’t the largest in the nation in terms of acreage, but being part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, it is part of the largest network of zoos,” he says. “The Wildlife Conservation Society operates four zoological parks and an aquarium in New York City.” He also relates what led him from there to here. “I had been to St. Louis a number of times for meetings at the Saint Louis Zoo, so I already knew I liked the look of the city and the various neighborhoods,” Powell says. “After 12 years in New York City, I was ready for a little bit easier lifestyle. New York is a lot of fun and very interesting and
“ stimulating, but also a demanding place to live. “I was able to find a place here where I could still be something of a New Yorker and walk to many things I needed, including to work. Professionally, I was ready to make a change as well. I very much enjoyed being a curator of mammals at the Bronx Zoo, but I was also interested in using my research skills to continue to help zoos continue their efforts in animal conservation.” Given the relative recency of his relocation, Powell does confess to pining for the Big Apple just a bit, while expressing enthusiasm for his new home. “I miss my friends the most,” he says. “No matter what city you live in, it’s your friends – and family, if they are nearby – [who] make your community. New York does offer endless discovery because of its size and incredible diversity, but also because it’s ever-changing. Those of us who have lived there for a while come to crave that continual change and surprise. “In terms of pleasant surprises, people always say Midwesterners are friendly, but once you’re here, you really can see it. Most people greet you as you pass each other by on the street. That’s not something you get in New York City. It’s also nice to be

able to get to almost anywhere or anything you want in 30 minutes or less – there is essentially no traffic here!” On returning to the topic of his vocation and noting that size doesn’t necessarily make a zoo great, Powell reflects on how his current and previous employers compare – and gives St. Louisans one more reason to take pride in their local institution. “Both St. Louis and the Bronx have very active education and field conservation programs, as well as diverse collections of animals that are well cared for by highly qualified, passionate people who share their knowledge with the public,” he says. “These are the cornerstones of excellent zoos and aquariums. “The Saint Louis Zoo has something the Bronx Zoo doesn’t – a research department. Zoo-based research has a strong foundation at the Saint Louis Zoo, and we continue that tradition with an array of projects focused on behavior, reproduction, endocrinology, animal welfare and other fields. “And we study zoo visitors, because they are as much a part of the conservation movement as we are!”

hile many kids make friends at summer camp, not many have the chance to make friends with 300 animals while they’re there. Cub Creek Science Camp in Rolla is the only residential camp in the country with its own zoo. Because of this, campers can hold, touch, feed and care for and learn about the camp’s 100 different species of animals. Campers have the opportunity to have special handson encounters with lemurs, miniature horses, parrots, pigs, llamas, porcupines, foxes and many more. Ari Farley, assistant camp director, says some of the camp’s most popular activities include the Jr. Vet course, which allows campers dreaming about
a career in veterinary medicine to learn how to perform basic exams, give injections and read X-rays. The Adopt an Animal course allows campers to become the adoptive parent of an animal of their choosing for their stay of camp. This includes helping camp’s animal caregivers feed their animal, assist in keeping its cagge clean and making toys for it. Farley says many campers who attend d ar are eepers interested in being veterinarians or zookeepers when they grow up, but camp certainly isn’t limited to those interests. A camp session contains all sorts of activities, from ziplining to archery to friendship bracelets to candy-making.
“We place th is perfect for animal We strive to be a p ace that lovers, but is also an all-encompassing summer camp for everyone,” she says. “We hope to be a unique experience for all animal, science and adventure lovers.” For more information, request a free brochure.

n the Delmar Loop, a new destination for Middle Eastern cuisine fills a familiar side-street storefront. Shawarma King debuted in December, occupying the space that formerly held fast-casual burger joint Zippy Burger. These days, the dining room takes on a pale-yellow hue with royal-blue accents. Five or so tables are available for patrons to enjoy their meals on the premises, with the majority of walk-in orders so far focusing on carryout. Owner Mohammed Alsalem, who was born in St. Louis but grew up in Jordan, is the mind behind Shawarma King. The restaurateur has nearly nine years of experience running area businesses.

“I love the Loop and have worked in the area for years and years,” Alsalem says. “I had the idea to open this restaurant because it’s hard to find food prepared exactly this way in St. Louis.” According to Alsalem, his technique for shawarma (a sandwich of slow-roasted meat topped with hummus and served in flatbread) involves marinating chicken and beef overnight in a mixture of vinegar, spices and olive oil. The tender, seasoned meats then are cooked on a rotisserie and shaved off to order. “We want people to see how we slice our meat,” he says. “We want people to see what they’re eating and how it comes together in the kitchen. We’re doing it the traditional way.”
By Mabel Suen According to Shawarma King’s Facebook page, “shawarma is a lot like a gyro, kind of like a taco, but so different in many ways.” Guests can find the key proteins featured in a variety of entrée options, such as Alsalem’s personal favorite: beef and chicken shawarma with rice served with tahini, garlic sauce and Arabic salad. Another entrée option, chicken or beef shawarma Arabi, features the meats served with fries, coleslaw and pickles. A vegetarian platter, featuring a variety of appetizers, also is available. Cold appetizers include tabbouleh, baba ganouj, labneh and mosabaha – hummus mixed with whole pieces of cooked chickpeas topped with

olive oil, a special lemon sauce and spices. Hot appetizers include falafel, kibbe and ful medames – a spiced fava bean dish puréed with lemon, garlic and tahini. Additional selections include lentil soup and fattoush salad with romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumber and fried pita. Handheld options include chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, mixed shawarma and falafel sandwiches – with fries available for a slight upcharge. tory: Legendary vocalist Billie Holiday saunters S onto the stage at Emerson’s Bar & Grill in Philadelphia near midnight one night in March 1959. It’s about three months before she will be dubbed “Lady Day” by her friend, tenor saxophone great Lester Young – and only slightly longer till she’ll die from cirrhosis at age 44. With a sly grin, she joins her musical accompanist Jimmy Powers, who sits at the piano and leads a trio that also features a drummer and bass player. Dressed in a blindingly white gown with matching white gloves, Lady Day launches into a series of tunes which she regularly interrupts with banter for the small but appreciative audience. She talks to them about “The Duchess,” her nickname for her mother and a woman who has had a vital influence on her. Lady Day also recounts her love of singing from when she was a little girl, when she was known by her real name of Eleanora Fagan, and how she once weighed 200 pounds. She likewise talks about the man with whom she fell in love, whom her mother held in low regard, as did most others of Lady Day’s family and friends. No matter. Lady Day loved him despite his dubious ways. She also mentions offhand being raped when she was 10, adding that that wasn’t even the worst thing ever to happen to her. Lady Day has lived a turbulent life, but has soldiered on, admiring the career of black singer Bessie Smith, as she molded her own artistic ability to improvise jazz singing. She’s continued to perform, even in her days in Artie Shaw’s band when, as a black woman, she was forced to dine in the kitchens of Southern restaurants and not use their restrooms. Holiday mentions being banned from performing in her favorite clubs in New York City while drinking freely throughout the evening from a bottle of booze she keeps nearby. Long-suffering Powers leads her into tunes as best he can, and then Lady Day takes over with powerful, persuasive vocals that reveal her considerable innate talent. Time, however, is running out for Lady Day. Highlights: Alexis J. Roston delivers a bravura performance as the immensely gifted but tragically cursed Holiday, a singer whom Frank Sinatra once called “the greatest single musical influence on me.” Musical director Abdul Hamid Royal and Roston reprise their efforts from earlier productions in Louisville, Kentucky, and Milwaukee in a moving and expert fashion in Max & Louie Productions’ fascinating local presentation. Other Info: Performed in one act and about 90 minutes, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill has the feel of a documentary-style cabaret. With the setting

shortly before Holiday’s death, Roston excels both in interpreting Holiday’s jazz vocal improvisations and in depicting the troubled singer describing her turbulent life both in public and offstage. Previously, Roston portrayed Holiday in an awardwinning production by the Porchlight Music Theatre in Chicago. She also filled the role in 2016 in Milwaukee along with fellow cast member and musical director Royal as Powers. Royal just completed another turn in that role in January at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Similarly, director Leda Hoffmann previously directed a presentation of the show at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. The trio of Roston, Royal and Hoffmann forms the moving force in Max & Louie’s current presentation at Kranzberg Arts Center. Royal and his bandmates – Kaleb Kirby on drums and Ben Wheeler on bass – provide captivatingly precise musical support for Roston, who can shape a song much in the style of the original Holiday. Also worth noting is the patience exhibited by the band during Holiday’s many meanderings under Hoffmann’s meticulous guidance. Beyond the music and singing, Roston inhabits Holiday’s persona, conveying the singer’s losing battle with alcohol and drugs with increasingly slurred speech and slovenly behavior that reaches its nadir when Holiday returns to the stage with one glove rolled down, revealing hideous needle marks on her arm. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill is at times theater, cabaret, biography and American history lesson. At all times, it’s both entertaining and provocative, telling a tragic story from its proper musical perspective.

ART and
P
erhaps exceeded only by tattoo, jewelry arguably constitutes humanity’s most intimate physical embrace of art, as suggested by this month’s work from Carolyn Hasenfratz of Brentwood’s eponymous Carolyn Hasenfratz Design. “It’s 21 inches long, including the clasp,” she says of that work, which bears the title Necklace With Large Striped Image Transfer Beads. “I used silver-colored chain and jewelry findings, suede lacing, small beads recycled from thrift store necklaces and two large wooden beads that I decorated with found images in a striped pattern, applied using image transfer medium.” Her informal résumé might tempt one to suspect Hasenfratz of secretly being triplets. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, she worked as a graphic designer and website designer while taking part in numerous art shows. She also (a) operates an online shop, Carolyn’s Stamp Store (carolynsstampstore.com), which sells rubber art stamps of her own design and other items, (b) teaches crafts at the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft in Maplewood and (c) works at Schnarr’s Hardware in
Ladue, which sells handmade greeting cards also of her own design. “I like to work with a lot of different media, including jewelry, collage, paper crafts, rubber art stamping, mixed media, sewing, upcycling reclaimed wood and other materials, clay and more,” Hasenfratz relates. “I enjoy experimenting and coming up with original project tutorials, templates and lesson plans, which I sometimes publish on my blog or in craft magazines or craft product manufacturer websites.” Regarding the specific creation of Necklace With Large Striped Image Transfer Beads, she recollects considerable and intriguing detail. “I made a series of beads and pendants decorated with image transfers in preparation for a class I taught on image transfer jewelry,” says Hasenfratz. “While working on my project prototypes and lesson plan, I made a lot of extra experimental beads, some of which I designed jewelry around. This necklace is one example. “I get a lot of satisfaction from upcycling materials, and in this project, I was able to combine ‘used’ beads with cutouts from discarded catalogs and magazines to make the image transfers. The most difficult part about
By Bryan A. Hollerbach Image courtesy of Carolyn Hasenfratz
making this necklace was deciding how many strands of small beads to string between the two large ones and how to get the ends of the strands to fit neatly into the large beads for a finished look. … “It was also a challenge to find the staplelike silver crimps that hold the suede lacing together right above the metal rings – I’m not sure where to get more. I had to look through box after box of recycled thrift store jewelry and parts to find something that fit in those spots, functionally and visually. If I can find more of those crimps or something similar, I may return to this design, even though I usually prefer to make new designs than repeat old ones. “Because I used a lot of wood beads as well as lightweight plastic, even though the necklace looks chunky, it’s lightweight and comfortable to wear.”

A new exhibit by Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design at St. Louis Lambert International Airport is a nine-year culmination of talent from its Artists-in-Residence program.

or almost 10 years, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design’s Artists-inResidence program has given emergingto-midcareer artists the opportunity to take six to 12 months to develop their craft in clay, fiber, metal or wood in a collaborative, community-based arts center environment. Artists are provided with a private studio adjacent to Craft Alliance classrooms in Grand Center, a modest stipend and the ability to showcase their work to more than five decades’ worth of Craft Alliance supporters through opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. “The work is so diverse,” says Stefanie Kirkland, Craft Alliance’s director of exhibitions and Artistsin-Residence program. “These guys are taking residency to hone in on their craft and studio – there are so many different techniques that people pick up on.” Residents also teach educational classes for Craft Alliance’s community outreach program. This year, a new exhibition marks a reunion, of sorts, for the artists who have come through the residency program over the past nine years. Through May 14, “Makers: Past + Present,” an exhibition at the Meeting Place Gallery in St. Louis Lambert International Airport, features the work of 20 artists and makers who have participated in Craft Alliance’s Artists-in-Residence program since its founding in 2008, representing the clay, fiber and metal studios. It debuted in early January. “This is the first time I’ve put everybody together from the past, and that was fun – you get to see the breadth of the program,” Kirkland says. “We have people in the show who were our first artists out of the gate [in 2008]: Melody Evans and Damia Smith.” The exhibition speaks to the diversity Kirkland references as an essential characteristic of the program. “It’s sort of like eye candy,” she says of “Makers: Past + Present.” “You’ll go from a clay bear, to a metal butterfly, to
a teapot set, to beautiful jewelry and jewelry that talks about environmental issues.” One of the artists featured in the exhibit is Anna Youngyeun, a current artist in residence in the fiber studio and native of St. Robert, Missouri. Youngyeun came to St. Louis via Kentucky, where she was teaching fibers and printmaking in a visiting position at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. Her piece in the “Makers” exhibition, a fabric keyboard that is part of a series called “Dirty QWERTY,” was made in the wake of Youngyeun’s fourth move within two years, “through each move, leaving behind close friends, peers and colleagues and ending a happy relationship to pursue my career,” she says. “It’s a reflection on personal experience with how technology facilitates my longdistance friendships and affects my outlook on identity and intimacy.” Reed Fagan, a current artist in residence in the metals studio, has included a jewelry piece in the “Makers” exhibition. “The work I selected for the exhibit is just the latest iteration of my experimentations – I’m not even sure that it is a finished piece, but I also find it fascinating to see the artist’s work midprocess,” Fagan says. “This piece of jewelry all started from an installation I created last year. It was based off of a space-filling algorithm known as the Hilbert curve. I wanted to explore this tile as ornamentation for the body in a jewel or pendant-type fashion, which is what I’ve been doing with it since.” Ruth Reese, St. Louis native and founder of the Reese Gallery in the Cherokee Arts District, was a 2013 artist in residence in the clay studio. Her piece in the “Makers” exhibition, The Young Storyteller, features a dark stoneware figure bathed in color that Reese describes as “drenched in hidden energies.” Following the themes of her current work, The Young Storyteller is part of Reese’s journey to “understand the fluid nature of identity within

the lifecycle and then the power of the human spirit to connect with the unseen.” Discovering and exploring this vantage point, Reese continues, “is what makes art meaningful for me, [to] the viewer and to the culture at large, hopefully.” For Reese, Craft Alliance’s Artists-in-Residence program was a turning point. “[It] changed the course of my making, for sure,” Reese says. “That was the beginning of seeing my work in a larger context – through other important eyes. Stefanie, the fellow artists in residence and visiting critics truly gave me a rigorous response to my work that I desperately needed to move forward. I would recommend it to anyone trying to shift [his or her] work into a new phase.” Kirkland keeps in touch with past residents, writing letters of recommendation as they pursue jobs and further art education. Residency program alumnus Michael Parrett recently became the community engagement director at Craft Alliance, and alum Evan Wagman was recently named the education manager at St. Charles’ Foundry Arts Centre. Both are featured in the “Makers” exhibition. “It’s a great community we’re building quietly underground among the artists,” Kirkland says. “They basically get their own support group, too.” As for the “Makers: Past + Present” show itself,
Kirkland is excited to reach a broader audience with the Craft Alliance mission and the valuable Artistsin-Residence program work. “This is my third show we’ve done with [the airport], and they’re always a great partner,” Kirkland says. “It’s up for such a great amount of time, and you get some traction on it. It’s nice for the artists; another venue to show their work is always a great opportunity.” “Our feedback on our exhibitions comes when we see it full of passengers and visitors,” says Jeff Lea, public relations manager at the airport. “‘Makers: Past + Present’ has surely attracted a steady stream of visitors, especially [people] waiting to meet their friends or family coming off a flight in Terminal 1. [The Craft Alliance] exhibitions really allow the airport to give a St. Louis welcome to all our visitors and to remind our residents of what a great artistic and cultural community we live in.” “Makers: Past + Present” runs until May 14 at The Lambert Gallery at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, adjacent to the Concourse C exit in Terminal 1 bag claim.
