EDITOR ‌WHEN I INITIALLY BEGAN TO PURSUE JOURNALISM, IT WASN’T because I was interested in breaking news. I was more interested in sharing inspiring stories of people making a difference in the world. Today, I am so thankful to work for a publication that shares stories about the beautiful and positive people, organizations and businesses that make our community such a vibrant place to call home. For that very reason, this week’s feature in The Daily section made me smile. Starting on p. 64, LN contributing writer Alice Handelman shares the story of Rick Rovak. Rovak was recently inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hall of Fame as an advocacy honoree for his incredible work and dedication to the MS Society Gateway Chapter. We hope Rovak’s heartfelt story, beautifully shared by Handelman, inspires you to also support a cause close to your heart, however you can. Also in this week’s The Daily section, LN’s digital editor, staff writer and puppy fanatic, Robyn is sure to warm your heart. We hope you enjoy reading Effie’s journey to find her forever home. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

AMERICAN RED CROSS OF GREATER ST. LOUIS

Honoring Local

HERO HEROES

C

elebrating 100 years of service to the region, the American Red Cross of Greater St. Louis helps those in need every single day. Since Jan. 22, 1917, the chapter’s volunteers have responded to house fires, floods, tornadoes and even international wars. Each year, the American Red Cross of Greater St. Louis honors area residents at a Heroes Breakfast. This year, these heroes will be recognized in the categories of disaster relief, military, blood services, good Samaritan, emergency medical, nurse, law enforcement, firefighter and community impact. Regional CEO Cindy Erickson says the breakfast is all about honoring people who were going about their daily business and saw someone in need. “The breakfast really focuses on our mission,” Erickson says. “We usually have about 500 people and are able to truly honor these individuals who have done tremendous things for other people.” The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Those being honored at the breakfast perfectly embody that. Also at the breakfast, attendees will have the chance to learn about how the American Red Cross has been able to help the St. Louis community for 100 years. In celebration of this milestone, the organization has monthly activities planned. The week of Jan. 22, participating buildings and landmarks were lit up red to mark the anniversary. In February, the Red Cross announced an art project competition that invites all local artists to design a poster that celebrates the milestone. This month, there will be a Society of Women Leaders centennial event on March 22 at the Anheuser-Busch Biergarten, featuring Col. Laura Lenderman. Lenderman is the

commander of the 375th Air Mobility Wing at Scott Air Force Base and will speak about how women’s roles in the military have changed since 1917. April’s event will be the Heroes Breakfast, followed by a community appreciation celebration in May and a celebration in June at Scott Air Force Base featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. Events will continue throughout the year. “We are so delighted to be able to celebrate our centennial this year,” Erickson says. “It’s all about our volunteers who work so hard to make sure people aren’t forgotten.” One of the biggest disasters Erickson says the American Red Cross responds to is single-family fires. The day LN spoke with Erickson, she said they had responded to three separate fires. “We ended up providing lodging for two families and providing all of them with emergency assistance when they needed it,” she says. “When someone is standing on their front lawn watching their house burn, our volunteers are there to help.” Nationally, the American Red Cross makes a push the weekend of daylight saving time to encourage the public to check their smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks. Partnering with the St. Louis Fire Department, the American Red Cross hopes to install more than 1,200 alarms over the weekend of March 11 and 12. The campaign to install smoke alarms has already saved seven lives in the St. Louis region and 159 lives nationwide in only two years. Individuals who cannot physically install an alarm or cannot afford one can call the Red Cross Smoke Alarm Hotline at 314-516-2797. The Orlando Family Foundation for Charities

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY GALA

Story and photos by David Anderson

A

“golden opportunity” presented by The Orlando Family Foundation for Charities highlighted the Orlando family’s 17th annual fundraising gala, a sparkling, gold-themed event inspired by the family’s 50th year in business. This unique fundraiser encouraged guests to purchase tables in the name of their favorite charity. After a lavish cocktail party, elegant seated dinner and exciting live auction, the name of each charity represented went into a drawing. Three names were pulled, and those charities will split the proceeds for the evening. This year, with 38 individual charities represented in the drawing, Families ROC, Daughters of St. Paul and Feed My People won. The Orlandos have high hopes to reach a goal of $106,000 to split among the three. That magic number would put The Orlando Family Foundation for Charities over $1,000,000 awarded since its inception in 2000.

MISSION

“Everything we do centers on our mission … Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God,” Sandy Koller, executive director of SSM Health cardinal Glennon children’s Foundation, says. “It drives our medical care and goes beyond the hospital.”

HISTORy

cOMMuNITy IMPAcT

ssm health Cardinal Glennon has lived up to its mantra of extraordinary care by becoming the first level i pediatric trauma center and only dedicated pediatric rehabilitation unit in missouri. “Our hospital is unique in that not one child is turned away, no matter their economic situation,” koller states. “That [guiding principle] has been in place since the hospital was built in 1956.”

“We are able to provide exceptional health care right here in st. louis,” koller describes. “Families don’t have to travel far to find excellent [treatment].” The community’s support of ssm health Cardinal Glennon allows the hospital to continue bringing world-class medicine to the area. “The [upcoming] fashion show will benefit The Costas Center inpatient cancer unit, with reading nooks being built in memory of Glennon Guild’s past president, Cindy Brooks, who passed away in 2015. The floor is being transformed with larger rooms for families, private bathrooms and state-of-the-art equipment,” koller describes. The Glennon Guild, a women’s organization composed of 150-plus members, was

founded to support the growth of the children’s hospital. “These things could not happen without the Glennon Guild. it’s amazing … [The Guild] is a unified group of women for which we are thankful for their support as volunteers,” koller continues. “We also are thankful for this year’s presenting sponsor, Dr. Brown’s Bottles.” Cardinal Glennon continues to make history through innovative research and its dedicated team, as is evident by its recent recognition in three specialties in the 2016-17 Best Children’s hospitals list by U.s. News & World report. “Our mission is something i really admire, and it sets us apart,” koller shares. “We are proud to be the only freestanding, Catholic pediatric hospital in the country.”

ON THE BOARD: KElly BIcK Kelly Bick serves as president for Glennon Guild and, in her position, has seen the real difference SSM Health cardinal Glennon makes. “The thing you have to remember is all the lives cardinal Glennon has touched … Family members, children of friends – thousands and thousands of lives,” she says. The women’s organization hosts a number of events and opportunities for people to support the hospital. “We raised more than $240,000 last year, not including the fashion show,” she claims. “In addition, the awareness piece is huge. Starting first with the fashion show, our longest-running tradition in its 38th year, and the Ladue News Show House. We also offer the Glennon card, a card that grants a 10-day period for the recipient to take advantage of a 20 percent discount through participating vendors, [of which] we have more than 300. All that money goes directly to cardinal Glennon.” The annual fashion show and boutique have taken on a new evolution. “We wanted to do something fresh. We moved it to spring, the season of renewal, changing its name to Glennon Style,” Bick shares. “cindy Preszler, founder of weatherstl.com and former chief meteorologist at KSDK-TV 5, is our emcee. We always have a boutique, bringing back popular vendors and changing it up every year by including new vendors.” The event still proudly serves the same purpose, supporting SSM Health cardinal Glennon. “The hospital helps identify a specific need. This year’s proceeds will renovate The costas center inpatient cancer unit. We are building out reading nooks in honor of the Guild’s past president, cindy Brooks. She was wonderful, humble, self-sacrificing – just awesome,” Bick describes.

armer weather is just around the corner, and St. Louisans are itching to hit the links and catch some rays. One of the best places to do that is The Club at Porto Cima, a short drive away at the Lake of the Ozarks. The club’s latest news is that the course is now managed by Troon, which gives members access to more than 270 golf courses all around the world – and Porto Cima is now one of the featured courses. Beth Sullivan, director of membership at Porto Cima, says this is an exciting new feature for the

Porto Cima community. “We’re excited to be part of the Troon family and extend our membership all over the country,” she says. “They are coming in and doing a lot of updating on the building and our programming to bring us up to a state-of-the-art facility.” The course was also just named one of the top 10 courses by Premier Office Magazine alongside famous courses like Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Whistling Straits and more. Porto Cima boasts a golf shop, a restaurant, exercise facilities, banquet facilities and more. Near the clubhouse, members will find the Yacht Club,

which features the marina clubhouse, a swimming pool, poolside dining, tennis and member docking. Sullivan says members have a lot to look forward to this spring and summer at the club. It will be hosting an Easter egg hunt for kids, a car show in October, monthly special chef’s tables, a ladies golf clinic, a junior golf clinic, wine club events and more. For the second year in a row, the Porto Cima community also will enjoy a local art show in the fall, which will showcase artists from the St. Louis area.

A LAKESIDE RETREAT By Robyn Dexter

W

hen the client wanted help creating the perfect lakeside retreat for her family and friends, Diane Rosen of Diane Rosen Interiors stepped up to the mast. Rosen had done the client’s house in St. Louis and was now helping with her house at Porto Cima in the Lake of the Ozarks. This particular room was a tricky one: It wasn’t square, but it needed to sleep nearly a dozen boys ages 5 to 13. “The whole premise is meant to accommodate nephews and nieces and other family and friends,” Rosen says. “This space was originally two rooms, so we removed a wall to open up the space.” Since Pirates of the Caribbean was popular at the time, Rosen drew inspiration from that film and its sequels for the space. “The lockers are part of that,” she says. “Closets are too boring, so I wanted to do something fun for the boys.” To the left of the pictured space is a bathroom and a built-in entertainment wall that houses a TV with an Xbox and games. “The boys really love it,” she says. “It was such a fun project.”

Market-Ready

Real estate By Brittany Nay

Local agents offer advice for prepping your home to hit the market.

B

efore homeowners place the “For Sale” sign in the front yard, it’s important to envision their property through buyers’ eyes, local real estate agents say. When preparing a home for the fiercely competitive St. Louis real estate market, sellers should contact a local real estate agency to inquire about its services and how an agent can help them make their property as move-in ready as possible, notes Christy Thompson, an agent with Janet McAfee Real Estate in Ladue. “You might have become accustomed to the look of your chipped front door or the dingy carpet-runner down the hallway, but it’s the first thing a buyer might notice,” Thompson says. “Small fixes, such as a new coat of paint, carpet cleaning and a visit from the window washer are easy items to check off your list.” Thompson also recommends removing excess furniture and clutter that can crowd rooms and distract from the features of your home. Sam Hall of Warner Hall Thornhill at Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty in Clayton agrees that sellers should perform a walk-through of their home and compile a list of the small issues that need to be addressed to make the property market-ready. “Cracks in the walls or discoloration on the ceiling can signal to buyers that the home is not well-kept and has issues they have to fix if they buy it,” Hall says. “We try to help make the house look brand-new – or an older house look as good as possible.” Creating a customized plan for the sellers is essential, notes Jill Kelly, an agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate in Chesterfield. “The plan always begins with an honest evaluation of what the home needs to be marketready, to include purging, cleaning, painting, staging, cosmetic updates and repairs,” Kelly says. “I always state my motto, ‘Clean sells,’ and look for simple changes that will not break the bank. For instance, changing the color of the front door and the shutters can make all the difference.” Kelly has an excellent contractor she recommends to complete everything and get a home market-ready. Keith Manzer, an agent with Laura McCarthy Real Estate in Clayton, recommends homeowners bring aboard a fresh set of trusted eyes. “Put yourself in the [buyer’s] shoes,” Manzer says, “and hire a stager or a friend who has a good eye for [style and design].” Outside, he says it’s important that the front door extends a warm and welcoming first impression, and inside, sellers should neatly store any clutter, repaint in neutral colors and place furniture in attractive groupings. A common question agents help home sellers through is when to place their

property on the market. Thompson advises clients to list their house as soon as they are ready, regardless of season, with the exception of the month of December, when buyers are distracted by the holidays. “Well-priced homes available during the winter or late summer months often sell more quickly,” she notes. “With fewer choices on the market, there is less competition for sellers, and buyers feel a sense of urgency to submit an offer.” One of the most common problems homeowners tackle when preparing to sell their home is the proper staging to attract the best possible price, Hall says, noting that today’s “HGTV effect” is a stumbling block for some sellers. “They watch these shows and start to do what they say: Declutter and remove personal photographs and artwork,” he explains. “But in our markets of Clayton, Ladue and the central corridor, this can remove the character from the house, and it looks very sterile. These personal items can help [buyers] envision themselves in the house, so we help them stage in an attractive way that doesn’t take the personality out of the home.” Another challenge sellers face is the emotional aspect of letting go of their home, local agents say. “[When] a family has lived in a home for a long time, [there can be] years of accumulated memories and possessions to consider,” Thompson says. “I know firsthand how emotional a move from a longtime home can be, and I do all I can to connect these sellers with handymen to make necessary repairs, estate sale companies to assist with [any] unneeded items, and even to find the right packing and moving company.” Hall says he often helps families in a career or life-stage transition – a difficult time to sell a home. “The challenge is how do we make a neglected house feel alive again, so we help sellers make the property look as enticing as possible by getting it clean and completing small repairs that will make it photograph well,” he says. “[In] this day and age, it’s 100 percent about photography and videography – because the hardest part is getting the [buyer] out from [behind] the computer to tour the house in person.” Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate, 17050 Baxter Road, No. 200, Chesterfield, 636-537-0300, bhhsall.com Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty, 8301 Maryland Ave., No. 100, Clayton, 314-725-0009, sothebysrealty.com Janet McAfee Real Estate, 9889 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-997-4800, janetmcafee.com Laura McCarthy Real Estate, multiple locations, lauramccarthy.com

And if the idea of a truck-turned-mobile boutique isn’t enough to catch your eye, 22-year-old owner and operator Katharyn “Kat” Fish says she gets plenty of double takes when people glance over to see her perched in the driver’s seat, flashing a quick smile and waving as the truck rumbles on to its next pop-up shop destination. Mobile boutiques began emerging on the scene around 2010, when boutique owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in New York and Los Angeles noted the success of the food truck movement and modified the concept to be a fit for fashion. By 2014, the American Mobile Retail Association reported that in all 50 states, the industry had grown to nearly 500 fashion trucks. Young entrepreneurs like Fish are drawn to the lower barriers to entry, with startup costs at a fraction of what a brick-and-mortar store would entail. For the consumer’s benefit, the adage of “If you build it, they will come” has taken a customer-centric focus: Build it, and take it to them. “I’m glad I went this route first,” Fish says of deciding to launch as a mobile boutique. “I didn’t take on that kind of debt, and it was better for me. Honestly, it’s worked out a lot better because my customer base is all over St. Louis, versus one area.” A native of south St. Louis County, Fish was raised in a “very entrepreneurial” family. “My parents have always owned their own businesses, as well as extended family and grandparents,” she says. “I knew it was something I wanted to do, but I had no idea how to do it – it kind of happened.” Fish’s light-bulb moment occurred right after high school, as an 18-year-old enrolled in a freshman coding class at a local community college. For the class, Fish had to create several types of websites, and one assignment was an e-commerce site. “That’s where Kat’s Closet was really born,” she says. “I built the website, and after I did it, I thought, ‘I think I might actually want to do this.’” Fish dipped into her savings account, took a loan from her parents and began selling the Kat’s Closet collection online with clothes she purchased from retail markets in Dallas and LA. She expanded her business by doing local trunk shows at private

homes and businesses, packing her inventory into her car to haul it from place to place. She began looking into a storefront when she was 19 but was hit with sticker shock at the startup costs. “I started doing some research and stumbled upon a truck out in LA,” Fish recalls. Her research led her to discover the growing fashion-truck scene in St. Louis, and she knew she had found her place. “I have to do this, this is my niche, this is what I can do,” Fish told herself. She tracked down an old, beat-up truck for sale in Illinois; its seller had bought it to use as a food truck, a plan about which he later changed his mind. “It was a metal box,” she says, which needed a lot of love. Her business became her supportive family’s newest project, as Fish’s father, Randy, spent 10 months helping her restore the truck. The pair added insulation, put up wooden walls, painted the interior and added baseboards, and then hired Waser Cabinetry to add central pieces to create the effect of stepping into a massive 128-square-foot walk-in closet – complete with a dressing room – as shoppers enter the mobile boutique. Exterior design was done by The Graphics Co. in Sunset Hills – “It’s bright and colorful; you can’t miss it,” Fish says. Kat’s Closet hit the streets of St. Louis in August 2015, setting up shop at corporate offices, business parks, restaurant parking lots, hair salons and, most notably, Truck Shop Saturday, a monthly event at Tower Grove Park that reflects the concept of large food-truck events but with a collection of retail trucks. Fish partnered with friend and fellow mobile entrepreneur Emily Ponath of Rack + Clutch to launch the program this past November, with events planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the third Saturday of the month year-round. With such limited space available compared to her brick-and-mortar contemporaries, Fish is very selective with the items she carries in her shop. “I really dive a lot into what’s on trend – I try to keep the trends of the season at the forefront of the store,” she says. Following fashion

bloggers and shopping the latest retail markets in Dallas and LA, Fish’s truck may lack basic T-shirts, but it always will have those statement pieces that will have people asking, “Where did you get that?” “It’s more that middle-of-the-road, cute and casual, fun, even flirty, going-out-ona-Saturday-afternoon items – that one dress that’s going to stand out in a crowd or that top or blouse that everyone’s going to compliment,” Fish says. In addition to clothing, Kat’s Closet carries jewelry, scarves, sunglasses, handbags, wallets and cheeky coffee cups. This spring, Fish is noting trends that are retaining their staying power – lace, stripes, pops of color, and shades of blue and green. The lush emerald green from fall is lightening up a bit, and gold jewelry remains queen. For the year ahead, Fish plans to expand her reach by setting up additional pop-up shops each month and ramping up her private-party service. She provides the party service for free, with a minimum requirement of 15 guests. “I would like to see that side grow because it’s fun for people, and I enjoy that a lot – my favorite part is dressing people and making them feel good about themselves,” Fish says. Kat’s Closet’s schedule is available on the mobile boutique’s website, as well as the Kat’s Closet app, which includes a truck tracker, easy online shopping and a Kat’s Closet loyalty program with special deals, alerts and events. Private parties can be scheduled through the Kat’s Closet website or by contacting Fish directly at kats.closet.net@gmail.com. Kat’s Closet, 314-258-5288, katscloset.net

Savory Oats Breakfast Bowl

‌M

Story, recipe and photography by Sherrie Castellano

y ideal first meal of the day involves something savory, not sweet – something I can serve in a bowl and enjoy while snuggled up on the couch under a blanket, with a cup of

coffee in hand. If you haven’t ever tried oats in a savory application, this is a great starting place. The oats create a solid base, the egg and Greek yogurt add protein, and the goat cheese and hot sauce bring a dash of umami, plus a little heat. It’s simple yet versatile, allowing for great flexibility with additions and toppings.

What happens to the house when we get divorced? St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

When parties get divorced, the house is often one of the largest marital assets. In some cases, the parties can agree on what is going to happen with the house. But in other cases, the parties can disagree. In cases where the parties do not agree, the disposition can be complex. It can often become one of the biggest issues in the way of resolving the case. Many individuals ask their attorney what will happen with the house if they cannot agree. Each case is different and different judges and courthouses might have different preferences. But all things being equal, there are generally three realistic possibilities in many cases.

60   March 10, 2017 | LadueNews.com

First, the parties might agree to put the house up for sale or the court might order it to be put up for sale. In these cases, the parties end up splitting any money earned through the sale of the home, in some ratio, after indebtedness is paid off, the real estate commission and the cost of the sale. Likewise, if any money is owed, the parties end up splitting whatever amount that turns out to be in some ratio. The other two general possibilities involves either the husband or the wife retaining the house. They then re-finance the house and buy out their spouse for their portion of the equity. To determine what that amount would be, a real estate appraisal becomes necessary in many cases where the parties cannot agree on the value. There are certainly other pos-

sibilities and complexities that can come into play as well. For example, same parties may be completely unable to work together to sell the home. In those cases, the parties might agree, or the court might order, the appointment of a commissioner to referee and coordinate the sale. Of course, the commissioner would generally be paid a fee for these services. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. Happily Ever After

Effie

AND THE DELANEY FAMILY By Robyn Dexter

‌ONCE UPON A TIME, EFFIE THE PIT

bull terrier was found wandering the streets of East St. Louis, pregnant. Gateway Pet Guardians took her in, and she gave birth to 10 puppies, all of whom were named after characters in The Hunger Games. Effie weaned her puppies, and they all went to forever families – while she waited at Gateway Pet Guardians for her forever home. Jason Delaney and his daughters, 16 and 19 years old, had to put their dog down, and it had been about six months without a dog in their lives. Delaney knew it was time to get another pup. “I had several friends who had gone through Gateway to do adoptions,” Delaney said. “I got online and found Effie and wanted to go meet her.” Delaney took Effie outside to play and went for a walk. By the time they got back, about 15 minutes later, “it was a done deal.” “I wanted to take her home right then, but I had to wait until that night,” Delaney says. “She snuggled up on the couch and knew this was where she was supposed to be.” Delaney said that while all Effie’s puppies quickly went to forever families, Effie just wasn’t being adopted. He was told that Effie had a lot of anxiety and could be destructive, but he didn’t care. Delaney wanted to give

Effie the best life he could. “I’ve always had dogs. They’re not just dogs – they’re part of your family,” he says. A week after Delaney adopted Effie, Gateway Pet Guardians called to see how everything was going. “I told them my biggest concern was that while I have a king-size bed, I only get about six inches of it, and Effie gets the rest,” Delaney says with a laugh. “She also makes sure I’m safe from all the squirrels in the backyard.” They’ve had Effie for about six months, and Delaney says she really “completes the family.” “Everyone who meets her absolutely loves her,” he says. “She’s beautiful, smart, regal, a total princess and a great protector.” Delaney was a little worried about Effie meeting his parents, since they were used to small terriers and didn’t have much experience with bigger dogs; however, Effie won them over right away with kisses. “I’m so fortunate to have gotten her,” Delaney says. “There’s nothing better than coming home after a long day at work and hearing her tail thumping just inside the door.”

I ride with the hope that the money I raise might include the last dollars needed for research that finds a cure. – RICK ROVAK

Dedicated volunteer Rick Rovak parlays his sales experience and photography skills into fundraising for charities including those aiding multiple sclerosis, breast cancer and more.

A

fter spending 40 years traveling the world as a shoe salesman, Rick Rovak has parlayed his sales experience and expertise into fundraising and advocating on behalf of charities. Feeling blessed that his family is healthy, the 71-year-old spends countless hours each week using his persuasive and artistic skills to help those who are less fortunate. Small in stature but mighty in conviction, Rovak, in 2016, was the only person in the U.S. to be inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) Hall of Fame as the Advocacy Honoree. His association with the MS Society’s Gateway Chapter began in 2001, the first year he rode in what was then called the MS 150 (now Bike MS). Rovak has participated in the ride each year since, some years riding as far as 200 miles in two consecutive days. After the 2017 ride in September, he will have raised approximately more than $100,000 for the organization. “I ride with the hope that the money I raise might include the last dollars needed for research that finds a cure,” he says. “I ride because I can.” The cause of MS is still unknown. It’s an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of Rovak being inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis information within the brain and between the brain Society Hall of Fame as the Advocacy Honoree. Photo supplied and the body. On Sept. 9 and 10, Rovak will once again ride to help fund research and “find a cure for this horrific disease.” This year, Walk MS will be held April 1 in Forest Park to raise funds for people affected by MS. Rovak says he began volunteering for the local MS Society “right after I started taking part in their bike rides.” He volunteered to take photos at the area Walk MS events as well as the Women Against Multiple Sclerosis luncheon. He was then tapped to join the grant review committee and now chairs the government relations advisory committee, the advocacy wing of the organization. He has attended public policy conferences in Washington, D.C., as well as advocacy days in Jefferson City. He also was honored with the Inspiration Award by the Gateway MS (St. Louis organization in 2013. Dedicated to creating memories through photography, Rovak says he bought his first Nikon camera at age 20, while Rovak at a Bike MS event. Photo by Scott Rovak preparing to travel through Europe on $5 a day. His intention was “to put together a photo journal of all the memories I would make.” What resulted, however, was a passion for photography that has enabled him to see life in a more detailed and rich way.

“I love capturing the beauty of land and its people on my journeys,” he says, adding that he’s traveled to almost 30 countries and 49 states (North Dakota being the missing link). Photographs featuring barns, buildings, flowers, oceans, people, landscapes and wildlife are available for sale on his website. “I marvel When: April 1, site opens at 1 p.m., at nature,” Rovak walk begins at 2 p.m. says. “I was a Nikon fan until 2015, when I Where: Forest Park, Upper Muny Lot began photographing with a lightweight Cost: Registration is free. mirrorless Fuji camera. A nice byproduct of my To Register: photography is that I walkmos.nationalmssociety.org have been able to use this talent to raise money for charities and provide a service.” He has taken photographs to archive activities at Camp Rainbow, a free camp for children with cancer or blood disease, in the summers and at camp-ins at local pediatric oncology hospitals. “I’ve captured the excitement of children in the hospital working on arts and crafts projects while undergoing chemotherapy infusions for cancer,” he says. “These cherished moments become invaluable memories for families.” A graduate of University City High School and Saint Louis University, Rovak was lauded in 2013 as an Unsung Hero by the St. Louis Jewish Light newspaper. He has served as vice president of Jewish Family and Children’s Services and was recently approved as a substitute teacher in the Ladue School District. Guided by his insatiable appetite for making a difference in the lives of others, Rovak is a board member, past president and former interim-executive director of Gateway to Hope. “I love this organization and am thankful every day that no one in our family has been touched by breast cancer,” he says. “Gateway to Hope helps people who need immediate access to health care. We pay insurance bills for men and women who have breast cancer who are either uninsured or underinsured. Sometimes I cannot believe that an ex-shoe schlepper can get this close to saving a life.” Married for almost 50 years to his high-school sweetheart, Louise, Rovak has two daughters and six grandchildren. The couple live in Creve Coeur and will celebrate their golden anniversary in June. “I had a crush on Louise, but it took time for me to convince her to be mine – my salesmanship must have begun at that moment,” he says. If you are in Forest Park on April 1, look for Rovak at Walk MS. He’ll be carrying his trusty camera and capturing the faces of men, women and children who are walking to make a difference … one step at a time. “With every step taken by participants and every dollar raised, we are closer to ending MS forever,” he says.

Try the signature item with filling combinations such as the STL Philly Phatada with thinly sliced marinated steak, sautéed peppers and onions, ancient-grain pilaf, Chihuahua cheese and queso. Another selection, the Cantina Fish and Chip Phatada, features spicy seared tilapia, beer-battered cod, lemon-caper rémoulade, avocado slaw and French-fried potatoes. Quesadillas and nachos topped with smoked meat and veggie options also make up a bulk of the menu.

“This is basically a brick-and-mortar food truck. Everything is designed to go in completely biodegradable, compostable containers,” Ayala says. “On the menu, you’re going to see some very melting-pot-inspired food pulled from street food from all over the world.” Small bites include items such as biscuit beignets, Doritos-crusted mozzarella sticks and hot-butteredpopcorn chicken available in home-seasoned or Nashville hot flavors, served with melted garlic butter. A Philippine lumpia-inspired appetizer comes with your choice of jackfruit, shrimp or chicken filling with cream cheese, pickled papaya slaw and sweet banana dipping sauce. Poke cups hark back to Ayala’s days as a sushi chef in Chicago, featuring deconstructed sushi over warm rice. Selections include the Four-Alarm Tuna with spicy chopped yellowfin tuna, cucumber, cilantro and avocado. The Jerk Shrimp consists of garlic-butter shrimp, grilled pineapple, yuzu-glazed carrot and jerk sauce.

Salad options include the Yum Mi salad with mixed baby greens, pickled papaya slaw, roastedchili chicken, cashews, crostini and sweet-papaya vinaigrette. Breakfast items include scrambled-egg cups and mini-silver dollar pancakes with toppings including spicy popcorn chicken or bananas foster. All of which sound like great grub before catching a showing of Zorba from New Line Theatre. To drink, Crave offers frozen aguas frescas in flavors such as watermelon and papaya. Bottled sodas, fruity Calypso lemonades, coffee and tea also are available. “I was able to do riffs on what my father was doing, take it to the next level and have it be this whole new evolution for this generation of modernfood enthusiasts,” Ayala says. “We’re trying to take the pretentiousness out of food and bring it back to Earth for people who enjoy solid flavors.”

Crave Street Food, 2605 Washington Ave., St. Louis, 314-696-8480, wecravestl.com

‌Story:  Local residents are gathered in a Greek bouzouki parlor, swilling drinks and swapping stories in merry camaraderie. An older man in the group approaches a young visitor at a nearby table and introduces himself as Zorba – a self-proclaimed expert at everything he knows and “really good” at what he doesn’t know. The young man identifies himself as Nikos, an American. He has come to Greece after inheriting a mine on the island of Crete from an aunt. A teacher by trade, Nikos carries an assortment of books by the likes of Lenin and Buddha, which mildly interests the inquisitive Zorba. Zorba convinces Nikos to hire him as his right-hand man for the work to be done in Crete and to oversee the employment of locals to work the mine. Once there, Nikos and Zorba learn the town includes an unhappy but attractive widow and a flamboyant Frenchwoman, Madame Hortense, among its population. While Zorba tutors Nikos in the art of living life to the fullest, his lusty exuberance fuels the desires of the amorous Hortense. In contrast, the tentative Nikos takes a slow, deliberate approach to building a relationship with the Widow. Life is all about opportunities, and both Zorba and Nikos react to the situations before them in their respective ways. Highlights:  A lesser-known musical by lyricist Fred Ebb and composer John Kander, Zorba demonstrates the duo’s remarkable talent for creating intriguing and intoxicating musical stories. Directors Scott Miller and Mike Dowdy-Windsor take this rarely performed work and mine its rich potential in a highly entertaining presentation by their energized cast in this New Line Theatre production. Other Info:  Kander and Ebb were joined by writer Joseph Stein for the original 1968 Broadway production of Zorba, which they based both on the Oscar-winning 1964 film Zorba the Greek and the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis. One can hear musical similarities between Zorba and two better-known Kander and Ebb musicals, Cabaret and Chicago, as well as character consistencies between Zorba and Tevye from Stein’s earlier Broadway smash, Fiddler on the Roof. As Tevye was known to quote “the Good Book” while weaving his sundry tales, Zorba heartily launches into his own stories, regardless of the receptive mood of his audience. And like the masculine Tevye, Zorba as depicted by Kent Coffel is a virile man’s man who embraces the gusto of life with every bit of his body, heart and mind – the third of which, he tells Nikos, is always guided by the first two. Coffel is a delight to watch in Zorba’s comic moments, such as the character’s wooing of the attractive Hortense, but crafts his musical interludes

shrewdly, as well. He’s also mighty fine with dancing to the delightful choreography of Michelle Sauer – especially in a touching moment when Zorba recalls reacting to the death of one of his children. Lindsey Jones is a wise choice as the warbling Leader, guiding the ensemble in a rollicking version of the opening number, “Life Is,” as well as several other tunes, including the lyrical “Top of the Hill” in Act I and the haunting “The Crow” in Act II. She possesses a voice with a full, deep range and uses it expertly to set the tempo of the show. There’s convincing work by Margeau Steinau as the smitten Hortense, who tests the maneuverability of the lusty Zorba with sly and not-so-subtle hints about marriage, accentuated in the rousing number, “Goodbye, Canavaro.” Ann Hier brings a melancholy ache to the role of the Widow, who’s mocked and ridiculed by her insolent neighbors but finally finds solace in the arms of Nikos. An exception to the cold treatment given the Widow is the aching love of the young peasant Pavli, played richly by Evan Fornachon, who outshines the other male members of the ensemble with his deft dancing ability, as well as his polished acting. Nikos is played in suitably understated fashion by Dominic Dowdy-Windsor, whose character yields the stage to the extroverted Zorba in a number of comic scenes, as well as sharing a tender tune with the Widow and the Leader in “That’s a Beginning.” “The only death,” says Zorba, “is the death we die every day by not living.” Zorba the musical will lift your spirits and make you appreciate what you have all the more with its wisdom and its zest.

Ready Readers Countdown to Spring

A

s spring nears, nature once more comes alive, and Ready Readers has just the right books to ready your family to discover the season’s wonders. This month, the organization will gift copies of Bear Counts by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman – one book that celebrates spring – to 10,000 children living in low-income communities around St. Louis. In Bear Counts, Bear’s world is bursting with color and buzzing with life, as he and his friends Mouse, Hare, Badger, Gopher and others romp, swim and swoop while counting treasures in the trio of habitats forming their woodland environment. The variety of animals depicted allows young readers a chance to observe each beast’s physical characteristics, noting both their similarities and differences. Kids also should visually devour Chapman’s lush two-page picture spreads, filled with funny, friendly critters. After turning a given page to see vignettes of objects and creatures found in a setting, children can eagerly return to the extended spread to locate such objects and creatures in the larger picture. As in all the books in the Bear series, Wilson’s flowing rhymes should encourage children to read along, anticipating their turn to repeat the refrain, “Numbers,

numbers everywhere. Can you count along with Bear?” Also, the brilliant colors in which Chapman highlights number words and numerals appear on the front cover and inside end pages, allowing yet another opportunity for matching. A second captivating counting book that should appeal to toddlers through preschoolers comes from author and illustrator extraordinaire Eric Carle. Carle’s first solo foray into picture books, 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo, originally appeared in 1968, a year before his classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. At first glance, wordless books like 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo might seem to have limited appeal to growing youngsters. But parents and others who have experienced the delight of observing imaginative children “reading” to themselves can attest to the confidence sparked by such books. Every interaction should provide a new opportunity

By Sheila Oliveri for children to notice fresh details, focus on additional attributes and tell a different story. Parents who may be daunted by the thought of coming up with their own story might want to relay the action through a specific character’s point of view – or, in the case of Carle’s book, use as narrator the little mouse found on each animal page. The joyous colors of the menagerie in 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo should incite excitement as children enjoy this wordless introduction to numbers, counting and addition. Carle’s painted collage art looks distinctively vibrant and appealing. As a bonus, an interesting second story unfolds as the zoo train grows at the bottom left of each new animal page. The gatefold spread at the end of the book beautifully unites all the zoo scenes, perfect for visualizing the setting as a whole. Parents may appreciate bringing this book along on zoo trips, thumbing through the pages during train rides from one destination to another.

“Beauty Is Truth” – and Art Is Joy By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos by Sarah Conroy

As his centenniAl edges ever closer, the centrAl West end’s leslie lAskey continues to do WhAt he does best: conceive And creAte.

I

nterviewing local artist Leslie Laskey, frankly, prompts a degree of trepidation verging on terror. That feeling in no way stems from any personal failing of Laskey, a professor emeritus of architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. Rather, it arises from the suspicion that the 96-year-old landmark with legs has seen and done more than any four men half his age – and the realization that he remains quite vital and creative despite having been born, in southwestern Michigan, before the Great Depression. With a well-fed Australian Cattle Dog named Louie – “the boss of the house,” the home’s supposed owner remarks with a small smile – Laskey occupies a stately Central West End brownstone whose entrance two small obelisks flank and whose exterior northeastern wall bears a bust of Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger (he of infamous “Et tu, Brute?” fame from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar). After the better part of four diversified decades at Washington University, Laskey, hilariously, reduces his métier, simply, to “basic design. I taught – I painted, did sculpture, woodcuts.” Of his ongoing work, Laskey (with tongue perhaps a bit in cheek) confesses, “I’ve been painting at least 50 years, and so I know a little bit about it. I do a lot of discovery in what I do. I like to paint. I like doing collage. I like working at a small scale, and I also like working large.” Aptly, at the time of the interview, Clayton’s Bruno David Gallery was spotlighting an exhibition of Laskey’s recent work – incredibly, his ninth such in that showcase – entitled “Duets.” Just as aptly, the exhibition, which opened on Jan. 12, closed on the 18th of February – the second month of the year, as well as the one containing Valentine’s Day, the annual celebration of couples. “I find a rhythm, and then I let it take me where I’m going,” says Laskey of his conceptual process, his hands swooping and fluttering like mating avians as he does so. “I listen to it. It’s like the ‘Duets.’ I would start with an area, and I find out how much room I have. “And then I find out, well, what am I going to do in this room? And when we’re talking about duets, I find the magic of two or finding out what two are. So I have multiple images, then two of them match. There’s always a puzzle.” An enormous puzzle – albeit a pleasant puzzle – surrounds the fact that Laskey even survived to find such rhythms and ensorcell local art aficionados with them. More specifically, as a member of the U.S. armed forces during World War II, Laskey took part in D-Day, the historic June 6, 1944, amphibious start of the Allied invasion of Normandy, France. Beyond being equipped with weapons and other gear as a combatant, Laskey relates

74

march 10, 2017 | LadueNews.com

that he served a supplemental function in that historic assault. “I was taking photographs, and I lost my cameras in the invasion,” he recollects. “A halftrack pulled the straps of my cameras, and I dropped them right off the beach. … ” Had the straps held, Laskey continues, the military vehicle’s back continuous track likely would have harmed or even killed the extemporaneous cameraman – literally embedding him in Omaha Beach. “We had been floating around in the channel, back and forth, to delay the landing, to perplex the Germans,” he says of the history-making adventure. “And so we were in not very good gut shape – we were puking our guts out.” After living through both the invasion and the war, biographical material on Laskey from the Bruno David Gallery states, “He studied at Indiana University and at the Institute of Design in Chicago (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) with founder and American Bauhaus pioneer Lászlò Moholy-Nagy,” referring to the German art school that operated from 1919 to 1933 and combined the fine arts and crafts. Thereafter came Laskey’s 35-year tenure at Washington University, where he continues to maintain a pedagogical profile. By way of example, Laskey mentions still periodically participating in “crits” – critiques – and charrettes (basically timed, collaborative planning/design sessions involving problems and solutions related to proposed architectural or other projects). Otherwise, Laskey remains astonishingly vivacious, both physically and mentally, at an age when too many people succumb to infirmity or ennui, transforming themselves into invalids with assistance from, say, television or rosy nostalgia instead of continuing to engage with life. In short order, for instance, he mentions walking more than a mile each morning; voices an offhand recommendation for The Telomere Effect by Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel, a biochemistry-based New York Times best-seller published just this past January; and alludes to the difficulty of staging art exhibitions in St. Louis. For a few moments, Laskey dwells further on “Duets,” which ranged from a delicate 9.75- by 11.5-inch collage on paper, whose vivacity of color (a jubilant orange) if not its tangrammatical angularity recalled Henri Matisse’s great Jazz, to a black-and-argent stainless steel sculpture towering 8 feet tall. Reflecting Laskey’s impish wit, the collage and the sculpture shared the title Duet – like four more works in the exhibition. Other titles incorporated phrases such as duo and, charmingly, billet-doux or differentiated between works with numerals: Duet I, Duet II, Duet III, Duet V (but no Duet IV) and a wholly incongruous Duet 12. Regarding the largest of the “Duets” works – the 8-foot-tall sculpture, majestically displayed during the exhibition in Gallery 2 – Laskey admits to a fondness for working in metal. “I did little studies, like folded pieces of paper,” he says, “and it got bigger, and it got bigger. And I decided, ‘Well, how big can I make this?’”

Duet

Billet-doux

With assistance from a retired friend with equipment capable of machining sheet steel roughly a quarter of an inch thick, the answer to that question eventually led to Duet – or rather, that particular Duet. “It’s a way to think,” Laskey relates of his process of conception and creation. “I find a problem – I discover a problem. I start thinking with my hands, and I try to find a parallel. Then, suddenly, I have a name – so it’s ‘Duets’? What does that mean? … And eventually, I can work on the whole stream of ideas.” In context, Laskey’s process sounds analogous to St. Louis poet T.S. Eliot’s critical concept of the objective correlative or to leitmotifs in opera and other musical works. “It’s a challenge,” he says. “It has to have a theme that I can work with, expand, so long as I work. I just can’t externalize. I have to work at a still life because of something else.” At the highest levels, Laskey’s aesthetic may well recall the great English Romantic poet John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn”: “When old age shall this generation waste, / Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe / Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say’st, / ‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’ … ” “I don’t really like talking about the work,” Laskey ultimately confesses. “I think you have to, in a way, hear what you’re seeing, and you have to see what you’re hearing. “People ask, ‘Well, how long did that take you to do?’ Well, I don’t care, and I have no idea. The idea is, it’s the doing that’s the joy. That’s the way it should be. And you look at [a finished piece], and you say, ‘This works. Now it’s done with. It fits here or belongs there in this sequence.’”
