EDITOR ‌IF YOU’RE A HEALTH-CONSCIOUS PERSON, YOUR DIET LIKELY consists of fresh, nutritious ingredients that will benefit your body long-term. However, what does your beloved pet’s diet consist of? Surely it’s not the spinach salad topped with fresh ingredients that you’re eating. Starting on p. 63, LN copy editor extraordinaire Bryan A. Hollerbach shares the story of FreshStartSTL, a St. Louis-based nonprofit that strives to end homelessness “by providing employment by preparing exceptional pet food.” And the pet food definitely sounds exceptional. Full of quality ingredients like peas, carrots, yams, liver and more, this food will likely “set tails a-wagging” as Hollerbach puts it; in addition, the company is creating job opportunities in the St. Louis community. We hope you enjoy learning about this nonprofit as it tries to change the world, one bag of kibble at a time. Also in this week’s edition, LN contributing writer Denise Kruse talks to local interior designers to share tips for decorating your little one’s bedroom. Starting on p. 29, Kruse speaks to two designers about how they create a vision and make it a reality for clients and their kiddos. We hope that you enjoy this fun feature and that it inspires future home renovation ideas for you and your family. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

rowing older often affords you more time to enjoy both the little and big things life has to offer. McKnight Place Assisted Living is here to ensure you don’t miss a single moment. “We try to do everything at the next level – the amenities, services and staffing levels McKnight Place offers are truly unparalleled,” director of operations Bob Leonard says. “Several things set us apart: We’ve been doing this for more than 25 years, having started in 1990 before assisted living was really a recognized option. We have a large team of experienced, attentive staff and more events, trips and activities than other communities. Our food is outstanding, thanks to chef Anthony Lyons, who is from Ireland and has trained in St. Louis country clubs. He was named the 2012 Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation’s Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis,” he shares. That covers only the basics offered at McKnight Place. The community currently is expanding its campus to offer larger, more flexible accommodations. “Suites have evolved in the last five years,” Leonard explains. “We expanded for two reasons: The 45-room unit we currently use is always full, so we needed more capacity, and we wanted to create bigger rooms. Residents can choose from four floor plans. All are located on a campus where independent living and skilled nursing are also offered – all under one roof – making it easier to move to different parts.” Leonard breaks down the benefits of these new spaces. “The new apartments go up to 783 square feet and include crown molding, 10-foot ceilings, and wood-style flooring and granite countertops in the kitchenettes and bathrooms,” he says. “Lots of natural light comes in through the huge windows, and each apartment has its own individual heating and cooling, just like you would have in your own home.” Additional benefits include a newly renovated theater, beautiful outside gardens and walking paths, a greenhouse and fountain, a main dining room and bistro with a private dining room

available for rent, a billiard room, a full-service beauty salon and spa, a dedicated art room and more. “We have a wide range of events and activities, including a philosophical café and a political discussion group. We also have book reviews, and art and music instructors on staff,” Leonard shares. Exercise classes are also included in the list of offerings, from tai chi and ballet for seniors to stretching, balance and yoga classes. “We have what we call predictable pricing, which is an all-inclusive rate,” Leonard states. “Some places have complex pricing structures or mandatory add-ons that raise the cost for residents. From medicine reminders to meals to cleaning and laundry to events and activities, all is included in our price. We even include two professional moving consultants who create a design based on your new floor plan and take care of shipping items, securing movers and arranging things once you’ve arrived.” McKnight Place also guarantees residents still have access to what the community can’t offer on-site. “We offer a limousine-type service, as well as a bus and van to transport residents,” Leonard notes. “Residents can go to the zoo or art museum. We went to the wineries in Augusta and the St. Louis Symphony recently. The bus will soon be taking residents to Forest Park for a barbecue.” The future looks bright for McKnight Place as it continues to plan for more improvements in the months to come. “This new building will help us continue to be the leader in assisted living communities,” Leonard says. “We’re set to open 90 new rooms in October. We also plan on renovating our existing area and converting it to memory care units in January 2018.” Reservations are available now. COCKTAILS AND CLOWNS

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

Y

oung Friends of St. Louis Children’s Hospital recently hosted a cocktail party at The Coronado in St. Louis. The event benefited the Clown Docs program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and featured live music, a raffle and a silent auction. Guests enjoyed various libations, hors d’oeuvres and complimentary valet parking. The hospital strives to use various forms of play in a nurturing and supportive environment to decrease stress and anxiety for children, youths and families during health care experiences. Therapeutic hospital clowning, like that in the hospital’s Clown Docs program, involves the purposeful use of clowning and its associated skills to address the psychosocial needs of hospitalized patients and their families. Laughter elevates heart rate, increases oxygenation of blood, lowers stress hormones, massages muscles and vital organs, and decreases pain. Kyle and Courtney Mach

ith a night-at-the-movies theme, this year’s Alzheimer’s Association gala truly was “an affair to remember,” as 500 attendees raised more than $500,000 for the programs, support and research that are essential to the organization’s mission. Held in the Khorassan Ballroom at The Chase Park Plaza, the event featured a cocktail reception, raffle and silent auction, followed by a wonderful program and dinner featuring remarks and a live auction, before music and dancing rounded out a splendid evening for an important cause. Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects a growing number of people. Many of our clientele are later in their years. They’re retired, and this is a very, very important issue and cause for them. I’m in sort of an almost unique position here, in that I am both a critic and a performer. So I can appreciate the difficulty and the work involved in putting a show on, at the same time as someone who writes about theater and classical music and cabaret. [M]y responsibility as a writer is to my audience, to tell them whether it’s worth seeing or not and why. But at the same time, when I write that, I’m always cognizant of the fact that the people I’m writing about, you know, they’re working very hard, and even if sometimes the result isn’t great, you know a lot of work has gone into it, and you have to recognize that.

Peter & Paul community services – Garfield commons 2612 wyoming street Join PPCS for a special evening of delectable food and engaging entertainment at its annual gala dinner, Under One Roof. Featuring a three-course dinner by Westwood Catering, the evening includes silent and live auctions and a performance by soul and Motown singers Vince Martin and Dawn Turlington. Proceeds from Under One Roof support the programs of PPCS working to end chronic homelessness in the St. Louis region.

MISSION

Peter & Paul Community Services (PPCS) provides housing and supportive services to those who are homeless, especially those who experience mental illness or live with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). For more than 30 years, The PPCS values of hope, empowerment, compassion, hospitality and independence have stood as a testament to the thousands of volunteers, supporters and alumni from St. Louis and beyond who have come to consider PPCS a part of their community.

HISTORy

COMMUNITy IMPACT

In January 1981, a local homeless man froze to death in soulard. After hearing of his passing, individuals from the community decided to work together to reach out to others in the area who were homeless and in need of help. PPcs board chair Bill salzman says that since then, the organization has

The programs include two emergency shelters, a meals program, the Labre center (which offers case management for the homeless and mentally ill), a Positive directions Program for homeless people living with HIV/AIds, safe Haven for the chronically homeless and much more.

Louis. “our slogan is about solving homelessness together,” salzman says. “It can be a daunting task, but we see progress happening. As we’ve proven, we can do it when people work together.”

DESIGN GONE SWIMMINGLY By Robyn Dexter

I

t all started with a fish tank. Candice Wideman of Youtopia Designs was brought on this Creve Coeur project as the client was building his home. The main thing he wanted in his living room was a fish tank, which became the starting point of the entire room design. “The main goal was to make the space look nice with the tank,” Wideman says. “I didn’t want the traditional lighting on top of the tank, so we did pendant lights over it.” The client liked the idea of combining midcentury and rustic looks. Based on the flooring, they opted to lean more toward the rustic look. The wood paneling on the wall behind the tank is dimensional, with each piece a different depth. For the midcentury aspect, they added abstract artwork and a particular style of the couch. “We added a tree stump table that’s made entirely out of metal to bring kind of a funky vibe,” Wideman says. “This whole space was a fun, funky design we got to do, incorporating color. Those little bits of color really make everything pop.”

Dreamy Spaces By Denise Kruse | Photos courtesy of Cure Design Group

LocaL designers give tips for furnishing kids’ bedrooms in styLes that evoLve with their own.

F

or kids’ bedroom décor, there’s a pretty thick swath of time between the nursery and teen years that becomes almost a “no parent’s land” of style. You can predict what the older version of your kids will like in hopes they won’t demand an overhaul a few short years down the road, keep them in their “baby” room a little longer or take the advice of the two designers LN enlisted to help navigate this style wilderness, in order to create a dreamy space that will grow with your child.

Step 1: Create a viSion Having even baseline ideas, such as colors or themes, can be a great place to start. “There is a multistep process involved in designing any room – even a kid’s room!” says Amie Corley of Amie Corley Interiors in the Central West End. When working with clients, she begins with presenting big-picture ideas, usually pulled from photos on idea-sharing social media such as Pinterest and Instagram, and then moves into design schematics and design boards with furniture, fabric and wallpaper selections, as well as floor plans and wall elevations. Similarly, senior designer Cori Dyer at Cure Design Group begins with an in-home consultation with all “decision-makers” for the space – in this case, both child and parent. That consultation considers the client’s wants, needs, budget, time frame and lifestyle – kids’ bedrooms are, by necessity, multifunctional, serving as play spaces and study areas as well as sleep zones – before creating digital design boards based on these. Teen clients typically come prepared with room inspiration via their Pinterest boards. “Ultimately, they get to live in the space long after the design process is over,” Dyer says. “We want this to be enjoyable and a reflection of them for years to come.”

Step 2: anChor the viSion in reality In creating the initial vision, it’s important to bear in mind that tastes change as kids grow. “All kids and teens have personal interests and style,” Dyer says. “Our job as designers is to translate those interests into a timeless design that will be able to grow with them for years to come.” Corley recommends injecting some timelessness into kid tastes to extend the lifetime of the design, as she did for one local client, incorporating ultrachic blush walls with soft matching window treatments. “I love painting walls in a more grownup shade of blush pink rather than the bubblegum shade a little girl would most definitely pick from a paint deck,” Corley says. “A little pink goes a long way.”

Step 3: think outSide the box Although many home-styling articles advise ensuring continuity of color and style throughout the house, kids’ bedrooms aren’t held captive to this guideline – they can be colorful and fun and don’t necessarily need to “communicate” with the design in the rest of the house, Corley says. “It’s a room that can be full of pattern and whimsy – as parents, we spend so much time in our kids’ rooms, and making their rooms beautiful and fun is always a priority,” she adds. Corley also encourages parents and kids to go bold in their rooms. “I’m a big fan of pattern on pattern, and balance is the key to making it work,” Corley says. Countering a small-scale print, such as the small animal-print rug used for her client, with a larger-scale pattern, like the blue floral print bolster and desk chair, is key. “I love a fun wallpaper in a kid’s room,” she adds. “If you’re nervous about wallpapering a whole room, do the ceiling instead. It will give them sweet dreams to see something

30

pretty on the ceiling. I’ve done everything from stars to clouds to animals on ceilings in kids’ rooms. It’s a fun way to add in pattern.” Dyer echoes Corley’s sentiment in a trio of room redesigns she did for a St. Louis family with teen triplets. Each space reflects the individual girl’s interests and styles. One of the sisters, Elizabeth, loves the contrast of black and white. Dyer incorporated black sparkle wallpaper on the ceiling and a Stray Dogs chandelier to add drama and whimsy to Elizabeth’s lime green walls, adding even more special touches with bright custom window treatments by Designers Guild and a custom fur poof chair at Elizabeth’s desk. Elizabeth’s sister Anna, an avid skier, had her room accented with Designers Guild wallpaper reminiscent of the blue skies of Anna’s favorite ski slopes in Sun Valley, Idaho, which serves as the backdrop to a bright CR Laine custom magenta headboard. A scalloped light fixture over the bed contributes to the feeling of open sky. The third sister, Catherine, wanted her space redesigned in orange and pink. With most of the room painted in Sherwin-Williams’ neutral Agreeable Gray, Dyer incorporated Catherine’s style with pops of color throughout the room – a bright pink accent chair, orange and pink throw pillows and wall art, and high-gloss pink walls in Catherine’s study nook. Creating “zones,” Dyer says, allows for easier transitions in style. “Creating a homework zone or hangout/lounge zone for friends is a great way to establish the functionality of a space,” she says. “Starting with a good base design allows for the design to easily change color palette or accent pieces in a few years without starting all over again.”

Step 4: inveSt Any room overhaul is an investment, but often, inexpensive shortcuts end up costing more in the long run, especially when furniture lifespan is limited by quality. “Don’t buy ‘kiddie’ furniture because it’s cost-effective,” Dyer advises. “The best way to create a timeless space for kids and teens is to start with furniture they can transition into.” “Invest in classic pieces that don’t go out of style,” agrees Corley, recommending custom curtains with blackout liners for a guaranteed extended nap time and more grown-up lighting. (Corley loves the scalloped lights from Coleen and Company.) Patterns should also reflect youthfulness without echoing nursery styles. “No bouncing elephants,” Corley says. As personal interests are ever-changing, Dyer suggests incorporating these with accent pieces, accessories or artwork rather than big-ticket items, which reflect the kids’ style in a much more cost-effective way. “Establishing good quality and timeless pieces of large furniture is often the starting point, and then layering in ageappropriate interests in the finishing touches is where we make the space unique to them,” she says. Corley agrees. “The less expensive things – artwork, linens, accessories – can be more age-specific, as they are easy to switch out.” Amie Corley Interiors, 5235 Lindell Blvd., Central West End, 314-496-6022, amiecorley.com Cure Design Group, 118 Roxbury Drive, O’Fallon, Missouri, 636-294-2343, curedesigngroup.com

Style Speak

‌Designer Dianne Isbell has been handcrafting haute couture hats, fascinators and perchers for women for more than a decade. As a young girl growing up on a farm, the visionary designer loved creating her own private fashion shows in one of the family’s many barns. Isbell grew up, earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and, while working in civil service, established an etiquette business that brought about a new hobby: making Victorian hats. For her hat-making company, Hats by DI-Anne, Isbell creates one-of-a-kind chapeaus for every occasion, including hats, fascinators and perchers for weddings, church, special occasions, themed parties, black-tie events and, perhaps the most famous of all hat-wearing events, the quickly approaching Kentucky Derby. Moreover, her creativity has caught the eye of celebrities: In 2012, Isbell created a custom hat for the marketing rollout of Fame, Lady Gaga’s perfume line. Her designs are currently part of an art exhibit in Wausau, Wisconsin, and as part of the Degas exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum, Isbell will be teaching a basic course, “Making a Fascinator,” on Saturday, April 29. Where do you get your design inspiration? I get my design inspiration from a lot of sources. Sometimes I actually dream a design, wake up and write it down before I forget it. All my dreams are in color, and because of that, my “dream designs” are even more realistic and exciting. I think my “dream designs” are the result of my waking thought processes of how I am going to design a customer’s custom request. During my waking hours, hat and fascinator designs are continually floating around in my head. Whether I am planting flowers, baking a cake or riding in the car, I am thinking about hats and fascinators. There are literally a myriad of inspirational items around me all the time. Ideas are especially prominent when I am inside a fabric store, home decorating store, department store, antique store or a flea market. I can see a vintage brooch or a shoe buckle, vintage feathers or a piece of vintage beaded lace at a flea market, and an inspiration for an entire design will pop into my mind. A piece of fabric or trim will catch my eye in a fabric store, and I know I have to buy it to create another one-of-a-kind design. Even a unique place mat or Christmas ornament may wind up in one of my creations, and no one will realize its original purpose. New or vintage buttons, for example, make beautiful centers for flowers, as well as beads from necklaces. How do you construct the hats and fascinators – are they all made by hand? My fascinator designs start with a headband, perhaps, or sometimes with just a piece of stiffened felt and a 2½-inch hair comb. I cut out a small flower pattern from the felt, which will match the colors swirling in my head. I make a second, and then hand-sew on the hair comb.

46   April 28, 2017 | LadueNews.com

Then I hand-sew on a piece of small matching trim on the top and the bottom edges of the felt to give it that finished look. Next, I grab either a long piece of horsehair or sinamay [a hat-making foundation woven from processed stalks of abaca trees], and I begin gathering and folding and creating something or some things, which I then start sewing onto the base I have previously created. At this point, I then may add another color or width of horsehair or sinamay. Next, I may decide to add the perfect silk flower or flowers, veiling or bling and then feathers of my choice, which may be ostrich, peacock, striped coque, duck, goose, etc. Some feathers I carefully bend and curl into different shapes or cut into chevron designs. [For brims and crowns], I purchase what are referred to as “blank hat frames” made of straw, sinamay, felt, satin ribbon and horsehair (or a combination thereof),

By Denise Kruse

which I can remove, take apart, alter and reattach to create my own unique design. I can then create designs from the same long pieces of horsehair or sinamay and sew onto the hat frame. Flowers, ribbons, veiling, spines, bling and feathers can also be added to complete an overall unique, one-of-a-kind design ready for purchase, or fit onto a customer to match or complement her outfit. I also take apart vintage hats which have been damaged in some way, and use various elements of [them] for my designs. What sorts of hat trends are “in” for this year’s Derby Day and the annual Forest Park Forever Hat Luncheon? One-of-a-kind, unique and tastefully wild are always in demand and appropriate. The same applies for the annual Forest Park Forever Hat Luncheon. Because what I create is a reflection of me, I choose not to design inappropriate or outrageously stupid. In mid-July, the Kentucky Derby Museum will once again be announcing their 20 hat selections for a yearlong display in their museum. I will be submitting several of my designs worn by my clients at this year’s race, in hopes of one being selected once again for the museum. Are the hats and fascinators on your website and Facebook page pretty indicative of a typical Hats by DI-Anne price range? Prices may vary depending on the types of materials requested for the design, but basically, a custom-designed hat starts at $175, and a fascinator, $145. My customers who return from horse-racing events always tell me they see hat designs in various shops which are much more expensive and not as unique or beautiful. Where can people purchase your hats? My designs are available at The Designing Block at 7735 Clayton Road in Clayton. The designs on my website and my two Facebook pages can be purchased by inbox messaging me or calling me. I also conduct various trunk shows and pop-up shops all over the Metro East and St. Louis areas, as well as vend for charity events and conduct private in-home events. Appointments for custom designs can be scheduled in my home or customers’ homes. I prefer to see the customer’s dress and shoes/purse for custom design creations. I also occasionally prefer to have these items in my home studio to allow me to compare shades of possible materials in outdoor lighting as well as indoor lighting. Providing me with photographs of the dress or outfit I am matching can be helpful as well, when it is not possible for me to view the dress in person. Trunk show dates and other scheduled events at which my designs will be available for purchase are available online.

dam Foster’s masterful attention to detail is what sets not only his collections but also his storefront, Adam Foster Fine Jewelry, apart. “My main goal is for people to walk in and [realize] this is not like any other place,” he says. “I honestly think that, yes, it’s important to make brick and mortar relevant [again], but we want a place people leave talking about. It’s about making it an experience.” From his unusual combination of materials, such as black with rose gold, or of textures, like brushed metal with intricate engravings, his unique pieces have an ethereal quality to them that easily draws the eye. “[My designs are] striking originals, even if they have something classic to them,” Foster says. “I want people to comment on the things my customers wear. They say, ‘Adam is the guy I go to talk frankly about what I want to buy and build.’ Even if someone walks in and just sees something, there’s a story behind each piece.”

Foster focuses on the future of each piece and where it will be decades from now. “I want to make sure the jewelry is timeless. You can look back the second or third generation and still consider it something really unique and beautiful. Look at it as fine art – that’s how I approach it,” he says. His creations are also available at Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers. He avoids trends, while recognizing how contemporary features can translate to his creations. “There seems to be a jump in mainstream jewelry where using those precious or semiprecious jewels allows you to ignore color theory and design practices, and still expect it to look OK. I get people to look at materials in a way that makes them look through it and say, hey, let’s put these things together and make a design,” says Foster. His team also can bring new life to old pieces or design something from the ground up, working directly with clients to translate their vision. The effect is infectious as customers – from the fellow who walks in, not knowing what he should be looking for, to the avid collector – instantly become engaged in the process. “Think of [the store] as a museum you can take home things from,” Foster says. “You get buzzed by things [both] on [and off] display. Have a drink at the bar and try on things. It’s a totally different way to do it. Everything down to the décor and how we operate within the space. We’re on the same side as the customer. Ask me anything; have a face-to-face conversation about where this piece comes from and how it was made.” Adam Foster Fine Jewelry, 1600 S. Brentwood Blvd., Suite 410, 314-771-3390; also available at Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers, fosterjewelry.com

Apologies – and Forgiveness

‌I

t was January 1, 1954, and the Crimson Tide, the University of Alabama’s storied football team, faced the Rice University Owls in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Alabama led by three points. On the fourth down, Alabama punted. The punt returner for Rice, running back Dicky Moegle, caught the ball and headed down the sidelines. He broke through the Alabama defenders and was headed to a 95-yard touchdown when something unexpected happened – interrupting what seemed like a sure thing. One of the Alabama players, Tommy Lewis, jumped off the sidelines and ran onto the field without his helmet. To the amazement of spectators in the packed stadium and millions of other viewers of the nationally televised game, he tackled Moegle, then ran back to the bench and sat down. The officials awarded a touchdown to Rice, but that failed to mollify the crowd, which appeared to want blood. Attendees of the game screamed, “Throw him out!” along with other things that weren’t nearly as polite. Lewis sat on the bench with his head bowed, we assume, contemplating why he did such a thing – even though football, as a game of emotion, often makes it is

easy for players and others to get caught up in a frenzy. Lewis couldn’t explain his action any more than any of us can explain some of the impulsive things we’ve done. We knew better, but we acted on impulse, on the spur of the moment, without thinking. We thought we were doing the right thing, yet in hindsight, it became glaringly clear it wasn’t. So Lewis sat there on the bench in shame, listening to attendees as they hurled insults at him. It undoubtedly was a lonely moment of total humiliation and disgrace for the young man. Then, as the teams left the field at halftime, something else suddenly happened that caused the whole stadium to grow strangely quiet. Lewis ran to Moegle and put his arm around the Rice running back’s shoulder. It was his way of apologizing. In an interview many years later, Moegle recalled, “At first, I thought it was one of my teammates, but it was Tommy Lewis with tears streaming down his face. He apologized, and said, ‘I don’t know what got into me.’” Here’s the takeaway from this story: We all should demonstrate the willingness to forgive those who undermine us, lie to us and make life difficult for

us. Our determination to succeed in spite of all such negatives – and more – and our willingness to forgive form character strengths in leadership. Such forgiveness ranks as a difficult but necessary competency for leadership – so go forth and practice that competency. Oh, and did I mention that Rice won, 28-6?

Do Your Research

I

have a newspaper clipping taped to my office computer monitor. (Yes, it’s old school, but it sticks out to clients.) The clipping asks this question: What are the most common mistakes candidates make during job interviews? According to an Accountemps survey that involved 1,000 senior managers, the No. 1 mistake for interviewees is having little or no knowledge of a company. Of those 1,000 senior managers, 38 percent reported this as their biggest complaint. This may be surprising, but I see this problem frequently among my clients who come in to prepare for employment interviews. Every time I ask such clients, “What do you know about this firm?” the response usually consists of a long pause accompanied by a dazed look. I then explain the clipping and gently advise, “We have to do some research.” Research simply involves exploring a company’s website. Interview candidates should spend at least half an hour reading about a company before any interview. A company’s website customarily discloses its mission statement, which I recommend the candidate know by heart and reflect on in planned answers. Company websites also disclose vocabulary – the key words company employees likely use from day to day. The candidate should attempt to use said vocabulary in answers to show he or she

would fit into that corporate culture. A company’s website usually also discloses the goals it has in serving customers – an important message the candidate should incorporate into his or her answers. Finally, by exploring the careers portion of a website, the candidate can likely find and review the job description of the position he or she is interviewing for – helpful before an interview for both midcareer professionals and those just entering the workforce. Unfortunately, new college graduates, especially in my experience with clients, tend to not read job descriptions in detail before blasting out dozens of résumés alongside generic cover letters – a big mistake to be addressed another day. Showing you are well researched on a company is key to success in any interview – necessary, not optional, if you really want to win a job. I’m not saying the candidate should recite notes from a company’s

website. Interviewers will see through that! Simply showing in-depth knowledge multiple times in your own words is enough. By the way, the other top mistakes the senior managers mentioned above reported were lack of preparedness to discuss skills/experiences (20 percent), lack of preparedness to discuss career plans/goals (14 percent), lack of eye contact (10 percent) and late arrival (9 percent). Fortunately, with attention, all of these can be fixed.

A warning shot that a divorce is coming: Money is being moved St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Unfortunately, for some individuals, a marriage might be on shaky ground. During times like this, individuals could be talking about the possibility of divorce. There could be disagreements and strife in the marriage itself. In a lot of marriages, there might be arguments and differences of opinion. There could be hard times but the individuals might not actually intend on getting a divorce. In many marriages, this is very much the case. Some individuals might have a hard time deciphering whether or not they are just in difficult times in their marriage or whether a divorce is actually about to take place. Some truly may not feel as if they know the intentions of their spouse. Every situation is different, therefore, uniform rules can not always be applied. But one fact that might very well lead a party to know the intentions of their spouse is the moving of large sums of money from a bank or investment account.

The laws of every state vary. For this reason, a party should consult with an attorney who is licensed and competent to practice law in their jurisdiction. Generally, parties are not to move marital funds while a divorce is pending or reasonably anticipated. But in some circumstances, a party might move money anyway. They might move it from a joint bank account, or investment account, into an account in their name. Some individuals might not move all the money, but maybe just a portion of the money without any advanced notice or conversation. While this might not be a sign of a looming divorce in every circumstance, this can certainly be a big warning sign in many cases that a divorce is about to come. After all, why would a party be moving significant sums of money (without any discussions or agreement about this) otherwise? In some marriages, the couple might agree to maintain separate bank accounts. This is normal in many marriages because some parties might have different

spending and saving habits. But when significant sums of money are being moved without any prior notice or conversation, a party should certainly be concerned. In many of these cases, it might be time for a party to begin considering their options quickly if this has happened to ensure that marital money is not transferred, concealed, dissipated or encumbered without their assent — and without their ability to bring it back into the marital estate. The reality is that the movement of money is often a significant sign that a divorce is about to be filed, and to prepare appropriately if so. Local nonprofit Freshstart sTL seeks to benefit “man’s best friend” – and in so doing, to benefit man’s best friend’s best friend.

uel local constituencies – one four-legged, the other two-legged – profit in vastly different fashions from the good works of FreshStart STL. That St. Louis-based nonprofit social enterprise strives to embody its name in a tandem fashion in accordance with its main mission, to “end homelessness by providing employment by preparing exceptional pet food,” according to its website. More specifically, states the site, it seeks to provide a fresh start both “to homeless individuals by providing employment, [by] providing a linkage to a network of affordable housing and by providing individual mentorship and socialservices support for those who have experienced homelessness” and “to dogs and cats by preparing exceptionally high-quality natural-protein food that improves their health and prolongs a high quality of life.” Steven Coffey – one of the co-founders of FreshStart STL, which launched slightly more than two years past – sketches what inspired its foundation. “It was the outgrowth of a Methodist book-study group [that] challenged churches to think outside their walls to help others in need,” Coffey says. “Four initiatives were the outcome of the study … : Bridge Bread employs homeless men and women by making bread and rolls; HomeFirst STL provides affordable housing; FreshStart STL provides employment for homeless men and women by making

food and treats for dogs and cats; and New Beginnings provides free beds and starter furniture to veterans and people in need who are moving into their first affordable housing.” At present, according to its website, FreshStart STL’s products number just three: beef dog food, beef dog treats and lamb dog treats. To suggest the quality of those products, FreshStart STL’s website lists the ingredients of its beef dog food: beef hearts and livers, carrots, yams, peas, blueberries, fish oil, apple cider vinegar, desiccated liver and Norwegian kelp, as well as amino acids and enzymes, imported yeast cultures, flaxseed, lecithin, garlic concentrate, Lactobacillus acidophilus and calcium citrate. Although certain of those ingredients might sound less than appetizing to many humans, they likely would set tails a-wagging among Fido, Rover and Spot, in addition to Rin Tin Tin, Lassie and Cujo. (OK, maybe not the last, whose tastes took a decidedly unsavory turn.) Although an embarrassing lack of thumbs prevents canines from Yelping FreshStart STL’s praises, local canines’ stewards suffer no such lack, as the nonprofit’s Facebook page establishes. “My Lucy loves your treats!” one such steward posted recently. Somewhat earlier, by way of a potential slogan, another had enthusiastically suggested, “Ever thought about using ‘Pet Nutrition With a Mission?’” Even earlier, a LadueNews.com | APRiL 28, 2017

third cynophilist had gushed, “It was so great to visit you guys at the market on Saturday – I can’t wait to see the pics and video of my corgi, Walter!” Among other felicities, the high-protein raw meat used in FreshStart STL’s products distinguishes them from many if not most of the nonprofit’s bagged or canned competition. That does impose on FreshStart STL’s products a complication not faced by, say, melamine-fortified kibble shipped from China: keeping them frozen until 15 to 25 minutes before hitting the dishes of Pongo, Perdita and the other 99 Dalmatians. As a result, though, the nonprofit’s website claims FreshStart STL products “are metabolized more effectively than any highly processed dry filler,” yielding elevated energy levels, improved coat and skin quality and (“best of all since more of the food is absorbed in the body”) more compact and less odorous waste. All well and good for Marmaduke, Odie and Snoopy, but as noted earlier, FreshStart STL freely confesses to an underlying, human agenda – to empower “those who have been rejected, devastated and dismissed as valueless,” according to its website. “Individuals, families and youth have been devastated by high unemployment, loss of health care [and]

family support, and poor life choices,” the site, presciently, continues. “Federal and local safety nets have collapsed or disappeared.” Coffey provides details on the previously homeless “associates” employed by FreshStart STL. “We hire two to five people a week for seven to 12 hours, depending upon the season and sales of food … ,” he says. “All the proceeds from sales go to pay for food and salaries. We only pay the homeless partners – management is all volunteer. … We work as demand allows for salaries to be paid. We are constantly looking for new outlets and donors to help pay for equipment, supplies and rent.” There in the Centenary United Methodist Church startup kitchen or, later in the spring, the Saint Louis University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Salus Center Kitchen, Coffey adds, an additional “10 to 15 volunteers float in and out, serving meals and mentoring men and women during workdays, ordering and delivering food, [placing] marketing calls, working on social media, handing out treats at farmers markets – in short, making food, learning and befriending the staff.” Tellingly, Coffey revisits the subject of FreshStart STL’s staff. “We have had 10 to 12 men and women involved in the program since the beginning,” he says. “Some have been able to find more work; others have regressed into old habits. This is not a perfect success story. … “Our real mission is to help people who have, by their own wrong decisions or [through] circumstances, found themselves in need. These people have few choices to get their lives on track – few will hire them. Often the individuals don’t know how to respond to a normal work environment. They need an opportunity and coaching in life skills. Some take advantage and flourish. “Unfortunately, others don’t – that’s the heartbreaking reality.” Those interested in buying FreshStart STL products and supporting its good

works can do so at select metro-area locations: A Company of Two, Murphy’s Mutts & Cuts, Pets in the City, all Straub’s locations and Tower Grove Farmers’ Market. Beyond the nonprofit’s general retail endeavors, Coffey notes FreshStart STL partners with Stray Rescue of St. Louis’ Puppies for Parole program at Illinois’ medium-security United States Penitentiary, Marion. Selling treats to that program, he says, “allows inmates who are close to being released to train dogs for a 12-week period. The dogs graduate as trained, adoptable dogs, and the inmates receive a certificate as a trainer. “The program uses our beef heart-and-liver treats as a training device. [The program’s organizers] tried other products, but came back to ours because of the high-response success rate.” In short, in an increasingly dog-eat-dog world, FreshStart STL – whose website includes a photo of a golden retriever and a border collie going snout to snout in a canine meet-cute reminiscent of the famous spaghetti scene from Disney’s 1955 Lady and the Tramp – seeks to cultivate a degree of innocence and even beneficence akin to puppy love. Clients often come to us out of frustration because they don’t have confidence in their own knowledge of the facts. We have the software and the service to help them feel in control again.” A family office client of Fox’s company had nothing but praise for the software and Fox’s team. “I have waited for years for a tool like this to become available,” he says. “We don’t spend time chasing the information. rganizing and managing information is no small feat. People with large, complex estates often have busy lives with many moving parts, and keeping all aspects straight can be daunting. Richard Fox, an attorney and non-practicing CPA, launched Family Wealth Map, LLC to help prominent families and their advisers manage large amounts of information. We knew that when we took the space, half of it was glass, so we wanted to play on that a little bit. Warehouse windows make each room feel a little more private.” Ken Schwartz of Florida’s SSA Foodservice Design + Consulting designed Vicia’s kitchen, where Michael Gallina works with his staff to craft refined dishes that feel as fresh as the clean-cut room where they’re served. Pastry chef Summer Wright, formerly of Reeds American Table in Maplewood, heads the desserts program. Many of the items on the debut counter-style

lunch menu (from March 22) came from the Gallinas’ pop-up dinners of the past six months. “It’s light power food to make you feel good after you eat, leaning toward vegetable-forward but incorporating interesting cuts of meat as well,” Tara Gallina says. “We really want to have the menu always be a variation on menu items such as a sandwich, a tartine, a green dish and a soup.” With spring’s arrival, moreover, Vicia has added a quiche of shiitake, spinach and scallions, served with a mixed-greens salad — which sounds like a great choice before catching The Lion King at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. Other examples of what visitors will find include a sandwich with grilled ham, whole-grain mustard, whipped ricotta and spicy greens on focaccia. ‌Story:  Head lion Mufasa rules Pride Rock as “king of the beasts.” He presides over a flourishing kingdom, loved by his queen, Sarabi, but despised by his younger brother, Scar. When Mufasa and Sarabi’s male cub, Simba, is born, he’s presented to the other animals by the wise mandrill Rafiki as part of “The Circle of Life.” Scar resents that Mufasa is king and is further angered that young Simba will inherit the throne. Over time, Scar plots various ways to murder Mufasa, finally succeeding when he lures Simba into a stampede of wildebeests. Mufasa rescues Simba, but dies after Scar pushes him back into the stampede. Scar quickly ascends the throne with a menacing group of hyenas as his henchmen. Simba is convinced by Scar that the lad caused his father’s death and at Scar’s urging flees into the countryside. Unknown to Scar, the hyenas fail to follow his orders to kill young Simba, letting him escape into the jungle. There he’s rescued and raised by a wisecracking meerkat, Timon, and his pal, an affable warthog, Pumbaa. When Pumbaa years later is stalked by a lioness in desperate need of food, she turns out to be Simba’s childhood sweetheart, Nala. She convinces Simba to return home and reclaim the throne from his treacherous uncle, who has destroyed the onceflourishing pride land. Highlights:  Based on the 1994 Disney film of the same name, The Lion King is a magnificent spectacle of a show. The eye-popping, jaw-dropping puppetry designed by director Julie Taymor and Michael Curry has dazzled audiences for more than 8,000 performances on Broadway since its opening in 1997 following a tryout in Minneapolis. The show has since spawned tours nationwide, as well as in several foreign countries. Its six Tony Awards were well earned for direction, sets, costumes, lighting and choreography, as well as Best Musical. Other Info:  The current production at The Fabulous Fox Theatre marks its fourth touring version in St. Louis. The show retains its considerable magic and wonder, with a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi that harkens to Hamlet and features such Disney staples as the affable friends of the hero, in this case Timon and Pumbaa. The beauty of The Lion King lies in the breathtaking artistry of the masks and puppets, creations that took a staggering total of more than 17,000 hours to assemble for the original Broadway production. The show is the third-longest running musical ever on Broadway and the highest-grossing Broadway production of all time, with more than $1 billion in revenue. It’s also the top-earning title in box-office history for both stage and cinema. Performers who maneuver the puppets speak in unison with their animal counterparts, achieving a stereo

effect of sorts in the presentation. Their flair is enhanced by the resplendent costumes designed by Taymor, complemented by a rainbow of hues incorporated into Michael Ward’s hair and makeup design. Richard Hudson’s scenic design focuses on the Prime Rock locale, aided by screens that depict various jungle aspects, such as a waterfall, a river and even the African veldt. All of it is sumptuously illuminated by Donald Holder’s lighting design, which features a shimmering sun as well as a night sky filled with sparkling stars. Garth Fagan’s choreography is effervescent and vibrant throughout, inspired by the infectious mingling of African rhythms and South African music with American pop styles. The show’s enchanting music is an intricate collaboration fusing the primary compositions of Elton John with the lyrics of Tim Rice and enhanced by its contributions. It blends several songs from the 1994 movie with tunes written specifically for the musical. Fine singing accentuates the production as well, led by the glorious pipes of Mukelisiwe Goba on the packed media night as Rafiki; she led the introductory “Circle of Life” number as puppeteers in animal costumes cascaded down the aisles of The Fox onto the stage before wide-eyed children and their adult counterparts. The Lion King takes a serviceable story and elevates it to superior art with the fastidious, meticulous direction and dedication by Taymor and her immensely talented colleagues, a visual and auditory feast for the senses. lthough South Africa hasn’t drawn much praise from the international wine media, the nation has a long winemaking history, dating from the 17th century. South Africa has suffered several challenges, though, when selling good wine. First, an 1886 insect infestation of

phylloxera diseased and destroyed many vineyards, and subsequently, an ongoing glut of wine caused considerable quantities of it to be destroyed. Not until the late 1980s did South Africa’s export market start to open. After apartheid’s fall, the longstanding wine cooperative KWV changed; the wine industry privatized in order to make quality wines, with a monumental shift from producing grapes for distilling liquors like brandy (70 percent of the crop) to making vintages for the international wine market. A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines originate on 28 hectares in the Swartland appellation, north of Cape Town. The fathers of cousins Adi and Hein Badenhorst both worked as farmers at the famed Klein Constantia winery, with the cousins later taking over the neglected cellar on the Kalmoesfontein farm, where the vineyards are situated. In 2008, the cousins bought 60 hectares to form A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines, with the goals of making vintages

using traditional methods and practicing biological farming for natural wines. The company’s vineyards mostly sport old bush vines, not trellised, that were planted in the 1950s and ’60s to produce chenin blanc, Cinsault and grenache. The vineyard’s soil ranges from granite to clay and shale. Secateurs ranks as Badenhorst’s second-tier wine, which the cousins make in a red blend, a rosé and a chenin blanc. It is thought, incidentally, that chenin blanc (also known as steen and nowadays one of the most cultivated and popular grape varietals) was originally planted in South Africa in 1685 by fleeing Huguenots. Food Pairings: Secateurs pairs nicely with chicken, salad and fish and holds up to cream sauces. It also pairs well with charcuterie and pâté. Certified Sommelier Stanley Browne owns Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves and Downtown at the MX, as well as Snax Gastrobar in Lindenwood Park.

rom classic to organic to whimsical, Cheree Berry Paper is celebrating 10 years of designing custom stationery for all of life’s most memorable occasions. St. Louis-area native Cheree Berry, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design from Washington University in St. Louis, worked as a designer and art director for Kate Spade New York before launching her own paper company in her hometown in 2007. “I fell in love with designing paper and realized I could actually get paid to do this,” Berry says. Through the years, Cheree Berry Paper has evolved from a custom wedding-invitation business to a company offering traditional-to-playful stationery for every occasion, including weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, nonprofit galas and corporate events. “Our signature style is classic – with a twist,” Berry says. The one-woman operation has grown to a staff of 22, including seven experienced graphic designers and illustrators who take inspiration from their clients to create stationery as unique as they are. “We call ourselves ‘occasion queens,’” Berry says. “There is no occasion we haven’t tackled.” Today, Cheree Berry Paper can be found not only on chereeberrypaper.com but also in Target stores across the nation. Berry connected with a Target buyer two years ago, and after several successful design meetings in Minneapolis, the retail chain selected the locally based paper company to be one of the faces of a chic new stationery section. The collection features both wedding and baby stationery. “We call them ‘light do-ityourself,’ so you buy a design and fill in the facts of the party,” Berry explains. “And we still try to make them feel as custom and personalized as possible, so people know they are opening something that’s unique.”

The wedding lines feature save-the-date cards, thankyou notes and be-my-bridesmaid invitations, as well as cocktail napkins and paper chargers for ancillary wedding events, all designed with modern brides and grooms in mind. The baby lines include baby announcements and baby-shower invitations, such as the Swaddle Soiree design, featuring a baby-shaped card with a blanket opening to the event details. “Maybe a mom is having her second baby, and she doesn’t want to go custom because she’s busy and being more frugal,” Berry says. “These are great for showers because there are just 10 to 25 cards, and the formats are really unexpected.” The designs stay in line with Cheree Berry Paper, as they showcase its signature typography and clever copywriting on every card, as well as chic gold-foil accents. Although Cheree Berry Paper has expanded to offthe-shelf stationery, the heart of its business remains custom invitations. The company recently unveiled 40 new customizable wedding-invitation designs on its website and continues to work closely with couples who would like the stationery for their big day to be personalized from start to finish. The most popular customizable designs, which can be altered using the website’s libraries of fonts, color schemes, themes, inks and envelopes, include Fit for a Queen, featuring a royal vibe for the classic bride; Wood You Marry Me, with an organic feel for the outdoorsy couple; and Rose Water, a Gothic, romantic theme for the edgier bride. Berry says the designs run the gamut of tastes, from the classic bride who wants to pull out the invitation in 10 years and still love it, to the “unique” bride who desires an invitation that stands out from the crowd. When a bride and groom opt to design a custom wedding invitation, Berry selects the designer with the aesthetic most fitting for the couple. “We ask

[the couple] a ton of questions to make the design as personalized as possible, from how they met to their engagement story and why they chose their wedding location,” Berry says, adding that the couple is presented with two or three design options to choose from, and several rounds of revisions are made to perfect the stationery. “We want the design to be a visual representation of that couple.” Cheree Berry Paper has designed wedding, baby and special-event stationery for everyone and everything from St. Louis couples, corporations, charities and medical centers, such as St. Louis Children’s Hospital, to high-profile clients, including former first daughters Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager, Girls actress Allison Williams, Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper. “We’re working with people at such an emotional time, so it’s so neat when you reveal the invitation, and they say, ‘It’s amazing!’” Berry says. “That’s what keeps us running and ticking.” This summer, the company will release another new collection – a whimsical line of everyday stationery, from birthday cards to thank-you notes, slated for smaller lifestyle chain stores and local boutiques. “We’re also working on some exciting new collaborations, such as a playful design for baby-moccasin company Chérubin,” Berry says. “We plan to stay primarily in paper and maybe some home goods.” Whatever the project, Cheree Berry’s signature style – classic, with a twist – is sure to mark every paper product. here’s no better place to get a taste of spring than at Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria in Rock Hill. With a revamped spring menu and rebuilt patio, the restaurant is sure to check all the boxes. Katie Collier, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Ted Collier, says this spring has been all about innovation and experimenting with new tastes and ingredients. Though some favorites like the eggplant-parmigiana small plate are back, the Katie’s team has added plenty of new options like a cucumber crostini, a prawn-and-avocado salad and a housemade torchio pasta. “We added about 25 new menu options,” Collier says. “We were very inspired by seasonal ingredients, but we were also looking to incorporate some South American ingredients and use them with Italian methods of cooking.” Collier says the restaurant has a few “really incredible” chefs from South America in the kitchen,

and she was interested in incorporating more of their style of cooking into the restaurant’s menu. The patio has become such a highlight for Katie’s visitors in the warm months that the team actually had to rebuild and rework it to create more space. “We got rid of the picnic tables so we could seat more people and reconfigured the garden,” Collier says. The garden now surrounds the perimeter of two garden tables. Visitors who sit at these tables are literally inside the garden and are surrounded by all the vegetables and herbs that are growing there. Local craftsman Martin Goebel built the two tables, which are full slabs of oak tree with live edges. She also notes that the outside area now features more nights of music, and visitors can enjoy live tunes five nights a week. New to the patio area is an outdoor bar, where visitors can enjoy the revamped cocktail menu. This season’s drink menu includes a wide range of freshpressed juices and a variety of herbs. include a grapefruit-and-rosemary paloma, the basilmash margarita and a cucumber-dill mule, along with favorites like The Famous Watermelon. “They’re great to enjoy by the glass or in a pitcher on the patio with friends,” Collier notes. For those who prefer to take the Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria experience home to their own kitchens, the Colliers are launching a meal kit company called VERO Pizza & Pasta, coming in June. “We’ll have recipe cards that are interactive, so you can have fun making [the recipes] with family and friends,” Collier says. “It’s all about the interaction of cooking and reconnecting with people.” In addition, the Colliers are working on a new restaurant at 14173 Clayton Road, which is expected to open in early July.
