CONTENTS SOCIETY EVER WONDER WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR ST. LOUISANS BACK IN THE day? A new Missouri History Museum exhibition, A Walk in 1875 St. Louis, succeeds in addressing the question on so many levels. The exhibit is based on Compton & Dry’s remarkably detailed 19th-century map, Pictorial St. Louis, which is comprised of 110 separate plates that show every house, building, street and tree in each of the city’s nine established neighborhoods. “No map in the history of mankind was more accurate,” the museum’s public historian, Andrew Wanko, tells me. Indeed, the map—and the exhibit, as a whole—transports modern-day St. Louisans back to that era, to a time when the headlines involved the Whiskey Ring scandal and ‘the great divorce’ between St. Louis City and County. It also was the year when baseball began here; and the first African-American high school west of the Mississippi, Sumner High School, was founded. While there are stark differences between now and then, you’ll see that some of the challenges the city faced 140 years ago still reverberate today. What’s that about history repeating, you say?

My favorite pet is my puggle, Pebbles. She watches the TODAY Show in the morning until Kathie Lee and Hoda come on. Then, she gets up and goes outside. I respect that.
Brittany Nay My first pet was a dog named Lassie. She was a quirky German Shepherd—not at all like Timmy’s intelligent Collie on the TV show—but we loved her just the same.

DADA BALL & BASH
T
BY DIANE ANDERSON
H E C O N T E M P O R A RY A R T Museum St. Louis hosted the sixth edition of its ever-popular, funfilled Dada Ball & Bash. Inspired by the Dadaists of the early 20th century, this legacy event celebrated the unexpected, ironic and playful at the Koken Art Factory. Some of the highlights included an avant-garde dinner by the renowned Moto Restaurant team that featured an edible menu, 3-D sushi and carbonated grapes. Pioneering Dadaist, the late Marcel Duchamp, ‘served’ as honorary chair.
DIANE’S SCOOP Regional Arts Commission’s Roseann Weiss says they are excited to have Felicia Shaw start her new post as the organization’s executive director. So far, we hear she’s fabulous!... Nancy Kranzberg can’t say enough about The Dark Room Wine Bar and Photo Gallery in Grand Center, which has free live music, Tuesday through Saturday. Apparently, it’s the place to be!... Philip Slein is jetting off to London to represent Rex Sinquefield’s Regionalists painting collection. Slein is attending Olympia Art Fair, the oldest one of its kind...Gilberto Pinela (one of LN’s Most Stylish) is gearing up to work on a film with Table Sixteen Productions...The Urban League’s Michael McMillan is excited to be breaking ground next month on their new jobs center in Ferguson...Nancy and Craig Schnuck just returned from Los Angeles, where they had a wonderful visit with daughters Libby and Alexa.

HERE WERE VULCANS, Stormtroopers and aliens galore at this year’s space-themed A Tasteful Affair benefit for Food Outreach at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. More than two dozen live cooking stations from local restaurants, caterers and vendors enticed guests, as well as hundreds of silent and live auction items. The event is Food Outreach’s largest annual fundraiser, helping provide an average of 1,800 meals a day to St. Louisans affected by HIV/AIDS and cancer.

A detail of the Eads Bridge from Pictorial St. Louis
he MISSOURI HISTORY MUSEUM is bringing St. Louis’ Gilded T Age back to life in its new exhibition, A Walk in 1875 St. Louis. The exhibit was conceived using a completely detailed map by Compton & Dry as a backdrop. The map, Pictorial St. Louis, was the largest of its kind when it was created in 1875, requiring 300 square feet of space to lay out. In addition to wall-sized images of the map, A Walk in 1875 also features a glimpse into the everyday life of St. Louisans of that era, from wealthy and middle-class households to destitute life and local scandals, as well as artifacts culled mostly from the museum’s collection. The free exhibit runs through Feb. 14.
Jazz favorites CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE, CYRUS CHESTNUT and St. Louis’ own DAVID SANBORN are among the highlights of JAZZ ST. LOUIS’ 2015-2016 season. It’s the 20th year for the organization, which kicks off its new subscription series Sept. 23 with Jazz St. Louis @ 20, a concert featuring a ‘super group’ that includes McBride and Chestnut, as well as GREGORY HUTCHINSON, RUSSELL MALONE, TERELL STAFFORD and TIM WARFIELD. Other performances include Sanborn, the YELLOWJACKETS, and DAVE HOLLAND PRISM TRIO, among others. Subscription packages currently are available; individual tickets go on sale Aug. 19.
OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS has announced the lineup for its 2016 festival season, which opens next May with Giacomo Puccini’s popular La bohème. Richard Strauss’ comedy, Ariadne on Naxos, Giuseppi Verdi’s masterwork Macbeth, and the premier of Jack Perla’s and Rajiv Joseph’s Shalimar the Clown (from the Salman Rushdie novel) complete the lineup. Subscription tickets for 2016 are now available.

LIV ING VILLA DUCHESNE AND OAK HILL SCHOOL
Ready for What’s Next BY LISA WATSON
T
HERESE HAGEMEISTER IS THE DIRECTOR of enrollment management at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, but her commitment to the school goes beyond your typical job: She’s also an alum and her own daughters are current students. “The foundation I received here really catapulted me forward,” Hagemeister says. “I’ve had different careers, and I think my education encouraged me to learn more deeply and focus on skills, not just content; so that as I moved out into the world, I had the skills to be flexible and adaptable. That’s something I think is even more relevant in the 21st century than it was when I graduated.” That education, focused on critical thinking, also instilled a moral compass, Hagemeister says. “I left here knowing that it was my purpose in life to help other people and to make the world a better place...When my husband and I had children,
I knew I wanted them to have a Sacred Heart education.” Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School—which offers co-ed programs starting at age 3 and allgirls education in middle and high school—has a reputation for its beautiful campus and top-level faculty, but the facilities aren’t what makes it special, Hagemeister says. “What the kids have said makes the experience special is the deep relationship they develop with their teachers. They’re dealing with a very rigorous curriculum, and they are pushed by their teachers, but feel very supported simultaneously.” That give-and-take relationship is a function of the Five Goals of Sacred Heart Education, Hagemeister says. “The goals call us to teach all facets of human development, preparing them not Continued on page 81

THE RYAN TRADITION
Continuing the Legacy BY ROBYN DEXTER
F
OR 50 YEARS, THE RYAN TRADITION HAS specialized in previewing properties in St. Louis’ luxury communities, including Clayton, Ladue, Frontenac, Huntleigh, and Town and Country. Anne Ryan started in the real-estate business in 1965 at the insistence of Ira E. Berry, whose Ira E. Berry, Inc. is now a part of Coldwell Banker. In 1979, she founded the Fine Properties Division of Ira E. Berry in the Ladue office and dedicated her time to real estate listing and selling in 1990. Her son John joined her in creating The Ryan Tradition in 1991, and he brought 15 years of commercial real estate business, having been in business since 1978. Along with partners Aimee Simpson and Mary Gentsch, John Ryan has continued the legacy of The Ryan Tradition. He calls this 50-year milestone “significant,” and says it is a testimony to the upper-tier market they’ve been serving for all these years. Over the last 22 years, The Ryan Tradition has sold more than $850 million of St. Louis’ real estate. “Knowledge, service and experience make

the company what it is today,” Ryan notes, adding that The Ryan Tradition also leads with highestpriced sales, highest-average sale price and highest sales volume. The real-estate market is still recovering from its downfall a few years back, but Ryan is optimistic. “The market has really been trying for the last five or six years,” he says. “We’re seeing it stabilizing and starting to grow with increasing values, but we’re still behind other cities and other major metro areas.” Currently in Ladue, The Ryan Tradition is presenting a beautiful five-bedroom home at 800 Barnes Road. “It’s a classic Ladue property that’s been beautifully updated,” he says. “It’s located on the St. Louis Country Club grounds and is definitely architecturally significant.” The home also features a front-entry Palladium window, French doors, custom casework with multiple bay windows and an elegant spiral staircase, as well as a two-bedroom guest house. The property is just one example of what The
Ryan Tradition has built its success on, and Ryan has high hopes for the future. “We’re proud of the continuing legacy of The Ryan Tradition,” he says. “We’ve been serving the community for all this time and we’re proud of it.”

What’s something many people don’t know about you? A lot of people don’t know that I modeled for a national Walmart campaign, and that I have been a shoe model! What advice do you have for people trying to sell a home? Make sure the house looks clean and not cluttered. Good curb appeal, fresh coats

KIM CARNEY COLDWELL BANKER PREMIER GROUP
How did you begin working in real estate? I was looking for a house for myself and my fiance at the time. I loved the process, and I realized that I could do a much better job than my current agent did; so once I met with my broker, I started right up and didn’t look back. What’s a typical weekend for you like? In this spring market, weekends are crazy, between open houses, people wanting to see my listings, and buyers wanting to see houses. Usually, I have a pretty good work/life balance, but not during the spring market! We do have a pool and we opened it early. So when I’m not working, we’re out by the pool a lot and we love hanging out in the neighborhood. What are some of your favorite spots around St. Louis? I live so close to Clayton, in Ladue, and we walk to Clayton a lot for the restaurants. Cafe Napoli is one of my favorites, and so is Ruth’s Chris. The kids and I also frequent the Original Pancake House and Five Star Burgers. The area is
very walkable—you couldn’t ask for a better location, with the restaurants, Shaw Park and the bike trail. What’s something many people don’t know about you? I am a stage 3C cancer survivor. I’m completely recovered and feeling great, and now I do a CrossFit-type workout five days a week, called Iron Tribe. I’m now giving 10 percent of my commissions to Siteman Cancer Center, because they saved my life, really. What advice do you have for people trying to buy a home? Definitely interview realtors who specialize in the area. The realtor you choose is key to a smooth and successful transaction. By hiring the correct realtor, you can save money and make things go smoothly. Buying a house is a difficult transaction without hiring an experienced realtor—being a good negotiator doesn’t hurt, either.

I discovered that I loved it, and have been doing it ever since! What do you do outside of work? I’m dying to see the Lantern Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and I do a lot of exercising—walking, running and different types of classes. I also like to visit restaurants in different areas of town; Mia Sorella is one of my favorites. What’s your favorite St. Louis neighborhood? There are so many that I love that it’s hard to narrow them down! I was born and raised in the Richmond Heights/Clayton area, but I’m getting married this year and I’ll be moving to Ballwin—and I think they’re both great areas. What advice do you have for people trying to buy a home? Work with an agent they know they can trust, and to listen to them. How did you begin working in real estate? I began in real estate—after having been in journalism—when I was going to sell my own home, in the late-’90s. What’s a typical weekend for you like? I work every weekend, because I have buyers and sellers from all price ranges, up to a $10-million listing; however, I make sure I get in a bike ride, yoga, and time with good friends and family. What’s your favorite St. Louis neighborhood? There are so many wonderful neighborhoods in St. Louis; I couldn’t choose a favorite. Friends and clients are living all over this city and enjoying great quality of life: Tower
Kirkwood train station
Grove, Lafayette Square, the Central West End, Kirkwood, Webster, Ladue Schools’ neighborhoods and Clayton! What’s something many people don’t know about you? I am fascinated by how people all over the planet live, and survive challenges: from the Sherpa culture (who helped us survive climbing to Base Camp of Everest), to Southern Sudanese people struggling with so many issues (whom our family has formed lifelong relationships with), and crazy research scientists I spent time with
who are a bit wacko, living in Antarctica. Many, many blessed journeys, too many to share. What advice do you have for people looking to sell a home? Sellers need to clean out every closet, nook and cranny, and freshen up their home to the best of their ability, so that buyers can imagine themselves living in the space. I have heard it said, If you wouldn’t see it in a new display home, don’t have it out in yours! Continued on page 34

Who’s Who in Real Estate? A Ladue News Special Section Continued from page 32
KATHY HOLMAN
DIELMANN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY How did you begin in real estate? I come from a real-estate family. Previously, I was the director of community relations for Clayton School District, and I was going to be retiring from that position. A couple of my friends were in real estate at the time, and my friend said, You know so many people, you really should do this. So that’s what I did, and I’ve loved it. I moved over in 2000, so it will be 15 years this fall. What do you do outside of work? I love to be with my grandchildren, family and friends. I read, needlepoint and love to travel. I also do volunteer work with Special Education Foundation. What’s your favorite St. Louis neighborhood? We just moved from Lake Forest, where my children went to Clayton Schools, to the Willows neighborhood off Bopp Road. Lake Forest is just a wonderful family neighborhood and we loved
living here. We downsized but I love it here, too: We’ve gone from perfect to perfect, depending on our lifestyle needs. What’s something many people don’t know about you? I was the first woman president of the Clayton Rotary Club, and president of the Missouri School Public Relations Association (MOSPRA). I think the Rotary Club is so philanthropic and does so much for the community, and it’s wonderful networking for business people. We had wonderful programs and I made some lifelong friends. What advice do you have for people trying to sell a home? Work with a knowledgeable, respected agent in a good firm that has good networking, and listen to the realtor. When we put our house on the market, we painted the first floor a neutral color and got it in great shape. That’s what you have to do—many times, people don’t want to put in the effort or spend the money, and in my opinion that’s penny-wise, pound foolish.

JANET MCAFEE REAL ESTATE
and wanted a job that offered more of a sense of commun i ty, a n d n o t a s much travel. What’s a typical weekend for you l i ke? There truly is never a typical weekend, but I am learning to take advantage of any downtime I can find. You never know when you will get it again. What are some of your favorite spots around St. Louis? We like to try local restaurants. There is so much culinary talent here. Of course, Truffles is great because it is close to our home and the food is always great! What’s something many people don’t know about you? That I grew up in the same house that my father was born in. What advice do you have for people trying to buy a home? Get professional assistance. Unfortunately, all information is not accurate information. So, it is imperative to only deal in the true facts so you can make your best decisions.

HELEN REID COLDWELL BANKER GUNDAKER
How did you begin in real estate? I started as a real-estate agent part-time in 1988. After one year, I quit my job at Monsanto and went full-time in real estate because it was so exciting to me. I am a rather high-energy person, and this business is a great fit. What’s your favorite St. Louis neighborhood? There are so many great neighborhoods in the St. Louis area that picking a ‘favorite’ is nearly impossible, and I list and sell just about everywhere in the metro area. I live off McKnight Road between Clayton Road and Highway 40. We love the convenience and the people who live in the area are wonderful. What’s something many people don’t know about you? I’m an early-riser and often start my day tending to the plantings and flower beds in our yard. I also totally enjoy getting a bushel of veggies at the local farmer’s market and doing home-canning; it seems relaxing to me. What advice do you have for people looking to buy a home? My advice for people
Etty presents:
looking to buy a home today is to be prepared to pounce on one they like. That means get preapproved for any financing, including a bridge loan if the current home is to be sold. Our area has the lowest number of homes for sale that I can ever remember, and good homes, well priced, just seem to sell instantly—often with multiple offers.
ALISON SCHNEIDER LAURA MCCARTHY REALTORS
How did you begin working i n r e a l e s t a t e? Having moved state-to-state nine times in my life (both as a child and as an adult) and having owned seven houses with my husband, real estate seemed like a natural fit when I decided to go back to work after staying home with my children for 15 years. Before having children, I worked for Andersen Consulting (now called Accenture) and Washington University. Both of those experiences entailed building relationships, managing and organizing large-scale projects and events, and working long hours.

One name, one commitment - to get results, call Etty.
What do you do outside of work? My husband Michael and I have three sons (11, 14 and 17 years old), so most of my time outside of work is spent with my family. My boys play soccer, tennis, and baseball, so you can usually find me at some sort of sporting event on the weekends. As for myself, I love playing tennis, taking long walks, hunting for bargains at second-hand furniture stores, and reading great books. My husband would say I also have a slight addiction to home design magazines and websites. What’s your favorite St. Louis neighborhood? I have to say I’m partial to Claverach Park in Clayton since I live there! However, I love all of the older, established neighborhoods in St. Louis and its close-in suburbs. I’m partial to neighborhoods with sidewalks and streetlights, lots of kids playing outside, and shops and restaurants within walking distance. What advice do you have for people trying to buy a home? Smart buyers know what they are looking for in a new home (a bigger kitchen, perhaps, or a fantastic back yard for the dogs or kids), but also know that there is no such thing as a perfect house. Make a list of all your desires and prioritize them. I know first-hand from when I lived in New Hampshire that having the ‘perfect’ house won’t make you happy if it’s not in the right neighborhood. You might have to give up the perfect garage in order to gain the perfect neighborhood!

Raye Zeigler and Judy Miller, Janet McAfee Real Estate Former owner, Cardinals great Chris Carpenter, had this coveted 10,800-square-foot manse meticulously remodeled inside and out. Outstanding craftsmanship marks each corner of every room, from exquisite walnut and mahogany flooring and triple-crown moldings to beautiful dovetailing—even in the oversized his-and-her closets. Deluxe amenities also abound, including a gym, putting green, theater, wine cellar and master suite, with a walkout to a pool and outdoor living space, complete with a barbecue and fireplace, all on a richly landscaped acre of land tucked into a private, wooded cul de sac. The remarkable estate’s luxurious layout and phenomenal attention to detail sold the home for $3 million, Zeigler notes.
Suzie Wells, Gladys Manion Real Estate This French Country home is nestled in an exclusive neighborhood near Longview Farm Park. Residents are in the lap of luxury in the Dick Buschdesigned manse, constructed of the finest woods and stones. An expansive great room, along with the classic French Country kitchen and hearth room, make it ideal for entertaining. And the gorgeous master suite, with a spa bath, jet tub, limestone shower and his-and-her walk-in closets, provides a relaxing retreat. Special features, from soaring ceilings and arches, to an elevator and porte-cochere, complete this masterpiece that sold for $2.3 million, Wells says.

Highlights of the home also include a beautiful library with built-in bookcases, formal living and dining rooms with fireplaces, a kitchen with a butler’s pantry, spacious bedroom suites and an oversized screened porch. A two-story, columned balcony overlooks the expansive grounds, complete with a tiered brick terrace surrounding the pool, pool house, tennis courts and a gazebo.
John Ryan and Mary Gentsch, The Ryan Tradition, Coldwell Banker Gundaker Ladue This impressive equestrian estate on 4.1 acres sold in May for $2.5 million. The 8,000-square-foot manse features an upscale kitchen and main-floor master suite, as well as gorgeous views from French doors, bay windows and skylights. And there’s plenty of play space on the property, with a sparkling pool and tennis court— all enveloped in woods for added beauty and privacy.

Nibble on lunch from the terrace, with fireplace, that overlooks the tempting pool and grounds. Relax in the multifunctional great room with its soaring ceilings, re-energize in the exercise room, or play a jovial game of squash on the indoor court. Then, test your culinary skills in the expertly designed kitchen, complete with gorgeous marble countertops and premium appliances, by making a feast for the family. To round out your day, uncork a bottle from your personal wine cellar, and settle down in the media room to catch a movie with the people you love.

Ready for the Show
The Arthur Sachs Mansion
I
BY ALAN BRAINERD
T ALL BEGAN IN 1973. THE VERY FIRST KIPS Bay Decorator Show House premiered to benefit the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, which is marking its 100th anniversary as an organization this year. The Show House has raised more than $18 million since its inception, with the funds helping some 10,000 at-risk youngsters from all backgrounds. The attendance has grown since the ’70s to tens of thousands of visitors, all wanting to see the creative talents of some of the most gifted interior designers working today. This year is no exception, with 22 participating design firms, and designer Bunny Williams as the 2015 design chair. Each firm was hand-selected by the committee to bring its touch to what is known as the Arthur Sachs Mansion, a 9,600-squarefoot townhouse at 58 East 66th St. in New York City. The Beaux Arts mansion, designed by the firm of Buchman & Fox, has been transformed into a virtual world tour of fabrics, furnishings and lighting. Each designer took his or her inspiration from different elements to create one-of-a-kind spaces. Continued on page 50

A $100,000 chandelier is the crowning glory of Pavarini Design’s lounge area.
One of Clive Christian’s showpieces for the man of the house
Continued from page 49 Remember a true designer show house should not flow, but offer a very different experience from room to room. For example, the living room designed by Mark D. Sikes Inc. was inspired by the 1950s European socialite Marella Agnelli—a wild mixture of pattern and scale all done in red. It also could be attributed to Diana Vreeland’s living room, which her decorator Billy Baldwin called her “garden in hell.” Extravagance knows no boundaries in this Show 50

House. Just take a look at Pavarini Design’s rather sultry lounge that is crowned with a $100,000 chandelier. Designers often use their own personal items in a Show House. Philip Mitchell Design executed the three-floor stair gallery. With artwork comprising of photography, paintings and other media,
95 percent of the pieces belong to the designer. Clive Christian, known for its upscale cabinetry, painstakingly designed the master suite closets with a nod back to grander times. The property is on the market for $35 million, if you happen to be looking to relocate. kipsbaydecoratorsshowhouse.org.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis
A Home for Second Chances
T
By Robyn Dexter
he streets of any city can be treacherous for our four-legged friends if they don’t have anyone to look after them. Luckily, many once-homeless pooches have found a friend, hero and rescuer in Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Grim has built a phenomenal network of animal lovers who are dedicated to making St. Louis a more compassionate city through Stray Rescue. One of these efforts is an event called Urban Wanderers – Faces of Survival, which features artwork from more than 60 artists from all over the country. “They take one of our rescue dogs, and whatever their medium is as an artist, they turn the image of the dog into art,” Grim says. “There’s so much excitement around it.” Faces of Survival is a six-week show at Gallery 400 Event Space at 400 Washington Ave. At the end of the six-week run, the art is auctioned off, and all proceeds go directly to helping St. Louis’
four-legged friends. This year’s event runs from July 10 to Aug. 2, and begins and ends with a party. Shep, Stray Rescue’s 2014 miracle dog, who is featured in this year’s show, has overcome being shot in the back, being paralyzed and sodomized. “Shep is a true inspiration,” Grim says. “Even when the vet said to put him down, I wanted to give him a chance. Now, he can run and has been adopted.” Grim says Stray Rescue of St. Louis is truly unique because “we’re really in the trenches. We don’t put dogs down just because they were shot, burned or mutilated,” he says. “We heal the dog – mind, body and soul.” Grim works daily with police, city employees and Mayor Slay’s Animal Cruelty Task Force. “We’re working in the toughest parts of the city, but we’re able to save more than 3,000 dogs a year,” he says. Grim sees cases of unspeakable cruelty, but also success stories, full of hope. One such dog is Diseno, who has been undergoing intensive care. “When we got the call, she

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT
Animal Health Foundation BY AMANDA DAHL
PHOTOS BY SARAH CONARD
MISSION: An animal that humans have relied heavily upon through the ages—the horse—is in desperate need of help. These noble creatures face a deadly disease that inflames their hooves, known as laminitis, which leads to severe pain and may require euthanasia. One organization in St. Louis has taken on the difficult challenge to find a cure: the Animal Health Foundation. This nonprofit organization funds research initiatives for prevention methods, and ultimately, to find a cure for the crippling disease. HISTORY: Dr. Donald (Don) Walsh returned to the St. Louis area, where he was raised on a farm and showed American Saddlebreds each summer, following his graduation from veterinary school. He eventually opened his own practice—now known as Homestead Veterinary Hospital—and created the Animal Health Foundation to change the tide for treatment of the incapacitating laminitis. He handed the foundation’s reins over to Dr. Mark Cassells, a veterinarian he welcomed to Homestead, who is now VP of the nonprofit organization. Together, the money raised for the foundation has directly impacted some of the biggest breakthroughs in research on laminitis. COMMUNITY IMPACT: “Our organization has

funded major research that has discovered insulin to be a pivotal factor in [the development] of laminitis,” says Mark Cassells, who describes the process as similar to human diabetes. Australian researchers, Drs. Melody de Laat and Chris Pollitt, recognized a receptor that binds with insulin, instead of aiding to deliver much-needed glucose to the equine foot. This momentous discovery provides an understanding of how laminitis occurs, and therefore makes it easier to develop prevention methods. “We give every dime to research. We may not have raised as much money as we hope to yet, but it all goes to influential research studies,” explains Cassells. Since the foundation has no paid employees, all administrative costs come out of the pockets of those on the board of directors. Donations directly fund prominent researchers like de Laat and Pollitt. Thousands of horses have
WHAT/WHEN/WHERE:
ON THE BOARD: Katy Cassells Katy Cassells, event co-chair for the upcoming 30th Anniversary Celebration, wants people to understand that they don’t have to own a horse or ride one to see how truly devastating laminitis can be. “I think people would be surprised to know how many of our national treasures have been killed by this, including Secretariat and Barbaro,” Katy Cassells says. An equestrian herself, Cassells breeds and competes show jumpers. Her future became intertwined with the foundation when she met and married Dr. Mark Cassells. “It’s like fate...kismet,” she says, adding she knew founder Dr. Walsh as a little girl, and upon returning from her pre-veterinary studies, came back to the clinic once more. “He had hired a vet who also had recently returned to St. Louis. [I first met Mark] in the horse stables.”
Cassells firmly believes that “a community that is good to animals is a kinder community.” She hopes to recognize the foundation that means so much to her with a grand event people are sure to remember. Between a silent auction, dinner and live entertainment, including jazz singer Denise Thimes, she promises to make attendees “feel like they are going out for a night on the town!” The idea behind the event is to make these elegant animals accessible to all, so that people will understand the horses’ plight and how they can help. “For anybody who isn’t familiar with horses, [I encourage you to] take time out to see the Clydesdales at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery or Grant’s Farm. Go pet a horse—look at them—and see how truly gentle these giants are, and you’ll want to help them.” Cassells graduated from MICDS, and studied preveterinary medicine at Colorado State University.

LIV ING UV EYE EXPOSURE
Protect Those Peepers BY CONNIE MITCHELL
Y
OU’VE HEARD ALL THE WARNINGS about skin cancer, so you slather sunscreen on every inch of exposed skin. Good for you! But before you head into the summer sun, don’t forget to protect another important part of your body: your eyes. “UV light can damage different parts of the eye as they absorb these potentially harmful wavelengths of light,” says Dr. Janae Kadlec, an optometrist with Eye Care Associates of St. Louis. “The white part of the eye (conjunctiva) can develop yellowish elevations called pinguecula and pterygium, which occur more frequently in folks with outdoor occupations or hobbies.” Cataracts, a gradual clouding of the lens, can occur earlier in those who have been exposed to more UV light, Kadlec explains. “However, there are many other factors that can influence the formation of lens opacities. And the back of the eye, called the retina, can be negatively impacted by UV light. It’s one of the risk factors for developing macular degeneration.” Skin cancer of the
eyelids or delicate skin around the eye and corneal burns are other potential problems. Plopping a wide-brimmed hat on your head can help, but it doesn’t block reflected light. “We all know how light and UV rays bounce off of water and snow, but it also reflects off of other surfaces like cement, grass, cars and, to some extent, any surface,” says Dr. James Rieger, an optometrist with Pepose Vision Institute. “The best protection is a cap and sunglasses.” When choosing sunglasses, look for a pair with large frames that provide ample coverage, Kadlec says. “A frame that wraps around the face to some degree, can help to block UV light from the sides. A good optician can help to determine whether a person’s prescription would work well with this feature,” she adds. “For people who spend a considerable amount of time around water or those who have difficulty with glare, polarized lenses are a wonderful option. This lens blocks light reflected off of surfaces, providing superior comfort to the wearer.”
A convenient option may be Transitions lenses, which darken when exposed to direct sunlight, and lighten again when the wearer goes back indoors. These lenses prevent the need for switching from indoor glasses to sunglasses. “Unfortunately, they do not get very dark behind the windshield of a car,” Kadlec says. This is because the windshield blocks most of the UV light, which is required to activate the molecules inside the lenses that allow them to darken. “It seems that the cumulative amount of UV exposure acquired before the age of 18 may be the most concerning,” Kadlec adds. “So if parents can get their kids in the habit of protecting their eyes at a young age, it would be highly beneficial long-term.”

HEALTH & WELLNESS THE CANCER RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM
Hope on the Horizon
T
HE MISSOURI CURES EDUCATION Foundation recently gathered cancer researchers and experts for The Cancer Research Symposium, where they presented some of the field’s most exciting innovations that may lead to breakthroughs in cancer treatment. Ladue News spoke with two participants from last month’s symposium: Dena Ladd, executive director of Missouri Cures; and Dr. Lukas Wartman, assistant professor of oncology at Washington University School of Medicine and assistant director of Cancer Genomics at the university’s Genome Institute. Ladue News (LN): What was the purpose of the Cancer Research Symposium, and how did the idea for this event develop? Dena Ladd (DL): The mission of the Missouri Cures Education Foundation is to protect and promote all medical research in the state. This gives people the opportunity to hear about the cutting-edge research taking place in areas such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and other fields. I travel around the state and meet with researchers. I found that the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City had some amazing developments in the cancer research field, as does the Siteman Cancer Center and University of Missouri. I thought, Let’s bring the researchers together for a symposium to highlight the great work being done all around the state. LN: What goals did you hope to achieve through this event? DL: We wanted to give the general public a chance to learn about the latest cutting-edge research that is being used to treat cancer and to better understand what these breakthroughs can mean for individuals or their loved ones dealing with cancer. The members of the audience also had a chance to meet the researchers and ask questions. LN: What were some of the new high-tech ideas presented that you found exciting and would like to share with our readers? DL: We learned about high-tech goggles developed at Washington University that help surgeons ‘see’ cancer during surgery. We also heard about viruses that are being engineered at Washington University and the University of Missouri that act as new therapies to treat and prevent cancer in humans and canines. And we heard from Dr. Lukas Wartman, who shared his personal story of dealing with leukemia. Through sequencing his genes, they were able to find his mutation and personalize a treatment specifically for him. LN: Dr. Wartman, you’re a cancer researcher but also someone who experienced a cancer

diagnosis. What was your patient experience like, and how did you find a way to incorporate new technologies into your own treatment? Dr. Lukas Wartman (LW): I was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in 2003, when I was a fourth-year medical student at Washington University. I was treated with conventional chemotherapy, but I relapsed in 2008, during my first year of oncology fellowship. After ‘salvage chemotherapy,’ I entered into a second remission and went on to have a stem cell transplant with my younger brother as the donor. Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital are a leading transplant center, and my doctors and I were confident that the transplant would result in a cure. Unfortunately, I relapsed again in 2011. And despite being treated with strong chemotherapy again, I did not go back into remission. Prior to that relapse, I had joined the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Ley to complete my research training. Dr. Ley and his colleagues at the McDonnell Genome Institute had sequenced the first cancer genome from a patient with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and reported those findings in 2008. At the time of my relapse, Dr. Ley, along with Drs. Elaine Mardis and Richard Wilson, asked if I would be willing to have my genome sequenced. As a physician-scientist, I was interested in learning more about the genomics of my particular type of leukemia, which has a poor outcome in adults. I did not expect the results to directly benefit me. However, an alteration in one gene was identified through the sequencing studies; and as I had relapsed, refractory leukemia with no other options, I started taking a drug that was approved for other types of cancer but was known to be an inhibitor of that particular gene. I promptly entered into remission and went on to have a second stem-cell transplant. I remain in remission now three years later. I still have significant complications related to the second stem cell transplant, but am sure that I would not be alive today without the pioneering
work done here. The sequencing results saved my life. LN: Wow, that’s quite a story! How has your experience since then informed and shaped your continuing work in the field? LW: I continue to work in the field of cancer genomics. I am also a leukemia and stem-cell transplant physician, as well as a leukemia researcher with a laboratory of my own. I am working to try to make clinical cancer sequencing available to more patients who have advanced cancers and lack standard treatment options. There are many obstacles to bringing this new technology into clinical practice, but I remain optimistic that over the next decade, it will have a significant impact. LN: So exactly how do you think these new gene sequencing technologies will change the future of cancer treatment, and how far off is broader use of these technologies? LW: In oncology, we are just at the beginning stages of learning how to incorporate new gene sequencing technologies to improve patient outcomes. We need to perform rigorous clinical trials to demonstrate that using this type of data can truly benefit patients. However, as the cost of sequencing and data analysis are no longer prohibitive, I think that we will firmly establish the utility of these technologies over the next 10 years or so. The challenge remains in our ability to sequence more patients, especially in the setting of clinical trials, in an era of limited research funding. A few researchers at other institutions have recently voiced that they believe the power of genomics to drive personalized medicine has been much hype with little in the way of tangible benefits to people. I would counter that argument with my own, very real story as a testament to the potential that this technology holds. It is not going to be an easy road to make personalized medicine a reality, but a great academic and patient-care institution like ours is poised to do just this type of work. LN: What were the high points of the symposium, and what do you think the public should know based on the information presented? LW: Cancer genomics is just one example of the outstanding research going on in St. Louis. For example, Professor Samuel Achilefu, the director of the Optical Radiology Lab here, also presented an overview of his pioneering work using new imaging technologies to help guide cancer surgeons in removing tumors. Overall, St. Louis has a great research community that will hopefully continue to grow and flourish. However, the older you are the more effect gravity has on your face. It elongates the lower eyelid skin as the heavier check tissue pulls the skin down. This creates an unsightly groove called the tear trough and unmasks puffiness of the lower eyelids. Effective treatment of the lower eyelid involves resuspending the heavy cheek tissue and treating the bulging fat and texture changes of the eyelid skin. The drooping of the upper eyelids is caused by the brows descending, which in turn causes the upper eyelid skin to accumulate in folds at the eyelashes. This has the overall effect of closing in the upper eye and gives that tired or angry look. By restoring the brow to its normal
youthful position, the eye is opened up and a brighter, more youthful look is achieved. Many times the procedure of a brow lift is overlooked and the focus is on the excess skin of the upper eyelid. In reality, elevating the brow will alleviate much of that excess skin and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is not needed. In advanced cases, both the brow and the upper eyelids need to be rejuvenated. It’s a great time to consider cosmetic enhancements. There are many options available to rejuvenate your face and complexion without the use of surgery. If, however, you are interested in more permanent procedures, the newer surgical techniques are less-invasive, require less downtime from your daily activities and offer a faster recovery. Some of these procedures can even be performed in a physician’s office. To address your particular eye concerns, schedule a consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. You’ll learn which treatment is right for your goals.

I look tired and have ‘speed bumps’ under my lower lids. Getting more rest doesn’t seem to help. I like my face, but don’t want to look so worn out. Can I just fix my eyes?
The eyes are the first to betray us as we age. This can occur at an earlier age for those who have an inherited tendency for puffy eyes or sagging brows. When puffiness of the lower eyelids happens at an earlier age, then treatment of the underlying fat or ‘speed bumps’ is sufficient, since the cheek tissue is in its normal youthful position. Sometimes, texture changes in the eye areas can occur in the absence of puffiness. These changes can be treated with retinoid creams, laser rejuvenation and in extreme cases, surgery.

MARKUS GOLDEN
THE GOLDEN TOUCH
I
BY FRANK CUSUMANO
HAVE COVERED A LOT OF WONDERFUL athletes over the years. I am not sure if I have met a better success story than Markus Golden from Affton High School. His accomplishments are pretty amazing: He owns records for tackles on defense and rushing yards on offense. Who gets 16 sacks and scores 16 touchdowns in the same season? Then at Mizzou, despite missing games due to injury, he registers 10 sacks this season and receives All-SEC honors. Golden was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Citrus Bowl for the Tigers. He was rewarded on draft day, going in the second round to the Arizona Cardinals. He has signed a $4-million contract, and he wants to buy his mother a house with the money. There are examples of similar athletic success stories on the field. What is intriguing is what he has accomplished off the field: Golden had maturity issues. At Affton, he was kicked out of school and kicked off the team. He could have gone the way that many do and become another bad statistic. Instead, Golden got serious about life. He grew up. He listened. He behaved. He achieved. The academic hole he put himself in forced him to go to Hutchinson Community College before Mizzou. Academics—not sports—is Markus Golden’s greatest accomplishment. In December, he became the first member of his family to graduate from college. Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel told him that he could change a generation of his family with that degree. It wasn’t easy, but he persevered. That walk across the stage in Columbia was better than
ACADEMICS—NOT SPORTS—IS MARKUS GOLDEN’S GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT. IN DECEMBER, HE BECAME THE FIRST MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE. a sack. We sometimes take college graduations for granted. The Goldens were different. His mother, Rhonda, was in tears. Golden also is one of these guys with an infectious personality. Coaches love to coach him, and teammates love to play with him. He is highenergy and upbeat. He loves life. He loves football. He loves Affton. He loves Mizzou. Describe your life lately. These six months have been a blessing. I just feel the hard work has paid off. Describe Gary Pinkel’s role in your success. He just always pushed, pushed for me to get that degree. He said, I love the way you play football, but that degree comes first. You have to get it. What do you want to accomplish? There is nothing I can’t do. I believe in myself. I believe when I retire I am going to be one of the best to ever play this game.
FIVE THINGS I THINK: 1. The Blues did the right thing. They are a better franchise with a sure-fire Hall-of-Fame coach behind the bench in Ken Hitchcock. Change a few of the players, not the fourth-winningest coach of all time. 2. Hitchcock is the right age to win a championship in St. Louis. Tony La Russa was 62 and 67 when he won. Dick Vermeil was 63. Hitch will be 64 next year when he wins the Stanley Cup. 3. There’s a limo service called Corporate Transportation. They did a nice thing the other day, taking a bunch of kids from Lift For Life Gym in the city for a ride to the Four Seasons Hotel for cooking lessons. And Corporate gave all the kids gift certificates to a sporting goods store.
5. I hope Dave Peacock and Bob Blitz can pull this off. It would be scary to turn into Memphis on a Sunday afternoon in the Fall of 2016. Why couldn’t Shahid Khan be our owner? Imagine one city getting Bidwell and Kroenke. What did we do to deserve that?

Role Play W
ith awards season a distant memory, it’s nice to look forward to a carefree summer of car chases and shootouts at the cineplex. Still, we can’t help but remember the stirring performances through the years that garnered actors like Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr. such acclaim. Surprisingly, not every actor we associate with a role—even an iconic role—was the first choice of the studio. Would it surprise you to know that Hugh Jackman was not the original casting choice for Wolverine? (It was Mission Impossible 2 villain Dougray Scott). Or, that Johnny Depp was at the top of the list of actors to play Ferris Bueller? Most of the time, news of a casting shake-up is met with a nod and a shrug. Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman, but Michelle Pfeiffer took over when Bening got pregnant. Huh. However, there are a few instances in which the replacement actor actually made the movie. (Plus, it’s kind of satisfying when a diva actor passes on a role that makes another actor’s career.) Enjoy... Stars: Tom Hanks Passed: John Travolta Travolta is suitably self-deprecating today when he describes passing on the Oscar-winning role as a “mistake.”
Gladiator Stars: Russell Crowe Passed: Mel Gibson The role of Maximus won Crowe his first Oscar, but the part was Gibson’s before he backed out. That’s OK, though. I think as far as regrets go for Gibson, this is low on the list.
Pretty Woman

Stars: Keanu Reeves Passed: Will Smith Granted, the script for the iconic sciencefiction film may have been hard to visualize. Smith passed because he couldn’t picture the story. He now humbly maintains that Keanu made the movie, and he would not have been good in the part. Interestingly, his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, went on to appear in the film’s sequel.

Stars: Julia Roberts / Richard Gere Passed: Molly Ringwald / Al Pacino Ringwald didn’t like the idea of playing a prostitute, and Pacino had scheduling conflicts. Suffice it to say, it would have been a very different movie, indeed. On a side note, Molly Ringwald also passed on the lead in Ghost that subsequently went to Demi Moore and cemented Moore’s career. Seems like Ringwald should have fired her agent.
- A novel by Peter Nichols surrounding a 60-year mystery between two families
Debbie Baldwin
Sister Act Stars: Whoopi Goldberg Passed: Bette Midler I’m not sure what went wrong, and I love Whoopi Goldberg, but I would have given anything—anything—to see the Divine Miss M play that part. Bette’s people claim they were worried her fans wouldn’t buy her playing a nun. Riiiiiiiiight.
Sex and the City Stars: Sarah Jessica Parker Passed: Dana Delaney The story that spawned the smash HBO hit and two movies wasn’t always meant for Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead role of Carrie Bradshaw. It was only after perennial TV star Dana Delaney passed that Parker took over. In another twist, Cynthia Nixon wasn’t the first one tapped for feisty attorney Miranda Hobbes. Nixon accepted the role after Sandra Bernhard passed. There are two reasons for an actor to beat themselves up over passing on a role: money and recognition. Julia Roberts couldn’t have predicted the part of Leigh Anne Tuohy that she passed on would win Sandra Bullock an Oscar for The Blind Side. I’m sure Charlie Hunnam had no idea when he bowed out of Fifty Shades of Grey that the film would gross more than $1 billion and secure an unimaginable payday for his replacement, Jamie Dornan. In the end, I imagine most actors just focus on the fact that they’re lucky to be where they are and look forward to the next project— leaving us all to wonder, what if...?

Aloha
TROPICAL DEPRESSION RATING: 5 out of 10
I
PROMISE YOU, no one was more excited to see this movie than I was. C a m e ro n C rowe is a gifted screenwriter, and Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper promised to light up the screen. Then, factor in a supporting cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray and John Krasinski, and how could you go wrong? They managed. Bradley Cooper plays Brian, a damaged military contractor returning to Hawaii to regroup after some devastating setbacks. There, he is assigned the all-too-spunky Allison Ng (Stone) as his handler. Also living on the island is Brian’s ex, Tracy (Rachel McAdams), with her new husband, Brian’s friend, Woody (Krasinski). With his attraction to Allison and his unresolved situation with Tracy, it’s a wonder Brian can even handle his rather dicey military assignment. Add to that, political and ethical drama, and you really have a lot to digest in 105 minutes. The real problem here is that the film tries to do too much. It’s Dances with Wolves meets Kramer vs. Kramer meets The Hurt Locker meets The Descendants. That confusion is complicated by the fact that Stone and Cooper have the spark of a wet match; it’s almost hard to imagine two such physically complementary people fizzling like that, oh well. The film is a valiant effort, with flashes of wit and intelligence; but overall, it takes on too much and accomplishes little.

The Barber of Seville BY MARK BRETZ
THE STORY Young and famous Count Almaviva becomes smitten with a young woman named Rosina during the annual April Fair in Seville, Spain, somewhere in time B.C. (before cell phones). Wanting her to love him for himself and not his fame or money, he appears disguised as a student named Lindoro outside her door. Rosina is more or less imprisoned in her house as the ward of the elderly Doctor Bartolo, who wants to marry her himself. She yearns for something more than being his assistant and sees possibilities in the student. Figaro, a self-proclaimed business whiz who says he is known as ‘The Barber of Seville,’ tells Almaviva that he will help ‘Lindoro’ win the heart of Rosina — for a fee, of course.
HIGHLIGHTS To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis presents one of opera’s most enduring comedies, The Barber of Seville, for the fourth time on the main stage at the Loretto-Hilton Center. The capacity audience on opening night attests to the continuing popularity of this always upbeat, consistently entertaining gift to the world by 19th-century composer Gioachino Rossini. A new English translation by Kelly Rourke, combined with some inspired stage direction by Michael Shell and the spirited conducting of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra by Ryan McAdams, makes this Barber a fresh, razor-sharp interpretation.
COMPANY: Opera Theatre of Saint Louis VENUE: Browning Mainstage, Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road DATES: June 6, 10, 14, 17, 27 TICKETS: $25-$129; 961-0644 or Experience Opera.org RATING: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews.com
Rourke’s new translation was commissioned by OTSL for its 40th year, and the result is smart, savvy, silly and successful. This story is given an even more refreshing interpretation by director Shell, who says in his program notes that he was inspired by the fantasy films of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Emily Fons, making her OTSL debut, possesses a strong, crystal clear mezzo-soprano that she demonstrates with command and control as Rosina. She’s capable with the comedy, too, playing nicely off of Christopher Tiesi’s Almaviva, Dale Travis as Doctor Bartolo and especially Jonathan Beyer in the title role. Beyer and Tiesi also are making their Opera Theatre debuts and do so in grand style. Beyer’s gangly physique is a good match for his flowing wardrobe and thick mane of hair, and his smooth baritone further fits Figaro’s genial disposition. Tiesi displays a good command of Rossini’s music and a capable comic touch, as well. Worthy of particular attention is Travis, who handles a number of Gilbert & Sullivanstyle patter songs with impressive vocal dexterity. Jeongcheol Cha, in yet another OTSL debut, brings a headbanger rock star approach to the role of Rosina’s music teacher, Don Basilio. The Barber of Seville is a time-tested treasure. This new interpretation is a timedefying but audience-pleasing romp that kicks off OTSL’s 40th anniversary season in sumptuous, spectacular style.

St. Louis barbecue is more than wellrepresented in the new book The 100 Best Barbecue Restaurants in America, by Johnny Fuggit. The Capitalist Pig, Bogart’s Smokehouse, The Shaved Duck, Pappy’s Smokehouse, Hendricks BBQ, Salt + Smoke and Vernon’s all are included in the lengthy list. In specific categories, The Shaved Duck ranked first in burnt ends; Pappy’s took the top spot for their turkey; and the Capitalist Pig had the best potato salad in the land. The drinks scene in the Lou continues to get national respect. In the latest issue of Esquire, St. Louis is heralded as Bar City of the Year, and The Royale made the magazine’s list of best bars in the country. Well done! Looks like 99 Hop House is now open for business at Hollywood Casino in Maryland Heights. The menu features plenty of pub fare like burgers, wings and nachos, and, of course, a huge beer selection. Chef JOSH GALLIANO of The Libertine has been tapped to compete in the Farm to Table Chefs Taste Challenge on Friday, Aug. 7, in New Orleans. He’ll be competing against chefs from across the country using a pantry of farmfresh ingredients. Good luck, Chef!

The Cauldron is Calling! BY SIDNEY LEWIS
IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME WE TURN around, there’s another great eatery opening its doors in the Delmar Loop. The latest one to tempt our palates is Seoul Q, featuring Korean cuisine. Co-located with sister restaurant Seoul Taco, Seoul Q is more of a sit-down scene, offering a choice of substantial Korean barbecue or hot pots, as opposed to Seoul Taco’s more portable fare. BBQ fans are seated at tables with built-in grills, where they can cook their meats to suit their own tastes. Hot-pot aficionados are directed to tables with induction burners in place to keep the pots at the proper temperature. We’ll definitely be sampling the BBQ offerings next time, but for our inaugural visit, the hot pots were calling. Before final decisions were made, a bevy of sides was brought out for snacking. These included three varieties of kimchi—cucumber, radish and cabbage—as well as sweet beans, crispy crouquet nuggets and savory strips of fish cakes. Kimchi of all types has long been a favorite for us. This fermented delicacy comes in all sorts of spice and heat levels, and these three are perfect examples of its delicious diversity. The cucumber variant is on the sweet side, with just a bit of bite; while the radish packs more heat and a satisfying crunch; and the traditional cabbage falls somewhere between the two. Not that our appetites needed further encouragement after all of those side tastes, but we hit the apps list, anyway, and ordered some Potstickers ($5) to ‘officially’ start the show. Unlike the usual
versions we’re used to, Seoul Q’s are heartier, with a heavy dough outside instead of the usual thin wonton wrapper, and full of tender pork. The hot pots on the menu all are substantial, each one yielding two to three servings. The ingredients incorporated in them range from seafood to chicken to all sorts of other meat and vegetables. The Troop Stew ($25) we selected was full of chunks of beef, several different sausages and Spam (yes, Spam), along with noodles, kimchi and assorted veggies, all marinating in a spicy broth. The whole meaty amalgam is topped with mozzarella. Definitely not the veg-centric hot pot of other Asian traditions. While Spam gets a bad rap as a mystery meat, it makes for a great addition to stews like this (and fries up quite nicely, as well). Digging into this hotpot can be a bit of a challenge because of the sheer volume of meaty goodness within, not a bad problem to have! The cheese does get pretty stringy, so an ample supply of napkins is essential. We washed all of this bounty down with a couple of bottles of Cass ($4), an authentic Korean lager. Another Korean beer, Hite, also is available, as well as Tona from Nicaragua, and local brews from 4 Hands and Schlafly’s. Some straight soju (a Korean neutral spirit) and a selection of soju cocktails also can be had, along with some drinks with other spirit bases. 6665 Delmar Blvd., Ste. 100 A, 925-8452, seoulqstl.com

Meanwhile, we’re developing them to lead lives of service, developing their sense of self, character formation, and helping them move forward to lead productive, full lives—lives of service to the world and their community.” STEM fields, so critical to 21st-century careers, also are alive and well at Villa, Hagemeister notes. He also notes that they are close to solving the abuse case and hopes someone has to answer for what they did to Diseno. “I have a feeling she might be our ‘spokesdog’ next year,” he says. “She loves all people and has an incredible ability to forgive, as
chemistry, biology and physics, she says that 90 percent of this year’s senior class exceeded that requirement, with about 60 percent taking five or more sciences. With a student-teacher ratio of 8:1 and an average class size of 15, students get the personalized attention required for advanced subject matter, she explains. “We use a very inquiry-based approach where the kids are the explorers in the curriculum. They’re not told the answer; but taught to explore and figure it out.” As a result, a number of students have been accepted to the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STaRS) program, where they work with researchers at area universities,
including Washington University and University of Missouri-St. Louis, she says. “The feedback we get is they do well, because they’re used to pushing the envelope in regard to asking questions and digging more deeply, which is what those fields need.” As this year’s graduating class moves on to the university level, at schools such as Stanford University, Vanderbilt University, Saint Louis University and the University of Missouri, Hagemeister is confident that they will be prepared. “They’re ready for the next phase—not just academically—but in the sense of having the fortitude, the skills and the interpersonal skills.”

says. “The community knows and respects us, and we’ve been able to solve many cases that way.” Years ago, Grim says it was a challenge to get anyone in the community to divulge information about animal abuse cases, but as the program has become more recognized, they’ve been able to prosecute felony animal-abuse cases with prison time. “We do this all out of love for the animals,” he says. “I always say that if we all took after our dogs’ ability to forgive, we would be such better human beings.”
