EDITOR ‌ALTHOUGH THE FIRST TRUE DAY OF SUMMER IS STILL ABOUT two weeks away, it’s safe to say that the seasons have unofficially shifted in St. Louis. Pools are open, temperatures are steadily rising and summer fun is in full swing – including in this week’s issue of Ladue News. This is the perfect time to transition from your spring to summer wardrobe – or go shopping for an entirely new one. LN fashion writer Katie Yeadon shares a collection of hot looks for keeping cool this summer on p. 48, including poolside and picnic-perfect ensembles. Bold and colorful patterns are particularly popular this season, and these looks illustrate just a few ways you can integrate them into your closet. Summer in St. Louis also means getting outside and enjoying the many activities and outdoor art events happening across the metro area. One of the best places to immerse yourself in alfresco fun is The Muny, which celebrates its 99th season this year. Read through theater critic Mark Bretz’s preview of the current season on p. 68 to find out what stellar performances are planned from June 12 through Aug. 13. All the best,

Genovese Jewelers

FROM ST. LOUIS

G

enovese is a familiar name to St. Louisans. With a tradition for supporting the city that has helped it to flourish, Genovese Jewelers continues to be at the forefront of consumers’ minds when it comes time to find or design that dream adornment – and that’s thanks to a family who has built their business around providing for their hometown. “Our commitment to local charities has stayed consistent. We’ve helped literally hundreds and hundreds of them,” president Joe Genovese says. “We’re very proud. Not only are we making jewelry in the U.S., we’re making it right here in St. Louis. We employ 30-plus employees and give them full benefits. They spend zero dollars, and [we make sure] we’re taking care of St. Louis families.” Beyond that, innovation has proven a steadfast methodology for the company. “When my father opened in 1981, we did not manufacture jewelry in-house,” Genovese shares. “When I turned 18, he came to me and said, ‘We’re going to start making the jewelry.’ I asked how, and he said, ‘Figure it out.’ It’s been a long road, but we truly have ‘figured it out.’” With three full-time computer-aided design drafters, two 3-D printers and one computer numerical control

milling machine running each day, Genovese has turned that vision into a worthy investment. Trends often influence clients’ requests, and Genovese is happy to oblige, finding opportunities to individualize. “We’ve seen this big shift over the years of either stacking rings and bracelets or layering necklaces,” Genovese comments. “Every famous designer around the world [is] coming up with these. In the fashion industry, we’ve seen yellow and rose gold. When we stack, we combine different types of metals and [create] all kinds of different shapes, with everything uniform or symmetrical. It’s given us the opportunity to do one-of-akind stacked rings. When it comes to necklaces, there is such versatility. They can be worn at three different lengths, doubled or tripled to fit any neckline – and that has been huge for us.” Genovese lists stacked bangles among his favorite pieces. “I love the combination of rose, yellow and white gold, with diamonds – and even mixing in black diamond stackables, too,” he says. “As fast as we make them, we sell them. It’s a wonderful problem to have.” Homegrown and stronger for it, the Genovese family wants their city to thrive in the way their jewelry business has, and so they continue to show appreciation however and whenever they can. 12460 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

unnyhill Inc.’s 10th annual Jim Hart Celebrity Golf Classic overwhelmingly succeeded as the largest fundraising event of the year for that nonprofit committed to creating the best quality of life for both children and adults with developmental disabilities. The two-day event, which raised more than $96,000, opened with a celebrity dinner party on April 23; guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, a meal, speakers and entertainment by legendary soul singer Theo Peoples. Then, on April 24, the course opened to players from around the area, who were joined by celebrities like Jim Hart and Jerry Holloway, as well as a number of other St. Louis Cardinals football legends, St. Louis Blues players and others, who paired with each foursome. This unique event took place at Eureka’s beautiful Legends Golf Club. With community support, Sunnyhill empowers individuals with disabilities to become productive citizens and achieve their individual dreams. For more than 700 clients each year, it provides residential services, educational programs and behavior analysis, as well as high-adventure recreational opportunities at its 65-acre camp in Dittmer. It seeks to foster independence, empowerment and a life lived to the fullest for people of all abilities.

earning doesn’t come easily for all children. That’s why the St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) helps kids learn, no matter how great the obstacles. “Whatever their diagnosis, including autism, we’re here to put our knowledge and expertise toward working on the problems that your child experiences so we can find a solution, and they can reach their full potential,” says Pam Kortum, LDA CEO. “It’s our hope that each child we touch will learn, develop and achieve to the best of their ability,” she adds, noting that the LDA acronym also fits the organization’s desired outcomes. One of the biggest struggles facing LDA is that public schools require a diagnosis for a child to access supportive services in the classroom. Many parents also chafe against the idea of “labeling” their child with a learning disability. “But without a label, the child is not entitled to services,” Kortum points out. “In addition, if the parent embraces the diagnosis and learns what the child needs to be successful, the child will eventually embrace it and become [his or her] own advocate.” In fact, Kortum encourages families to seek a diagnosis that will help the child better understand his or her specific learning style and identify what is needed to be successful in the classroom. “Done correctly, this knowledge will follow the student into whatever learning environment [he or she] chooses to tackle, including college,” she says. LDA offers testing at its Ballwin location and school-based one-on-one tutoring, advocacy for specific school-based programming and teacher training programs to help ensure educators are aware of and practicing the best accommodations for learning disabilities while encouraging children with special needs. The organization’s newest initiative, the School Outreach Program, allows schools to contract with LDA to provide education and support for teachers, as well as to work with students who need extra help. Cor Jesu Academy,

Whitfield School and St. James the Greater School are participating in the new program, and Kortum hopes to add a new school each year. She’s now offering proposals to three additional schools for the 2017-18 academic year. “LDA has a very extensive early-childhood outreach program in which we work with Early Head Start and Head Start to provide centers with education to help them create language-based learning centers for children who are at risk and in low-income situations,” Kortum says. To ensure that all children have access to LDA programs, the organization provides financial aid to those from low-income households. Last year, LDA provided more than $310,000 in free and reduced-fee services. One parent of a student receiving financial aid noted: “My household doesn’t receive food stamps, which puts a big dent into my monthly disability check. Also, my boys don’t have any health insurance, so when they’re sick, this also puts a dent in my check. I feel that if my son did not have the service [LDA] provides, he would be lost, and I wouldn’t know what to do as a parent. This is my only child who is diagnosed with a learning disability, which was a shock at first. Once I got over that, I started searching for services, and I thank God [LDA] was there to help.” In 2001, the organization was staffed by Kortum and a part-time secretary. The total budget that year was $125,000. Today, LDA has more than 30 staff members, a board of directors and a $1.5 million budget. Last year, the organization served more than 6,500 children and logged more than 35,000 interactions with children, parents and teachers. Beyond continuing to serve the St. Louis metro area, Kortum notes LDA may eventually expand geographically, too, possibly offering outreach in St. Charles County and elsewhere. CONCORDANCE ACADEMY OF LEADERSHIP

fter serving as CEO of Wells Fargo Advisors for 15 years, Danny Ludeman announced his retirement at age 56. He could have lived out his days on the golf course or traveled the world. But Ludeman wasn’t ready to sit back. “When I retired and people first heard I was involved in this, they thought I might be having a midlife crisis or would just be mildly involved,” he says. “But I am knee-deep in the details every day, and this is what I’m dedicating the rest of my life to.” Ludeman is referring to his new job as president and CEO of Concordance Academy of Leadership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to being “a leader in understanding justice-involved adults; engaging and teaching them effectively; and developing in them the strength of character, wisdom and skills required to make a positive impact – improving the vitality and safety of the community around them.” Ludeman founded Concordance upon receiving an emotional letter from a small group, Project COPE, which assisted with re-entry for people finishing long prison sentences. He developed a strategic plan to expand capacity, launching the academy in 2015, and began services last June. Concordance is poised to become a national force in reducing reincarceration through a multipronged, integrated approach that assists and supports people with overcoming the most challenging aspects of returning to the community. Ludeman notes that 77 percent of people who are released from prison return to jail within three to five years, a statistic that has remained static for three decades. With a strategic planning team of 70 individuals, including academics, public officials, attorneys and law enforcement officers, Ludeman set about building a program to meet each challenge faced by newly released prisoners. The issues fall into three broad categories: behavioral health and wellness, community and

24

life skills, and education and employment. Concordance addresses each area by customizing programs that begin six months prior to a prisoner’s release. The first class of former inmates began the program in June 2016, and Ludeman says that since then, two more classes have started. Eventually, new classes will begin every two months. Each class has about 40 participants, and Ludeman plans to serve about 250 participants annually. Before release, individuals work with Concordance clinicians to map out a pathway to success, considering mental and physical health care needs, substance use disorders, career readiness and job training, and emotional and family support. Following release, participants attend Concordance in Maryland Heights for six to nine weeks before they settle into a post-release schedule for the remainder of their first year after release. Concordance matches them to a full-time job that provides a living wage and helps them secure affordable housing. At the same time, a volunteer partnership team provides ongoing social, spiritual and life skills support. Currently, Concordance serves individuals incarcerated in three Missouri state prisons. “If you look at the number of people in this country who are affected by mass incarceration – people who have been in prison, people who are currently in prison or people who are waiting to go to prison, and their immediate families – it’s 100 million people,” Ludeman says. “From a numerical standpoint, it’s the third greatest social problem that our country faces after poverty and disease.” Ludeman is determined to correct that problem, and he’s convinced that Concordance Academy is the tool to do the job. RAINBOW VILLAGE

ary is 67 years old. She was born with cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities. As a child and young adult in St. Louis in the 1950s, she lived at home, enjoying regular coffee dates with her neighbors and being cared for by her family. However, as she and her parents aged, it became harder for Mary to remain at home. After some years in a local group home and following the death of her parents, Mary’s siblings moved her to a Rainbow Village home in 2014. Mary now lives near Rainbow Village’s Wolff Community Center, has improved her mobility and is again enjoying social interactions and activities. “She has resumed her regular coffee social calls and can be found most mornings enjoying coffee and conversation in the Rainbow offices,” says Michael Rea, executive director of Rainbow Village. “Not only has her health and quality of life improved, but she has truly blossomed with newfound independence and the support she needs from a loving community.” Mary is just one of the almost 300 residents living in 82 Rainbow Village homes throughout the St. Louis area. The organization’s mission is to “enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities by providing safe, affordable and well-maintained neighborhood homes.” Rea notes that Rainbow Village purchases as many homes as possible each year, maintaining the homes and renovating them to address the accessibility needs of residents. “We take pride in providing a home our residents can call their own,” he says. Eighteen partner providers place residents in Rainbow Village homes and help with programming and in-home care. St. Louis Arc, Easter Seals Midwest, Emmaus Homes, Crider Health Center and Creative Concepts for Living are among the many organizations that partner with Rainbow Village. Several families who had children with developmental disabilities created the Rainbow Village concept in the 1960s. Not wanting to institutionalize

their loved ones when they could no longer care for them themselves, the founding families sought other housing options that would provide ongoing shelter and support. By 1978, Rainbow Village owned 9 acres with seven homes, a community center and a respite care center. Each year, about 25 additional residents move into a Rainbow Village home, and of the current residents scattered throughout the greater metro area, many have lived in their home since Rainbow Village purchased it and will continue to live there throughout the rest of their lives. About 1,000 people each year use Rainbow Village’s Wolff Community Center, which has a warmwater therapeutic pool, a gymnasium, activity rooms and office space for both Rainbow Village administration and partner provider St. Louis Arc. “We have found that the work we do is in high demand,” Rea says. “In years past, moderate growth of two to three homes each year was enough. Now, we aggressively purchase more than six homes annually. There are currently 400 people in the St. Louis area waiting for residential placement.” Rainbow Village’s partnering support service providers consistently request Rainbow Village homes for their clients because the organization has a well-deserved reputation for keeping its properties maintained and allowing residents to “age in place.” Each house is selected with accessibility in mind, and if it’s not immediately accessible, it’s renovated so that those who live there can remain safe and comfortable as their needs change with age. “We’re St. Louis’ best-kept-secret not-for-profit,” Rea says. “Without our work, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities simply wouldn’t have the housing options they do now, and community inclusion wouldn’t be fostered. We love our residents and plan to continue to provide safe, affordable, well-maintained homes for them well into the future.” Rainbow Village, 314-567-1522, rbvstl.org

“Betty” Sims, whose office made strong strides for disability legislation throughout Missouri – Tallarico continues to support Rainbow Village’s mission and events. “This is a very strong organization with an engaged board, a great executive director and a dedicated staff,” she says. “The residents just make me smile. It’s just all positive, especially when I think of the residents who live in nice homes where they’re safe and happy. I wish we had millions more dollars to buy more homes, especially since we’ve seen state funding cuts that make it harder for caregivers and for people to find a good, safe living environment.”

Tallarico points out that Rainbow Village had “its most successful fundraiser ever” at the end of April with the annual Somewhere Over the Rainbow Gala, a dinner and dance with silent and oral auctions. She’s also impressed by the number of schools and other organizations that help maintain Rainbow Village homes as community service projects. “I’m glad to continue helping Rainbow Village,” she says. “It’s a great group, and it really makes people happy.”

CAIRO, EGYPT By Robyn Dexter The gateway city to the Nile Delta has stood the test of time. Cairo, Egypt, is one of the largest cities in Africa, and for thousands of years, it has called the banks of the Nile River home. The official name of the city is al-Qahirah, though in local speech, it’s typically referenced as the name of the country, Misr. Cairo is famed for its abundance of Islamic architecture, including many well-preserved mosques used by the city’s Muslim population. Just outside the city, visitors can find some of the most iconic architectural structures in the world: the Great Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx. Thousands of years after those wonders were built, visitors from around the world still flock each year to marvel at them. St. Louis-based BoKal Construction builds head-turning custom homes.

34

June 9, 2017 | LadueNews.com

K

en Callahan possesses a passion for making people’s dream homes become reality. The St. Louis native, who has more than 20 years of experience in local construction, gained a breadth of hands-on industry expertise as a carpenter and foreman during the first decade of his career. When he opted to strike out on his own with BoKal Construction in 2005, Callahan hit the ground running, implementing his expertise into everything from home remodeling to commercial projects. The commercial side of the business soon took off, with the company completing local businesses, such as Sterling Bank in Clayton, as well as multifamily residential complexes like a luxury apartment building, The Standard, in midtown St. Louis. All the while, Callahan continued his passion project on the side – bringing old houses back to life. And when he decided to build his own custom home in Town and Country, the second large custom home he had built for himself, he quickly started to receive requests to construct unique houses for friends. Today, about 30 percent of BoKal’s projects are commercial, as the company focuses 70 percent of its time on custom residential work. BoKal specializes in building dream homes for clients across St. Louis, from 3,000 to 9,000 square feet, modern to rustic, traditional to eclectic houses in Ladue, Town and Country, Kirkwood, Ballwin and beyond. “I like to work with a customer who wants that little something special to [give] their home that unique twist,” Callahan notes. Callahan works closely with each client to design and construct his or her ideal home. The custom design process – which can take anywhere from a week to multiple months, depending on the client’s wants and needs – begins with a meeting to discuss ideas and draw up rough sketches of the vision for the house, as well as consider recommendations for architects who

will complete the final blueprints. “One of the first questions I ask is, ‘What’s your vision? Can you paint me the picture of what you want for your home and the vibe of [each] room?’” Callahan says, adding that clients often bring magazine or online photos of houses they love as a starting point. “Then we really knuckle down and go for that vision.” With his hands-on approach to the design process, Callahan carefully and thoughtfully helps clients select every type of finish, flooring, lighting and paint color for the home. “There is not a lot of room for any kind of deviation from what the vision is,” he says. “If a color is off or doesn’t flow, we will repaint the whole house. We don’t make sacrifices of our clients’ wants or wishes for time and money.” BoKal also offers value engineering, in which the team dissects each part of the building process, from design to supplies, crews, engineering, utilities, permits and inspections, to achieve the best product for the best price. For instance, when bidding out your custom home, BoKal contracts with familiar subcontractors who can offer quality work at competitive prices. Callahan also says he keeps a lean, but experienced, construction staff, so he can pass along those savings to customers. Although the construction process can last several months, Callahan says BoKal has been lauded by local neighborhoods for its efficiency. For example, BoKal recently completed a 6,000-square-foot custom home in Town and Country in about seven months. Among BoKal’s recent residential projects are modern stucco and cedar shake-shingle homes with upscale amenities in Ladue, such as wine cellars, cigar rooms, gyms and theaters with stadium-style seating. “I just really like interesting custom projects,” Callahan says. “I want that house to be the headturner as people drive by.” One such property, 12 Williamsburg Estates in Town and Country, boasts a modern stone-and-brick façade

with tiered roofing, as well as amenities including two stone fireplaces, vaulted wooden ceilings, a luxurious master suite with heated tile flooring, a marble walk-in shower and soaker tub, and an expansive back deck. By applying his experience in both the residential and commercial industries, Callahan says he and his staff of seven have yet to come across a home-building obstacle they can’t overcome. So whatever you can dream up for your custom home, Callahan says he’s ready to rise to the challenge. “We will meet and exceed expectations to bring their dream home to life,” he concludes. AGENT PROFILE

Jill Malley OF LAURA MCCARTHY REAL ESTATE

‌F

By Amanda Dahl

or Jill Malley, the choice to start a career in real estate started when she placed a bet on herself. When an unexpected opportunity arose, she tried her luck. “It happened by chance … I met Kathy Beilein [the president of Laura McCarthy] at an early-childhood program in Clayton,” she describes. “So I took that [gamble] on myself.” As three decades with one agency proves, Malley won big. “I made an excellent choice in my career path, especially with the company I affiliated with,” she says. Over the course of her 32-year career, she has learned how to thrive while staying true to her own work ethic. “I hold high standards for myself – and for others I meet throughout this process,” Malley says. She explains which traits are most important in this profession, holding herself as accountable as she does any other professional. “Integrity, professionalism, ethics. I make sure I do the best I can while following the rules.” When asked about the most challenging aspect of

working in the housing industry, Malley answers, “The competition. Making sure clients are satisfied and gratified with the end results I achieve.” Fortunately, she handles each new situation with the same confidence and conviction that set her down this path of success. A closer examination reveals that luck has very little to do with Malley’s accomplishments, though. It is passion that drives her – and keeps her at the top of her game. “The problem-solving, coordination … helping buyers and sellers through this transition – oh, I love it!” she exclaims. With a strong moral fiber and a long-standing record of her capabilities as an agent, perhaps the best bet you can make when considering whether to buy or sell your home is on Malley herself. “I am confident in what I can do to achieve total satisfaction for my clients,” she says.

Farmers Market Polenta

‌P

Story, recipe and photography by Sherrie Castellano

olenta remains a favorite of mine, both to cook and to eat. Making it takes little time or effort, and it always results in a comforting, soul-satisfying meal. Polenta, it bears noting, constitutes a dish, not just an ingredient – a traditional northern Italian porridge made from ground cornmeal. Once cooked, though, it can be molded into solid shapes and crisped in the oven or on the grill; a very forgiving food, polenta has a few different popular preparations, each of which can be made ahead of time. That said, shopping for polenta can be confusing. Packages labeled polenta usually contain medium- or coarse-ground cornmeal, not prepared polenta. So if a bag of cornmeal doesn’t say polenta, but instead says medium-ground cornmeal, it should be fine to use in this recipe. (Avoid finely ground cornmeal or cornmeal flour, which yield an unfavorable, pastelike texture.)

“She’s so loving and attentive, and her overall demeanor is amazing,” he says. “She’s the perfect remedy for a hard day.”

For your own fairy-tail ending… “If I’m doing dishes or laundry, she’ll sit there and stare at me like, ‘Please love me,’” he says. “She’s so great.” Quartuccio says he’s had dogs his whole life, but Shiva tops them all.

bull was left for dead. She had several facial scars and a bad infection in her tail that left most of it useless. She was picked up by one of the animal crews in St. Louis in November 2016 and was taken to get cleaned up. The name Shiva means “transformation” and was a perfect fit for the rough road the pup would have ahead. The Even Chance Pit Bull Rescue team knew she’d have to have surgery to remove most of her tail, but it would be an expensive procedure. Miraculously, Jamie Buehrle, wife of Major League Baseball player and St. Charles native Mark Buehrle, saw the post about Shiva online and donated the money for the dog’s surgery. Enter Tony Quartuccio, who’s currently dating Even Chance vice president and director Heather Roberts. Quartuccio was interested in getting a dog, and Roberts knew exactly whom he had to meet. “We went to a Christmas event at a pet store, and I had the opportunity to take a bunch of pictures with Santa and Shiva,” Quartuccio says. “I filled out an application [to adopt her] immediately.” He adopted Shiva officially a few weeks before Christmas – the perfect gift. “She’s improved so much since her surgery and since her adoption,” he says. “Sitting was really hard for her at first, so we had to work on that when her tail had healed.” Since her adoption, Shiva’s learned to sit and shake on command. Quartuccio says he recognizes that she’s had some trauma over her short life, so sometimes it’s hard for her to learn things. “I’ve had her for a while, but she still tries to go through the hinge side of the door,” he says with a laugh. “I don’t think she’s all there, but she’s the absolute best.” Since she’s still pretty young, Quartuccio says Shiva frequently gets the “zoomies,” where she just runs around like a maniac. In one of these running fits, she was going full-tilt through the house and jumped up on the buffet table. “She knocked everything off and then realized she didn’t know how to get down,” Quartuccio recalls. He had to pick up his 60-pound pup to get her down off the table. Shiva is also a bit of an attention hog and will demand to be loved if Quartuccio is in the middle of something else.

ven adult hackers with zero eye-hand coordination – folks whose golfing skill ranges solely between whiffs and chunks – should hail the efforts of The First Tee of Greater St. Louis. Both locally and nationally, that nonprofit organization seeks to “impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf,” according to the local chapter’s website – a mission the chapter hopes to abet with an upcoming fundraiser. Michele D. South, The First Tee’s executive director in St. Louis, pauses from attending to her duties to provide details on both the chapter’s 11th Annual Golf Fore! Kids Golf Tournament & Auction in specific and The First Tee in general. First, significantly, South identifies the tournament and auction as “our biggest fundraiser of the year” and says it “raises almost a third of our annual budget.” Starting at 10:30 a.m. with registration and ending around 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, a reception, awards and an auction, it will take place Mon., June 26, at St. Louis’ Norwood Hills Country Club. Regarding The First Tee in general, South initially addresses the organization’s Green Grass program, “which has a special focus on innercity, low-income and underprivileged youths” but which welcomes all youths ages 5 to 17. “In 2016, the program served 700 youths from all different socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds from over 200 greater St. Louis schools,” she says. This year, South estimates The First Tee’s Green Grass program will serve more than 750 young participants in eight-week golfing sessions at six sites across the metro area. She likewise projects The First Tee will serve more than 8,000 youths in 2017 through life-skills outreach to area boys’ and girls’ clubs, parks and recreation departments, schools and other outlets. “This outreach is critical for identifying at-risk youths,” South remarks. “Partnering with 63 area elementary schools, The First Tee trains physical education teachers in the ‘Nine Core Values’ and golf basics,” she continues, referring to what the organization’s website terms “some of the many inherently positive values connected with the game of golf”: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. “The schools receive equipment and a coordinating curriculum for kindergarten

through fifth grade,” South says. “Physical education teachers are then able to use the curriculum to inspire and teach schoolwide learning on the character traits, core values and etiquette of the game of golf, in a fun, age-appropriate way.” In 2017, South estimates The First Tee will serve a whopping 20,000-plus youngsters through such partnerships. With inherent life skills, all told, she says, “In 2016, The First Tee of Greater St. Louis served over 27,600 youths, and in 2017, we anticipate serving 29,000.” South calls sports like golf “an effective vehicle to develop our youths and promote academic, career and life success,” citing conclusions from the Research Digest, published quarterly online by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. She also cites highlights from independent research confirming the benefits of The First Tee’s efforts for participants: “Seventy-three percent reported high confidence in their ability to do well academically,” “82 percent felt confident in their social skills with peers” and “52 percent credited the program for their ability to appreciate diversity.” Further research, South relates, testifies to The First Tee’s “lasting impact, creating better citizens and lifelong golfers in the process.” Specifically, she says that “91 percent of alumni engaged in community service while in The First Tee, and 72 percent continued after their time in the program ended. These numbers are significant compared to the 22 percent of U.S. citizens between ages 16 and 24 participating in community service.” Such character-building efforts ramify, South adds. “Research shows high-quality character education leads to scholastic achievement,” she says. “The foundation for cognitive, social and emotional development is laid in the first years of life.” South continues by noting that more than 80 percent of teens and alumni state The First Tee helped them become better students – an influence that generalizes. “Our program aims to get young people ready for life’s challenges, and teens and alumni report just that,” South says. “The longer they stayed in the program, the more they reported an improvement of interpersonal skills, managing emotions, goal-setting and resilience.” Such metrics strongly suggest how and why The First Tee has succeeded. “In 2006, we started at one program location and served around 180 participants,” South says. “This June started our 11th year, and we have grown tremendously – not only in the number of youths we serve each year but [also] in the number of

coaches, volunteers, staff and program locations.” She adds that the nonprofit has avoided “just playing a numbers game” – taking the time to lay a solid foundation for program growth. South also mentions another merit of increasing significance nowadays. “We provide full scholarships or reduced fees to deserving youths who are on free and reduced lunch, as well as college scholarships to youths who have been in the program for two years or more,” she says. Finally, South discusses the organization’s Green Grass alumni, especially once they’ve “aged out” after 18, with regard to college and other involvement with golf. “Unfortunately, we’ve found once kids start driving, a lot of them leave the program,” she admits. “We’ve had 20 kids stay in the program until they graduated high school. Of those 20, 19 have gone on to college, and one went into the military. Of the 19 that went on to college, six were given scholarships for college either from The First Tee or from The First Tee of Greater St. Louis. … “We stay in touch with most of the participants who have graduated from the program, and some even work for us during the summer when they’re home from college. We have one participant who has gone on to graduate from college and is now coaching a college golf team.” That participant, South adds, now contacts The First Tee for potential recruits to his own program. Starting with birdie, golfing lingo incorporates enough avian terms to begin an ornithology primer: eagle, albatross, condor, ostrich. In its efforts on behalf of area youths, appropriately, The First Tee’s organizers seem intent on using golf, whose play hinges so much on airborne activity, to help those youths to soar. outh Grand’s Pizza Head, which opened just last month, features vegetarian and vegan New York-style pies and slices paired with canned beer and punk rock. The pizzeria comes from Scott Sandler of Pizzeoli; Sandler opened that Soulard Neapolitan-style pizza restaurant in October 2014, with a remodel and expansion the following year. Pizza Head serves as a counterpart to Sandler’s artisan pies at Pizzeoli and pays homage to his New Jersey roots. “At my Neapolitan place, my work falls under a tradition that has certain parameters and style,” Sandler says. “Pizza Head is a passion project with

more room for creativity that will allow me to put out something unique.” The casual eatery features around 30 seats, filling the 1,200-square-foot space previously occupied by Brickyard Tavern and Absolutli Goosed. Design elements include hot-pink paint-splattered walls, neon-colored classic concert flyers atop tables, hanging Edison bulbs, original tin ceilings and a jukebox to tie everything together. In the kitchen, an Italian electric deck oven set to 575 degrees turns out 20-inch pies in only 4½ minutes. According to Sandler, the in-house dough incorporates high-gluten flour and cooks into a foldable crust that

By Mabel Suen has some bite and leans to crispiness. The majority of pizzas come with tomato sauce topped with shredded mozzarella, though a white sauce with an olive oil, garlic and ricotta base is also available. Also available is cashew cheese for a vegan alternative, along with vegan sausage and pepperoni. Additional toppings include onions, garlic, artichokes, spinach and jalapeños, as well as some of Sandler’s favorites: mushrooms, green peppers and olives. A simple salad incorporates greens, red onion and cheese with a guest’s choice of ranch or balsamic vinaigrette. To drink, diners can choose from two beers on tap

‌Story:  Leontes, the king of Sicilia, is overjoyed by the extended visit of his childhood chum Polixenes, now the king of Bohemia. After nine months, though, Polixenes yearns to return to his kingdom and his son, Prince Florizel. Leontes then asks his pregnant wife, Queen Hermione, to persuade Polixenes to stay a while longer. A few entreaties later, she succeeds. Or does she? Suddenly, Leontes becomes suspicious that Polixenes will listen to Hermione but not to him. He angrily accuses his wife of having an affair with his best friend, and orders the loyal lord Camillo to poison Polixenes. Instead, Camillo warns the latter, and the two of them flee to Bohemia. Meanwhile, Leontes has Hermione imprisoned, which leads to the death of their only child, Mamillius. He also instructs two Sicilian lords, Dion and Cleomenes, to visit the Oracle at Delphos for confirmation of the queen’s infidelity. Hermione gives birth to a girl named Perdita, who is brought to Leontes by her friend Paulina in an attempt to get him to express remorse and apologize. Instead, Leontes orders Paulina’s husband, Antigonus, to abandon the baby in a faraway land. Antigonus does so, landing in Bohemia before being killed by a bear. An elderly shepherd finds the baby and raises her as his own in the home he shares with his son. The noblemen return from the oracle with confirmation of Hermione’s innocence, which Leontes refuses to believe. Paulina informs him that Hermione has died. Eventually Leontes regrets his actions, but is told by Paulina he cannot remarry until she selects a queen for him. As 16 years pass, Perdita falls in love with Florizel, who is in disguise as a shepherd named Doricles. Polixenes is angered by this news, and with Camillo visits a sheep-shearing festival in disguise. He reveals himself to Florizel and forbids the marriage, but the two young people escape to Sicily. In that country, Leontes is reunited with his long-lost daughter, and Polixenes learns that Perdita has noble blood. When all of them descend upon the country home of Paulina, Leontes sees that a lifelike statue there of Hermione has come to life and is actually her. His penance paid, he is grateful for the return of his wife and daughter. Highlights:  One of Shakespeare’s later works, The Winter’s Tale is part tragedy, part comedy and part romance, in that order. Bruce Longworth, associate artistic director of Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, describes The Winter’s Tale as “one of my favorite plays.” As director of the festival’s current presentation, he’s dressed it up a bit and added a trick here and there to provide an evening’s entertainment under the stars in Forest Park.

Other Info:  Dorothy Marshall Englis costumes Longworth’s cast in attire more suited to Shakespeare’s time, with elegant threads adorning the royalty and utilitarian togs for the shepherds. In Scott Neale’s scenic design, an impressive, towering façade serves as background for the action at the front of the stage, with a colorful, pastoral backdrop for the second act, which takes place mainly in Bohemia. All of it enjoys careful illumination by lighting designer John Wylie, whose soft focus underscores the more romantic aspects of the second act, as well as the comic interludes. Rusty Wandall’s sound design blends with Wylie’s fearsome silhouette of a bear in the famous scene marked by the Bard’s direction, “Exit, pursued by a bear,” that precedes the death of Antigonus, with a mighty roar, as well as sounds of ominous thunder in other scenes. Longworth calls The Winter’s Tale “a harrowing story of what can happen when we act precipitously … At the same time, it’s optimistic in its belief … that true repentance can lead to true forgiveness, that love and faith are powerful things.”

Bugging Out!

I

n more halcyon times, a major childhood joy involved watching the sun set, anticipating the “magical” lights (fireflies) that appeared, and dancing and darting around the yard. So parents, close your eyes and remember being a child on a late spring or early summer night: the excitement of staying up late and playing outside after dark – so innocent, yet so thrilling! This rite of passage enchants children to this day. Whether day or night, kids always remain ready to be captivated by nature’s treasures – and parents, this month’s book suggestions should help you acquaint your children with the mysterious and fascinating world of insects. The Very Lonely Firefly by popular author/illustrator Eric Carle provides a delightful introduction to fireflies. With his inimitable collages, Carle crafts an inviting landscape featuring a naive bug venturing on its own for the first time. The titular lonely firefly, looking for companionship, seeks several sources of light, only to find just inanimate objects glowing all around. Babies and toddlers should enjoy the colors and textures in Carle’s illustrations, and preschoolers should independently identify what they see happening as the story progresses, even

anticipating and naming the various light sources. Also, children of all ages should love the illuminating “surprise” at the end of this board book! The beautiful Step Gently Out, this month’s second book, will go this summer to thousands of St. Louisarea children through the Ready Readers program. It features a poem by Helen Frost as the text and stunning photographs by Rick Lieder. Together, Frost and Lieder provide an amazingly intimate view of insects, one that allows readers to see the beauty of each creature. The lines of Frost’s poetry are split between photos, encouraging young readers to view each insect with awe, appreciating its individual marvels. The rhythm of

By Sheila Oliveri the prose poem should charm small children, and older ones should be fascinated at observing up close the intricacies of bugs’ forms. Parents, be sure to note the colors, shapes, sizes and names of the creepy-crawly critters. Also, expand your children’s enjoyment of the book by taking it outside and searching for specimens in the yard or a nearby park. Likewise, talk with your children about the role insects play in our environment and the need to respect them as living creatures; in that regard, urge your children to gently explore bugs’ lives, before returning them to their habitats so they can continue working. The world abounds with wonders great and small. So parents, grab a magnifying glass or a flashlight, and accompany your children outside to discover the many spectacles of our natural world both in daylight and after dark.

T

he voice of the people blends with the vision of the creative teams behind The Muny for the outdoor theater’s 99th season, which opens Mon., June 12. The season leading up to The Muny’s centennial celebration will feature seven productions, starting with Jesus Christ Superstar, which will run June 12 through 18. That will be followed by The Little Mermaid, the traditional “children’s show,” from June 20 through 29; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which runs July 5 through 11; All Shook Up from July 13 through 19; The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which will be performed July 21 through 27; A Chorus Line from July 29 through Aug. 4; and Newsies, which will close the season, performed from Aug. 7 through 13. All Shook Up and Newsies will mark their Muny premieres. As for the others, Muny president and chief executive officer Dennis Reagan says, “With the top five requested shows from our audience survey all included in the 2017 lineup, this year, more than ever, we have the exciting opportunity to offer our audience a season that is exactly

what they asked for.” Mike Isaacson, artistic director and executive producer for The Muny, is looking forward to unveiling each of the seven shows on the sprawling outdoor stage. “This is a challenging, vibrant, bold lineup,” he says, “with seven shows of terrific variety, and wonderful stories and gorgeous music.” Isaacson works with an impressive coterie of creative forces, most of whom have experience with The Muny but also some, such as Broadway legend Kathleen Marshall, who are experiencing the task of presenting a show before almost 11,000 people at The Muny for the first time. “It’s sort of a fascinating dance,” Isaacson says, describing how directors, choreographers and other professionals are selected for various shows. “Sometimes I look at something we’ll be doing and think it would be a good fit for someone. It’s also a real joy that The Muny is an amazing place to develop their talent, to push them and challenge them.

“The other thing that comes into play,” he adds, “is that I might call them and say, ‘This might be interesting for you, but is there anything else [on our schedule] that really excites you, that is really thrilling and that you’re passionate about doing?’” The Muny will return several veteran creative folks to weave their magic with the sundry presentations starring top professional artists. “Each of these teams is set to create productions that will leap from the stage into our audience’s hearts,” Isaacson says. Last performed at The Muny in 2005, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar will feature Bryce Ryness as Jesus of Nazareth, Constantine Maroulis as Judas Iscariot, Ciara Renée as Mary Magdalene and Ben Davis as Pontius Pilate, all Broadway veterans. Returning to The Muny to helm this presentation about the week leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus is director Gordon Greenberg, who also guided Muny productions of West Side Story and Pirates!, as well as choreographer Jon Rua (Aida) and music director Colin Welford. Disney’s The Little Mermaid, previously performed at The Muny in 2011, returns with Marcia Milgrom Dodge directing, as she has done with Young Frankenstein, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story and The Addams Family. She’ll be joined by choreographer Josh Walden (Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story) and music director Charlie Alterman (Young Frankenstein, Hairspray and Chicago). With a book by Doug Wright based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, The Little Mermaid cast will 42nd Street feature Swedish-American actress Emma Degerstedt as Ariel, Tony and St. Louis Theater Circle nominee Emily Skinner (Follies at The Rep) as Ursula and Jerry Dixon as King Triton. Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a musical comedy set in ancient Rome that includes a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart of M*A*S*H TV fame. Performed at The Muny in 1979 and 2000, the production for this year includes in its cast Peter Scolari as Pseudolus, Muny favorite John Tartaglia (Aladdin) as Hysterium and Ali Ewoldt (West Side Story) as Philia. Gary Griffin, who previously directed Mary Poppins, Into the Woods, Aladdin and Fiddler on the Roof for The Muny, will direct, with choreography by Alex Sanchez (Mary Poppins, Fiddler and Aladdin) and music direction by Brad Haak (Fiddler, Into the Woods, South Pacific and The King and I). Haak, it bears noting, is a 2016 St. Louis Theater Circle winner for The Rep’s production of Follies. Set to the chart-topping hits of rock ’n’ roll’s king, Elvis Presley, and based on Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night, All Shook Up is set in the 1950s and focuses on a tomboy mechanic named Natalie and a mysterious roustabout named Chad. Caroline Bowman will make her Muny debut in the role of Natalie, with Tim Rogan

as Chad, Muny favorite Lara Teeter (Hairspray) as Jim Haller and Liz Mikel as Sylvia. The creative team will be helmed by director Dan Knechtges (Seussical, the top show in Ladue News’ 2014 year in review, and Mamma Mia!), choreographer Jessica Hartman (Mamma Mia!, Hairspray and Seussical) and music director Charlie Alterman (Hairspray and Legally Blonde). Last seen at The Muny in 1989, The Unsinkable Molly Brown returns under the direction and choreography of three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes, Grease, Follies and 1776), making her Muny directorial debut. It’s a fictionalized version of the life of Missouri-born Margaret “Maggie” Brown Tobin, also known as Molly Brown, who survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Musical adaptation, musical direction, vocal and incidental arrangements are by Michael Rafter, who has a long list of credits with the likes of Sutton Foster, Kevin Bacon and Cyndi Lauper. The new adaptation features lyrics and music by Meredith Willson of The Music Man fame, who wrote the original 1960 musical, along with additional lyrics and a book by Dick Scanlan. It’s based on the original book by Richard Morris and new songs from the Willson songbook. Its cast will include Beth Malone as Molly, Paolo Montalban as Arthur and Whitney Bashor as Julia. A Chorus Line, the Pulitzer Prizewinning story about dancers auditioning for places in the chorus line of a Broadway musical, returns to The Muny for the first time since 2002, with Denis Jones (2016 St. Louis Theater Circle Award for best choreography for The Muny’s 42nd Street) providing both direction and choreography, as he has done previously for Chicago, Grease and Spamalot. Music director Ben Whiteley (42nd Street, My Fair Lady, Spamalot and Pirates!) joins Jones, along with a cast that includes Bianca Marroqúin as Cassie and Megan Sikora as Sheila. A Chorus Line features music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirwood and Nicholas Dante. Closing out the 99th season will be the Broadway sensation Newsies, making its Muny debut. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Newsies tells the story of the newsboys’ strike of 1899 in New York City against the titans of the publishing empires. Chris Bailey (Tarzan, My Fair Lady and West Side Story) will direct and choreograph, and Michael Horsley (23 years with The Muny, including Mamma Mia!, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story and Grease) will be musical director. The cast features Jay Armstrong Johnson, Tessa Grady and Davis Gaines. The sky literally is the limit for this and every Muny season, where theater and the great outdoors make for a winning combination. The Muny, 1 Theatre Drive, St. Louis, 314-361-1900, muny.org
