So – potato salad (see p. 48)! A vinegar base, a mayo base or neither? AMANDA DAHL Any and all. I love potatoes in just about every form. So I’ll take my potato salad in whatever way, please!

ROBYN DEXTER I’m not picky about potato salad, as long as it’s mustard-y and has something that goes crunch in it. All I know is that if I’m at a picnic or barbecue, I’m beelining for it!

BRYAN A. HOLLERBACH Nothing against the vinegar, but I’ll go with the mayo. Mom’s always made it that way, with lots of mayo and mustard and onions and spuds – just thinking about it makes my stomach rumble!

EDITOR ‌ON THE HUNT FOR OUR FIRST HOME, MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE had the opportunity to view several properties both old and new in the past few weeks. Although I love the thought of a turnkey home, there is something about renovating an older home that makes my imagination run wild. The original details – arched entryways, detailed molding and beautiful hardwood floors – are just a few things that newer builds often lack. In this week’s Abode section, LN contributor Connie Mitchell shares the story of UIC Homes, a local company that specializes in home design, building and remodeling, and that might agree with my take on older homes. UIC is renovating older homes in need of preservation with a midcentury twist. Read all about the company’s innovative work and designs starting on p. 31. And in our Style feature, LN contributor Denise Kruse shares the story of Sammysoap – a Kirkwood-based company that makes handmade soap, all natural skin care products and much more. Not only are they creating pure products, but also, according to their website, they are “a job creation machine for adults with intellectual disabilities disguised as the world’s best soap company.” As someone with a loved one with an intellectual disability, I know the important role businesses like Sammysoap play in providing people with a sense of independence and purpose. All the best,

uests were invited to dust off their derby hats and iron their seersucker suits! The Wyman Center’s ninth annual Spring Derby was held at the Rialto Ballroom at the Centene Center for Arts and Education in St. Louis. Everyone enjoyed listening to the live band while sipping drinks, noshing apps and, of course, betting on their favorite horses. Wyman envisions a day when all young people in America will have the opportunity to thrive in learning, work and life. It seeks to empower teens from economically disadvantaged circumstances to lead successful lives and build strong communities. Co-chairing the event were Zeynep McLeane and Lindsey McCabe.

he Snow Foundation for Wolfram Syndrome research hosted Eat, Drink, Give on May 14 at the Bauernhof and carriage house at Grant’s Farm. The event sought to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Wolfram Syndrome, a rare and deadly form of diabetes. Research toward a cure is being spearheaded in St. Louis at Washington University School of Medicine by an elite team of physicians and researchers alongside Stephanie Snow Gebel, whose daughter suffers from the affliction. Gebel is the daughter of the late Rams great Jack Snow and sister of retired Major League Baseball player and six-time Golden Glove winner J.T. Snow. Attendees at Eat, Drink, Give enjoyed live entertainment from St. Louis favorites Dance Floor Riot, great food, cocktails, a variety of beer tastings and much more. Hosting the evening’s festivities was KMOV TV anchor Steve Savard. Sponsors included KMOV, Grant’s Farm, Concrete Strategies, Clayco and 101 ESPN Radio St. Louis.

I love kids more than anything, and I think what we do is focused on children who are suffering, so this is very important to me. As a physician, I believe a lot in learning a lot about common diseases, and we neglect the rare diseases. Being overlooked over the years, I think that if we study rare diseases, I believe we can learn more about common diseases. The purpose of what we’re doing is to find a cure for Wolfram Syndrome; in doing so, we have uncovered different drugs that actually treat diabetes. We have identified a whole new cellular mechanism that other organizations have not.

he St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) recently held its Annual Scholarship Golf Classic at Bogey Hills Country Club. The day included a fourperson scramble format, silent auction, player gifts, cash prizes, lunch and more. Proceeds from the event benefit the St. Louis LDA’s Scholarship Program, which helps local children with learning differences and disabilities to reach their full potential. The St. Louis LDA has made an impact on more than 31,000 children, parents and educators in the greater St. Louis area. Jerry Warden, Jeremy Warden

Our main goal is to help kids learn. Students struggle all the time in the classroom, and when there isn’t someplace they can go to get help with testing, tutoring, and the like, we step in and fill that need. In essence, our main focus is to help kids learn how to become successful and excel at life. We help all kids, and it doesn’t make any difference what’s wrong with them; we help them become successful in the classroom. PAM KORTUM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

aving served 1,500 homeless individuals this year through its seven programs, Peter & Paul Community Services celebrated its commitment to providing housing and supportive services to individuals who are homeless, at its Under One Roof – It’s Magical Gala. Held at its Safe Haven facility in south St. Louis, the gala featured many silent-auction items, which guests browsed under a tent outside while enjoying cocktails and appetizers. Guests then entered the decorated gym, where they enjoyed dinner and music by the David Black Group. After raising money for the organization, the evening’s featured performer, illusionist Joel Meyers, took the stage and both amused and astonished guests with his humor and his amazing tricks and illusions. Among other things, Peter & Paul Community Services offers an emergency shelter, a meals program, transitional housing, homeless supportive services, permanent supportive housing, an art program and even a Sport for Social Change soccer team, the St. Louis Roadies.

a serious cook’s kitchen. What is most amazing about this kitchen is the cook and his wife. Their passion for food and family fills this space. Everything was designed to be within reach so he could cook like crazy. Including the 12 x 4 foot movable island big enough to house a roasted pig. Not one of the 12 burners, massive grill, griddle, or oven rotisseries goes unused. Fresh produce & spices from their gardens are an integral part of all the chopping, canning, sautéing, roastings…and, of course, eating! The glass porch area and arched openings were designed to welcome family, guests, and outside in. No one leaves this space hungry.

TEXTURAL RENEWAL

J

ennifer Rapp of JCR Design Group was tasked with updating the interior look of this client’s home in Webster. The living room originally had a mix of darker, more-traditional pieces. The client was ready for something lighter and more contemporary – starting with the walls, which were painted a neutral taupe. The client was willing to give up the rug pictured, but Rapp thought otherwise. “I thought it was a wonderful base for her colors and her furniture,” Rapp says. “I talked her into keeping that. We went up from there.” Some pieces, like the sofa, were reupholstered, while others were replaced. The antique pine table under the window was repurposed, now doubling as a buffet or bar for entertaining. The coffee and end tables were custom-made with iron and glass. “We concentrated on textures and straight, clean lines,” Rapp says. Some of the contemporary artwork decorating the room speaks to the client, including the iron horse statues. Rapp says the client and her daughter are both avid riders. “The minute we saw them, she fell in love with them,” Rapp says. In the end, Rapp says the room achieved the client’s goal of creating an updated, casual and uncluttered look.

hen you drive past North New Ballas and Ladue roads in Creve Coeur, you soon might notice a change of scenery: Two new homes are being constructed on 1-acre lots by UIC Homes, a local company specializing in home design, building and remodeling, which describes the 3,000-square-foot homes as having a “synthesis of midcentury with contemporary design.” “Part of midcentury marquee was that it opened the door to a lessformal and more-practical way of living,” explains Brent Crittenden, the company’s CEO and managing principal. He notes that midcentury modern style developed as “an American interpretation of European modernism in the 20th century,” hallmarks of which include open floor plans, integrated technology and indoor-outdoor living spaces. Midcentury modern buildings are not uncommon in suburbs like Creve Coeur, Ladue and Kirkwood. In fact, Crittenden points out that local organizations like ModernSTL and Landmarks Association of St. Louis are advocating for the upkeep of such older homes now in need of preservation.

The homes are not just designed with the building aesthetic in mind, Crittenden says, adding: “The lots are generous with their potential to unite home with land. They include multiple outdoor spaces that are extensions of indoor living, allowing for fluid and open living on multiple levels.” The deck, pool area and yard all offer lifestyle and recreational space, which is part of the overall vision for the property. Regarding the development overall, Crittenden states, “Our vision for this development is to create a set of individually designed homes that match each other in aesthetic but are unique in their responsiveness to site, orientation and configuration. Ultimately, we envision designing and building as many homes in this area as there are clients looking to create unique residences they have not been able to find otherwise.” UIC handles the process from concept through final details. The company’s services include architecture, urban design, planning, real estate development, general contracting and carpentry. During the

past decade, the firm has developed the Botanical Heights neighborhood, building almost 40 homes, dozens of apartments, a school, offices and restaurants. It also has done work in Tower Grove, Lafayette Square, Shaw, The Grove and the Central West End. Sarah Gibson, UIC’s design principal, notes that the design process begins with looking at a location’s history and physical attributes. “Beyond considering the existing context of the area and land, we look for underlying patterns that can suggest a new approach or way of seeing what’s already there,” she says. “We refine this approach through internal critiques generated by an open-office environment that encourages participation and discussion about ongoing projects. Minor modifications to the design and the presentation of the home really come to life once the homeowners provide their input. Generally speaking, the process goes from broad ideological and observational strokes to organizing the layout and flow to a close consideration of details and final touches.” One of the ways that UIC offers additional support in the homebuying process is the availability of in-house interior designer Paige McClellan, who heads the firm’s Refine division that focuses on interiors and renovation projects. Homebuyers will be able to work with McClellan to choose everything from small finishing touches to overall interior concepts. Another aspect of the new homes that buyers will appreciate is the focus on efficiency. The homes will be situated to consider sunlight and solar potential, cross-ventilation and rain gardens to help control stormwater runoff. Building materials have a high R-value, a measure of

insulation; heating and cooling will be high efficiency; and buyers can opt for solar panels and other “green” options. “We pride ourselves in not only being experts in green building, but [also] tailoring it to our clients’ needs,” Crittenden says. “We have learned that green building is not a one-size-fits-all formula, but rather a process of working with clients to design to their comfort range and living habits.” Beyond concern for the sustainability of the individual home sites, UIC is partnering with Voices of Women, a community organization that has created Housing NOW, a program designed to provide affordable housing to low-income families in the city. One percent of the two UIC homes’ sales will be donated to the project, and Crittenden notes that UIC is seeking additional ways to give back to the community as it continues to build in the area. Who does UIC envision in these new homes? “The homes are designed with a particular kind of homeowner in mind: one who is an early-adopter of technology, interested in design, stylish without being pretentious and confident that they can detect value in less obvious places,” Crittenden says, noting they can appeal to families, emptynesters and young couples. “We see these homes [not only] as being wonderful places to live in the present, but also as designs that will stand the test of time as lifestyles evolve and architectural styles come and go. Our homes celebrate the evolution of family, the role of gathering and the importance of holistic and sustainable living.” UIC Homes, 1607 Tower Grove Ave., 314-771-7300, uicstl.com

“Do you use soap?” The first question that Chris Moritz, the soap-maker at Sammysoap, asks as the tour begins around a giant double boiler in the Kirkwood vegan soap shop’s backroom factory seems easy enough to answer. “Yes, I do,” I reply. “Are you sure?” Moritz responds. By now I’m not sure. And by the end of the tour, I’ve learned enough about the history of making soap and the soap-making process at Sammysoap to know: I’m probably not using soap, in the purest sense of the word. Soap, according to Sammysoap co-owner Karen Copeland, has been made the same way for millennia. Toward the end of the 19th century, the chemical revolution was on the rise, and synthetic chemicals were introduced to everyday household products, including soaps. Nowadays,

we’re mostly aware of commonly found pitfalls – mystery ingredients cloaked under the amorphous term fragrance, hormone-disruptive parabens and oil-stripping sulfates. “The chemicals were introduced to these products a little over 100 years ago – prior to that, it was always plant-based,” Copeland says. “We haven’t had comprehensive legislation regarding skin care products since 1938. “Think of soap like food,” Copeland continues. “Processed food is technically still food; however, we all know that food from a box is hardly the same as an organic, farm-fresh meal prepared by a master chef.” The Sammysoap idea was born the same way Copeland and her co-owner and college best friend, Beth Forsee, win over new Sammysoap users time and time again: experientially. For Christmas four years ago, Copeland’s cousin made all-natural lavender-oat soaps that she gifted to the entire family. “I really hadn’t thought too much about soap prior to that, but I’m using the soap that winter, and I’m thinking, ‘This is the best soap I’ve ever used,’” Copeland recalls. The following spring, Copeland’s younger son, Sam Shortal, who has a mental disability, graduated from a three-year Special School District high-school program at Fontbonne University. Upon Sam’s graduation, Copeland realized that unless she somehow found a way to work with Sam or provide a meaningful day for him, his only option was full-time adult day health care – which Copeland describes as an “unacceptable outcome.” As necessity is the mother of invention, Copeland and Forsee began brainstorming ideas that could incorporate Sam during the friends’ regular walks together. “I was so impressed with the natural soap and realizing so many people weren’t using it and didn’t know the difference,” Copeland says. With a long-term friendship involving complementary talents, Copeland and Forsee made natural partners. “She’s operations and numbers; I’m more creative,” Copeland says. To realize Sammysoap (named, of course, for Sam), Forsee and Copeland partnered with Joe Fischer, whom the pair has known since their freshman year at the University of Missouri and who was married to Forsee’s sister, the late Susan Fischer. The company set up shop in November 2014 in the building that formerly housed Kirkwood’s fire station (from 1914 to 1966), a prime location across from the Kirkwood Amtrak station. Copeland, Forsee and their team produce their all-natural, plant-

based vegan soaps in their factory, housed in the backroom of the historic storefront. The factory side of the operation is open to scheduled public tours, making the shop a destination as well as a retail space. This is where the mission team comes in. Sammysoap, according to its mission, is “a job-creation machine for adults with intellectual disabilities, disguised as the world’s best soap company.” Through Sammysoap, adults with intellectual disabilities can find much-sought-after autonomy and independence as valued employees within the company. “We’re not trying to create a sheltered workshop – we’re creating an inclusive environment,” Forsee says. “People want independence. We’re all disabled here. We’ve all got our quirks.” As a soap company, that moniker of “world’s best” might not be too far off. Sammysoap’s products are 100 percent plantbased – “no artificial anything,” Copeland says – made with food-grade vegan oil as the base, mixed with seemingly endless combinations of essential oils, herbs, oats and more from the Oils used in the soap-making process. highest-quality vendors. Copeland and Forsee work with Moritz to create the best combinations of ingredients that ensure a good lather on a long-lasting bar that will hold its fragrance to the very last scrub. In addition to traditional bath soaps, the shop carries laundry detergent; super-concentrated insect repellent; essential oils; special-use bars of soap for shampoo, acne/face, dogs, babies, gardeners and mechanics; a full line of shave soaps; and a fan favorite – the spa pumice bar. There are plans to expand the company line to include all-natural candles, as well. It’s not just a tricky answer to a trivia question – skin is the body’s largest organ, and as such, a skin care regimen should be given as much regard as diet and exercise. “It’s permeable,” Copeland reminds us. “What you put on your skin is absorbed in your body.” Sammysoap, 123 W. ‌Although I’m fairly certain that most people like potatoes in general, I think there are a lot of opinions out there about potato salad. There are supporters of the creamy mayo-based variety, the tangy vinegar-based kind and fans of everything in between. Personally, I love indulgent, creamy, classic American potato salad – you know, the type that’s pre-prepared in the deli section, the kind your grandmother makes, loaded with mayonnaise, mustard, celery and sometimes dill. I could eat gallons of it. Yes, this is a confession, a deep, dark secret really. But I can’t possibly be the only person who feels this way. There’s something really nostalgic and comforting about the potato salad we were served growing up. Whether you hail from the creamy or the tangy camp, I know we can all agree that potato salad makes us feel happy and thankful for the long summer days still ahead. For all of its tasty qualities, potato salad is rarely good for you. This pesto potato salad with kale, however, packs a nutritionally dense punch, filled with leafy greens, healthy plant-based fats and even some vitamin B from the nutritional yeast. It’s also packed with herbs and has a rich depth and texture. This potato salad recipe borders on healthy, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it – and that’s a good thing. You can feel proud serving this side at all of your cookouts, parties and picnics this summer.

AND THE MEADOWS FAMILY By Robyn Dexter

‌ONCE UPON A TIME, BROOKE

Meadows and her husband weren’t looking to adopt any animals. They had a 1-year-old baby, and it didn’t seem like the right time. However, Meadows does adoption events for Gateway Pet Guardians to showcase its adoptable dogs, and she fell in love with a dog named Escalade. “We ended up deciding to take him and go through the adoption process,” she says. “We renamed him Champion and moved into a house after renting.” When the dog they had before Champion passed away, the family knew they were ready for two dogs again. One day, Meadows found a dog with “big bat ears” on Gateway’s website, and she just had to go meet her. “She seemed like she had the most personality of any dog I had ever seen,” Meadows says. “We had a meeting to get her, and now we have two Gateway dogs.” The bat-eared dog, who was renamed Rey, was picked

up off the street. Meadows says the staff at Gateway told her they wanted to get Rey off the streets before she had puppies. It’s estimated she’s about two years old. The Meadows family has had Rey for nearly two months, and “she fits in perfectly,” Meadows says. “Champion loves cuddling, but doesn’t always take to new dogs. They were curled up together the first night. He immediately fell in love with her,” Meadows says. Rey’s a short dog, but absolutely loves sitting at the window and watching squirrels. Meadows says she’ll run to the back door and wait to be let out to go chase them. “She likes the kids a lot,” Meadows says. “She’s

so good with them and will give them kisses. Rey is definitely a nanny dog.” The best part of having Rey around is the affection she gives, Meadows notes. “She loves cuddling up to you,” she says. “She wants to run all the time, but when you’re tired and curled up on the couch, she’ll sit with you and snore. She has a great little snore.” Rey has some allergies and gets regular baths, but Meadows says she’s gotten used to them and is very tolerant. Overall, Meadows says Rey is the most affectionate dog she’s ever met. “I haven’t had a single person come over that hasn’t fallen in love with her,” she says. “The other day, my mom came over, and Rey started attacking her with kisses. ‘I see why you got her,’ she said.”

Putting St. Louis

on the Map By Connie Mitchell

A new comprehensive guide to the city, Guidester, maps the top spots and neighborhoods for incoming students.

S

tudents considering relocating to St. Louis to attend the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis now have a new tool available to help them learn more about the city and its surroundings. Guidester, a travel company based in St. Louis, recently partnered with the school to provide potential and new students with a comprehensive guide that highlights St. Louis’ beauty, culture and businesses. “The primary purpose behind the new guidebook is to help students transition to the city and show them that St. Louis is, in fact, a great place to live and study,” says Jack Baumann, Guidester’s founder and CEO. Feedback from potential Olin School of Business students has been positive, and Guidester might soon create similar guidebooks for other local institutions for recruiting. Although the book provides an overview of St. Louis, it’s tailored to the institution’s target market and updated with each new print order. “We check for business closures, changes in opening and closing times, prices, and add or remove places based on relevancy,” Baumann says. Potential Olin School of Business students who peruse the guidebook can read a brief history of St. Louis and of the school, as well as a list of the “best things to see and do” in St. Louis; learn about surrounding neighborhoods, transportation and housing options in the area; and explore information about local restaurants, grocers, nightlife, culture and shopping that especially appeal to students. For example, students can learn about such local attractions as the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium and the Saint Louis Zoo. Shopping, dining and nightlife options are listed by area for University City, as well as neighborhoods such as the Central West End, DeMun and Skinker/ DeBaliviere. Local shops such as United Provisions, Straub’s and Parker’s Table are listed alongside Schnuck Markets; numerous restaurants are listed, including Three Kings Public House and The Scottish Arms; and students are introduced to entertainment and nightlife venues such as Sasha’s Wine Bar, Dressel’s Public House and Blueberry Hill. In addition to the printed guidebook, potential students can access an electronic version from their smartphones or tablets. “The e-book does not require an e-reader and can be accessed on any device,” Baumann says. “Once downloaded, the e-book can be opened in your ‘iBooks’ app, which is already on all Apple products.” Local restaurants, nightlife, things to do and more

are linked to their respective websites, making it easy to access even more information. “Another awesome feature of the e-book is that everything included in the e-book is linked to live Google Maps, so the students can use the e-book on the go and navigate their way around the city effortlessly,” Baumann adds. The guide, which was prepared by Guidester staff in cooperation with faculty and staff at the Olin School of Business, highlights the beauty and charm of the city, as well as lesser-known local gems, and is handy for more than just incoming students. “It is important for new students to know all the great places they can live, dine and frequent near campus,” he says. “The guidebook is also beneficial for people who already live in the city, as they may not be as familiar with the neighborhoods or housing options surrounding Washington University.” Guidester’s partnership with the Olin School of Business and similar future projects (study-abroad partnership opportunities are being explored) are an offshoot of the company’s core business, which provides custom travel guides based on users’ planned destinations, individual itineraries and interests. The customized guidebooks include information on destinationspecific customs, etiquette, safety and common phrases. Baumann says the most popular destinations requested are London, Rome, Paris, Ireland, Hawaii, New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. According to the company’s website, Baumann, a St. Louis native who spent two years abroad during graduate school, developed the idea based on his own desire to have specific travel information gathered in one place without having to search through pages of information he wouldn’t need for his particular travels. “Our mission is to provide an unforgettable travel experience, allowing travelers to save time, stress less and experience more,” Baumann says. “We aim to prepare travelers with custom guidebooks while supporting and advocating local culture.” The company is building a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise funds, says Baumann, that will “bring Guidester to a wider, more-global audience and further develop our service and product to include more features and capabilities to make it even easier for travelers to connect with the world and its culture and have a richer experience.” Guidester, 314-503-7979, guidester.com

RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE: Feature Story tHe gAtesWortH

Giving Back T never

goes out of style

he residents at The Gatesworth have the right idea: Being part of one’s community never ceases to be fulfilling. The retirement community has always recognized the bigger picture and continually expands its efforts outside of the gates. As resident Cynthia Kagan Frohlichstein is here to tell, volunteering at any age is well worth doing. The author of two children’s books, Frohlichstein first began her career as a travel journalist and local columnist. “I still actively promote the children’s books, The Perils of the Peanut Butter Kid and The Peanut Butter Birthday Party. Children’s books don’t go out of style,” she comments. Her second storybook tells the tale of a young boy who celebrates his birthday by asking friends to give back in lieu of presents – and it obviously has an underlying message. “I am a 41-year cancer survivor,” Frolichstein says. “When I sell my books, part of the proceeds go to different organizations, such as cancer

groups or children’s groups.” She stays an active participant of the community as VP of programming at the St. Louis Press Club. “I originally got involved when I was a journalist. I loved the organization because it was responsible for giving scholarships to deserving students,” Frohlichstein says. “I started The Press Club at The Gatesworth about four years ago […] where I get some of the people I know, from journalists and authors to political people and museum curators, to come and speak. It’s been a real pleasure for me and the people who live here.” In addition to a variety of programming, The Gatesworth treats residents to trips around the city. Frohlichstein often ties in those excursions through her diverse speakers with an in-depth look of their next destination. “[The speaker series] gives them more insight into the community. We had [St. Louis television and radio personality] Wendy Wiese last week. She’s a doll,” she says. “This gives residents different

perspectives by [showcasing] cultural [elements] and things that are on people’s minds.” Other speakers have included the soprano opera singer Gina Galati, doing a duet, and author/composer Claire Applewhite with comedian/magician Tim Sheiglitz. Her association has allowed Frohlichstein to create even more influential connections, which she introduces to residents. “I like so many of the people I have met. They’re productive, smart … interested in everything. It’s exhilarating to be part of the group. I keep telling [the Press Club] they can’t kick me out until I die,” Frohlichstein says. “We all need to have a little stimulation in our lives, and the Press Club is stimulating.” The Gatesworth plays a crucial part in her continued involvement by offering a venue and promoting the ongoing monthly speaker series. “I couldn’t do it without them,” she says. “And I guess, they couldn’t do it without me!”

Dinner ...

A selection of items from Scapegoat: pastrami melt, Boulevardier cocktail, Pandora cocktail, chicken wings, E’s tacos and G.O.A.T. sliders.

O

n June 14, Scape welcomed a brand-new sister concept in the Central West End with the opening of Scapegoat. As reported by Feast in April, Scapegoat is a tavern centered on old-school cocktails and chef-created small plates. The concept fills the space previously occupied by Crepes Etc., which closed in February 2016. Maryland Plaza Restaurant Group originally opened Scape and Crepes Etc. in 2007. With the advent of Scapegoat, they hope to fill a certain niche in the neighborhood. “What Scape American Bistro never had was a dedicated watering hole,” explains Geoff Dill, who serves as the director of operations for both Scape and Scapegoat. “We offer fine dining at Scape. For great beer

and casual fare, you can come to Scapegoat.” The 2,200-square-foot space that Scapegoat occupies features 50 to 60 seats and shares not only its kitchen, but also a spacious courtyard with the neighboring Scape. A redesign of the interior includes homages to its former identity, retaining some aspects such as its blackand-white tiled floors. SPACE Architecture + Design assisted with revamping the rest, drawing inspiration from New York’s Kingside Restaurant. The room combines modern and classic themes with the addition of subway tiles, dark walls and textured mirrors. Scape’s executive chef, Shimon Diamond, heads up the menu with sous chef Eric Garcia, while Trent Colquitt serves as bar manager on both sides.

By Mabel Suen “We like to use the analogy of Clark Kent and Superman. Shimon sources products carefully and cooks with Midwestern flair that’s a little fancy. He doesn’t normally get to take that Superman cape off and make everyday food,” Dill says. “With Scapegoat, we’re not trying to take ourselves too seriously. Everything we make is really simple yet technique-driven.” The chicken wings, for instance, are flavored with traditional buffalo sauce but are served uniquely Frenched. Another dish, the G.O.A.T. sliders, is a twist on a Scape classic: macadamia-nut chicken. The popular entrée gets a casual spin atop Hawaiian buns with pepper-jack cheese and house sauce. These are two items on the small food menu, which may expand over time. Later this summer, Scapegoat

intends to also keep a bit of the Crepes Etc. legacy alive by offering light brunch options. For now, the concept focuses heavily on an extensive drink menu. “The cocktail list plays on the acronym, G.O.A.T., which stands for greatest of all time,” says Colquitt. “We have a lot of classic cocktails. You’ll see a lot of Manhattans, whiskeys, gins and rums. We like to go really old school with that and do them the right way – very simple, very clean.” Classic cocktails include options such as the Dark and Stormy with Gosling’s rum, fresh lime, sugar and Fever Tree ginger beer. Guests can also select from a signature cocktail list with drinks named after famous scapegoats throughout history – each with a comical side note. The Monica, for instance, features Presidente Brandy, Applejack, sour and “Ken Starr’s approval.” Scapegoat also offers 18 wines by the glass as well as five local drafts inside, with three more available outdoors.

S‌ ummer in the city seemingly started a few weeks early this year, with day after day of 90-degree heat in June. To keep July hot with entertainment, though, several festivals are lined up on the local entertainment scene. The fourth annual LaBute New Theater Festival is scheduled to play at The Gaslight Theater, 358 N. Boyle, from July 8 through 31. Produced by St. Louis Actors’ Studio (STLAS), the festival will feature six new plays from among hundreds submitted to STLAS. Five plays selected from entries submitted by high school playwrights also will be performed. For consideration, STLAS artistic director William Roth says entries had to have no more than four characters and had to be crafted for the intimate performance space of The Gaslight Theater’s 18-square-foot stage. Plays also had to be previously unproduced, had to be one act only and had to run no more than 45 minutes. The six adult plays will be performed three apiece in the festival’s first set, which runs from July 8 to 17, and in its second set, which takes place from July 22 to 31. A world premiere titled Love, Inc. by the festival’s namesake, renowned playwright Neil LaBute (who is scheduled to attend the opening weekend), also will be staged throughout the event. First-set plays will be Fire Sans Matches by Jeff Carter of San Francisco, Winter Break by James Haigney of East Marion, New York, and Mark My Worms by Cary Pepper of San Francisco. Second-set selections will be American Outlaws by Adam Seidel of Chicago, Blue Balls by Willie Johnson of New York City and Show of Affection by Laurence Klavan of New York City. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets cost $30 to $35 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at 800-982-2787. The high school reading at 11 a.m. on July 9 will be free. Bilingual scripts from playwrights nationwide will be featured in Theatre Nuevo’s Orgullo: A Pride of One Acts from July 14 to 24. Orgullo (Spanish for “pride”) will focus on world-premiere works centered on Latin pride and identity. It will unfold at the 1900 Park Creative Space – 900 Park Ave. in the Lafayette Square neighborhood – from July 14 to 17 and July 21 to 24. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at artful.ly/theatre-nuevo. For details, visit theatrenuevo.com. Saint Louis University (SLU) is the new home for the St. Louis Cabaret Conference, which takes place from July 16 to 24. The conference will add a four-day workshop for gifted high school-age singers as part of the Summer at SLU program. It will use SLU’s fine and performing arts classrooms and performance spaces

to provide opportunities for SLU students who are involved. The conference partners with the nonprofit Cabaret Project of St. Louis to present this year’s St. Louis Cabaret Festival. Tim Schall, the festival’s executive and artistic director, has quite an itinerary scheduled for the fifth annual event, which runs from July 19 to 24 in Grand Center. Included in the lineup of notable cabaret acts will be the world premiere of a show commissioned by the festival featuring legendary song stylist Marilyn Maye and the incomparable Ann Hampton Calloway. Titled Marilyn and Her Piano Men, the show on July 21 at The Sheldon Concert Hall features two of the queens of cabaret joined onstage by not one but two pianists, namely Billy Stritch and Tedd Firth. “May I humbly say,” says Schall, “it is one of the mostanticipated musical performances this year in St. Louis?” Because Maye and Calloway have never performed a full show together, it should be quite an event, indeed. The festival also will feature cabaret star Faith Prince and her accompanist, pianist Jason Graae, in The Prince and the Showboy at the Sheldon on July 20 and Tony DeSare and Trio in From Sinatra to Prince at the Sheldon on July 22. The Next Generation on July 19 at The Stage at KDHX showcases high school singers, Professional Track at The Stage at KDHX on July 23 features eight selected singers, and the final Showcase Celebration on July 24 at Jazz at the Bistro spotlights more than 20 cabaret artists from throughout the country. Tickets for all of the cabaret shows are available at MetroTix or by calling 314-534-1111. Prices range from $25 to $110, depending on the event. To learn more, visit thecabaretproject.org.

Ready Readers

Monstrous Fun

S

ummer’s a busy season. Between shuttling kids here and there, little time remains for nonessential activities – but don’t forget to schedule a weekly trip to the library! Educational development happens throughout the year, and keeping children reading can combat summer academic amnesia. Becoming engrossed in a story and characters sparks reading purely for pleasure, which feeds kids’ desire to read even more – leading to scholastic achievement in school. Ready Readers’ volunteers report that preschool favorites among creators include Ed Emberley and Maurice Sendak. Both author/illustrators offer multiple titles to enjoy, and children across ages and cultures like the sillyscary nature of their stories. For example, Emberley’s Go Away, Big Green Monster! presents a nonthreatening opportunity for children to recognize their fears and take control. In the book, a series of die-cut pages add different features of the colorful monster until his whole face is revealed. Then, just as

simply, children can order the creature’s features to “Go away … and don’t come back until I say so!” Children aged 2 and 3 years old should enjoy identifying colors and comparing their body parts to those of the monster. Children aged 4 and 5, meanwhile, may be drawn into conversation about their own fears, allowing families to develop plans for expelling unwanted imaginary beasts. And children of all ages should relish the sparkling, starkly colored cover and revel in the empowering repeated response of “Go away … !” Other books by Emberley include Nighty Night Little Green Monster and Glad Monster, Sad Monster.

By Sheila Oliveri Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, over time, has become a modern classic. In it, for misbehavior, Max – a boy in a wolf suit who makes mischief “of one kind and another” – earns the punishment of being sent to his room, where he imagines a jungle growing. He enters the make-believe world and sails far away to a land “where the wild things are.” After becoming their king, Max and the creatures there participate in wild, rowdy games until Max realizes (to the wild things’ despair) that he misses his home. This book reveals more of its magic with each new reading. Sendak’s illustrations portray an array of trusting beasts whose innocent (yet unruly) behavior correlates with that of the mischievous Max. In the book, the quantities of text and illustrations wax and wane from beginning to end, aptly mirroring a child’s emotional process. Similarly, Max’s need to be king mirrors his need for control over the chaos within himself. And heartwarmingly, triggering his decision to return home is the aroma of his mother’s cooking, a sign of her love. At Ready Readers, we know that “Kids Who Read Succeed!” Reading aloud daily with your child provides a strong foundation for early literacy.

SERIES

ST. LOUIS

By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos courtesy of FOCUS St. Louis

Over the course of a five-week series, LN is profiling the local organizations recently announced as FOCUS St. Louis’ 2016 What’s Right With the Region! honorees. This week, we’re highlighting those honored in the ImpROvIng RaCIal EqUalIty & SOCIal JUStICE category.

W

hile St. Louis has attracted heightened attention around issues of race and inequality during the past two years, these challenges scarcely qualify as new. For the past 19 years, FOCUS St. Louis has been recognizing individuals, organizations and initiatives making a difference in confronting racism and discrimination and improving equality for all in our region. “Issues around race, discrimination and inequality often have deep roots, which can make addressing them challenging and uncomfortable,” says Becky Rasmussen, director of marketing and communications for the organization (whose website dubs it “the region’s premier leadership organization”). “This is all the more reason that these honorees deserve to be recognized for their courage and commitment in the face of this discomfort.” Five months ago, FOCUS St. Louis announced four honorees apiece in five categories: Demonstrating Innovative Solutions, Fostering Regional Cooperation, Improving Racial Equality and Social Justice, Promoting

Stronger Communities and Responding to Community Needs and Entrepreneurs. This installment, the third of a five-part series that will continue almost to the end of July, spotlights the four honorees in the Improving Racial Equality and Social Justice category: ArchCity Defenders, City Garden Montessori School, James Clark and Amy Hunter. The category’s honorees have shown a strong commitment to promoting diversity, access, inclusion and opportunity for all. “Our final 20 honorees in the five categories are selected by a committee, which includes FOCUS alumni and community leaders,” Rasmussen explains. “This year, we had 32 individuals who volunteered their time as judges.” (In an aside, Rasmussen urges anyone interested in being a future judge to contact FOCUS St. Louis.) Judges, Rasmussen continues, “read through all the nominations and score each based on factors such as how well [a given nominee] fits the category, alignment with FOCUS values, meaningful impact on the community, effectiveness, uniqueness, etc.” The top four in each category, she says, then receive

recognition as What’s Right With the Region! honorees. In that respect, FOCUS St. Louis this year is saluting a nonprofit corporation, an educational institution and two individuals for their pursuit of equality and justice regardless of race, creed or any other factor: ArchCity Defenders (archcitydefenders.org) As noted in its nomination, this firm was founded in 2009 “to fill a gap in indigent legal services that has existed for years, with the primary objective of removing the legal obstacles that prevent the poor and homeless from accessing the services they need to obtain or maintain housing, jobs and treatment.” Beyond protecting individuals, the firm’s executive director, Thomas Harvey, shares that it “seeks to promote justice and bring about systemic change on behalf of the poor and communities of color directly impacted by the abuses of the legal system.” According to its website, the firm’s holistic defense “combines zealous advocacy with an understanding that for most poor people charged with a crime, the criminal case is not the only issue they struggle with.” The firm also lists one of its goals as “educating the

community it serves about their legal rights” – because as an old saying goes, knowledge is power. City Garden Montessori School (citygardenschool. org) This neighborhood preschool and K-8 charter school serves the Botanical Heights, Forest Park Southeast, Shaw, Southwest Garden and Tiffany neighborhoods in St. Louis. “The charter school was founded by a set of parents who were determined to create a diverse community school that provides an excellent education to children of all backgrounds and has since become one of the most-integrated school communities in the city,” explains executive director Christie Huck. In addition, City Garden Montessori School lists as its mission “to cultivate compassionate and critically thinking young people who will make a difference in the world, as well as strengthening the communities it serves.” James Clark “For more than two decades,” the nomination for this honoree states, “James Clark has used his leadership skills to strengthen the St. Louis region and is regarded as a leading voice in America on the issues of neighborhood stabilization and

community organizing.” Clark serves as vice president of community outreach for Better Family Life, which, according to its website, strives to “establish social, cultural, artistic, youth, economic, housing and educational programs that help promote positive and innovative changes in the lives of individuals and their families.” In that capacity, Clark has launched a number of programs, including the Neighborhood Alliance, Pulpit to Porches, the Next Chapter Violence Intervention Project and the St. Louis Metropolitan Area Amnesty Project, as well as public awareness campaigns like the “Put Down the Pistol” initiative. Amy Hunter During an earlier awards presentation, it was noted that Amy Hunter “has spent her life working for gender and racial equality. She joined the YWCA Metro St. Louis in 2008 as the organization’s first director of racial justice, and her trainings have reached a multitude of audiences, from teachers to health care workers to law enforcement to corporations.” Since August 2014, Hunter has scarcely grown any less busy. “Following the events in Ferguson, demand for her programs exploded,” the nomination

for her notes, “and she expanded her free discussion groups to educate hundreds of St. Louisans hungry for understanding and healing.” Rasmussen notes that since Hunter’s FOCUS St. Louis recognition, St. Louis Children’s Hospital – one of the region’s most esteemed and cherished medical institutions – named her its manager of diversity and inclusion. To recognize these four honorees, their eight predecessors and eight successors, and FOCUS St. Louis’ 2016 Leadership Award recipient – Dr. Jason Q. Purnell of Washington University in St. Louis – the organization hosted a What’s Right With the Region! awards celebration two months back at The Sheldon Concert Hall. According to a release from the organization, all proceeds from the event “support the work of FOCUS St. Louis in developing leadership and building strong civic capacity.” FOCUS St. Louis, 815 Olive St., #110, St. Louis, 314-622-1250, focus-stl.org
