TEST-DRIVING THE 2017 MASERATI LEVANTE S Writer/photographer Ryan Scott, LN’s gearsand-gas go-to guy, sings the praises of la dolce vita embodied so strikingly in the 2017 Maserati Levante S, praising that SUV for its look, its feel and the exclusivity of its “Italian individualism.”
On the cover 10 Pink Magnolia carries the crushworthy fashions of Lilly Pulitzer. The Signature Store has served generations of Lilly lovers, as seen on the front cover: Leslie Kotiza models the American Resort Wear brand, alongside her daughter, Kendall Mahoney, and grandchildren (Avery, Greta and Leland). EDITOR FOR CHRISTMAS ONE YEAR MY PARENTS GIFTED ME A PURPLE butterfly chair. Although it wasn’t a high-quality piece of furniture, I adored it, especially during my teen years. In the corner of my room, I would constantly pile it with pillows and comfy blankets, then snuggle up with a good book – creating my own little reading nook. In this week’s Abode section, LN contributing writer Julia Cain shares the story of Forsyth, a local company that reupholsters vintage and antique furniture in high-quality animal hides. Starting on page 26, Cain not only shares the inspiration behind Forsyth giving old pieces new life but also showcases beautifully reupholstered pieces, including an egg chair that slightly resembles the shape of my beloved butterfly chair – and reminds me how necessary a cozy reading nook is, no matter your age. I hope you enjoy exploring the creative works of Forsyth as much as I did. Also, in this week’s Style section, make sure to check out LN fashionista Katie Yeadon’s streetsavvy styles. Starting on page 44, Yeadon proves that summer looks don’t always have to include bright colors and floral prints. All the best,
Alecia Humphreys

illy pulitzer, an American resort Wear brand, cultivates a lifestyle, still proving it inspires today as much as it did when first hitting the fashion scene. “Created in the late 1950s, lilly pulitzer [has] a heritage and aesthetic based on the palm beach resort lifestyle,” lori Ann malugen, owner of pink magnolia, says. “it is unique among women’s brands because of its multigenerational appeal. The ‘lilly Girl’ lifecycle begins with infants and continues through grandmothers.” pink magnolia is a signature store that specializes in the brand. “signature stores are independently owned and operated, and excel in the area of customer service,” she explains. “pink magnolia carries 100 percent lilly pulitzer women’s apparel, offering almost every style made in each of the four seasons, including accessories, gift and girls’ apparel.” The boutique also fosters a community for lilly fans. “[i’m] grateful to the community for their continued support,” malugen says. “i’ve always believed in giving back. pink magnolia supports community charities and organizations.” malugen’s team goes above and beyond to show appreciation for customers. “our staff will call customers when new product arrives, special order an item and gift-wrap free of charge, as well as offer hassle-free returns from lillypulitzer.com and bridal party savings,” malugen states. “The store has a loyalty points reward program to continue thanking its customers. This program is getting updated and becoming even better! pink magnolia offers an excellent customer service experience. We assist with customer history, regarding sizes, previous purchases, et cetera – and
above all, we always share our love for this unique brand.” The impact on customers is perhaps most evident in one of pink magnolia’s top customers, leslie Kotiza. “maybe i was born to be a merchant; maybe it was fate,” Kotiza says. “i [only] know this for sure: i loved retail from the beginning. i have worked and been a customer at pink magnolia for 10 years – and every time i walk in, it is like coming home. lori Ann and the rest of her staff are like family, and we pride ourselves on treating customers in the same way.” today, she and her entire family, including her daughter and three grandchildren, sport the lilly line (as seen below). “Composed of women of all ages, the pink magnolia staff all share the same love of the brand,” malugen states. “our staff is knowledgeable and appreciates the history and uniqueness of the brand. pink magnolia is a lilly-loving family – and the customers can see, hear and feel that genuineness in the store.”

You know, the meaning of Care and Counseling – the meaning of the work we do and the mission of the work – [it] really touches me. We provide professional licensed counselors to individuals in need for everything from premarital counseling to severe depression. Our therapists provide those services thanks to the generosity of our supporters and donors, especially tonight. They are able to provide those services with a sliding scale. And that’s something not everybody can do.

Burns recovered By Amanda Dahl
WHAT/WHEN/WHERE 5th Anniversary More Than a Fashion Show sept. 7 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. neiman marcus st. Louis at plaza Frontenac
mIssION
Burns Recovered sets out to assist survivors by supporting medical facilities, educating the public and more. “One of the things burn survivors struggle with is getting back to a level where they feel more themselves,” executive director Lynn Huelsmann shares. “Our goal is to see every survivor live life to the fullest – without fear, limitation or insecurity.”
HIsTORy
cOmmuNITy ImPAcT
Formed in 1983 by a group of burn survivors, alongside members of the mercy medical center’s burn care team, Burns recovered sought rehabilitation for survivors at a level more than skin-deep. one of the significant ways the nonprofit organization seeks to heal is by building confidence in young survivors through a camp, where children can feel comfortable in their own skin.
Huelsmann explains the most important part of helping survivors to rehabilitate after a severe burn: “The first, and most urgent, need for burn survivors is peer support. immediately after a burn, survivors are trying to wrap their minds around not just the physical trauma but also the mental challenge. other survivors go to the burn unit to offer support as co-survivors. This gives an immediate level of hope, showing there is definitely life after injury.” Burns recovered also educates the community on burn prevention. every year, the organization teams up with neiman marcus at plaza Frontenac to host a fashion event unlike any other. “neiman marcus puts on a world-class fashion show – something you would find in paris or new York – with campers
“The woman who started the Burns recovered camp is a friend of mine,” sheri sherman, event cochair of the upcoming more Than a Fashion show, says. “Her husband was severely burned when their car blew up in their driveway. she developed this camp – and not one child has to pay for it. They get to experience first-time friendships.” They don’t have to be afraid to go to the public pool.” Funds raised through events, such as the upcoming fashion show with neiman marcus (see sidebar), go to essentials for campers, scholarships for higher education and adventures throughout the year. “This year is our 21st camp for youth, ages 6 to 17, who have survived a severe burn injury,” executive director Lynn Huelsmann says. “over 21 years, we’ve helped more than 1,000 kids. many of them have moved on to become counselors and stayed engaged in the community.”
22
participating,” sherman shares. “Kids of various ages speak about their camp experiences. people are extremely moved by their words and the truly lifechanging effects of the camp. You likely won’t see a dry eye in the house.” Kate duryea, event co-chair, looks forward to a fun evening with friends. “i was drawn to this organization because of the women who organized it and what it does for the children in our community,” she says. “people can look forward to a great evening that touches your heart.” Huelsmann believes neiman marcus is the perfect partner because the company recognizes beauty both inside and out. “Your external being is your wrapping paper, and as people get to know you, they see the gift underneath,” she says. “A medical professional will tell you a burn injury is one of the most difficult, painful things to overcome emotionally, physically and mentally. to overcome these shocking injuries takes courage, bravery and resilience – and we [at Burns recovered] play a small role in that process, if we can. it is a privilege to serve such incredible people.”

She had just cofounded Forsyth (with fellow creatives John O’Hara and Maggie Genovese, her sister), a local company that was created to sell high-end zebra-hide rugs and handcrafted pillows. “Then one day, we were shopping around for antiques and spotted this brilliant 19th-century settee that desperately needed a new life, needed new upholstery,” Genovese says. “We decided to reupholster it in zebra.” The nontraditional choice was a success, turning out better than the team had envisioned. “Then more furniture was bought, from all periods – midcentury Milo Baughman swivel chairs, vintage Arne Jacobsen Egg Chairs, George II walnut dining chairs, vintage farmhouse benches and so forth,” Genovese says. “We found that our customer was looking for a unique piece for his or her home – something that no one else has, a one-of-a-kind work of art.” And so a new focus of Forsyth was born. While the business continues to offer rugs and pillows, its furniture sets it apart. There’s the 18th-century G. Jacob Mahogany & Cane Bergere Swivel Chair in Zebra Hide, with its heavily patterned cushion if you prefer the traditional look, or the Morrison & Hannah for Knoll Chair and Ottoman in Black and White Brazilian Cowhide, a mix of midcentury modern and Wild West chic. Forsyth has benches, dining chair sets and lounge chairs – even miniatures with custom hide cushions – available for the right buyer. Of all the masterpieces, the pair of Arne Jacobsen Egg Chairs stands out to Genovese. “The Egg Chair is a pretty iconic design to begin with, but we took it to another level,” she says, noting the interior foam needed full repair. The team went with zebra-hide interior upholstery and a leather exterior, then listed both on the Forsyth website and luxury antique site 1stdibs.com. “The day after we uploaded the Egg Chairs to our 1stdibs store, we got a call from a famous actor – I won’t say who!” Genovese says. “He ended up only wanting one, and we didn’t want to split the pair up, so we told him no. I still can’t believe we did that.” The pair (priced near the high end of the low five figures) later sold to the founder of GoPro, the self-styled maker of the “world’s most versatile cameras.” Although often thought of for accessories, hides offer several perks to furniture, Genovese explains. “Hide is a beautiful, natural and incredibly durable material – it adds texture, warmth and a ‘cool factor’ you don’t get with fabric,” she says. “It’s not

easy to upholster in hide though; it’s very thick … Our master upholsterers are incredible craftsmen.” Genovese explains Forsyth works with a limited number of tanneries, noting one in South Africa for sustainable zebra hides and a few in Brazil for cow. “These culling programs help keep the zebra population within reasonable numbers,” she says. “All zebra hides are inspected by U.S. Customs and U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife upon import into the United States … The cowhides are byproducts of the beef industry.” When it comes to finding the vintage pieces, Genovese often stays close to home. “St. Louis is such a treasure trove for finding incredible antique and vintage pieces,” she says. “We have an unbelievable selection of beautiful vintage pieces right here in River City. Why make new [furniture] when these amazing pieces just need a new life?” She says her team enjoys recycling these treasures from yesteryear, and outside of St. Louis, they find items from auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s Auctions & Private Sales and Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. Once the right piece has been found, it’s time to bring it to Forsyth’s Creve Coeur studio and select a hide. “We have many to choose from when it comes time to select the perfect hide for a piece, which makes it a little easier but also harder sometimes, too,” says
Genovese, noting each hide is unique in color and pattern. After the material is selected, the piece heads to the upholstery team. She says the design process is collaborative, and the team works to stay on par with the original if the piece is “designer.” “With most of the pieces, our upholstery team goes ‘down to the bones’ and restores from the inside out,” Genovese says. “These chairs and sofas and ottomans are decades or hundreds of years old. Most of, if not all, the insides need to be replaced. When you’re purchasing a Forsyth piece, you’re purchasing a completely restored chair or sofa – we don’t just cover the old foam with our hides.” Wishing your antiques had the artistic edge of a Forsyth piece? Never fear – custom orders are available. Forsyth, showroom open by appointment, 10845 Baur Blvd., St. Louis, 314-422-1118, forsythart.com

Creating Hummingbird Havens
T
he great hummingbird migration came early this year. I thought I’d be ready by putting out my feeders in early April – but the first of the tiny flying gems visited within just 30 minutes. Hummingbirds’ great memories allow them to return to known feeding stations like mine with relative ease, and ruby-throated hummingbirds generally populate Missouri, though other species sometimes pass through. Ferociously territorial about feeders, they tend to “zoom” rivals, often startling nearby humans. With females currently nesting for their second clutch, though, the little gems can use extra support from us and our gardens. Maximizing that support basically involves adding suitable flowers to pots and borders, and placing similarly suitable feeders in many locations. First, choose the best plants for a hummingbird garden. Hummingbirds burn a lot of calories to keep themselves aloft, so they feed constantly. Their diet includes protein from small insects (aphids, gnats and midges, say) and sugar from natural sources or garden feeders. Bright colors – specifically red, orange and pink – attract hummingbirds. Red, odorless flowers and feeders look like neon signs to them, while being

barely bothered by most insects. Because bees, like most other insects, suffer from red-green colorblindness, the red flowers that stand out to hummingbirds blend into the background for them. However, fragrance attracts bees, and spillage on a feeder’s outside, if discovered, may prompt swarming. To prevent this, rinse the outside of a feeder before rehanging it, and select new feeders with bee-proof openings. Three of the best red flowers for hummingbirds are cultivated monardas: ‘Cambridge Scarlet,’ ‘Jacob Cline’ and ‘Fireball.’ Also, one of my favorite natives, the royal catchfly (Silene regia), grows in scarlet, waist-high patches, likely swarming with pollinators, in midsummer along Missouri roadsides and in old prairie remnants. At the end of the avian buffet, put a big splash of red salvias for a roadside rest stop that hummingbirds should find irresistable. Additional attractions for hummingbirds include: Woody plants and vines like red buckeye, clethra, native honeysuckle, trumpet creeper and cross vine. Annual vines – the Ipomoea sisters – cypress vine, red morninglory, their hybrid (called the cardinal climber) and the multicolored Spanish flag. Prairie plants such as Indian paintbrush, penstemon, jewelweed, Indian pinks, liatris and lobelia.
Annuals including petunia, nicotiana, snapdragon, zinnia, pentas, cuphea and hyssop. Perennial borders like lilies, columbine, phlomis and mint. Pot plants like mandevilla, fuchsia, abutilon, hibiscus and pineapple sage. Otherwise, feed hummingbirds sagely and safely. When selecting new feeders, seek durable, dishwashersafe models with built-in ant moats, bee-proof ports, perch rims, easy-fill wide mouths and replacement parts. To keep feeders safe from larger animals like raccoons (which can wreak absolute havoc on them), use pot pulleys to raise feeders out of reach without spillage. Also, stop using red dye. Hummingbirds don’t care, and reports show it may actually harm them. Plain sugar solution and a cup of sugar mixed with four cups of boiling water work fine as long as changed often and, when unused, refrigerated. Fermented sugar makes alcohol, which can hurt tiny livers, so if you can’t run feeders through the dishwasher, soak them weekly in a solution of a quarter cup of bleach per gallon of water. Hummingbirds also need a water source and like flat stones placed in a bird bath to create spots with very shallow water. With clean water accompanying your flowers and feeders, though, your garden soon should be zooming with colorful aerial acrobats.

T
he Laura McCarthy Real Estate team is constantly striving to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and the real estate business. With a recently remodeled office, the company’s agents are working together in a more collaborative space, rather than in isolated rooms. Kathy Beilein, the company’s president, noted that the brick-and-mortar design the company previously had became obsolete. “It was built giving agents individual space where they could write contracts, etc.,” she says. “But it’s morphed into agents wanting collaborative space where they can work together. It’s all about having a computer and all of the technology at their fingertips through the process.” Since the paperwork involved in buying or selling a home has all become digital, this new technologyfocused remodel makes the process easier for both the agent and the buyer/seller. Beilein says more desks have been added, along with two large worktables where employees and clients can spread out. If, however, an agent needs to make a private phone call or meet with a client, there are also seven private rooms. “The attitude has shifted to being more about collaboration over isolation,” she says. “Agents want to have a space where they can hear what’s going on and brainstorm about properties.
30
“We used a local architect for the basic plans and had a space designer out of New York finalize the rest,” Beilein continues. “She had really good ideas and had her finger on the pulse of what the office of 2020 looks like instead of 2010. We’re ahead of the game with what she helped us do.” Being ahead of the game is important in a real estate market that’s been tight lately. Beilein says though the first quarter was quick-moving this year, the market is suffering from having supply in the right price range or not having the right type of home the buyer is looking for. She says she has seen many buyers looking for ranch houses and properties under $400,000. “That price range is what’s been driving the market,” she says. “The first-time buyer market is going crazy, too. It’s been stronger than I’ve seen in seven or eight years.” At Laura McCarthy, Beilein says staff members are “very cognizant” of the kind of agent they align

themselves with and, because of that, have a team that’s informed, savvy, responsive and hardworking. “We have the best agents in town,” she says. “You want someone who is going to be there for you and give you the answers or be able to get them for you. Those are the kind of people we have here at Laura McCarthy.” Laura McCarthy Real Estate, 29 The Boulevard, St. Louis, 314-725-5100, lauramccarthy.com

BEAUTY BUZZ
Fighting Frizz
By Kimmie Gotch
D
espite the time invested in it, the gorgeous, sleek do of a “good hair day” can fast fall victim to St. Louis’ legendary summer humidity, making it go from fab to frizz in no time flat. So whether in the Lou or on a tropical getaway, ladies, avoid frizzy hair by following these steps for creating and keeping tamed tresses: Rinse with cold water. Although this may sound unpleasant, washing out conditioner with cold water helps keep frizz at bay. On a humid day, this also may feel really refreshing. Either way, your frizz-free hair will benefit. Condition cunningly. After washing your hair, use a leave-in conditioner that doubles as a heat protectant. Such a product acts as a sealant, helping to tame frizz. Even if your hair doesn’t necessarily frizz instantly, this step should help keep frizz at bay throughout the day. Lay off the heat. Let your hair air-dry unless absolutely necessary. Even in dire necessity, though, make sure your hair’s air-dried about 80 percent before using a dryer on its lowest setting. The less heat exposure, the better – you want to avoid overly drying your do.
Use hair oil. After completely drying and styling your locks, add hair oil, which both increases shine and controls frizz. Rub the oil between your hands before applying it lightly from the scalp to the ends. Make sure not to use too much, though, to avoid looking greasy. Alternatively, rock those natural curls!
Sometimes the best solution to combatting frizz involves showcasing hair’s natural wave or curl. Straightening naturally curly hair on a humid day can sometimes cause frizz. Humidity can actually help natural hair look better, ladies – so don’t fear embracing your beautiful do “as is”!

Women of the World,

he right-hand ring grew as a fashion statement that symbolized independence and growing spending power for women in the early 2000s. Today, it still proves a significant style choice – and in St. Louis, Genovese Jewelers has cornered the market on it. “About 15 years ago, we saw this big shift from women receiving jewelry as a traditional gift given by their husbands for an anniversary or birthday to women buying jewelry for themselves,” president Joe Genovese says. “We had to become fashion-forward. With the majority of women working, especially since that surge 20 years ago, they no longer have to ask permission from their husbands to purchase jewelry. They make the money now to buy it themselves.” Right-hand rings at Genovese are reasonably priced, too – anywhere from $300 to $3,000. The

true value, though, comes with the design. “What came into style back then is still [relevant] today: an ornate, open design, with filigree and width,” Genovese describes. “A right-hand ring can’t be bread-and-butter, no three-stone diamond ring. It has to be unique and with a little bling. Typically, right-hand rings are made of white diamonds. In the past few years, we’ve done a tremendous amount with yellow and rose gold as well.” Genovese Jewelers, one of the largest jewelers in the country, has a history of innovative design and an incomparable selection. Genovese believes the difference in the company’s service is evident from the moment you first walk in the store. “A core behavior of every salesperson is to greet [customers] quickly and warmly, and offer a beverage, whether it be a beer, wine, Champagne or soft drink,” he says. “We encourage the customer to look around. Once seated, we pull out all the pieces related to what they

are looking for, so they can try them on. In those rare occasions when one doesn’t look good on, we’re honest and tell them.” That kind of transparency throughout the process, from sketch to computer-edited and wax design to finished product, ensures clients get exactly what they want. “We do a rough drawing [based on] what they want, like something a 3-year-old drew, and it always amazes them that we create this beautiful piece of jewelry based off of this terrible picture,” Genovese says. “The process can go anywhere from a week to three weeks. You get something of tremendous value for less money than you can find anywhere else in the states or overseas – and it’s manufactured right here in St. Louis.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

ohn Ulett’s story could have been much different. Instead of being the St. Louis Cardinals’ announcer, “Professor Uman” on the online TV program Cardinals Kids and KSHE 95’s iconic “U-Man,” he easily could have been swept away by the once-meaner streets of St. Louis’ South Side, where he grew up. Instead, as it’s turned out, Ulett has not one, but three of the best gigs in town. Ulett graces the field before Cardinals games, announcing pregame festivities, ceremonial first pitches and school choirs prepared to sing the national anthem. When the game begins, it’s up to the booth high above home plate. “Now batting for the Cardinals, No. 4, catcher Yadier Molina,” booms Ulett’s familiar voice through the stadium. Ulett has been part of Cardinals Nation for 33 seasons. He’s so much a part of the team that even he has championship rings. “When they first told me I was getting a ring, I said to myself, ‘I can’t believe it,’” Ulett says. “’Cause I grew up in the shadows of Busch Stadium. To actually get a World Series ring from the same team that had [Lou] Brock and [Bob] Gibson and [Stan] Musial, it’s a pretty stunning turn of events for me.” A few blocks away, in the studios of KSHE, Ulett is now in his 41st year. He first took to the air there when he was just 19 years old – with the legendary rock station still in its infancy. “I actually turned down the job three times,” Ulett says. “One time I told them that my mom wouldn’t want me to work there because the station had a drug image.” His mom, though, finally let him take the job. Since then, no one else has been such a consistent presence on St. Louis airwaves. Ulett just turned 60, but says he’s still working to keep up his game. “Every time I open the microphone, it’s like being at the plate, and they’re throwing the fastball,” he says. “You’re either going to strike out or get a hit. You don’t want to go on the air and make a fool of yourself.” Ulett’s story actually started with his grandfather, who immigrated from Lebanon and settled in the area of 18th and Park, where other Lebanese newcomers made their homes near St. Raymond’s Maronite Cathedral. He married a St. Louis Lebanese girl, and they had a daughter who married an Italian boy, soon starting a family. They all lived together in the same house where Ulett and his brother, Jim, were born and raised. In 1957, about the same time Ulett was born, the Darst-Webbe housing project was built. Like all high-rise projects of that era, it was eventually doomed by the concentration of poverty and crime – and ultimately demolished. But in the ’60s and ’70s, the people of St. Raymond’s and Darst-Webbe were uncomfortable neighbors. Ulett says he experienced more than his share of violent crime. “There was a motorcycle gang that was involved in a lot of shootings; the racial issue was boiling over,” he says. “My grandparents were beaten and mugged downstairs from us in our house, and my father was robbed at knife point. I was robbed at knife point.” Amazed by his experiences, I ask how he puts it all in perspective – from witnessing so much horror to achieving so much success. “When you put it in those words, I kind of get choked up thinking about it,” he says – a long, emotional pause ensuing. “My family, my grandparents – they were saints. It makes me understand people who aren’t lucky enough to have good parents and grandparents who were great role models who showed us how to deal with trouble in life. I can’t imagine not having that kind of compass, and I hope I

Image Concerns
K
By Dr. Russell Hyken
ids receive mixed messages from a very early age about what’s attractive. In turn, they form their own opinions – some ultimately going to great lengths to achieve their ideal look. The desire to be slim has no age minimum. As early as first grade, many students become concerned with weight and appearance. The National Eating Disorder Association reports that 80 percent of 10-year-old girls have dieted and that nearly 60 percent of all children desire to be thinner. The desire for the perfect body also no longer remains “a girl thing.” Boys, too, are falling prey to unrealistic body ideals as they see celebrity six-packs, muscular video game characters and amped-up athletes. How children feel, however, often derives in part of in whole from the company they keep. Family and friends continuously comment about appearance from the day they’re born. Parents, though, exert a bigger influence on their children’s personal perceptions than any other source. Although it may seem otherwise, kids pay attention to mom and dad. Parents, if you frequently fret about your weight, your stomach and your demanding workout, your kids will also worry about their weights, their stomachs and their exercise habits. Similarly, if you constantly eat fat-free foods and skip meals to reduce calories, your children will develop these same by-and-large unhealthy habits. Why? Because kids subconsciously mimic adult behaviors. One of the best ways for a parent to promote a positive body image and reduce weight worries involves encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Continually urge your children to move, parents – send them outside to play with neighborhood kids, have them join sports teams or tell them to walk the dog. Also, make sure to continually plan active family outings such as riding bikes, going hiking or taking ski vacations, which also make great ways to create lifelong memories. Helping children develop healthy habits will set them on an emotionally and physically prosperous path. Despite a parent’s best efforts, though, many children do excessively worry about body image. Sometimes even the best parental words of wisdom fail to soothe a struggling child. If your child focuses constantly on physical appearance, excessively diets or continually compares himself or herself to others, he or she may need to talk to a professional. Being fit doesn’t mean being thin, and being thin doesn’t mean being happy. Finding balance remains integral to a healthy relationship between mind and body.

Montgomery Takes Title Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association McKenna Montgomery returned to tournament golf play after a yearlong absence, showing she can still manage a golf course. Montgomery, a Chesterfield native, captured the 25th Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur title (her first ever) with a 6-over-150 at Sunset Hills Country Club. “It was my first tournament since high school, so I was just excited to play in a tournament again and compete,” says Montgomery, who graduated from Westminster Christian Academy and will be a sophomore this fall at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. “My goal was just to get the best score I could – I wasn’t worried about where I would place.” Montgomery won by two strokes. Kayla Eckelkamp,
of Washington and a Maryville University graduate, shot a 74 in the second round to finish behind Montgomery with a 152.
Missouri Amateur Championship Defending champ Sam Migdal fell short this year, unable to remain the state champion. Brad Nurski of St. Joseph defeated Migdal 2-up to earn his second Missouri Amateur Championship. Accomplishing the feat on his home course made winning the six-day event even sweeter. “I get to do it at home in front of everybody. I get to do it in front of my family, my dad, my wife, my kids, all my friends and my buddies,” Nurski says. Migdal tipped his cap to Nurski. “I know he’s a good player and a good match-play player,” Migdal says. “If I could play my game, I felt like I could take it to 18, and I did. A couple putts didn’t drop, and I thought that was the difference.”
U.S. Senior Open St. Louis golfer Jay Williamson, also known as Justin Arch Williamson IV, turned 50 in February, allowing him to begin his career as a senior player. Earlier in his career, Williamson played on the PGA Tour among other tours.
By Warren Mayes
Recently Williamson played in his first U.S. Senior Open Championship, earning a spot after winning a playoff in the Senior Open Qualifier at Glen Echo Country Club. He bested PGA Tour player Jay Delsing for the berth. Williamson missed the cut in the 38th annual Senior Open at the 6,815-yard, par-70 Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts. He finished at 11-over with a 151 on rounds of 76-75.
U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship The 69th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta will be seen on FS1 for the Round of 16 and semifinal coverage on July 27 and 28, respectively, both from 3 to 5 p.m. each day. The championship match on July 29 will be broadcast from 1 to 3 p.m. Last year, Eun Jeong Seong, of the Republic of Korea, became the first player in 45 years to successfully defend her title with a 4-and-2 victory over 2016 USA Curtis Cup competitor Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. This will be just the second time the junior girls’ tournament has been held in Missouri. The last time was 1972, and it was played at the Jefferson City Country Club, with Nancy Lopez winning.

Maintaining the status quo during divorce St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C
With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced. But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by
state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and parenting time determination.
Thus, parties who think an affair will have no effect whatsoever are potentially missing the mark. It is true that many judges will give little weight to an affair (even in states that allow it to be considered). At the same time, an affair is not completely irrelevant in every case. In some cases, an affair can ultimately impact the result of the case. This is especially true when the affair had a financial impact on the marital estate. test drive: 2017 Maserati Levante S
Italian Where It Matters Story and photos by Ryan Scott

the maserati Levante s is a sharp and thoroughLy rewarding visuaL and tactiLe suv driving experience that far outpaces its competitors.
M
ost people associate sport utility vehicles primarily with the “utility” component – how well a voluminous pile of kids’ soccer gear or inflatable pool toys fit in the rear. But to the pleasure of drivers hoping for a less soul-sucking experience, more focus is going to the “sport” angle. In 1999, BMW owned the sporting SUV space with the X5 – and then came the Porsche Cayenne in 2002 and later the Porsche Macan in 2014. Jaguar got in the game with the F-Pace in 2016, and even Lamborghini has a hyper-SUV planned for the near future. All this focus on making family hauling fun wouldn’t be happening if sales numbers weren’t there, but the market was still missing an SUV with Italian individualism. Maserati recognized the trend some time ago. In fact, the Levante has numbered among the most torturously teased and talked about new products in some time. In 2011, the idea began as the Kubang concept, which appears very similar to the car seen here. However, back then, all the proposed details differed. Maserati being a cog in the Fiat/Chrysler wheel, it was thought the new SUV would be based on the Grand Cherokee platform. Thank the gods of memorable driving experiences that that didn’t happen.
We ended up with something much more focused on that idea of putting “sport” back into the SUV. The Levante shares a platform with the Maserati Ghibli, which I reviewed in the January 20 Ladue News. Much more aluminum goes into the bodywork and suspension of the Levante than that of the Ghibli, which keeps added mass to a minimum. Mild revisions to the same splendid Ferrari-built, 3-liter twin-turbo V-6 found in the Ghibli boost output to 424 horsepower and 428 foot-pounds of torque. Given that I found the Ghibli to compete well in a space crowded with options fielding legit sporting chops, it’s clear this proven blueprint bodes well for the Levante. Keeping the Levante planted is a complex and advanced suspension system dubbed Skyhook. To my surprise, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar doesn’t belong to Maserati’s marketing team. Instead, Skyhook combines air springs and electronic adjustable dampers. This combo delivers five adjustable ride heights for all sorts of scenarios, such as sport, ice, comfort or off-road, along with combinations of damper stiffness to go along with those different driving modes. I found it to be quite accommodating. Want cushy? You got it. And when you want washboard-flat cornering, you can have that, too. Because this advanced suspension
hangs from dual a-arm-front and multilink-rear hardware, such a satisfying result should come as no surprise. Admittedly, I set my expectations low for how an SUV will handle twisty bits. Doing so makes for a more rewarding sense of excitement when one greatly exceeds, like this Levante did. The rest of the driving experience equally enticed, with one notable exception. My amorous feeling for the Ferrari-finished V-6 heart in the Ghibli drive remains with the Levante: This smooth and rev-happy piece pulls and sings all the way to the top. In Levante tune, though, I can’t tell whether to fault turbo lag or a transmission brain fart, but on initial pedal mashing, there can be what feels like a full “Final Jeopardy” theme song’s worth of time waiting for that rush of acceleration. Pressing the pedal through the firewall matters not; the delay remains the same. Once things get spinning, they continue without delay through snapping gear shifts, so it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. I know intimately how turbo lag feels, and this feels more like the computer getting caught between “piddlingaround-town mode” and “business-time mode.” I can happily report, though, that that ends my quibbles list. Otherwise, the Levante S is a joy to drive, both in comfort through day-to-day traffic and in an

TesT Drive: 2017 Maserati Levante S aggressive way – one of which Enzo Ferrari himself would be proud. The underpinnings don’t just resemble those of the Ghibli, they improve on them – further refinement of the sporting purpose. Maserati’s new Levante then delivers on the promise on engagement behind the wheel. What sets it apart, however, is style and panache, both inside and out. This greatlooking people-hauler may be the most distinctive on the road today. The deeply faceted front grill sports a muscular, elegant look and ties into the sculpted lights perfectly. It presents a shape full of 3-D interest; fat fender haunches pinch inward to a sleek greenhouse. The sharp rake angle of the rear glass gives it a much more slippery look, as opposed to the block-on-wheels of many SUVs. That sloped rear glass does, however, contribute to somewhat poor rear visibility – a price I’d willingly pay for the style it brings. And as attractive as the Levante is outside, the interior’s even more stunning: Beautifully contrasting elements and materials abound. As with the Ghibli, the Chrysler parts-bin pieces are evident, but they’re integrated much more successfully into the Levante interior. Sure, I’d still prefer an infotainment display with a less obviously American-looking font and layout, but the rest of the appointments look so pretty, I found myself not even noticing. In a market segment growing more and more crowded, the Levante carves out a niche for itself. A similarly priced BMW or Porsche can easily evoke feelings of “that’s nice,” but the Levante makes you say, “Damn, that’s really nice.” And as with the other Maserati offerings, you’ll likely never need to worry about parking next to your twin. Exclusivity’s an implicit perk of Levante ownership. In all honesty, I’ve already driven way more SUVs for Ladue News Test Drive columns than I ever intended. I’m happy I have, though, because I’ve found doing so doesn’t have to mean you’re stuck driving what feels like a three-legged bar stool. I’m not finished making the rounds yet, but the Maserati Levante S strikes me as a thoroughly rewarding, sharp driving experience full of tactile and visual oohs and aahs alike. Whether it’s the best option or not seems irrelevant – it’s a very good one with enough individual flair to make it a welcome addition. orsche St. Louis has a whole new look and feel. Less than a year ago, the company opened a new, more modern dealership on South Hanley Road. The all-new dealership serves as a true destination for enthusiasts of the automotive brand in the Midwest. The 44,000-square-foot building features 17 service bays, three 66-foot climate-controlled indoor service reception lanes, a customer lounge, a boutique and an Internet café with Wi-Fi. National automotive company indiGO Auto Group formed Porsche St. Louis in 2015 after acquiring and merging Plaza Porsche and Parktown Porsche. In December 2016, the dealership was moved to a temporary location on Manchester Road while the new facility was under construction. It proved to be worth the wait. indiGO Auto Group chairman and CEO Todd Blue says St. Louis deserves the outstanding Porsche facility. “I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to share our company’s passion for Porsche with the great city of St. Louis,” Blue says. We’ve all seen the ads from the retirement communities that extoll the virtues of senior living. Sonja Nelson-Stough and her husband, Larry Stough, visit these places several times a month. They think they’re nice. But Sonja and Larry aren’t there because they want to move in. They come to perform for the residents. Sonja plays the hammered dulcimer, with Larry accompanying her on guitar. Sharing their love of music is something they do in their spare time. But it’s not the only thing. After retiring as a bank trust officer in 2008, Sonja started taking tap and ballroom dance lessons. She has danced competitively for 10 years. In her spare time, she plays golf.
By the way, she’ll turn 77 next year. Larry, meanwhile, isn’t twiddling his thumbs. Just last year, he rode his motorcycle on Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. He’s an amateur photographer who enjoys tennis, golf and scuba. Neither one takes bone density, blood pressure or any other kind of medication.
How do they do it? “It’s easy,” says Sonja. “For the past decade, we’ve begun each week together at 20 Minutes to Fitness.” “This unique, once-a-week, 20-minute workout fuels all our other activities,” says Larry. “It’s safe. It’s medically based. It keeps us young, fit and strong.” “We could not do the things we do without the strength building we get from 20 Minutes to Fitness,” Sonja adds. “It helps us build and maintain a strong core.” In other words, it helps fend off all those things that are leading their peers into retirement community living. There’s one other thing you should know about Sonja: she hates exercising. “We have tried other exercise programs, gyms and classes, and I will not stick with them,” Sonja admits. “I dreaded going.” 20 Minutes to Fitness, she says, is different. “I do my 20 Minutes once a week, and I’m done,” she says. “So this is it for me. Best of all, it works! I saw results in the beginning, and I’m still seeing results today.” If you think you are too old, too out-of-shape or have too many health issues for 20 Minutes to Fitness, think again. Even when Sonja and Larry had casts on their legs, they never missed a session. 20 Minutes to Fitness’ trainers – which include physical therapists and other pros – tailor every workout to your needs and capabilities. Sonja’s friends tell her they wish they had her stamina, balance, flexibility, positive attitude and energy. All she’ll say is, “It’s great to be strong and do the things I love to do. I can honestly say 20 Minutes to Fitness has made the difference.”
As for those retirement homes: they’re a nice place to visit. Larry and Sonja just never hope to live there.
More about Sonja and Larry:
Sonja served as 2013 Ms. Missouri Senior America, competing in the national pageant in New Jersey. Next year she and her husband, Larry, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They have trained together at 20 Minutes to Fitness since 2007.
For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836), Chesterfield (636-536-1504), or Sarasota or Tampa, Fla., or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

Our only official rule is no macro brews.” To that end, visitors can find everything from the likes of Ferguson Brewing Co.’s pecan brown ale to Schlafly Beer’s hard apple cider on draft. The roster rotates based on seasonal availability and also includes a number of alternatives, among them eight wines such as Banfi Wines’ Eufloria. To start, patrons open a tab at the host’s stand with a state ID and credit card in exchange for a radio-frequency identification bracelet. Information about each libation is available via tablet controls. “It’s a great opportunity to sample something; it’s a matter of putting a splash in your glass and giving it a taste,” Ryan says. “A lot of people love this and say, ‘I’m not a full-glass person.’ They’d rather try a lot of different things.” To pair with their drinks, Tapped guests can choose from a menu of casual Neapolitan-inspired pies, sandwiches and snacks – all available to order at a walk-up counter in front of the house pizza oven. Story: Springtime for Norman and Ethel Thayer means a return to their beloved cabin on the shores of Golden Pond in the woods of Maine. Norman’s 80th birthday is nearing, and Ethel, 10 years his junior, is busily preparing for that occasion. Their only child, 47-year-old Chelsea, plans to visit them for the first time in seven years. A divorcée, she’s bringing along her new boyfriend, a dentist named Bill Ray, as well as Bill’s teenage son, Billy Jr. Norman, a retired English professor, revels in being tart-tongued and using his acid wit on family members, as well as outsiders like Charlie, the middle-aged mail carrier who also still carries a torch for Chelsea dating back to childhood. Apparent to everyone, though, is the fact that Norman has begun to lose his memory, which he fights valiantly but which seems inexorable. Chelsea’s arrival renews a long-time tension between father and daughter. She stays only briefly, asking if her parents would mind taking care of Billy Jr. while she and Bill go to Europe for a month. During that period, Norman and Billy Jr. forge an unlikely friendship based on fishing, humor and a shared enthusiasm for life. Highlights: Fine performances by her cast, under the gentle direction of Trish Brown, epitomize the humanity and compassion of Ernest Thompson’s script in Insight Theatre Company’s inaugural presentation at its new home, The .ZACK in Grand Center, as it opens its 10th-anniversary season. Other Info: On Golden Pond premiered on Broadway in 1979 and was adapted to the screen in 1981 – winning Oscars for Henry Fonda (as Norman) and Katharine Hepburn (as Ethel), as well as co-starring Jane Fonda (as Chelsea). A slight story in which nothing much happens, its effective telling nevertheless provides performers with the opportunity to sink their teeth into several well-written roles. Brown’s cast includes Insight stalwarts Joneal Joplin and Susie Wall, who work seamlessly together as the aging New England couple. Joplin portrays Norman with a meaner edge than I’ve seen in previous productions, especially in the first act. Conversely, he most effectively conveys the character’s deep love for Ethel, on whom Norman increasingly relies as his health wanes. Wall shows the depth of Ethel’s love for her husband of nearly 50 years, as well as her affection for their daughter and her innate friendliness with strangers, such as Bill, or familiar faces like Charlie, whom she invites in from his route for coffee and biscuits while sitting and chatting a bit. Wall also can be stern in Ethel’s rebuke of her daughter’s penchant for self-pity when Chelsea’s around Norman. The supporting cast contributes steady, reliable performances that underscore both the gentleness and

the caustic aspects of Thompson’s two-act script. Jenni Ryan displays both Chelsea’s fondness for her mother, as well as her uneasiness around her argumentative father, who feels more comfortable conversing about baseball with her than discussing her life and relationships. Eric Dean White and Kurt Knoedelseder add to the humor of the story as Chelsea’s lover, Bill, and her childhood sweetheart, Charlie. White pairs amusingly with Joplin as the middle-aged boyfriend discusses his planned sleeping arrangements with Chelsea in a testy conversation with Chelsea’s cantankerous, manipulative father. Knoedelseder is ingratiating in scenes Charlie shares with Ethel and later in a tender moment when he sees Chelsea again for the first time in many years as their genuine friendship is poignantly reconnected. By adding two years to the age of Billy, 20-something Michael Pierce convincingly portrays the 15-year-old with his mannerisms, as well as his slouching posture and accessible nature. It’s gratifying to watch Billy take to the novels recommended by Norman when they’re not baiting hooks to reel in “the big ones” in the eponymous pond while they’re bonding in a boat. Matt Stuckel’s set design includes a video design with a shimmering pond seen through the Thayer window, as well as a dilapidated screen door that provides ongoing humor in the first act. Geordy Van Es’ lighting design handsomely underscores scenes at various points in the day, while Robin Weatherall’s sound design enhances the story with the romantic call of nearby loons on the water. On Golden Pond showcases the talents of Brown’s carefully chosen cast to get Insight’s 10th season off to a fine start.

A local theater-centered organization helps incarcerated and otherwise troubled Missourians battle adversity.
O
ften, the strength of the mental bars that jail many people far outstrips that of any merely material constraints, a misfortune Prison Performing Arts (PPA) strives to help incarcerated individuals conquer by way of the stage. Shelby Partridge, the organization’s director of development and operations, outlines its theatrically therapeutic efforts, for adults and children alike, at five Missouri locations: the St. Louis City Juvenile Detention Center (SLCJDC), the city’s Hogan Street Regional Youth Center, Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC) in Pacific, Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green and Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia. Partridge first provides succinct background on the criteria informing the works chosen for production by PPA (now nearing its 30th year). “For our prison theater classes, the selection of scripts is typically built around ideas generated by the inmates themselves, either in terms of genre, theme or a specific playwright,” she says. “Time is spent reading and discussing each play, with the inmates voting on which script they would like to produce.”
70
july 21, 2017 | LadueNews.com
The MECC class, Partridge continues, differs a bit. It starts with writing and improvisational exercises; progresses through the creation of themed poetry, skits and songs; and culminates in a script produced by the inmates, PPA director Christopher Limber and longtime PPA volunteer and dramaturge Jerry McAdams. So, too, does PPA’s youth programming differ, taking a multidisciplinary approach in theater, improv and other classes, Partridge relates. Because the lengths of stay at the St. Louis facilities it serves differ, that programming focuses on process over performance and seeks to improve literacy and communication. “The arts are an important vehicle for learning with students who haven’t been able to find success in traditional school settings,” she says. Partridge provides brief but telling metrics on how PPA’s efforts benefit participants. “Last year, the department of corrections did a study of PPA’s prison program and found that participants were 20 percent less likely to return to prison, …” she says. “We collect written surveys from the inmate participants at the close of each semester. Over 80 percent of participants report that participation in the program improves their mental health and self-confidence, and over 75
percent report improved social skills. “All outside guests to in-prison productions are surveyed after each performance and Q&A session, and 100 percent of respondents answer ‘yes’ when asked if they feel the PPA program can help inmates improve social and communication skills necessary for successful re-entry to society.” Partridge also provides insights into recent performances, as well as general favorites. “PPA commissioned a new work, Run-On Sentence, by St. Louis playwright Stacie Lents, and a public audience saw its debut June 22 at WERDCC,” she says. “It’s phase one of PPA’s New Plays Initiative, which pairs a playwright with a group of inmates to create a work that speaks to their human experiences. … “A yearly favorite for many is the Spring Hip Hop Poetry Project at the SLCJDC. Since 2004, PPA has utilized the public school spring break at the center to provide a full week of intensive arts programming that culminates with a lively and moving performance – featuring the original, unfiltered writings of the young people – for family members and PPA supporters. “It gives the public a raw look at the daily challenges facing our St. Louis city youths. What they have to say is extremely relevant, and it’s
important that we, as St. Louisans, listen. The courage they show – opening up about their hopes and fears – is astonishing.” Partridge goes into greater detail about the productions that, over time, have garnered the greatest favor among participants and audiences alike. “A long-standing PPA favorite is the 2002 production of Hamlet, directed by PPA founder Agnes Wilcox, which was featured in a full, onehour episode of NPR’s This American Life,” she relates, adding that that episode (which appears online at thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/ episode/218/act-v) recently reaired with updates about the men involved. “In 2014, our Hip Hop Poetry Project titled Still I Rise celebrated the works of the beloved Maya Angelou,” Partridge continues, referring to the
renowned poet and native St. Louisan perhaps most famed for the poem “I know why the caged bird sings” and the autobiography of the same title. “The young people were immersed in her poetry, and it was fascinating to see how her writing inspired them creatively.” Although PPA’s spring efforts publicly concluded toward the end of June, Partridge notes the organization is already working on an exciting and challenging offering coming later this year. “PPA recently began a summer collaboration with Saint Louis University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Lucy Cashion, assistant professor of theater, and PPA director Rachel Tibbetts are teaching weekly poetry, playwriting and development workshops at WERDCC. “The group will study, explore and write about
the ancient Greek princess Antigone. Antigone’s story of fighting civic law to obey divine law became famous in the classical Greek tragedy Antigone, which premiered in Athens in 441 B.C. Since then, scholars, poets and playwrights have written their own translations, adaptations and critiques of the Antigone story, each from a different point of view.” In that vein, the university’s theater majors will reimagine Sophocles’ Antigone in St. Louis in October, with WERDCC participants in the PPA theater class following suit next spring in a further example of what Partridge calls “the transformative, healing power of art in corrections.” Prison Performing Arts, 3547 Olive St., Suite 250, St. Louis, 314-289-4190, prisonperformingarts.org
