from the

EDITOR ONLY A COUPLE OF MONTHS INTO DATING MY NOW-HUSBAND, I took it upon myself to update his outdated bachelor pad in various ways. Between ripping out a wall, gutting and refinishing an outdated bathroom and much more, I began to fall in love with the renovating process. And with so many home-restoration reality shows currently on TV, it’s no surprise that many individuals have jumped on the renovation/house-flipping bandwagon. So much so that now there is even a club in St. Louis dedicated to those interested in such undertakings: Rehabbers Club. Starting on page 30, LN contributing writer Brittany Nay shares the story behind Rehabbers Club – a group dedicated to helping homeowners remodel houses through classes and home tours that are taught by experts. The courses begin this fall. And if you are interested in this market, we hope you find a class worthwhile. Speaking of transforming abodes, Ladue News’ seventh annual Show House, presented by Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty, is coming up! Be among the first to explore this transformed estate on Oct. 5 at the Show House Preview Party, from 6 to 9 p.m. Peruse this exquisite 1930s abode, located at 110 Dielman Road, while enjoying live music, hors d’oeuvres and an open bar and, of course, seeing firsthand the work of St. Louis’ most talented and creative designers. For tickets or more information, visit laduenews.com. All the best,

his year, the St. Louis County NAACP Freedom Fund Leadership Dinner featured keynote speaker U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, from California, with Bob Holden, former Missouri governor, receiving an award. The theme of the dinner, the 81st for the St. Louis County NAACP, was “Rise Together,” reflected by the panel of honorees, who have shown their commitment to regionalism and economic inclusion. Guests enjoyed cocktails outside the ballroom at the The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis before dinner and a program featuring other awards, speakers and more.

As a young, politically active person in the region, it’s rare that you see organizations like the NAACP that have the caliber and influence to bring people together. The theme of our dinner this year is ‘Rise Together,’ and what we want to do in choosing that is be the premier partners for regionalism in our area. Because when we work together, we grow together, and when we grow together, we live better together, and that’s what we want to do at the NAACP. nspired by its “Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715-2015” exhibition, the Saint Louis Art Museum’s summer fundraiser took place recently to benefit the museum and the Saint Louis Fashion Incubator. The vibrant evening featured creative fashion interventions, themed cocktails, cuisine and music. The evening’s highlight, Fluid Fashion 18, involved a dynamic runway show conceived by fashion icon André Leon Talley. Talley, former editor-at-large for Vogue, was inspired to create the show after recent visits to the museum and the incubator. From the incubator’s collection, he selected pieces for the show created by the program’s six emerging designers, all reflecting ensembles in “Reigning Men.” Talley also appeared at the event in support of the incubator and the designers: Agnes Hamerlik, Allison Mitchell, Audra Noyes, Charles Smith II, Emily Brady Koplar and Reuben Reuel. Additionally, the designers themselves trod the runway.

P

urses & Pumps for Pooches & Pals has become a not-to-be-missed social-calendar highlight for St. Louis women! Each year, more than 400 professional women enjoy food and refreshments from St. Louis’ finest restaurants, stunning designer purses and shoes for raffle, the chance to network and, of course, a chance to meet the always-in-style animals up for adoption. The 12th annual event, which took place in June, moved to the Humane Society of Missouri’s new, state-of-the-art facility, the Best Buddy Center in Maryland Heights. It featured purses from such designers as Salvatore Ferragamo, Halston, Kate Spade, Coach and many more. Co-chairing the event were Pam Nicholson, Judy Calhoun and Harika Fava. The honorary chairperson was Jan Torrisi-Mokwa.

This special night combines so much that women in St. Louis love: fine food, high fashion, incredible networking and, of course, the opportunity to help countless animals in need. Proceeds from this annual event directly benefit the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Fund, which provides rescue, rehab and adoption to animals in distress and helps further the mission of providing them with second chances for healthy and happy lives.

The bill of fare also featured sushi, sashimi, a raw bar and more. Lift For Life Academy offers a private school atmosphere, providing all programs and services at no cost to students and their families. Nutrition forms an important part of its focus. CHARITIES & NONPROFITS: Feature Story

Unlock Magic OF LEARNING the

By Robyn Dexter

F

or more than a decade, hundreds have gathered at Grant’s Farm in September to celebrate the mission of St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association (St. Louis LDA). St. Louis LDA is observing 20 years of the annual event and the nonprofit’s dedication to enhancing the understanding and acceptance of learning disabilities. On Sept. 30 specifically, supporters and children alike will gather yet again at Grant’s Farm for the organization’s annual Unlock the Magic of Learning event, where they’ll be greeted by stilt-walkers, musicians, face painters and more. S. Louis LDA CEO Pam Kortum says the event is always family-driven and will feature dinner, live music by Smash Band, live and silent auctions, games and performances by the Muny Kids. “We started [the event] at The Magic House and had maybe 70 people,” Kortum says. “We kept it there for a few years and then moved it to the City Museum. After outgrowing that space, we moved to Grant’s Farm and have been here ever since.” In the past few years, upwards of 600 people have attended the fundraiser, which supports the organization’s scholarship program. “It’s so heartwarming to see everyone gathering for the same purpose of helping kids who wouldn’t normally be able to get the help they need because the

24

parents aren’t able to pay the fee,” Kortum says. “The more funding, the more we’ll be able to help kids in our community.” Kortum says the parents who come to St. Louis LDA for help are often distraught and don’t know where else to turn. “A lot of times, their child is flunking in school or are very young,” she says. “They come to us, and we put a whole program together for the child, which can include tutoring, advocacy and training for teachers. It’s a large cost factor per child, but we feel like that’s the best way to impact their life.” What started as a small group of concerned parents has grown into a group that’s been able to help more than 31,000 children, parents and educators in the St. Louis area annually. It’s the only organization in the greater St. Louis area that provides a comprehensive range of services to children with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning differences and Asperger’s syndrome. “If you have a child who struggles, please contact us. We’re here to help,” she says. “We want to reach as many children as we can so we can help them become successful in the classroom.” St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association, 13537 Barrett Parkway Drive, Suite 110, Ballwin, 314-966-3088, ldastl.org

REHABBERS CLUB CLASSES GUIDE HOMEOWNERS THROUGH THE RIGOROUS, REWARDING JOURNEY OF HOME RENOVATION.

Y

ou’ve seen it on all the home-restoration reality shows, from HGTV’s Flip or Flop to Rehab Addict – more people than ever have a passion for buying affordable houses to invest in through an extensive renovation or to flip and sell or rent. And St. Louis is no exception: With the growing number of rehabbers across the city, Revitalize St. Louis is answering the call to bring back its Rehabbers Club this fall. Rehabbers Club, a group that helps homeowners remodel houses through expert-led classes and home tours, is an extension of Revitalize St. Louis, an organization that promotes the revitalization of the City of St. Louis through education and support of progressive civic projects. The club, which is returning after a few years on hiatus, has hosted classes covering a broad range of rehab topics, from How to Be a Landlord, Real Estate Financing 101, Selecting a Contractor and Managing Investment Property, to Rehabbing Green, New Laws in Lead Abatement, How to Use Historic Preservation Tax Credits and How to Rehab Historic Windows. “This series of classes is to help homeowners get some of their most frequent questions answered in a class environment that allows them to ‘ask an expert’ and to share experiences that can benefit everyone,” says Stephanie Noecker, board treasurer of Revitalize St. Louis. This fall, classes will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at Narrative Furniture, a handmade heirloom furniture-building company at 2501 S. Jefferson St. Classes cost $10 per session or $40 per five-class series for nonmembers, and $8 per session or $32 per five-class series for members. Seats are limited, so interested attendees should email info@rvstl.org to be added to the mailing list and receive Eventbrite invites to register for the classes. The series kicks off Sept. 16 with Funding a Rehab and Using Historic Tax Credits, led by a local mortgage lender with expertise in 203(k) loans, and by Michael Allen, preservationist and historic tax credit consultant, followed by a class focused on Buying Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) Properties and Leveraging City Resources on Sept. 23, as well as What to Expect From Your Building Inspector on Oct. 7. “Private and city building inspectors familiar with the requirements of inspections will share their insight,” Noecker says. Courses continue Oct. 14 when local contractors will host a panel on Tuckpointing, Roofing and Tips for Hiring a Contractor. And on Oct. 28, Taking Design Cues From Your Space will be led by Andy Kim, founder and CEO of Narrative Furniture, and Heather Lents, an interior designer at Jacobs architecture firm in St. Louis. Although classes are open to everyone, the subject matter is geared toward urban – likely historic – homeowners, Noecker says, noting that restoring a century home can be very involved. “It includes everything from

getting the right permits to finding appropriate contractors, to locating historic fixtures, doors, mantels and more that you might need to finish the home,” she says. “This annual series of classes aims to tackle the most common of those issues.” Scott McIntosh, a Rehabbers Club attendee and president and communications chair of the Benton Park West Neighborhood Association, joined the classes to learn firsthand about the historic home rehab process. “When I needed a contractor to do work on my home, I used tips on hiring a contractor that I learned from the classes,” he says. “First, I vetted contractors by using the Rehabbers Club contractors list to get started. Secondly, I asked for references from past customers whom I called to learn about their experience. Lastly, I did not pay everything upfront, but by installments, until the work was complete.” McIntosh, who also learned about historic tax credits and area resources for materials and subcontractors, says he encourages anyone who is interested in rehabbing a St. Louis home to take part in the club. Stay tuned to Revitalize St. Louis’ Facebook page for information about more Rehabbers Club activities, including tours of developing neighborhoods and special events. Interested local rehabbers also can join a more than 2,000-member email list, where they can share tips with one another and find inspiration for their next restoration project. With so many years of experience among the Rehabbers Club class leaders and members, McIntosh says what you can learn from them about home refurbishing is “invaluable.” Rehabbers Club, rvstl.org/rehabbers-club

Red Flags When

Interviewing a Designer By Jake Spurgeon | Photos supplied by Mosby Building Arts

D

iscussing your project with a designer essentially functions as an interview to determine whether you want to collaborate. It also marks the time to look for red flags, indicating whether you may or may not be a good match. Ask these five questions, paying close attention to the details of a designer’s answers, so you select the right person to work with: What’s your process, and how long will it take? You want an idea of how the designer and his or her team work together: from beginning to end of the project. A clearly defined process indicates an organized company. After defining exactly what you want done to your home, your designer should have a good starting estimate of how much time will be needed to complete a project. Do not accept vague time frames if you have a specific deadline. What’s your work permit process? If your project involves construction, the only good answer to this question is that the company will pull permits, and the company will do it. Reputable remodelers take responsibility for the detailed permit process. If remodelers deem permits unnecessary or suggest that you obtain them, consider that a red flag to look elsewhere.

32

SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 | LadueNews.com

What are your credentials? You need to know if a designer and his or her company are qualified to work on your project. Are they certified in kitchen and bath design? Will a registered architect oversee and stamp construction drawings? You also want a company that the Better Business Bureau has accredited and that carries appropriate insurance – protecting you and your investment. What kind of warranty do you have? Many items used in a project have a manufacturer’s warranty. You need to know how the company installing such items will take care of any problems that may arise after the fact. You’re looking for a workmanship warranty, as well as details on exactly what it covers and how long it lasts. You need assurance that a designer and his or her company stand behind their work for the long haul. Can I see examples of your work and references? Bona fide designers love this question because potential customers can learn a lot about them while viewing a portfolio. In terms of references, though, a shift in the last five years or so has taken place as homeowners have started doing a lot of internet research before inviting a designer aboard. (When I myself offer to share references, clients usually respectfully decline because they already know more

about me than I do!) But if you ask for references and a designer hems and haws, consider it a red flag. Asking these basic questions will usually result in a promising idea of what kind of designer you’re dealing with and help you decide if you want to pursue a working relationship. Also, homeowners, I recommend paying close attention to the kinds of questions the designer asks you! Those questions can give you valuable insights into the designer’s priorities and focus. You can also learn if the project will be about you and your style – or just something the designer wants in his or her portfolio. It happens.

T

he Ryan Tradition has a rich history as a leading team in the luxury real estate market. Today, it has come to stand for more than million-dollar home sales. The name represents unmatched knowledge of the St. Louis area market and unparalleled service. “The Ryan Tradition evolved when I joined Anne Ryan in 1991,” says John Ryan. “Anne had been a market leader for 26 years; I brought 13 years of experience in other real estate disciplines. Since then, our total sales have exceeded $980 million. Each person has special roles, which, when combined with team collaboration, best serves our clients. We have a cohesive, entrepreneurial and innovative environment.” The Ryan Tradition is well-known for showcasing spectacular homes, like 26 Upper Ladue, which boasts 5 bedrooms, each with its own private bath, plus another full bathroom and 2 half-bathrooms. “This home is essentially 8 years old and resides on a private 3.56-acre lot in one of Ladue’s most prestigious neighborhoods,” Ryan says. Families will love the custom kitchen, which boasts two islands and access to the hearth room.

notes. “It offers geothermal heating and cooling, two generators and a whole-house Lutron lighting and sound system, with intercoms.” From the 18-foot beamed cathedral ceiling in the living room, which features a Juliet balcony, to French doors that lead out to the limestone terrace, the architecture is outstanding. The home has the amenities to match, including heated limestone flooring in the kitchen and breakfast room, double-layer granite countertops and marble baths. The master suite offers its own entrance, opening up to reveal a doublecoffered ceiling, a study with recessed paneling, a custom dressing room and a master bath, with heated marble flooring. “We have all the latest technology – and the support of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury,” Ryan says, which boosts the team’s impressive capabilities. “Our significant presence in the market and continual interaction with buyers, sellers and other agents are our strongest tools.”

“The fine craftsmanship of this special residence blends the architectural integrity of the original home with features of the new, custom home,” Ryan

Secrets to Ageless Beauty

A

By Kimmie Gotch

lthough we all likely have that one friend who seemingly never ages, most of us enjoy no such luck. Over time, our skin gradually changes, with wrinkles and fine lines often becoming intrusive. As a result, ladies, accompany changing skin with a change in routine, ensuring concealed imperfections. The following five-step routine should promote an ageless look – or at least the impression of one. Prepare properly. Before you apply any makeup, properly moisturize. Moisturizing will not only aid in softer, more elastic skin, but it will also keep your skin hydrated. Following a skin care routine in addition to your day-to-day makeup routine will keep your skin both looking and feeling better. Choose a foundation with sun protection factor (SPF). Select a foundation that not only flaunts a flawless finish but also benefits your skin’s solar protection. A foundation with SPF should shield your skin from sunburn and related woes. Plus, protecting your skin from harsh ultraviolet rays only helps prevent advanced wrinkles. Treat concealer judiciously. Concealer can settle into fine lines and wrinkles under your peepers, making your skin look overly “mature” (old, that is). If you suffer from dark under-eye circles, add a peach- or salmon-colored under-eye corrector before dabbing concealer atop it. Use matte eye shadows on the lids. Shimmer shadows tend to accentuate wrinkles, so opt instead for matte shades in eye makeup. Plus, in recent months, it seems the matte makeup trend has swept the beauty world. Apply lipstick with a satin finish. To make lips look fuller and smoother, apply a lipstick with a satin finish. Avoid matte or liquid lipsticks. Because aging is natural, don’t fret when you feel the need to change your makeup routine. No matter how old you may be, pay attention to your skin and take any steps necessary to ensure it looks lovely at each stage of life!

t The Tiny Hedgehog, there aren’t baby boy clothes and baby girl clothes – there are just clothes, to be worn by any baby or toddler. Instead of deciding who can wear what, this line of locally designed and sewn kiddo clothing focuses on other aspects, like comfort and aesthetics. “The Tiny Hedgehog is a collection of inclusive, vibrant and comfortable clothing for babies and toddlers,” says founder and designer Merlin Whitman. “I started The Tiny Hedgehog in 2016 after my daughter was born. Each garment is lovingly handcrafted in St. Louis so your little one will always look and feel [his or her] best.” One look at The Tiny Hedgehog shows a variety of colors from a mature palette that somehow work together perfectly in children’s clothing: robin’s-egg blue and mustard yellow are big players with little pops of cherry red, charcoal gray, dusty pink and more. You won’t see pastel blue and pink, in-yourface neons or the cutesy catchphrases often printed on children’s apparel. Instead, the clothing gives off a slight 1970s vibe while still feeling timeless. Even with its range of muted hues and plethora of patterns, all the items match nicely together. Mainstay features like a contrast trim, sleeve or waistband unify the collection. It turns out that selecting these patterns is the longest part of the process for Whitman. “I start my design process by looking at fabric samples and deciding on a particular color mood for the season,” she says. “I tend to mull over colors and patterns for a good while before finally committing on my fabric palette. At the same time, I’m also thinking about the upcoming season and sketching some clothing designs.”

52

SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 | LadueNews.com

These shapes and fabrics may be great in adult minds, but do children – the ones actually wearing the pieces – like them? Turns out, all The Tiny Hedgehog pieces are approved by one youngster. “Once the fabric and designs are decided on, I’ll create a mockup of the design and let my daughter run around the house in them to see how she likes it,” Whitman says. “If it [earns] her seal of approval, I’ll start production. I cut and sew all of the clothing in my home studio in Old North St. Louis.” The Tiny Hedgehog’s current collection includes five shapes in a few pattern options: pants, shorts, tunics, and short- and long-sleeved T-shirts in sizes newborn to 5T. Prices range from $25 to $43, and the patterns include everything from woodland scenes to overlapping kittens to tiny sparrows. “I think vibrant and joyful are good words to describe The Tiny Hedgehog,” Whitman says of her colorful collection. “I want to make clothes that are inclusive and comfortable to wear for every child. I don’t think we need to stick to just pink and blue for our kiddos.” Whitman credits her daughter as her biggest inspiration. Whitman, a lifelong seamstress, has been making clothing for years, but she transitioned into these petite versions when her daughter was born. “Baby clothes are nice because they don’t take as long

as making adult pieces, so I could whip up a pair of pants between naps,” she says. “It helped me feel more myself again and gave me a creative outlet that I really needed in the months after her birth.” On Friday, Sept. 1, Whitman says The Tiny Hedgehog will release its first fall mini line, which will include four pieces. Then, later this year will come a fall/winter collection. Local shoppers can be on the lookout for The Tiny Hedgehog at autumn craft fairs and festivals, including the South Grand Fall Festival on Sept. 16 and The Strange Folk Festival from Sept. 22 to 24 at a location to be announced. Those looking to find Whitman’s creations outside of those events can shop online (thetinyhedgehog.com) or at boutiques Amber Sky in Maplewood and Lass & Laddie in Kirkwood. “There’s always a bit of self-doubt when you create something new, but people have really responded well to The Tiny Hedgehog – not only in how they look but also how they feel,” Whitman says. “I use a soft cotton jersey for all the clothing, so everyone is always commenting on how snuggly it feels. I’ve also had a lot of adults say, ‘I wish you made them in my size!’ Someday, maybe!” The Tiny Hedgehog, thetinyhedgehog.com

itto Family Resale on Manchester Road is an upscale resale store with a unique twist – its proceeds benefit eight area Christian schools. Started by local Christian schools to provide scholarships and help keep tuition costs low, Ditto has grown into a thriving business that caters to all and is celebrating five years of business this year. Members from the participating institutions – Central Christian School, Covenant Christian School, Heritage Classical Christian Academy, Kirk Day School, Promise Christian Academy, South City Community School, Twin Oaks Christian School and Westminster Christian Academy – believe that Christian education should be available to all who want it. With $330,000 given to participating schools in the last five years, the resale shop has already been a huge success. Ana Woodard, who was part of the group that founded Ditto, says this has turned into something much bigger than they could’ve ever imagined. “It’s not just about earning money for our member schools,” she says. “It’s equally about our customers, donors and serving the community.”

56

Ditto carries clothing, shoes and home goods for the entire family. The 11,000 square-foot store boasts a boutique atmosphere where shoppers can find everything from home décor to toys to new

designer clothing. Deborah Shields, the store’s manager, says customers enjoy their shopping experience because of how they’re treated and greeted. “They feel the love of Christ when they walk

through the door,” she says. “It creates an atmosphere of love and joy.” The store has a small paid staff, but it’s mainly run by volunteers who come from member schools. Ninety percent of Ditto’s profits specifically go toward tuition remission, while the remaining 10 percent of such profits go back to the neighboring community. Ditto recently surpassed the $2 million mark in sales and distributed $25,000 to each of its member schools in August. They also plan to donate several thousand dollars of this past year’s profits to two local public schools. The store accepts donations during business hours, Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations accepted include clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and children, jewelry, furniture, home goods, decorative and seasonal items, books, toys, and more. Ditto also offers a complimentary furniture pickup the second Saturday of each month. 10027 Manchester Road, St. Louis, 314-394-2026, dittostl.com

GAME ON!

Six Thoughts for

SEPTEMBER By Frank Cusumano

Here are half a dozen things I’ve been thinking about:

1 On the go? O Take Ladue News with you! Download our LN iPad app. Available in the Apple App Store. A

Your Family. Your Focus. Your Future.

I happen to be a big fan of the DeWitt family. In my opinion, Bill DeWitt Jr. is the finest owner we have ever had in St. Louis sports. He’s as dignified and as competitive as an owner can get. His son, Bill DeWitt III, is just like his father. However, as much as I like the family, I’m not concerned about the trust funds of their great-grandchildren, so I’m suggesting that this off-season, they spend. Giancarlo Stanton has a $300 million contract and would change the look of this team. He is the impact batter the Cardinals have lacked for a long time. The Cardinals will draw 3.4 million in attendees this year, and shortly, a billiondollar television contract with Fox Sports Midwest will kick in. Translation: They have the money. They have never been cheap. Now’s the time to be aggressive.

2

The Cardinals should do everything possible to sign Lance Lynn. If it takes $100 million, then spend $100 million. Lance is our best pitcher. You don’t let your best pitcher walk; you sign him. Lynn has the lowest WHIP and ERA. Plus, Lynn is 30 years old with a fresh elbow. If his next five seasons are like his first five seasons, he would have 145 wins. That’s one more win than the great Chris Carpenter.

3

I really enjoyed being in Canton for the Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremony. The speeches are long, but they’re incredibly emotional. I thought it was so classy for Kurt Warner to invite Trent Green – and even classier for Trent to accept. The two have so much in common. Basically the same size and age, both got late starts in their careers, and both owe a lot to Mike Martz and Dick Vermeil. People sometimes forget that Trent went on to have an incredible career with the Chiefs.

4

I looked at the SLU and Mizzou nonconference basketball schedules. As fascinating as that matchup with Rockhurst is, why is neither SLU nor Mizzou playing? Mizzou didn’t want the game because of the attitude of nothing to gain and everything to lose; that’s the wrong attitude. Coaches Martin and Ford are friendly, and they have talked about it. The game will be played. It would be great for basketball passion in our area.

5

I am jealous of Kansas City. They got things done and have a soccer team. Nashville is on the cusp of doing the same. Gene McNary had the best idea: Combine the city and county, making the county pay for part for the stadium.

How did we exist without Netflix? Have you seen Luther or The Ozarks? Have you spent any time viewing The Killing? Netflix changes the way I fly on airplanes. It changes the way I watch television. It changes the way I kill time. I want everybody to continue to watch KSDK, but I understand now the value of some fine binge-watching on Netflix. I used to think I can’t be that unproductive. Now, I believe we need to have days like that. No goals, no deadlines, just relaxing.

The Stages of Sight

iven the significance of sight in society, parents should take extra care to ensure the proper functioning of that sense in their children at birth and otherwise early in life. Newborns can see large shapes, faces and bright colors. By approximately 3 months, babies can focus on smaller objects. And although it’s normal for babies’ eyes to cross, they should work in a coordinated manner – termed “conjugate gaze” – by the age of 4 months. By age 1, children can see as well as adults and begin to understand what they see. Because your own child’s vision develops quickly during the first year, parents, your doctor should ask questions or check with you about vision at every checkup. In addition to looking for these normal developmental milestones, keep an eye out (pun intended) for warning signs of vision problems. Let your doctor know if: Your baby can’t make steady eye contact or can’t follow an object like a toy

or your face by the age of 3 months. Your baby’s eyes still cross at 4 months. By that fourth month, your baby’s eyes misalign or drift, flutter from side to side, or react with overmuch sensitivity to light and/or look constantly red. You have any concerns about your baby’s vision. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology both recommend a thorough exam by your pediatrician at your baby’s birth and during all well-child checkups. Starting no later than the age of 3 – or sooner, depending on your child and his or her cooperation level – automatic photo refraction screening devices can be used to detect potential vision problems. For more information about vision-related topics, concerned parents should visit mercy.net/service/childrens-eyes.

How to prove parental alienation

St. Louis County Office

West County Office

St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Parental alienation is a term in which more people are becoming familiar with. In lots of situations, individuals might allege that parental alienation is taking place. In many of these situations, the parents in a custody case might allege that the children do not like them and do not want to be around them. When they are around the kids, they might allege that the other parent has poisoned the minds of the children somehow. There is no question that parental alienation can happen. Unfortunately, there are certain situations where the minds of the children can be poisoned over time about the other parent. Parental alienation oftentimes takes quite a bit of time. It does not happen quickly. But over time, the one parent might say and do things to the children that cause the children not to like the parent to an extreme degree. Having said that, parental alienation is still not something that takes place often. It really takes a lot of comments, statements and

60

SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 | LadueNews.com

actions to take place for the children to truly be alienated from the other parent. Parental alienation should not be confused with realistic estrangement where the actions of the parent might be so severe that they cause the children to be estranged from them. In some cases, it might be hard to tell out of the gates whether there is parental alienation or realistic estrangement taking place. In terms of how to prove parental alienation where it is alleged, it often requires a custody evaluation. During a full custody evaluation, a psychologist might be able to get enough information to render an opinion about parental alienation. Getting enough information for a custody evaluation often requires examining school and medical records. It often requires interviews with the children, the parties to the custody case and other individuals with relevant information. Additionally, it often requires psychological testing and perhaps a review of the psychological and/or psychiatric records of the parties

and/or the children. Many individuals may believe that a judge can find parental alienation without an expert witness (usually a psychologist) performing a custody evaluation. However, that is not usually the case and an expert opinion is necessary to find parental alienation. A

mid hectic work, school and activity schedules, families can often find themselves struggling to eat healthily – especially when it comes to consuming enough fruits and vegetables every day. In honor of the National Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month, held in September, local dietitians are offering tips to help parents get everything from the apples to the zucchini they need – and even how to make these nutritious whole foods appeal to kids. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends adults have 2½ to five combined cups of fruits and vegetables a day, with two to three cups for kids. So local dietitians recommend ensuring there are fresh fruits and vegetables in all three daily meals, as well as snacks – from spinach in omelets to berries in yogurt and kale in smoothies.

PREP AHEAD Local dietitians say the first step to consuming more fruits and veggies is to make them easily accessible to all family members throughout the day. “Wash and cut up vegetables, so that when you’re ready to cook them, they’re ready to go,” says Kathy Mankofsky, a registered dietitian with Mercy Hospital Dietitian Services. Keep the vegetables in a clear container in the refrigerator. You’ll see them when you open the fridge, and it will be a reminder that a healthy snack is always at hand, Mankofsky adds. Jamie Cassell, a registered dietitian at St. Luke’s Hospital, advises cooking or prepping fruits and veggies in bulk. “Don’t just put together a salad for one night; prepare enough to have at lunch for the next few days,” she says. And if there isn’t time for prep, buy fruits and veggies that are prewashed and precut for a convenient snack or side dish, she says. “Vegetables can be steamed in the microwave in as little as three to four minutes.” To ensure fruits and veggies always are on hand, consider ordering groceries online, says Ellie Huff, a registered dietitian and co-owner of Nutriformance, a health club in Frontenac. The smartphone app Instacart can be used for food ordering and home delivery from local grocery stores such as Schnucks and Whole Foods Market, she notes.

KEEP IT KID-FRIENDLY When it comes to getting your kids to eat their fruits and vegetables, local dietitians recommend incorporating youngsters into the meal-prep process. “Take [your kids] to the grocery store, and ask them to pick some new fruits and vegetables that seem interesting,” Huff says. “Ask kids to help out in meal-prep – my daughter loves to make cucumber and tomato salads for the whole family.” Huff also recommends adding a fun side to fruits, such as peanut butter with apples and seasoning on veggies for more flavor. “Be creative: Freeze grapes and bananas, and make homemade popsicles with fresh fruit and 100 percent fruit juice,” she says. Cassell agrees that making fruits and veggies more kid-friendly can help improve intake. “Allow [kids] to dip fruit in low-fat vanilla yogurt or veggies in Greek-yogurt-based ranch dip,” she says. “Use olives, broccoli and bell pepper slices to make a smiley face on a homemade pizza, or make ants on a log with celery, peanut butter and raisins as a snack.” Research also shows that kids who help grow and prepare their own fruits and veggies are more likely to eat them, Cassell says. “Start small by growing lettuce or tomatoes in a pot.” Children learn by example, Mankofsky notes. “If they see you eating fruits and veggies on a regular basis, they will more likely eat them, too,” she says. “I had a patient who said her parents never served vegetables … Then she didn’t serve them to her kids. Now she wants to change this unhealthy pattern and start to make veggies for herself and her kids.”

MAKE HEALTHY SWAPS Swap the cookie jar for a bowl of fruit because it’s easy to grab a piece of fruit if it’s out on the countertop, Mankofsky says. “And here’s an easy recipe: You can buy a bag of zucchini noodles and toss them into your pasta sauce instead of regular noodles. You will be getting a whole lot of veggies instead of a whole lot of calories, and you will not believe how awesome it tastes,” she notes. And when your family goes out to eat, Huff recommends ordering vegetables and fruits for sides in place of unhealthy options such as fries. “If someone else cuts [the fruits and vegetables], kids will eat them,” she says. Remember, adequate fruit and vegetable consumption has many health benefits, including potential protection against heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity, Huff says. “Because fruits and vegetables are low-calorie and contain lots of good nutrients, they can help with weight management, as well,” Cassell adds. And they contain healthy chemical compounds called phytonutrients, antioxidants and lots of fiber, Mankofsky notes. “Each color is a different phytonutrient, so eat a rainbow of colors.”

n St. Louis’ Southampton neighborhood, a family of first-time restaurant owners hopes to introduce visitors to a variety of Asian flavors at MK’s Asian Persuasion. The restaurant, which debuted in June, features healthy Asian-fusion food, fruit smoothies and more, courtesy of M.K. Vongnarath and his daughters, Maya Vongnarath and Lisa Bobo. M.K. Vongnarath previously owned and operated MK’s Rolls and Wraps, a food truck that rolled out in 2014 but was subsequently sold to make way for the new brick-andmortar, full-service restaurant. “The great thing about the food-truck community

was being exposed to so many traditions and cultures,” M.K. Vongnarath says. “Being around all these different types of food inspired us to do Asian fusion. It’s not based on one nationality. We want to give everybody a bit of variety.” MK’s Asian Persuasion fills a space previously occupied by Oasis Shisha Lounge, with a capacity for 90 guests inside and an additional 20 on its patio. The interior features a simple, modern design with blackand-white tables and chairs, a corrugated ceiling, bar stools and a few lounge seats. “Growing up in Laos, I would help my mother make food in the village to take to the local monastery,” says

Story: Renowned Roman general Titus Andronicus returns victorious from a decade of fighting the Goths just after the death of the emperor. While the emperor’s sons, Bassianus and Saturninus, jockey to take control of Rome, tribune Marcus Andronicus proclaims that the people want his brother Titus to assume the title. Titus isn’t interested, though. He’s brought back as prisoners Tamora, the queen of the Goths, as well as her three sons and Aaron the Moor. Titus then kills her eldest son in revenge for the deaths of his own sons in the war, before throwing his support to Saturninus. The new ruler proclaims that he will wed Titus’ daughter, Lavinia – even though she’s engaged to his brother, Bassianus, who refuses to go along with the new arrangement. Titus kills one of his sons who defends Bassianus, then is stunned when Saturninus instead marries Tamora. She in turn plots her own revenge against the Roman general for killing one of her sons. Highlights: Murder, mayhem and machinations are the order of the day in William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, one of his bloodiest tragedies, for sure. St. Louis Shakespeare’s new production follows one the company did in the early 1990s at Washington University in St. Louis. Other Info: Tom Kopp directs with a sure hand this version, which is shortened to just two hours over two acts. If you’re a Titus fan, rest assured that Kopp and company spill enough blood to jump-start the next drive for the American Red Cross. Ted Drury’s somber sound design, which includes Susan Kopp’s thoughtful, original compositions, portends the ominous thread of developments in this early Shakespearean work, which even includes a “violence director,” namely Erik Kuhn. Meg Brinkley contributes some grisly props that give new meaning to the phrase “lend a hand,” while Darren Thompson’s lighting enhances Chuck Winning’s fortress-style scenic design. Zahrah Agha offers costume design that differentiates the Romans from their Gothic and Moorish counterparts. Titus Andronicus features a large cast whose members revel in their feats of dismemberment as they spew vile rebukes at their enemies, perceived or otherwise. Chad Little presents the title character as a pensive, albeit impulsive type, barely flinching as he kills his own son in one scene, while in another showing Titus’ descent into madness as he literally cooks up a scheme of revenge. Suki Peters effectively depicts the cunning and bloodthirsty Tamora, who shares a passionate scene with Darrious Varner as her Moorish lover, Aaron. Varner mines the contemptuous disdain of Aaron for

his Roman captors, while Roger Erb is properly nasty as the self-serving Saturninus. There’s good work by Britteny Henry as the terribly wronged Lavinia and Chris LaBanca as the dutiful Marcus. Scott McDonald plays the noble Bassianus, while Ted Drury and Michael Pierce portray Tamora’s venomous sons Demetrius and Chiron, respectively. The cast includes Erik Kuhn as Titus’ eldest son, Lucius; Riley James as Titus’ grandson Young Lucius; and Brian Rolf as the Roman nobleman Aemilius. Maxwell Knocke, Brennan Eller, Joshua Parrack, Shane Signorino, Joseph Garner, Chuck Winning, Nic Tayborn, Jeff Lovell, Megan Wiegert and Chuck Brinkley capably handle smaller roles. The Bard doubtless kept his audiences clamoring for more with his bloody, bloody story of The Lamentable Tragedy of Titus Andronicus. St. Louis Shakespeare cuts to the chase, so to speak, with its blood-soaked rendition.

Soul RON McILVAIN

ART and

W

ith its titular geographic reference, A Dublin Cityscape by Kirkwood’s Ron McIlvain (shown here) almost perforce calls to mind that most iconic of Dubliners, 20th-century literary giant James Joyce, and for most folks, any Joycean reflection probably ends, in one way or another, with some thought of Finnegans Wake. That seems apt. After all, arguably few works – in any medium – can match the oneiric impact of that literary behemoth, and A Dublin Cityscape seemingly communicates in the vernacular of dreams. McIlvain relates that he painted the 4- by 3-foot oil abstract on canvas in the spring of 2015. “It’s based on a photograph that I took of the city of Dublin, Ireland, from the top of the Guinness Tower while visiting there with my daughter,” he says. “Although I haven’t always based paintings on photographs, lately I’ve found that subjects like the outside of City Museum and inside of Union Station provide challenges when photographed that offer interesting opportunities to explore the relationship of lines, space, color, form, texture and composition. “Some of these elements, of course, may be included

in most paintings regardless of whether the paintings are representational or abstract. I’m primarily interested in how they relate to abstraction.” Since retiring almost a decade ago, in fact, McIlvain has devoted himself to painting abstracts like A Dublin Cityscape. Prior to his retirement, in 1963, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and fine arts from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Then came a Master of Arts degree in painting and bronze casting from the University of Kansas in 1972. For a time thereafter, McIlvain taught art in the Jennings and Ritenour school districts before entering the corporate world to leverage skills in design, photography, filmmaking and production. A Dublin Cityscape, he notes, has landed various laurels in its brief existence. As a JPG file, for instance, it earned the Award of Distinction last October at ViewPoint 48, a national juried art competition sponsored by Ohio’s Cincinnati Art Club, whose website characterizes it as the “second oldest continually operating organization of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains.” Prior to that, the painting also earned acceptance into the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s Missouri and Illinois juried “MOVE! All Media

Exhibition” in June 2015. Returning to its Finnegans Wakefulness, A Dublin Cityscape, as noted, commands attention for its seeming dreaminess. Predominated by shifting grays, it “feels” foggy, perhaps also ashen, like a chill Irish night inadequately but still invasively heated by peat. Amid those grays, other colors – a disquieting splash of scarlet, wisps of cobalt, a small but emphatic emerald daub – invite a retreat to Freud’s sekundäre ẞearbeitung (“secondary revision”) and the imposition, right or wrong, of some sort of narrative. Do human faces peer from the fog – and if so, what do their expressions convey? Does an aproned woman stand framed in a doorway there, or does that merely constitute an optic conceit? In short, like all art – or all the finest art – A Dublin Cityscape poses more questions than it answers.

Tennessee s ’ TRICKSTER

By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos supplied

Some surprising guest artists help a local theater festival stage a colorful, intriguing play by a gent named Williams.

K

ilroy, of the mid-20th-century “Kilroy was here!” visual/verbal meme, soon will visit the metro area courtesy of Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis – with aid from associates not only half the nation away but also half the world away. From Sept. 8 to 11 at the Grand Center’s .ZACK, the festival will welcome David Kaplan, who co-founded Massachusetts’ Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, as he directs Africa’s National Drama Company of Ghana in the famed playwright’s Ten Blocks on the Camino Real. Upfront, Kaplan succinctly addresses the degree to which Ten Blocks resembles more familiar works from Williams (a St. Louis native buried in Calvary Cemetery) like The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. “All Williams is about the same thing: love, youth, beauty, the summer,” he says. “None of these last long – and as a result, they need to be remembered, to be talked about and written about. That’s the imperative for performing the plays. We live knowing we will die, the glass animals will break, the match in the dark will blow out, but while the glass shimmers or the match blazes, we enjoy the light.” Of course, in that Kilroy (nominally the protagonist of the play in question) constitutes an archetypal trickster, this production involves a few peculiarities. First and foremost? Ten Blocks, which Williams wrote in New Orleans’ French Quarter, predates by the better part of a decade another drama entitled just Camino Real. “Ten Blocks came first as a one-act play that began as episodic scenes worked by Williams’ close collaborator Elia Kazan with actors from the Actors Studio, including Eli Wallach as Kilroy,” Kaplan says. “The one-act version was finished in 1946. It was experimental work, very different than the usual realism of the [Actors] Studio and different from Kazan’s work directing A Streetcar Named Desire in 1947. “The one-act was expanded by Williams into a full-length play with 16 blocks titled simply Camino Real. That opened on Broadway in 1953 and puzzled critics expecting something similar to The Glass Menagerie or Streetcar or Summer and Smoke. Kazan and the actors were very excited to be breaking new ground.

SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 | LadueNews.com

“Eli Wallach told me on the phone, in the 1980s, they were shocked after they opened in Washington that not everyone shared their pleasure in it.” Ultimately, negative reviews led Williams to revise Camino Real for its 1953 publication by the esteemed independent publishing company New Directions – making Ten Blocks an arcane antecedent of an already lesserknown entry in Williams’ oeuvre. If Ten Blocks recalls the relationship of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Trimalchio to The Great Gatsby, though, it similarly has enjoyed more than a little attention over time. In 1966, for example, a television adaptation starred none other than Martin Sheen – a mere three years into his distinguished film and television career. Carrie Houk, the local festival’s executive artistic director, describes the level of excitement surrounding the production. “Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis is thrilled to launch the U.S. tour of the National Drama Company of Ghana,” she says. “We continue to build our friendship with the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival and hope for continued collaboration.” She also sketches what led the local festival (now observing just its second year of existence) to host Kaplan and the Ghanaians, with a grant from PNC Arts Alive and, from Webster University, housing sponsorship for the visiting 12-member troupe. “The Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis believes the work of Tennessee Williams speaks to all cultures and nationalities,” Houk says. “We thought that this particular production illustrates this for St. Louis audiences and would make his work attractive and stimulating for all. “We’re offering this world-class production and workshops for schools and community groups free of charge. We want to make sure that the production is accessible and available to audiences that might not have the opportunity to experience live theater. … “The company will also be doing a performance at Webster University, conversations with students who have attended the Webster U campus in Accra [the capital of Ghana] and students who might be interested in studying abroad in the future in Accra. They will also spend an afternoon in workshops with the Webster U Conservatory of Theatre Arts.”

The production, which is free and open to the public, requires no reservations, Houk adds. The company also will present workshops at COCA and Grand Center Arts Academy. Kaplan, for his part, provides greater detail on the involvement in the production of the National Drama Company of Ghana. “In 1997, flying back from Uzbekistan after directing King Lear there, I learned about Ghanaian concert party from someone in the Peace Corps who had seen performances in Ghana,” he says. “Concert party is a form of outdoor theater that combines African stock characters, clowning, singing and dance – and social satire. I love clowning that delivers insight. I thought for years about a suitable text – and it seemed a perfect fit for performing Ten Blocks on the Camino Real.” An American actor named Greg McGoon had worked with Abibigromma, the resident drama troupe of the National Theatre of Ghana since 1991. McGoon introduced Kaplan to that ensemble. Ten Blocks, Kaplan continues, “fit their mission, too, performing popular theater as a way to build community.” Ten Blocks will undergo slight alterations to fit it to a Ghanaian context. Kaplan first directed a concert party production of Ten Blocks in Uruguay, of all places, in 2013. In sum, Kaplan suggests why the new production – which he describes as “brightly colored” and “the simple story of an innocent man caught up in a city of nets” – should intrigue local Williams aficionados and other devoted theatergoers. “In Ten Blocks, Kilroy enters knowing he has a heart so enlarged he will die from one strong kiss,” he says. “Nevertheless, he kisses the Gypsy’s daughter. “First though, he must convince her he is sincere. He asks, does she believe him? ‘For a while,’ she answers. He replies, ‘Everything’s for a while. For a while is the stuff that dreams are made of, baby!’” In short, Ten Blocks – to pay slantwise homage to Williams’ last play, left unfinished at the time of his death in 1983 – promises to be a masque outrageous and austere.
