MCKNIGHT PLACE
Further defining its dedication to serving area seniors, McKnight Place Assisted Living will expand by 90 units in November, Bob Leonard, partner and director of operations of The Gatesworth Communities, relates to LN regular Connie Mitchell.
DINNER & A SHOW Mark Bretz, LN’s “man with the (theatrical) plan,” this week ships out to South Pacific, as STAGES St. Louis concludes its latest season in high style by revisiting Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical about Navy nurse Nellie Forbush.
On the cover 14 As a locally owned, full-service community institution, Reliance Bank is invested in helping the St. Louis community grow and develop. An example of that investment is the bank’s partnership with McClure Engineering, where Reliance helped the company finance its purchase of the historic Cupples 1 building downtown. Pictured on the cover, from left to right, are (front) Norm Toon, Reliance EVP-chief lending officer, and Eric Schactman, P.E., McClure CFO, and (back) Patrick Bowen, Reliance SVP-commercial lender; Phil Wentz, P.E., McClure principal; and Todd Smith, Reliance SVP-senior lending officer. The story appears on page 14. Photo by Sarah Conroy.

We’ve all seen the ads from the retirement communities that extoll the virtues of senior living. Sonja Nelson-Stough and her husband, Larry Stough, visit these places several times a month. They think they’re nice. But Sonja and Larry aren’t there because they want to move in. They come to perform for the residents. Sonja plays the hammered dulcimer, with Larry accompanying her on guitar. Sharing their love of music is something they do in their spare time. But it’s not the only thing. After retiring as a bank trust officer in 2008, Sonja started taking tap and ballroom dance lessons. She has danced competitively for 10 years. In her spare time, she plays golf.
By the way, she’ll turn 77 next year. Larry, meanwhile, isn’t twiddling his thumbs. Just last year, he rode his motorcycle on Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. He’s an amateur photographer who enjoys tennis, golf and scuba. Neither one takes bone density, blood pressure or any other kind of medication.
How do they do it? “It’s easy,” says Sonja. “For the past decade, we’ve begun each week together at 20 Minutes to Fitness.” “This unique, once-a-week, 20-minute workout fuels all our other activities,” says Larry. “It’s safe. It’s medically based. It keeps us young, fit and strong.” “We could not do the things we do without the strength building we get from 20 Minutes to Fitness,” Sonja adds. “It helps us build and maintain a strong core.” In other words, it helps fend off all those things that are leading their peers into retirement community living. There’s one other thing you should know about Sonja: she hates exercising. “We have tried other exercise programs, gyms and classes, and I will not stick with them,” Sonja admits. “I dreaded going.” 20 Minutes to Fitness, she says, is different. “I do my 20 Minutes once a week, and I’m done,” she says. “So this is it for me. Best of all, it works! I saw results in the beginning, and I’m still seeing results today.” If you think you are too old, too out-of-shape or have too many health issues for 20 Minutes to Fitness, think again. Even when Sonja and Larry had casts on their legs, they never missed a session. 20 Minutes to Fitness’ trainers – which include physical therapists and other pros – tailor every workout to your needs and capabilities. Sonja’s friends tell her they wish they had her stamina, balance, flexibility, positive attitude and energy. All she’ll say is, “It’s great to be strong and do the things I love to do. I can honestly say 20 Minutes to Fitness has made the difference.”
As for those retirement homes: they’re a nice place to visit. Larry and Sonja just never hope to live there.
More about Sonja and Larry:
Sonja served as 2013 Ms. Missouri Senior America, competing in the national pageant in New Jersey. Next year she and her husband, Larry, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They have trained together at 20 Minutes to Fitness since 2007.
For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836), Chesterfield (636-536-1504), or Sarasota or Tampa, Fla., or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

or community financial institutions like Reliance Bank, being able to reach out to companies and help them grow is at the core of their belief system. Reliance is a commercial lender to many companies across the St. Louis region, including McClure Engineering. Reliance Bank Chairman and CEO Thomas H. Brouster Sr. says that Reliance and McClure began working together on an acoustical site analysis and again when McClure outgrew its previous office located in south St. Louis. “They found an 80,000-square-foot, six-story building on Clark Avenue that would allow them to house their main operations and utilize the additional space for other tenants,” Brouster says. Built in 1896, the historic Cupples 1 building is part of the National Register of Historic Places and is located just a few blocks from Busch Stadium. Because of its size, McClure was able to work with Reliance on an owner-occupied building deal, where 50 percent or more is owned by the business. Gaines Dittrich, vice chairman and chief credit officer for Reliance, says the partnership with McClure was an outstanding chance for Reliance to support more growth in the community. “[The move] gave McClure the chance to expand and add more engineers,” Dittrich says. “They found a layout in the right space, and their future growth is tied to having the right kind of occupancy. In the process of doing that, they’ve brought additional growth to downtown. We were pleased to be able to accommodate their needs, including the details in relation to their tax abatement structure.” Thomas H. notes that St. Louis’ market depends a great deal on middle market business because it’s very uncommon for large corporations to The Tin Roof located in the McClure Engineering building. | Photo by Sarah Conroy move their headquarters to St. Louis. “We see large corporations being acquired and subsequently moved out of our market,” Toon says. “However, we have been very successful in developing middle market companies to fill in the gaps when the large ones leave. Helping those companies grow, seeing them create jobs, and then watching them become the next great St. Louis business story is what makes our community special. “Helping those middle market businesses grow is vital to Reliance and vital to the economy as a whole, and we want to help them with financing their next step,” Toon says. Brouster notes that being a local bank and being able to personally establish relationships are what sets Reliance apart from bigger, out-of-state institutions. “We’re thrilled about the relationship with McClure, and we’re always looking for midsize companies we can work side by side with,” he says. Eric Schactman, McClure chief financial officer, says working with Reliance was a pleasure and speaks highly of the bank’s efficient, streamlined process: “Like McClure Engineering, Reliance was very detailed and thorough, making sure everything was covered and all the documentation was complete.” Reliance Bank, 10401 Clayton Road, Frontenac, 314-569-7200, reliancebankstl.com

Special auctions took place at intermission, and a very special post-show sparkling wine and dessert reception with the performers took place afterward. Students from the STAGES Performing Arts Academy also performed. Proceeds from the evening benefit the organization’s artistic and educational programs.

BIG FUN EVENT

un was the name of the game as the Young Friends division of the Little Bit Foundation held its Big Fun event in the relatively new event space at 4 Hands Brewing Co. in South City. Guests purchased raffle tickets for prize packages while enjoying food, 4 Hands brews and giant Jenga, vintage video games and Skee-Ball. A DJ had folks dancing into the night. The Little Bit Foundation addresses childhood poverty on multiple levels by providing basic needs for students, the lack of which hampers learning. Once basic needs are met by programs that provide things like winterwear, uniforms, meal kits, eye exams and glasses, backpacks with school supplies and more, then advanced needs can be addressed by programs involving STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), book fairs, mental health curricula and support, and more.

“Pediatric research helps us [at st. Founded by eight pioneering women, St. louis children’s Hospital opened in 1879, with a rented house and 15 beds. it was the first children’s hospital west of the mississippi river and is the seventh oldest in the country. today, the hospital’s clinical and community outreach program annually affects more than 250,000 patients.
The hospital doesn’t stop short at serving St. louis families. it serves children across the world as the pediatric teaching hospital at washington university School of medicine. its nationally recognized programs for physician training and research influence the way medicine is practiced worldwide while bringing in top talent, who offer bold and inventive ideas. Support from the children’s discovery institute recently funded a trial to deliver chemotherapy drugs to a child with an inoperable brain tumor, which was done through the barrier protecting the brain from toxins and directly into his tumor. This kind of complex care requires state-of-the-art medical equipment

and supplies, as well as specialized individuals who form a child’s care team. it also requires facilities and services oriented toward children and their families, who often are going through a traumatic experience and coping with unique psychological and emotional needs. Advancing care for tomorrow’s children is made possible through philanthropy, which covers the cost of programs, services and treatments – especially for those not eligible for reimbursement through insurance companies. it allows St. louis children’s Hospital to make decisions according not to what makes fiscal sense but to what’s right for kids.
ON THE BOARD: RETTA LERITz TussEy “i am thrilled to serve as this year’s chair of play date, a highly fun and unique event that will take attendees back to those memorable summer camp days,” retta leritz tussey says. “perhaps the most exciting element of all is the funds raised will benefit pediatric research through the children’s discovery institute. The energy and excitement is something you don’t want to miss!”

A TOUCH OF GLAMOUR By Robyn Dexter
W
hile working on a home in Wildwood, Gina Dill-Thebeau had a client recommend the designer’s work to her mother-in-law. Soon after, Dill-Thebeau Design Company got to work on the mother-in-law’s condo, also in Wildwood. “We started in her living room and dining room, which set the tone for the rest of the house,” Dill-Thebeau says. “She wanted to make the home more glamourous and sophisticated.” In the breakfast room, the existing cabinets didn’t work with the redesigned sections of the condo. The client wanted better storage, so Dill-Thebeau worked with KM Designs to put in big, beautiful cabinetry that’s a focal point in the room. “We connected it to the existing kitchen cabinets and bar area, which we rehabbed into matte black as well,” Dill-Thebeau says. With modern accents and mirrors to make the space look bigger, the redesigned breakfast room is now a glamorous, elegant space.

hey say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and what’s inside the 2017 Ladue News Show House is quite literally – drumroll, please – a second house. Welcome to 110 Dielman Road in Ladue. Originally built in the 1930s, 110 Dielman Road started out as a charming stone cottage featuring a pattern of triangles and horizontal lines in light gray. Decades later, a massive contemporary addition was added, but unlike modern additions built onto the back of a home, this one engulfed the property, leaving the cottage and its stonework as the nucleus for the expansive estate. Today, 110 Dielman Road features four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a half-bathroom throughout its 5,175-square-foot interior. The new exterior features oversize windows framing the view of 2-plus acres of property. Inside, the original stonework abounds, as well as other showstopping design details like multiple vaulted wood-beam ceilings and a cobbled stone-and-marble floor. Ted Wight of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty, the Realtor of the $1.575 million home, says this location is a great fit for the Show House because of its variety of aesthetic and design elements. “There’s a
THIS YEAR’S DESIGNERS Great Room/Foyer Annie Genovese of Forsyth Art Master Suite Teddy Karl and Melissa Hummel of The Great Cover-Up Hearth Room Vicki Dreste of Victoria Dreste Designs
wide assortment of traditional and nontraditional rooms [that] will appeal to all people’s tastes – and it gives designers the ability to be contemporary or traditional,” he says. “I think what the public is going to love is there will be a lot to look at. It’s not just a standard center-hall colonial home. They’ll have all sorts of exciting design choices to experience.” Rooms featured in the 2017 Show House involve both the main floor and the stately lower level. Downstairs, the abode features a variety of modern luxuries including a rec room, wet bar, sauna, wine cellar and bedroom suite. “It has contemporary flair but [a] wonderful traditional feel to it,” Wight says of the estate. Outside features an attached two-car garage, as well as a detached one-car garage with workspace. A large patio nestles into the manicured yet organicfeeling landscaping, but in case that isn’t enough outdoor entertaining space, the home also features an enclosed, open-air courtyard in the center of the home off the great room. This unique space features ample stonework and endless design possibilities. Although many historical details, such as the architects of the home, have been lost over time, Dennis Northcott, associate archivist for reference at the Missouri History Museum, located some information about a few of 110 Dielman Road’s previous owners. “According to the St. Louis County directories – similar to phone books and published almost annually – a man named Russell J. Reitz and his
wife, Mercedes, resided at 110 Dielman from 1940 to 1951,” Northcott says, noting the home was likely built in 1939 and was valued in the 1940 census at $15,000. “Russell Reitz was a stone contractor.” Perhaps this explains the home’s original exterior, still on display in its enclosed, open-air courtyard. Wight estimates the addition was built in the 1980s, which would place it with the next family Northcott found. “Dan Broida and his wife, Roma, resided at 110 Dielman from 1952 to 1985,” Northcott says. Broida – known locally for his work with the chemical company now called Sigma-Aldrich – was described as “the guiding spirit for the company in its early years” in a 2014 column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch by Bill McClellan. Broida served as the company’s first chemical engineer. For the 2017 Show House, local professionals will decorate 11 of the top spaces of 110 Dielman Road. When asked what space he’s most excited to see transformed, Wight says: “My favorite room is the great room, with the timbered ceilings, skylights and windows that look out onto the courtyard and backyard – it’s a very dramatic, large space.” He also mentions the adjoining open-air courtyard, saying, “It’s very unique, and I’m sure it’s going to be exciting.” The Ladue News Show House opens to the public for tours from Oct. 7 to 22 (closed on Mondays) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more or to buy tickets, visit laduenews.com.

To ensure quality customer service in a dynamic environment, Bernard has built a team to focus on delivering great service, using their collective knowledge to provide clients with results. Bernard is a native St. Louisan whose focus lies primarily in the central corridor and in second-home sales at Innsbrook Resort, where she owns three vacation getaways of her own. She earned an MBA from the executive program at Washington University and honed her skills at The Fabulous Fox Theatre and Ralston Purina Company. Her unique skillset enables her to provide exceptional service, with a businessminded approach founded on smart financial strategy. His success in the industry allowed him to pursue his real passion: real estate. A real estate investor, Lottmann is known for buying, renovating and reselling properties of all types. In 2002, he turned his passion into a career by founding Lottmann Realty Group. In addition to the luxury housing market, Lottmann’s expertise includes lot location for clients and builders, and multi-family apartments. His business and practical expertise differentiate him from the competition. Acting as an advocate and advisor for each client, Lottmann is committed to client satisfaction and matching people with property opportunities. As a result, he is the go-to agent for many families and residential and commercial real estate investors throughout the course of their lives. are native
St. Louisans who form a mother-daughter team. Top producers at Laura McCarthy Real Estate, they successfully represent both sellers and buyers throughout the St. Louis metro area. Sue is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, and her daughter, Katie, graduated from Saint Louis University. Katie grew up in her mother’s office at McLaughlin Real Estate, the family business. Later, when Sue joined Laura McCarthy, her daughter, who was finishing college, got her own real estate license to help on weekends. It soon became clear Katie was a bona fide natural in the real estate business. It wasn’t too surprising, considering that, even in the second grade, she was the only student who knew what a contingency meant. Both mother and daughter feel invigorated at being able to help clients. Those they’ve helped seem to return to them time after time. As one current client reminded them, they have represented her in nine different residential real estate transactions. Sue and Katie continue to prove they are caring, hardworking agents who earn their clients’ respect and loyalty.

Allie Rossini & Alison Schneider
With the motto
“going beyond the usual expectations,” Allie Rossini and Alison Schneider set the bar high when it comes to delivering clients their real estate dreams. The team achieves those goals through top-notch service and a unique understanding of St. Louis neighborhoods. Rossini had a taste of the housing industry from an early age. Her father worked as a real estate attorney and her mother as an interior designer. Her husband also works in commercial real estate. “It was a natural career for me,” she says. When Schneider decided to return to work after raising her sons, personal experience with transitioning to a new home drew her to the housing industry. “Since I have moved multiple times – I’m on my seventh state and ninth house! – real estate felt like the right fit [for me],” she says. Both Rossini and Schneider are relocation-certified and specialize in the central corridor, including Clayton, Ladue, Webster, University City and Des Peres, with the ability to represent clients all across the St. Louis area. In a marriage of 15 years, Rossini is raising three boys, who range in ages from 9 to 13 years old, with all attending Clayton schools. She and her family reside in the neighborhood of Davis Place. In a marriage of 23 years, Schneider has three boys as well, two at Clayton High School and the other one in college. She and her family reside in the Claverach Park neighborhood. They both are involved with their local schools and enjoy spending time with their families.

marketing. His website, stlouis.style, exceeds 1,000 hits per day, and this year, he launched three new sites: laduestyle.com, claytonstyle. com and cwestyle.com – all of which are connectable through Instagram and Facebook. Public relations is also important to Wight’s sales arsenal. His properties have been feature in The New York Times, The Week, St. Louis Magazine, “Curbed,” HGTV and more. Events play into the marketing mix, with his listings serving as venues to launch cars and television shows, as well as host performances and cocktail receptions. He will proudly host his fourth Show House with Ladue News, including this year’s listing at 110 Dielman. Wight has developed a niche over the years, specializing in architecturally significant homes that range from historic mansions to contemporary homes. He lives in a Ladue home designed by noted architect William Bernoudy, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. He shares a country property with his family in Pike County, Missouri, where he enjoys gardening and restoring a 1850s farmhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wight grew up in Ladue, where he attended St. Louis Priory. His education continued at Lake Forest College on the north shore of Chicago. He received his executive MBA from Washington University’s Olin School of Business. Wight has two sons, Ted and Nick, who are pursuing degrees in medicine and law. In his off-time, he enjoys traveling, gardening, cooking and serving on various charity committees.

Q&A
WITH AUDRA NOYES OF AUDRA By Julia Cain Audra Noyes, owner and creative director of luxury fashion line AUDRA, delivered the figurative “Checkmate!” as she recently took home the championship in the Pinned! Designer Chess Challenge. As a member of the Saint Louis Fashion Incubator inaugural class, this Delaware native competed against other incubator designers to create two chess-inspired looks: something practical and something a touch more creative. Ladue News caught up with the winning designer to find out more. You recently won the Pinned! Designer Chess Challenge. Congratulations! What did you create and why? In the Pinned! challenge, I created two pieces, one being the first uniform for chess and the second being an avant-garde, more fashion-forward piece inspired by the game of chess. For me personally, I chose to create a jacket as my uniform piece that was the primary focus … My avant-garde piece was a tea-length gown inspired by the colliding of the rook and the bishop, which in essence was the formation of the queen. How is your experience with the Saint Louis Fashion Incubator going? The incubator has been great. I love working amongst the other designers as well as the incubator team. It’s a great community where we’re really supporting and learning from one another. St. Louis is definitely a big shift, but I’m loving it thus far. Has your work changed or grown since you began working with the group? Specifically working in St. Louis within the incubator has given the exposure to interact with my client or my consumer on a daily basis through the retail opportunity of the space, and I think that has really informed my design. It has helped me learn what fit, fabrics and silhouettes really speak to my clients, what price points work for them, and I think that has helped me grow not only as a designer but as a businesswoman. What other projects are you working on right now? Right now, I just finished up shooting my spring/ summer 2018 collection, which debuted [Sept. 6] at New York Fashion Week. I’m working right now on the presentation that I’m doing and finishing up the collection for market as well. I’m also working on the production of fall ’17 so it just shipped to stores, so I’m working on now getting it launched on the e-commerce and getting it back to St. Louis to sell. It’s kind of two collections in tangency – they overlap. It keeps it exciting, for sure.

How do you describe your overall sense of design? The AUDRA mission was to be an advocate for females in the arts and to redefine the standard of beauty through ethical, luxury clothing. The aesthetic is very much using the ease and comfort of American sportswear with the allure of European couture. You’ll see the training from SCAD [Georgia’s
Savannah College of Art and Design, from which she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree] fused with my apprenticeships and time in Paris in each piece, and it’s all composed of European materials, and it’s all developed and sewn in New York City.

Legendary Leadership
T
he St. Louis region recently lost one of its legendary leaders: Emerson CEO Chuck Knight. As a businessman, Knight built a global powerhouse at Emerson, one of St. Louis’ enduring success stories. However, his contributions to our region went far beyond the boardroom. Through personal and corporate philanthropy, as well as a willingness to take on civic causes, he worked tirelessly to make his adopted hometown a better place for all of us. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the meaning of leadership and its purpose in our world. When reading the flood of tributes to Knight that stress honesty, passion and commitment, I fear those qualities too often appear to be sorely lacking in America today – yet they remain vital components of leadership. The times we live in demand our leaders possess not only vision and the ability to expand the bottom line but also equal parts integrity and trustworthiness. The lack of trustworthiness among today’s leaders has become both pervasive and pernicious. We may trust the system, the data and the (hopefully not “alternative”) facts, but we just don’t trust one another anymore. That has fostered a growing fear and increasing suspicion of our
leaders – corporate, political, educational and religious – whose intentions and actions are routinely questioned. Add to that a growing “integrity gap” in which leaders don’t always do what they say and say what they do, and we’re left with a leadership crisis of sorts. Meanwhile, the leaders who do embody the right qualities and embrace new ways of doing things are viewed as threats to the system. Rather than embrace those leaders who seek to take measured risks and create dynamic new opportunities, we tend to question their loyalty and true intent. The very definition of leadership demands that a leader possess the courage and conviction to overturn the status quo if doing so benefits an organization’s best interests. Knight understood that. He lived in two worlds – the present and the future – and both were equally important. Effective leaders like him comfortably challenge conventional wisdom. A leader must be authentic and believable. Leadership based on hope is no leadership at all. A transformational leader must convey, with confidence, the path to the future. Leadership should be measured not by how many followers a leader has, but by how many of those followers eventually become leaders themselves. Such true empowerment, built on trust and commitment,
By Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande
yields an unshakable foundation. I studied leadership for decades. I am more keenly aware than ever that we need leaders who willingly put the good of their individual organization, community, state or country above the security of their own position. Leaders like Knight have shown us that integrity, compassion, courage and commitment remain essential qualities in those we entrust with our work, our votes and even our lives. Isn’t it time we demand nothing less?

H
igh school seniors, it’s crunch time for those college application essays – so what better time to share tips on how to be most effective? What you write in your essay has become increasingly important in terms of admission. Some colleges are blunt when saying a real person will be reading this. But remember, colleges truly want to know who you are and why you are interested in attending them. Tip 1. Resist the urge to sound too formal. Good grammar and thoughtful writing count. However, make sure your true self shines through without too many toots to your own horn. It is important to instill confidence while remaining humble. Tip 2. Have a focus. You are not going to explain your whole life in 650 words, so don’t try. Choose a topic that reflects who you are while sharing your goals as a student on the college’s campus. What inspires your intellectual curiosity? Tip 3. Focus on the message, not the word count. Unnecessary worry about word count can be self-defeating, sometimes leading to a self-imposed writer’s block! I commonly hear: “But Mrs. Murray, if I try to tell that story, it will be too long!” Baloney. Write the real story first, then we’ll cut it to the necessary word count, whatever it may be. Nine out of 10 times, it’s better shorter, anyway. Tip 4. Don’t get bogged down with too much grammar right out the gate. Remember, you can always edit later. Prove early on you can write a simple declarative sentence with active verbs, then start mixing it up: Vary sentence length to add suspense, use exclamations to show emotion and use semicolons sparingly. Tip 5. Avoid clichés. If your essay is the 20th essay a recruiter has read that day, he or she likely doesn’t want to hear about how you gained independence when learning to drive or how bad you felt when your dog passed away. Everybody feels that. Surprise the recruiter instead. Grab his or her attention and keep it for increased chances.

Closer to the Final Cup
T
he summer just past continued eventfully for St. Louis golfers showing how well they can play. In August, for instance, at the 23rd annual Fore State Championship, Missouri’s golf team defended its title. Clinging to a two-point lead after the first day’s better ball and alternate shot matches, Missouri earned nine of 12 possible points in singles play on the competition’s second day, extending its team title status in the meet at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club in Joplin. Missouri finished with 17 points, followed by Kansas and Oklahoma with 11.5 apiece and Arkansas with eight. That title, Missouri’s eighth in tournament history, ranks the team second only to Oklahoma, with 10 crowns. Junior Amateur Golf Max Kreikemeier of Wildwood’s Lafayette High School and Crimson Callahan of St. Louis’ Chaminade College Preparatory School played in the 42nd Boys Junior PGA Championship at the Country Club of St. Albans; however, neither made the cut in the PGA event. Kreikemeier finished his two rounds in the PGA Junior with a 6-over 150. He was 5-over 77 in the second round after opening with a 1-over 73 in the first round.
By Warren Mayes place, while Team Alabama took the trophy. Weaver picked up two points for Missouri. He won the alternate shot match with Amber Wilson, who will be a senior at Camdenton High School. The duo defeated Alabama’s Connor Newton and Jordan Susce 2-up. Weaver won his singles match 6-and-4 against Josh McNulty of Arkansas. Weaver and Allison Bray, who will be a senior at Cape Girardeau Notre Dame, lost 4-and-3 to Arkansas’ Josie Roberson and Josh McNulty in a four-ball match.
2017 Fore State Missouri Team
“It was a great experience,” Kreikemeier reflects. “It was one of the best fields that junior golf sees. It shows I can compete with most of these guys when I’m playing well, but [it] also shows I have a long way to go to be able to really contend with the top juniors in the country.” Callahan, of Chesterfield, shot a 10-over 156 during the first two rounds. He posted a triple bogey on the 18th hole in the second round and failed to make the cut. Meanwhile, Saint Louis Priory School’s Peter Weaver belonged to the Missouri team competing in Southern States Junior Cup matches. Weaver and Ozark’s Dawson Meek ranked as the youngest players for Team Missouri, with the other golfers either incoming seniors or recent graduates. Team Missouri finished with 7.5 points, for fourth
Wallis Tournament In June, the Bill Wallis Charitable Foundation’s 16th annual Bill Wallis Classic again raised money for scholarships to deserving students. The classic took place at Country Club of St. Albans. A total of 288 golfers, vendors, sponsors, colleagues, friends and family assembled for a day of sports, auctions, fun, food and friendship – all celebrating Wallis’ life and legacy. “This annual golf event is a fitting tribute to Bill, who lost his battle with melanoma in 2001,” says his wife, Lynn Wallis. “The Bill Wallis Charitable Foundation was established at that time. To date, we have awarded more than $222,000 in scholarships to 82 deserving students.”

rowing older doesn’t have to mean giving up the good life. In fact, St. Louis seniors are about to have another option for living well as they age, at McKnight Place Assisted Living. Ninety new apartments are under construction and will open in November with lush finishes and three different floor plans that offer seniors the standard of living they deserve. Custom wood cabinets, granite countertops, high ceilings, crown molding and large windows to let in plenty of natural light are a few of the amenities included. Once the new apartments open, the 45 existing assisted living rooms will be closed for a five-month renovation. “When completed, we will have 18 additional assisted living apartments and 27 memory-care suites,” says Bob Leonard, partner and director of operations of The Gatesworth Communities. “The memory-care units will surround a beautiful patio garden area that can be accessed from the dining rooms and the bistro. Residents will be able to walk the common spaces of the new memory-care [facility] and never be frustrated by running into a dead-end wall. The building is designed with a safe, continuous walking path.” Each apartment, ranging from 420 to 785 square feet, is customizable to its occupant’s needs and tastes. McKnight Place staff help individuals create a plan for their new home using their furnishings and preferred colors to re-create a familiar living space. “Or we can help them find a whole new design scheme,” Leonard says. “We strive to make each resident’s experience at McKnight Place as close to home as possible.” Beyond residents’ front doors, McKnight Place Assisted Living’s expansion will also include lush landscaping with numerous walking paths, multiple dining areas, a new theater, spacious sitting areas and a salon and spa. Although the surroundings are important to residents’ well-being, Leonard points out the most significant feature is the Forget-Me-Not Program, which is also used at Parc Provence memory-care facility in Creve Coeur. “This program has individualized activity and event programs to fit the individual resident’s likes and desires,” Leonard says. “There will be many different choices for residents, including music and art therapy.” All residents will have ample opportunity to enjoy one another’s company and participate in activities and events designed for a wide range of interests. “McKnight Place Assisted Living is on The Gatesworth campus, where we have a full continuum of care: independent-living apartments, assisted-living apartments, skilled-nursing suites, therapy services, Medicare rehab, and next spring we will have memory care,” Leonard says. “Our campus can handle the lifestyles of all seniors, even as their needs change. The campus is designed to access all of the communities without ever going outside.” Leonard notes that staying active physically, socially and mentally is a goal and a lifestyle for McKnight Place residents. With this in mind, staffers provide exercise classes, movie nights, discussion groups, dance classes, happy hours and more. Guest speakers often visit from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo, he adds. Living near peers and participating in opportunities for this kind of group interaction may have significant positive outcomes. According to the National Institute on Aging, “Several research studies have shown a strong correlation between social interaction and health and well-being among older adults, and [the studies] have suggested that social isolation may have significant adverse effects for older adults.” The staffers helping to provide this ongoing social interaction and support at McKnight Place Assisted Living are dedicated to the residents, Leonard adds, noting that many have been so employed for more than 25 years. “We’re not part of a big national chain,” he says. “We have been providing assisted living in St. Louis for more than 25 years. We’re locally owned and operated. Our owners’ offices are on-site, and they know many of our residents and families by name. We’re committed to quality and details that set McKnight Place apart.” The new expansion is a continuation of the mission of McKnight Place, Leonard says. “We view McKnight Place’s Assisted Living expansion as an opportunity to continue our legacy of unparalleled service but within upgraded settings. As our community grows, so, too, does our uncompromising dedication to the comfort and care of our residents.”

occupied by Einstein’s Bagels, as well as the space next door. At roughly 3,800 square feet, it seats 85, which is 20 more than Katie’s Rock Hill location. A large patio/ garden wraps around the front of the building, offering additional seating. The dining area features what Katie Collier describes as an eclectic yet polished look, with Scandinavian design elements mixed with nostalgic pieces from her family’s former Clayton-area restaurant. Art pieces by Ted Collier and Collier’s mother, Belinda Lee, adorn the walls. From the kitchen, guests can find all of their favorites from the Rock Hill location via a shared
menu, which will continue to change seasonally. The open kitchen also features a dough room, where guests can see pizza, handmade stuffed pastas and more made on-site. Guests can choose from popular dishes such as black spaghetti with squid-ink spaghetti, prawns, scallops, clams, caviar and chili flake. Katie’s signature fiori noodle is another highlight in the fiori arrabiatta with its spicy sauce (of garlic, tomatoes and dried red chilis cooked in olive oil) and arugula. Another favorite is squash blossom pizza with San Marzano red sauce, burrata cheese, cherry tomato, fresh oregano and lemon.

Other dishes Katie Collier recommends as crowd favorites are the watermelon salad with watercress, ricotta salata, oil-cured olives, pine nuts, mint and balsamic; Neapolitan meatballs with San Marzano sauce and Parmigiano; and Collier’s famous fried artichokes with balsamic and stracciatella – all items that sound like delectable delights before catching South Pacific from STAGES St. Louis. “We’re really dedicated to keeping the spirit of the original [Katie’s] and making our focus on incredible product, technique and service,” Katie Collier says. “We’re excited to get better and better every day.”

Story: Nellie Forbush, a Navy nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, is assigned to a naval outpost on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. She’s mutually attracted to an expatriate French plantation owner, Emile de Becque. Eventually, she learns he’s a widower to a Polynesian woman who bore him two children. The outpost greets a young Marine, Lt. Joseph Cable, who’s been sent to coordinate a dangerous undercover mission to a nearby island that could turn the war against Japan. He’s welcomed by a feisty native entrepreneur named Bloody Mary, who sizes Cable up as a suitable husband for her daughter, Liat. When Forbush subsequently turns down de Becque, he volunteers to assist Cable on the mission, feeling he has less to live for than he had hoped. Their heavy hearts may carry the seeds to the ultimate success of their mission – and the fate of the war in the Pacific theater. Highlights: More timely than ever, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s perennially popular South Pacific receives a strong interpretation from STAGES St. Louis to close the company’s 2017 season on a high note. Other Info: STAGES artistic director Michael Hamilton provides expert direction and musical staging for his company’s second presentation (the first in 25 years) of one of Broadway’s most successful musicals ever. A strong cast, spirited choreography and smooth pacing make this version of South Pacific an engaging exercise for ensemble and audience alike. South Pacific’s original run lasted 1,925 performances from its premiere in 1949, winning 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Libretto and all four acting categories, the only musical ever to mark such an achievement. Featuring a score by Rodgers, lyrics by Hammerstein II and a book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, it also enjoyed a revival on Broadway in 2008, which closed just short of 1,000 additional performances. Leah Berry’s performance as Forbush is powerful – both in her singing and in her vibrant portrayal of the good-hearted nurse who faces her own prejudices thousands of miles from home, becoming a better person for it. Her full-throated soprano carries the day on “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy” and others from the hit-filled score. Berry enjoys an easy chemistry with Michael Halling in the role of de Becque, even if he doesn’t appear to match the age of the 44-year-old “ancient” de Becque in the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by James Michener that inspired the musical, Tales of the South Pacific. Halling has a pleasing voice, though, making “Some
By Mark Bretz
Enchanted Evening” a lilting pleasure and “This Nearly Was Mine” a heartfelt ballad. Matthew Hydzik as Cable has the looks and serious countenance to suggest that Cable comes from the patrician stock of a stuffy Eastern family, along with a powerful voice that conveys all the emotion behind the beautiful ballad “Younger Than Springtime,” which Cable sings to Liat. Joanne Javien is a spitfire of humor and sass as the irrepressible Bloody Mary, crooning the show standard “Bali Ha’i” with verve and passion, while equally convincing in her badinage with Mark DiConzo as the wheeler-dealer Seabee Luther Billis. Javien and DiConzo share the majority of the show’s laughs with their exuberant portrayals, which balance the show’s more poignant moments. Local favorites John Flack and Steve Isom carry their share of the comedy as well, as Capt. George “Iron Belly” Brackett and his second-in-command, Cmdr. William Harbison, respectively. Hammerstein tackled the injustices of bigotry head-on with his story based on the equally knowledgeable work by Michener. Add Rodgers’ tender ballads and rowdy ensemble pieces, and it’s easy to see why South Pacific has stood the test of time so well.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne
2014 POLIZIANO, VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO – TUSCANY, ITALY Grapes: Sangiovese, colorino, canaiolo and merlot Owner/Winemaker: Federico Carletti Aged: 14 to 16 months in oak barrels; one-third in traditional large oak barrels and two-thirds in French oak Approximate Retail Price: $28 TASTING NOTES: Color: Ruby red with purple highlights Aroma: Cherry with notes of savory spice and balsamic Taste: Bold forward red fruits with ample mouthfeel, savory freshness and good balance of acidity and moderate tannins for a nice length and persistence
I
n 1961, desiring to reconnect with his cultural heritage by cultivating wine, Dino Carletti bought 22 hectares in Montepulciano, Siena, in Italy’s Tuscany
region. His son, Federico Carletti, who grew up tending the vines, pursued an agriculture degree in Florence, Italy, to continue the family business. The estate subsequently grew to 120 hectares and expanded to the Maremma (an area of west-central Italy) along the coast of Tuscany, home of “super Tuscans.” Vino Nobile di Montepulcino is often overshadowed by Brunello di Montalcino, which is produced about 20 miles across the valley. Brunello is 100 percent sangiovese (Grosso clone), and Vino Nobile di Montepulcino is a minimum 70 percent sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile clone) with other local varietals, with a minimum of one year in oak and one in the bottle before release. Vino Nobile di Montepulcino should not be confused with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, an appellation (denominazione di origine controllata, or DOC) farther south in central Italy. Sangiovese grapes
have several clones, which produce different flavor profiles. They also number among Italy’s most widely planted red grapes, mostly grown in central Italy. Sangiovese can still thrive in drought conditions, requiring little irrigation. Its high acidity and tannin levels give it the ability to age. It also functions as a good blending grape; in fact, super Tuscans originated by adding merlot or cabernet sauvignon like tignanello and sassicaia. Sangiovese is the darling of Tuscany, so those desiring a great wine without the price point of brunello should consider this a must-try – cheers! Food Pairings: This wine nicely complements sausage, grilled steak, hard cheeses, and pasta with tomato sauce, meat sauce or both.

s we ride the elevator down from our Airbnb apartment, a 40-something man gets on. A few floors later, he says: “It’s nice to hear Americans [talking]. I’m American, too. You will love Cape Town. I’ve been here three years.” The elevator doors open at the lobby. Our new friend leaves us with a restaurant recommendation and a parting wish: “Enjoy yourselves.” It’s almost impossible to imagine anyone not enjoying Cape Town, South Africa. The only problem is time – or a lack thereof. We were coming off a 16-day safari and had only four nights to enjoy the city. That’s not nearly enough for a destination with such diverse attractions. One of the newest is the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, which has its grand opening from Sept. 22 to 25. The more than 100,000-square-foot museum is spread over nine floors of a former grain silo complex and will be the first home for African contemporary art on the continent. A ferry ride to Robben Island is a must. This is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment at the hands of the apartheid government. The prison tour is led by another former political prisoner. As he walks us through the building and answers questions, his experiences and emotions still seem fresh, even though he has been free for decades. The tour is as powerful and emotional an experience as it is educational. Back on the mainland, one of the biggest attractions is the country’s booming wine industry. South Africa is the world’s seventh-largest producer, with wine grapes growing in the country since the 17th century. U.S. consumers couldn’t buy South African wines until after apartheid ended in 1999. As a result, many Americans know little about them. So when in Cape Town, one definitely should go to some of the districts

of the Western Cape Winelands, one of the country’s best wine-producing areas, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Hire a driver (my recommendation – Tray Hawley, info@africandestinationtravel.com) and book a lunch with wine tastings. You will find that many varietals are produced, but Pinotage and Chenin Blanc probably dominate. Pinotage, in fact, was created in South Africa in 1925 by crossing French varietals Pinot Noir and Cinsault. But first, before lunch and wine tastings, stretch your legs on the quaint main street of Franschhoek, originally settled by French Huguenot refugees in 1688. Then go for a tasting at the beautiful La Motte wine estate (la-motte.co.za). A reservation isn’t necessary. For lunch, we drive a short distance to Stellenbosch and Clos Malverne Wine Estate (closmalverne.co.za). The menu for the four-course lunch with wine pairings stimulates the imagination and appetite. The tab, even with four wines, costs less than $33. Unbelievable. And the view is equally stupendous – outside floor-to-ceiling windows, the Clos Malverne vineyard stretches into the distance, beautifully framed by the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch mountains. Once you’ve recovered from wine-country indulgences and are back in Cape Town, there are even more attractions to fit in your schedule. Shopping, for example. The Victoria & Albert Waterfront has more than 450 retail outlets. However, you can have more fun shopping in the city center’s Green Market, first built in 1696, a former slave market and, later, fruit and vegetable market. Today, vendors have crafts and arts from all over Africa, and everyone negotiates or, more accurately, haggles. With a bit of bargaining, you can find high-quality place mats in the
Storyy aand photos by hur H Hoffman Arthur
Green Market for about $2, a midsize mask from Ghana for $20 and art on canvas for less than $15. If you’re feeling a bit peckish from shopping, take a short stroll from Green Market to the venerable Mount Nelson Hotel (belmond.com/mount-nelson-hotel-cape-town) for its traditional high tea. Once restored, you can tour the hotel’s current art exhibition. The central city offers many historic attractions. One example is the District Six Museum (districtsix.co.za), which preserves the history of the forced eviction by the apartheid government of 60,000 African residents so that whites could move into the area. The museum has historic accounts of the eviction and artifacts from the original black residents. A popular recreation destination is Cape Point Nature Reserve, about 40 miles southwest of Cape Town. Here is fynbos, a feathered-leaf, heatherlike vegetation found only at the southern tip of Africa. Of the world’s six floral biomes, this is the smallest but richest in number of endemic species. You also might see mountain zebra, antelope and, more likely, baboons. If you have more time to explore, the Garden Route is about 180 miles long from western to eastern Cape Town. It encompasses 10 nature reserves and a variety of sea life including, from July to December, calving southern right whales, an endangered species. Cape Town has something for every taste. What the visitor lacks is enough time to experience it all. That’s probably why the American expat from the elevator moved here. And it’s why we’ll definitely return.
ZeitZ MuseuM of ConteMporary art afriCa Africa has many talented contemporary artists, but until this month, its major metropolitan areas have lacked truly great museums in which to exhibit their work. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (zeitzmocaa.museum) will change that when it opens Sept. 22. With the mission “to collect, preserve, research and exhibit cutting edge contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, …” the Zeitz has 80 galleries spread across nine floors of what formerly was a grain silo complex on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. The British architect who designed the space is Thomas Heatherwick. The Zeitz name comes from founder Jochen Zeitz, who, at 30, was the youngest CEO of a major public corporation (Puma) in Germany and who started collecting African art in 2002. Today, he works with Sir Richard Branson on big-idea projects. The Zeitz certainly qualifies. photo above: The multifloor, 100,000-square-foot Zeitz Museum of contemporary Art Africa with several floors of a luxe hotel and restaurant/bar over the museum. WHERE TO STAY [2] [3]
Airbnb offers many possibilities. We stayed in a two-level penthouse apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, $185 a night (airbnb.com/rooms/2480340). Mount Nelson Hotel, a Belmond property, (76 Orange St., Gardens, 800-237-1236, reservationsmnh@belmond.com) has doubles from $390 a night, plus breakfast. The Silo Hotel, a Royal Portfolio property (Silo Square, V&A Waterfront, 27 (0) 21 671 5502, reservations@trp.travel), on floors above the Zeitz, has a standard double from about $860 with breakfast, museum entrance and complimentary minibar soft drinks, wine and beer.
WHERE TO EAT Kloof Street House (30 Kloof St., Gardens, 27 22 423 4413, info@kloofstreethouse.co.za) is fine dining with a brasserie-style menu in a Victorian house and garden. Pigalle (57A Somerset Road, Green Point, 27 21 421 4343, capetown@pigallerestaurants.co.za) is the place if you fancy live soft jazz and excellent seafood for dinner. The restaurant is situated in an extremely large venue that somehow manages personal and attentive service.
[4]
Savoy Cabbage (101 Hout St., 27 21 424 2626, info@savoycabbage.co.za) pays delicious attention to detail in an 18th-century warehouse with exposed brick walls adorned with modern art and cabbage-motif chandeliers. The cooking is European with an emphasis on fresh local produce. The wine list is well curated and features very reasonable price points.
WINERIES TO VISIT Clos Malverne’s (Devon Road, Stellenbosch, [7] 021 865 2022, info@closmalverne.co.za) four-course tasting menu is excellent, beautifully presented and an incredible value. Executive chef Nadia Louw Smith describes her approach as “world food with earthy sophistication.” She includes some South African game such as spring bok and fish such as snoek found in South African waters. The estate also has a tasting room, day spa and luxury accommodations.
[5]
La Motte Wine Estate (R45 regional road, Franschhoek, 27 21 876 8000, info@la-motte.co.za) features lush grounds and a welcoming tasting room serving high-quality wines, as well as a restaurant, farm shop, hiking trail and museum featuring the work of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef.
ATTRACTIONS [6]
Tickets to District Six Museum (25A Buitekant St., reception@districtsix.co.za) are about $2.50 each or about $3.50 for a tour guided by a former resident of the neighborhood. In the 1960s, more than 60,000 Africans were forcibly evicted from the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town by the apartheid government so that whites could live in the area. This museum documents that mass eviction with artifacts from former residents and historic accounts. Robben Island Museum and Ferry has morning and afternoon sailings from Mandela Gateway at the Robben Island Museum on the V&A Waterfront. Tickets are available online or at the museum for about $22. Tours take four hours, including the ferry ride (webtickets.co.za).

[2]Every dish at Clos Malverne Wine Estate outside Stellenbosch is delicious and beautifully presented. [3] Bo Kaap is one of Cape Town’s more colorful neighborhoods. Formerly the Malay Quarter, today it is a multicultural area known for colorful homes and cobblestone streets. [4] The iconic clock tower on Cape Town’s thriving Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Ships come here for repair and renovation, and shoppers and diners flock here for some 450 outlets. T
ake a trip around the world to discover different tastes and flavors – all without leaving St. Louis. One neighborhood restaurant and butcher shop in Ladue promotes palate exploration at such a sensational level as to receive worldwide recognition. “We may be a small neighborhood place on one hand … You know what to expect when it comes to service, food and drink,” Aleksandar Jovanovic, general manager and wine director at Truffles & Butchery, says. “On the other hand, though, we are versatile and attuned to the community we serve. We offer a broad range of items on our ever-changing menu.” Truffles & Butchery sources directly from its recently acquired farm to create fresh cuisine. “We try to be seasonal but don’t limit ourselves in any way,” Jovanovic explains. “That means there’s no limit to what you can experience at Truffles. We constantly add something new.” It’s that inventive spin that brings in both regulars and new clientele. The restaurant’s setting also proves another draw. “Our patio is secluded, with farm-sourced vegetables and herbs in customdesigned, in-house planters,” Jovanovic notes. “It’s

become a wonderful little addition. We have fans for warm weather and heaters for colder weather. Plus, it can seat up to 40 people. We have plans for the next several seasons, so its constant evolution will
continue to attract.” Truffles & Butchery incorporates items of interest found at food and wine markets from around the globe to diversify its menus. The restaurant and shop recently received recognition for its outstanding wine collection: a Jury Prize 3-star award from the

London publication The World of Fine Wine. “It’s a dream come true,” Jovanovic says. “There are only 50 in the North American continent and 112 selected worldwide from over 5,000 applicants. To be included in such company is truly special. We’ve been [earning] this top-notch award since its inception four years ago. It’s a phenomenal feeling, and we’re just riding that highway right now.” For those wishing to whip up their own unique meal, the Butchery proves a vital source for fresh meats, seafood, breads, cheeses, vegetables and more. Choose your recipe, pick up delectable ingredients and snag a bottle of vino to impress friends and family. “You can go into any decent restaurant and get your favorites – and we provide that in spades more than anybody else,” Jovanovic comments. “If you want to experience something unusual and off the beaten path, though … something that may be recognized in the next five to 10 years, we offer that as well. You don’t have to travel to find it. This unassuming neighborhood nook has it on offer, which makes us special.”

The bold new exterior design and interior advancements, including the connectivity of Porsche Connect, are complimented with a powerful 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine that delivers 550 horsepower.
