Your small business doesn’t have to stay that way.

‌What inspired your column this week? PAUL BROWN The great thing about writing my column is that I’m able to tell stories about people I really like, and I’ve always admired the dedication of Dan Buck (p. 58).

Let’s start growing.

RUSSELL HYKEN My inspiration for this week’s column is the impending Halloween holiday (p. 59). Parents should make frequent connections with their children, and Halloween offers an opportunity to talk about many things – costumes, peer perceptions and candy.

from the

Editor ‌In this week’s Landscape column (p. 16), Patricia Raven explains why now is the best time to move your plants indoors, long before the first frost comes and potentially damages them. So it’s time to dust off the baker’s racks and plant stands, and make way for the greenery that will soon brighten up corners you didn’t even realize were bare. As Raven astutely remarks, the growing season doesn’t have to end for your potted plants when the temperatures drop; it just moves inside. Summer may be associated with longer days and outdoor activity, but I’ve always felt a little creative spark that comes on when the leaves begin to fall. Perhaps its because the quieter time spent indoors leaves more room for contemplative thought, or maybe the darker evenings just keep some of the distractions out of my frame of vision. It’s the time when theater seasons are in full swing, the thought-provoking Oscar contenders start showing at the movies and evenings at the park are traded for nights inside curled up with a good book. As the temperatures drop, many aspects of our lives move from the outdoors, indoors. It’s an opportunity to brighten up corners of our minds that we didn’t even realize were bare.

Fair Saint Louis will return to Forest Park for the third year in a row next summer, organizers of the iconic July 4 celebration recently announced. Plans are already underway for the three-day event, which will take place from July 2 through July 4. Continuing renovations at the Gateway Arch grounds have dislocated the fair from its traditional home. The 2015 event hosted an estimated 250,000 to 275,000 fairgoers, who enjoyed 14 bands and solo performers, as well as nightly firework displays, food, a zip line and other attractions. For the latest updates on next year’s festivities, visit fairsaintlouis.org.

become independent, they need to be able to make their own decisions,” Pearson says. The Safe Haven staff includes an occupational therapist, a social worker who is a licensed substance abuse counselor, a nurse and housing specialists, Pearson says. Safe Haven took on its first residents about this time last year and has had great success with the program in the past year, he notes. One of Safe Haven’s first tenants was Couresa Atkins, whose life has drastically changed for the better since she enrolled in the program. Atkins says she had a great life growing up in St. Louis County but ended up in an abusive marriage that she eventually ran from. “When I ran, I didn’t have anywhere to go,” she says. “I ended up in shelter after shelter.” Atkins ended up in a shelter called the Shalom House, where one woman told her about Peter & Paul Community Services and the Safe Haven program they were trying to start. When she applied, she was doubtful she’d get picked for the program, saying she had always been told she “wasn’t worth it.” “But they picked me,” she says. “I have the time and opportunity to live again without living in fear.”

It took Atkins months to call her Safe Haven apartment home, but now, a year later, she knows that it is. “I have my life back. That’s the best gift anybody could have given me,” she says. Atkins is looking for a job and looking into going back to school, has rekindled relationships, cooked her own Thanksgiving dinner and has a support dog. “I just want to really live,” she says. “I was simply existing for far too long.” Atkins is just one of many people Peter & Paul Community Services and the Safe Haven program has been able to help. Pearson and his staff have high hopes for the future of all of Peter & Paul’s programs. “We need to come up with a solution to homelessness,” he says. “As a city, we would be best served by adopting a trained, disciplinary approach to homelessness. It’s not just social workers who can solve this problem. We need buy-in from communities to work on these issues.”

UPCOMING FUNDRAISING EVENT Peter & Paul Community Services is an ecumenical agency that provides housing and supportive services to St. Louisans who are homeless, especially those who experience mental illness or live with HIV. An emergency shelter and on-site meals program meet immediate needs, transitional programs teach residents the skills they will need to live independently, and permanent supportive housing serves chronically homeless women and men who are most at risk. The agency specializes in offering professional care to the whole person. In addition, Peter & Paul sponsors the Community CollabARTive, in which artists help residents reflect and share their stories through media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, creative writing and dance. And the St. Louis Roadies, a street soccer team that competes each year in the USA National Cup, helps homeless clients by promoting health and teaching the value of working together to achieve a goal.

round 15 percent of the homeless population in the St. Louis metropolitan area is “chronically homeless,” which means they have been continuously homeless for a year or more or had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Many of the people encompassed in this percentage also struggle with physical or mental disabilities and have been homeless for years. Working to combat that statistic and bring those homelessness numbers closer to zero is Peter & Paul Community Services’ mission. The charity features an emergency shelter, meals program, transitional housing and its newest program: Safe Haven. Safe Haven is designed to reach those who are chronically homeless and provide them with supportive, permanent housing. The program is important because it not only supplies people with the housing they need, but it also gives them the support that is necessary to start anew, says Adam Cisroe Pearson, Safe Haven’s program director. “Evidence shows that if individuals are going to

Bring Your Summer Plants Inside By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess In the spring, we all get excited about getting our first plants “out,” out in the garden, patio or terrace, and watch with caution for the last spring freeze. In autumn, it is just the reverse. I’m ready to make my interior lush again. Growing season isn’t closing…just moving inside!

raise the bottom of the pot off of the saucer. ‌Cluster plants together in larger collections to maximize humidity. Use plastic trays, cake pans or even hot water heater drip pans for collections of smaller pots.

Tips on Winterizing Your Potted Plants

‌Add hanging basket drip bibs to keep water off

‌Move them now. Don’t wait for frost warnings. The colder the nights get, the more traumatized your tropicals will be. Visible damage may occur at 50 to 55 degrees. Palms, orchids, gesneriads, hibiscus and tomatoes will be killed by even a light frost.

‌Choose your supports to be moisture-resistant. Don’t make white rings on grandma’s coffee table. Wire bakers’ racks and dedicated plant stands withstand misting or drippage and allow good air circulation.

‌Choose the brightest windows for herbs and tropicals; shadier spots for orchids and African violets.

‌Keep plants out of drafty areas. This exacerbates winter dryness. Locate portable humidifiers near plant groupings. I keep one by a multi-tiered orchid rack.

‌Check carefully for insects. Mealy bug, scale and spider mite populations explode in the warmer indoor temperatures. If a plant is infested, be kind and destroy it now, before it infects others.

of your hardwood and carpeted floors.

Coleus works well as a cutting if the plant is too large to bring indoors.

‌Fertilize sparingly. Plants will not grow as quickly indoors and salts can accumulate without flushing. ‌Start now to dry out plants like tuberoses,

‌Water well and wash pot exteriors outside. It is never as easy to do these tasks indoors.

caladiums, Hymenocallis and tuberous begonias. They need a couple of weeks to go dormant and create a sturdy, dry exterior.

‌Match drain pans and pot sizes carefully. Saucers should be at least an inch or two larger to hold adequate runoff. Add ½-inch of fine gravel or aquarium stone to

‌Compost any plant past its prime. Annoying dropped leaves and increased susceptibility to disease make these great time wasters.

This lovely executive home has it all!

Bring Color In As Cuttings Many of our patio plants are too big to bring in. The coleus pots topped out above 4 feet this summer, and as much as I love them, they cannot have that much indoor space. Without the summer heat, they start dropping leaves and look generally tired. But rooted cuttings exhibit more vigor and last quite well as table centerpieces and color accents. For long-lasting arrangements, soak oasis blocks in water until saturated. Cut to fit decorative containers. Poke holes in the blocks with a pencil. Dip fresh-cut stems in rooting hormone and insert into the oasis holes and add liquid cut flower solution to fill the container. Many plants adapt well to this practice and may even survive the whole winter, living long enough to reforest your deck next year.

Frill Home co-owners Kristin Ebert and Marci Marsh

A Q & A with Kristin Ebert of Frill Home

E

By Denise Kruse

very well-appointed room needs that pièce de résistance that, as Frill Home co-owners and longtime friends Kristin Ebert and Marci Marsh put it, takes the space “from finished to fabulous.” Marsh is an artist with a background in interior design, and Ebert’s background is in marketing and product development. Frill Home offers a selection of beautiful and unique home furnishings and accessories showcasing international collections and local artists, as well as custom pieces with fabric handselected by the duo. The result is a carefully curated spread from more than 30 lines, with products you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in St. Louis. What inspired you to start Frill Home? We were both at transitional points in our lives, looking for a way to balance doing something we really

enjoyed and being there for our families. We often talked about the lack of options when it came to finding unique finishing touches. As a designer, you have access to a broader offering, but as a consumer, you are limited to the big box stores where everyone has the same options. What are your personal favorite design styles? There isn’t really one style, which is part of what Frill is all about. Frill is a reflection of our personal tastes: We integrate influences from fashion, art and history, and believe that style is predicated by your lifestyle. To narrow that down to one or two “styles” would be impossible. How do you curate the items in your store? We curate for our store to deliver on where we believe the next step of design is going. It is influenced by our travels, design magazines we read, art that intrigues us

and the trusted, quality partnerships we have built. We have very similar tastes when it comes to decorating and style, even though we come from very different backgrounds. We often laugh when we show up at the store wearing something, and the other one will have bought the exact same dress or blouse. That makes it easy when it comes to buying for the store and making decisions on what is the next big thing. Tell us about your custom pieces. We love textiles and fabrics; when we come across beautiful fabric or fabric remnants, we look for new ways to use them. We regularly offer custom pillows and upholstered pieces utilizing these finds. We also will order pieces in your standard muslin and reupholster them using fabrics that we feel make a statement or bring that finishing touch. We work with several local artists and have had numerous pieces commissioned to accommodate a client’s space or preference. 8837 Ladue Road, Ladue, 314-696-2222, frillhomestl.com

Parlor

Designer: David Deatherage of David Deatherage Design

Who would take a grand and traditional room boasting impressive Georgian-style architecture and fill it with mid-century, art deco and modern furnishings? David Deatherage, principal of David Deatherage Design, would. The well-traveled, self-taught designer who has a bachelor’s degree in engineering chose the home’s largest – and arguably most formal – room to display his trademark style, which blends new furnishings with an array of vintage pieces. The result is a distinct parlor that Deatherage describes as “formal and elegant, but thoroughly modern (and) equipped to entertain on a grand scale.”

Pillows covered in Kravet Couture’s cotton-velvet with an abstract pattern in shades of turmeric, black and gray provide a pop of color, as well as pillows covered in a silk Hermès fabric decorated with silver links on a gold background.

In the center of the room, Deatherage placed an auberginecolored velvet sofa and club chair with modern classic profiles from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

A pair of vintage architectural slipper chairs with classic brass frames and aubergine leather upholstery provide additional seating.

The black-lacquer sideboard with built-in bar was designed in the 1940s by noted New York designer James Mont, who created interiors for Lana Turner, Bob Hope and others stars of the day.

A 1939 art deco glass console can be used as a game table, intimate dining table, or as a surface for serving food and drink when entertaining.

Taking center stage is a blackand-white checkerboard table by mid-century modern master Milo Baughman, which Deatherage describes as “a work of art that’s both functional and playful – almost like a surreal, giant chessboard.”

Interior designers from across St. Louis have transformed 12 rooms at the 2015 Ladue News Show House, located at 1751 N. Woodlawn Ave. in Huntleigh, which opened to the public on Sat., Oct. 10. Last week, we shared the first set of four previews. The following previews share insight into the design process for four additional rooms: the parlor, loft and second and third bedrooms. Pick up the Oct. 23 issue of Ladue News for the remaining four room previews in advance of the Show House’s big reveal in the Oct. 30 issue. For more information about the Show House or to buy tickets to the Show House, visit laduenews.com.

Sheer drapery panels on either side of the French doors add both softness and glamour, and blend seamlessly with the adjacent hall, which was painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Analytical Gray.

A new crystal lighting fixture replaces the home’s original vintage multi-tier crystal chandelier, adding a touch of sparkling glamour overhead.

THE LOFT

Adding a note of Hollywoodstyle elegance to the alcove is a vintage console made of mirrored glass, painted wood and embellished with a neoclassical Greek pattern, all on a gracefully scrolled base.

The streamlined London Chaise from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams provides a place to lounge in high style. Unlike the deep burgundy pictured here, the final design features a chaise upholstered in Gavin Rain, a light aqua linen weave.

Designers: Patrice Munden of Patrice Munden Interior Design and Stephanie Blackshear of Designed, Interior Design Professionals

The Adam three-panel screen from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is upholstered in a heathery light blue and mint green woven fabric and detailed with a nickel nail-head border.

Patrice Munden, longtime St. Louis home décor professional and principal of Patrice Munden Interior Design, is a huge fan of 1940s films in which stars like Myrna Loy and William Powell are elegantly dressed for an evening spent lounging in an equally stunning penthouse. “We wanted to evoke that kind of feeling in the small alcove at the front of the second floor gallery – glamorous, but not over-the-top; elegant, but not stiff; comfortable, and showy at the same time,” explains Stephanie Blackshear, principal of Designed, Interior Design Professionals, who teamed with Munden to curate the small, but impressive space. “We both appreciate the intermingling of old and new – combining the soft clean lines of a contemporary aesthetic with classic styles and antique pieces to create timeless designs,” says Blackshear, who earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design from the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois-Carbondale. SHOW

Second Bedroom Designer: Amanda Rogers of Ethan Allen Retail Inc.

“At Ethan Allen, we like to think our style is ever-changing,” says Amanda Rogers, design center project manager at Ethan Allen Retail Inc. “We create a personal style for each of our clients, whether their tastes lean toward contemporary, traditional or classic looks.” Rogers designed a charming transitional-style space for the second bedroom, which serves as an ideal getaway for guests. The design takes its cue from simple, yet captivating creamy whites and a color Rogers calls Coral Essence. “It’s all about the use of fashion-forward colors and beautiful furniture to create calm surroundings,” she says. More than just a place to rest, the guest room is designed as a retreat for reading, working or simply relaxing.

Coral accents, including a table lamp, decorative boxes and photographs, carry the coral theme throughout the room.

SherwinWilliams’ White Dogwood paint color creates a neutral backdrop for showcasing vivid coralcolored fabrics, accessories and accents.

The guest room’s seating area features Ethan Allen’s Peyton sofa, a classic tufted scrollback sofa with curves that delight from every angle. Upholstered in a creamy textured linen fabric, it’s another important anchor piece in the large room.

Color is key to bringing Rogers’ design to life. She used a contemporary damask statement print fabric called Lexi in vivid coral and cream with touches of charcoal on the Wilder wing chair.

24

The room is anchored by Ethan Allen’s sleigh-style Haven bed, designed with dramatic curves and deep diamond tufts upholstered in a rich, creamy fabric.

LadueNews.com | october 16 2015

Ethan Allen’s Tracery accent table adds interesting and unexpected flair. It’s designed with a Moroccan-inspired open quatrefoil pattern framework with a silver-leaf finish and beveled glass top.

The room’s statement fabric is the velvet damask pattern on the bedcovering. It’s custom-made with Colefax & Fowler’s Brockham pattern in the Old Blue colorway.

The traditional sleigh-style upholstered bed from Century Furniture’s Coeur de France Collection sets the room’s tone.

One of the most striking pieces in the room is the Jacqueline chandelier from Visual Comfort. Part of the Aerin Lauder collection, the fixture is decorated with cascading glass jewels and an antique brass finish.

Accessories such as Chelsea House’s Bellezza bedside lamps help reinforce the color palette and carry it throughout the room. The lamps have urnshaped bases and are finished in soft blue, which echo the blues found in fabrics throughout the room.

The weathered patina on the Hickory White cream-colored dresser takes the formality of the bedroom down a notch. The 15-drawer dresser is one of the largest and most significant pieces in the room.

preview Third Bedroom

Designers: Gigi Lombrano of Gigi Lombrano Interiors and Laurie Hannigan of Laurie Hannigan Interiors “Our design philosophy is one of comfortable elegance with a blend of traditional and contemporary pieces to make a room relevant and interesting,” says Gigi Lombrano, ASID, who, along with interior designer Laurie Hannigan, took on the transformation of the third bedroom. Lombrano is principal of Gigi Lombrano Interiors and holds bachelor’s degrees in interior design and business. Hannigan also has a bachelor’s degree in interior design and more than 20 years of experience in the field. “The light in our room is wonderful and really spoke to us,” Lombrano says of the bedroom, which is in the northwest corner of the home. The natural light had a big impact on the duo’s selection of fabrics, finishes and their color palette of soft blues, grays and cream with accents of gold. “We wanted to create a serene and inviting space, nothing too precious or fancy,” Lombrano says. DESIGN SOURCEBOOK: Feature Story Mosby building Arts

ENVISIONING ith the help of realistic 3-D renderings, Mosby Building Arts can bring clients’ dream spaces to life. The home remodeling and repair company utilizes Chief Architect – professional 3-D architectural home design software – to create a number of detailed design plan options that allow clients to choose their ultimate makeover. Designer Jillian Brinkman recently used the technology to show a St. Peters resident how Mosby could transform her dim, dated kitchen into an open, maintenance-free space. The homeowner desired a high-end kitchen makeover that would be low-maintenance for her and safe for her grandkids. With the client’s wish list in mind – from an open floor plan to the desired colors and textures of the cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, fixtures and flooring, Brinkman produced three plans in Chief Architect, allowing the homeowner to imagine what her kitchen could become. “This helps visualize

By Brittany Nay

what’s possible and helps our clients feel confident in the design direction,” Brinkman says. Within the three plans, Mosby explores a conservative approach in Design A, adds more dream upgrades in Design B and includes everything clients imagine for their space in Design C, Brinkman explains. “Then, we present the designs, look at samples and deliver budget ranges. If the client loves what they’ve seen so far, we can start shopping for their fixtures and finishes.” Mosby’s kitchen redesign fit the St. Peters homeowner’s vision, style and budget, and the monthlong construction process commenced. To achieve the open-concept design, the team removed a wall between the living room and kitchen. Maple wood cabinetry in a sable-colored stain and an accent of island cabinetry in a midnight blue hue were installed. “Our client wanted maintenance-free countertops, so we selected Caesarstone quartz in the color London Grey with an ogee edge,” Brinkman says. “And the backsplash tile is a smooth, split-faced, interlocking

ledgestone with a honed finish by PetraSlate.” Fixtures included Brantford Collection faucets by Moen. “An induction cooktop with downdraft (ventilation) was installed in the kitchen island – a great choice because it’s efficient and keeps her grandchildren’s reaching hands safe,” Brinkman notes. New hardwood flooring, stained to match the home’s existing wood flooring, completed the space. For homeowners looking to revamp their kitchen this fall, Brinkman says a black-and-white color scheme, with touches of natural wood texture, is on trend. “Monochromatic color schemes also are trending right now,” she adds. “The idea is to keep the space feeling clean and simple, without being boring, by incorporating things like artwork, green plants and a colorful Le Creuset (cookware) collection.” And for a one-of-a-kind finishing touch, Brinkman says a handcrafted backsplash and vintage light fixtures can add an unexpected flair to your space this season.

taging can make a sincere difference in real estate, as a great first impression can be the difference between a sale and a stagnant property. With so much of the field being aesthetic, it only makes sense that a real estate expert would have a keen eye for style. Julie Church, commercial agent at McKelvey Properties, has been in St. Louis two and a half years. Outside of her real estate day job, this fashion lover serves on Gateway to Hope’s KaleidoHope committee and with St. Louis Crisis Nursery’s charity events. Church’s reach doesn’t end there; she takes her style sense to BCBGMAXAZRIA at Plaza Frontenac where she works “very part-time” as a stylist, sharing her

expertise with clients and friends. “I find that BCBG and Max Azria are never ‘trendy,’ but rather, they take bits and pieces of trends and translate them into classic, wearable pieces.” She adores shopping, and outside of BCBG notes local boutiques and department stores as favorites. “For workout wear, I love Dimvaloo; for unique pieces, 10denza always has cool things and Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus always have me covered for shoes!” Church says she considers her personal look polished bohemian. “Over the years, I have learned what looks good on me and what I feel comfortable in,” she says. “I love to dress up, but for everyday, I like a tailored dress or a great pair of pants and then lots of

layers, especially cool jackets – you could say I have a jacket addiction.” Her jacket fashion weakness seems to pop up in all types of outfits. For daily workwear, she describes her self-proclaimed uniform as comfortable heels, pants and a draped blouse, with – of course – a jacket. “I love my jackets,” Church says. “They complete any outfit.” The start of autumn always excites fashionistas, and Church is no different. “I have been waiting and waiting, and I finally pulled the trigger on a beautiful pair of over-the-knee boots that I plan on wearing with pretty much everything in my closet!” One can assume the jackets will also make an appearance.

Matches Made in Beauty Heaven

By Amy Koehler

‌JUST AS FASHION HAS ITS TRENDS, EVERY LOOK HAS ITS MOMENT IN THE WORLD OF BEAUTY. HERE’S A RUNDOWN OF FALL’S HOTTEST MAKEUP TRENDS, AND HOW TO WEAR THEM. Bold Eye

Red Lips

We have been seeing this trend on the runway with unexpected colors like navy and emerald. Pair this look with a neutral lip, and dress it up with cloaked fur or an embroidered evening gown.

Graphic Eye Liner

A red lip is always iconic, but to keep it on-trend this season, it’s all about a youthful complexion. You can get a fresh glow by using the strobing technique: Use a soft color on the lid to create bright eyes. A white eyeliner on the inner rim will enhance brightness. Try this with a monochromatic outfit.

Wash of Color

Skin

To wear this well, you have to choose a shade that is not too bold. Try using a bronze color slightly darker than your current skin tone. For day, keep the lips soft in a tone similar to the shadow. This look wears best with a bold print or fringe.

Let’s be honest, a flawless face looks great with anything. How do you achieve it? A lifetime of care. But if you need great skin right now, then you need an amazing foundation, such as Dior Airflash ($62, fine department stores).

Day DeaD Skull

For this look, you want to use a good liquid eyeliner with a steady hand. I always suggest clients anchor the elbow by leaning it on a table, then anchor the wrist on the chin and apply the liner starting at the corner of the eye. The part that flicks out should point to where the eyebrow ends. Then, carefully drag the liner toward the center of the lid. Next, point the tip toward the inner corner and carefully drag the liner the opposite direction towards the center of the eyelid. The lines should meet at the center. Then, trace over the initial line created to a desired thickness. For a current look, try wearing a stained berry color on the lip, or just tinted lip balm, like Dior Lip Glow ($33, fine department stores). Graphic liner works well with almost any fall fashion trend.

Maid By Amanda Dahl | Photos by Sarah Conard Modeled by Katie Christopher and Melissa Bean of West Model Management

St. Louis bridal experts share what colors, cuts and styles are trending for bridesmaids’ dresses this fall and winter.

A

On Melissa Bean: Adrianna Papell, mesh/beaded gown in taupe/ pink, $260, Bella Bridesmaids

bride depends on her maid of honor and bridesmaids to assist with wedding planning so she can focus on the most important thing: getting married to the one she loves. While bridesmaids and wedding parties are a time-honored tradition, clichéd bridesmaids’ dresses are a thing of the past. From shimmering gowns with extravagant detail to a broader range of cuts, colors and styles, brides have many options for outfitting their closest group of friends and family. The past few years have seen a shift from uniform cuts and colors to more broad guidelines that encourage individual style. Examples include allowing bridesmaids to choose cuts that flatter their own figure, as well as to brides who choose one color but then suggest different shades for each bridesmaid dress. “Brides want their bridesmaids to look and feel their best, and in order to achieve that, you have to let them show some individuality,” says Carrie Lowery, owner of Bella Bridesmaids in Town and Country. “They all have different shapes and sizes. Letting the girls pick from a variety of styles and colors ensures bridesmaids will wear a dress that flatters their bodies.” Vicky Smith, who co-owns Mia Grace Bridal in Chesterfield with her sister, Laurie Rao, has noticed a similar sentiment from brides. “They want something different than the typical bridesmaid dress – something more unique.” In fall and winter, style no longer necessitates muted colors or heavy fabrics to match the weather. Instead, celebratory metallic, satin, tulle, lace, chiffon and sparkle are in season. “Sometimes, brides will alternate metallic and shinier fabrics,” Smith says. “The maid-ofhonor might wear metallic, while the rest are dressed in matching satin.” Smith recommends addressing color first and then choosing a style from the same designer. “We have a new line of metallic dresses arriving, with lots of lace, tulle and satin,” she says. Brides also opt for a touch of vintage glam this time of year, with lustrous accents to make their bridesmaids stand out, such as jeweled belts or elaborate hair pins or accessories. Natural and understated colors are still in style, but Smith says they’ve evolved. “The greys – silver, navy, champagne – are still there, but now, we’re seeing more from the green family, such as peacock or hunter green, and even bright reds, like candy-apple red,” she says. “Brides want to make a statement, so they’re choosing something bold and different.” The ombré look, a gradual blending of one color shade to another, such as azure to sapphire, has been trending for the past few years and continues to be popular for bridesmaid dresses.

Brides opt for a touch of vintage glam this time of year, with lustrous accents to make their bridesmaids stand out, such as jeweled belts or elaborate hair pins or accessories.

At Bella Bridesmaids, Lowery says metallics are especially on-trend in December and January. “For holiday weddings, like New Year’s Eve, brides have chosen neutral-toned dresses, with exquisite beading and sparkle for that extra touch of glam,” Lowery says. “Deeper colors also are definitely more of a winter trend. The rich hunter green and burgundy tones give off a lovely winter vibe without being too much like the typical bright red-andgreen combination that reminds us of Christmas.” Traditional floor-length cuts reign supreme for fall and winter, but Lowery says more of these flowing frocks are now made with different materials, such as a metallic or lace bodice with a chiffon skirt. “We also are seeing a rise in the popularity of tulle,” Lowery says. “This fabric is super soft and romantic – a vibe that a lot of brides look for today.” Whether you opt for vintage glam, sparkly and metallic, bold and striking or something that mixes and matches each trend, Smith says Mia Grace Bridal stocks a wide range of styles and sizes to meet the needs of all brides and bridesmaids. “Our broad selection and large range of sizes make it easy for women of all sizes to try on dresses and determine how they’ll look.” Lowery echoes Smith’s sentiment: “Whether a bride wants her maids in the same dress or in a different color and fabric, we have a vast selection of dresses and top-notch stylists who make each bride’s vision a reality.” Bella Bridesmaids, 13428 Clayton Road, Town and Country, 314-205-1191, bellabridesmaids.com Mia Grace Bridal, 108 Chesterfield Towne Center, Chesterfield, 636-778-3433, miagracebridal.com On Melissa: Jenny Yoo Collection, Mischka Belt (converted into a headband), $60, Bella Bridesmaids

new storefront is catching the eye of shoppers strolling down Maryland Avenue in downtown Clayton. Garden Party and David launched in June, and the cozy and creative shop is welcoming a slew of loyal clients and new customers alike. The newly branded company’s first brick-and-mortar location, at 8103 Maryland Ave., offers fresh florals and home furnishings, as well as wedding flowers. The faces behind the unique shop are Meg Huber, who ran Garden Party out of her home since 1992, and David Zettler, a longtime floral designer. When Huber decided last year to open a shop, she knew Zettler’s wonderful aesthetic with flowers, creative talent and excellent attitude would make him the perfect partner. Since the shop’s debut, business has been brisk, Huber says. “Our goal is to have a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. People can stay as long as they like, browse and visit, and feel comfortable in here.” The space was formerly occupied by Margaret’s, a lingerie

and swimwear boutique, so the dressing rooms have been converted to a variety of vignettes including home decor, baby items, florals and Meg Huber and David Zettler personal care products. ome romantic stories begin long before a couple can remember, in the small moments that take one from first meeting to an unforgettable connection. That’s how it was for Pascale Marie Thomas and Tayo Eniola Famakinwa, who met at Duke University. A friendship began over their shared commitment to the community, which resulted in the two often working together on university councils, committees and panels – and even sharing the title of Most Involved upon graduation. Today, Tayo and Pascale tease each other about an early attraction, but the real romance began after the unstoppable pair moved apart. Career opportunities separated the two, but they got a second chance while residing in Chicago. After Pascale had her wisdom teeth removed, Tayo spent a week nursing her back to health during his free time. “I make a terrible patient,” Pascale says. “He was so sweet and thoughtful. For some time, it had been a question as to whether we were becoming something more than friends. After that week, I was certain.” The right time for a proposal seemed to elude the couple as Tayo spent a majority of his time away on business trips. “I felt a lot of pressure to make it a special day, but by that point, even a normal weekend seemed pretty special,” Tayo recalls. So, he tricked Pascale into thinking he missed his flight home, while Tayo really flew to St. Louis to ask for her parents’ blessing. Arriving at his final destination, he took Pascale for a day of enjoyment, from brunch to shopping to a movie at their favorite theater; and as the evening concluded, Tayo utilized a quiet moment to ask Pascale if she’d move to New York with him – as his fiancée. Celebrating in their usual style, and with friends alongside, the couple cheered their beloved Duke Blue Devils to victory in a March Madness game, culminating in the perfect day. The final chapter of Tayo and Pascale’s story ends dripping in romance and elegance, with a fête not soon to be forgotten. The day began with a wave of gifts from Tayo to the bridal suite, including favorite candies and a custom-made necklace and bracelet set from a private Manhattan jeweler. After exchanging vows at the bride’s childhood parish, Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, the celebrations were held in swinging style at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. An art deco scene was set, bringing to life the glitz and glamour of the couple’s favorite era, the Jazz Age. An 18-piece jazz orchestra regaled the revelers as they enjoyed a fivetiered Champagne tower and antique-mirror dance floor. Some 300 guests welcomed the bride and groom with the pop of Champagne bottles, as they entered to the crescendo of Duke Ellington’s “Jeep’s Blues.” But of course, the couple selected the perfect serenade for their first dance, Etta James’ “At Last.” Tayo and Pascale jetted off to Italy for their honeymoon, traversing across the country to explore Venice, Florence, Milan and the Amalfi Coast. The couple currently resides in New York.

he last time Dan Buck and I were on the radio together, I said something to him that I later regretted. I told him that he never looked at issues from “the other guy’s side.” I said it to show the difference between our talk show styles, but I had the feeling he kind of took it as a slight. I’m not sure if I meant it that way or not, but it always bothered me, because I think Buck is a great guy and a man of real conviction. He always puts his convictions front and center. “I had someone tell me my greatest asset is my conviction, and my greatest fault is my conviction,” Buck says with a laugh. That last show was a couple of days before U.S. troops invaded Iraq in March 2003, and it was our last shift together on the morning drive at KTRS. It was also Dan’s last day as a broadcaster in St. Louis. He’d spent years working long hours on radio and TV while also running a video production business on the side. He admits he was running himself ragged, chasing more pay, nicer cars and bigger houses, but he realized it wasn’t very gratifying. It all changed for him one morning, after he went on a rant that clearly showed his one-sided conviction. The head of the board of one of the region’s most important social services agencies just happened to be tuned into our show. “It was about housing and urban development, and this multibillion dollar program called Section 8 that just holds people down and disincentivizes work,” Buck remembers. “And when I got off the air, the president of the board of the St. Patrick Center called me and asked, ‘Are you one of those people who just wants to talk the talk the rest of your life, or do you want to walk the walk?’” Buck was eventually hired as chief executive officer of St. Patrick Center. Buck says even though he didn’t know the first thing about running a social service agency, he had a feeling it was what he was meant to do, especially after the life check we all got on 9/11. “More than 3,000 people lost their lives that day and never saw it coming,” he says. “What if it happened to me? What would my legacy be; that I was a creative guy who won some Emmys but had no real impact on people’s lives?” So for the next eight years, Buck worked to get homeless people off the streets permanently and back into stable homes and careers. He had big ideas and helped change many lives. Buck moved on to become the executive director of the Cardinal Glennon Foundation, where he says the coffers grew from $7.9 million to $15.8 million during his three-year tenure. Then, just a few months ago, he got another big idea: the Buck Innovation Group, or B.I.G., for short. Buck describes it as a business development firm that helps companies create media and marketing platforms, develop business strategies and provide fresh ideas. “Every great entrepreneur needs thought partners; they need people to help them see how to do things in a different way,” Buck says. “I decided I wanted to create a company that could work with live minds and live hearts and creative business plans that maybe just need that one nudge.” Sitting in the beer cellar at Schneithorst’s, he told me about a show he’s producing on Fox Sports that he’ll use as a marketing tool and will also get him back into the TV biz. It’s going to be called “The Manly Man Show” and is set to debut next spring. The other big project he’s working on deals with a new model for health care that puts a high value on disease prevention through wellness and fitness programs. “This new venture allows me to take all of my passion and conviction and put it toward things that matter, and help launch great new concepts and ideas and be on

And as it turns out, I remembered a whole lot more about our last radio show together than he did; he was no doubt already too busy thinking big.

hen our children were little, my wife and I chose their Halloween costumes. We have funny family photos of our boys dressed as dogs, super heroes and cartoon characters. Now, they are opinionated teens who decide themselves what they want to wear. Halloween is all about pushing the envelope of imagination. Boys often enjoy wearing scary, gory costumes, and girls sometimes lean toward age-inappropriate attire. We all want our kids to have fun, but Halloween doesn’t mean that children should wear outfits parents might normally deem inappropriate. Most kids don’t dress to shock others or attract the attention of the opposite sex; rather, costumed attire is often the way children identify with their peers. Many, however, do judge a book by its cover. It is important for children to understand that what they wear sends a message about who they are. Have a family discussion and set clear boundaries about acceptable holiday attire. Letting children, even older teens, wear provocative costumes could send the message it is normal for kids to exhibit adult sexuality. Overly violent and gory costumes may give the impression that aggressive acts are acceptable.

“It is important for

children to understand that what they wear sends a message about who they are.”

And costumes that make jokes at the expense of others can be hurtful. When it comes to picking a costume, remember that you are the parent. Even though Halloween is just one day, you are setting the stage for not only future costumes but also future clothing choices. If you child gets upset, remember that Halloween hassles will be quickly forgotten once the sugar buzz kicks in. Are character witnesses important in family law cases? St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Expert witnesses play an important role in family law and divorce cases. This naturally leads to a discussion about character witnesses. Do character witnesses help in a divorce, child custody or family law matter? Do they make a difference? This is an important question worthy of a discussion. Often, parties come to their divorce or family law attorney with the proposal that they call character witnesses. The most common character witnesses commonly proposed by parties are friends and family members. Parties often think it might be helpful to have their mother, father, sibling, other relative or friend come into court to testify that they are a great person, that they have great character, etc. The reality is that bringing somebody in to simply testify to matters of character, on a surface level, is rarely persuasive. Obviously, a friend or family member is going to say great things about you. Any skilled attorney on the other side will likely try to attack these witnesses as being biased (blood is thicker than water attack) or having their own personal motive. Versus character witnesses, it is often wise to think about fact witnesses that might have something important to say. Instead of having a friend or family mem-

ber testify about your character in a divorce or family law matter, having them tell a story as a fact witness about a pertinent fact often might be of use. Often, friends and family members can testify as to what they’ve seen somebody do as a parent in a custody case for example. Even when this takes place, these witnesses can still be attacked as being biased. Thus, think about some more persuasive witnesses that can help like school teachers, the kids’ doctors, coaches of sporting teams, members of the same club or church, and other unbiased witnesses, etc., who have seen a party in action as a parent or spouse. These witnesses, when used correctly, aren’t testifying outright as to the character of a party. Instead, they are telling stories based on what they’ve seen with their own eyes or heard with their own ears. A judge often listens to these stories and does come to a positive conclusion about the character of a party without the ultimate question even being asked: “Do you think Mom/Dad is a parent of good character?” For example, take a moment where a coach of a team tells a story about a specific instance that comes to mind where one parent illustrates good parenting skills. Or, take a moment where a doctor or school teacher testifies about another

story where good parenting is illustrated. Stories like these can paint a positive picture as to the character of somebody that is often persuasive in trial without the summary question ever being asked. That’s best saved for the closing argument when the attorney summarizes all the facts testified to in court. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. The C Suite BUSINESS NOTES When is enough enough?

By Charlotte VM Ottley

‌“Nothing comes without a price, and success is no different. There is no one-size-fits-all formula.” – An Ottley-ism Success, whether personal or professional, is often measured and influenced by society’s perception. Each human being has a distinctive strategy of attaining the highest opportunity; however, many are heavily influenced by how others perceive them, based too often on material gains. Surely it cannot be money alone. There are too many “successful” people who have fallen into legal traps and while seeking the promises of wealth. Certainly it cannot be popularity alone, which is duplicitous. As soon as people like you, they can turn on you with one random, ill-judged act. True success is a balancing act in knowing when enough is enough.

I propose we all need the “right” formula: being right-headed enough to be skilled and competitive enough to climb with integrity; being right-hearted enough to value others and bring them along as we advance; and being right-spirited enough to know that there is something bigger than you. Your fortune can change at a blink of an eye. This “right” balance stabilizes your success and allows you the ability to get to it and through it feeling complete. The question arises “When is enough, really enough to be successful?” Consider these cues: ‌Ask yourself: Is the price you are paying for professional success worth

I wish he could have experienced The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, a Halloween extravaganza drawing more than 100,000 visitors each year at Hudson Valley’s historic Van Cortland Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. The annual fall spectacle features more than 7,000 individually hand-carved, illuminated jack-o’-lanterns displayed as circus characters, dragons, spider webs and pumpkin acrobats that actually tumble. All are set to synchronized lighting, animation and incredible sound effects. Staff, volunteers and local artists, under the

supervision of creative director Michael Natiello, begin carving in June. Real pumpkins are carved throughout the show and immediately prior to the event, which lasts for 30 days in October into early November. More than 10,000 real pumpkins weighing between 5 and 50 pounds are ordered to replace withering pumpkins throughout the show. Unseasonably hot days are the biggest problem. Marvel at the collection of shrunken Little Monsters and working doomsday grandfather clock and shiver as the slithering ground snakes creep your way. Only a certain number of visitors are allowed to enjoy the approximately 45-minute walk through Halloween wonderland at a given time, and the time slots sell out months in advance. This is a classic fall festival in the breathtakingly beautiful Hudson Valley, with leaves turning golden yellow, deep red and purple. Within a 20-minute drive of the Van Cortland Manor and the blazing pumpkins are three lovely places to stay: If you’re in the mood for castle living, you can’t beat Castle Hotel & Spa in Tarrytown for ambiance and delicious dining at Equus Restaurant; The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester in White Plains for contemporary chic; and the charming Kittle House Inn in Chappaqua, right down the street from Hillary and Bill, for farm-to-table dining and 12 comfortable suites in the lovely neighborhood of Lawrence Farms. While you’re there, partake in some great local fare: in Tarrytown, Mint Premium Foods and Restaurant and Sweet Grass Grill; and in Croton-on-Hudson, Anton Restaurant, Giovanni’s Italian American Deli and Ocean House. For those who simply have to be scared out of their pants to enjoy Halloween, try the haunted attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, at Philipsburg Manor in the heart of the real Sleepy Hollow. It’s definitely not

for children. Tour Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Listen to the retelling of the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in the candlelit setting of the Old Dutch Church across from Phillipsburg Manor. For the kiddies, there’s a daytime shadow-puppet performance at Washington Irving’s charming home, Sunnyside, recounting the tale of

the Headless Horseman. Don’t miss this fall spectacle. It’s the perfect family adventure…or to paraphrase Linus, “It’s The Greatest Pumpkins, Charlie Brown!” For tickets, to the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, visit stubhub.com/the-great-jack-olantern-blaze-tickets/.

here is an increasing sing n number of girls on the run in St.. L Louis. But they’re not running from anything m thing – much the opposite. Through th local chapter of h the national nonprofit Girls on the Run, th un, they’re running toward their futures with more confi nfidence, peer connections and strength of charactter. These are just a few of the traitss developed d by Girls on the Run, which works with girls thir through irls in third eighth grades, says Courtney Berg, exeecutive director of the Girls on the Run St. Louis council an a licensed il and clinical social worker. “Our program began in 2002 with g th 20 girls meeting on a park bench in Clayton’s Shaw Park,”” Berg B says. “Our founding council director, Jill Indovino, reead a story about the founder of Girls on the Run, Moll lly Barker, in Runner’s World magazine. She loved the desi esign of the program and that it gave girls an opportunitty to live “outside of the girl box.” With great couragee and an vision, she started our council.” Berg says the St. Louis program has impaccted more than 35,000 girls since its inception. This seasoon in St. Louis alone, 900 volunteer Girls on the Run c un coaches are working with almost 2,500 girls at 118 progrram sites, making it the second-largest of the nation’ss 225 councils. The program is offered at more than 300 schools and community-based sites in 23 counties across eastern Missouri and western Illinois, including ding locations in urban, suburban and rural communities. “We’ve experienced completely organic growth,” Berg says. “Our program has grown through word of mouth and by caring parents, teachers and communityy members who want to bring this life-changing program am to their school and community.” Girls on the Run St. Louis’ mission is “to empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living.” Volunteer coaches do that through a 20-lesson curriculum, meeting with participants twice a week, that combines physical training for a 5K race with lessons that help girls develop self-esteem and life skills. “The evidence-based curriculum is designed to equip girls with the critical skills needed at this stage off

development so that they may grow in their physical, mental, social and spiritual health as well as minimize those unhealthy or risky behaviors,” Berg explains. “Girls are empowered with positive self-awareness and increased confidence, a sense of achievement by training for and completing a 5K and giving back to their community through a service project each season. They experience confidence through accomplishment.” But Berg doesn’t want us to just take her word for it. She notes that program impact research has been completed through The Prevention Research Center at The Brown School at Washington university, showing significant increases in participants’ self-confidence, positive attitude and physical activity levels. “And Girls on the Run has a ripple effect on parents and families by increasing physical activity and serving as a tool to develop family relationships,” she adds. A recent lesson covered the power of positive self-talk and the dangers of negative self-talk. “They have incredible, real and honest conversations about some of the negative things others have said to them or they have said about themselves, how that felt and what they perhaps started to believe,” Berg says. “However, the coaches guide the girls through a process where they affirm one another and themselves and literally destroy those negative thoughts. Some of our teams have even decorated a shredder to eat up those negative thoughts.” each lesson contains a warm-up activity to introduce the topic while prepping for the physical workout, pre-workout stretching and processing of the topic through questions and answers, physical activity that involves personal or team goals, additional discussion during a physical cool-down and a final wrap-up that reiterates the positive points made during that day’s session. “That our girls are setting a big goal, completing a 5K and having the opportunity to learn how to make a plan, surround yourself with positive, encouraging people, both adults and peers, handle any obstacles or set-backs and achieve that goal – it’s tremendous,” Berg says. “This,

coupled with the opportunity to cultivate a safe space to learn about and discuss making positive choices, handling challenging situations – we are truly equipping girls to be confident, courageous and empowered.” Participants and families often express their gratitude through blog posts on the council’s website or simply through personal emails or notes. One parent recently wrote: “On behalf of my daughter and myself, thank you for your generosity. You have made it possible for my little girl to participate once again. Girls on the Run inspires her and gives her a sense of belonging to something extraordinary.”

Mother and daughter embrace after completing a race. Photo by Charles Berg, courtesy of Girls on the Run

This year’s culminating 5K run will occur at 8:30 a.m., Sat., Nov. 14, at Soldiers’ Memorial in downtown St. Louis. Anyone can join participants in the run by registering at girlsontherunstlouis.org.

PRIVATE SCHOOL PROFILES: Feature Story

Visitation academy

Fostering a Culture of

I

n keeping up with the rapid growth in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career field, Visitation Academy has jumped on board to get its young ladies enthused about a possible future career in the sciences. At the start of this school year, the Catholic school opened a Makerspace for its middle schoolers. Middle school principal Jane Eschmann says they were looking for a way to get their girls involved in engineering and design-like projects where they would create solutions for problems. “Middle school is a great age for getting that growth through hands-on projects,” Eschmann says. She worked with technology coordinator Sue Andrews and came up with a proposal for a space where their students could create, invent and learn. They visited Makerspaces in other schools and attended conferences and sessions about developing a space. They learned that every school that has a Makerspace does it differently, so they had to decide what angle they wanted Visitation’s to take.

“We knew we wanted to bring the girls into the space as a part of their classes,” Andrews says. “This isn’t just going to be for science and math. We’re incorporating it into art, language arts and foreign language.” Andrews notes that engineers, for example, don’t just think like engineers when they’re using their science skills. “It’s a part of everything you do,” she says. “We’re very excited about that aspect. We’re so excited to get the girls in there to design, tinker and play.” From there, the Visitation faculty and staff will continue to develop the design process for the students. Andrews, Eschmann and the Visitation staff are committed to opening young minds to the STEM field, since women are underrepresented in many aspects. “If we had this space as just a before- or after-school program, not all of our girls would be able to take advantage of it,” Eschmann says. “It was extremely important for us to integrate this space into the school day.” She says that while students might not initially think in a STEM-minded way, with the right exposure,

Creativity By Robyn Dexter

they could. The Makerspace currently features PVC pipe, soldering guns, tool sets, sewing machines, electric circuit boards, 3-D printing and much more. Beginning this school year, sixth graders will begin using the space and have it engrained into their time at Visitation. “From the current sixth graders, I think we’ll see quite an evolution,” Andrews says. “We’re just beginning the implementation with 3-D printing and CAD drawing to lay that foundation for the engineering concept. They need to understand that their inventions need to be prototypes.” Feedback from teachers and students so far has been positive, Andrews and Eschmann say. “Both the students and teachers can’t wait to get in there regularly,” Andrews says. “We’re providing these middle schoolers with the opportunity to gain selfconfidence that could help them go into STEM careers. It’s an excellent hook for future academic choices.”

Tucked within a humble strip mall, Paul Manno’s is a hidden gem in the St. Louis dining scene. Inside, the atmosphere is classy and elegant, with low lights and plenty of Sinatra on the walls and over the speakers. Service is efficient and understated. As it states right up front in the menu, don’t expect any “nouveau” cuisine here. It features a selection of prosciutto and salami from Volpi, a local family-owned Italian cured meat company, along with some Sicilian olive salad, slices of Parmigiano-Reggiano and mozzarella with some peppers for contrast. To augment this spread, try a glass of Barbera d’Alba ($9.50), full of rich, ripe fruit notes. For a non-meat starter, the insalata casa ($8.50), is a good choice. It’s a hearty helping of mixed greens topped with red wine vinegar for a little bit of bite, along with some extra virgin olive oil, topped with plenty of cheese. The menu at Paul Manno’s ranges far and wide, encompassing Italian delicacies from rack of lamb (a house specialty) to veal piccata to all manner of pasta. One classic that I found particularly satisfying

By Matt Sorrell is the canneloni ($16 for two pieces, three pieces for $22). This classic consists of large hollow pieces of pasta filled with a savory Bolognese meat sauce that’s superbly contrasted with a sweet cream sauce. It’s also available as a single piece on the first course (primi piatti) list. It would have been easy to just stick with pasta, but there’s so much to choose from we decided to delve into the pollo (chicken) selections, an area I oftentimes overlook at Italian eateries, being such a noodle fan. The pollo scarpariello ($23), made me glad we did. It’s a massive chicken breast topped with spicy salsiccia and plenty of peppers, garlic and a bit of tomato sauce. It also comes with a choice of several pastas. A simple bowl of spaghetti with basil and

garlic fit the bill quite nicely. Normally after such a feast there’s not much room for anything else, but the dessert list has one of our all-time Italian favorites, the cannoli. In deference to the meal we’d just put away, we opted to split one ($8). Like so many good things, it’s simple and tasty, just a crispy shell filled with sweet ricotta and topped with a cherry. Culinary trends come and go, but thankfully there are places like Paul Manno’s, where they’re interested, not in the latest things, but only in making the best things skillfully. This is the restaurant’s 20th year of serving up fine food – here’s to many more. 75 Forum Center, Chesterfield, 314-878-1274

Story: Al Lewis and Willie Clark had everyone laughing during their 43 years together in vaudeville, until Al said “enough” after a performance one night, informing Willie that he was retiring from show business and becoming a stockbroker. Now, it’s 1972 and Clark hasn’t spoken to Lewis for 11 years, harboring a grudge that has grown to unhealthy proportions. The embittered Willie lives alone in a rundown hotel, where he greets his weekly visitor and nephew, Ben, with sarcasm and insults while he pores over the Variety show biz newspaper that Ben faithfully provides. This week, though, Ben brings something more: News that CBS wants to re-unite Lewis and Clark for a retrospective on the great names of comedy. Naturally, Willie is against it, although he won’t mind seeing Al grovel with apologies and beg his former partner to do the $10,000 job. Ben arranges for the retired Al to visit, and the old fireworks promptly reignite, sparked mostly by Willie. Can these two relics of a bygone entertainment era capture that comic magic again? Highlights: Prolific playwright Neil Simon based his 1972 comedy on a pair of real-life vaudeville teams, primarily “Smith and Dale” (Joe Sultzer and Charlie Marks). New Jewish Theatre’s 19th season opener features the primary roles filled by local actors John Contini and Peter Mayer. They replaced two previously announced actors, including NJT artistic associate Bobby Miller, who is recovering from a recent illness. With minimal rehearsal time, Contini and Mayer have managed to mine the rich Simon motherlode of comedy to great effect, showing why they’ve been involved in show business more than 43 years combined themselves. Other Info: Contini and Mayer have long delighted audiences at area theaters and beyond with their considerable skills, excelling in dramatic roles. Seeing the two versatile veterans display their comic talents is a particular treat, especially considering their limited rehearsal time. Mayer in particular showcases an aspect of his abilities seldom viewed as the more amenable Al. His comic timing is splendid, as he dryly rolls words like “Enterrr?” slowly off his tongue to amusing effect. As the cantankerous Willie, Contini takes a more caustic approach, carefully conveying Willie’s sarcasm and crotchety attitude while also revealing the years of pent-up frustration and stress that Willie has allowed to fester. He’s also adept at the gentle comedy required as he tries to unlatch a balky lock. Jared Sanz-Agero nicely fills the other notable role of Willie’s nephew, Ben, an agent who looks out for his lonely uncle’s needs despite the fact that Willie can never remember the names of Ben’s two kids. It’s a part limited by Simon’s narrow and somewhat clichéd

restrictions, but Sanz-Agero succeeds in showing Ben’s sympathetic nature. Julia Crump, Bob Harvey and Leo B. Ramsey are fine in smaller roles, respectively, of the voluptuous nurse in Lewis and Clark’s famous “doctor sketch,” an unsuspecting patient of the doctor (based on Smith and Dale’s “Dr. Kronkhite”) and a stage hand at a CBS rehearsal studio. Some of Willie’s leering at the leggy nurse can be wince-inducing, but it’s also integral to the often lecherous humor of the vaudeville entertainment era. Simon saves many of his best lines for the give-andtake between Willie and a registered nurse (Fannie Belle-Lebby), whose thick skin and quick tongue prove worthy equals to Willie’s crude and cutting remarks. Belle-Lebby’s droll approach is a welcome tonic to Willie’s persistent verbal onslaughts. Timing is crucial for performers in any Simon play, and director Doug Finlayson does a good job ensuring that pace is lively and lines delivered smoothly. His touch also is evident in a wordless, but highly humorous, scene as the two aged vaudevillians laboriously move furniture about in Willie’s apartment to rehearse their doctor sketch, comically oblivious to each other. There were some moments of hesitation in Sunday evening’s performance, and Simon’s schtick can sometimes wear one down despite his unrivaled excellence with witty one-liners. For the most part, though, this rendition of “The Sunshine Boys” is a tribute not only to performers of a bygone era but also to the resilience of the estimable Contini and Mayer. ‌Company: New Jewish Theatre Venue: Wool Theatre, Jewish Community Center, 2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur Dates: Oct. 17 & 18, 21 & 22, 24 & 25, 28 & 29, 31, Nov. 1 Tickets: $39.50 to $43.50; contact 314-442-3283 or newjewishtheatre.org Rating: A 4 on a scale of 1-to-5

‌ rt Saint Louis soon will unveil its highly creative A and competitive juried installation, “Art St. Louis XXXI, The Exhibition.” Artistic director Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff recently gave LN a glimpse into the annual show – running Nov. 7 to Dec. 23, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 14 – as well as shared what’s in store for the future of the 31-year-old contemporary visual arts organization. Tell us about Art St. Louis XXXI, The Exhibition. Artists submitted artworks in all themes, styles, techniques and media to be selected by this year’s juror, Porter Arneill, who is the director of arts and culture for the city of Lawrence, Kansas, and previously worked for Regional Arts Commission St. Louis and Laumeier Sculpture Park. Almost 150 regional artists submitted more than 600 artworks for consideration.

Fifty-two artworks, from ceramics, drawing, painting, photography and printmaking to sculpture, by 42 St. Louis regional artists from Missouri and Illinois, were selected. With a large group exhibit like this, making it cohesive is a fun challenge for me and the juror. What are some highlights of the exhibit? This particular exhibition is always exciting because it highlights what makes art in St. Louis so unique and enjoyable. There is a textile piece with a lot of staples in it by St. Louis artist Kenn Ball; a painting by St. Louis artist Aaron Wood, who always brings his art van – a mini-gallery – to receptions; and St. Louis artist Michael Albers’ large homage-style photograph based on the famous painting “Judith and Holofernes” by (Italian painter Giorgio) Vasari. What’s new at Art Saint Louis? We recently held a competition for our Art in the

Heart art installation program in downtown St. Louis. It was open to artists 18 and older living in St. Louis and the surrounding 200-mile radius. Presented in partnership with Downtown STL, Inc., this public art program aims to help continue the revitalization of downtown St. Louis by enhancing the engagement of visitors and residents with their surroundings through an array of interactive and technology-enabled temporary public art displays. Additionally, this exhibition serves Art Saint Louis’ educational programs, including field trips for downtown students. Soon, we will be presenting the second Art in the Heart. After celebrating 30 years last year, what does Art Saint Louis want its next 30 years to look like? We will continue to serve the region’s artists and art supporters, and strive to make even more places to exhibit regional artists’ works – whether that is additional Art Saint Louis galleries, pop-up galleries or off-site exhibit locations. For 2016, we will add an additional juried themed exhibit to our show schedule, allowing artists one more opportunity to show their works in the Art Saint Louis Gallery. 1223 Pine St., St. Louis, 314-241-4810, artsaintlouis.org

Hollywood FROM

Writer and director Vanessa Roman

anessa Roman yells “action!” from the sidewalk in front of Blueberry Hill on the Delmar Loop. Within seconds, a group of actors gather under the restaurant’s bright blue marquee and spring into a funny and fast-paced conversation as cameramen capture the scene from every angle. Passersby frequently pause with interest, excitedly taking in the live-action filming. Last summer, a 25-member cast and 35-person crew – which included a cadre of Hollywood veterans with St. Louis ties – filmed “The Importance of Doubting Tom,” a romantic comedy inspired by Roman’s love story with her husband. The two-week production shot at various popular St. Louis locales, including Blueberry Hill, Tivoli Theatre and Sole & Blues, as well as along Cherokee Street and in Dogtown. Roman, the film’s writer and director, was right at home during filming, having spent much of her childhood and adult years in the Delmar Loop. She even met her husband at Blueberry Hill, where he works today. “I grew up in University City, and fell in love with Blueberry Hill,” Roman says.

So when it came to the setting for “Doubting Tom,” Roman knew it had to be captured in the very places that sparked the script. “I wanted to highlight St. Louis,” she says. The film is one of several movies shot in St. Louis in recent years. “Marshall the Miracle Dog” (2014) and “Grandmothers Murder Club” (set to be released in 2017), among others, have used the Gateway City as a backdrop. Roman’s “Doubting Tom,” is a modern take on Oscar Wilde’s play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Three couples, ranging in age, meet while playing in a dart league at Blueberry Hill – and madness ensues. The dart games become a metaphor for the love games manifesting among the couples, Roman explains. The dart league scenes were shot in Blueberry Hill’s storied Duck Room, which plays host to real dart leagues, as well as the oldest and largest pub dart tournament in North America. “Doubting Tom” is the fifth film and biggest production to date for Roman, a Webster University graduate. And the movie’s leading cast members have an impressive list of credits to their names, from appearances on hit TV shows to roles in award-

winning films. Taking on the lead role of Tom is Brandon Jack James (previously known as Brandon Davis), a Los Angeles native and veteran of episodic TV, including “NCIS” and a regular role on “Even Stevens” with Shia LeBoeuf. James’ real-life girlfriend, Amy Holland Pennell, also plays his on-screen love interest, Gwen. A Saint Louis University alum and former St. Louis Rams cheerleader captain, Holland Pennell has appeared on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “How I Met Your Mother,” as well as the season two finale of “The Newsroom” in a scene with Jane Fonda, Marcia Gay Harden and Sam Waterston. “It’s great to work with Oscar winners, but it’s just as gratifying to work with local actors,” Holland Pennell says. Originally from Granite City, Illinois, Holland Pennell has spent the past nine years in LA, but has never forgotten her Midwestern roots. She frequently returns home to star in productions choreographed by her mother, Margaret, at Summerstage in Granite City, and was thrilled to come back to St. Louis to be part of “Doubting Tom.” Holland Pennell says the best comedies pull at

your heartstrings – and that’s what drew her to this film. “I didn’t put the script down,” she says. “I was invested in the characters and what would happen to them.” The movie opens with a breakup scene between Tom and Gwen, and there are a slew of comedic curves and tender moments along their journey to try to find their way back to each other. With the story being loosely based on Roman’s real-life relationship, Holland Pennell says it was important for the cast to find themselves in the characters and pull from their own real-life experiences to spark compelling performances. “It’s not just a story – it’s her story. So we all want to do an extra-good job.” From Roman’s perspective, Holland Pennell far surpassed that goal. “I felt like I wrote the words for her,” Roman says. The film also features another leading couple, Sally and Joe, played by Julie Piekarski and Gregory Sporleder. Piekarski is a St. Louisan and veteran TV actress (with including appearances on “The Facts of Life,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Three’s Company”). Sporleder attended University City High School with Roman’s husband, John, and recently moved back to St. Louis following a long acting career in LA. After spending much of his childhood in the Delmar Loop, he’s happy to see that while many things have changed, the vibe of the epic street remains the same. “It’s so cool to be back all these years later,” he says. Sporleder says the wide variety of arts programs offered at University City High School allowed him to experiment with performing at a young age. “My mom encouraged me, and I just went for it,” he says. Sporleder soon found himself in Chicago, New York and LA to pursue acting opportunities. Early on, he rubbed elbows with the likes of many of today’s A-list actors, from Jeremy Piven to John Cusack, who also were in the budding stages of their careers at the time. “I was lucky enough to find people to teach me the craft,” Sporleder says.

84   LadueNews.com | October LadueNews.com | october 16, 2015

His breakout role came in 1994 in the film “Renaissance Man” with Danny DeVito, Gregory Hines and Mark Wahlberg. He went on to enjoy a 25-year career in the business, with roles in movies such as “Black Hawk Down” and “Being John Malkovich” and guest appearances on “Friends,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “True Blood.” While Sporleder loved his time in Hollywood, he is excited to be back in St. Louis to raise his family and work in his hometown. As for the highlight of filming “Doubting Tom,” Roman and the actors agree their favorite scene features Holland Pennell’s character, Gwen, crawling through a Dogtown apartment window to see what James’ character, Tom, is doing. “The push-and-pull of their relationship is engaging,” Roman says. Making the movie came with its challenges. Noise from the trolley construction in the Delmar Loop caused several scene retakes, and cameramen had to be careful not to include the construction equipment and garb in the background of outdoor scenes. Even so, Roman says Loop merchants and employees were “incredibly kind and accommodating.” Now that filming has wrapped, the six- to eight-month editing process is underway. Upon completion, Roman hopes to take the film right back to where it was made: “We’re hoping to show it at the Tivoli,” she says.

T

he air is cooling, and the holiday season will be here before you know it. Andrea Ervin, owner of Mama’s on The Hill, says she can’t wait for this busy holiday season, which brings in both loyal longtime patrons and new ones in to host events. “I work so much, but that allows me to meet all the wonderful guests and create exceptional dishes for them, which I love,” she says. Mama’s has provided catering for 12 years, and Ervin says there’s no group too large or too small, as the restaurant can cater for groups from 10 to 1,000 people. Mama’s offers a banquet facility at The Hill location that can hold up to 100 guests, with its own private restrooms, private bar and a private entrance. Each year, the catering business “gets larger and the room books faster and faster,” according to Ervin. Ervin says many people who come into the restaurant for dinner don’t even realize outside catering is available, as well, so she’s always trying to get the word out. “We have a catering menu available, but will gladly create a menu that works best for the event you are hosting,” she says. The restaurant also offers hands-on culinary classes and wine dinners open to everyone. They can also book private classes with 10 or more guest which are great for holiday parties, she adds. To join an open wine dinner or culinary class, email mamasonthehill@gmail.com or get text alerts by texting MAMA to 411669. The restaurant originally opened in the 1940s and

was purchased by Ervin in 2005. And though many local restaurants lay claim to being the birthplace of toasted ravioli, Ervin swears by this St. Louis staple. The restaurant’s claim to fame came when chef Fritz accidently dropped an order of ravioli into hot oil instead of hot water, creating toasted ravioli, she says. But that happy accident isn’t the only thing

that makes Mama’s stand out in its historic Italian neighborhood, Ervin says. “Our attention to detail really sets us apart. We focus on our customers and pride ourselves on not only the service we provide, but also the exceptional quality.” At Mama’s, the staff thinks outside the box and manages to keep the food both authentic and current. Ervin notes that food presentation is just as

important as taste. “You can’t have one without the other, especially with the number of foodies there are nowadays,” she says. “You really have to stay on the top of your game, which can be hard to do at times because there are so many wonderful dishes and creative individuals out there.” In addition to The Hill location, Mama’s is opening up a new location downtown at the end of the month that will offer both dine-in and carryout options. Located at 758 S. Fourth St., the new restaurant has a patio, catering on-site or off and a banquet room that accommodates more than 200 guests. “We’re planning on offering great specials and deals for downtown businesses for after-work events and happy hours,” Ervin says. “At both locations, we’ll have wine dinners and culinary classes, too.” Ervin says she and the rest of the Mama’s family are excited for what the new location will bring, citing the beautiful building and convenient location two blocks from Busch Stadium. “We’re very excited to see what we can do with more space for guests,” she says. “We can’t wait to get their feedback.” Mama’s is offering a 10-percent discount for all holiday parties and catering events booked through the end of October! 2132 Edwards St. “On The Hill,” 314-776-3100; 758 S. Pancreatic Cancer

AWARENESS RECEPTION

A

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

cocktail reception and educational evening was recently hosted by Susie Knopf and Debbie Gilula at the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. Both of Knopf’s and Gilula’s husbands died of pancreatic cancer, and they launched the event to bring awareness and support pancreatic cancer research. Dr. Andrea Wang-Gillam, Dr. Ryan Fields and Dr. Craig Lockhart from Washington University School of Medicine and Siteman Cancer Center spoke with the goal of educating and promoting research to find a cure for the dreaded disease.

It was truly an educational program, and Debbie (Gilula) and I were honored to sponsor it. The guests were amazed at the lack of progress made in diagnosing this disease and learning that it is the No. 4 killer now and expected to become the No. 2 killer within 20 years. Truly frightening. We could think of no better way to honor our husbands, Rik Knopf and Dr. Louis Gilula, than presenting this public service. SUSIE KNOPF, CO-HOST (SHOWN WITH DEBBIE GILULA)

CHEFS’ FEAST FOR A KNIGHT

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

T

he fifth annual Chefs’ Feast for a Knight dinner took place at Loyola Academy of Saint Louis. The event featured the collaboration of five local chefs who prepared a four-course meal while simultaneously raising funds to further Loyola’s mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Guests had the opportunity to interact with each chef at his or her individual appetizer station during the cocktail hour and meet a Loyola student serving as sous chef. Participating chefs were: Aaron Teitelbaum and Chris Vomund of Herbie’s Vintage ‘72, chef Rich LoRusso of LoRusso’s Cucina, chefs Chip Bates and Jon Berger of Cafe Napoli & Napoli2 and chef Brian Doherty of The Block. Ozzie Smith served as honorary chairman and emcee.

The fifth year of the Chefs’ Feast for a Knight was one of our most successful years. It is amazing that the event has not only become better each year but has grown in success. This year’s chefs where so energetic and excited all the way through the event. We are looking forward to next year already. AARON TEITELBAUM, HERBIE’S VINTAGE ‘72 OWNER (SHOWN WITH WIFE, MARCI)

CHEFS IN A GARDEN

S

Photos and story by David Anderson

ome of St. Louis’ most talented chefs gathered at Palladium Saint Louis to prepare their signature dishes for a good cause, as Gateway Greening hosted its 18th annual Chefs in a Garden fundraising event. All proceeds benefit Gateway Greening’s programming, which strenghtens communities through gardening and urban agriculture. Chair of the event was Jenna Davis. KMOX’s Debbie Monterrey served as emcee. Chefs and restaurants participating in this year’s event included Lona Powers of Lona’s Lil Eats; Bradley Hoffmann of Planter’s House; John Perkins of Juniper; Adam Karl Gnau of Acero; Chris Bolyard of Bolyard’s Meat & Provisions; Seth Verseman of 1904 Steakhouse; Tyson and Anna Long of Winslow’s Home; Nicholas Hatfield of Food Outreach; Ivy Magruder of Panorama; Sandia Hoorman of Piccione and Bethany Budde of SqWires.

I am pleased with the outcome of the 18th annual Chefs in a Garden. The event raised more than $100,000 that will benefit all of Gateway Greening’s garden programs. I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor St. Louis Composting and their continued support of Gateway Greening. A special thank you to all of the Chefs in a Garden sponsors and attendees.
