Your essential coffee shop. Your go-to takeout pick. Your favorite park. Personally, I never feel at home in a neighborhood until I find “my” bookstore. That’s what I love most about our annual Neighborhoods edition. I relish the opportunity to learn which local gems – hidden or wellknown – made my metro area neighbors say, “This is the place. This is where I want to live.” Flip to Page 39 for this year’s special section, in which LN contributors Alecia Humphreys and Drew Gieseke share the top five ways to have the perfect day in each neighborhood in the Ladue News distribution area. Preparing this week for date night with your valentine in your neighborhood? Turn to Page 67 for LN regular Brittany Nay’s top recommendations. To learn about some of the important work taking place in the metro area right now, turn to Page 20, where LN contributor Connie Mitchell details Washington University in St. Louis’ current focus on racial equity in Alzheimer’s research, thanks to $7 million in recently awarded grants. Further, check out Page 16 for Gieseke’s interview with one of the leaders behind the massive renovation of the Vashon Community Center at Harris-Stowe State University – a project that also is serving to confront the complicated history of the building, which was constructed because of historic segregationist policies in St. Louis. Engaging
Students WITH THEIR COMMUNITY By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of Rohan Woods

ducation isn’t just about preparing students for a career; it’s about preparing students to be a part of their communities. Through a Project Approach and hands-on learning, Rohan Woods School teaches its pillars of respect, responsibility and leadership to children from prekindergarten to sixth grade, encouraging them to be active participants in their neighborhoods and community. “Project Approach allows kids to not only learn about projects of great interest to them but learn how to do their own research and design how they want to share with an audience,” explains Sam Page, the head of school. Middle school teacher Alex Dzurick agrees that Project-Based Learning is an integral part of teaching children realworld skills. “That hands-on, practical, start-and-complete-a-project-onyour-own approach – that’s how they’re going to apply their knowledge in
10
the real world,” he says. “These realistic situations show students how not only to collect their knowledge but how to apply it.” Working in small groups, students learn the importance of teamwork, as well as how to have creative and productive conversations, and gain confidence in public speaking through a presentation to the school at the end of each project. “Students can learn what kind of a partner they are,” Page adds “They can identify what they do well and set goals on areas they need to grow for their next project.” Rohan Woods uses the Project Approach not only to help students learn for real-world situations but also to help them learn how they can impact the community around them. A recent example of this is the sixth grade leadership class and its current water-efficiency project. “I was connected to a program with Ameren and Spire about water and efficiency,” Dzurick says. “I have a background in sustainability, and I thought this was a perfect way to make an impact on these kids.”

Dzurick and Page both agree that Rohan Woods is blessed by its small size, which allows the school to have such unique learning programs that every student is able to participate in, as well as creating a tightknit, familylike environment. Students are able to socialize with different age groups regularly, broadening their experiences and improving their confidence. Driven by its mission and pillars, Rohan Woods prepares students not only for their next academic step but also for how to be active and engaged members of their community, teaching the next generation of inspiring leaders. “We are really proud that we can be a part of that journey,” Page concludes. Rohan Woods School, 1515 Bennett Ave., St. Louis, 314-821-6270, rohanwoods.org Students take a few minutes to check the honeybees in the indoor observation hive.
Ameren and Spire ship kits with materials that increase energy efficiency within the home, including low-flow showerheads, a whistle to alert the homeowner when his or her furnace filter is getting clogged and more. Every member of the sixth grade leadership class at Rohan Woods will be given several days to learn how each material works, and then be able to make additional kits with instructions that the students will take into their homes, as well as gift to the school’s faculty. “It’s as a thank-you and also a way to take the project and make an impact,” Dzurick explains. “They’ll learn it, impact it at home, and then, based on what they learn, they can take it one step further and give back to the people who gave to them before they move on from the school.” Furthermore, this serves as an innovative way to share energysaving solutions. Dzurick hopes to see the information gathered by students spread from their families and faculty into neighborhoods and communities. “Ameren and Spire are gracious to sponsor it – it’s an amazing opportunity for students to dig into something meaningful with a direct impact,” he says.

DEPRESSION IN TEENS By Dr. Joseph Kahn
D
epression is a significant mental health problem in teens, occurs in as many as 20 percent of all adolescents and occurs more often in girls than boys. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on it, it’s actually been on the rise during the past 10 to 12 years, with an estimated 50 percent increase in both the diagnosis of depression and in the suicide rate for adolescents. It’s not a weakness, however, and can’t be resolved with willpower or positive thinking; rather, depression is a serious – and occasionally fatal – illness. Risk factors for depression correlate with issues of self-esteem, such as: Suffering from a negative body image. Experiencing academic problems or the presence of a learning disability or ADHD. Being bullied. Having a chronic illness. Being in a threatening or nonsupportive
environment as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Depression can also be familial, so be aware of family history. Symptoms vary but often include changes in emotional well-being and behavior. Emotional changes include feelings of sadness, anger, hopelessness, worthlessness or emptiness. There may be a loss of interest in usual activities and fixation on personal failures. Thoughts of death or suicide deserve immediate attention. Behavioral changes may include fatigue, sleeping too much or too little, changes in appetite, restlessness and anxiety, poor school performance, angry outbursts, substance abuse and lack of attention to personal hygiene. Of course, the teen years are a challenge for all, so it might be difficult to identify signs and symptoms of depression. If you’re concerned, talk to your teen and your teen’s doctor. See a doctor with your child if symptoms begin to interfere with daily life, school performance or

relationships with friends. Your child’s primary care physician has easy-to-use tools to screen for depression and should do so at every routine visit. Seek emergency help if you think your child is considering harming himself or herself, or harming others. Treatment may include psychotherapy with or without antidepressant medications. Parents can help prevent depression by helping their teen address stress, reaching out with support, identifying signs and seeking treatment as early as possible when concerns arise. If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

INNOVATION HUB
Restored and Re-Imagined By Drew Gieseke Photos courtesy of Harris-Stowe State University

n late 2021, Harris-Stowe State University kicked off a $3 million renovation of the historic Vashon Community Center in St. Louis. The center originally operated as the only public recreational facility open to the metro area’s African American community in the segregation era. The re-imagined center will soon serve a vital role in chronicling the metro area’s Black history and culture. The restoration is years in the making, but leaders of the project say it will be well worth the wait. “The project’s primary goals have always been to restore the building to its original state,” says LaTonia Collins Smith, interim president at HSSU, a historically black college and university institution. She adds that the university plans to honor the historic nature of the facility while making modifications “to meet the physical and operational needs of the proposed programs to be housed within the building.” Nestled in the Mill Creek Valley area of St. Louis, Vashon opened in 1937 as one of the many public works projects implemented under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program. Yet unlike many well-known New Deal constructions

– including the Hoover Dam and the Lincoln Tunnel – Vashon was constructed because of racial segregation policies that were legal in St. Louis at the time. “African American youth were not allowed to swim or participate in other recreational activities at community centers within the city designated for use by white youth,” Smith says. Soon after its debut, the building became home to cultural events and gatherings for the Black community. Many decades later, in 1999, HSSU purchased Vashon and its land from the city. After years of planning, the university is now renovating the 15,421-square-foot site thanks to a combination of state funding, donations from the National Park Service and institutional dollars.
Vashon’s renovation will also include the relocation of the Don and Heide Wolff Jazz Institute and the National Black Radio Hall of Fame. In addition, the renovated facility will house civil rights collections to serve as a reminder of the city and the country’s segregationist past and to directly link the civil rights movement to this history. Smith says the university anticipates the project to be finished by this fall. Once open, Vashon will be a facility re-imagined – a place that teaches Black history while standing as a new gathering spot for the metro area community.

LESSONS LEARNED
Homeschooling Innovators By Drew Gieseke | Photos courtesy of CASCO
I
n 2020, educators Maria J. Casco and Jenna M. Hill left their roles teaching in local Montessori schools to launch CASCO Learning – a family-centered co-op based in Chesterfield that empowers parents who choose to homeschool their children. It was a big leap, but it was one that both felt was essential in today’s changing society. “We feel like we’re pioneers in the education world,” Casco says. “The world came to a halt during the [COVID-19] pandemic. Both Jenna and I come from Montessori worlds, and we decided to create something new and different and progressive in this new educational model.” The CASCO Learning model consists of three core structures: an on-site education center for homeschool and school instruction, domestic

and international family travel trips, and a future foundation coming soon. Combined, this novel approach draws from a variety of different schooling methods, from Montessori instruction to Waldorf methods to traditional education. Parents can visit the organization’s learning center to access tools and resources not only to instruct their own children but also to get involved – and invested – in this education. In so doing, the team behind CASCO Learning believes parents and kids can bypass stuffier, more rigid approaches to learning. “What we’re training our future generations is that learning is a chore or that it’s no fun,” Casco says of the typical approach. “We’re really focused on the intellectual vitality of these children who are going to grow up to be
problem-solvers and solution-seekers.” One of the most notable components of CASCO Learning is its instruction outside the traditional classroom. Approximately 25 to 50 families embark on regular field trips to demonstrate that learning happens everywhere – not just at a desk in a classroom. This year, the group plans to travel to Mexico to take in sights and culture available only in person. CASCO Learning worked with a travel agency to make it easy for families to book travel accommodations. Along the way, children and parents alike will learn about life in U.S.’s southern neighbor, Mexican history and the Spanish language. Casco says these experiences are essential, now more than ever. “The world has changed, and so should education,” she says. “This is our time to do it.”

Racial equity in Alzheimer’s research is receiving focus, thanks to $7 million in grants recently awarded to a local university.
W
ith more than $7 million in new grant funding, two research teams at Washington University in St. Louis are tackling the complex web of issues that contribute to Black Americans’ increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Both projects, funded by the National Institute on Aging, aim to help determine how genetic, behavioral and cultural factors combine to affect disease risk and incidence in the Black community. Joyce Balls-Berry, Ph.D., an associate professor of neurology, is passionate about her community and wants to ensure Black and other minority populations are represented in Alzheimer’s research. Her father was a health commissioner for East St. Louis, and Balls-Berry grew up in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. She sees her work as continuing his legacy. “As a Black woman scientist, I’ve often noticed that there aren’t enough of us at the research table in terms of deciding on the science and how we can connect directly to communities we want to gain insight from,” she says. The $3.4 million grant awarded to Balls-Berry’s research team funds the creation of a registry of 2,000 new volunteers from historically underrepresented groups to participate in upcoming Alzheimer’s disease studies. With the initiative, dubbed the COEQUAL Registry (Creating
Opportunities to Increase Health Equity and Equality for Persons at Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias), she hopes to construct a long-term resource to help increase minority research participation. “We’ve seen that the Black community is often not approached or is approached in inappropriate ways for our cultural stance,” Balls-Berry says. “And once we engage Black people (who then participate in studies), how do we retain them?” By reaching out to community members and health care providers, Balls-Berry aims first to determine exactly what the Black community in the greater St. Louis area knows about Alzheimer’s disease and research opportunities in general. She also will assess available health promotion materials, using a National Institute of Aging framework, to gauge whether they are culturally relevant. “Then we’ll build the research registry and make it more than just a database – it will be more interactive,” she says. Looking to the future, Balls-Berry says: “I would hope we have, from a research stance, more understanding of the cultural relevance of why communities of color will or will not engage in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia research, and also what we can do to keep them active in this research process.” Meanwhile, Balls-Berry’s colleagues – Darrell Hudson, Ph.D., associate
professor of social work at the Brown School, and Ganesh Babulal, Ph.D., OTD, assistant professor of neurology – will be using a $3.7 million grant to investigate risk factors for cognitive decline among Black Americans. Their study is titled “ARCHES: Aging Research Characterizing Health Equity via Social determinants.” “We already have biomarker studies looking at the proteins in the brain, which provide precious insight into the patho-physiological process,” Babulal says. “Since we know that African Americans are at about twice the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, you would think that the biomarkers would show higher levels, but they typically have lower levels compared to non-Hispanic white [individuals]. So what we want to look at are the social determinants of health.” Although genes and behaviors contribute to overall risk, environmental and social influences are responsible for up to 80 percent of an individual’s health outcomes, he notes. Access to health care and the ability to manage stress largely depend on one’s community and resources. Babulal and Hudson plan to use blood samples to study biological markers in relation to self-reported stress, discrimination and depression in 300 participants. “These are pieces that are really important to study to see how they might increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” Babulal says. The team will draw on the NIA Health Disparities Research Framework, which identifies environmental, sociocultural, behavioral and biological dimensions of health. A community advisory board will help recruit participants from various ZIP codes and age groups. “Many studies have compared one minoritized group to another or whites,” Babulal says. “We’re just looking within the Black American cohort to understand the heterogeneity or diversity within that sample. Only once we have a more profound understanding within the sample can we do a true comparison with other ethnic groups.” Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center, 4488 Forest Park, Suite 101, St. Louis, 314-286-2683, knightadrc.wustl.edu

hen Joni Spear of Joni Spear Interior Design was tasked with transforming an office into a truck-themed toddler’s room, she delivered – in a bold, beautiful way. “For the new bedroom, mom requested a bold, colorful space with a truck theme,” Spear says. “The existing office had no door and was located at the end of a long, dark hallway that had been painted black by the last homeowners.” The first order of business was to lighten the hallway and create a space for functioning doors. “The awkward architecture of the room – with three alcove windows, slanted ceilings and built-in bookcases – proved an inconvenient location for furniture placement,” Spear says. However, this challenge ultimately worked to the 2-year-old tenant’s benefit. “We opted to place the bed close the wall so the 2-year-old wouldn’t fall out,” Spear says. “The

solid wood bed and nightstand were constructed in the U.S. and painted in vibrant shades to match the bedding and Roman shades.” The shades played perfectly with the striking stripes. “The amazing irregular wall stripes were inherited from the previous homeowner, but were also black and proved too dark for a toddler,” Spear says. “Both myself and the client loved them and decided to have them repainted in a daring blue.” That motif was carried into the window seats, as well. “[The] window seats and a built-in toy storage were constructed to make use of the alcove windows,” Spear says. “Now the room is not only fun and bright, but also functional.”

on’t dillydally – Daffodilly, an Affton-based online boutique, is adorning kids with cute, contemporary clothes that are a must for modern-day parents. “It’s contemporary, stylish clothing for babies and toddlers,” says Rachel Rosser, who co-owns Daffodilly with her husband, Brian. “We also have accessories and gifts, as well: books, teethers, all sorts of little items that could go with a onesie or sleeper – but for more modern tastes.” It’s something the couple felt the market was missing. “My husband and I met working in retail at a local store, we ended up getting pregnant, and then we kind of realized the gap in the St. Louis market for the kind of style that we c were looking for to dress our baby in,” Rosser says. “There’ss a lot of cutesyy clothes out there, but we are more about the modern, stylish baby/m y/mom who o wants wa to dress her baby in that way. We looked around in St. Louiis, and it seemed like too many options for that were not exactly wh hat we were looking for. And we just decided to kind of go for it.” Thus, last September, Daffodilly was born. The brand has since bloomed thanks to the Rossers’ participation in pop-ups. “When you’re online, it’s hard to get the name out because you don’t have foot traffic like you would in Kirkwood or Webster,” Rosser says. “We did pop-ups prettyy much anywhere we could attend, and they were all really great. People would come up and be like, ‘Oh, these are thee cutest baby clothes I’ve ever seen.’” That reaction was the goal for Rosser. “When you’re a new mom, you receive so many clothes that you may not necessarily be excited about,” Rosser says. “You’re happy to have something that your baby can get dirty that you don’t neceessarilyy care about, but I think a lot of our clothes are pieces that a e really special, really cute, really Instagram-worthy clothes that you oung peoplee want to put their baby in and that are very compliment-wo orthy.” Daffodilly clothes range from one-pieces (onesies, footiie pajamas and rompers) to jogger bottoms, cute patterned sweat setss aand tops – which range from graphic tees to hoodies to garter-s -stitch cardigans – in sizes from baby up to 5T. “I see babies dressed in, you know, khakis or little bow w tties and thin n like that, but we are definitely more about comfort,” Rosserr ssays. “W ove sweatsuits. We love sleepers. We love the bubble-butt sweaatshir mp p pers that are just oversized and cute. We are definitely about comfort.” That comfort is complemented by quality. “If I ever feel like something isn’t up to standards, I just return it because after my husband and I both worked in retail, we just know that things will come back to bite you if it’s not good quality for people,” Rosser says. “You get what you pay for; that’s definitely what I think to a certain extent.” In addition to clothes, Daffodilly carries accessories such as beaniees, bows, bucket hats, socks and silicone bibs, as well as extras like books, s, blankets and a bunny ‘lovey.’ Daffodilly adds new items weekly and offers local delivery, porch pick-up and shipping. “For the local delivery, I have delivered something to somebody’s h within, like, one hour, but it really depends on when you get me,” Rosse ays. “But it’s technically one to four business days on the local delivery.” business. Quilts This metro area quilter has re-envisioned the simple bedcover as an exquisite exercise in chic comfort.

L
inda Caplinger isn’t just creating contemporary quilts – she’s creating a precious piece of hygge for your home. And hygge – the Danish term meaning the feeling of cozy contentment – is what Caplinger is all about. “Quilts are made to be loved and cherished, passed down through many generations, and to create warm feelings of home and tradition, safety and security,” says Caplinger, who founded Bee Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) in October 2019. “While hygge may look different to each person, the feelings are all the same. Your home, your space, should be a place that embodies warmth, joy and contentment. My comfy couch, my favorite quilt, daydreaming while watching the rain … that’s hygge! I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t want that or need it or even just recognize the importance of it.” It’s a concept Caplinger believes her quilts eloquently complement. “I describe my quilts as being wrapped in a hug,” Caplinger says. “When you have that texture, the warmth … Those two things

combined can be very comforting for people.” Bee Hygge quilts are often made of a linen blend. “The reason I love it so much is linen can be very cooling to the touch, and it is also insulating, so it’s not seasonal,” Caplinger explains. “It’s also very textured, so it doesn’t have the sheen or sleekness of some of the cottons.” Customers can also choose between a 100 percent wool or cotton batting, which is the centermost layer to a quilt. “Wool batting is the warmest and makes a lightweight, yet lofty, quilt with just the right amount of puff,” Caplinger says. “Cotton batting provides warmth and a heavier, smoother finish.” However, it’s not only the comfort that has captured the attention of clients but also the aesthetic. “I normally use all solid colors, which is more modern than some of the traditional printed fabrics that have been used forever,” Caplinger says. By way of example, the Affinity quilt, which was designed by Caplinger herself, is available in three colorways: cool neutrals (shades of gray and a dusty blue), warm neutrals (taupes and olive green) and black and white. “I designed it to have a more of a simplistic, minimalist feel to it,” Caplinger says. “I have a personal attraction to the moon and mountains. We have a cabin in the mountains in Colorado, and that is a place where I love to go to just be surrounded in nature. Everything about it is serene. So I brought both of those concepts into my pattern.” However, it certainly isn’t the only pattern to pick from, as Caplinger also creates custom quilts. So regardless of whether you need a quilt to coordinate with a nursery or simply something soft to snuggle, she has options for you. “We go through patterns, we go through colors, and if you have something in mind you’ve seen, I can incorporate that as well,” Caplinger says. “I’ve also done quilts where people give me a color palette or a mom-to-be sends me their Pinterest board of their nursery. That’s been fun, to see how they want their Pinterest-perfect nursery and how I can design a quilt that fits into that.” And with Caplinger at the helm, you’re sure to receive a handcrafted, heartfelt heirloom. “All of my quilts are done on a domestic sewing machine, so I think that adds much more of a personal touch to it, to know that this quilt has been in my hands for this long,” Caplinger says. “And I have loved every single custom quilt that I’ve ever made. It’s really a labor of love. Some I might not have chosen that pattern or I might not have chosen those colors or that fabric, but once it starts coming together, I just completely fall in love with every quilt I make. THE TOP PICKS IN THE ST. LOUIS METRO AREA
T
he past couple of years have helped us to appreciate more than ever before local gems that are close to home. From parks that give us the opportunity for fresh air and sunshine, to boutiques that allow us to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones, to restaurants that serve as places to gather and enjoy one another’s company – days spent in our favorite neighborhoods are what make up a lifetime of memories. In this annual special section, we recognize the communities that shape the metro area by highlighting some of the best ways to have a perfect day in each neighborhood in our distribution area. Because as we’re sure the iconic Mister Rogers would agree, it truly is a beautiful day when you live in neighborhoods like these – next to neighbors like you.

t’s no surprise Ballwin has been named one of America’s “best places to live” by Money Magazine three times – and it’s because of its low crime rate, lauded schools and proximity to state parks. Start the day with something freshly baked at The Daily Bread Bakery & Cafe before taking a stroll at the city’s 42-plus-acre park, Des Peres Park, which boasts a lavish lake, terrific trails and playground perfection. End the day with dinner at Circle 7 Ranch and a movie at Marcus Theatres before retiring for the evening.

THE DAILY BREAD BAKERY & CAFE
leannesetien@ janetmcafee.com Des Peres is in St. Louis County and is one of the best places to live in Missouri. Many retirees live in Des Peres but in recent years, it has become home for many young families. It is rated by Niche Best Places as #13 of #145 best places to raise a family. When I drive through Des Peres, I see plenty of green spaces and trees offering a beautiful landscape with neighborhoods tucked away. Des Peres is a lovely community full of wonderful local shops and the West County Mall where residents love to frequently shop with their fellow neighbors. This community offers suburb living with easy access to major highways of Saint Louis, 40 and 270. Schools are among top rated in the state, including Parkway and Kirkwood schools. The parks are full of life! Playgrounds and splash pads for children, softball fields and tennis cour ts, paved trails and a lake that is visited by individuals and families wanting to fish, all in the hear t of the metropolitan area. The city of Des Peres is home to many major hospitals, such as Missouri Baptist and Mercy, making this an ideal home for medical professions. 2021/2022 and the pandemic trends are showing that single family homes in the suburbs are highly desirable and Des Peres is the community that would be a perfect fit for anyone. This must be why the population trend is growing with individuals and families choosing to stay in this amazing community.

RED CARPET EVENT

Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
ontestants for the first tandem Miss Missouri Volunteer and Miss Missouri Teen Volunteer pageant (planned to be an annual event) wowed guests and judges at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center on Jan. 8. After contestants (each in her best “winter chic” wear) walked the red carpet, they fielded questions from emcees Amber Johansen and Jillian McKay about their volunteer platforms. At the pageant, 11 Miss Missouri Teen and 12 Miss Missouri contestants vied in talent, evening gown, and fitness and wellness events, as well as a private interview. Greta Clark, Miss Forest Park Teen, was crowned Miss Missouri Teen Volunteer. Victoria Shore, Miss Mizzou Volunteer, was crowned Miss Missouri Volunteer. Clark’s platform supports the Ronald McDonald House: Built by Kindness initiative, and Shore’s focuses on Women in Media: Representation, Empowerment and Media Literacy. Family and close friends attended the gala, as did five judges. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!
The inaugural Miss Missouri Volunteer pageant exceeded my highest expectations. It was truly focused on making the event all about the 23 outstanding young women that competed and the 11 princesses. I am so appreciative of every person who contributed to the $25,000 in scholarships and the $10,000 package of sponsorships. With the fabulous board and other volunteers we have, we produced a first-class event that made me proud!” – MARY ANN OWENS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CC’s Vegan Spot C By Mabel Suen
C’s Vegan Spot, which opened last July in St. Louis’ Princeton Heights neighborhood after operating for two years in Alton, features food from chef-owner Trezel Brown. For Brown, who’s been vegan for seven years, the move across the Mississippi positions her closer to a clientele that’s eager to experience her plant-based fare. She originally opened the business as CC’s Icees Galore in 2019. As such, she served East Coast-style nondairy frozen treats inspired by her hometown of Harlem, New York. After the menu added her vegan broccoli-cheddar soup and chili, the establishment fast evolved into a full-fledged casual restaurant. “We put the soul in vegan food,” Brown says. “My vision was to create a vegan restaurant that would offer many options for all who come to dine with us. I wanted people to feel satisfied knowing they ate some delicious, home-style cooking.” Named after her granddaughter, who’s also

vegan, CC’s Vegan Spot features Brown’s creative takes on comfort-food classics, including the soups that started it all, alongside appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers. From the menu, customers can choose from signatures like the Double Trouble Burger, which features two patties – one made with eggplant and one made with beets and other veggies – topped with house coleslaw (“RaiSlaw”), vegan cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickles and SpiciLee barbecue sauce, named after local musician Murphy Lee, a member of hip-hop’s St. Lunatics. The same sauce comes with one of CC’s bestselling items: fried mushrooms, which also can be paired with mashed potatoes smothered with gravy for a dinner entrée. Another highlight, the Rotel Nacho Supreme, comprises chips topped with vegan Italian sausage cooked in house-made vegan cheese, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, black olives, salsa, shredded vegan cheese and vegan sour cream. CC’s likewise
plates vegan versions of a fried chicken Parmesan sandwich and a Philly (“Illy”) cheesesteak. Going forward, Brown hopes to introduce her granddaughter’s desserts, such as vegan cheesecake with strawberries, and to expand her brand in the near future with a second location in north St. Louis County. The 1,000-square-foot counter-service restaurant currently offers online ordering for carryout and delivery. Seating remains available indoors, as well as on a front patio.

READY READERS
Olympic Adventures By Sheila Oliveri
J
ust in time for the Winter Olympics, which take place through Feb. 20, Ready Readers recommends “Lucy Tries Luge,” a simple, fun introduction to a winter sport experienced by few children in the Midwest. Canadian writer Lisa Bowes and illustrator James Hearne offer readers a young heroine who, despite being wary of trying a new and potentially scary sport, bravely embarks on a thrilling ride down the “wild tunnel slide” track. Bowes’ rhyming text should invite even the youngest listeners to engage in Lucy’s story, and Hearne pictures a child with whom most readers, young and old, can relate: freckled, with hair in her eyes and a determined grin on her face. The story begins as Lucy and her floppyeared dog gaze with excitement at her shiny new red luge. Her parents provide both encouragement and important equipment, including “a helmet for safety and a race shirt for speed,” allowing Lucy to summon the courage to
take on this sledding challenge. With her ponytail tucked into her helmet and her eyes guarded by goggles, Lucy pushes off from the start house, while watched from a distance by her dog. The story continues as Lucy slides down straightaways and barrels around bends, finishing her run and proudly celebrating her accomplishment with her family. Bowes provides interesting and accurate vocabulary and age-appropriate descriptions of the equipment used, the techniques employed and the rush of excitement felt by the title character. Parents may be especially grateful for the “Fast Facts” list at the end of the book, which may provide answers to offer children unfamiliar with the sport. To connect a local child’s experiences with Lucy’s, compare your family’s own sled or toboggan with the luge shown in the book. Similarities and differences alike should be easily
found, prompting children to recall the delight of their first slide down a neighborhood slope.

ARTS SPEAK
CITYSCAPES WITH ÉCLAT Ballwin artist Janet Muhm’s visual gems displayed under the rubric A Year in the City recall the deceptively simple elegance of contemporary Franco-American illustrator Guy Billout. Since 2018, Muhm has issued blissful calendars (and subsequently, cards of various types, bookmarks, framed and unframed archival prints, and T-shirts) spotlighting area landmarks like Art Hill under snow, the Katy Trail during prime bicycling season and the Sheldon just before a concert. Muhm recently paused amid her artistic endeavors to briefly discuss A Year in the City. What artists do you regard as your greatest influences? “I was fascinated by the illustrations of Peter Max and Milton Glaser when I was a kid. I loved the bright colors and humor in their work. When I was 8, I started keeping sketchbooks with my own Glaser/Max-style drawings and ads for makebelieve companies. My Wash U education kept me headed in that direction. I studied with Gene Hoefel, who taught me that it was all about the big idea. And I took color theory and illustration from Bill Kohn. I use those principles every day in my work for A Year in the City.” Since your first A Year in the City calendar, which single image has most enchanted you personally? “I’m crazy about the McDonnell Planetarium, not just for the art, but for the story. The kids are
66
FEBRUARY 4, 2022 | LadueNews.com
looking up at the statue. The statue is looking up at the stars. There are layers of childlike wonder there, and the colors are beautiful. But truthfully, my favorite illustration is whichever one I’m working on at the moment! St. Louis’ favorite places come to life when you put people in them. What starts off as a building or a park or a statue becomes a visual story.” Which image has most challenged you in its creation? “City Museum was challenging for a few reasons. First, I was creating art from art, so out of respect for [museum founder] Bob Cassilly, I wanted to stay true to the real thing. Second, there was an insane amount of detail. And finally, the natural materials made it hard to capture that
detail. But in the end, it was worth every minute I put into it. City Museum is a treasure. The art draws you in.” What lessons have you brought to your augmented camera-plus-Adobe Illustrator artistic procedure? “I no longer worry about taking great pictures. I take mediocre pictures that capture lots of detail. The photos will get tossed. The colors and light will be addressed as part of the illustrative process. My process has stayed the same since the beginning, but my illustration is evolving. For one thing, I’m much more detailed than I was five years ago. Sometimes, the details carry a picture, so I push myself to go the extra mile.” What teasers would you care to share regarding subjects for the 2023 A Year in the City calendar? “I create at least one Forest Park image a year because there’s so much to see there. For 2023, I’ll be featuring the World’s Fair Pavilion on the cover. I think it has a “big park” feel to it, the sense that there’s plenty of park for all of us to share and enjoy. In addition to the 2023 calendar, I’ll be expanding my product line this year to include new greeting cards and a new limited-edition T-shirt. My only rules for new products are that they tell a St. Louis story and bring joy!”
