One such example is Camp Kesem, a free weeklong summer camp through Saint Louis University for children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer. Kids ranging from ages 6 to 18 get to venture to Sunnyhill Adventures Center in Dittmer for swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, and more, but what sets Camp Kesem apart from a typical summer camp is its built-in support system, with a 3:1 camper-to-counselor ratio. Congratulations to the Missouri Historical Society for being announced as one of 29 finalists for the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services – the government agency that is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 120,000 libraries and 35,000 museums, according to a press release. Finalists are selected because of their significance and exceptional contributions to their communities, and the National Medal is the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries for community service.

The Arcus Awards, hosted by the St. Louis Regional Chamber, honor “companies, organizations and institutions that demonstrate exceptional commitment to leading the St. Louis region’s authentic economic strengths and championing a better tomorrow for the region,” and they recently recognized Fontbonne University with the People’s Choice Award. This honor was specifically recognizing Fontbonne Promise, a “recently announced scholarship program designed to make the dream of a debt-free, private college education a reality for low-income students.”

pring, the season of renewal, brings hope for fresh beginnings. Children can’t wait to step outside and experience longer days – days spent riding bicycles, jumping in rain puddles and discovering the world outside their front door. For some children though, days are spent getting blood draws, spinal taps and medication, which can lead to an immune deficiency and time in a hospital. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) wants to change that for children who are battling cancer, with a spring egg hunt whose name says it all: Hunt for a Cure. “LLS is making a great difference in people’s lives,” Bob O’Loughlin, chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM), says. “The money raised from the event goes toward medical research, and helping families and their children. Kids get to see the LLS bunny arrive by helicopter, and have fun in Queeny Park. It’ll be a good time to go out and support a [wonderful] cause.” This memorable event is already making a tremendous difference in the lives of its three honored heroes: Johnny, Alexia and Mason, who are cancer patients. Johnny’s mom, Sarah Grames, shares the alarming experience that led to her young son’s diagnosis. “We found lumps on his neck,” Grames describes. “We spent about four months taking Johnny back and forth from the doctor’s office. They kept telling me it was a virus. Finally, they did a biopsy on his neck and confirmed it was cancerous. They found leukemia in his blood cells and did further testing to see what kind. He has acute lymphoblastic leukemia.” Grames’ tenacity as an advocate for her child surely inspired Johnny as he prepared for the battle of a lifetime. “If you know there’s something wrong, keep fighting [for an answer],” she says. “It’s scary to see your baby so sick. So, speak up [on his or her behalf].”

Heroic assistance came in the form of an organization that is driven to eliminate cancer for all by raising funds for significant medical advancements. “LLS taught us what to expect,” Grames shares. “It has given us the tools to cope. Johnny’s amazing. He’s a little scared but so excited [about being an honored hero].” The soon-to-be six-year-old and his family will join others in this day of delight, filled with nursery rhyme characters, pony rides, a petting zoo and more. It will give them a chance to celebrate the joy of life with their supporters. “Everybody knows what leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are about and how they affect all people, especially children,” O’Loughlin reminds us. “Please make a commitment to volunteering or writing checks out to LLS in support of this cause.” Give hope for the future when you join LLS in search of a cure at this spring event. he hottest cocktail party in town rocked on Jan. 19, when more than 450 friends of World Pediatric Project gathered at Old Warson Country Club for an evening of inspiration. There they heard from World Pediatric Project patient Erickson, age 13, from Guatemala, who shared his story of the lifesaving treatment that he received. He urged guests to “give a lot more kids like him a happy ending.” As guests entered the room, they were awed by an art installation of 2,292 paper doves, representing every child served by the project over the past year. This unique evening featured a luxury vacation auction, a cocktail buffet, fine wines and the opportunity to meet children undergoing care. Through attendees’ generosity in sponsorships and donations, a record-breaking $865,000 was raised to assist children from the Caribbean and Central America needing pediatric medical care not available in their home countries. Every $1 contributed delivers $4 in advanced pediatric care through donations by the project’s partner hospitals, medical volunteers, medical supply companies and housing partners. Funds raised at the event will help realize the goal of doubling the patient census by the 2023 to serve an additional 2,000 children annually, resulting in thousands of children being helped sooner.

Helping children who urgently need life-changing and often lifesaving surgical care is deeply gratifying. Knowing that each and every child is special and will go on to live a healthy, productive life and make a difference in the world inspires me to keep fighting for them. he 2018 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show took place in Orlando, Florida, in January, and from it, a quintet of trends seemed apparent: 1. Rustic finishes and materials. If French provincial ranks as your exprimer des préférences, then this trend should remain très chic with design build. Barnwood accent walls with distressed cabinets in gray-wash stains similarly are holding strong ontrend, as are vintage wrought-iron light fixtures. 2. Out with the old, in with the new. With mixed materials, colors, finishes and metals, the heavy eclectic look and feel enjoyed considerable visibility at the show. The Tru booth showcased a mix of cobalt blue with brushed gold, with bold colors and bright accents (like Bright apron sinks and red faucets). Furthermore, colors not normally seen together meshed flawlessly. This new trend effectively threw out the window the rules of design. 3. Black and gold art deco. Matte black remains strong in design with hardware, lighting and cabinetry. Brushed gold and brass emerge as the key accent with matte black. The look and style echo the original Art Deco of the Roaring ’20s,

albeit with a contemporary, 21st-century feel. 4. Modern and sleek options. A more European influence predominated among options and items. Clean lines and high-gloss finishes in cabinetry specifically showcased modern Italian designs. Also, these modern options paired with rustic pieces for a more eclectic look. Adding natural elements softens the overall modern trend. 5. Smart products. Technology has become a major design feature, with “smart” products connected to all devices. For instance, consumers now can control their appliances even when away from home. Inside-the-fridge videos and photos also can be transmitted to such consumers while they shop for groceries. Stressing at work about getting dinner on the table? No problem – preheat the oven while leaving the office. Also growing in popularity and use are touchless faucets or faucets that can measure or fill a sink via vocal control. Similarly, smart showers and bathrooms appeal with their efficiency and technological luxury. Presently, smart appliances will become integral to the home experience – so if a given appliance or device doesn’t already connect to Alexa, it had better do so soon!

From idea to fruition, each piece created by Rustic Grain goes through an extensive process, with an approximate eight-week lead time. Clients must first f set up a meeting with Nummela, who will sit down with them to discuss their individual wants and needs for a custom piece. “We want to be focused on them the whole time,” Nummela says. “That’s the great part about custom furniture: It’s more than just a process between you and the wood. You get to engage with these great people.” In-house designer Matthew Roeleveld then designs the bespoke piece, which can take up to two weeks. ustic Before Roeleveld can get to work, though, Ru Grain’s partner reclaimers dismantle the barn that will be used for a given piece. All surface nails are removed from the wood, and it is delivered to the Rustic Grain workshop near Crestwood, where it is treated for any possible insects. From there, it is scanned with a metaldetector wand for additional nails and other metals, like buckshot, that could have penetrated the wood over time. It is then milled. “We are very careful,” Nummela says. “We want nice, straight, square, flat pieces to make tabletops that are practical so that you get a chance to celebrate the character of the wood every day without necessarily putting up with the flaws. We want to turn all of those flaws and deformations into something that can be enjoyed.” Nummela says all employees who join the Rustic Grain team are thoroughly trained on the balance between exposing new wood for a flat surface and leaving the aged saw marks, all n. while balancing those with the natural woodgrain “We are looking at the character of the wood through a window of its past so that [its] story is told on all levels,” Nummela says. “We have the story we have created in the last maybe month or two, then the saw marks that were made on this wood 100 years ago, then you see the grain of the wood, the annual growth rings that the tree made as it grew 70, 80, 100 years before the barn was even built. There are just these layers of the story.” Nummela says he is consistently asked how to care for Rustic Grain’s tables and assures clients not to be afraid of damaging their piece. “There is such a rich story over maybe 200, sometimes 250 years, of this wood growing from a seedling to being chopped down to being used and reused,” Nummela says. “Why wouldn’t you want it to be a part of your kids banging on it with knives and forks waiting for dinner, things like that? ince its founding in 1903, Levine Hat Co. – whose tagline exhorts, “Be Somebody, Wear a Hat!” – has been making area residents flip their lids. Family patriarch and former Kansas City dry cleaner Benjamin Levine established the downtown St. Louis retailer at a location a handful of blocks east of its present site on Washington Avenue. Over time, the company passed to a second generation of Levines, then a third: Edward (who died in December at the age of 83) and Carole Levine. Their son, Lance Levine, nowadays (forgive the pun) heads the company. Moreover, reflecting his heritage, Lance Levine doesn’t just talk the talk – he walks the walk. “Pretty much every day, I wear about a 2¼-inch-brim fedora,” he says. “I have a bunch of different colors and different materials. Just a gentleman’s fedora, a snap brim, basic. And that’s me – that’s my hat.” The company’s website characterizes it as “the largest retail hat store in the world in terms of floor space and hats displayed,” with thousands of chapeaus stocked in a threestory 30,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse. The website also boasts of having sold more than a million top toppers since the company’s founding. Beyond long-term “bricks” sales, Levine also enjoys a robust “clicks” trade to Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Russia and the United Kingdom. “Over the past 100 or so years, the most popular hat has always been that gentleman’s dress fedora,” Levine says. “Right now, we’ve moved back to a little bit wider-brimmed fedora, so something we sell a lot of would be a 2¼- to a 2½-inch gentleman’s fedora – the type of fedora you’d see [20th-century cinematic icon] Humphrey Bogart wearing. Now, just

a few years ago, the styles were a little bit different, and guys were wearing a little bit shorter brims, what you might call a ‘stingy’ brim.” The company’s website cites a minimum of 16 brands available, ranging from Bailey from Adamstown, Pennsylvania, to Tilley Endurables from Toronto, Ontario. (Also, although Levine generally specializes only in retailing nowadays, its site assures potential customers that “we have all the capabilities to make you a specialty hat the old-world way.”) “We sell a lot of Stetson, and we sell a lot of Dobbs [Fifth Avenue] – and we sell most of all of our own brand, which is Levine,” Levine says. “And we have another, value-priced brand that we call 9th Street, and that’s a throwback to our original location on Ninth Street, over 50 years ago.” Styles cited on Levine’s website include the ever-fashionable fedora and the venerable homburg, the endearing bucket hat and the Parrothead-pleasing Panama, the jaunty derby and the formidable top hat – among many others. “People shouldn’t be scared to wear the right hat for the right occasion,” Levine says. “We have a perfect opera hat, and it’s a top hat. I haven’t been to the opera recently, but if … I’m going to a really dressy, elegant-type thing, there is a specific hat. You’ll either wear a homburg, or you’ll go all-out and wear the top hat. I think back in the old days, people understood that a top hat was much dressier than a fedora.” The website also incorporates a sublime section on hat etiquette, which provides valuable counsel for men and women alike. (“A gentleman should remove his hat as he enters a building,” it advises at one point, “including a restaurant, home, classroom,

acos rank as a favorite in our household. Every once in a while, though, we like to shake up taco night – exactly where this three-bean taco soup comes in. It makes an ideal fall, winter and early-spring alternative to satisfy taco Tuesday (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday …) cravings. It’s also a cinch to assemble: The convenience of canned beans and other simple ingredients ensures a nutritious dinner will hit the table in less than 30 minutes. Also, if you’re cooking for fewer than six diners, pack leftovers to enjoy taco soup for lunch the next day – the spices and flavors will only develop and deepen overnight.

THREE-BEAN TACO SOUP Serves | 6 |  1 15-oz can black beans

puppy was found all alone in a storm drain in East St. Louis. He had severe sarcoptic mange and was missing a lot of his fur. In June of last year, Gateway Pet Guardians rescued the pup and got him started on treatment for mange. He also contracted the deadly parvo disease, but fought it off with the love and diligent care of his foster parents at the time. At the end of the summer, Robyn Gummersheimer was browsing the internet. Going through social media, she kept seeing a big-eared pup pop up, and she was desperate to meet him. She was going through a separation at the time and was dealing with the emotional turmoil of a relationship that had ended poorly, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the German shepherd-terrier mix and his huge ears. “I’m mesmerized by his ears,” she says. “I have two other pointy-eared dogs, and I knew I wanted to go see him.” When she did, the dog was “so playful and clumsy” that she knew she had to take him. Gummersheimer named the pup Titus and brought him home to join her other two dogs, an 11-year-old shiba inu named Cali and a 4-year-old Jack Russell-Chihuahua mix named Dexter. “They didn’t like him at first, since he’s a bundle of energy,” she says. “Dexter is the tiniest and runs the house. Sometimes I’ll catch him and Titus playing, where Titus will drag Dexter around by a rope. Dexter thinks he’s winning, but Titus is being gentle with him.” While her older dogs weren’t so sure of the puppy at first, Gummersheimer was. “He came out of something [difficult] and kept fighting,” Gummersheimer says. “That was one of our instant connections.” Having a puppy hasn’t been an easy task, though. Titus is quite a jumper, and Gummersheimer says he truly doesn’t understand how big he is. “He thinks he’s so small,” she says. “He’ll jump on the couch and try to lay in my lap. I’ve never had a 60-pound lap dog before.”

Titus’ other habits include annoying his adoptive four-legged siblings and stealing socks out of the laundry basket. Although his puppy stage can be a lot to handle, Gummersheimer says Titus

has been a huge blessing since he came into her life. “He yearns for my acknowledgement,” she says. “He truly lets me know he loves me.”

ancer affects not just individuals but whole families. In a world where nearly everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, there are 5 million children in the United States alone who have been affected by a parent’s cancer. The emotional toll this can have on a child in his or her formative years can be great, but one organization is working purposefully to ease the burden. Camp Kesem began 18 years ago at Stanford University to provide a supportive, safe place for kids who have lost a parent to cancer, who have a parent undergoing treatment or whose parent is a cancer survivor. The free weeklong summer camp has grown from humble beginnings to more than 100 chapters in 40 states across the country, with some chapters offering multiple sessions each summer. One such chapter is right here at Saint Louis University (SLU). The local chapter started in 2013 and is operated by a group of SLU volunteers who work year-round to raise money for the organization. Laurel Dusek, a junior political science major at SLU, serves as the chapter’s public relations and marketing coordinator, along with fellow student Justin Parramore. She

got involved with Camp Kesem after working as a camp counselor at home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This will be her second summer helping with the camp itself, and she works with other student volunteers to raise money for Camp Kesem throughout the year. “I love summer camp and how impactful it can be for children, especially if they’re going through a tough time,” Dusek says. This summer, dozens of campers ages 6 to 18, along with student volunteers, will venture to Sunnyhill Adventures Center in Dittmer the first full week in August for swimming, fishing, archery, arts and crafts, other sports and more. The counselors work to ensure the week is a safe, supportive and high-energy adventure for the campers. The days have built-in downtime, a rotating selection of activities and evening all-camp activities like “capture the flag” or talent shows that bring everyone together. Each day at Camp Kesem is different, allowing campers to get a full spectrum of

summer camp experiences. what sets Camp Kesem apart from other summer camps, though, is its built-in support system for the hardships that accompany a child dealing with a parent’s cancer. with a 3-to-1 camper-to-counselor ratio, Camp Kesem ensures that campers get the attention and support they need. Each evening, counselors also facilitate “cabin chats,” where campers can talk about what’s on their minds in a safe place among peers. “we’ll read, tell a story or lead a discussion, depending on the age group,” Dusek says. “I was with the older girls [last summer] and was able to ask deep questions about school and life in general. It’s a chance for everyone to get to know each other on a deeper level.” Once during a week of camp, counselors facilitate a session called “empowerment,” where campers are invited to share their family’s story. It’s a time for campers to discuss what they’re experiencing, their hopes and dreams, and what the camp experience has done for them. “It gives them a sense of comfort knowing the people around them understand what they’re going through,” Dusek says. Although SLU’s chapter of Camp Kesem is fairly new, it’s become popular due to St. Louis’ proximity to prominent hospitals and research centers. This summer, Dusek says the camp plans to take on two dozen more campers than in 2017, for a total of 110 this year. “Last year, we had 86; this year we should have at least 110 at our larger campsite,”

Dusek says. “In 2017, nationally, we served more than 7,300 kids.” Luckily, volunteer growth has mirrored growth in campers, and Dusek says volunteering is becoming popular on campus. “Since St. Louis is such a big place for hospitals and research, there are a lot of patients with families in the area,” she says. “It’s great that we have this organization to support them.” It takes about $1,000 to support each camper, so this year’s fundraising goal is $110,000. t the start of the year, the metro area’s first food truck food court opened in St. Louis’ Tower Grove South neighborhood: Court Louie. Marking a unique collaboration among four members of the St. Louis Food Truck Association – Steak Louie, Farmtruk, Go! Gyro! Go! and Locoz Tacoz – Court Louie was founded by Steak Louie chef-owner Paul Listenberger. The food truck hub fills the 2,200-square-foot space previously occupied by AM Trading Co. and Peculiar Penguin, with 49 seats in its dining room and 20 more on the patio. “We have a countertop, and everyone has their own station and [point of sale] system,” Listenberger says. “Just like in traditional food courts, you go to the vendor you want to go to. It’s nice because you can mix and match.” The ordering and dining areas feature a purple-

and-yellow color scheme along with black to represent the asphalt that the trucks hit regularly. All businesses use the space as a commissary, cooking meals on their respective trucks while running off of the building’s electricity. A standardized plug also enables guest food truck pop-ups. Court Louie’s resident mobile restaurateurs offer their one-of-a-kind specialties on-site, with rotating menus each night. According to Listenberger, Steak Louie makes house-made gourmet cheesesteaks with hand-cut meat; Locoz Tacoz serves madefrom-scratch Mexican street food; Go! Gyro! Go! cooks Greek cuisine; and Farmtruk focuses on fare in the farm-to-table style. As a result, no matter the eclecticism of visitors’ tastes or cravings of the moment, Court Louie can offer a plethora of options before those visitors catch Anything Goes from New Line Theatre. “Everyone is also honing in on different items for

From Farmtruk, meanwhile, they can choose from standard highlights such as the B.L.E., with bacon from Washington, Missouri’s Geisert Farms, lettuce and eggs sunny side up, accompanying basil aïoli and tomato on a brioche. “I just think it’s a cool space,” Listenberger says. “Tower Grove has always been really good to us, and we want to invite everyone in to see how great the neighborhood is.”

‌Story: It’s anchors aweigh as the SS American prepares to depart New York City for England. On board is Wall Street magnate Elisha Whitney, who plans to spend the journey wheeling and dealing, as well as having a bit of fun. He entrusts his aide, Billy Crocker, to take care of business while he’s away, but the young broker instead has love on his mind. Billy has fallen instantly in love with a young woman he saw in a taxi shortly before heading to the American. Seeing her board the ship, Billy stows away to meet her, even though he’s learned the girl, Hope Harcourt, is engaged to marry an Englishman named Sir Evelyn Oakleigh – an arrangement engineered by Hope’s imperious mother, Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt. Also making the voyage are evangelist-turnednightclub singer Reno Sweeney and her backup quartet, the Angels, as well as Moonface Martin, a bumbling gangster known as “Public Enemy No. 13,” and his gal pal, Bonnie Letour. Moonface and Bonnie take a liking to Billy and resolve to help him win Hope’s heart, while Reno sets her sights on the quirky but charming Sir Evelyn. When Billy’s discovered and mistaken for Snake Eyes Johnson – a missing pal of Moonface and Bonnie, who also ranks as Public Enemy No. 1 – he’s lionized for his celebrity status by the American’s passengers and crew alike. When that doesn’t sit well with Hope, Billy identifies himself and promptly is thrown in the brig along with Moonface. It’ll take some doing, but with the help of Reno, Moonface and Bonnie, it’s just a matter of time before “anything goes.” Highlights: In the role of Reno, Sarah Porter sparkles like one of the fabulous gowns she wears to accentuate this rollicking, infectious good time. With a smart, energized supporting cast deftly directed by Scott Miller and Mike Dowdy-Windsor, New Line Theatre blends silly comedy, stylish music and effervescent performances in a winning combination which cleverly utilizes all hands on deck. Other Info: With music and lyrics by the incomparable Cole Porter, Anything Goes first hit Broadway in 1934, featuring a book written by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse with substantial contributions by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. There actually have been four versions of the show, including the 1962, 1987 and 2011 revivals. The 1962 version of Anything Goes – the one followed in New Line’s production – incorporates some tunes written by Porter originally for other shows. No matter. Porter’s tunes are so wonderful and intelligent it’s a joy to hear them at any time and in any musical. The other Porter, Sarah, takes the pivotal role of Reno and completely captures the siren’s vivacity and joie de vivre in her portrayal. In the ’62 version, Reno and Billy are just friends, with the worldly Reno surprisingly setting her sights on the square, but

likable, Sir Evelyn. Porter also uses her excellent voice to entertain the audience, whether duetting with Evan Fornachon as Billy on “You’re the Top,” soloing on “I Get a Kick Out of You” or leading the ensemble on rousing versions of the revival number “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and the title tune. Fornachon makes an irrepressible Billy, full of good nature and better intentions which go awry given Billy’s hapless predicament. A joy to watch as he warbles “You’re the Top” with Porter, Fornachon gets down with the comedy in singing “Friendship” with Porter and Aaron Allen as Moonface or serenading Eileen Engel as the fetching Hope with “It’s De-Lovely” and singing the charming ballad “All Through the Night.” Allen mines the comedy as the amiable if bumbling Moonface, working well opposite Porter and Fornachon, as well as Sarah Gene Dowling as the sexy scamp Bonnie, Moonface’s gal pal with a flavor for agreeable sailors. Dowling leads the troupe with lusty versions of “Heaven Hop” and “Let’s Step Out,” numbers which take advantage of the effective choreography contributed by Michelle Sauer and Sara Rae Womack. Sauer and Womack constitute half of the appealing Angels, who also include Larissa White and Alyssa Wolf, as fine a quartet of tap-dancing lovelies as you’re likely to encounter on the high seas. Ideal as the winsome Hope, Engel has great fun opposite Fornachon’s lovelorn Billy and suffers suitably under the thumb of the browbeating Mrs. Harcourt, played to the overbearing hilt by Kimmie Kidd-Booker in a fine comic performance. Not to be outdone, Zachary Allen Farmer personifies the right-proper heritage of Sir Evelyn while also falling under the sway of the determined Reno. Jeffrey

M. Wright brings home the bombast and confusion of powerbroker Whitney, suitably stumbling about without his spectacles for much of the show. Dominic Dowdy-Windsor, Will Pendergast, Jason Blackburn and Clayton Humburg do well in minor parts. Pianist Nicholas Valdez capably conducts the New Line Band, which features trumpeter Ron Foster on the “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” number, as well as fine contributions by Clancy Newell on percussion, Adam Rugo on guitar and banjo, Jake Stergos on bass and Joel Hackbarth on second keyboard. Positioned at stage right, the lively and entertaining sextet presents Porter’s score without being intrusive. Miller and Mike Dowdy-Windsor keep the pace relatively smooth and move the sizable ensemble effectively enough throughout Rob Lippert’s handsome scenic nautical design, which Lippert lights as well. Colene Fornachon contributes the appealing costumes, Ryan Day adds sound, and Kimi Short offers some amusing props. Cole Porter knew how to write tunes with smart lyrics and snappy music, and New Line Theatre finds the heart in this 1962 version of the good-humored Anything Goes.

Belfast seemingly has replaced past troubles with live music, a new Titanic museum and exquisite cuisine.

e first visited Belfast in Northern Ireland more than 15 years ago, at which time we toured the municipality’s murals with a driver who knew the city’s history – good and bad. Those striking murals stood at the borders of the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods and featured men clutching assault weapons and wearing black balaclavas (also known as ski masks). They functioned as a threat: Stay out of our neighborhood. Today, tours of the murals no longer run, having been superseded by memorial tours. These new tours take an entirely different focus. Replacing images of masked men with weapons are portrayals of men and women killed in the “troubles,” the political and nationalistic conflicts that raged in Northern Ireland in the latter part of the 20th century. The new focus serves to memorialize, not to threaten, and seeks to transform the hatred and prejudice of the past into a memory of those who died in those conflicts, looking to the future. As our guide explained, biases still linger among the older population, and high walls between

neighborhoods still stand. But younger Catholics and Protestants are working together in special programs, led by that younger generation. The way forward for Belfast looks positive. Cranes dominate the skyline, with six hotels being built. Some 2,000 students once housed in the suburbs soon will move into dorms in the city center. Live music of many genres livens the night, every night, all over town. Great cuisine abounds. And as always, the ready Irish wit and verbal skill delight. Without question, the newest big deal is the Titanic Belfast, an attraction devoted to the famous British passenger liner of that name. Although it prompted skepticism at first, the museum beautifully provides the context for the ship’s construction. For example, it outlines how local capabilities, from the making of linen to custom heating, allowed Belfast to produce as noteworthy a vessel as the Titanic. One particularly well-documented display in the museum relates how Catholic workers earned less and enjoyed fewer privileges than the dominant Protestant worker community. And near the end, the museum provides a real sense of drama surrounding the final moments of the great vessel

and the 1,500 or so souls who died when it sank. Although on our first visit to Belfast, we found excellent food, we found even better food some 15 years later. For example, at the wonderfully named Muddlers Club, I ate a sampler lunch of three different tastes, one of which – the one that caught my attention – involved an egg yolk a chef described as “cooked” at 65 degrees Celsius for 41 minutes. Delicious. We supped twice at James St. South because that establishment was so good. Among many other things, it offers crab, partridge, monkfish on the bone and “champ,” the Northern Irish version of mashed potatoes with scallions. We took a day tour with friends who had joined us from St. Louis and elsewhere. The staff at the

Fitzwilliam Hotel arranged a private van and an excellent driver/guide. Our tour started with the Giant’s Causeway, a World Heritage Site and geologic phenomenon where a volcanic eruption millions of years ago pushed some 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns from the earth in a pattern suggesting (at least to the Irish imagination) a walkway for giants. From there, we drove five minutes to the Old Bushmills Distillery, where the famous whiskey has been licensed for more than 400 years. The tour ends in a tasting room and a chance to sample such rare offerings as Bushmills 12-year-old single malt. For lunch, we visited Bushmills Inn, a five-minute drive from the distillery. The chowder tasted excellent, as did the “pheasant beaters nosebag” sandwich, which features ham roasted with honey, two slices of Irish cheddar, pickles, chutney and some salad. Once we’d found sustenance, a short drive took us to the famed pedestrian Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge suspended over seas crashing on rocks below. After whiskey tastings and more drink at Bushmills Inn,

though, no one in our party felt much enthusiasm for a span swaying over gushing waters. Instead, at the suggestion of our expert guide, we visited a nearby lookout to view and photograph the bridge (now incorporating steel cables, despite its historic name). After a stop to photograph the ruins of Dunluce Castle, which dates from the 13th century, it was a drive back to Belfast. I came home with three takeaway points. First, Belfast is looking to the future, past the “troubles.” Second, Northern Ireland shares all the natural beauty of the neighboring Republic of Ireland – one reason it will host professional golf’s 2019 British Open. And finally, Americans have too long overlooked Belfast, which only now is beginning to come into its own.

Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast (Great Victoria Street, fitzwilliamhotelbelfast.com) occupies Belfast’s major street, next door to the Grand Opera House and across the street from the venerable Crown Liquor Saloon and the quintuple Robinsons Bars. We thought the concierge staff was excellent and the breakfast delicious, with rooms both comfortable and welldesigned. Evening chocolates with turndown never go unappreciated, as we also relished small welcome bottles of Bushmills Irish whiskey.

George’s of the Market (St. George’s Market, Oxford Street, georgesbelfast.com) features a chowder with smoked cod, crab, salmon and clams served in a “Belfast bap” (soft roll) – very good and reasonably priced. Also offered is an all-day breakfast, similarly substantial.

WHERE TO IMBIBE The Crown Liquor Saloon (46 Great Victoria St., nicholsonspubs.co.uk/thecrownliquorsaloon), an 1826 Victorian classic, attracts great crowds for good reason: its unique beauty, including old tile, stained glass and woodwork – everyone seemingly wants to visit it. It includes 10 “snugs,” semiprivate high-walled booths with doors. If you can’t snag a snug for your group right away, be patient – or make friends with patrons who already occupy one. (Try offering to buy a round!) The Duke of York (Hill Street and Commercial Court, dukeofyorkbelfast.com) has earned regular recognition for years now as the best Irish whiskey bar in Ulster, with column after column of whiskeys, including a 26-year-old Middleton and a 1949 Tullamore. Those who don’t care for the water of life needn’t worry, though: The venue also offers plenty of ales, porters and other beers for every taste and price, as well as live music seven days (and nights) a week. Covering every inch of the walls and ceiling is drinkers’ and Irish paraphernalia. Berts Jazz Bar at The Merchants Hotel (16 Skipper St., themerchantshotel.com), a beautiful and comfortable bar, features an extensive book of cocktails, new and old, as well as good nibbles and live jazz seven nights a week.

We lunched twice at The Muddlers Club (Warehouse Lane, themuddlersclubbelfast. com) and enjoyed the nouvelle Irish cuisine tremendously. The kitchen pays enormous attention to detail with the simplest of ingredients, to wonderful effect. Incidentally, the restaurant’s name comes from its former history as Peggy Barclay’s Inn, where leading Irish revolutionaries met in secret to further their conspiracy. My bet: The food wasn’t nearly as good then. The Restaurant at Fitzwilliam Hotel (Great Victoria Street, fitzwilliamhotelbelfast.com) features a contemporary space in burgundies and blond wood. Contemporary Irish cuisine includes a pigeon starter and Himalayan saltaged beef fillet, both of which we enjoyed. In the mornings, this space becomes the breakfast venue, and my go-to was smoked salmon and, if I felt really hungry, perfectly soft-poached eggs.

It skillfully showcases the history of the Titanic and the factory that built it, and promotes a sense of real drama and emotion around the last minutes of that doomed ocean liner. Also, this superb museum occupies the precise site where the Titanic was built and first slipped into the water to great acclaim.
