Thriving BLENDED FAMILY HOLIDAYS— IN 3 EASY STEPS by Erica Busillo Adams + Avery Pontell-Schaefer of (step)mom:v

THE HOLIDAYS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME OF OUR FONDEST MEMORIES. They give us moments to look forward to, traditions to relive and to create, favorite meals to prepare, and opportunities to see loved ones near and far. Yet, as so many (step)moms have shared with us, the holiday season can be difficult for blended families (heck, they can be difficult for biological families too!). Every situation and every custody agreement is different– some holidays you’ll have the kids, some you won’t. There’s not always consistency in blended family holidays; consistency that both parents and kids crave. Some (step)moms have revealed that they feel the holi-

days are not their own– that they are subject to the traditions and practices of holidays past, holidays that they were not a part of.

We want you to THRIVE during the holidays, not just survive them. Here are three tips to help you get there:

However, we believe that blended family holidays can be incredibly rewarding, and can provide some of the best opportunities to create new traditions, build family bonds, and encourage continuity for you, your partner, your (step)kids, and maybe even your extended families alike [dream big, (step) moms!].

VERBAL VISUALIZATION If you’re anything like us, you have a lot of clear ideas about what your ideal holiday season looks like. But these ideas will remain simply that– ideas– until you tell your partner about them. It’s a mistake that a lot of couples make– silent expectations

HAVE YOU EVER LOOKED UP AT THE NIGHT SKY & FELT A LITTLE THRILL WHEN YOU SPOTTED THE BIG DIPPER? Perhaps you’ve seen the “first star” of the evening and made a quick wish? Or, if you’re lucky, maybe you’ve been able to see the grand spectacle of the Milky Way stretching across like a thick band of light in the night? As the holidays approach, the nights come earlier so we don’t have to stay up as late to get a glimpse of the stars. During the winter, there also tends to be less moisture trapped in the atmosphere than in the hazy days of summer, which gives us a more clear view of the stars around us. So December is a perfect time to dust off those nighttime observation skills and enjoy the gorgeous view of the local Universe. There are many great celestial gifts for us, to be seen with the naked eye at this time of year. My favorite constellation, Orion, the Hunter, is just one of the jewels of the holiday season’s night sky. You can find Orion by looking for its “belt” of three bright stars in a row, tilting up slightly from the lower left to the upper right. From Orion’s belt, move your eyes up until you see the two bright stars marking his shoulders, and one more above those for his nose or head. Below the belt, is his sword

Besides naked-eye viewing, you can take things a step farther if you happen to get binoculars this holiday season, or if you have time to head to a local observatory for a more professional view. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

During this holiday season, many of us search for special gifts for our friends and loved ones. One enticing option may be the chance to “buy” a star and name it after someone.

Please be aware that only the International Astronomical Union, a non-profit worldwide agency, can officially name objects in space and they do not sell these rights. In other words, the companies that try to do this are scams and the “buy a star” sales pitch is literally just worth the paper it’s printed on. CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF

Lady Project told by The Lady Project Team

SIERRA BARTER

CEO+ CO-FOUNDER

WHY DID YOU START THIS ORGANIZATION? Julie and I started the Lady Project to combat the Old Boys Club networking that we saw happening in Providence. We knew that there were a lot of cool women doing amazing things in Providence but we felt like there was no place for them to get together, connect and chat in an authentic way. When I met Julie, the first thing she said to me was, “you’re my people!” That was our light-bulb moment– we wanted other women in Providence to know their people. From that, the Lady Project was born. DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. What I love the most about Lady Project is that we are for everyone who identifies as a woman– it’s not about your industry, career level, how much you make or what you wear. We want every woman to come to our events as they are. We make sure that there is never a dress code at events or that ticket prices are too high. Accessibility is super important and we want every person who comes to an event or engages with us on social media to feel welcome and accepted, as they are.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE GOALS OF THE ORGANIZATION, + HOW DOES THE ORGANIZATION THESE GOALS? One of our goals is to create a national network of like-minded women. Currently we have 13 active chapters with three more in the works for early 2017. If you are doing business in a new city, or move to a new city, we want our members to know that there is a group already out there for you to do business with or make friends. WHAT WAS THE VISION IN THE BEGINNING + WHAT IS THE VISION NOW? HOW HAS IT GROWN OR CHANGED OVER TIME? By SO MUCH! Initially, our mission statement said “awesome young women” and Julie and I decided to change because we didn’t want to limit anyone from joining Lady Project. We also never intended on it being “The Lady Project” or going to other cities– when we started, we were just going to be in Providence. When we became a non profit, I remember saying we’ll never do an appeal or have a gala… well, both have happened because as a non profit you have to fundraise and try to be as sustainable as possible. Additionally, from an operations standpoint, a lot has changed and we have become a lot more efficient and better with our time and choosing the right tools. When people first joined, they joined via EVENTBRITE and then emailed me their logos– oye! WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS SO FAR? Each of our Summits just keep getting better and better– from an events standpoint, they run smoother every year and our speakers are just incredible. The Summit is always huge. Being recognized by great press like Glamour,

Entrepreneur and CNN is pretty cool, too. This year’s gala was amazing and unlike anything we have ever done. Our membership has also grown almost double each year– we have such incredible members and the fact we are almost to 2,000 nationwide is amazing. Every day I am inspired by our members and everything they are accomplishing– I am so proud that Lady Project has helped them along in their journey. The biggest accomplishment though is our team– from our core team here in Providence , where most members have been on for a few years, to our incredible City Managers and their teams… we could not ask for better people to keep this organization strong and moving. To have an all volunteer team of ten for five years is an incredible accomplishment and something I am very, very proud of. NAME WHAT CRAYON COLOR YOU'D BE: Yellow! TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee with soy or almond milk. STYLE ICON? Blair Waldorf + Jenna Lyons LADY CRUSH? Amy Poehler

upon us, we all roll up our sleeves and dig in until the work is done. I also love our new tradition of starting and ending our team meetings with a dirty joke.

KATE HUOT

SPECIAL PROJECTS MANAGER

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. Before The Lady Project was a thing, I was definitely one of those girls who wasn’t friends with other girls because I assumed I wouldn’t fit in. Now I have more gal pals than I can even count. The Lady Project has done a really great job at cultivating a collaborative atmosphere, free from drama, and full of encouragement. It is so important that women build each other up, rather than tear each other down, and work together and advocate for each other. One of my favorite things about The Lady Project is that our members come from all different industries and walks of life, but we’re all here working together and helping each other along our own paths. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? Being apart of the team has been an amazing experience. I love being “behind the scenes” for some of our larger events, like our annual Summit, then seeing our members reactions. I love that I get to work with amazing students and interns and watch them blossom into capable team mates. Our team is varied in experience and age, but when a deadline is

WHY DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN LADY PROJECT, AND WHAT HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT LOOKED LIKE OVER TIME? Although I was out of town for our very first event, I have been involved with The Lady Project from the beginning. My roll has changed as the organization has, from helping with invitation graphics in the beginning, to sourcing out and designing our merchandise, to planning local events, and creating forms and systems for our national chapters to use. WHAT EMOJI DESCRIBES YOU BEST? The poop one... FAVORITE SEASON? You can't beat Summer and Autumn in New England.

EMILY GREAGORI

EVENT MANAGER

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. My passion for the Lady Project mission comes in the form of our last key word– Showcase. I love showing off the

strength of this organization. Showing how far the branches of the Lady Project can reach; from within Providence to the United States. I love the opportunity for our members to showcase themselves, showing everyone how much of a badass they are at their trade, showcasing what they have to offer other members and allowing themselves to be available to their fellow members. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT ARE THE BEST RESULTS THAT LADY PROJECT HAS ACHIEVED THUS FAR? HOW HAS LADY PROJECT IMPROVED OVER TIME? It’s really interesting to see how far Lady Project has grown in 5 years. I remember the first event I volunteered for was the Lady Project Summit in 2013 at Anchor and Firehouse 13. Even then, we all knew this organization was something important. You could feel the energy radiating all around from these amazingly talented women sharing their expertise. There, in the close quarters of Firehouse 13 we all gathered to hear Sierra and Julie speak about Lady Project and why we, women from all walks of life needed an organization like this. From that event I knew I had to be involved. From that first Lady Project Summit, not only has the organization grown but the Summit has grown too. Bringing women together for this annual conference from all over the United States is one of the best results I’ve seen and have had the opportunity to be involved with. Every week we see the small scale of various events being hosted in Providence, that's happening all over the US within other LP city groups. I think it is a huge testament to the organization how much of an impact the Summit has on our members that they see value in traveling from all corners of the US to attend this conference. Every year we strive to bring a more

diverse set of speakers and workshops to the Summit to make it more impactful to the attendees. From where the first Lady Project Summit started, and where we are now at the Vets hosting over 300 amazing women– that’s huge for me. WHAT EMOJI BEST DESCRIBES YOU? The monkey covering his eyes! I use it all the time! I COLLECT... Impractical shoes, I have them– I love them– but I will never wear them out *ouch*

WHY DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN LADY PROJECT, AND WHAT HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT LOOKED LIKE OVER TIME? I attended LP’s second ever event– a brunch. Since then, I became a member, and eventually a team member as the Director of Development. IF THE LADY PROJECT ORGANIZATION WERE TO BE ON THE COVER OF YOUR FAVORITE PUBLICATION IN FIVE YEARS, WHAT WOULD THE STORY BE ABOUT? Do you think it’d be too far fetched if Sierra Barter was on the cover of the New York Times in 5 years for her groundbreaking organization going full national? NAME WHAT CRAYON COLOR YOU'D BE: Cerulean Blue WHAT EMOJI DESCRIBES YOU THE BEST? The smirking one... of course

CORINNE BARBER

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. I love the connections that Lady Project makes between its mission and other organizations, between women, between businesses– it’s pretty amazing. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? When I was a kid, I used to look up at my (very large) father, stomp my foot and proudly say, “I’m the boss of it.” He never discouraged that attitude and today, I’ve found a whole group of ladies who, in one way or another, did the same thing. I found my tribe!

MIKEY DAVIS

MEMBER + DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. The Lady Project provides a space for women to seek out unconditional sup-

port by building a strong community for collaboration. My excitement around our mission stems from the impact that I see we are having in the cities we are a part of, in the partnerships we are creating, and in the people we bring together. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? All of the strong, intelligent, and ambitious women I have the privilege of working with. AS A PART OF THE TEAM WHAT DO YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME ON? WHAT MAKES YOU THRIVE IN YOUR POSITION? Most of my time is spent working in membership, developing and sustaining systems that will help us grow. I think this is a unique position because I get to do a lot of behind-the-scenes work with our membership, which is such a core component to who we are as an organization. I thrive when I know our members are getting the most out of their membership and are able to make some positive connections. IF THIS ORGANIZATION WERE TO BE ON THE COVER OF YOUR FAVORITE NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE IN FIVE YEARS, WHAT WOULD THE STORY BE ABOUT? The Lady Project featured on the cover of GQ, “Top 3 Women Run Organizations That Are Kicking Ass Right Now.” (With tasteful photoshoot, sans sexism). NAME WHAT CRAYON COLOR YOU'D BE: Antique Brass or Wild Blue Yonder STYLE ICON? Tim Gunn

mean we've launched 15 incredible chapters already and I know there are more in the queue!

SARAH DILLONAIRE

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. The Lady Project inspires the women in a community to get together instead of tearing each other down, to help each other work towards bigger goals they have for themselves and their careers or self-made businesses, and show off their awesome-ness in a healthy environment filled with their biggest cheerleaders. The community that the Lady Project creates is something that I think is very special and something that every woman should experience– it's truly unlike any other group I've ever experienced. For all of those reasons (and much much more) I love working hard every day for the mission of this organization– to bring a healthy community of belonging to all women everywhere. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? There are so many amazing, talented people on this team and they make working towards these big dreams we have as a team easy. They all work their butts off to get us to our next goal. Without each and every one of them, we wouldn't be able to be growing at the pace we are– I

HOW DID YOU BECOME APART OF THE LADY PROJECT? I was a student at Johnson & Wales in the School of Technology; and I became a part of the school's AIGA design chapter. We lost some key board members because of graduation and so my class stepped up to take over as best we could. Sierra (who works social media for JWU) came to an event we held and asked me to come to her office sometime to give us advice for the group moving forward and to talk about what more we could be doing on social media to help get us more attendance. Little did I know that this meeting had a secret (but very good!) agenda– we began chatting and Sierra gave me the advice... then she asked me to become PVD Lady Project's first intern– and I said yes! After my internship was over (which I started early because I was so excited to help!) I stayed on board to help with PVD Lady Project more. Soon after I graduated and was asked to stay on as Creative Director– I said yes (again) and haven't looked back since! AS A PART OF THE TEAM WHAT DO YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME ON AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE "SUCCESS" FOR YOUR POSITION? As Creative Director, there are always projects coming up; I handle things from new chapter branding, event invite designs, print materials for the national and local chapters, digital collateral, and the bi-annual guides. They way that I define success for my position is when I finish branding for a chapter or the Summit and I get that email from Sierra or the city manager saying they love it. It's also seeing the Lady Project Manifesto I de-

signed and the summer and holidy guides being shared and loved by our members, because they are the reason those things are created, to showcase them. Seeing the team members and chapter members enjoy the work that I design and create, makes all the hectic deadlines worth it. BLOOM OF CHOICE? White Peonies and Lavender WHAT EMOJI DESCRIBES YOU THE BEST? The smiley emoji with his little hands up! Makes me laugh and I use it all the time!

editorials for the past five guides and I also served as Communications Director and then Editor-in-chief of The Lady Project Blog.

BRITTANNY TAYLOR

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, LP BLOG

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE "SUCCESS" FOR YOUR POSITION? Success for me is making the blog a destination website where people will want to go to read the stories and ideas from women all across the country. I COLLECT... Crystals BLOOM OF CHOICE? Yellow Roses

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. I’ve made most of my current friendships through The Lady Project. I’ve also gotten so many work opportunities through The Lady Project. I’ve met so many inspiring ladies throughout my three years with this organization. I feel like all my experiences exemplifies The Lady Project mission of connecting, inspiring, and showcasing. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? My favorite thing is the connections I’ve made with other team members. I can text them at any time and they know I am always there for them. WHY DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN LADY PROJECT, AND WHAT HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT LOOKED LIKE OVER TIME? Honestly, I got involved because Sierra was desperate for a photographer for an event. I stuck around because I loved the community that Sierra and The Lady Project team were building in Providence. This holiday guide marks my third year with The Lady Project. I started as PVD’s photographer and shot the

AS A PART OF THE TEAM WHAT DO YOU SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME ON? WHAT MAKES YOU THRIVE IN YOUR POSITION? I spend a lot of my time with the Lady Project reading blog posts and community comments from women sharing their knowledge and connecting with other members. Reading these stories from women willing to help and guide other women is particularly inspiring and really makes me thrive in my position! IF THIS ORGANIZATION WERE TO BE ON THE COVER OF YOUR FAVORITE NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE IN FIVE YEARS, WHAT WOULD THE STORY BE ABOUT? We would be featured in a story about how The Lady Project has created several tight groups of women working together in cities across the country to support women owned business and friendships. WHAT EMOJI DESCRIBES YOU THE BEST? The Smiling Full Moon Emoji.

BETHANY CALIARO

SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. Bringing women together within our community to achieve personal and career goals gets me fired up. When we work together, we showcase our strengths as women. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? Meeting bright, driven women who care about their community and their peers.

I COLLECT... Ceramic Fruit Dishes.

CATHRINE NELSON

COMMUNITY MANAGER

WHY DID YOU JOIN THIS ORGANIZATION? I started off as an intern for the Lady Project in my senior year at Johnson & Wales University. I fell in love with the mission, team & members. I decided to settle in and make Providence, Rhode Island my post college home to remain involved. I have now been a member of the Lady Project for over 2 years and I look forward to continue to grow with Lady Project. DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. I feel passionate for our mission because it essentially One time I think on lead to the path I am now. I was always in a sense a feminist and someone who believed in supporting women. When I became a part of the Lady Project I realized the true value in developing a trusting and supportive community where others are able to be vulnerable, honest and comfortable to grow. I hope with all my heart this community will only grow and help other women across the United States and even the world. The Lady Project Staff + Team support me wholeheartedly and they are the ones who will help us

achieve more goals. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SUCCESS SO FAR? I feel there are many moments that feel like successes when it comes to Lady Project for me professionally and personally. One time I think of the most is when I was an intern and was working my first Summit in 2015. I believe it may have been the day before the Summit but Sierra asked me to be the moderator for the panels for the whole day. I believe there were 4 or 5 panels throughout that Summit and I was able to speak with writers, mothers, designers, scientists, etc. That was a time in my life where I was not the most confident in myself but I said yes and got up on that stage at some points in front of over 100 people to lead the conversation with the panels. Being a moderator that day was a confidence boost like I have never had. That was the moment where I realized I am capable of more than I even know. WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR JOB? As a part of the communications team, I feel my job is important because it impacts our chapters and how Lady Project is viewed from non-members as well. All of our team members are volunteers. We all work our full time jobs and then do our best to keep Lady Project running smoothly. My position has grown and evolved as I have in our organization and currently I see the most important aspect of my job as developing systems in place now that will help us maintain and grow. I do a lot of reading and research to try and make myself a stronger professional

and team member. IF THIS ORGANIZATION WERE TO BE ON THE COVER OF YOUR FAVORITE PUBLICATION IN FIVE YEARS, WHAT WOULD THE STORY BE ABOUT? I would want the headline to read “Ten years of getting shit done. The Lady Project coming to a community near you.” I would want it to showcase Sierra and her lady-squad of team members who try their hardest to grow, develop and support the Lady Project. NAME WHAT CRAYON COLOR YOU’D BE? Macaroni and Cheese TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee– black with two sugars. The stronger the better but I prefer medium-blonde beans over a dark roast. LADY CRUSH? Currently, America Ferrera. I’M LUSTING AFTER THIS TREND… Makeup trends are something I avidly follow. Even if I am not actually wearing the looks I love following them. Many who know to me refer to my trademark cat eye eyeliner look. Simple. Chic. and totally me.

JULIE SYGIEL

CO-FOUNDER + ADVISOR

DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. I believe magic happens when women come together to support each other. The moment I met Sierra, I knew that we would be friends and that we would also spend many hours talking about our businesses. We talked about marketing campaigns, pricing strategies, and all the feelings associated with running your own business. It was refreshing and inspiring. We wanted this feeling to spread to every ambitious woman in Providence, and then later, around the world. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? I love brainstorming new ideas with Sierra and figuring out how I can be a source of support and inspiration. There are so many growth opportunities for the Lady Project and I enjoy talking through the options to figure out what’s right for right now. WHY DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN LADY PROJECT, AND WHAT HAS YOUR INVOLVEMENT LOOKED LIKE OVER TIME? Sierra and I cofounded the PVD Lady

Project in 2012 and ran it together on top of our businesses for a year and a half. We realized after our first event when 50+ women showed up, that we were on to something special and pledged to continue to grow the community. It was exhilarating and exhausting. In June 2013 I moved to New York City and became an advisor. It has been a pleasure to watch Sierra lead the expansion to cities across the United States and to provide input, connections, and support along the way. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I’m inspired by Sierra’s enthusiasm and willingness to say “yes” to almost everything. WHAT EMOJI DESCRIBES YOU THE BEST? Definitely the hair flip.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A LP TEAM MEMBER? DESCRIBE YOUR PASSION FOR OUR MISSION. In the past I have felt more competition than collaboration with female coworkers, and I think it often led to a negative work environment as well as an inferior product. With the Lady Project, I feel a positivity that helps me move forward with my goals, in the company of other fantastic women.

Winter Recipe QUICK & EASY MASON JAR

by Shayla O’Keefe

It is hard to narrow down the one reason that makes the holidays so great, but we can agree that one of those things is definitely the food– indulge your sweet tooth with these (super easy) MASON JAR PEPPERMINT CHEESECAKES!

is definitely the PSL of the winter months following Thanksgiving. And what is a better way to eat peppermint than in a cheesecake? Thanks to some recipes I found from both PopSugar Food and multiple recipe bloggers, I have created my own version of cheesecake in a jar, just for the holiday season. PEPPERMINT

HOLIDAY DESSERT IDEA: • Place some in the bottom of the

PEPPERMINT CHEESECAKE IN A MASON JAR

INGREDIENTS CRUST 10 graham crackers 4 tbsp. melted butter 2 tbsp. brown sugar 2 tbsp. sugar (or less if you use Stevia or a sugar substitute) CHEESECAKE 8 oz. cream cheese (reduced fat) 4 tbsp. sugar (or about 1 and 1 /2 tbsp. of Stevia) 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract 8 oz. whipped cream/Cool Whip (reduced fat) Red food coloring Crushed candy canes

The best part of this recipe? You can use up the rest of the ingredients for other holiday recipes! GRAHAM CRACKERS? Used for toppings on pie, making pie crust, or use in other cookie recipes. SUGAR? Obviously every- DIRECTIONS thing during the holiday season FOR THE CRUST needs some extra sugar. EVERYTHING ELSE? Those get used up in • Crush the graham crackers into this delicious recipe. tiny crumbs. NOW, LET’S GET COOKING!

• Pour melted butter over the crumbs. Add brown and white sugar– mix together.

mason jars/cups.

• Reserve the rest. FOR THE FILLING • Mix together the softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract. • Fold in Cool Whip. Separate the mixture into two bowls. Add red food coloring drops to one bow of the cheesecake mixture. Crush the peppermints/candy canes and add them to the second bowl (the non-red mixture) and mix the peppermint pieces in. • Pipe or spoon cheesecake filling into jars (first one spoonful of the red, then a spoonful of the white and peppermint pieces). • Add a crumb layer. Repeat until the jars or cups are filling to the top. • Store in the refrigerator for at least 1.5 hours but longer is better!

EAT & ENJOY! • Add whipped cream topping. Sprinkle extra peppermint/candy cane pieces on top.

5 EASY WAYS TO

FitStyle YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON by Shana Schneider, Founder of ZoeFit

IT REALLY STARTS IN NOVEMBER and then keeps going on through December, you know what I’m talking about… the celebrations. The celebrations that all seem to center around sitting and grazing for hours on end. I’m not complaining as the holiday season is my favorite time of year, but it can take a toll on our exercise routines and healthy habits. My mom showed me a funny dish towel the other day that said “You know what I got for Christmas? Fat! I got fat!” Haha, right?! Not exactly the present you want to accept. While there isn’t a free shipping return tag that comes along with that one, we can work to keep up our fitness habits during the holidays.

Here are a few fitstyle tips for staying on track: CLEAR OFF YOUR KITCHEN COUNTER My kitchen counters become covered with all kinds of baked goods and my absolute favorite See’s candies. The best thing to do is clear off those counters by putting sweets, chips, dips anything that’s edible away so it’s out of sight. If you want something that could be an easy to grab snack, fill a glass bowl or platter with some fresh fruit, but otherwise, have those kitchen counters look like wide open spaces.

FILL YOUR MUG WITH WATER. The holiday season is, at least in my book, synonymous with hot chocolate, egg nog lattes and all kinds of other yummy, but high calorie beverages. It’s time to swap those out for some crystal clear goodness– water. While you may be carrying around that mug, make sure it’s filled with nature’s best zero calorie, and oh so good for you H2O. I like to follow a oneto-one rule – for every mug of cocoa, take a water break in between. START A NEW HOLIDAY MOVIE TRADITION. Holiday movie marathons kick in right after Thanksgiving. With everything from the old classics like It’s a Wonderful Life to the modern classics like Elf (and who doesn’t like saying Francisco?), there are so many to watch. While you may have enjoyed these holiday classics while lounging on the couch, start a new holiday tradition by watching them in fitstyle. Lose the guilt about spending hours in front of the TV by adding in some exercises and enjoy every minute (or at least forgetting that you’re even exercising!) For a fitness tip that applies to all Christmas movies ever, do 10 squats every time someone appears on screen wearing a Santa hat!

DECORATE WITH FITNESS CUES Putting up all the holiday decorations can be a good workout in and of itself, but once you have those unpacked, don’t stop there. Go and collect all your fitness tools (resistance bands, hand weights, yoga mat, fitness balls, etc.) Put those tools in places that are front and center just like the decorations. Having these tools in your line of sight make it easier and more likely for you to actually use them! And thanks to online shopping, you can event get things like hand weights in a color that goes with your décor! GIVE YOURSELF 5-MINUTES OF SILENCE While I love caroling and hearing Christmas music, there is a season for everything. For just 5-minutes each day, let there be silence. Turn off the TV, turn off the radio, turn off the computer, put down your phone. You may need to go into your bathroom or close yourself in a room to get away from it all. But take the time to allow yourself to reboot and think about how “all is calm and all is bright!” For more tips on how to fitstyle your life, visit ZOEFIT.COM.

A BIT LOVELY'S

Winter Style by Nancy Gandrud of A Bit Lovely

RUBY WOO LIPSTICK BY MAC, $17 This is the most perfect shade of wear-all-night red lipstick I have found. It lasts through laughing and sipping cocktails– it’s affordable and gorgeous. What girl doesn’t need a great red lip from time to time and especially during the holidays! Swipe it on and it can instantly liven up any outfit.

BIJOU NAIL VENEER BY JINSOON, $18 I love a gold party nail or a reverse French manicure with the tips being festive in glitter. Nails are such an art form now why not add some subtle sparkle for the holidays?

COPPER CHEMISTRY CARAFE, $48 If you want to add some jazz to your water vase for the holidays this is a beautiful way to make your dinner table feel special and a useful tool. You can also fill it with water and leave it in your guestroom if you have overnight visitors. It’s a little detail that feels intentional and beautiful.

VOLUSPA CANDLES IN AMBRE LUMIERE OR SUEDE BLANC, $9-29 For me something that signals the holidays is low lighting. I achieve this with lots of candles. I think the soft light signals something romantic and relaxing, especially if you can sit in the glow of your home and see pretty white snow outside in the winter. My favorite way to do this is to buy several candles with beautiful scents and place them around the house; bathrooms, tables, kitchen counter, coffee table. The scent is intoxicating and if you don’t have a fireplace you can pretend with a little fire lit glow.

ODETTE HALTER LACE DRESS BY ALEXIS, $620 Black is a staple but it’s fun to have a party dress in a pretty colour during the holidays too. I love the texture and romance of lace. You can wear it with simple black heels and delicate jewelry and it is gorgeous. I prefer a colour that can be used at other times through out the year as well.

RED ROSES OR PEONIES IN BRASS VASES I love getting flowers from local florists. For me that is FIORI FLOWERS IN BOULDER . Price varies $25 and up. I like to place single variety flowers in little brass vases around the house; side tables, bedside tables, mantles, in the kitchen. My favorite flowers are roses and peonies in deep burgundy. It feels luxurious, fragrant and beautiful.

BLACK FUR VEST BY LOVE TOKEN, $159 You can wear a practical all black pant and blouse with pretty shoes and this vest and feel stylish but stay warm. I often gravitate towards black in winter but it can get boring and this vest adds texture and warmth. I prefer a simple style without any zippers or buttons and a hidden clasp inside. You’ll be surprised how often you throw on this warm, versatile and stylish piece all winter long; with jeans, a little black dress, black denim. It’s so versatile and a nice upgrade from the puffer vests we are all used to seeing in the winter. It can go casual or elevated so it is versatile and will earn its keep in your closet.

CRANBERRIES AT TRADER JOE'S, $1.99 An easy way to make holiday cinnamon rolls healthier and prettier is to add cranberries. It’s easy! To make add raw cranberries to boiled water with sugar and some citrus. I like to use orange juice to add another layer of flavor and a clean scent to the air. Trim your Christmas morning cinnamon rolls with the fresh berry sauce and everyone will think the cinnamon rolls are extra special. The berries add colour and extra vitamin C so you can feel good about indulging.

LAN JAENICKE CASHMERE COAT, $1,195 Now this is a real investment piece or a wish list item. The reason I am including such a high-ticket item is because the 100% cashmere coat is great for sensitive skin since it has no wool. The cashmere is perfectly breathable in shoulder seasons like fall and spring and incredibly warm and stylish during the holidays and winter. This is an item you will have for years and years to come and you won’t need any other fancy coats. My favorite style is the peplum or the classic Stamford II, which is universally flattering.

LULU FROST RADIANT EARRINGS, $225 Combined with a great red lipstick these earrings will take you anywhere fancy you need to go this holiday season. Lulu Frost specializes in old Hollywood glamour with a modern edge and I absolutely love these earrings. Any great tip is that they can be worn to weddings and other black tie events down the line so they are a great investment piece that is season-less.

MY FAMILY HAS A CHRISTMAS EVE TRADITION THAT HAS LASTED OVER FOUR DECADES. Every year, over 30 of us pile into my grandmother’s house to celebrate. Growing up the excitement of the holidays was always something I anticipated months before, not because of the gifts but because I knew how much fun I was going to have in that house. What never occurred to me however, was how much behind the scenes planning goes into a holiday bash like that one. Who picked who for the secret Santa gifts, what aunt is bringing what dish, what time is everyone showing up? As much I’d love to say just show up and hope for the best, there is a level of organization that does help around the holidays. Once you have pinpointed those aspects of the holiday season that you feel are most important, and bring you the most joy, follow these tips to staying organized. HOW TO KEEP IT SIMPLE + ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON WHEN

PART TWO

BY CAROLE ANN PENNEY

EVERY YEAR, THE CHRISTMAS COMMERCIALS SEEM TO START EARLIER AND EARLIER... The anticipation, excitement, and pressure build and build so that by the time December comes around, I am in a frenzy about doing ALL OF THE THINGS and making a holiday season that is super fun, super meaningful, super cozy, and super festive for me and everyone around me. Last year, I felt so pressured by the time that December started that I was already exhausted and feeling like a failure– I wanted to make Christmas magical in my new home; I wanted my baby’s first Christmas to be filled with new traditions; I wanted to be a great wife and find perfect gifts that really say something to my husband about how I feel; I wanted to spend time with family; and I wanted to celebrate how much my friends and co-workers mean to me. I felt pulled in so many directions by expectations from myself and from others, but started to see pretty clearly that there were too many things on the list– it just wasn’t all possible. I TURNED TO THE LADY PROJECT FACEBOOK GROUP (LIKE YOU), AND ASKED: How do you ladies cope with feeling inundated with messages about all of the stuff that you need to buy and decorate and experience and stay grounded during this very busy month?

I GOT SOME GREAT ADVICE: Say no a lot. Unplug. Give yourself permission to get takeout and have a messy house. Buy a case of wine and lots of chocolate and check gifts off the list. Send New Year’s cards. ONE COMMENT IN PARTICULAR, THOUGH, CUT THROUGH IT ALL FOR ME: Think about the things that bring you happiness and focus on those only. Figure out what brings you joy and eliminate the excess. I remembered that my husband and I used this strategy back when we were planning our wedding. That was another time when we had a lot of decisions to make, a lot of components that are “supposed” to be a part of the merriment, and the pressure of making time with family meaningful. We kept it manageable by stepping back from the process to make a list of the three things that were most important to us. Those were the things to which we devoted the bulk of our time, energy, budget, and love. The other things weren’t as important, and we gave ourselves permission to let go of them. It didn’t mean that they didn’t happen, but they either got delegated or we were fine whether they happened or not. We really wanted to focus on those three things that were most meaningful to us.

I started this holiday season by stepping back, making a cup of tea, and creating my list of things that bring me joy over the holidays: decorating my tree with my family, making spritz cookies with my daughter because that was always a tradition for my mother and me, and spending meaningful time with family. I’m giving myself permission to let go of the rest. Suddenly, it all seems manageable and I’m looking forward to the holidays. One BIG thing that didn’t make the list (and honestly surprised me): gifts. To think about releasing myself from that pressure of buying something meaningful and personalized for every single person– when really it turns out that that’s not important to me– is incredibly freeing. I picked out a few things and invested less time and money than I had in the past. Instead of rushing around to find the perfect gift, I’ll spend that time putting on music and decorating our tree as a family, and enjoying it every day. I encourage you to make a list of your top three things that are important to you in the holiday season, and make sure that your time, energy, budget, and love are given to those things. That way, you’ll come out of the season feeling fulfilled. Choose the things you love, and let go of the rest.
