s the days chill, the leaves turn bright reds and yellows, and everyone seems to excited to refresh their closets with new sweaters. Yet, many people dread this time of year. Frenetic holiday displays, commercials, and social media streams seem to command that we seize every moment and make it memorable, beautiful, and joyous. If you are one of the many who suffer from winter blues or seasonal depression, this time of year instead can bring dread, fear, shame, and isolation.

Our bodies were never meant to be indoors the way modern lifestyles often demand. From our offices to school libraries to our homes, we are exposed to low light for more hours of the day than anyone just a century ago ever was. Bright sunlight signals our brain to produce a host of hormones and chemicals that keep our emotions stable and our outlook bright. When winter sets in, many of us experience low level to full-blown depression; a need to isolate and an incredible energy drain.

It’s a very isolating feeling as it pairs with this compelling sense that you must be enjoying every minute of these celebrated months. These low feelings are often clinical conditions that can dramatically interfere with emotional health before, during and after the holidays.

It used to be thought that those living in the northern hemisphere were more at risk of developing SAD, but recent studies have actually found geography not to be a significant risk factor.

At its worst, seasonal mood changes can be severe enough to qualify as major depression with the above symptoms plus: • AT LEAST TWO WEEKS OF SAD MOOD • HOPELESSNESS OR HELPLESSNESS • SLEEP DISRUPTION (TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE) • APPETITE CHANGES (TOO HUNGRY OR NOT EATING) • THOUGHTS OF NOT WANTING TO BE HERE, BE ALIVE OR THOUGHTS TO COMMIT SUICIDE

Winter blues can range from mild to a diagnosable condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Symptoms include: • LOW ENERGY • AN INCREASED NEED FOR SLEEP AND NAPS

The good news!

Seasonal blues or seasonal affective disorder are treatable and often without medication. There are several great products that can help you achieve a more stable and happy mood.

One of the first things that can be done is to purchase a Light Alarm Clock that wakes you slowly, mimicking the natural effect of a sunrise. They bring light into your room and as they awaken you, your body becomes used to the internal is body clock we typically ignore. It’s a natural and pleasant way to awaken. Often these alarms are programmable to go off with sound after a designated length of time as a backup in case you are a very heavy sleeper.

Another powerful tool is called a Light Therapy Box. These are lamps that can be as small as an iPad or large as a briefcase.

They must have special, powerful light bulbs in them that reach 10,000 lux. I typically recommend my patients purchase one around September or October (but any time in winter is fine if you are experiencing symptoms). They should be

used in the early morning, every morning, and are set up at an angle to your face – do not look directly at the light! It will give you a headache or eye strain. The light needs to be about 15-30 centimeters from your eyes and people typically start with using it for 10 minutes every morning, moving up to 30 minutes in the morning. You can be reviewing your email, eating breakfast or really doing anything during this time as long as the light is hitting your peripheral vision at about 45 degrees. Talk with your doctor if you are on medication as some can make your eyes more sensitive to light.

Seasonal blues can be mild but they can also be very severe.

The brain is an organ and while we can do things to treat our lungs and hearts well, we tend to have less shame about going to a doctor if those organs are not performing well and we need intervention. Somehow, the brain and its complexity have been lost in this. It can also need a medical intervention such as medication or therapy to get it healthy again. Just as you wouldn’t feel guilty for having asthma, seeking help for a brain that is depressed is nothing shameful and is the best way to care for our bodies.

TAKE DAILY WALKS FOR SUNLIGHT Daily walks for up to 30 minutes can get you some of the light you need. Even walks on a cloudy day will help your mood.

Aerobic exercise, once you are up for it, can also lift your mood and push away those blues.

KEEP UP THE VEGGIES, FRUITS, AND PROTEIN! If you are the type to give in to those strong carbohydrate cravings, shifting your diet to a lean protein, vegetable, and fruit menu will avoid these insulin spikes and crashes that come with the white bread and sweets that are so tempting during the winter.

ENJOY COZY WINTER NIGHTS WITH GOOD COMPANY The Danish term hygge gained popularity outside of Denmark last year encompassing a way of life that embraces the long, dark, winters common in the Nordic region. Hygge involves radically accepting the winter -getting into soft slippers, flannel blankets, drinking hot tea ,and listening to gentle music. The critical factor however, is that hygge is meant to be community based; as cozy celebrations of the dark cold days and nights are best shared with friends and family. They are intentional, mindful and close. Being with others, personal touch, and conversation can raise our ‘love hormone’ oxytocin that in turn can bring the happy, complete feelings we often crave during the winter and in the holidays. So in addition to working on the practical parts of this plan, talk with your partner, friends or family about hygge celebration nights.

Hidden Holiday Challenges

hile the holiday season is commercially represented as the most wonderful time of the year, for many people, that simply isn’t the reality. There are a plethora of reasons why holidays can be stressful, dreaded, or even traumatic; fortunately, some of these experiences are commonly validated, but other folks’ challenges fly under the radar.

such as volunteering together the day of or before a holiday; organizing a neighborhood book, toy, or clothing drive; or adopting a family. Encourage your children or young family members to discuss holiday experiences rather than gifts, so kids don’t feel isolated returning from a holiday break with fewer new possessions than their classmates.

THEY’RE STRUGGLING WITH FERTILITY

Here are some ways to recognize when a loved one or community member may be struggling, and concrete steps to make their holiday season a little bit brighter.

THEY’RE RECENTLY SOBER The holidays are a difficult time to maintain sobriety, especially if it is a recent lifestyle change. If you’re hosting a holiday party, consider setting up a hot chocolate station, and pour yourself a mug! Offering non-alcoholic eggnog is great too, but putting it right next to the spiked bowl could lead to accidental confusion or unnecessary temptation.

If your family doesn’t look the way you pictured it might or dreamed it would, the holidays can be a particularly difficult time. If you are a parent, be consider how you discuss your family traditions with friends, especially if you know they had a recent miscarriage or are trying to get pregnant. Sharing pictures and funny memories may seem harmless, but it could unintentionally draw painful attention to what someone has lost or is missing.

THEY’RE COMING OUT, IN TRANSITION, OR QUESTIONING THEIR GENDER IDENTITY OR SEXUALITY

THEY’VE RECENTLY MOVED OR IMMIGRATED Celebrating the holidays in a new culture or city, away from family from the first time, can be a very lonely experience.

Consider inviting anyone who can’t be with their family to join your holiday celebration. Folks who have lost their homes due to financial strain, water or fire damage, or are spending their first holiday outside of their childhood home may also greatly appreciate an invitation. To make outside guests feel welcome, you can think of inclusive topics ahead of time, avoid inside jokes, and perhaps invite more than one extra guest so they have someone to sit next to comfortably.

THEY’RE FINANCIALLY INSECURE It’s well-known that the holidays are an expensive time, and not everyone receives a holiday bonus or has disposable income to spare. Be mindful of gift giving; set clear expectations ahead of time on a strict spending limit, or if gifts should only be handmade. Otherwise, your kind gesture may make someone feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about their inability to reciprocate.

Try to plan activities that are free or inexpensive, such as potluck meals or a snowy walk, rather than asking people to add extra expenses during an already costly time. You can set up a unique and meaningful tradition of giving in your family,

Coming out, especially to family, is a huge decision and can lead to really tense situations if some members of the holiday group are unaware. Before the gathering, ask the individual which pronouns to use around others and how to refer to their significant other. Otherwise, while your intention may be to respect their identity, you could accidentally out them to unknowing guests.

If you don’t know of anyone in your holiday group who is in this position, that doesn’t mean they’re not there. If you hear someone make a comment at a dinner that could be harmful to someone’s identity, say “hey, that’s not cool.” It can be as simple as that, and make all the difference to someone who could otherwise be left feeling rejected.

THEY’RE GRIEVING A RECENT LOSS It’s a very visceral experience to be grieving a family member during the holidays: suddenly, there is an empty seat at the table, and someone’s role during holiday traditions goes unfilled. In addition, folks who have recently been divorced, separated, broken up, or had a loved one become incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized must also navigate the complex emotions of loss during a time they may have anticipated spending together.

You can help by asking each individual to ask what they need in these difficult situations; some people may want distraction, and others might feel best with silent companionship. Simple gestures such as a handmade card, running errands, or cleaning up around the house may go a long way to remind them they’re not alone.

THEY LEFT THEIR RELIGIOUS GROUP Many people’s childhood holiday memories are tied to religious tradition, and if a person has recently left a religious group, by choice or not, they may be wondering how to form new traditions independent of faith. You can make them feel welcome by inviting them for a secular activity, such as cookie decorating or looking at light displays, and it may become part of their new annual traditions.

THEY’RE EXPERIENCING A MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGE Navigating a mental health challenge such as social anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or eating disorder is difficult any time of the year, but holiday meals and gatherings may draw extra attention or put pressure on individuals to “perform.”

Try to be aware of these tendencies, and go out of your way to make people more comfortable; small gestures such as leading the way on introductions, encouraging everyone to wash their hands before dinner, and refraining from commenting on what anyone is eating, may go a long way in helping someone feel less isolated.

Note: You don’t need to have a “diagnosable” mental health challenge to go to therapy; anyone can benefit from having a space of their own to navigate life’s ups and downs. Here is a super easy, minimal ingredient recipe for Butterscotch Cookie Bars because leaving plain, old cookies out for Santa was so last year. Cookie bars are where it’s at now! Hope you enjoy this buttery, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth recipe.

COOKIE BAR INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Crush graham crackers into fine crumbs (I put

1 1/2 CUPS CRUSHED) • 1/2 CUP SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK

• 2 CUPS FLOUR • 1 CUP BUTTER SOFTENED

• 1/2 CUP BROWN SUGAR • 4 OZ. BUTTERSCOTCH CHIPS 5.

GLAZE (OPTIONAL) 6.

• 1 1/2 TABLESPOONS OF BUTTERSCOTCH JELLO MIX

• 2 TSP WATER • 1 -2 CUPS POWDERED SUGAR

GLAZE (OPTIONAL) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Combine butterscotch Jello mix and water and stir

until resolved 2. Add powdered sugar a few spoonfuls at a time until it reaches a syrup-like consistency (or load in the powdered sugar if you want it more frosting like!)

5 Self-Honoring Holiday Rituals for Busy Women

From making gift lists to running in and out of stores, the holidays have a way of keeping us busy and on the go. Before you know it, you’re booked with so many commitments, things to do and places to be. All of a sudden, there’s not a moment left to really enjoy what’s supposed to be the “most wonderful time of the year”.

be as productive as possible during the holidays. Are you a great baker? Consider honoring your gift by offering baked gifts instead of scouring the stores for the perfect gifts. Are you great at helping people with financial advice? How about getting your dear ones the best financial advice books out there! Do what makes your soul smile, and find your stride!

I would know. As a busy working mom, I would run myself ragged trying to fit an impossible list of to-do’s into the last few weeks of the year. At the end of the day, the “most wonderful time of the year” would turn into the most miserable time of the year.

SAY NO!

Here are 5 self-honoring holiday rituals for busy women, to remind us to enjoy this time and celebrate ourselves in the process: TAKE SOME TIME OUT! During such a busy time as the holidays, it’s easy to forget about ourselves. Take some time out every now and then to breathe and keep your head above the “holiday” waters! This may mean getting out of the stores and the gift lists to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa alone. Or hiding out in a nearby café to have some “me” time.

FIND PEACE IN THE IMPERFECT! It’s never going to be perfect, any of it! From finding the perfect gifts, cooking the perfect meal, or having the perfect wrapping paper, perfection is overrated! Instead, find peace in the imperfect, in the unfinished and in the almost done! It’s ok to be ok with things being imperfect, it’s also a way of honoring all your efforts, just as they are!

REWARD YOURSELF! Stop for a minute and appreciate everything you’re managing to do, in between work, family, business and everything else.

Take some time to reward yourself, whether it’s with a nice pair of shoes, an extra hour to read or a day at the spa!

FIND YOUR SWEET SPOT! Instead of forcing yourself to do so much during the holidays, find your sweet spot! What do you do best? What is it that you’re naturally good at and where do you have talent? Use those areas that come naturally to you, and leverage them to
