Key Drivers in the Early Development & Changes of the Boise Bench Discovery of Gold 1860

Mining & Railroads 1880s

Gold discoveries in the valleys of Northernand Central Idaho was a major draw in ther early 1860s, and attracted temporary settlement.

Gold wasn’t the only thing that early miners found throughout parts of Idaho. Silver, phosphate, lead, zinc, and copper, were also mined in vast amounts. Though the first Union Pacific Passenger train didn’t reach the Boise area unitl 1925, the railroad extended to central parts of Idaho in the late 1800s was another contributing factor to settlement of the Boise area.

vCanals & Agriculture Early 1900s

Gowen Air Field - 1940 & Sergeant City

Townships

1938 2015 Early Townships, that were square, layed a foundation for the major thorouhfares that are in place today.

In 1940 the Boise municipal airport was established as a military air filed. This change brought thousands of men, women, and children to the Boise valley. An off-base housing develpment, that became know as sergeant city (shown above) was needed to house military personnell. The complex was meant to create a family-oriented community that included ammenities that a modern family would need, and became instrumental in getting utilities out to the bench area.

Building canals to move water was critical for irrigating crops and livability in the dry deserts of Idaho. It also created many jobs, and the canals, which cut through undeveloped land created a constraint, and added another dimension to the landscape.

Vista Village 1949

Concentrated growth and automobile congestion of downtown Boise led to the idea to create more space to live with a residential community outside of town. Vista Village was the first planned residential and shopping district in Idaho. It also is considered to be one of the first ‘strip malls’ in the United States. The residential area behind Vista Village was planned around walkablility and access to schools and recreation. Parking was also a big consideration with the growing number of cars.

What Will Drive Future Change on the Bench ? Refugee Population-They need a place to live and feel like they are a part of the community. They need to be able to integrate with the existing population. Refugees need jobs, and their children will need a place to attend school. Walkability-Cars fueled by gasoline are not the thing of the future. With gas prices rising, more and more people are taking alternative forms of transportation. It will be important to develop new communities, (and change some existing ones), that will be conducive to walking and biking, as well as the automobile. Recreation-People love to get outdoors, have fun, exercise, and relax. Fuel tanks-If the fuel tanks are eventually relocated it would most likely mean some significant changes to many residents of the Bench area, and would be a big driver of change. Deteriorating Irrigation Systems-Many of the old irrigation systems from when the bench area was first developed are still in place, but are starting to deteriorate. There is a need to effectively and efficiently find an alternative irrigation system, which could also be a driver of change. Photos taken from Boiseartsandhistory.org

This is a poor connection between residential homes and commercial spaces. It is an intimating area for pedestrians to participate in. Each use is also very separate from another, not allowing for a good flow of space.

This is a good residential neighborhood on either side of this road however, this road makes it difficult for there to be a connection from one side of the street to the other.

This is the 4 lanes on Franklin Blvd. This main corridor of the bench has very poor pedestrian access. There are no bike paths and minimal cross walks. Ultimately a poor connection residential neighborhoods.

The residential area around the gas farm is doing a good job of accommodating this unusual and inconvenient circumstance. The homes are well kept and aside from the large trucks it is a quiet neighbor and street.

This neighbor has been existent since 1971 and could definitely use a face lift. It is a mixed use area of office space and single family homes. Most of the homes are extremely run down and don’t have much of a curb appeal.

This is a very friendly residential connection between homes and Borah High school. There are traffic calming precautions and well kept homes. Over all a successful residential area.
