Create opportunities within the communities to foster diversity: Refugees arriving to the bench area often struggle with the transition to their new lives. The barriers with language and culture can be large obstacles to overcome, and some feel unwelcome. The recently established Boise International Market provides a good example of what we are hoping can happen in much of the Bench. The Market offers retail shops, restaurants, and fun events that are rich in cultural diversity. It is a successful destination, that allows the refugees to express themselves in a positive way, as well as those residents who lack cultural experience to learn about other ways of life. Boise international market & garden Farmers market/flea market Neighborhood block party Promote and enable interaction: The varied background and culture of the refugee population brings many benefits to the community. Their talents, culture, and skills, are valuable to improving the area where they live. If meshed appropriately with the native residents, the central bench can evolve to become a coveted place to live with energetic, engaging, and sustainable neighborhoods. More shared spaces (opportunities for interaction) Farmers market/flea market Community events Adult/children rec leagues Boise international market & garden More community gardens Make inviting corridors that people want to use Improve connections Provide for a variety of types of living: Users: -Non-refugee residents -Current refugees -incoming refugees -young families -millennials -dogs -kids -bicycle commuters

VISION STATEMENT The Boise Bench is a historic and humble area with a diverse and growing population. It provides a unique opportunity to enhance and revitalize the communities that are found there. Located to the west and slightly south of Boise Downtown, it is a prime location for people to live outside of the city, yet still be close enough to connect to and access the downtown area. We intend to plant seeds of opportunity throughout the neighborhoods that, over time, will flourish into a unified community. We envision a place that preserves cultural diversity while enabling friendly interaction between neighbors, and creates places where everyone can be happy with their way of life.
