GTM don’t have the answers Bulletin preparing to take them to court

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality have failed to supply the Bulletin with answers to nine simple questions after more than a month. This despite the acting municipal manager (MM), Ms Conny Mametja, having instructed her communications department’s staff, including the head of the department, Mr Thulani Twala, to forward the requested information to the Bulletin. Word in the GTM’s corridors has it that the MM is being boicotted by certain elements because she is “too strict and disciplined”. Bulletin sent a lawyer’s letter to the MM on Tuesday, notifying that we will file an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act if the

GTM does not respond withing three days (today being the third day). We will spend money on legal action in fighting the GTM on this is issue, in the interest of the community — and to fight the arrogant and uncalled for lack of transparency demonstrated by officials of the GTM. • We will report further on this matter next week, when we will also publish the nine questions. We want to put on record that we will not allow the community to be kept in the dark and we will not accept that ratepayers are being ignored. If Tzaneen’s residents are complacent and if the opposition parties represented in the GTM’s council can’t fight the lack of transparency, we will take the fight to the GTM. And we will not stop anything short of the highest authorities in the land.

Premier to address province Speaking from the podium in the Legislature today when he delivers his third State of the Province address, premier Cassel Mathale is expected to give feedback to the people of Limpopo on the most important issues affecting their lives. Political party representatives in the audience would especially be interested in news on matters of service delivery and reaching of past targets for, among others,

housing, health care, education and provision of water, while ruling party members are likely to applaud the achievements of Mathale’s administration. Mathale is expected to give an update on his first two State of the Province addresses while at the same time aligning his speech to the most recent State of the Nation address of President Zuma. He is anticipated of spending time on the cre-

ation of jobs in the province. At the same time economic development and foreign investment would most probably rank high on the list of topics to be touched on. At the same time he would probably give a wrap-up of the 2010 World Cup hosting, elaborate on the Lephalale development, refer to the improved matric pass rate, focus on safety and security etcetera.

Of selfs die Besmeerraadvoorsitter. Bekommerde Ouer, dink Vlieg, is Bekommerde Ma.

Vlieg dink jy is verveeld!

Dit is mos Lunchtime with Riaan.

Moenie dat LEFT: Area chairman Len Honeyborne inducted Mr Bruce Mogg as chairman of Round Table Tzaneen for 2011/12 at their recent meeting in their clubhouse. RIGHT: Here are most of the 28 members who attended the recent meeting of Round Table Tzaneen. Various events for this year were discussed during the meeting and the members have big plans for 2011.

Tzaneen’s Round Tablers have interesting plans The Round Table Tzaneen held their second meeting for the year and 28 members attended. Attendees included two “tablers” from Tzaneen, six “pipe liners” from Tzaneen, two previous area-chairmen and eighteen “tablers” from the Bushveld Area.

At the meeting, the area chairman, Mr Len Honeyborne, inducted Mr Bruce Mogg as the Chairman for 2011/12. Projects like the Fresh Water Kayak Fishing competition were also discussed. The fishing competition will be the first of its kind and will take place on the Tzaneen

Dam on 26 March. The next meeting of Round Table will be held at their clubhouse in Circle Drive on 1 March at 19:00 and the first social will be at Ebenezer Dam on 27 February. For more information: Bruce on 082 824 4291 or Dale on 082 820 6029.

Oompie Francois Aucamp.

Enjoy (and use) our new shopping guide There is little hope, if any, that South Africa will escape a new meltdown in the economy. Economists warn that we will see a steep hike in the price of food and other essential commodities, sooner rather than later. Shopping already challenges John Citizen to be watchful for price increases and crawling inflation. The Bulletin, acknowledged for its undisputable loyalty to its readers, today announce two new services for the benefit of our readers. The first is our Price watch (on this page), which will feature weekly and will offer an index of food prices in the major chain supermarkets. This will enable readers to see how prices differ and how and when prices

climb or drop. The second new service entails a weekly tip on how to interpret or understand terminology used for products that we may often use — but don’t necessarily feel comfortable with, because it is technical to some extend. This new column is today to be found on page 2 — in the shape of an oil can and with an easy to understand explanation of the information on cans with motor oil. It is sponsored by the distributor of the oil. Watch it and get wiser. Also watch the price index and get more knowledgeable. We trust that our readers will enjoy the new service and we promise to extend our service to readers even further. Watch us!

Tea extract group are going ahead It is clear that Limpopo Green Estate has the full cooperation of the Limpopo agricultural government to go ahead with their project to produce tea extracts on Magoebaskloof’s Sapekoe land. Agriculture MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba confirmed this after interacting with the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (GTEDA) and Mr Roger Duffield of Limpopo Green Estate. Duffield said in an interview the extract produced a phytonutrient catechin which has been identified as an antiviral that block the entry pathways of the HIV-1 virus to the CD4 lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell responsible for coordinating the functions of the immune system to fight infection. Research has been going on since 2003, which proved that phytonutrients identified in

plants have many health benefits including antioxidant and anti viral activities. This extends to citrus fruits, banana, guava, tomato and green tea, where an extensive library of research and information has been established. “Specific phytonutrients assist the body in fighting off diseases which include various cancers, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases together with other viral infections, including the HIV virus. The problem is poor absorption in humans and animals. The catechins from tea can be absorbed in the body efficiently.” He said apart from the giant leap to be taken against HIV1, the project will create a huge amount of jobs for the people of Magoebaskloof. The extract will assist the body’s natural defence systems in fighting viruses and diseases. It slows down the development of HIV, but it will not prevent it. ‘n Ontluikende skoonDuffield said they heid van Tzaneen het have not yet engaged beoordelaars beïndruk tydens die Miss the Medicine ConValentine-skoonheids- trol Center, but they kompetisie in Polok- envisage utilizing all wane.

Salt and Light Mat. 5: 13-16

Rice is as bland as one can get, now many may not eat rice, but I do and if someone forgets to put salt in, the rice seems tasteless. I am unfortunately, very fond of salt and have often been warned by my doctor to be more careful with it as it can affect my health. But here I am at 62 and according to my latest check-up as fit as a fiddle. So who says salt is wrong? Salt plays an important role in ones life as it adds flavour to food. In Mathew’s gospel Jesus says “ You are the salt of the earth.” So Christ is using the use of salt as an example of adding flavour to something. Thus if we are compared to salt, then we must be worthwhile in this world.

Ovation! Sandra de Roubaix, Box 676, Hoedspruit, writes: I would like to write about a few matters! 1. On behalf of everyone living in our district I would like to thank KPMM for the excellent work done on the R527. Firstly the work done is of such a high standard and shows that there are still people who are proud of their work. The road is beautifully resurfaced and must rank as one of the best in the province, if not the country! Secondly the management of the traffic flow was done almost painlessly. Each time I drive to town from the Blyde there is progress. I know that much work was done at night.

vour to life. Christ further says “If the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” It is useless. Now if we lose our faith and continue to deny Christ, we too become worthless. In other words, if we continue to sin. Being the “salt of the earth” can also mean we are Christ’s disciples and are considered by Christ as an integral part of His kingdom. So it is up to us to at all times endeavour to live up to Christ’s example, and if we do sin we must repent and ask forgiveness, which Christ readily gives us. Let us all try to add flavour to this world by being what Christ wants us to be. God Bless This company deserves a standing ovation! 2. It’s the traffic police again and the Blyde Complex! On Friday they were trapping a short distance from the baobab on the steep hill. The problem is that I am sure that the gradient does not allow for legal trapping. Can someone determine this? Then they were parked opposite the complex, yet were trapping to both sides. From what I gather they may only trap on the side they are parked. If this is so and they were trapping towards the river, they were doing so illegally. If they were trapping towards the baobab and the gradient is too steep to allow for trapping, this would also be illegal. Could you please clear up this matter for us? On Friday morning we were leaving Blyde Complex when one of their vehicles, upon spotting their comrades, just stopped in front of us on the blind rise, put on the ‘magic flashers’ and blocked the traffic. It was a very dangerous thing to do as people have been killed at that very spot! Anyone swerving out for these cretins could be killed right there. This illegal trapping really needs to be nipped. • We will try and get comment from the authori-

Amended traffic laws scrapped The amended traffic law that would have seen speeding driver’s driving licences suspended as from 1 February is no longer effective and the original regulations are back in place. This was confirmed by Roads & Transport spokesperson, Mr Callies Matlala. Once enforced, the amended regulations would have, amongst others, seen to the suspension of the driving licences of motorists convicted of driving more than 30 km/h over the speed limit in urban areas and more than 40 km/h over the speed limit outside urban areas. Other changes included: Cheating during tests for a learners’ or drivers’ licence would have become an offence; new vehicles which were registered after 1 August 2010 would have had to have number plates fitted with pop rivets or screws and not two-sided tape; anyone who received a driving licence for a heavy motor vehicle after 1 February 2011 would no longer have been allowed to drive a light motor vehicle using the same licence (there would have had to have been a separate light motor vehicle licence); there would have been prescribed forms for road accident reports; all municipal police officers would have

been regarded as traffic officers without having to have dual appointments; and all minibus and minibus vehicles that transport paying passengers would have had to have been fitted with an expensive piece of hi-tech equipment – a directional stability control device – which minimises the risk of losing control of the vehicle when braking suddenly. The department was also considering issuing a “general learners licence” which would allow a person to apply for a second category of licence without having to go through the process of getting a second learners. The amendment pertaining to breathalysers that may be used has also been scrapped for now. The change to vehicle registration fees has also been put on hold. Matlala said the department is now consulting further on the matter. “The proposed amendments, although not yet enforced, as well as the consultation processes, have been welcomed by MEC Pinky Kekana. She says any new legislation that will assist in reducing the number of accidents on our public roads is good news for all road users,” Matlala concluded.

Marula Festival thrives for national appeal

The MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Pitsi Moloto, says the annual Marula Festival in Phalaborwa should not only be about drinking Marula beer, but also to stimulate tourism and make the festival a national brand. Speaking at the launch of the sixth Marula Festival at Phalaborwa he cited that it is time for the festival to take its rightful place as a national event. “In order to obtain a national appeal we will have to think out of the box and provide uniquely Limpopo products which have the potential to attract all South Africans. Besides the tourism treasures we have, LimLiN News/Observer popo boasts cultural diversity like no other.

We will tap our cultural diversity and grow the Marula Festival as an uniquely Limpopo brand,” Moloto said. The festival will be officially opened on Thursday next week. The department will host the Cuisine Ala Marula cooking competition aimed at developing special dishes out of Marula fruit. The annual Golf Challenge is expected to take place at Hans Merensky Golf Estate on Friday. Later on there will be an open-air concert which will feature different artists. Tickets for the festival can be bought at Shoprite/Checkers at R80 for adults and R20 for children. LiN News/Observer

In a bid to counter the ruthless onslaught of criminals making use of poorly controlled air space, air movement over the most northern parts of Limpopo will be temporarily restricted in the coming week. First Tshivenda film recounts first Tshivenda novel Ancestral customs contrasting with the reality of modernity, the emerald green abundance of the Thohoyandou landscape and pulsating African drumbeats of the Tshikona dance created the scene for the first Tshivenda feature film adapted from the first Tshivhenda novel ever published. The film titled Elelwani is the result of the book by the same name and the work of Venda author Titus Maumela, who used the backdrop of Lake Fundudzi, Pipidi Falls and the Sacred Forest in the Thohoyandou area as setting for a timeless story written back in the Fifties. Decades later a team of creative minds from Gauteng and the Cape trekked to the north of the province in a quest to capture that narrative against an authentic backdrop. Research for the project by Shadowy Meadows Productions in Johannesburg took three years before principal photography could start in January this year. The crew wrapped up last Sunday and the film is envisaged to be completed by around November. It is a production for which R3,2 million was initially budgeted, but in the end would cost more to produce due to factors like natural phenomena arising from the floods. While their previous visits were uneventful nothing could, however, prepare them for the physical challenges presented by partial floods in the area at a time when shooting was supposed to commence. The crew knew very little what they were entering into. They had to fight the terrain and surrender to cultural and language differences. Making the film was a huge spiritual journey and somewhat of a pilgrimage for the film crew.

The film features Florence Masebe in the lead role of Elelwani and the cast includes homeboy Aishifa Shabba Muleya who plays the romantic lead, Vusi Kunene who is King Thovele, Mutodi Neshehe and Sammy Moeti, while members of the local community were also incorporated through their participation in, among others, the Tshikona dance. It is the story of 24-year-old graduate who is promised to a Venda prince, despite her intention to study in the US as a Fulbright scholar with her true love. Realising the impact on her destitute and culturally aware family, she eventually gives in for respect for the customs of her ancestors. Through her intelligence and beauty she secures the trust and confidence of the prince, who also learns of her aspirations to study further and her love for her prince. In a brilliantly crafted plan that taps into the traditional beliefs of the community and their fears, she escapes the customary marriage after soulful self-discovery. “It is the story about a woman’s courageous spirit to challenge the patriarchy of her community and to follow her heart to realise her dreams. The film is regarded as offering important insight into Venda culture, reflecting the myths, legends and taboos of not just the beliefs but the challenge of incorporating contemporary South African aspirations with

Robbers ambush Mews Beaunice Machitela Residents of the Heritage Mews security complex in Tzaneen were ambushed by three armed men on Saturday evening. It is believed the men followed a resident through the open gate, to get access to the complex. They reportedly found the residents (two men and a woman) sitting socially on their patio, and demanded money. The men allegedly tied up the two men and got away with a black/grey Audi A3, four cellular telephones, a laptop

computer and a remote control to the complex’s gate. Mr Elijah Mdluli from Flora Park (owner of the stolen car) reported to the police that he had been visiting his friends, when the incident took place. Mdluli’s car was later found in Aqua Park. One of the residents in the complex told us that they now felt rather insecure, since the criminals had the remote to the security complex with them. This means they could come in again at any time. A police investigation is ongoing.

Climate change may shrivel forestry and agriculture

A newly published handbook on climate change and its effects paints a gloomy picture for South Africa’s forestry sector. A report titled Climate Change Handbook for North-Eastern South Africa, published by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, warns that some areas may no longer be suitable for commercial forestry due to a projected increase in rainfall and temperatures. AgriSA and Forestry SA, which represent large-scale farmers and timber growers in South Africa, say they have not reached a consolidated position on global warming and the effects it will have on the future of South Africa’s agricultural and forestry sectors. Koos van Zyl of AgriSA says the body will discuss the matter and may reach a view in March. According to www.southafrica.co.za, forestry plantations cover about 1.3 million hectares of South Africa’s land surface. The forestry sector, which employs close to 170 000 people mainly in rural parts of

Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, contributes more than R16 billion to the South African economy yearly. But the sector looks set for tough times ahead if projections by the Climate Change Handbook for North-Eastern South Africa are anything to go by. The handbook states that: • Given projected increases in temperature and changes in rainfall, some areas may no longer be suitable for commercial forestry; • Climate change is likely to exacerbate existing declines in river run-off due to water use by commercial plantations, agriculture, and urban and industrial land use. The report also warns that the degradation of South Africa’s natural agricultural capital may be exacerbated by climate change. It also warns that projected increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall timing, amount and frequency, have critical implications for the full range of agricultural systems in South Africa. “Emerging agriculture is likely to be particularly adversely affected, due to, in many cases, lower adaptive capacity,” it says. The agricultural sector is also likely to feel the direct and indirect impacts of projected climatic changes in a number of ways: • Crop productivity may decrease for even small increases in temperature; • Increased temperatures and resulting evaporation are likely to increase irrigation Te huur demands in a country where existing water Modjadjiskloof/Duiwelskloof supply and quality difficulties already proAvailable 1st March vide stress to the irrigated agriculture sector; 2011. while Charming garden flat, 1 • Existing water supply and water quality bedroom, sitting room, challenges already stress irrigated agriculture. kitchen/ dining room, Predicted climate change impacts on water bathroom, lock up supply and quality will add to these stresses, parking, small private patio with braai. Jaco finishes on podium Off-road motorcycle and quad competitors younger than 17 years had to work hard to score points at the RORMC Junior National event, the opening round of the 2011 Junior National Offroad Championship. Competitors were tested to their limits in the Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) area and had to endure a tough route and hot weather conditions over the weekend. The Senior Quad Class is as competitive as ever and the 2010 runner-up Tinus Bredenkamp opened his onslaught with a comfortable win after a troublefree run. But it is the rider from Tzaneen, Jaco Moller, who made his intentions clear by achieving his first podium finish. His new sponsor,

PS Storm Racing, is very proud. With the first points now on the scoreboard and a few weeks before the Rover Junior National event on 2 April in Port Elizabeth, the young off-road rider can focus on his fitness and riding skills.

Plasies se toptien is oorgehaal

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)

Drink more fluids. Hydration is important when you’re on a fitness plan, but drinking plenty of water has particular benefits for your midsection. It helps keep your stomach full so you don’t overeat and it helps flush out excess sodium to prevent belly bloating. Eating more potassium-rich foods, such as tomatoes and bananas, will also help in this area.

Plain H2O can’t be beaten, but you can also switch it up with flavoured waters, iced tea and anything else you like to drink that isn’t full of sweeteners. How much do you need? The old rule of eight glasses a day is a good start, but everyone is different. Drink more if you’re exercising or when it’s hot out and less if you’re running to the bathroom every 5 minutes.

The Ebenezer Mile is a month away The twelfth Ebenezer Mile will be held on Sunday 20 March and as usual it will be a big day for participants of the mile as well as the 3000 m swim. Last year the race was delayed by mist and most of the swimmers remained for a long while in the cold conditions and made their swim when the mist lifted. Once more they earned the admiration for their dedication and endurance, making the day a great success.

There will be many prizes in different categories, courtesy of our many generous sponsors and food and refreshments will be on sale. Entries can be done online at www.entrytime. com as well as on 19 March at the venue, which is again the yacht club at Ebenezer. Info is also available on www.swimmersguide. co.za or from Jack Holloway on 083 659 1227, Robin Gardener 083 447 6789 and Adi Rech 082 454 5434.
