Vlieg reik na die sterre, maar ruik iets aan ‘n planeet!

Die skoukantoor sit hande in die hare, want dringende korrespondensie moet uitgestuur word. Hul telekommunikasie is beperk tot ‘n selfoon. Die nommer is 082 941 4136. Tzaneen Swaarvoertuie is ook aangewese op selfoondiens. Telkom het glo laat weet dat daar nie genoeg geld in die begroting is om die lyne te vervang nie. Die lyne na twaalf besighede is gesteel, maar Telkom kan net een lyn – dié van die skoukantoor – vervang. Wanneer dit gedoen sal word, is nie bekend nie.

Vlieg praat met die volk, en krap waar dit jeuk! ONDER: Inwoners van Florapark in Tzaneen was die afgelope naweek erg omgekrap oor ‘n straat wat glo met die toestemming van die munisipale verkeershoof, mnr Malatji, gesluit is, om ‘n tent vir ‘n partytjie daar op te slaan. Ons het Malatji nie om kommentaar genader nie, omdat hy die standpunt huldig dat hy niks aan die koerant hoef te verduidelik nie. Na die beste van ons wete mag ‘n straat egter nie lukraak en sonder behoorlike kennisgewing en vooraf oorlegpleging vir prettighede gesluit word nie. Soos wat dit reeds alombekend is, is Vlieg eintlik iemand van min woorde. Hy sit mos maar eerder eenkant in sy stilligheid en luister, as om ‘n mening oor alles en nog wat uit te spreek. So luister Vlieg maar hoe kerm en kla ‘n ieder en elk alewig oor diens en dienslewering. Die algemene opsomming van sulke klaagliedere is mos maar altyd dat “diens in hierdie dorp nie bestaan nie”! Vlieg kyk maar altyd eers wie die klaer of klaagster is, voordat hy hom te veel aan sulke treurmares steur. Want elke storie het mos maar sy twee kante. Nou nie dat Vlieg nie self al ‘n bloutjie of twee geloop het nie, wat hom laat dink het dat diens eerder ‘n vierletterwoord moes gewees het. Net verlede week moes Vlieg weer die wrede uitwerking van diens, of eerder gebrek daaraan, met sy eie twee oë aanskou. En dit was nie ‘n mooi gesig nie. Vlieg is inderhaas deur een van sy vriende ontbied om dringend ‘n sterk pot tee te kom maak. Hierdie goeie vriend van hom moes gelawe

Toe dit lyk of hy tot sy sinne kom en vertel dat die mechanic gesê het hulle het die fout met die ratkas in die asbak gekry, toe ruik Vlieg eers weer ‘n slag aan die tee om seker te maak! Nou sien Vlieg NASA het ‘n satelliet in ‘n wentelbaan om Mercurius gesit, en hoop om baie te leer oor dié planeet. As Vlieg so na sy vriende luister, gaan NASA baie gou agterkom dat daar niks aangaan nie!

Family gets a new house

Beaunice Machitela A family that barely had a roof over their heads enjoyed their dreams come true when they received a newly built ánd furnished house. Ms Lucy Maake from GaMogoboya in Tlhabine Village, 33 kilometres outside Tzaneen, had been living in a two room mud structure with her four adult children and four grandchildren. She is unemployed and lives off small jobs she does for fellow villagers. She was in no position to build a house for here family. The provincial department of local government and housing in partnership with the SABC through the “Celebrity Build a House” campaign built the six roomed house and also furnished it. The handover drew a massive crowd who witnessed the joyous event. Since its inception the Celebrity Build a House initiative has built more than thirty houses in the province.

• It’s election time and scoring political points is important

It is claimed that the party was held to launch the nation-wide corporate movement among emergent farmers. However, these farmers failed over years to get any financial assistance from government. The event was held for 3 500 guests in large marquee tents by the department’s Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) on a state

farm near the Tours dam, occupied by fifteen struggling farmers. It took three bulldozers two days to level the terrain for the bash. It was attended by an impressive group of VIP’s, such as the deputy minister of the Dti (Ms Elizabeth Thebeta), the mayor of the Greater Mopani District Municipality (Mr Joseph Matlou), the MEC for agriculture in Limpopo (Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba), the mayor of the GTM (Mr OJ Mushwana) and several other prominent politicians. Dana and Mark arrived on March 6 for a jam packed programme, including TV interviews and meetings (with amongst others Evita Bezuidenhout). “Everything is free and open here. I love being as close as possible to nature and I enjoy the quietness. Having the ani-

mals roam freely seems unnatural to us though. In Belgium you have to go to a zoo to see these animals,” says Dana. “South Africa feels like a second home to me and I love coming to visit. The climate is wonderful and you are very lucky to have so much open space. I believe people should spend more time in nature.” When it comes to South African cuisine Dana enjoys a braai, “because it is such good meat”. “South Africa has a mix of things that make me comfortable here, especially the people. Once they have accepted you, they treat you as one of them. I also enjoy the African time and that’s fine with me, while I am here. Observers at the launch, however, saw it as a pre-election stunt, hijacking the success of the efforts achieved by people in the private sector. They fear the downfall of the Tours farmers within months if financial assistance from the government doesn’t come soon. All the equipment on the farm are paid for through private loans, but a huge amount in production debt is still outstanding. At this stage their main source of income is the contract with Peppadew International. They also consider a variety of other cash crops and bananas, provided that state assistance turn up in the near future. We could not get hold of any of the senior ANC politicians in the area for comment before going to print.

Two killed for allegedly being witches Beaunice Machitela Two women from Bokgaga Village outside Tzaneen were brutally killed on Wednesday. Firstly the 26 year-old Cynthia Lemaho was allegedly dragged from her house and then stoned to death by a mob of people. Her lifeless body was then dragged back into her house and the house was set alight. Her children aged two and twelve fled and escaped unharmed.

The group then went to 81 yearold Mapula Motopela’s house, dragged her out and also stoned her to death. Her house was also set alight. The police arrested 32 suspects, four of them who are believed to be the masterminds of the murders. The suspects are currently undergoing questioning and profiling and will appear before the Naphuno Magistrate Court today.

Budding young artist @ work Sue Ettmayr Born and bred in Haenertsburg, twenty year-old Donny van Wyk speaks about his all consuming love for art. He discovered art at the age of fifteen and now lives breathes and tastes art and has a burning desire to share his talent. From Haenertsburg Primary School van Wyk went to Merensky, followed by a two-year stint at Pro Arte in Pretoria and then back to Merensky for the last two years. Allan Adams of the Haenertsburg Art Shop supplies him with all his and his pupils’ art needs. He gives private lessons and also teaches at Merensky High. His youngest pupil is fourteen and the oldest is 68. The groups range from thirteen to seven aspiring artists. Van Wyk’s favourite theme is figures and portraits. He finds the human form challenging, as every person is different with different proportions and skin tones. He’s a realist and likes to see fine detail. He mixes realism with impressionism, as he likes to exaggerate a feature or a focal point. Van Wyk shows two of his favourite art pieces in the photo. The one is an oil of the mystical Serala Mountains (Wolkberg). The

other is a poignant charcoal of a child called Simon. When Sapekoe closed down, Simon (then only 5) was abandoned by his parents. Van Wyk captured Simon’s insecurity and fear three years later. He said, “Haenertsburg is my inspiration and in portraits I like looking at expressions and capturing a certain point of emotion.”

Magistrate Rambau is still trying to reduce his bail The controversy surrounding senior regional magistrate Ronnie Rambau continues. This follows yet another attempt by him to have his bail conditions reduced, this time in the Sekgosese Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday. During his court appearance, Rambau launched several personal attacks on one of the State’s witnesses, Capt Dieter Meyer. Meyer, who had already testified against Rambau in his pending corruption case in Musina, is one of the people whose names appear on Rambau’s alleged hit list. The list, compiled in Rambau’s own handwriting, contains the names of nine state officials involved in Rambau’s corruption case. After this list was discovered and handed to the police, Rambau was arrested in January and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. It is alleged that Rambau had paid two witch doctors R850 and R3 500 respectively, to have the people on the list killed. During his court appearance Rambau defended his application and said that he wished to study at the university in Thohoyandou, hence his desire to be able to leave Louis Trichardt. His present bail conditions prohibit him from leaving town. He also said that he wanted to be able to visit his house in Maxambo Village. Another reduction he asked for was to report to the police only once a day, and preferably not too early in the morning. According

to him, it is too dark in the morning and he is afraid that he will be killed by Meyer. The State challenged Rambau’s claims and said that Rambau’s sudden notion to study was quite bizarre because, only two weeks ago, he had no money to pay his lawyers and had to apply for a state attorney. Meyer expressed the opinion that if the court were to reduce Rambau’s bail conditions, this would have a severe impact on further investigations. It was at this stage that Rambau asked Meyer whether he had ever threatened any of the people on the list since he was released on bail. Meyer testified that even though nothing could be linked directly to Rambau, there had been certain incidents reported at the homes of four of the people on the list, including himself. According to Meyer, there is proof that Rambau had visited Louis Trichardt’s state prison at least twice, both times under an alias. He further testified that since Rambau’s prison visits started, three suspect vehicles had been spotted outside the homes of regional prosecutor Hilke Janse van Rensburg, senior prosecutor Reino Mostert and regional magistrate Chris Mtombeni. The very same vehicles were also spotted at Meyer’s Pretoria residence. He also said that Janse van Rensburg’s dog had been poisoned two weeks ago. In his defence, Rambau said that he had many friends that he visited in prison. He later claimed that his sister supplied vegetables to the prison and that he had helped her to carry these into the prison. Rambau’s reduction of bail application was postponed for judgement. R3m spent on party Beaunice Machitela Mopani District Municipality celebrated its tenth year of service last week, by hosting a series of events to commemorate the milestone. The first occasion was a church service at Giyani stadium, which was followed by a gala dinner at Karibu lodge. The main event took place at the Nkowankowa stadium. The event drew crowds and some were transported by courtesy buses from as far out as Giyani. The crowd received a sponsored lunch and free ANC T-shirts, ahead of the local municipal elections on 18 May. The event showcased big names in the SA entertainment pool such as DJ Cleo, L’Vovo, Chomee, Selaelo Selota and Thomas Chauke. This elaborate celebration allegedly cost the MDM a shocking R3 million. The MDM said in a press statement “the celebrations follow after the council resolved that the district must bring people together to celebrate service delivery and the existence of the municipality”. Ms Mashadi Mathosa, the MDM’s head of communication, was on sick leave and therefore unavailable for comment regarding the cost of the function.

Dit is verkiesingtyd en ons kan ons maar staal vir politieke partye se gebruiklike verkiesingtydmanewales. Strukture wat onwettig opgerig is, sal afgebreek en teen die eienaars opgetree word, maar — en dit is ‘n groot voorwaarde — eers na die verkiesing. Mense kan nie nou ontstel word met lawwighede soos wetsgehoorsaamheid nie. Die binnegevegte is hard aan die gang, want politici, ongeag hul amateurstatus, vry na poste waar die beste betaal word of die meeste invloed geld. Diegene wat nie benoem is nie of wat te laag op die kandidatelyste is, soek vergelding. (Daar is sommige wat rede tot ontevredenheid het) Die hartseer is dat niks regtig noemenswaardig gaan verander nie. Niks gaan werklik verbeter nie. Want vir politici gaan dit om baie woorde en min dade. Dit is hul onbetwiste handelsmerk. En dit gaan vir hulle om eiebelang. Slegs mense met ‘n ego wat groter as die postuur is, vorder werklik in die politiek. Vir nederigheid is daar in die politieke spel nie ruimte nie. Waar daar wel ruimte is, is in politici se beursies en bankrekenings, of dan hul familielede en vriende s’n. Ja, ons stereotipeer en dit mag nie. Maar dit is deesdae moeilik om dit te vermy.

Tongknopers Malkoeisiekte is iets wat nie bestaan nie. Die siekte is malbeessiekte. Dit is sponsagtige bees-enkefalopatie (Engels: bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE). Die variasie by die mens staan as Creutzfeld Jakob-siekte (CJS) bekend. Ongelooflik en verstommend. Ongelooflik is ‘n sterk kommentaar-woord wat soos ander sterk byvoeglike naamwoorde en bywoorde spaarsaam gebruik moet word. Vermy dit (byvoorbeeld ongelooflik mooi/sterk/slim), behalwe wanneer jy ‘n spreker aanhaal. Gebruik liewer verbasend of verstommend, wat minder sterk is. Ongenaakbaar. ‘n Mens wat ongenaakbaar is (Engels: unapproachable), is stug/ontegemoetkomend en hou ander op ‘n afstand. Dié woord word ook verkeerdelik gebruik vir onverbiddelik, meedoënloos, onbeleef, ontoeskietlik of onversetlik. ‘n Landstreek is onherbergsaam, en ‘n beleid is ontoegeeflik of ontoeskietlik. Straler en straalvliegtuig is sinonieme. Jet setters is mense wat rondjakker op stralers; is stralerjakkeraars (nie: stralerjakkers nie!) of straalritsers of die stralerkliek. Hoe werk gebed (nie) Ek lees in William Barclay se outobiografie die volgende oor gebed: “Omdat ek in God, en in die liefde van God glo, glo ek in gebed. In Getsemane het Jesus ontdek dat daar geen vermyding van die kruis kon wees nie... Gebed stel ons nie in staat om `n weg rondom die moeilike saak te vind nie, maar om reg deur die moeilike saak te gaan, nie om dit te vermy nie, maar dit te aanvaar en te hanteer. Gebed is nie vermyding nie, maar oorwinning... Vierdens glo ek dat gebed beteken om in die teenwoordigheid van God te wees... Daarom glo ek ook daaraan om vir mense by God in te tree in gebed. Ek verstaan nie hoe dit werk om by God vir mense in te tree in gebed nie. Ek weet dat God baie beter as ek weet wat my geliefdes nodig het... Maar ek weet ook wat dit vir my in moeilike tye beteken het toe mense vir my by God ingetree het. Ek weet nie hoe gebed werk nie, maar ek weet ook nie hoe elektrisiteit werk nie. Tzaneen kyk eerder na krieket as IDP-sake

Tzaneeners kan solank voorberei op ‘n styging van 20,38% in die kragtariewe wat aan die begin van die nuwe finansiële jaar sal inskop, terwyl die res van die dienstetariewe met 6% sal styg. Dat die dorp se inwoners nie juis oor die tariefstrukture van die GTM gepla is nie, was die afgelope week duidelik. ‘n Goed geadverteerde Geïntegreerde Ontwikkelings-planvergadering (IDP) is in die saal van die Laerskool Tzaneen gehou, maar benewens die drie DA-raadslede, twee amptenare en die media het net elf mense opgedaag om daaraan deel te neem. Mnr Graham McComb van die DA het gesê vanjaar se konsep-begroting beloop R750m, wat sal bestaan uit diens- en belastingtariewe (R408m), staatstoekennings en subsidies (R283m) en ander inkomstes (R59m).

Die plaas Montrose langs die Letabarivier by Letsitele het Woensdag ‘n saailing in die grond gedruk, wat in die komende jare ‘n yslike boom kan word. Sapekoe kry weer lewe

Plasies vier hul 75 goue jare

Die Hoërskool Merensky vier vanjaar hul 75ste verjaardag en het dié groot geleentheid saam met wyle dr Hans Merensky se verjaarsdag herdenk. Die Plasie-dirigente het weer gewys hoekom hulle as die beste dirigente tydens die interhoër aangewys is, deur die hele skool met hul optrede te vermaak. Tydens die Merenskyfeesviering het die leerlinge ook aan ‘n partytjie-parade (BO) deelgeneem, om die program te open. Die gasspreker was me Martie Tremper, wat self ‘n leerling aan die skool was, voordat sy weer as jong onderwyseres teruggekom het en waar sy steeds onderrig gee. Die Plasies het die fees afgesluit deur koek en koeldrank te geniet, wat deur CocaCola geborg is. LINKS: Mnr Magnus Steyn, die skoolhoof, ondersteun deur die kultuur-verteenwoordigers in die uitvoerende komitee, het die kersies op die spesiale verjaarsdagkoek doodgeblaas.

Denè Verster was die wenner (oor ‘Spore’), met Franco Matthee tweede en Vunene Khosa en Nene Ngobeni saam derde. Die beoordelaars, me Corrie Koch, mnr Ockert le Roux en me Fransie le Roux, is hier saam met Franco, Nene, Denè en Vunene.

‘n Groep van 24 leerlinge van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster se 2010-matriekklas het ná die uitslae in Januarie bekend gemaak is, besluit om van hul antwoordstelle te laat hermerk, omdat hulle gevoel het hul punte stem nie met die jaar se prestasies ooreen nie. Elke vraestel wat gehermerk is se punt is verhoog. Agtien nuwe vakonderskeidings is behaal in Engels (12), Afrikaans (4), gasvryheidstudies (1) en lewenswetenskap (1). Die veranderde uitslae het meegebring dat Leon de Beer (hoofseun in 2010) nege onderskeidings behaal het en Danélle de Nysschen (verlede jaar se hoofmeisie) agt.

Die akademiese- en krieketuitblinkers van 2010, asook 2011 se atletiek- en swemsterre is vir hul harde werk en deursettingsvermoë beloon. Die beker vir die beste akademiese prestasie in gr 11 is aan Chantel Schoeman toegeken, terwyl gr 10 se beste akademiese prestasie deur Jasmin Jacob behaal is. Gr 9 se toekenning het aan Alicia du Toit gegaan en gr 8 se toekenning aan Marno van der Meulen. Die beker vir die beste prestasie in inligtingstegnologie is aan Wisani Shilumani toegeken, en boekpryse vir die hoogste prestasie in Afrikaans Huistaal is aan Sunè Raspel (gr 8), Alicia du Toit (gr 9), Joanè J van Rensburg (gr 10) en Wilrien Annandale (gr 11) toegeken. ‘n Beker en kontantprys van R1 000 vir die beste prestasie in wiskunde en fisiese wetenskap is aan Motshewa Makwela toegeken. Voor is Charlize Meyer, Lihani Vorster en Lumé Vorster en in die middel is Lize Mostert, Zani Vorster en Milané Smit. Agter is De Wet Vorster, Joseph Raspel, Eduan Smit en Bernard Vermaak. LEFT: Three pupils from Merensky High School, Jasmine Jacob, Lize Elliott and Moira Mhlari, had the opportunity to be part of the Commonwealth Day celebrations. The Queen chose the topic of Women as agents of change and this topic was debated world-wide by young representatives chosen from local schools. The three Plasie-participants had the opportunity to be part of a formal parliamentary session and Jasmine had the opportunity to deliver a very well-researched speech on the topic. The three team members did the research and Lize was responsible for creating and managing the slide show during the speech. The Merensky team was victorious out of 31 schools and was rewarded with a trophy and a computer. In the photo are Moira and Jasmine. Unfortunately Lize was absent when the photo was taken.

Unicorns swim the Ebenezer Mile Swimmers of Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen also took part in the Ebenezer Mile on Sunday. At the back are Ms Nicky Vickery (winner: category for ladies older than 30 years), Omer Zuker (ninth), Joshua Varrie (first), Graeme Harty (first) and Anke Vaughn (ninth). Leandri behaal vierde plek by SA’s Leandri Janse van Rensburg van Le’ Club in Tzaneen het die naweek in Port Elizabeth aan die SA Driekampkampioenskappe deelgeneem. Leandri het Gauteng Noord op die SA kampioenskappe in die junior afdeling (o.17 ouderdomsgroep) verteenwoordig. Driekamp bestaan uit 750 m swem, 20 km fietsry en 5 km hardloop. Leandri het vierde in haar ouderdomsgroep in ’n tyd van 1:17:00 geëindig. Dis ’n groot eer om op hierdie vlak te kan deelneem, aangesien dit haar eerste jaar as driekampatleet is.

Every year Stanford Lake College holds a Regatta Day. The pupils went out on Stanford Lake in rafts over the weekend to compete and play various games including ball games. A bowler has to be mentally alert. Every bowl is different as is every green. Most top bowlers take up the sport in their 30’s and even 40’s, but the Baragwanath fitness stood them in good stead despite them starting to play at a much later age. Many bowlers are ex tennis players. Tennis has always been a problem in the area as the only tennis court, now in disuse, is at the Magoebaskloof Hotel. Both have already won medals. Robin won the Limpopo singles and Trish the Limpopo masters. The couple started their bowling career at the Magoebaskloof Bowling Green. However, due to the small number of players they have all moved to the Tzaneen Bowling Green. The Haenertsburg area needs more bowlers. Locals are invited to consider joining and have to bear in mind that there is a selection process.
